misguided, energy poorly focused
Basically a news of the day discussion class. Learned absolutely nothing.
Absolutely horrible professor.
The best teacher in cmn at the U of O
great prof
very energetic, marks are not very well distributed through the course...

He's so interesting. he makes things make sense
Was a great course...very up to date content
funny and interesting
best prof in com dept. VERY engaging, energetic. keen interest in his students.
Belanger is entertaining yet a hard marker. he takes off marks for grammar when he can't speak the English language well. He goes off topic frequently which sends a number of students into a deep sleep..
This professor is an inspiring teacher. You will come across very few of these in your university career. He is dynamic, animated and fun. He is challenging, but if you put in the work you will come out having learned a lot and feeling very satisfied.
Belanger is very helpful as he uses e-mail to remind his students what's happening on a constant basis. He keeps students up to date with current media events in a very non-academic way.
he is one of the few professors that cares enough to push his students to succeed ... if you aren't interested in learning, take a different class.
A for effort. Anyone this committed to helping people actually LEARN deserves a medal. He is challenging, humourous, engaging and FAIR. I would recommend his courses to anyone. Relevants topics, slides and info. Great prof!!
Great course, great communication between prof and students. It's worth it! i learned a lot and enjoyed his courses
Belanger’s teaching methodologies are as state-of-the art as the technology we discuss. Empowering students to THINK and generate personal opinions. Sure, the pop quizzes can have a nasty bite, but it really works out in the end.
2170 & 3165: Belanger is animated and gives useful up-to-date info, no BS. Alot of work but challenging, like a job. You learn while participating! Very satisfying in the end. Only complaint is that both classes are too similar.
He wants you to suceed and to have some fun with it. His class will offers you many great challenges for a leaning experience. He teachs in a very interractive way and you'll learn more than just the basic things. You will enjoy it if you work for it.

The absolute best prof you will ever have, if you don't mind working. He expects you to work hard and attend classes, but if you do, the pop quiz portion is a free 40%. If you get anything less than an A, it's because you're lazy.
He's a good prof. He screeches a bit, and too hyperactive and expects too much sometimes. I hate all the little assignments, remembering little details from the readings in the pop quizzes is too hard and unfair. The ej's are cool and easy, but he needs to relax. Take a valium and chill!
Awesome prof.. This class is really entertaining and great if you want to be challenged. Belanger loves to interact with the students and if you "play" you will be rewarded. A must for preparing you for the real world. The only thing that sucks is that all of the projects are group work, oh well.
No proper essay outline; not my type of course. He is too focussed with subjective 'gossip' and up-to-the-minute news and spends at least 40 minutes ranting about the 'latest' gadgets or the abhorrance he has for children-offenders. Kind of cutthroat course.
Good prof, very interactive but will sting you on your participation mark if you don't "play".
He is one of the most childish men I have ever met. Your grade is determined by how much he likes you. So make sure to kiss his A** constantly. He is often not teaching facts but rather his own opinion. He will not accept other points of view. If you see things his way, you are on his side. This guy is an idiotic joke who should have been fired.
I disagree with all the harsh criticism. Bélanger is high energy and really enthusiastic about what he teaches. Show me a prof who does not slant their courses in favour of what they know or believe. He does not have blinders on. I would argue the opposite - he still loves learning! You work for your mark, but he is not unreasonable.
I personally think he's great, i had three courses with him and he always captures my attention. He is funny, charismatic, energenic and loves interacting with the classe on all the latest news. Not afraid to express his opinion but will not deminish you for yours. I think under his intimidating facade, he's a softy. Despite his little quizzes, etc
Good teacher!
I loved this class, Belanger was honestly one of the best prof's I have ever had. The class was at 830a.m on thursdays, and as much as that sucks, he always made the day fun and exciting. A+++ best prof, wish there were more like him.
Amazing teacher. Probably one of the best out there..

Not an easy prof, but pay attention and you'll do well. He knows his stuff and is also very passionate about what he teaches.
Great teacher! I'd say.. one of the best!
Most memorable prof ever! He is hilarious, animated, and smart. He gets into the material insensely, but engages students. The course work is heavy and challenging, but if you go to class regularly and do the readings youll be fine. Do the work, the class is worth it! you feel satifsying in the end :P "OH BOY!" haha
Très dynamique et passioné. Excellent prof qui vulgarise et qui donne le goût d'apprendre et de continuer.
His lectures are engaging, and he somehow makes the study of radio and other media interesting. ALthough, it frustrated me when i couldn't go to a class and i e-mailed him to get a mark on an assignment that had been given back when i was away and he replied: "You have got to be kidding!" Made me a bit upset, i thought Profs wanted to help?!
