Worst teacher in the entire world. Had no idea how to teach the basics. Tests were ridiculous. Absolutely TERRIBLE teacher. Best advice, if you see his name on your schedule get out of that class as soon as possible!

The guy looked like he was trying, but he doesn't have the patience to work with students. I tried going to his office hours and he barely taught me anything. Again, he's got the will to teach, he just kind of patronizes students. After the first exam the average was like a 21%, and he kept saying to us 'am I going slow enough for you?' only to speed up later. It's a shame, seemed like a decent dude.
This man is a brilliant mathematician, but he assumes the students are as brilliant as he is. The exams are impossible, homeworks are pretty tough too
You think this guy's hard? You've never met K. Brownlee.
He's very smart, but does not know how to teach and relate to his students. He can't understand questions very well, and his tests are extremely difficult. Dont take his class if you don't have to.
quizzes are easy and hw is small. But like everyone else said, exams are impossible. He failed 21% of the class last year! Brilliant, but no clue how to teach without a book. But he does have makeup exams and encourages you to go to his office hours. Unless you are also a brilliant mathematician, say cya to piotr
This guy is horrible (had him in Spring 05). Very unclear, vague, unhelpful, at times fails to understand student questions, and often responds in a condescending manner. His exams are unbalanced and very difficult. The mean of the first exam for example, was 27%.
He is a very good teacher and is generally a very nice man. However, if math is not your strong suit do NOT take this class. His tests are extremely hard and they get harder as the semester moves on.
As everyone has noted: brilliant. He takes a rather traditional approach to the subject and sets high standards for himself and his students. You will LEARN in his class if you rise to the occasion and challenge yourself; if that doesn't interest you, don't take his classes.
This is a tough class, but if you thought Calc 3 was going to be easy, you shouldn't even be in college. Tests are hard but not ridiculous; he does a decent job of letting you know what will be on them. Homework and quizzes aren't too bad. If you have a solid background in math and you give a decent effort, you should be OK.
STAY AWAY!!!!! I consider myself a very good math student but he was impossible!! Tests are ridiculously hard and he gives NO partial credit. Very condescending and seems annoyed if you want his help or have a question. If you see him on your schedule, drop the class IMMEDIATELY!!!!
a good teacher no matter what people say You must do work outside of class in order to do well I enjoy math and did well in this class He gives problems to do in the syllabus after each class If you do them you will do fine in the class calc is doing the problems not learning in lecture gives minimal amount of homework which is not enough
He was a terrible professor. He could hardly speak English, and when he did, he was rude as the dickens.
super smart guy - very difficult class, but definitely the best math class i've ever had. i had him for the advanced calculus I and II and everything was really difficult. surprise. he does expect you to be very good at math - wouldn't suggest him if you aren't. if you are though, don't miss him. he's a great guy too, very funny.
One of the best teachers I've ever had, and funny as hell too. I you wanna learn some math I recommend this guy.
I had Hajlasz as a freshman, and I worked my tail off - studied for the first exam for 14 hours, got a 78. He praised my work on the exam, and I was SO proud of myself. He's a challenging professor and expects a LOT of his students. But you will learn and understand, if you do the work. I highly recommend him, one of the best profs I've had.
He puts in hours of his own time to produce brilliant notes for you to download, and his lectures explain difficult concepts in absolutely crystal clarity.
extremely wonderful and funny professor, highly recommend him if you wanna take anything related to calculus ( or analysis)
Very intelligent professor but difficult tests and grading. excellent if you want to learn calculus.
I had him as an undergrad a few years ago. I'm now in grad school (for math) and he was one of my inspirations. He is tough, rigorous, brilliant, writes fantastic notes, and although he may seem intimidating is quite a nice guy. If you really want to have a good foundation in analysis then TAKE HIS CLASSES! It won't be easy though. :)
This was the most laid back class I have ever taken! Attendance wasn't mandatory, there were no tests, and all of the notes he used in lecture were online. He is very good at explaining abstract concepts, but you need to be on your toes. Only take him if you are really interested in learning mathematics.
Hard class, great professor
While other students seem to think the class was difficult, I found it very fair. As long as you go to lectures, do the homework problems, and keep up with the lecture material outside of class it is very easy to do well. He does a good job of teaching overall and is concerned with students' success.
