Dr. Soybel is so funny and she has so much knowledge about her subject. Soybel makes learning history exciting and she has a unique teaching style!
great professor of History
She goes off on tangents, so bring a pillow. If she's late she won't come to class.
She is a well rounded teacher. She knows her subject very well and is willing to share her knowledge with her students. She keeps the class interesting and I have learned alot from her and was extremly happy with the class
Lots of students dropped this class but they didnt know what they were missing. She is the most interesting history teacher and gives great studying layout notes. I love her!
soybel is great, i love when she brings up her college stories of marquette and her drinking days. don't forget, she is from boston
Her lectures are interesting, just be sure to take good notes. -'cause her tests can be hard, even with the study guides she gives out beforehand.
I love doc. I took two classes; Western Civ. and Women's History. I looked forward to every class because she always took time to answer our questions completely. She doesn't have an easy class but very interesting. I'll keep those notes!
Doc Soybel is awesome! One of my friends told me about her so I took the 121 class and I absolutely loved her! I took her for 122 and again way awesome! I recommended her to one of my friends and know she loves her too! But you have to earn your grades.
She keeps you in the dark about grades a lot, and seems very disorganized. She loses papers and such. Make sure you stay on top of what you are sending in, and what is or isn't coming out graded.
Soybel....hmmm, what a chatter box about her personal life and wastes much class time in doing so. Very disorganized and hard to track down outside of class. Awful instructor, better ones out there!
Soybel is AWESOME! I took both of her World History classes. She had us watch The History of the World Pt. I in class. Best history teacher I've ever had. I recommend her to everyone.
She was the best professor I have had since coming to CLC. I hope that everyone has the chance to have her as a teacher
Doc is GREAT! After taking 121, I took 122 just for fun! She is knowledgable in so many areas & loves to teach. I learned so much from her class, and not just about history, though it does take some effort to follow some of her tangents. You will have to work for an A, but she is a very fair grader.
Love Doc to death. She does go off on tangents from time to time, but when it comes to content and material, she's great. You do have to earn your grades, but she does everything she can to help you do so.
I LOVE this professor! She was funny, interesting, and made the class worth going to. She likes to give pop quizes but they are not hard as long as you keep up on the required reading material. I will take more classes with her for sure. She's great!
She knows what she's talking about. The class was very informative and eye opening. unfortunately she doesnt teach this class every semester. She seemed sorta cliquey with some students. Grading was fair.
she was cool, and very helpful, but you have to ask if you dont understand something. for her internet course i think she was organized enough and usually emailed grades promptly.
Not a very good teacher. Got off topic way too much. Wasn't very clear in how she wanted papers written. She actually told the class wrong information on the battle at thermopolye (sp?). Classmate actually got sick of her talking about things not dealing with the subject and said something. She tried connecting the two. didn't work very well.
Very well structured and informative. The lecture format was appealing as well as help me to improve in critical thinking skills as well as writing ability.
She is not an easy teacher by any means, but I learned a lot in HST 122. I took the ONLINE class. We had essays for exams, so if you aren't a decent writer this class isn't for you. I got an A, but like I said, it wasn't easy. I would take her class again, though. I recommend her.
Fantastic teacher. Be prepared to write a few papers and look out for the occasional pop quiz. She's nice and very funny. She makes history interesting and ties it to how life is today. She really cares about her students and was very helpful.
I have taken three classes with Soybel and each one got better. She is an amzing teacher with amazing knowledge. Her classes are fair, you get exactly what you put in. The best part is I have never had a teacher is more willing to help then her being that her office door is always open.
Take this professor. Soybel is great. Highly intelligent, entertaining, and definitely not unattractive. Took HST122 for an intercession course -- was way easy. 3 easy tests, 3 1 page papers, and 3 weeks of funny lectures.
If you're thinking this will be an easy online class to meet your liberal arts requirement, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. She seems like a nice person, but she doesn't return emails quickly, doesn't spell check her messages before she posts which is ridiculous since she expects us to proofread our work!BTW, I got an A- on my first paper. But,too much work
She's attractive and interesting! (I have no idea what else you could ask for in a history course.) She teaches and expects work out of you like a sophomore or junior in college--that's a good thing. Her classes are never wasted or blow-offs. I changed to a history major because she was so impressive. She, honest to God, knows her stuff. Hot. Wow.
Awesome prof. made me change my major. always willing to help, and funny too! Just be prepared to take a ton of notes and you'll be fine. an enjoyable class.