Very engaging Prof. energetic as hell for 8:30 AM. Keeps you on your toes participating especially 8:30. Quizzes are tough and unfair sometimes. I missed on a couple even though I did my reading but forgot tiny, seemingly inconsequential words but could have described the entire concept. Group work, yikes. Financial advice is good. Interesting guy
really good prof...just pay attention more or less cause i know he caught a few people off guard in my class...he's straight-up but a great teacher

He is an amazing prof. He is engaging and exciting. Even though the class was at 8:30am he kept your attention. If you get the chance to take one of his classes take it!
was a good professor, but a hard marker in the essays we had to write.
Pierre is an amazing outgoing prof! I would tell anybody to take his class! He is very upbeat and full of energy. He has a way of teaching like no other prof. Course load for a 3rd yr course is alright and his quizzes are tough. In the end, I will revolve my whole schedule around when he teaches other classes just to be in his :)
Absolutely loved him and the class. Amazing prof!
Very interesting professor! Somewhat intimidating, but wakes you up at 8:30. Always there to help out and discuss news, course content, or hockey. Keeps students updated with e-mail links. I would take any course with his as professor.
Excellent teacher. Really helpful if you show interest in the class and hard work.
The class was fairly easy. I found him to be a bit abrasive and rude, but other people I knew thought he was funny. He has a tendency to go off topic, and can't seem to grasp the fact that students will be on their computers when he goes off on a useless tangent, or re-covers a topic, for an hour. I plan to avoid him in the future.
Tres bon prof, un de mes preferes! Actif, contenu up-to-date! Professeur avec expression.Prendrais d'autre cours avec si c'étais pas seulement l'été
He is very energetic but can be very rude and arrogant. I thought he was going to be a great prof and now I just think hes a jerk...like the way he talks to students like they are stupid and beneath him.
Amazing professor. Definitely the best one I have had. Expects a lot from students, but forces them to do their best. Prepares people for the real world by using real scenarios. Knows everything about the Media Industry world. Definitely recommended!!
By far the best prof I've ever hard. I took 3 classes with him. He is extremely knowledgeable, is very passionate and has a very typical French sense of humour. I really enjoyed his classes and it pushed me to work harder.
He's cleary passionate about what he teaches but he does pick favorites and he can be very rude. There is nothing funny about how rude he is.
Great prof, energetic and filled with industry based knowledge and experience. He may go off topic, but it is always interesting. Don't bring a laptop, just a pen and paper or actually stay off the internet or he will lose it on you. He sets clear expectations of students and is always there to support them.
I was excited to take a class with him... and I was very disappointed with the outcome.
Every email that was addressing student questions etc. was worded in a very rude tone. His exams were straight forward for the most part, but there were a lot of very specific details and dates and numbers etc. that you would have to thoroughly do the readings for. Don't simply copy answers from the notes for assignments, not scared to punish you.
Taken online. Lots of reading but overall easy course. if you do the modules you will pass with a good grade. Material was fun. Would defiantly take again. No textbook to buy!
Great online class, easy mark. Lots of reading but you have a week to do all the work so it's do able. Lots of little assignments rather then 1 or 2 big ones which makes it easy to get good marks. Exams are straight forward. Prof is very passionate about his work and knows a lot.
Um. No. Took his class in french online. Takes 10-15% off regardless of whether you have 1 spelling mistake or 10. So make sure you have perfect french. He talks down to his students, and his feedback is usually only about grammar. Believes he's like the king of communications. Tests have ridiculously stupid and non-pertinent questions.
Never got to meet him but from his videos he seemed nice. He replies e-mails on time. He's a really great prof. I would take a class with him again. No textbook needed, he did that to save us some money, great guy!
Lots of tests/ assignments. Course outline and material is simple. SO much weekly work though, it takes around 6- 12 hours just to get through the readings and then on top of that there is assignments.
Worst professor, and course I have ever had in my university career. Do not recommend taking the course at all.
Pierre puts care and attention into his lectures and can make the course very relevant and interesting. He provides detailed feedback which can be useful or condescending. Grading is fair, except when you don't include the word count. Without a word count included you will get a 0, or 50 if the paper was good quality.
Do not take this course if it isn't your passion. It takes a lot of dedication and constant checking up/participation throughout the online course. A lot of work and reading. He puts a lot of questions on the midterm/exam that are from extra readings so make sure you do ALL of them. Get ready to put in about 10 hours/week for this course.