He teaches very quickly, but he is very clear on most of the topics he covers. He has an accent but it isn't an issue in terms of understanding him. I would highly recommend taking him if you don't mind the pace. His tests are very fair and they have some bonus questions.
His notes are presented in an organized fashion. He often arrives a few minutes late to class once you get into the semester. If you do the departmental homework, his exams are cake. I finished both of them in 20 minutes and got 100% or higher (he also has extra credit on his exams). I highly recommend him as a calc 3 professor.
Piotr is a nice guy that really wants you to do well. He put his notes and worked out example problems online before the first exam, which was very helpful. His tests are not very difficult, and he grades fairly (plus, he adds bonus questions). He is a good choice for Calc 3.
Really enjoyed this class. Tries to simplify things so they're not as confusing. If you go to his class and skim through the book, you'll be fine. The quizzes were annoying (other classes do not have quizzes), but the tests were definitely fair and they prepared me for the departmental final.
Don't be intimidated by the name, "Hi-wash" is a great guy. Great sense of humor. Lecture is fast paced but quality. Easy tests with bonus points. Yes LON-CRAPA sucks but oh well. Do the book work so you know what's going on. Quizzes were fair. Told me what I got on the final when I passed him walking down Fifth. STRONGLY recommended
Hajlasz is brilliant and keeps his students engaged through laughter. His accent is very clear and makes his jokes nine times better. As for material, he covers calculus in a comprehensive manner and gives you the tools to do well. I have no need to attend class because of my current math skill level but i go every week because the class is funny.
An entertaining and overall good professor. He is usually clear, sometimes skips steps, confusing students. Very willing to help if you ask.
Seriously is a great professor! His lectures seem long, but he gives examples that are practically the quizzes and exams. Its worth going to lecture and definitely worth having him as a professor. I would take him for calc 2 next semester if I could.
Good lectures, you have to get used to his teaching style but after that he is very helpful. I felt well prepared for my exams. Can create really easy or impossible exams so be careful. Overall, I would recommend him!
this guy is the best! He is a tough one, but you learn a lot from him.
Took him for Integrated Calc 1 (meaning for engineering majors). It is clear that he typically teaches higher level courses. He most definitely knows his stuff, but he expects A LOT out of Calc 1 students. Tests are very hard - averages were always lower than the rest of my Calc 1 friends in other classes. He is funny, however.
He is a very tough teacher when it comes to tests. You need to pay attention during lecture and practice problems outside of class. Some of the problems on the tests take some deep thinking to be able to solve. The class requires a lot of work and the tests are very difficult.
The lectures really help you to understand the material. The optimization and related rates problems are long on the exams so do those first they aren't easy. He really tries to help you and is available outside of office hours to help you understand. By far the best math teacher I have ever had.
Very hard grader and the exams are tough. Do not take him if there is a better option.
Great sense of humor. Uses very clear examples in class that are often used explicitly on the exams. No need to review calc 1 all integrals and derivatives are very basic and fair. Very fair exams. Helpful during office hours. Overall great professor.
Professor Hajlasz is a really funny guy. The material can get dense, but he manages to slip in jokes. His lectures are very organized and he posts condensed lecture notes online. Straightforward and fair exams; as long as you put time into understanding the examples covered in class (usually straight out of the book) you'll be set.
Dr. Hajlasz did a good job of incorporating humor into his teaching that really helped the long lectures go by a little faster than usual. He teaches very quickly so most of the time I missed what he was actually saying because I was so focused on taking notes, but he is extremely organized and puts notes up online. Pay attention and do examples.
Exams throughout the semester not bad. Final was awful. Went to office hours and wasn't helpful at all. If there is a better Calc 3 professor take them.
Piotr likes to seem tough, but his tests and quizzes are pretty fair (though the final was quite hard); a lot of his test questions are taken exactly from the book. His lecture usually follows the book too, so no need to scramble to keep up with his notes in class. Piotr has a certain sass you can't help but respect.
