good lecturer, rational, lots of work but you do learn something
the teacher is a great guy, but the course is uncredibly shallow
No Comments
Interesting. You learn from this basic course.
Nice guy but lectures are a little boring!!
If you've taken one course with him, you've taken them all. Redundant. The courses have great potential to be interesting, but his BORING lectures kill all hope. I now show up only to pick up assignments and write tests and I'm doing fine becuase he's
What can I say...the class is incredibly easy, but very very boring. Deslauriers bored me to death, so I skipped more than half my classes. If only he had a better style of teaching. Anyways, A+ class, very easy.
I took this course about a year ago. This course demanded more work than I thought;3 midterms, 4 web assignments. The grading was not that easy, however, it was indeed fair. I have to agree that his lectures can be boring.

The students were hard on him but I thought he was a really great prof.
If you memorize the pages in the text he assigns for tests, you're fine. For research projects presentation is a plus(he loves maps). Also, one 2nd he's nice and the next he'll treat you like a kid.
incredibly confusing lectures, he talks in circles. I stopped going to class because I would get confused about what we were supposed to be learning. Read the material at home, memorize key points, then write the exam. You'll succeed, and he marks easy.
Very approachble and helpful but lectures a little boring
He is a very easy going teacher, very easy to understand in class and very helpfull
Extremely boring, but show up to class and use the time to do some work...otherwise, count how often he raises his hands to emphasize quotations for certain 'Key' words like 'sustainability', 'sustainable development', 'eco-cities'....can be entertaining.
what a loser!one of the worst professers that i've ever had and i've had hernry hornstein!
Wicked class, i learned a lot about the effects of globalization on our natural environment.
Nice person. Helpful. Clear lectures. Just do the work and he marks fair.
Nice teacher however lectures are boring. I wish the desks had pillows(yawn)
He's a very nice person but sometimes lectures in circles.
Did not enjoy his lectures, found them very superficial, he was a bit aggressive in his lectures and in asking for help. However, if you do the work, you'll get a fair grade.
i liked him a lot, always told us what was going to be on the exam, very fair, and has adorable habit of making quotation marks when he speaks
very straight forward...always gives clear assignments...very fair in marking...but lectures are so boring...doen't change her tone of voice...too monotonous...hard to stay awake in class...besides that as an elective...an easy A. i know that's what u guys REALLY wanna know
nice guy!
Always late. He is not really pleasant. He enjoys yelling at students and making seem stupid. Likes to give a lecture about how people think his class is easy so they take it. It wasn't easy at all. Tests are really hard. His lectures are all over the place. Don't take him!
he is very hard to understand and always says "as you would say" and says some strange expression that makes no sense...he speaks english well but forces his eloquence to unabnormal point wherein nothing is easy to understand..the course wasnt hard, but i coudl see how it might be for some...i had 355 with him and wanted to sleep through it.
The material covered in this class was interesting at its core, but so surrounded by his boring droning that it was increadibly difficult to sit through a class. good videos though.
He''s very knowledgable nd approachable. If you do the things required he wont bother you. He has a very thick accent but he uses a lot of vocabulary and doesn't make mistakes when he speaks. The only bad thing is that he talks in circles, making his class extremely boring.
boring, and not interested in the subjects
i hate this class someone shoot me in the head
i wouldn't recommend taking this class. however you can easily get between B and A- without that much work and get between A- and A+ if you do all the readings and pay attention in class (which is almost impossible)
All in all good prof just really Boring to listen to during lectures
The class is very boring. Lectures are brutal. There isn't enough information to cover a full semester. Overall one can obtain a good grade by reading course materials and memorizing what is written on study guides. You can pass without going to class...His accent is thick. He is a hard marker. I wouldn't recommend taking this class.
Nice Man. Terribly confusing. could have been the complex subject matter. Would not take a class with him again.
Useless lectures although entertaining at times. He's everywhere (slides, lectures, his mind, etc). Assignment outlines are repetitive and confusing so write everything/anything you can think of on the subject - just write as much as you can on the subject.
Teacher was nice. He wasnt mean at all. 2 assignments worth in total 20%. Really really easy a bit long. Midterm was easy cuz he told us what was coming. STUDY THE HELL OUT OF HIS NOTES. The long answer questions of midterm and final are from NOTES. READ MY WORDS ""NOTES"". If i knew that from the started i would have gotten an A.