Don't expect this to be an easy A because it's an online class. Tons of reading - unnecessarily heavy in my opinion. Lots of little assignments. Midterms and exam are long with questions such as dates, and things you would have passed over while reading the slides. Extremely condescending and impolite in class correspondence. Avoid.
Worst professor I have ever had. Unprofessional emails, calls you out in class for no reason, and doesn't teach content relevant to exams or quizzes. I do not recommend taking his courses, avoid at all costs.
take it for what it's worth because I only communicated with him through e-mail, but his tone was very condescending and rude towards his students. Lots of tiny assignments and lots of readings, it may be online but it'll take up a lot of time and effort. Don't expect it to be an easy elective. One good thing though is that there's no textbook
Dont take this course if you want an easy credit. He comes off pretty rude in his emails. Along with the modules, there are tons on articles to read which you will be tested on. Alot of the questions on exams are so specific to the millions of article you have to read. He is also very picky with assignment outlines, get it wrong and you will fail
Extremely tough online class. Do not take unless mandatory for your program. The modules are very wordy and there is a lot of mandatory reading that you will be tested on. The midterms also include questions on specific statistics shown only in graphs on the modules.
Not an "easy" online course. The material is simple, but there are many readings and the midterm and final ask very specific questions from the readings. The midterm and exam are 120+ MCQ and you only get 1.5 hours. It's an easy B/B+ but you will need to work hard to get A- or A. You will not get A+.
Professor can be insensitive with some of his remarks and come off as rude in emails. However, will always make content interesting and make sure that you'll get a good grade if you work hard and participate. Just a tip: try not to take his comments too personally and make the best of them if you feel they are pertinent.
Worst professor I have ever had in four years at this school. Extremely condescending and speaks to students like we are all stupid. This guy acts like he has the greatest mind on the planet. Responds to emails fast, but probably should take more time because he impulsively responds with an incredibly rude response.
He gives way too many readings (all lengthy) and makes it difficult for you to keep up. He also gives minimal time for midterms so youll barely finish.
Took this class as an online elective, avoid at all costs if this isn't your program of study. Gives way too many readings, and asks extremely specific questions on the exams about those "mandatory" readings. If you make good notes you can pass but it's hard to get a good mark in this class so don't take it as a GPA booster.
I sat in bed after his exam wondering if a degree was really worth it.
There's no textbook, he just posts a bunch of text on BrightSpace. When I finished copy-pasting everything into a word document, it was 360 pages long with the pictures taken out. Midterm + Exam online. The exam questions are ridiculously specific. You WILL need to know actual QUOTES said by prominent industry figures.
So much reading for absolutely no reason. Midterm and Final are both online but he hardly gives enough time to write. You don't get 3 hrs on final like EVERY OTHER CLASS AT THE UNIVERSITY. The worst class I've ever taken. Do not take if you don't have to!
Interesting class but the teacher doesn't help you at all, he isnt understanding of students and lacks of communication
Honestly the ABSURD amount of "mandatory reading" should be illegal. I had no time whatsoever to read it all. Take PRECISE & SHORT notes, if not, you're failing. 15 assignments total. Set aside 12-18 hrs MIN. per week for it. Prof is a bit arrogant & condescending when answering questions. Try not to cry. Tests are only 1:50 hrs, not 3 like others.
Would never take a class with this prof if my life depended on it. So arrogant and condescending in emails when you're asking for help. Readings are mortifyingly long. He also doesn't let you take the class at your own pace, he blocks the future modules so you can't start them even if you want to. Can't contest your grade since he's not on campus.
I HAVE NEVER QUESTIONED MY COURSE SELECTION MORE THAN I HAVE AFTER TAKING THIS CLASS. This man has no mercy, theres readings like no tomorrow like whyyyy. You make one mistake and ur down to a B so sucks if u are a flawed human being who makes mistakes. Any time you try to reason with him he always tells u theres always next time so I would drop it
Dont even bother. It looks fun at first and then slowly ur laughter turns into tears. Dont do it just dont...
I feel like this man needs a reality check... no ur class is not easy and neither is ur marking so dont expect me to not make any mistakes jeez
It's the course. Intro to Media is very intense. You really need to know how to pay attention and not lose interest. The prof is a nice guy, he posts many videos that are nice to watch and listen to. He makes his lectures a little detailed but also makes sure he's on point about his material. Tests are fairly easy. Make sure you know your stuff
Best course I have ever taken. Ever. Originally had Dina Sahla, she was awful. Belanger knows what he's talking about, makes you work for your mark and if you care about why you're in the program you will love what he gives you to read. Everything is current, he truly cares about what he wants you to take out of the course.
honestly don't know why this prof has so many bad ratings lol. there's def a lot of readings but tbh I didn't do them all and still easily got a B. you have to skim the readings and pay attention to the ones that seem most important. the assignments were easy and he gives good feedback to improve on the next one.