Professor Hajlasz is one of the best math professors I've ever had. If you care about Calculus and are willing to work hard for your grade you will succeed. But it won't be easy
take notes and review them for quizzes and tests. questions may not be verbatim, but they should be extremely close to material covered. lectures were clear, entertaining and informative. i took night class so final was not departmental, which was probably a good thing. material isn't easy, but prof makes it doable. highly recommend his class.
I went to class a total of 4 times last semester. If you're just looking to pass, lecture isn't necessary; just keep on track with the homework. If you want an A, go to class. I heard he was pretty funny, so I'm kinda bummed I missed out on that.
The lectures are engaging and very helpful when it comes to the tests and quizzes. You will be provided with what the quizzes are on so you can better prepare for the quiz. The questions on the exams are similar to the examples discussed in class. If you are willing to put in the effort it is possible to get 100% on the homework, quizzes, and exams
I had the option of taking this course with professors that I've heard are pretty bad or taking the class at night with Hajlasz. I'm so glad I chose to take it with Hajlasz. He made the class enjoyable and is pretty funny. He posts his notes online, and a lot of his quiz and test questions are "very similar" to the notes. Take this professor!
He is a hilarious and awesome professor
Dr Hajlasz is your good choice for cal 3. It's not an easy A, attendance and practice are needed. He did give out his note online so if you miss one or two classes that's ok, but it is still worth going to the lecture since some material is not covered in notes. Do his example questions and sample exams, very helpful for actual exams. fair grader.
I think it's safe to say that Professor Hajlasz is one of the best professors at Pitt. The lectures aren't necessary, but highly recommended since he makes everything really clear. Exams and quizzes were fair. It is clear that Hajlasz is passionate about what he teaches which makes the class that much better.
Professor Hajlasz is definitely one of the best professors at Pitt. Attendance in his class isn't necessary since he puts all the notes online, but I recommend you go because he really elaborates on everything and is a very funny guy! Quizzes often have harder questions than the exams, and the questions on the exams sometimes come from the notes.
Pitor is a very good professor. He teaches a good balance between theory and example problems. This helps me know how to approach problems while knowing why I'm approaching it that way. His lectures are very worth-while and entertaining if you enjoy math. He has a slight accent, which isn't bad because it only makes everything he says funnier.
Professor Hajlasz taught Calculus 3 very effectively. His notes were well-organized and posted online. He provided brilliant and amusing examples of how the concepts of multivariable calculus apply to various situations. Most of all, Hajlasz presented himself as an extremely genuine and approachable person. With hard work, expect A or a B in course
I get lost when he tries to explain the theoretical part of concepts but he does a lot of tough examples that are really helpful. Quizzes are also very helpful in preparing for exams. Exams are very easy if you go over all his examples and follow along with book homework. The final was way too hard though so you need to study your ass off for that
I would recommend Professor Hajlasz to anyone, really funny guy which keep lectures non-boring and helpful. Tests resemble examples in class, quizzes, and textbook, and are easy to prepare for. LON-CAPA is a pain. Announces quizzes ahead of time of recitation. Keeps everything clear and organized, lecture notes online also.
Hajlasz was an awesome professor. At first it took a second to figure out how he teaches, but once you do his lectures are easy to understand. He outlines what will be on each test before you take it so you know which problems to practice and he grades really fairly. On top of that, he is hilarious. Be prepared for hard material and random jokes.
I took Hajlasz for Calc 3, and he was great. The subject material is tough, but he does a good job of explaining it. All of the notes are well organized and posted online. He has a very dry sense of humor and lectures were surprisingly fun.
Piotr is a great professor who makes his lectures on calc 3 very enjoyable to listen to and often is quite humorous. He often puts things into easy-to-understand terms and create a fun lecture environment. His tests are also harder than some other professors so you will be better prepared for the final. Highly recommended.
He is a great teacher and knowledgeable. He is also very nice on the personal side and would care if you have a personal academic problem and tries to offer help. He is defiantly one of those few outstanding professors I have ever met. His nice jokes and way makes the class atmosphere very friendly.
Piotr is the man. He teaches relatively difficult material, but he does his best to try and get you to understand it. Low-key hilarious. Oddly enough, he really cares about how well you do in his class, which is hard to find in a Math professor at any university.