He's French Canadian so people might say he's hard to understand but that's not the case. Also some might say he's boring but I think it's because they don't like the material to start with. Great guy and very knowledgable. FYI Don't watch the habs during class, if he catches you're cooked! lmao
he'll spend the entire class talking about his isn't one of those classes where you can show up on test days and still pass and not lecture at all.
Nice guy, but poor teacher. Makes no sense, and is all over the place with his lectures. I'm amazed at how many people can stay awake or even attend this class. Think he would make a good psychiatrist, but he's not a good teacher.
He is a super-nice guy one on one. But it was hard to follow his class due to being extremely bored. This COULD be an interesting topic, but it's actually painful to sit through. Easy marker, and fair. His lecture notes/slides and project assignments are the opposite of concise. Way too wordy when he doesn't need to be.
AVOID. He's all over the place when lecturing. He is boring. He is alright one on one, but extremely verbose. I lost interest in the subject of the class. He is very arrogant and goes on and on about how busy he is...
The topic matter in the course is quite interesting and practical. Unfortunately, this professor has completely stopped caring abou his profession. Most of the time his ability to convey knowledge ranges from completely incomprehensible to barley bearable. It's not uncommon for him spend over 45 mins reading an assignment outline available online.
The subject of this course is interesting, but the teacher doesn't teach you new things. Most of his examples and movies he shows are from 80's or early 90's. Not much about what's going on now in the world!overhead transparencies are old and unclear.
I registered for Ahsc 310 for the summer term. The prof spent over 45 mins discussing the course outline, then mumbled on and on in circles about NOTHING. He`s very verbose. He then had the nerve to tell the class that he doesn`t believe in giving A`s to students. I dropped his class like a hot potato. DO NOT take!
lectures were a pain, drones on and often goes off topic but hes very approachable, easy class to get a good mark.
Lectures are beyond dull. He's a really nice man, though. I took a class with him 2 years ago and find that he's mellowed out, which is nice. I don't understand how people can do badly on his exams. He TELLS YOU exactly what he will ask you on the exam. He ALWAYS provides a test review. Easy.
Seemed nice at first. Lectures are boring, and if held in a large lecture hall good luck understanding him. He postsnall of his notes online, it is near impossible to take notes because he mumbles and is all over the place. He will refuse to answer questions stating that it is our problem, he covered it x weeks ago, saying its a waste of his time
Arrogant. When asked questions in class will refuse to answer. Says it was covered x weeks ago and that you're wasting his time. Mumbles and hard to understand, notes impossible to take. Clearly has separatist views, and likes to go one as if Quebec were it's own country. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR
His information and notes are much too old and lack modernity. He is passionate and loves to rant but hardly realizes that nobody is keeping track. Dont waste your money or time with the coursepack, he posts everything online. Easy to approach, hard to understand, hard to stay awake, hard to attend, easy grader, easy assignments, easy class.
His notes are all from the textbook and are just basic definitions. He is so boring!!!!! He will spend 45 minutes going over one example that is not relevant to the topic you are learning. He often spends an hour going over an assignment guideline that is online and self explanatory. He repeats himself too much and is not very friendly at all.
really really really nice guy, knows his stuff. the material itself is kind of boring so i recommend studying from his powerpoints. good elective, essay outlines are really simple but the exams are a bit boring and tedious.
Spends a lot of time mumbling about irrelevant THINGS and is hard to understand because of his thick accent. The work isn't too difficult, but I would not recommend.
This class was frustrating because I really enjoy geography. Prof often rambles for long periods of time about things that are irrelevant to the course. Assignments are easy but exam is a little more difficult...just be sure to read your textbook a lot and go through the powerpoints on your own and you'll be fine.
Yes he rambles, don't need to pay attention to lectures, they're painfully boring. 2 essays, 2 film reports (easy), he's a fair grader though. Just study terms in PPs & read book carefully. Tests format: multiple choice, define terms, explain terms. Final isn't cumulative. Very nice guy, super patient with rude students. Take for easy A, just study
Very hard to listen to.Nothing really seems relevant. The book is easier to understand, but I was still lost with that. Got an extremely low grade on a paper, but all he said was it was well written but "was too much like an essay" even though it wasn't. Couldn't tell me why paper grade was low and changed it to passing last minute.Tests confusing.
