I like her lecture. I am not engrossed in the topic, but I pay attention and find it interesting. She may seem dry and boring, but when teaching chemistry to an audience that is mostly asleep, you can only do so much.
Not very hard because it was a lecture, but she talks like its complicated. Notes are straight from the book, even the pictures. Just reading the book and asking questions in lab/rec. should get most through. Not many options with basic chem teachers, so you might just get stuck w/ her.
She reads off the slide show and doesn't explain. Skips steps when actually teaching (rare) and is very boring. Her notes are the text book, not an easy class if you don't already have a good foundation on chemistry.
Her slides came directly from the book, so there was no point in coming to class. But her tests seemed totally out of left field. You had be be sure you knew every word for the caption under Figure B on page 862. ????
Not helpful in class. Never go to her office so don't know how it's like. Better off study myself by reading every single page, and do HW. But she gives nice curves though. Skip class frequently and got about 120 percent average/
She is very nice and talks alot. She allows you to rewrite your papers for a new grade. Take her.
Lecture is boring, but the class isn't that bad at all. Major curves on tests (the lowest is dropped), and she is very willing to help. Many complain about that class, but really, if you do the homework in a timely fashion and put a litle effort into studying, its an easy class
she is boring. monotone. 116 is a lot harder than 115. she's pregnant, so she's never in her office. pleban isn't much better, so if you have to take chem, you're screwed. do the homework.
Dr.McCoy is kind of boring at times but she is a really good teacher. She gives a lot of examples, and go over whichever homework problems you want her to. Her class should be an Easy A, as long as you do the homework and study.
I think she's given up on her work, she just uses the power point slides on blackboard. she's very helpful and nice. if u want to pass the class, look at the text book examples, go to reviews, and DO THE HOMEWORK. she curves nicely and is waaay better than Pleban.
Dr.McCoy was pregnant when I took her spring 05 but class is really boring and its right by starbucks so it was really distracting and shes boring and all she does is powerpoint slides so youre not really paying attention DO THE HOMEWORK it will make or break your grade and go to office hours shes really helpful and will give you the hw answers
Horrible class structure - the labs and lectures never coincided!
DO THE HOMEWORK!! The class is useless because she just goes through PP slides that are posted on BB anyway. If you do the homework and look through the book the class hould be an easy A, especially since she curves the heck out of it.

Worst prof I've ever had. No reason to go to class... all she does is read powerpoints word for word. "Teaches," if you can call it that, the very basics then gives ridiculous test questions that require far more knowledge than you'll ever get from going to her class. Don't take general chem at ODU if you can help it... Pleban is every bit as terrible so you're qauranteed to have a bad teacher.
She just reads from the powerpoint, not interesting, and then they give you the hard ass questions from the book. THE POWERPOINT DOESNT COVER THE HARD STUFF. It just gives you the concepts that dont make any sense.
ive rarely attended lecture due to the absolute mind-numbing boredom i experienced. she reads powerpoint all class. if i wanted that i can take them off blackboard and save an hour of sleep
Do not take this course at ODU if you dont have to. If you do, don't drop it, she counts on a certain number of people to drop so that she wont have to curve, if you stay in the course she will curve at the end of the semester.
The material is not easy. Study. She, as a teacher, genuinely cares about you as a student. She is helpful as long as you let her know you need help. She can't read your mind. Be upfront and she will help you out.
she is an okay teacher...she dosent really teach you anything...you learn by teaching yourself the book. Her office hours suck. Do your homework and go to labs because it will really help ur grade. Lectures are EXTREMELY boring and all she does is read her powerpoint slide to you...Mrs. Pleblan really isnt a better choice so ur screwed either way!
Hardest class I have ever taken. Worst teacher! The other Chem teachers at ODU are horrible too. Take the class somewhere else! Not helpful and the tests cover info not taught in lectures. Don't go to the lectures it is better to teach yourself!
I suspect Dr. McCoy is crippled by Dept standards. She was helpful during office hours and responsive to e-mails. I now recall that she covered everything on tests and provided covert hints to certain questions. The book and webassign stink, but that's not her fault.
Pinky rocks!!!
No point in going to the lecture. All she does is read the notes that she posts on blackboard. She doesnt explain the material well at all. The test are not like the notes and the webassign. Study the book for the test (best bet)
Very confusing and take advantage of her office hours.
There is absolutely nothing in her lecture that is not on the the internet. And the powerpoint is made up of pictures that are already in your book. Just read the book chapter by chapter and don't bother with the lecture class. Go to all the labs and do all the homework AND go to the exam reviews. She gives a majority of the answers to homework
Not clear teaching style
dont go to the lectures because they dont really help you since all she does is read from the pp slides. i suggest you read the book and do the homework and you will do good in the class
This professor is very boring and not helpful. I would e-mail her questions I was having off the homework and she would give me so off the wall answer and not even bother to help. The lectures are boring and not helpful at all. She likes to make tests harder than what they should have been. I would advise to take the course elsewhere than ODU
She reads off powerpoint slides every lecture. Gives homework assignments that don't make sense half the time. Class average on tests weren't great at all. Lectures arent fun. She curves if your final grade is good.
She sucks! I would go to her during office hours and it still didnt have an effect. Eventually I started using the lab instructor for a professor. She is LAZY the powerpoints come from the cd-rom that comes from the book all she does is copy and paste. The only extra credit assignment she gave us came from a 600 level graduate test; its online.
ODU NEEDS A NEW INTRO TO CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT! McCoy did not teach anything but the slides! If Chemistry is not a required course, avoid it with all you can!! If you need it, take it somewhere else and transfer the credits!
This teacher sucks. She makes the simpliest concepts harder than they are. She'll make mistakes on the homework and still mark it wrong. When I took her class the average for the tests was a 70D. She didn't curve any tests, she said she was going to curve the final exam and she didn't. She didn't give any extra credit because she "has kids."