Dr. Hajasz is an exceptional math professor. He may seem to move through material quickly, but there is a method to the madness. He knows which concepts are conceptually difficult and will focus on those concepts more so than trivial concepts. Obviously, this is Calc 3 so don't expect an easy A. All in all, Hajlasz is a fantastic teacher.
He loves math and its amazing. I had high expectations after reading reviews here for him to be funny, but it took him some time to warm up to us. And now I have a full page dedicated to quotes from him.
Hajlasz posts all of his notes on his website so attendance isn't technically necessary but going to the lectures is definitely worth it. He teaches things very well and goes over several examples of each concept. Overall, Hajlasz is an amazing professor he is very smart and very funny. I hope to have him again for his higher level math classes.
Hajlasz knows what he is teaching. He does! That helps him go beyond the face value of the material he covers - he explains why some theorem is deep or useful, or not so! He won't lie to you: If some lemma is stupid, he'll say so, which makes his lectures fun to listen to. Read his notes at home to benefit most from and enjoy his lectures.
Professor Hajlasz was very good at spending more time on what students struggle with and leaving the easier stuff for students to review on their own. His exams are not easy, but he prepares you for the department final. He also is very accessible and wants to see his students succeed.
Dr. Hajlasz is a great professor. If you're on the fence, I'd definitely recommend you give one of his courses a try. He really motivates each topic very well, and he provides his own lectures notes along with results that are hard to find in other books. He's fiercely intelligent, so you'll learn a lot. He also has a great sense of humor.
Professor Hajlasz is the kind of lecturer that never lets you forget the main ideas and motivation behind what you're doing. He does this so well that the subject seems to develop in a totally natural way, which is very rare in any math class. I highly recommend him.
Professor Hajlasz is one of the best professors you will have at Pitt. He is a very effective teacher not to mention the most humorous professor I've ever had. Makes subjects very clear and posts all his notes online so if you miss a day (or a month) you can still know what was covered in class. Only problem is that he does not reply to emails.
Professor Hajlasz is a solid choice. His lectures are engaging and give a strong conceptual understanding (more so than any other teacher Ive had). He also does plenty of example problems during class so you arent surprised on the homework or exams. Aside from his teaching he has a unique sense of humor that makes the math less boring.
He was a really good professor as he made the lectures funny and interesting. He is good at teaching the material and providing enough examples for you to understand it. If you don't, there are many resources out there. I would have liked if he showed how certain methods worked rather than just how they worked. Exams and quizzes can be tricky, study
His lectures are very easy to listen to because he's hilarious and he also covers the material VERY clearly. His tests and quizzes are fair representations of the material he teaches.
Hajlasz is an awesome prof. Super funny, gives great example problems, and understands that you're just trying to pass calc 3. Exams are fair, and may even offer an extra credit question.
Great teacher who explains things thoroughly and well enough to understand. Also very funny and has a good sense of humor :).
Overall a good calc 3 professor. Lectures may be dry at times (but that's calc 3), though he's funny enough to make it bearable. Lecture notes are posted online. Exams are fair, and he posts previous exams online (very helpful). Constantly improving as a teacher.
Very funny teacher for a math class. Does a good job of explaining calculus in understandable terms and has really good online notes that are very similar to what he teaches in class.
Hajlasz is the man. One of the best profs. Knows the material like the back of his hand and is great at explaining/engaging. tells you tips/what you need to know and not know. If you need help, talk to him after class (isn't the best with emails, but very willing to set up a meeting) Very fair midterms. if you are taking Calc 3, you need Hajlasz
Prof. Hajlasz uses a great balance of concepts and examples. Pay attention to his notes, exams will often use the same problems with different numbers. He gets more hilarious as the semester goes on. You have to take him if you're taking calc 3.
Piotr is the man. Really funny guy and makes calc 3 as interesting as possible. Does tons of good examples. Quizzes and tests accurately reflect what is taught in class. Very fair grader. Definitely look at the notes he posts online, sometimes quiz and sometimes exam questions are exactly the same.
I would highly recommend. All of his lecture material was available on his website. You definitely learn better going to class (he's also a funny guy), but it was very useful to have his notes to go back to. His lecture notes were also important because they had extra practice problems on them which showed up in quizzes and exams.