90+ questions on midterm 135 mins 100+ questions on final 150 mins colour < color (marks this wrong) Inconsiderate in emails First year course so be ready This prof is not bad because he forces you to prepare for the worst in university... So it'll get easy after this course
AVOID AT ALL COSTS if you value your gpa
Didn't interact with him much as the class was online and asynchronous, however, the modules were clear and interesting. The content was diverse with articles, definitions, and videos. Exams were super long but weren't too difficult. Had a quiz for each module which helped to get free marks. Overall, pretty solid prof.
The midterm and final exam was tough and super long. This course material very heavy, it contains lots of reading. Exams contain many details and very specific. After each module, there is a quiz, quiz questions are similar to both exams, but still tough to prepare and review exams.
This class is amazing! If you do the work, honestly you'll be fine. Exams are easy if you just DO THE WORK. Don't expect to give him poor work and receive an A+, he cares about the course and will grade you fairly. Marks fast and well, and gives amazing feedback IF HE SEES THAT YOU CARE ABOUT THE COURSE. Took this course with online Chem, not hard
Chances to get an A+ in this class are little to none unless you can memorize 100,000 words of the readings. No respect for students whatsoever and asks VERY specific questions on the exams. Probably retaking this course just to get a better experience.
Yes there is a lot of reading but as long as you go through the modules properly you should be able to do well. The quizzes and assignments offer the opportunity for easy marks if you are not as good of a test taker. Specific exam questions, but they are to see if you actually went through the modules. Command F is your friend in this course.
He is a very tough marker. If you don't have to take this class, you must not take this class with this professor. But if you have to take this class... remember that you can get some marks from every single quiz.
Prepare to read a lot. The class could be fun if you have passion for the topic
1- I don't recommend take this class for fun. For me, it was obligatory and I still was overwhelmed. 2- Don't email him personally. He is very rude and unprofessional but his TAs are incredibly sweet and reply very fast. 3- A lot of memorizing so take notes, study and try to actually understand the concepts discussed.
Sooo much to read, and quizzes are all most all of the specific things in mandatory reading.
Sooo much to read, and quizzes are all most all of the specific things in mandatory reading, take care
Worst Prof Ever. How can someone be so lazy? This guy has no lectures. He just blasts you with long modules filled with articles and soooo many stats. I cant believe we pay tuition to read publicly available articles. What a joke!
Run fast.
The worst teacher I've ever had and hope won't have a worst teacher than that because his course is boring and makes me angry. Online classes are hard and he makes it harder: never show up, makes you read articles and stuff you could find by yourself on Internet. His exams are not legit: he will evaluate you on things that doesn't really matter.
Took this class as an elective because it seemed interesting,Big mistake. If you like sitting in front of a computer for 15 hours a week and reading alone with no guidance at all this is the class for you. If you are a student with accommodations good luck that's all I need to say. Make sure to take extra good notes and remember exact dates.
This elective ended up being the course I spent most of my time on this semester. Though interesting topic, content seems to be added cumulatively, such that a student in 2020 has considerably more work than a student in 2017. Expect your exam reviews to reach 100+ pages (mine did). Prof needs to be urged to show some compassion and calibrate work
1. A LOT OF READING MATERIALS. Cannot even read the whole cause it's too much, however, the materials are useful. 2. provide good instruction to assignments and good feedback from TAs. 3. Exams are kind of hard.
Professor Belanger's CMN1160 is very content heavy. I spent upwards of 15 hours a week on the modules and the only way to contact him was through email. He is a tough grader, but his expectations are rather clear. Some content in the modules seemed like it had been google translated from French to English, so it was difficult to comprehend.
The worst class Ive taken so far, although it may have been more enjoyable if I had a different prof. The amount of reading you have to do for this class is beyond ridiculous. Cant believe Im paying money to teach myself content from free sources online. Please avoid this class with Pierre at all costs.
I am only a month into this course and hate it already. This course is a lot for first year students trying to find their way in university all alone in a PANDEMIC. He is inconsiderate, unaccommodating and a very hard marker. All you do is read huge amounts of text and articles from the internet. If this course is not mandatory DON'T TAKE IT!!!!!!