Seriously, dont bother going to class unless your looking for a good nap. The homework is ridiculous, sometimes taking me more than 5 hours a week, and the tests were even MORE ridiculous. Tests are much harder than homework. Be prepared to fail every test and you should do alright. Just make sure to get almost perfect on homework and quizzes.
A= You know what you are doing... B= You mostly know what you are doing.. trick questions or simple errors gets you... C= You are good at BS'ing and showing work to fill up space.... D... You dont know anything but you show some chicken scratch.... F..... You dont have any idea what chichkenscratch to write
she only really does whats in the book, so coming to class isnt very helpful. however, attendance is taken sometimes for small credit. all i can say is that she is better than pleban, so if you have to take chemistry, take mccoy
Hard. I thought it wouldn't be that bad, but I was fooled. I'm a good student and this is the first class i've ever gotten a bad grade in.
tests are too easy if u read the book carefully, do the homework carefully, attend class even though attendance is not mandatory, and go to her during office hours... the key is persistance... hang in there and u will do fine
HW helps alot!
Good teacher, only if u read book. She tries to teach whatever she knows, very helpful during office hours
This woman does not know what she is talking about. If you ask her a question, she totally goes around it and never answers it. Don't bother attending class-she just drones on about nothing at all. You're better off teaching yourself the information.
I personally am a good student and with my other classes I regularly attend. In Mrs. McCoy's class, I stopped going half way through the semester becuase I just couldn't stand her. She started class late 5-10 minutes every class period and she didn't seem prepared at all for class or what we were going to cover. I don't recommend her at all!
Good teacher.. I got an A in there and did not have to take the final... The way to do it is just read the book carefully do, do the homework, and ask questions if you do not understand something. She gives TONS of extra credit on homework tests everything really. She also lets you redo the test questions you got wrong for half credit...
horrible teacher! cannot teach, she messes up constantly
Over-all, i enjoyed this class. It is a pretty easy A if you do the online h-work and decent on the tests. Sometimes she could be unclear but was helpful if you had a question. Gave a lot of extra credit on the homework, so it was a fairly easy course.
Overall I thought she was a very good professor. If you do the homework and pay attention to the lecture, you should be able to pass.
Okay this lady was useless. She ended up confusing more people than helping. She always messes up during her examples. She's the only one that you can take for CHEM101, as of now. So form a study group early, or else you will be lost
Class is optional, can only help you but doesn't hurt you. Exams are multiple choice and not that difficult. Take own notes from the textbook and do not really rely on class notes. Use office hours if you are confused, she is more helpful during those.
Shes not a very good teacher, its hard to understand her, her lectures are boring, and she basically cant teach.
I don't know what everyone is talking about, McCoy is an easy A. Textbook is not really needed exept for the online homework which is also extremely easy. Tests are easy, homework is easy, the class is an easy A. I mean I got a 98 average so it can't be that bad!!
she's a good teacher also the class isn't that hard as long as you show up for class and do the online hmwk, you should be fine
pinky mccoy is not a good teacher :[ she is consantly getting things wrong while teaching from the slides she takes directly from the book. she is sneeky on tests and likes to slip in things that are beyond what was taught, or expected to know. the online homework is complete bull. it's so picky and is really frustrating, also very hard and sneeky.
worst teacher ever. unable to understand her, her presentations continuously contradicted itself, and just all around horrible
It is not too hard to receive an A or B if you study a little and teach yourself but she is inconsistent during lectures. she constantly corrects herself and makes things seem harder than they really are. If you have a grades thats borderline even if its .9 she won't round up unless you have good attendance.lectures are boring ...reads off slides
McCoy is an awful teacher. Plain and simple. Run.
Dr. McCoy's summer session class was easier than her regular 16 weeks semster course, I took the summer session and got an A... It is not that hard to do, you have to go to class as she gives out in-class assingments... Do your very best on the homework, and use the book to study for the test. All in all an easy A for those who work for it.
I dont even know where to begin with this crazy tail woman. I took her class summer 08 tell me why out of 41 students only less than 10 percent of the class passed?.! For the most part I will not miss her, maybe she'll be better off teaching another level of Chemistry.
horrible professor enough said!
UGH! What to say?! She corrects herself so much that you get confused and once she's done correcting herself, you're like "now what was the answer?" There's so much to say...She's AWFUL. if you can help it, don't take her class
Caring instructor, comments alot on the material so people who have been out of school for awhile, a semester or two, or find the information confusing or difficult, will not get loss. May anoy some people but most find it helpfull. The school needs recitation or homework sessions for students, but that's a different issue.
She's a terrible teacher, but I wouldn't say this class is impossible. As long as you teach yourself everything you will do fine. Also, she is extremely condescending one on one! Attendance is manditory, but the lecture is useless. She's lucky the material is simple, or no one would pass.
Dr. McCoy was very difficult! Dr. McCoy was a very difficult grader, making no attempts to grade for understanding. Questions about anything must be written down and then answered later. Her lectures were very scattered. This is all coming from an A student who never missed a class or lecture. Too many hours spent on a 100 level class!
horrible teacher...... really reminds me alot of a robot wat you see is wat you get!
A copy and paste from her email: "No final grades will be rounded." I got an 86.9 (B) but in almost any other class, the Prof would've rounded off my score to an 87 for a B+ Take her only if you want your GPA to suffer.
she made 3+ errors during the first month of class. horrible teaching, but read the book, complete the masteringchem hw and you'll do fine. helpful during office hours but almost never emails back. let's face it, none of the chem teachers at odu are "easy," so take the initiative and teach yourself. it's college. grow up, people.
She's really nice and trys hard. Class is just hard for some people. Involves lots of math.