I don't know why any student would say this class is hard. (Maybe on-line it is.) Dr. Soybel is very nice, understanding, and very knowledgable. She is a fair grader. Do not be afraid to take her because there are only 2 tests and two papers for your grade. She does take off for attendance but I still got an A in the class.
Interesting class and great teacher! I hate history but she made it interesting. The homework is easy and you only have two essays that you will get an A on if you do all she asks. Exams are easy but you have to really study. She gives a very helpful study guide however.
great teacher. Interesting, understandable, fair, comical. A lot of note taking, but that is left to the students. Lots of powerpoints and lecture, but in a fun sensible manner. Take notes and go to class and it will definately be beneficial.
Really great teacher. You can tell she really cares for the subject and likes teaching it. very helpful and funny. lectures are so full of info. you basically write like a maniac for an hour straight, but after there is no need for the book. she covers everything in a way that makes sense so even people who hate history can grasp and understanding
Great teacher!!! She expects you to read all of the assignments.. i honestly never did. We had 2 take home exams which consisted of 4 essay questions of your choice 2 pages each! only then is the book helpful! Very interesting class and she teaches really well! i recommend her =)
I loved Dr Soybel! I was very intimidated at first because everyone else in the class seemed really knowledgable already, but she made me feel very comfortable and even gave me individual encouragement throughout the semester. Take her if you can! She's great!
Awesome class, but you are graded on 2 papers and 2 exams, so if you do poorly on one of them expect to get less then an A in the class with no way to make it up. Great personality, engaging conversation. Does not do much class discussion which is disappointing. Fun class, enjoyable teacher, fairly easy A.
Great instructor who actually wants her students to do well. Doesn't put on airs for being a doctor. Gives engrossing lectures that are both informative and enjoyable. Totally manageable workload. Great option for this class.
Dr. Soybel maybe alright to take in class, but she is a terrible online teacher. I don't know if she doesn't know how to teach an online class, or if she just didn't care. She NEVER responded to emails quickly,(taking days to weeks to respond) and she does not grade quickly. Our midterm took her a month to grade. Bottom line, DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE
Took the class online and turn out to be a very good class. Dr. Soybel was willing to help and straight forward on what she expected. Though at times she would be late on getting back on grades; though she did give feedback on grades and personal issues did come up during the class which is understandable.
GREAT Teacher!Took her 121&122 course. she is very helpful if you go look for the help. Hate Homework so she is the best teacher to take, graded on 2 papers a few quizzes that were online and the Mid-term and final. Have basically a month for the papers so should not be a problem. class is all PowerPoint's and vid. Best class i ever took at CLC.
Dr. Soybel is an excellent lecturer and teacher - she actually made learning history kind of fun for me - it was a subject I wasn't very interested in to begin with. She is exceptionally versed in her subject matter:Western Civ to 1500. You'll read, you'll write - her grading is fair.
Nice professor. Grading is fair. No homework other than reading and two online quizes (make sure you do well on them). Two papers to write a midterm and a final. No excuse not to get good grades on anything as you are given the questions to the midterm and final and have a week to study. Only negative thing is grades are posted a bit late.
She knows her stuff but she's very self obsessed. Loves talking about herself and relating most topics in class to how they affected her. Kind of hard to explain, but any input you give her she will end up talking about herself. Also, there is little to no continuity and every class picks up at a different place, you never know where you'll end up.
Helpful, clear, and entertaining. She makes history fun to learn about, though inevitably some parts are dry no matter what. Goes off on tangents sometimes. No homework/small grades. Your grade is all based on several projects/papers. They were all challenging but definitely manageable. Textbook is never used, so don't buy it. I'd recommend her.
Dr. Soybel may be a good professor in person, but I warn you, DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE. I am very experienced with online courses, and she is by far the worst online teacher I've ever had. Extremely unorganized. Does not post things in the right place, and then expects you to find the post. If you need to take HST online, find a different teacher!
She is a very tuff grader when it comes to essays. Only 1 person got an A out of 17 kids. She gave out a notecard for a midterm which was helpful. But she expects all the answers to be just like the ones she think are right not by the book. She tries to be funny but fails miserably. Your choice many kids are not happy with her grading.
She is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject, and will help and answer questions. That being said, she does a lot of straight lecture with little visual aid or class discussion, so if you are not interested in history, you will likely find the class boring. Very tough grading papers and tests, need to work and know the material.
I was pleasantly surprised that I actually liked a history class, but Dr. Soybel is very nice and makes it interesting. She is a very tough grader though and I really had to work for my A. Essays are especially tough. If you attend all the lectures and read the textbook you will do fine though.