Piotr is an absolute dude.
I took his Intro to Theoretical Math class, and while the content was difficult, his lectures were always super clear. We only had one midterm, a term paper, and a final, so work hard for all three and you should be ok. He gave us a hefty curve on the midterm. Plus he is a funny dude (get ready for an appearance by his friend Jerry).
His lectures can be pretty confusing, but he tends to go easy on the exams and gives a nice curve. He is also a pretty funny guy. I would definitely recommend taking a class by him if possible.
Hajlasz rules. His lectures are great. Instead of a textbook, he wrote a 100 page document of notes that were so much clearer than any math textbook I've read before. Only problem was the term paper wasn't assigned very clearly, but I didn't really ask him about it. I'd suggest asking him for help on that since it's a decent portion of the grade.
Great Professor. I skipped more lectures than I should have, which is probably why I got a B, but the ones I did go to were excellent. He is really great at helping students understand the material in class and his homework assignments reinforced the material learned in class. I do wish he assigned homework at regular intervals though
As someone else said, Piotr is a dude. Likes cracking jokes and making random parts of class a little more interesting. Grades fair and always gives the proper preparation for the exams. I had him for calc 3 and as long as you pay attention in class and put in time doing practice problems, you will succeed. Great professor and great guy all around.
Gives vague lecture notes at beginning of the semester. Rewrites his notes extremely fast during lectures but doesn't fully work through examples. Very harsh grader on exams and if you don't do well on the exam you get told rudely that you either didn't study or didn't know how to study even if you did study. Gives most of the work to the TAs.
If there are other options take them! Not a great explainer and is a tough grader. Doesn't fully work through problems on new topics. If you have to take, use the practice exams and textbook problems to study. 0/10 would not recommend.
One of the best math professors. Super funny and nice, but also a great at teaching. Has extremely clear lecture notes. If Hajlasz is teaching it, take it
His lecture notes were a gift from above. Was a slightly fast lecturer, but everything he went over in class was in his notes. Quizzes and exams were straightforward and consistent with his notes (if you can't tell, his notes were REALLY GOOD). Overall would recommend, he was a funny professor who made an effort to connect with his students.
Overall really liked his class. He has an accent but it does not impact lectures. Most of the grade comes from exams and quizzes. He gives lots of examples in class and has a website where you can find all the notes (lots of the test/quiz material comes straight from here). He was really funny and always kept people engaged during lecture.
Funny guy and an absolute genius.
Hajlasz as a guy is super cool and funny. His exams are very straightforward and fair. As a teacher, I think he goes way too fast and doesn't properly explain the material. But this is calc 3- there simply isn't enough time to slow down. Instead, he gives a ton of examples, which are incredibly helpful. Do the work outside class and you'll be fine
You will succeed in his course if you do the work outside of class. Lectures can sometimes feel boring but that's the nature of most of the material. He tries to make the best of this and cracks some good jokes every once in a while. You can also tell that he cares about his students and he will help you succeed.
i would definitely recommend this professor. he was a little intimidating at first, but as the course went on, i felt like he loosened up, and he was so funny. his website was helpful, as he posted practice exams and all of his lecture notes. his midterms were relatively easy, and i always felt super prepared for them.
He provides very detailed notes that can help you study if you didn't catch everything in lecture. The lectures got boring at times but he always chimed in with his funny remarks and drawings. The exams are straightforward and similar to quiz questions and problems in his notes.
His notes are so valuable. Even though his notes are posted online, attending most of his lectures were also important because he's really good at explaining the concepts and geometry behind multivariable calculus (his drawings are spectacular). Pretty chill and hilarious dude.
Professor Hajlasz is the best professor for calc 3. His midterms are harder compared to other sections, but the final is departmental, and he prepares you best for it. His exams are straightforward, and he posts all of his lecture notes on his webpage, so you're able to miss lectures or go back to content you were unclear of. He's also very funny.
Professor Hajlasz (hi-wash) as he tells everyone, is a great professor. The class itself was not the easiest for me, but he is very good at explaining the complex topics within the course. Midterms are definitely tough, but something I learned was to study how the topics work rather than just memorizing problems. It goes a long way.