Dr. McCoy doesn't right her own slides and it is apparent when she reads a mistake and is confused by it. Her grading on free response is a bit harsh and she instructs her T.A's to do the same. Overall she is extremely knowledgable in chem and is willing to help you, but you have to do alot of book reading and bridge the communication gap.
You will probably need to study for your tests, and buy the book. As long as you complete the online homework, it's debatable if you even need to go to the lecture. There are examples but she's pretty boring to listen to, and the book helped far more than my notes did. Labs are easy if you pay attention, but also not very interesting.
She goes over all the basic stuff and you have to basically teach yourself how to apply it. Do all homework and make sure you do well in lab. The test are very challenging and are more than likely nothing you she talked about in class.
My 11th grade teacher was 3x better. She's a nice lady and all but we need a teacher who wont go over our head.
She uses slideshows based on different book than one she "required" for class. Easily stumped during classes when student has question. Often dismisses questions in class without answering and does the same when e-mailed about questions. Repeatedly goes over concepts that are understood, but does not go into enough detail about harder concepts.
I find her very fair. Her tests are a little on the hard side but she gives you tons of extra credit, i was getting a C average on the test but was able to keep a 98% in the class over all because of all the extra credit. All you need to do is show up and do the work and you will be fine in this class. She is also more then ready to help if you ask
OK 1ST OF ALL I PAID FOR THIS CLASS TO BE TAUGHT BY THE INSTRUCTOR MS MCCOY NOT TO BE TAUGHT BY THE STUDENTS! SHE CONFUSED HERSELF AND CONTRADICTED HERSELF AND EACH TIME A STUDENT HAD TO STOP AND CORRECT HER! HOMEWORK IS HARD! THE TEST WERE HARD. NO ANSWER KEY TO THE HOMEWORK AND NO CURVES EVEN WHEN WE HAD BAD WEATHER AND SCHOOL CLOSED!!!!
Attendance isn't mandatory but she does factor it into your grade so it may be wise for you to show up. Unless you can teach yourself chemistry come to class . ! Tests are a bit difficult but if you study you can Pass . ! Do the homework too and make sure you get the clicker questions right .! The extra credit can make all the difference in the end
Definitely read the chapters yourself before class...she makes alot of errors in her examples and confuses everyone. She is just reading off the textbook's ppt and doesnt finish everything that'll be on the test, so teach yourself or get a tutor. Not hard at all if you dont let her confuse u...attend class for the extra credit!
The Worst! Unfair and often students had to correct her!! What!!!!! I was sooooo confused! Why does she have job!!???
i never listened to a thing she said because her teaching methods suck. this is the kind of class where you basically have to teach yourself. i passed her class with a B. i wouldn't reccomend her but unfortunately you have no choice but to take her because she is the only teacher for this level.
I took chem 103 but when classes began she told me it's the same as chem 105 . She does tend to go through her powerpoint slides a bit fast but I assume it's b/c she records her lectures and uploads them to blackboard . If you aren't the best in Chem don't worry! Just make sure you get all the extra credit you can and have at least a B avg on tests
She will continue to contradict herself in class. Read the book, teach yourself you should be fine for part I which is inorganic chem. Come to class the clicker questions help your grade. She curves nothing. The math is what makes it easy. IF you suck at math and chem you will struggle. Honestly she sucks but you can do it.
Honestly, she can't teach the material in class but you should be fine if you read the required chapters before each exam. Teach yourself the material, don't rely on her because she confuses herself and the students in class with examples. Overall, not as bad as some people say. Easy grade if you take the time to review on your own.
This teacher sucks. She's seriously awful. Always contradicting herself and confusing students. Even mixes up easy examples. Doesn't curve grades at all even though the avg on test was between 50-67. When asked if she would curve she laughed and said "I don't do curves". Fails the majority of the class. She doesn't care. She shouldn't be a teacher!
Biochemistry lab is certainly not an easy class, and Dr. McCoy makes you work. Overall, I enjoyed the class, although she had a bad habit of leaving early and letting the TAs do all the actual lab work. Although the TAs knew what to do, I'd really rather a PhD at least be there as it is a 400 level class. Make sure your notebook is always up to par
She does tend to get mixed up every now and then but overall great teacher. Help sessions do help. Its a tough course so be prepared to study and memorize a lot!
TERRIBLE!!! I had to reteach myself all of the material and I still almost failed the class! She is not helpful at all when it comes to her TA's for the labs. I changed my major because I hate chem so much!
One of the worst, inconsiderate professors I have ever had. Do not take her class.
She's not a very good teacher. She gets confused all time and has to get corrected by students. DO THE BONUS QUESTIONS ON EXAMS OR ELSE YOU GET POINTS TAKEN OFF OF EXAM!!!!!!
It's a hard class. Just do your homework and read the chapters. Always contradicting herself; students usually correct her. She does schedule help sessions at inconvientent times. Make sure to come to class, clicker points add up and help your grade alot!
She is not a good professor. You should not take her if you have no chem background. She gets confused and she makes everyone else confused. she flies thru the notes and leaves people lost. I had to reteach myself every single chapter. She does not curve the tests even if the class average is a F. she does give extra credit on tests and homework
Attendance is not really mandatory however the clicker questions help you receive extra points. To me she was hard to follow during class and sometimes was unsure about her answers to problems.I would not recommend her for a teacher.
Only 2 professors teach this course. Seen both, go with McCoy. Her class is hard and exams r tricky. Study a lot and get help if needed. come to class to get extra points and hw always has extra points. She can be confusing, but go to class just for the clicker points
Not the best teacher for someone who hasn't taken high school chemistry. I understood since I had seen majority of the material. Did all my homework, came to class everyday and studied notes everyday. I came out the class with a 96%. If you actually try and put in the work you'll be fine
Class was not an easy class at all. But what chemistry class is? She is very helpful. Attend every class to recieve clicker points. Her test are easy if you study. The only problem is that she dont curve. But over all I enjoyed the class
I didn't take chemistry in high school and I certainly didn't learn anything from her. I taught myself everything on the homework and then the tests would be completely different. She moves very quickly and was'nt helpful when I went to her. Go to class for the clicker points even if you don't understand anything- that is your only extra credit.