She could talk for hours about history, ask her one simple question and it will turn into a 5 minute answer.Woman knows what she's talking about! But be prepared to take notes like a maniac. Grade is made up of midterm,final,2 papers, and a few quizzes. Sometimes gets off track, but still gives great info. Take her, she brings treats on exam days :)
Apparently she is good in-class. Online, however, she was very disorganized, there was waaaaay too much work for the class load, many of her links were dead links, she had a hard time following her own weekly schedule she typed up that week, took a long time to grade (paused for 3-4 weeks). DO NOT take this prof online if you can.
I just enrolled in this class, and let me just say it is the worst class by far.. this isn't my first online class. VERY UNORGANIZED, MISLEADING INFORMATION, AND VERY UNLCEAR. If i hadn't purchased everything required for the class already, I would have dropped it. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS ONLINE FOR ANYONE!
I used to love history. I am very sorry I didn't get to read the reviews..., very unorganized, very unclear, the assignments are in different folder every week. the papers are more literary projects than social studies.
Absolutely the worst teacher I have taken at CLC!!!!!! Please don't take her! Find someone else fast!!! Her papers are unnecessarily long, her lectures are extremely boring, and worst of all she tells the worst jokes (but thinks she is funny). Grades off three tests (extremely detailed and unorganized) and two papers... Run in the other direction.
I enrolled in Dr Soybel's Western Civ 122 because the time slot matched my sched. Her ability to connect history to the modern world ignited my interest, and I've now had her for 3 classes. She makes you work for it, but she is always ready to answer questions. She's a very fair grader. She is an amazing educator and cares for her students.
I am so so so sorry I ever took her class. She is so disorganized and constantly posts contradicting information. If you email her for help you wont get a response for days, when you do she will inform you that she is taking points off for asking for help and if she doesn't take off points she will give you snarky responses. I want out of her class
She does not know how to run an online class, she can't set up the assignments so you can turn them in! It took her a month and a week to grade midterms. She took two vacations in the middle of the semester (one during midterms). I'm 90% sure she left the only good reviews about herself. AWFUL.
Unobtainable requirements for her online summer class. There's a lot of reading, the syllabus says 2-4 hours of work a week, but the reading alone will take longer.
Does not give enough time to complete test online. You have to search for the questions worth the most (which takes a while) if not you'll fail the test. Must pay $75 to do work .does not use blackboard for test. Needs to add more mins to test or makes it limitless. -+Like evey online class+. Barely passed the class last sem. Choose another prof.
Be aware that her grading is tought , its easier online but still hard. The way she grades is not normal for an online class I received C last semester and it was the hardest C I ever had to work for. Gen ed history SHOULD not be that difficult. Choose another instructor. Im sure half of her students either fail or passed with a C avg.
Would give her all 0's if i could. Never responds on time. Makes mistakes. Worst online teacher by far.
DONT DO IT!!!!!! Took this class online as I have a full time job. At the beginning of the semester she stated that each weekly assignment would be sent out in an email on Monday's, these assignments would not be sent until at least Wednesdays and were due Fridays giving you two days to do the work. Very unorganized and does not respond to emails.
1st word that comes to mind is disorganized. Luckily, unlike many profs, not much of your grade is hurt by this, since the only reason to do the reading's to have something to say in class, exams are nonexistent, and papers come along very rarely. It's hard to not get a good grade, but it's not very interesting, since lectures are very meandering.
She is completely unorganized, she posts assignments out later then announced, as well as contradicting her own posts. She changed dates out of nowhere, which contradicted the syllabus, which then led to missing assignments, since she doesn't accept late work. I took her class in person and it was nice but she's a TERRIBLE online professor.
I took this class on line and it was HORRIBLE! The teacher originally put out a course syllabus that looked manageable with my busy schedule. Within two weeks, she completely changed the entire class expectations according to her wants and needs. It was too late to drop the class and get money back, so I was stuck!
Honestly the only reason this class was so impossible was the fact that this professor is so unorganized. The syllabus does NOT match up with what you are really doing. When you are notified about an assignment, you do not have much time to complete it and many times you are not even notified so you have to search through the blackboard site.
Very lecture heavy. Difficult to follow along because lectures feel really unorganized. It is unclear what to prepare for for the test. No study guides given. Essay topics are dry and unthrilling. Takes at least 2 weeks to grade each test/essay.