Really boring, so hard to pay attention in class, nothing he teaches seems relevant and I really never knew what he wanted us to actually study or learn. Told class not to bother studying certain things, that end up being on the test. Rambles about meaningless things in lectures. Seems like an alright guy, but for a professor, definitely avoid.
The man talks and talks and talks. Sometimes I think he's having a conversation with himself and not teaching. When students raise their hands he interrupts them and then if he knows a student will challenge what he is saying he will ignore them all together. Frustrating.
nice teacher, hard to pay attention because he talks on and on and on. Otherwise its an interesting course, teacher tells you exactly what is on the midterm.
Avoid this class! This teacher has been teaching this class forever!! He is so confusing. His notes are everywhere, you'll want to fall asleep in class because he starts talking about a topic and then starts rambling on about something completely different for the rest of the class. Essay outline very confusing and midterm was very hard!
Easy enough class but not really a fun course to take. Really boring lectures that are not needed at all. The prof rambles and is quite confusing. Nice enough guy but a horrible lecturer. If you take it, skip the classes and just keep up to date on the moodle with readings, assignments and test dates.
Save yourself. Take this class with another Prof, because he cannot lecture. He is passionate about the topic, but he is in his little world. It is INSANELY hard to keep up in the lectures.
First 20-30 min is him rehashing the same SIMPLE concepts from last lecture and complaining about students leaving early/showing up late. Covers a couple topics then talks in circles saying the same thing a million different ways. Skip class and just read the book and take detailed notes. Likes to give examples in French but they're not on tests
He is a nice teacher overall and approachable. However, that being said, it is extremely hard to concentrate during his lectures, as he often goes off topic and you try your best to stay focused but probably end falling asleep.. He does give an outline of what to expect in the exam but there are small details that he picks on in the exam.
Just don't take his class, change the other professor
Needs to be fired or retired a.s.a.p. unorganize , monotonous, strong french accent or speech defienciency. Talk for hours about everything and nothing. Rarely gives break for his 3 hour lecture. Pointless going to class you won't learn anything relevant. Hard grader
Awful. Lectures are about nothing and go on for ever. His english is poor. His marking is inconsistent. The notes he posts online are incoherent. He writes like a retard - abrvts words unnecessarily, puts in <<weird>> punctuation for some reason, AND OVER USES CAPS. You'll end up re-reading everything 10 times trying to understand what he's saying.
Wow. Boring teacher, just babbles on wasting time. Explains about what he`s GOING to do more then actually doing it. Midterm is difficult, assignments are fairly straight forward and easy and the final is okay. Going to class is a waste, soooooooooo must wasted time, too boring to focus.
Listening to his two-hour lecture was a challenge, even more so because it was from 8:30pm to 10:30pm. He talks about the same thing over and over again. The exams and assignments were straightforward and not too difficult. I strongly recommend reading the relevant chapters of the textbook though.
There are many things in the test that were not mention in class.
Although I can give this guy an A for personality, I cannot disregard his inability to answer emails promptly, as well as the fact that his lectures are boring. The only reason that I would give this guy a good rating is because he does provide help whenever needed, and he is an easy marker.
Oh Pierre. I'm sure you are a good person, but please stop being a teacher. You are zooo boring and you repeat yourself. Guys, there was nobody in the class after 3 weeks, or people come and watch a movie. If you can, DO NOT TAKE HIM. He's a fair grader thought but his lectures will just kill you bit by bit. No need the book, he makes powerpoints.
Professor really enjoys his tangents The notes he posts are awful poorly photocopied pages out of order and upside down. Lectures are unstructured and confusing, but at least he gives very specific exam advice, which is essential to a good mark, Book, and CP readings essential, Only one that teaches 355, so no other option.
Lectures are not specific, goes off on tangents and speaks in a monotone voice. I read everything out of the textbook and used certain PDF's he posted on moodle and I have an A in this class. It's a pity because the content is interesting when you read it yourself but going to the lectures is so discouraging. Easy grader none the less.
Very unclear teaching. Doesn't have a clear lecture plan, kind of all over the place.