Honesty, she does go through power points and confuses herself but for everyone complaining about teaching themselves, its a college course, you're not going to have the teachers baby you like in high school. All you need to do is go to class and get clicker points, do the homework and study and you'll get an A.
This was by far one of the worst professors I've ever had. She is teaching material she doesn't fully understand (She has even given exams where some of the questions had NO correct answer). Students (including myself) have had to correct her exam for her. I had teach myself everything.
I really liked this teacher. She has review session and many ways to practice. Other students complain about her but they are the students who all want easy As and get As without doing work. There are two chemistry teachers, McCoy and Moloney, they share the same test but McCoy's class always has the higher average. She teaches matieral alot
DO NOT TAKE HER. Yes, I understand this is college & the work is going to be harder, but I studied for every test and got D's & F's. I got 100's on my homework but did terrible on te tests. My average was a 59.4 and 60 is passing &she REFUSED to give me the 60 so I could receive credit, therefore I have to retake the entire class.Very heartless
She is a great professor, you just have to get to know her. She is extremely helpful if you ask her. Her class goes fast because there is a lot of material to cover. Learn to love your textbook because it's your lifeline! She is understanding for you but she's not going to just give you an A. Her tests are straight from the homework and book.
It's very fast pace. She does take the time to give extra examples but you have to say you need more. The thing I don't like is the way she teaches. She makes mistakes OFTEN!Almost every class she has to correct herself. She has to take some time and realize that no everybody will get this material right off so make sure you tell us the right info.
She rarely goes an entire class period without getting confused. She gets confused when students ask questions and then confuses the entire class. She uses clicker questions and rarely knows the answers to her won questions.
The class was somewhat easy if you go and get extra help. she confuses her self a lot which confuses the class. Just make sure you go to every class. She gives extra credit. and test are vey tricky.
Dr. McCoy mixes up her facts or numbers often, which can confuse someone who is struggling to get the material. I honestly just used my textbook to follow along in class (Powerpoints are taken right from the book) and to do my homework. Do all the homework, modules, practice exams, and help sessions, and you should be fine.
She is by far the WORST professor I've ever had! She confuses herself a lot and her tests are very hard. I didn't do well in the class; I studied, did the homework, extra credit, got my attendance points and clicker points, and went to tutoring! I never did well on the tests because they were so hard. DO NOT TAKE HER!
She is not very explanatory nor does she take time to make sure everyone understands. She moves through slide shows where it is impossible to take notes!
Dr. McCoy is hands down the worst professor I've ever had. She can no get through an entire 50 minute class with out confusing herself. During th clicker quizzes, she confuses herself and often has to ask the class which answer is the right one. She says it herself that she does not care if the entire class fails. DO NOT TAKE
Absolutely disliked her class. She does provide help, but you have to take extra time with her questionable explanations. The homework is doable, but it's hardly covered in the exam. Her practice exams don't really help you because they are easier than the actual exam. Only good thing about her is that she provides extra credit during lecture.
Okay, so she gives lots of oppurtunities to earn extra credit, but it is only to compensate for her lack of consitency. She lacks professionalism and will make sure not a single laptop is being used but doesn't attempt classroom management that actually takes care of excess chatter or distractions. It's like she sets you up for failure.
This class was absolutely horrible. Tests do not accurately reflect the homework or material covered in class. She gives clicker questions almost every class, so it is important to go to class. Buy the textbook, her slideshows are literally the book on the board. It is difficult to take notes in this class. Not very good at asking questions.
dont take this class with her it will screw up your gpa. her tests dont reflect the material in class. i sat in the front of every single lecture worked my butt off to get a C+ i even wrote her a nice email at the end of the semester because i was 2pts away from a B and she refused to bump it up.she is a teacher that likes seeing kids fail
This professor is Not a good professor at all. Half of what we learn isn't on the exams and clicker questions and homework isn't worth as much as it should be. Half of the exams I could of passed but she takes off too many points for one question. I would not recommend her to anyone!
I would recommend her! If you go to class for clicker points they help greatly. Do the extra credit, it does help! And READ THE TEXTBOOK- it will help you get a much higher grade on the test. I finished the class with a 98.9 A. Even if chemistry isn't your touch, you will easily be able to pass the class.
This teacher is extremely helpful! She has review sessions where she helps you out every week. Coming to class is a must because clicker questions help with attendance points. Do the extra credit! Most importantly, it's necessary to review the book. Her PowerPoint slides are based exactly on the book, and reading the book was a great review.
Awful class. She would confuse herself and in turn confuse students. Test material was not covered in class. Very unorganized. I would not recommend this teacher. And If you have to I would recommend taking a lighter course load so you can focus all your energy on this class.
I learned a lot from her class. It's definitely not an easy A class, you actually have to DO WORK and STUDY. Her class is harder than Moloney's but you learn a lot more from her and do better on the final. I didn't use the book, only her slides and got an A+, it wasn't easy. Go to her tutor sessions and ask her for help, it'll really help.
I studied my butt off for this class and did all the homeworks. Its a difficult class not for the light hearted. she is a relativly good teacher she explains things pretty well, and she holds help sessions. It would be wise to have study groups, and get help if you are struggling with any kind of problem solving with the chem math
This teacher seriously cannot teach. I took her last semester, and she makes her own tests which are a huge mess. Literally, I say this because she has to omit problems that she's screwed up. The class average last semester was a 61, so currently this semester, most of those students are taking chemistry again. DO NOT TAKE PINKY for chemistry!