I have only one advice for you, DO NOT take his class. Avoid at all costs. He is rude and terrorizes his students for no apparent reason, and refuses to answer to emails in an acceptable time. He also grades LON-CAPA, but will refuse to help with the questions. Terrible experience, if I could rate him negatively I would.
Final grade is made up of exams and quizzes and a little of Loncapa which he gives no help. He goes through notes fast in class. It makes it so hard to keep up. He also has a very thick accent so I found it hard to understand him. He has some funny moments, but the overall material of the class is very hard so I just wanted to cry the entire time.
DO NOT LET THESE REVIEWS FOOL YOU. I REPEAT DO NOT LET THESE REVIEWS FOOL YOU. I will admit, Piotr was freaking hilarious and so enjoyable to be around, but absolutely nothing can compensate for his morbid teaching style and simply unfair assessments. AVERAGE FOR 1ST EXAM WAS 36% and I promise this is accurate.
It was very nice that he posted all his lecture notes but make sure you still go to class, its very easy to fall behind. His exams were very similar to his lecture samples while the quizzes were similar to textbook or lecture samples so make sure to study using his lecture notes and assigned extra practice problems from the textbook.
Dr Hajlasz is the only right choice for calc 3. His lectures are very engaging and he makes the material interesting. His practice exams are very similar to the actual exams. Final was extremely hard, but curve is generous enough that it didn't matter. Always looked forward to going to his class
Hajlasz is an absolute goat.
Hilarious and explains things very well. If you go to lecture and pay attention, you will do well in the course. He also has all of his notes posted online in case you miss anything, and his notes typically have extra examples as well. Very good professor, I definitely recommend him for calc 3.
Gives examples in written notes that are very similar to quiz/midterm content
Very engaging lecturer, explains everything clearly. Notes are posted online, with plenty of examples for practice. Fairly challenging course material, but he makes sure you are well prepared.
Class really isn't that hard, it's the departmental final that kinda screwed me over. Quizzes were difficult if you didn't study, but if you review the night before they are lowkey cakes. I really like Piotr and thought he had a great personality. He posts all his notes too which is very nice. Easy to understand in class and gives great examples!!
Smart professor, had a bad TA but professor is good. Midterms are problems from his notes that he posts so make sure to review those. Final is departmental so just try ur best and there will be a curve
Hajlasz is a fair grader and he is generous with partial credit. His lecture notes which he provides are an incredible study tool and helped me prepare for all the big tests. He doesn't cover applications as much in lecture but your TA will. Attendance isn't required but you will be very lost if you skip. The class is hard but he prepares you well.
Class covered a lot of what you would expect. Dr. Hajlasz spent a good amount of time on the difficult material and went quickly through the easier material. The tests were fair. We were given unlimited time and he told us beforehand what types of questions would be on the exam i.e. theorem statements, examples from his notes, or homework problems.
Goat professor. Super funny and his drawings are amazing. Tests were pretty easy and very similar to the practice tests he provides. Lenient grader who doesn't really care if you mess up some stupid computation as long as you set the question up right/understand the underlying concept. Can't spell the word "boundary" for the life of him.
Solid teacher, funny but can be prickly at times. Show up to class and study hard, you'll do fine. Lectures were helpful but online notes weren't really for me. Intuitive/conceptual grasp of material is important.
Great professor. He's very funny and gives amazing lectures with good mix of theory so you understand concepts and examples so you know how to do problems. Great drawings (funny ones too) to help you visualize, which is one of the hardest parts of calc 3. Lectures follow his super helpful online notes which makes them very organized and structured.
Funny guy. He gives TONS of partial credit so if you're on the right track but screw up arithmatic, you'll still get credit. Midterm questions are mainly pulled from his notes and prepares you well for the final. Quizzes can be tough but as long as you study the problems in the notes you'll do fine. Do as many practice problems as possible.
Absolutely amazing professor. Quiz and exam problems are taken almost directly from notes. All of his notes are posted online by him, so you can look back any time and use his in class examples to prepare (which will most likely be exam or quiz questions too). Hilarious, amazing professor. Hard subject for sure, but great option for a professor