Lectures are disorganized and often irrelevant to what will be on the test. Assignment outlines are also equally unclear, overly wordy, and with arbitrary guidelines that have little to do with producing a quality paper. The course is easy only if you read and memorize all the assigned readings, but don't expect to be given much focus or direction.
Very long boring lectures, I couldn't listen if I tried. Unorganized, unstructured notes and ppts. Difficult to study all the material his personal notes.
Not organized, a bit boring the lectures. But you should go see him before any test or assignment, it helps a lot!! also, follow the instruction.
Lectures always get off track, I've ended up skipping many. Overall a very interesting class. The prof is fair in grading. LOVE how he gives a test study guide!!! I like how I'm not graded strictly on multiple choice. Essay is short and sweet. Group project is an easy grade booster. Tests are fair. Read, study the guide and you're set!
Uninspiring
Provides a study guide for the exams so attendance is not necessary. If you follow the study guide perfectly you will do great.
So I just had an intro class with this prof and I was excited to study Canadian Environmental Issues. Never again. Blamed his TA for his decision to make 40% of our grade team work and then admitted it was because it lightened the work load. Told us we'd fail if we didn't get the brand new edition of the 110$ book. Rambled incessantly. No thanks!
His lectures are very boring and hard to follow. His Powerpoint slides provide little to no help when studying for his exams and are not even covered fully in class. If you do not provide the exact answer he is looking for, you will not receive a full grade. The class itself is not the problem, but the professor who makes it hard and boring.
This teacher is an easy marker; his tests are very easy if you study the concepts. He gives a study guide in advance which is very helpful and also why more than half of the class never show up. A couple of papers to write throughout the course but not that hard. Attending his office hrs can be very helpful!
The reviews are right! I chose GEOG 200 because I have heard that it was an easy A but it turned out to be kind of hard. The midterm was SO hard and the final was alright but you also have to do 3 papers which takes a lot of time. As for the teacher, his lectures were SUPER boring and he tends to go off topic which makes it hard to follow.
Very poor lecturing skills. He speaks with a mumbled voice, has poor english, and often goes on tangents. Constantly complains. Terrible organization. Notes and powerpoints are scrambled and disorganized. Does not allow questions to be asked in tests. Only positive thing is that he gives detailed study guides. Dont bother going to class. Just read.
If you have him, drop the class ! I repeat drop the class. He is just the worst teacher Ive had so far !
Great professor, he might seem all over the place at first, but trust me, his study guides are great! he provides you will all the material you need to succeed in his course. Great prof! would gladly take more than one course with him! Team Deslauriers!
incredibly boring, goes on long-wending off topic tangents all the time, very unaccessible outside of class, he puts all his notes online as well as powerpoints so you dont need to go to class to do well. also we had to buy a 120$ textbook, we used it a lot, but pretty steep for an elective imo, would not take a class with him again
At first, I was hesitant in choosing Pierre for the course but given that the reviews are overwhelmingly negative. However, since he was the only one teaching GEO 203 - ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN CANADA, I decided to give it a go. Fair grader, study guide helps a ton, groupwork encouraged (I was by myself) and overall, interesting lectures.
Listening to his many tangents gets boring pretty quickly. Not clear at all when he marks. Should've got an A- but he curved down. Wouldn't take again.
His tangents are horrible. Spends half the lecture talking about the moodle page and never gives a complete lecture. His study guides are all you need for the tests and the papers are easy to do well on. I would not recommend
I found that his lectures were a bit aimless and he often went on tangents. The material itself wasn't illuminating and I felt was a bit dry or obvious, making him very difficult to follow at times. However, he gives an outline on the exam and pretty much blatantly tells you what's going to be on the test. If you get a bad grade, it's really on you
Pierre is really not that bad. If you attend class you might hear him rant, let it roll of your shoulders. The class material was awesome, the book is great, easy to read. You dont need to attend class, he gives you a clear outline of what you need to study- no surprises- very easy to do well. Overall, I learned a lot in this class.
The course topic is broad (Environment & Society) and Pierre is extremely knowledgeable, he is like a dictionary of information. But it's true he often goes on tangents & it's true this can be frustrating. But in the end I learnt a lot, he is very helpful, approachable & available during office hours/ after class, and has a unique sense of humour!
Pierre is not bad as a professor. He does go off on tangents during lectures and if you can sort of ignore his ranting, the course itself is pretty interesting. His exam guides are very helpful and if you study whats on the guides, one can easily do well.