Doesn't know how to teach chemistry. She confuses herself while teaching. I recommend taking this class at a community college.
Worst teacher ever! So many inconsistencies from lecture to what is in the book. She had to omit questions from tests because they were to confusing to the class. She would correct herself while giving the lecture. She would say something then immediately "Wait, that's wrong, sorry".
she teaches the wrong ways and corrects herself, on tests she has many mistakes, if u get easily confusedd dont take her. There is alot of extra credit opportunity, showing up to class gives you points towards the test so id go. use the online connect its very helpful. overrall not bad shes not a good teacher but not terrible either since not hard
She didn't always know what she was talking about. She confused herself and the class. I couldn't learn from her. I only managed to pass thanks to her bonus clicker points
SHE IS HORRIBLE. She makes the students feel like they can't ask questions without getting a smirk from her, she gets confusing during lectures because she questions her work, and is very spiteful. Example: will assign an in-class assignment the day before a holiday so if you leave early or don't come then you don't get credit.
Dr. McCoy really isn't that bad of a professor. I finished the class with an A because I read the book with made the tests easy. Just read the book, do the homework, and come to class and you'll be fine.
worst teacher ever !
The chem department at ODU is rife with bad professors. McCoy is one of the worst. Glosses over complex material, then writes technical exams. Doesn't give a schedule so you can read ahead. Says "plan on a chapter a week", but skips around in the book. Gives graded, in-class assignments on material she just taught that day. Avoid at all costs
Don't take Biochemistry with her! The rest of the reviews are from intro chemistry, so that should tell you something! Dr. McCoy does not deserve to be teaching this class. She wastes time and is super confusing. Instead of reviewing for tests, you will spend time doing pointless arts and crafts.
Professor Mccoy is a HORRIBLE teacher. She's actually, with no exaggeration, the worst teacher I've ever had. She isn't clear on her work. She actually is confused and unsure of a lot of things she does. Her problem questions for the test are things that she's never even taught in class or anything you would know on your own.
This subject is just hard in general, she breaks it down as much as she can, regardless you have to study!! She has 3 test and a final.
I felt like she was a good teacher. She offered extra credit which always helps.
I really liked Pinky, and I thought she was helpful. Theres A LOT of extra credit given. and 3 tests and a final. Lowest test grade is replaced by final if that score is higher. Make sure to go to review sessions, they are VERY helpful. come to class for clicker points.Youtube is a real life saver is you aren't understanding things in lecture!
Professor McCoy is unclear with her teaching, makes class almost mandatory. The tests are very unclear and not what is covered in class. Class she just glazes over slides. If you can avoid this class. DON'T TAKE IT! Not even in half of the semester.
She isn't confident in any of her answers and that makes me question her reliability. She flies through the slides and isn't very clear during the examples and second guesses herself constantly. Or most of the time she is wrong and starts over.
Does NOT care about anyone! would rather see her students fail! Most people failed her class and its a lecture hall. Never again, never-ever again taking this class with her. Honors students failing! NEVER AGAIN,SHES THE WORST. I should've reported her because so many people studied there butts off and receive bad grades. Dont take the class!
Worst teacher ever. She gets frustrated when asked questions and replies with its thats how I wrote it type answers. Tests do not cover her pointless slides. She cannot convey material clearly. She deletes homework without warning then tells us to redo it. Wish dean would watch her slides to prove the complaints. Does not care about fail rate.
Pinky McCoy often skims over power point slides and when it comes to tests they are confusing. I have spent time going to study sessions and countless hours studying and still barely manage to get a C. She offers extra credit but that only takes you so far. Honestly if you can avoid this class please do. Tuition is expensive as is.
Tough because she words tests hard. I def recommend a personal tutor, try your hardest even if your failing in the beginning, don't drop the class because thats what the chem department want you to do because they try to weed-out students. Stick with it and once you learn her tricky wording you will get better grades. Best of luck, shes hard.
Chemistry is a tough subject although she was better than my previous professor this class is still tough. She does clicker questions for attendance and you get points based on what you answer correctly. Attendance is necessary.
Dr. McCoy's class was very hard and I had to put in an incredible amount of time writing papers, as this is a writing intensive class. Not to mention the absolute necessity of keeping your notebooks up to date and actually performing the labs. Even though biochem is not my best discipline in chem, she helped enough for me to eventually succeed.
Avoid this professor at all cost!!!!! Gives very difficult, "critical thinking" exams yet gives very basic, painful lectures. Unorganized. Unprepared. She has no excitement/passion for this subject or to teach at all. I honestly feel I am being ripped off by taking her class. I've gained nothing from it. Take any other biochem professor!!!
There is in class group work. Do extra credit homework problems. I do not feel that she lectured to the level of the tests. A lot of stuff you need to figure out on your own. Tests are multiple choice and short answer. You have to know topics from learning objectives in GREAT detail. Use textbook and her notes to gather information about topics.
She reads of the power points posted to blackboard. If you need help she's always available. Will give in-class assignments that are actually very helpful, make sure you understand them! Read the chapters and do the practice exams and you can get an A. Extra credit at the end of the semester for 2 points towards final grade!
Chemistry is already a hard class in itself but being that the class is so big the lectures are typically long and boring. Being that the lecture notes are provided anything you do not understand in class you do have the opportunity to go back at the end of class and review to try to get a better understanding. Do the homework and come to class !
Dr. McCoy is very smart, however she does not really explain things that well. For an intro class, she makes learning the content very difficult. Expect to spend more than the usual amount of time learning the concepts on your own. There are 3 exams that are worth 85% of your grade, so if you mess up, it will hurt you a lot.
The material is tough but overall she really knows what you're talking about. If you email her she answers fairly quickly and with a good explanation. She offers lots of study sessions. There's only 4 tests, but they're multiple choice & there's extra credit opportunities on each test.
