Dont know why she was so hyped.. not that great, deff dont take her if chems not your subject!
very good teacher. Also looks good in that white lab coat.
very good teacher. she's also nice, but very strict. hard grader, but very fair. you'll learn chem.
If u have to take organic chemistry, TAKE HER CLASS!! She is very kind and helpful. Her exams are not hard if u put some effort.
Not easy but fair. You will learn the chem.
Professor Swaminathan is very helpful. If you show her that your are working hard she will help you even more. The first and the last test wont be dropped. If you do questions from the book, your guarantied to get an A. I love her. she so great. I'm not scared of chemistry any more.I definitely recommend her.
Professor is very clear about what you need to know. If you do the labs and pay attention during lecture, you will do fine. She is VERY helpful and fair with her grading. I was nervous about taking Chemistry but now I truly like it. I credit the Professor for that!
Very nice and approchable professor. Knows what she is teaching. Very clear in whatr you should know. Will offer help when you need it and will explain things if you ask her. Grading is fair and will give some EC assigments to supplement. I hated Chemistry before I took her, now I kind of like it.
The BEST. She knows everything. I was so scared that i was going to get low, and i emailed her and she told me to trust myself and other stuff. YOU HAVE TO STUDY EVERYDAY. And also, read the book. I suggest to print powerpoints before class so you can follow and scratch off sections in the chapter that she wont include. She's not boring. And she's really fun. I believe everyone in my class love her. Will take her again.
I took chemistry 111 and 112 with professor Swaminathan. She is a wonderful teacher. She makes chemistry interesting and fun. She has a great personality and likes to interact with students. If you ever need any help speak to her, she doesn't bite. Her class is not an easy A, but if you study, and put effort you will A's the class.
I love Swamy! She is fantastic. Took Chm 111/2 with her and I have to say I'm glad I did. I had to drop my previous 111 class b/c the professor was aweful. She wants you to do well. Tests are straight from lectures. She will tell you what to study and provides guides also. Not really an easy A, but it's possible. Book not required, but helps.
She is a good teacher who understands chemistry pretty well and does her best to make sure you do too. The labs aren't hard and she helps you if you ask. There is almost always a pre lab quiz but it's easy points if you read the background and do the pre lab questions. Test's are not hard but it's chem and you shouldn't expect not needing to study.
Dr. Swaminathan is the best teacher I've had at NVCC (this is my 10th class). She makes you work hard but you enjoy it and learn some chem.
She is okay. She works hard to help you and is very flexible. However, she gives you too much things that are not really helpful. She gives you science research projct and gives chapter online quiz. That means you have to buy connect quiz. If you have a lot of time and want to major in chm, take her.
Prof. Swaminathan is a great teacher. She make Chem interesting and fun. She is hard but her personality make the class ejoyable. The whole class seem to like her. Take her if you can.
Dr. Swaminathan cares about her students. There are online quizzes which get you to study and prepare for the tests. She covers all the material during lecture and provides her PowerPoints at the beginning of the semester, the book helps. If you studied throughout the semester the cumulative final should be relatively easy. Wonderful A+ professor.
Swaminathan is one of the nicest professors at NOVA, but she is not an easy A, nor is she a pushover. Don't skip any of the classes or labs and you'll do fine. No worries about unfairness with her.
Chemistry is very hard but she knows how to make you buckle down and study to earn the grade you will receive. Definatly the best chemistry teacher at nova, i almost failed my first chem 111 class and had to withdraw but when i took swaminathans class i felt much better and not as confused. Listen and you will make it out with a B or higher.
she is a nice woman, but makes this class and labs harder than it should be. She will try to answer your question but will not answer it. She says to go home and study but its more like go home and teach yourselves. Textbook is a must.
Dr. Swaminathan did a great job teaching chem. I had her for 111 and 112. She knows the material and she enjoys teaching it to you but you need to show that you're trying. Her class is not easy.
Very good prof. She cares about her students, but you do need to study to do well.
Nice person and is okay at teaching. She'll help you with extra credit and help you boost your grade, but she is very difficult to learn from. Everything is just memorized. If you are good at memorizing you'll do fine in her class. Otherwise I would suggest another professor
Just attend every class and pay attention and you will do okay. She's very nice and helpful so don't be afraid to ask for help. Chemistry isn't exactly a fun subject but I enjoyed this class.
Very good instructor. Always ready to help. Class is never boring.
I really enjoyed this class.Dr. Swaminathan's class is tough but enjoyable. She is always willinging to give extra help if needed.
i failed chemistry in high school and got a 1 on the AP Chem exam, but this professor has been so good at explaining everything that i finally like chemistry for the first time in my life. she breaks it down well and as long as you pay attention, take notes, ask questions, and practice you'll do well. i never read the textbook but have a 100%
EASY grading. Online quiz (easy), presentation and a research OUTLINE (easy). Good at explaining. Took chem in high and this is the second time, I aced all test. She curves them as well. She hates people who comes late so she gives extra credit to those who show up on time. I rarely use textbook, just go to youtube and learn. :
no extra credits but she will curve tests. amazing professor though - one of the best at NOVA! if chemistry is not your thing you should definitely take her - she may be strict but she truly cares about her students understanding the subject. and she explains them with great clarity and interest - she'll make the subject a little less painful
Such an amazing professor! She's nice, helpful, and very good at explaining material. I never liked chemistry before, but because of her, it was my favorite class this semester! Her tests are fair and as long as you pay attention in class, you'll do well. Not her fault, but classes are long and full of info, so try not to miss class! TAKE HER CLASS
She is there to help. 4 exams and one final which all worth the same. exams are right off of lecture and sample problems. labs are easy. final was tough. you have to show her you are working cuz this course needs work. She knows a lot but you have to ask. incredibly available through out the semester.