Terribly boring lectures. Only a small handful of graded assignments and tests throughout the whole semester. Made class quite monotonous.
Soybel has a wonderful personality. She makes jokes quite a bit, is extremely lecture heavy (I write down some notes, but the textbook readings are the same as the lecture she's giving), and she is a helpful professor that will always help answer your questions. I'm taking another class she teaches right now, so I highly recommend her.
This was my second time taking Professor Soybel's class, and I've got to say that she was amazing both times. Yes, there are many lectures and you're graded by only a few things, but it's pretty simple as long as you go to class. I would take her class again if possible.
I took her online History 121 class. She is very disorganized. There were 4 weeks in a row when she was posting an announcement about the wrong week/readings, she was late on posting quizzes, tests, and assignments multiple times. In her announcements she would say " read article ..." and the same title was not in her folders.
Great teacher! She is funny and showed a lot of Monty Python. Not a lot of graded assignment which does make this class hard. But she is a solid choice for a history class.
Took history online and it was a mess. Frequent typos and not always informing students of what was due when meant that assignments went ungraded for weeks so I never knew my actual grade. The quizzes didn't correlate to the reading, or if they did, she wasn't clear on what we were meant to read.
I personally was not a fan... The class felt unorganized, multiple assignments were posted late. Class schedule DID NOT match up with syllabus. I wouldnt recommend this class to anyone but to be fair, I took this class online and for all I know, she could be a better professor in person.
This class was the most disorganized I've ever been a part of. She copies and reuses all her material and then misses changing the dates or even adding due dates. She would specify to do a reading that was not in the assigned weekly folders and her essay prompts were riddled with confusing verbiage. She did seem like a very friendly person though.
So disorganized, grades super hard even though during stressful times, lectures are all over the place and takes so long to grade.
This class was the worst class I have ever taken! I would not suggest taking her or this class. Very disorganized. Lectures SUPER HEAVY! Too much information. Everything is just all over the place... no study guides. Test questions not understandable. Tells you to do things but can never find it!! Got a D and am not happy about that...
One of the best teachers I've had. I took 2 history classes with her during the 2020 fall and 2021 spring and each one was a pleasure. If you love history or enjoy learning about this is a great class. Some of the writing may be tedious but you truly end up mastering the topic you write about so its not a bunch of wasted time. GREAT teacher.
The good news is that she is very knowledgeable and tries to make her lectures interesting with funny videos. The bad news is that she doesn't stick to her syllabus and some of her test questions are so obscure and irrelevant they are almost like trivia questions. There were problems with assignment instructions not being accurate. I did get an A.
The syllabus and assignments are very unorganized and confusing. Takes long to get back to you and you will mostly have to teach yourself the work. Overall shes messy and unorganized.
Absolutely no structure to lectures. Every class just feels like I am listening to an hour and a half rant. It is halfway through the semester already ,and there is only assignment in the grade book. Instructions are always unclear. She will say one thing and then say another the next class. I think she walks into class and just wings it everyday.
Dr. Soybel is one of many doctors who use their title as an excuse to be a harsh grader. Incorrect due dates for assignments, confusing modules, and cryptic test questions plague this class like the Black Death plagued Europe. A lot of people won't post their grade because they failed lol, but don't sign up for any of Dr Soybels condensed courses.
Dr. Soybel is seriously one of the best History professors I have taken at CLC. She is passionate about her subject. Those that are whining probably didnt actually do the reading nor study for the class. She is a fair grader and won't let you slack off. Some of you just want participation points and can't handle that you actually have to study.
In my experience, she is VERY lecture-heavy, but I still looked forward to class every day because she's actually quite funny. She is also very understanding and as long as you communicate, she is willing to give extensions and still give you full credit. She was a great teacher.
There is SO MUCH reading in this class! She does not grade things right away. I took her 8wk course and my things weren't graded until the very last week of the semester which makes it harder to keep your grade well. There is well over 10 pages of reading plus the assignments due every week.
Wouldn't recommend
Oh my gosh I absolutely do not recommend. Professor posts assignments in a disorganized manner, and her grading is not up to par. Assignment due dates are often mixed up and modules/announcements do not correlate with each other. As a student who has been in school for quite some time, this was by far my absolute worst experience.
Very unorganized content, slow grader, and readings are usually run-on sentence rants. It just felt unnecessarily stressful. Trying in this class will probably give you a passing grade, usually a B. Quizzes feel like gotcha questions. Difficult grader always gives C's on papers. She seems like a nice person but online... THIS CLASS FELT AWFUL!!!