Professor McCoy is not clear when explaining things from the powerpoint. She seems confused about everything she teaches and goes too fast. Only took her class because she was the only professor teaching the class.
Does not do a good job of explaining and actually teaching during lecture. You will have a lot of homework that will only count for 3% of your grade. A lot of time spent on something that doesn't really help you. I recommend finding a professor who will actually teach you and that you will learn from that class because I did not.
This is actually my second time taking her and she is a good teacher, but she is a lecture teacher and she uses the clicker to make sure students are in class. You will not pass a test unless you study the PowerPoints or go to the help sessions.
McCoy is absolutely terrible at responding to e-mails and is usually no help if you go up to her and class and ask her anything. Her tests are hard, she shows zero interest in helping her students and improving their grades. There is online homework due constantly and there's only a 2-day late extension on each one. Avoid her at all costs.
She understands the material, but the way she relays the material is confusing and inorganic. Honestly, if I were to retake the course knowing what I know now I would only read the book. Don't listen to here, look on Youtube for help: Chemistnate works well personally, GO TO THE OCPNS BUILDING IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING LECTURE.
This class was ok. You must study and make sure you understand the material or you wont get a good grade on the test. I did not find lectures super helpful, just mostly a review of the chapter. Take notes when you do the homework. Extra credit on the tests saved me, if you do the homework and study the chapters you should be good.
Professor McCoy's lectures are too quick for you to pick up any info especially if chem isn't your strong suit. She rarely reviews the content and never really gives clarification when someone asks a question. Homework is all online and takes awhile to complete. Test were difficult and the final was somehow the easiest exam out of them all
She made sure all students had a chance at getting a decent grade. 3 exams & final but the final is optional & can be used to replace your lowest exam grade. Offered test corrections for first 2 exams but have to be present in class when she passed it back to do them. In-class group work counted towards grade. Extra credit offered throughout sem.
Organic Chemistry is difficult, but she really tries to ensure her students understand. You'll be able to earn back points on exams when possible, and you'll have plenty of time to ask questions and get answers. She does a lot of group assignments in class, so you can work things out, discuss, and ask her questions as you work. Great teacher.
You will learn nothing and probably get confused during the lecture class. She goes too fast. I passed her class by attending her help sessions and doing the practice test. She goes over the practice test in the help session and she shows how each problem is done. The cool thing was the actual test was basically the practice test.
She wasnt heard from much regarding class, it was moreso the TA. You have to really really pay attention and put effort in this class, there would be information we needed missing from the lab documents, and if you emailed the TA about it, you wouldnt get the help you truly needed.
I cant actually rate her as a teacher because a T A taught this class. But the Lab was easy if you showed up and did it. But you cannot make up labs so dont miss class.
I cant really rate professor pinky due to the fact that it was a TA Adenrele hes honestly horrible. The study guide he gave had nothing to do with the final exam. He doesnt help with labs. Just be careful with this class
Dr. McCoy is honestly a good person, she just has no business teaching a class that nursing majors have to take. I was a nursing major and this class made me change my major and I still failed by not even a whole point. She will not round your grade up and her lectures do not help with the content on exams.
Didn't have Pinky, I had Devin for lab. He's a new teacher and it shows. Slow and monotoned. Not very helpful when asked questions and seems like he hates his job. Doesn't make labs clear at the beginning, would just suggest reading the directions in the lab book. Can not easily makeup labs, so go to your scheduled day. Strict on dress code
It's definitely a more fast-paced lecture class. You're required to have at least read the material prior to the class lecture, which is to be expected, but if you have other things and fall behind, you will spend a good amount of time outside of class making sense of the notes yourself so that you understand it well enough for the exam/quizzes.
This class feels like you are picking up after yourself at every moment. You are expected to know a lot of things before hand and most of the time it feels like nobody knows what is going on. Just try your best, email and talk to your TA if you want to pass
Exams are 70 percent of the overall grade. Material learned in the course is not on the exams. Very difficult to pass exams, therefore very difficult to pass the class. I would not recommend this professor.
I didn't have Professor McCoy, I had the TA, Areej Malik. She was very helpful and took her time with those who needed more help. The only thing I had an issue within this course was the study guide for the mid-term was nothing like the actual mid-term.
She did not help as much in class. The Exams are way to High they are 85% of your grade. I HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND Pinky McCoy . She goes over the Slides in class way to fast. It's all home work an exams no quizzes . class is mandatory so go.
The Exams are 85% of your grade . If you have to take this class here at ODU don't she goes over the lecture slides way to fast . The class is just all home work and exams. She does not offer retakes on exams or extra credit. 10/10 do not recommend. GOOD LUCK WHITH THIS CLASS DO NOT TAKE IT .
Do not. I repeat do not take anything that has Pinky Mccoy as the teacher. I had a TA for my lab class and it looks like they are teamed up together to make me fail. More like fail in life because this class is a prerequisite. She doesn't put grades in like she is expected to. I literally struggled for my life.
I enjoyed Professor McCoy's class very much. Only 70% of lectures are required, but they are helpful because she explains a lot of chapter problems. However I did find it necessary to study a lot on my own, watch videos, and get help.
people complain about her but as a student who actually went to class and paid attention, she's not bad. her exams are 85% of the grade but are 25 q and all multiple choice. she does allow bonus points on exams and gives extra credit every now and then. the people who fail are the ones who don't show up or do homework. study out of class and u fine
The worst class I've took. Depends on ur TA. However, the whole lab grade is based off ur midterm and final exam which is nothing you do in class it was all math. Tough grading on lab assignments. For a lab this should not have been this difficult.
In this class all Prof did was read off the slides all class. Very long homework assignments. But she did provide study guides for each exam which were much like the real test. It's up to you to study outside of class, or go to her office hours. It's very unlikely that you will learn the information just from attending the lectures.