Boring lecture. We make very little progression during the lecture because he teaches very slowly. Most information he says are not important, however he does sometime hints us when such question is in the exam. The assignment are graded fairly. The exams are heavily dependent on memorization, whether it is dates, numbers, or chemical formula.
Good teacher, would take again.
VERY BORING LECTURES. however, I would take him anytime because he gives you all the chapters and pages you need to read to prepare for his exams. very fair grading. I would recommend you to take his classes, avoid his lectures and focus on his outlines (gives it prob 1-2 weeks before each exams)
Meh. tends to talk about things unrelated to the course and generally rumbles but he always shares what is going to be on the midterm and final which is nice.
Very monotone. Most student who go to class (maybe half of the class) end up drifting off to sleep or browsing their computers. Half the time discusses class material (which can all be found in the textbook) and the other half, he veers off into weird subjects completely unrelated to what will be on exams. Memorize information to pass exams.
he is sweet but my god he is so bad at giving lectures. he goes on so many tangents and is very confusing when he tries to explain things. he also randomly says things in french. he is very sweet but beware, you will have a hard time learning things in his lectures
He's not the best lecturer and he usually goes off on tangents. He also randomly throws in french words/sayings in lectures? He uploads everything on Moodle so you don't really have to go to class. He posts really good study guides for the tests that basically tells you what's on the test. You do have to do a bit of writing.
He's not a terrible lecturer, but not the best as he does go off in tangents. The class isn't an easy A but it isn't overly difficult. Assignments were actually kinda fun to write, the paper can be done with a partner and he gives test study guides that are really helpful
I'm in the English department and didn't know what to expect from taking a geography course, but it ended up being a good experience. Pierre isn't the best with technology so the lectures weren't the best, but the course material was interesting. He gives you all the information you need for the tests so it was easy to not go to class
Confusing - I don't think I have ever cried so much for a class in my life.
Worst professor I've had at Concordia! He was very rude and arrogant, he muted his class and would not look at the chat so no one was able to ask questions or get help he left us with a question period and even then was rude and cut the time short and told people he had no time for questions. His exams were hard and the lectures are lengthy
Great teacher! Highly recommended, very supportive and available. Take notes, stay the whole class and you'll be able to get through the class with no problems!
Subject isnt too hard the issue is the subject learning structure. Like where are we going with this???
His lectures are very boring. Even when I am not sleepy, his lectures make me want to sleep. The material is not that difficult. Read the chapters before an exam and you are good.
All you need to know about this guy is he talks nonstop, unless you want to get a headache from all the meaningless rambling, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Pierre is a very sweet man, means well but for the love of god he never stops rambling. Because of this, it makes his course extremely dull, draining and ultimately, sleep inducing. He gives clear guidelines for tests and other projects however, which is greatly appreciated and comes handy.
Honestly, lectures are a bit boring, but Prof Deslauriers makes studying VERY straight forward, which is a godsend thank you so much.
With all due respect, the teacher is great, approachable and easy to talk to BUT the guidelines, notes and power-point notes are a bit confusing. While the homeworks are easy and managable, their guidelines made it more confusing than necessary. Overall, I would take this teacher again ONLY if the content/guidelines were less confusing.
have you ever heard a history teacher tell you, "you don't have to memorize dates" or a geography teacher who told you that "geography isn't about learning the countries on the map"? well, not in this class. you're gonna have to remember the exact date and location of where this man tied his shoes. even if your memory is good, i'd still avoid.
He's a very sweet prof but sometimes he'll ramble a bit in his lectures so it'll get a bit confusing. He's very nice and approachable so if you are ever confused with the instructions, please talk to him as he's quite nice. The slides are a good guide but they tend to be quite confusing.
Very hard to understand during lectures, tends to ramble quite a bit on one or two subtopics within a unit. Papers are easy enough, but the midterm exam and final structures seem way too taxing for an intro-level geography course. Would not take again.
The prof rambles a lot in class so it is hard to know what is going to be evaluated on the test, and what is not. I don't recommend taking his class, unless you have an open mind and are willing to listen about the anecdotes he slides in about each topic. He is very knowledgeable. If you only care about the grade, this lecture will be hard for you.