A few weeks in and this class is already the hardest thing ever. If you have issues with sticking to a schedule and working for a long period of time, for god's sake don't take this class. There is so much to do for FIRST YEAR STUDENTS. The prof doesn't take this MAJOR fact into consideration. There are no interaction whatsoever. It's just so hard
Guys don't do it please take the safe route and find another course, take all these other reviews as a hint and save your gpa.
Hey guys, just finished the mid-term of this class, which was challenging and a second language unfriendly exam, so that is the only reason I dropped the class. You might notice that the prof says so many ppl cheated in the short answer section, but what is the point of copying if there were 7 150 words "short answer" questions and 71M/C in 2 hr!
Easy grader, no live classes. His material is repetitive and gets old after a while though, which made the class really boring. If your a fan of totally offline courses, and don't mind 5-8h of reading, I'd say go for it. If you want a more stimulating class, opt out.
This class is too packed.. the prof doesnt even teach, he drops a load of texts and articles every week and we have to do the work without any explanation... hes never given a single lecture. The exams are also hard, instead of asking theory questions, he asks us to remember the revenue of random companies... I didnt learn much
Take all of the other ratings as a very very accurate depiction of what this man is like. If you don't have to take this course DONT TAKE IT. I wouldn't let me select 0 on the scale to rate him but just know if I could, I would have 0
Great course, very organized.
If you care about your mental health at all DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You will spend 7+ hours every week reading random CTV articles, only for exam questions to ask what a certain woman held in her left hand in some random promo video hidden within the hundreds of pages of notes. I learned NOTHING. Lazy prof, triple the normal amount of material.
makes simple things hard for no reason. sure the course is organized but he's a terrible professor!!!
Terrible. Just terrible. While the online course was well structured and easy to work through, his tests were incredibly specific but only about very obscure, irrelevant information. What he is looking for requires total memorization of an unnecessarily broad scope of information. I would not recommend him at all.
I've never struggled harder in a midterm. 72 M/C questions, then 7 "short" answers (150 words). I had over 20 pages of notes going into this exam and still am not sure if I even passed. You might think we're exaggerating, but one of the questions was about something on the screen of someone's phone in an optional video. Don't do this to yourself.
really wanted to give a 0 but that wasn't an option. All he does is post lecture slides with loads of readings in them. He doesn't hold zoom sessions or explian any course material. The midterm questions are incredbily specific and does not measure your knowledge at all. It measures how much random things you can remember. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE
Hands down the one that I'd Never take again; literally the reason why I switched out of communications. He has weekly quizzes which aren't bad but his midterms (+ prob exams) are BAD 79 MCQ about random details from videos that we watched MONTHS ago like "what was the building they filmed this in"+ 9 150-word q's. v unhelpful too; doesn't teach.
TERRIBLE. I have never had a prof like this before. Every week he posts about 25 modules, a single module takes about an hour to read/take notes. They are ridiculously long and borderline impossible to complete within a reasonable time. No lectures or zoom sessions, its 100% you teaching yourself. What a joke, awful professor who just doesnt care
Finished his course will never take him again... I'd even consider skipping a semester so I don't have to have him. VERY trivial on final and midterm exam questions. It was along the lines of "What shirt was the guy wearing in the video". You are not allowed to go back to previously answered questions on his exams. HEAVY on readings.
Terribly trivial questions on finals and midterms regarding videos watched months ago. EXTENSIVE amount of reading... I've finished my college degree before going here, im not a stranger to reading but good god its a lot. his marking is ridicules. He expects you to have extremally detailed notes on characteristics of individuals in these videos.
My notes taken for this class is as thick as other 4 combined, go figure. Which turned out to be uselesss because he asks nothing but trivial questions just so he could teach us a lesson about the cruity of life, while he was travelling around the world. Course name is"Intro media studies", content is: Phd of comms in 3 months.
Very organized asynchronous class. Grades assignments very quickly but the feedback isn't always clear. Like other reviews say, the exams are pretty specific, but they're open book so it's manageable. Just stay on top of the course and if possible have your notes on a computer so you can search through them more easily during the exams.
This prof does not like 1st year students. You won't ever speak to him, you'll just get condescending emails and assignments with very specific instructions and harsh penalties (lose 10% if you use the wrong font). Pay attention to due dates, he moved one from 12 am midnight to 12 pm noon (12 hours earlier), many missed the cutoff and got an F.
This prof gives a book load of notes. The modules are annoyingly long and painful to read altogether. I will have to retake this class because of it. Poor me...
I 100% understand the mixed reviews on this prof. I loved the content and I think it was delivered well. The assignments are graded fairly and really simple. The exams are terrible. Take notes on EVERY little number, name, date. There's literally no way to prepare for some of the questions but just remember they are crazy specific.