The lab section is taught by one of many TAs and it seems like your experience is entirely based on your luck with TAs. The TA I had was not very great at teaching us or informing us on what she was going to grade our reports on. I've heard from other people that the other TAs were not so bad, so its really a gamble.
Organic chemistry is a difficult class, no doubt. Make a groupchat, take lecture notes, and utilize the Atkiv homework and you'll be fine. Quick to respond to emails, and gives extra credit opportunity on tests. She also allows groups to complete take-home portions of exams.
Does not teach , would absolutely not take this course again it was awful , chemistry itself should not be as hard as she made it , she just went over slides and read them word for word, the study guides she posts are absolutely nothing like the test .
I have taken chemistry 3 times because of her. Yes, chemistry is not easy but it should not have been as hard as she made it. TEST WHERE NOTHING like what we went over in the lecture. I don't recommend taking her for any subject. I feel like she does not care about her student's success in the class. I found a new chem prof. and passed with a B+.
do not take this course find another prof, an INTRODUCTION chemistry class should not be as hard as she makes it. she reads off powerpoints and the class is not engaging at all. I know you're supposed to study on your free time but it's impossible to when the homework is so long. this course made me almost drop out of college as a whole.
There is one thing I want to say : DONT EVER THINK TO TAKE HER CLASS
Pinky McCoy's class is challenging, but with dedication it can be manageable. Use all available resources, including unstuckstudy, to supplement the fast-paced lectures. Stay on top of the workload, and you may just pull through with a decent grade.
Yeah just don't do it. The worst teacher doesn't know how to teach. Half the class dropped out after.
- Students read textbook chapters before coming to each class then go to an unhelpful summary lecture afterwards. Lectures make no sense without the textbook reading. (2+ hours to complete per assignment) - Homework assignments are 20+ questions with 3-6 parts per question (2 hours per) - May assign lots of homework before exams & work on weekends
do not take McCoy's classes - extremely large homework load, 5 assignments before exam all ranging from 2-3 hours for completion - student teach themselves, textbook must be read before class otherwise lectures are nonsense - boring and overcomplicated lectures - class is hard to manage with a life, expect to pour all time into this class
Mccoy is a very nice lady, she's easy to talk to. But regarding the course, it's very hard. Lots and lots of reading and notes, which are barely talked about in class. In class assignments everyday that are difficult. Homework isn't very often but when it is it's a lot. Her grading for pearson homework assignments doesn't really make sense either.
Professor Pinky McCoy's teaching style is disengaging, and her lectures fail to capture students' attention. The workload is overwhelming and often feels unnecessary, adding stress without enhancing understanding. Despite her knowledge, her approach does little to create a supportive or motivating learning experience.
Professor McCoy's classes are boring and lack any real engagement. The workload is excessive and mostly unnecessary, just adding stress without helping students learn. She doesn't make the material interesting or clear, making it a frustrating and unhelpful experience overall.
Professor McCoy is one of the worst teachers I've had. Her lectures are dry and confusing, and the work is overwhelming and irrelevant. She doesn't know how to teach, and it's clear she doesn't care about her students' success. This class is a complete waste.
Pinky McCoy certainly has a unique approach to teaching—one that doesn't involve much student engagement or clarity. The workload is impressive in its ability to overwhelm students with assignments that appear to serve no real purpose. If you're looking for a challenge, this class will certainly provide one.
If you're a fan of pointless work and uninspiring lectures, this is exactly who you need. The assignments seem carefully designed to keep you busy, but not to actually help you learn. It's a refreshing change to find a class that can make even the simplest topic feel like a chore.
Professor McCoy's lectures are a complete waste of time. They're disorganized, unclear, and don't help students understand the material. The workload is absurdly heavy and serves no real purpose. She doesn't care about student success, only about piling on meaningless assignments.
McCoy's class is a disaster. The lectures are boring and incoherent, and the workload is absurdly excessive for no reason. She doesn't provide any real support, and her teaching methods are almost guaranteed to leave you confused. It's clear she doesn't care about her students' success.
If you want a class that offers no clear teaching and endless busywork, Dr. McCoy's class is for you. Her lectures are vague and unstructured, while the workload is pointless and overwhelming. There's no effort made to help students succeed or even make the material remotely interesting.
Dr. McCoy's method of teaching is about as effective as watching paint dry. Her lectures are vague and aimless, and the assignments are excessive and pointless. She fails to engage with students or explain anything clearly, leaving everyone struggling to keep up with no real guidance.
Professor McCoy is a prime example of how not to teach. Her lectures are confusing and unhelpful, and the workload is an overwhelming mess of pointless tasks. She doesn't engage with students or explain anything clearly. It's hard to understand why anyone would want to take this class.
In Dr. McCoy's class, confusion reigns supreme. Her lectures lack clarity, and the constant stream of pointless assignments is designed to overwhelm you, not educate you. There's no engagement, no clear direction, and no support—just a lot of busywork that does nothing for your understanding.
Chemistry used to be one of my favorite subjects, but Dr. McCoy's class changed that. Her lectures are hard to follow and offer no real insight. The excessive workload feels like punishment, and I can't help but feel that my enthusiasm for chemistry has been completely drained by this class.
Dr. McCoy's class is a complete failure. The workload is excessive and serves no purpose, while her lack of teaching skills only adds to the frustration. She's more focused on her personal image than actually educating, and it's clear she's out of her depth. This class is a waste of time and energy.
Dr. McCoy's class was a turning point for me. I went into it passionate about chemistry, but after struggling through disorganized lectures and endless busywork, I realized I couldn't keep doing this. I'm now looking at switching my major, because this class has completely killed my interest.
After taking Dr. McCoy's class, I've come to the conclusion that I should've been a marketing major. I could market chemistry better than she teaches it. Her lectures are confusing, and the assignments are useless. I'd rather sell the subject than struggle through her class.
Mccoy's teaching wasn't exactly what you would call "teaching". This course is best described as a self taught course. You take mandatory notes from the textbook, do many 2+ hours of homework every week, and your exams are worth 69% of your grade. The only reason I kept up with this class is because I studied 24/7. No social life is possible!
Assignments given almost every class (group work), but will drop some at the end of the semester. Exams were similar to sample exams provided. Homework was average. You do need to teach yourself and know the material before class. Her class isn't terrible if you truly put the time into it every week. Final is optional and won't drop your grade.
Lots of homework for this class, however there were often extra credit points available on the assignments. Tests were similar to the samples she gave, and there were extra credit opportunities on those as well. As long as you read before class, take good notes, pay attention and do the in-class assignments you'll be fine.
I knew this was a flipped style class when she read from the slideshow. Lecture didn't match up with Lab. The class is homework heavy mostly reading the textbook and taking notes. When asking questions about things it wouldn't be a clear answer. There is always a in-class assignment where you can get extra credit, it helped for the exam.
The class is test heavy making them worth 69% of your grade. When showing my lab teacher my test she told me McCoys test are overly hard. The HW's are MINIMUM of 2hrs a week & all required notes must be hand written or she WILL take off points. Her lectures are useless since she reads out of the textbook the entire time. Prepared to teach yourself.
You teach yourself the material as she talks for the first half of the class on the textbook you already read (as it is homework). Then she works on a worksheet with somewhat similar questions as you, she wants you to work in a group and figure out the problems yourself. Group work is useless as everyone is typically on different pages.
You are basically teaching yourself the material. The homework is extremely long for no reason 2 hours or longer. the daily assignments don't help unless your group all understands the material. all the other work feels pointless when test are worth more than half your grade.
yall... take the other chemistry teacher if possible... my friends are still bragging about how good the other chem teacher was and i finished this class two semesters ago
She gives daily DIFFICULT group worksheets each class that are graded on accuracy. When asking questions about the worksheets, she never gives you a straight answer, similar to any other question asked. I succeeded in this class only because I had a very good knowledge base in chemistry. Lectures were not engaging, and homework was tedious.
She literally is the worst proffesor at ODU. I don't know if she just has nothing going on outside of college but she must get a kick out of being uneducated and not teaching. dont know how she still has a job. DO NOT TAKE HER !!! she also gives off vibes that she doesn't like you if your a POC could be in my head but definetely do not take.
Lectures she's reading the entire time off of slides and her in class assignments don't match yours so she's going over problems you won't see, you have in class assignments that are worth grades so make sure to come to class and study super hard because exams are heavy. You also have to buy the textbook to complete the homework. Take someone else
she is the worst grader and the work load is crazy and shes grades stuff that shouldn't be graded. Like how do I get a bad grade on MY NOTES????? tell me how that makes sense??
I'm not even done with this class and I'm leaving a bad review. She reads off a screen, does mock problems that you'll never see, homework takes over 2 hours regularly. The exams are nothing like what she teaches or what's on the homework. I know I'm not good at Chemistry but I'm not horrible at it, but with her teaching I'm now horrible at it.
Guys stay away.. no joke. I thought it couldn't be that bad.. oh it's that bad. homework takes forever and grades your notes. you have to read probably 10 hours of reading within 2 weeks and with having a job.. its bad. honestly stopped attending class (scan and leave) and went to a tutor instead.she also reads off slid. TAKE LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE!
While she might not be incredible, Mccoy is very good at preparing you for the exams if you do all your work. She is very easy to get in touch with and gives lots of extra credit on exams that can really boost your grade. If you need help, you can go to her anytime. Chem is hard, but if you use your resources, you can make it with her.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She doesn't know how to teach. Exams are almost 80% of your grade, and the test questions are nothing like the easy examples she shows in class. She grades handwritten notes and takes points off for missing anything. No study guides, tons of homework, and if you get a 99.99, that's what she enters no rounding.
She is a a very hard prof. She teaches off the slides. She doesn't give extra credit and the EXAM ARE 76% out of your GRADE. I don't recommend you taking her class take a different professor. She goes really fast during her lectures. And you can't see your grades because she has them locked. The exam is on paper by the way. DONT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
2/10 I don't recommend.
Went on a speech about how she was proud that her own daughter failed her class. That should tell you all you need to know.
awful she does not care about her students
No save yourself
I can't even put into words how much this professor doesn't care she grades your notes that she reads off of slides in class but she goes through the slides super fast and she will teach at the speed of light and not care please do yourself a favor and don't take her.
Professor McCoy is pretty clear at the beginning of the course. If you follow along and take pre-lecture notes BEFOREHAND you will succeed! Take notes and engage during lecture, this isn't really a class you can slack in because it is consistent. I never had to attend office hours but she has them and hold a supplemental session too if needed!
Id never ever take her class again. Not a very good teacher all she does is show slides and expect you to know everything on the test. Tests take up around 75% of your grades. If you take this class prepare to teach yourself everything.
This chemistry course was brutal the most difficult class I have ever taken... Even after over 20 hours of studying nonstop I still failed exams. Even with all the other assignments I still struggled. Attending every class did nothing and exams are the biggest portion of the grade. (76%)
Professor McCoy is a good professor and she doesn't know chem. She reads off slides and expects us to understand what she is talking about. WHICH NO ONE UNDERSTOOD. The whole class failed and she was FORCED to curve exams. She made MAJOR mistakes while solving equations. Don't take this class I BEG I attending tutoring RELIGIOUSLY the exams are BAD
How you grade on how I take notes? Not ever taking her class again it was so confusing, I tried and I tried too focus and do homework on time and ask for extra credited which was pointless too even ask. Don't ever take her you'll be teaching yourself.