She's the best! You're going to have to put in work whether you like it or not, but she makes it so painless. Study the sample problems in the book before exams, and the exams will be a breeze. Offered a few opportunities for extra credit as well. I got an A.
Take it if you are out of options
Great teacher. Helps you as much as you need. Explains things clearly. pretty cute. What more could you ask for from a basic course?
Professor Swaminathan allows students to try their best in self studying but at the same time allows for you to grow with easy labs and quizzes. Her tests are not super tough but it is easy to make a mistake. I'm very happy I took her this semester, and would gladly take her again for HCHM 112
Easy grading, test are easy just read back problems .Not proffesional in chemistry.
Great class, hard subject so you do have to work for an A by practicing problems at home. She's available in her office so do go to her if you need to. Honors requirement is just a group research project, not hard at all but very time consuming. Hates when you're late. Tests are from lecture notes so make sure you come to class.
Took her 112 class, Gives more extra credits to pass but the teaching is horrible. She memorize everything dont answer if questions are asked. Not real CHEMIST just reads from power points. Terrible teacher
Her grading system is tough. Her tests are out of 36 points and then she multiply it with 3.6 to make test out of 130 points. If you even have one question wrong then it will fall your grade from an A to a B and may be even to a C. Additionally, She also doesn't offer any extra credit to raise your grade. Class is tough, but she makes it even hard
Her class was very interesting. I really found her teaching style to match mine. She writes on the board and uses powerpoints. She made our class feel very close to each other. Some say her voice is soothing (take caution for those who sleep in class). I really respect this teacher and I find that I can talk to her about anything. I would suggest!!
The course is not easy, but if you keep up with the work, you'll do just fine. Swaminathan is knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry so she takes her time with her lectures to make sure every student understands the concepts. If you study, keep up with the assignments, and show up to class, you'll be fine. If you don't, don't complain:)
She was my favorite professor this semester. Chemistry made so much sense with her a s a professor. She gives 4 tests and a final, and some homework. If you want to learn chemistry and get an A she is for you. On the other hand you need to have time to study for her class ,as it is a lot of info.
She is always ready to help. Take her class.
You need to memorize many details and formulas to use. I had her for CHM 111 and it was fine. DO hw, study for tests and you will be fine. I'm not a good student and I still was able to get a C. You have to do well on labs, which aren't that hard and count as a large chunk of your grade, and your grade will be fine. As a professor she's fine.
I had her for 112H and 111, she is a great but wasn't versed enough in 112H to teach it without getting confused by our questions. We lost 3 weeks to snow Spring 2016. Otherwise she is a great prof, clear explanations, grading criteria, plan, notes/lec is from the power point, grades fairly, cares, uses bb frequently. Sadly uses $200 chem lab
Honestly it was a 101 class. She was horrible. She mad every single little thing soooo freaks hard!!!!!
This class will require a lot of work. Besides in-class and homework assignments, you'll need to do practice problems to really understand the material. Luckily the teacher is good at explaining, answers questions, and is more than willing to help outside of class time. You really need to learn the material, but if you do, you'll do well.
This class was the worse I have ever taken. Do not take her, she is so rude and not a good teacher. She would just assume that you know something and won't teach it on class The 4.3 grade she has is a lie.
Honestly, she's amazing. She gives a TON of work, and the material isn't easy, but it's all designed to make sure you really "get" the material. She thinks of ways and goes out of her way to make things as easy as possible without lowering her standards (extra worksheets with practice problems, emails about what to focus on, study tips). She cares.
I should have dropped out with them. I highly do not recommend this teacher especially if you are a first year student. she is just not a good professor. NO CHEMISTRY background just memorize things
Not taking her again... I passed Chem 111 with a B but got a D in this class !! she expected we knew the material and would skip some parts of the lecture and tell us to do it t home alone . like if I knew what this was I would've done it at home and would not be here!!!! On top of that she was 30 min late for the final. Only gave 2 pts for EC
It was an easy class. She is nice, explains the material well and I hardly studied for the exam but the exam was easy. An easy A class will take her in the future if possible
Her class was extremely difficult. She skips parts of a lecture expecting you to know information. You are bombarded with new information throughout the course without any room for review. Her exams are extremely difficult. I studied throughout the course and could not get an A in a single one of her exams. If you care about your GPA, do not take!
This teacher is rude aND non chalant she's just there for her paycheck and to meet new people, she rushes through the lectures and isn't very good at teaching she expects you to know everything and learn it on your own, if this was the case don't go to class and just learn of the textbook and youtube
If you dont like chemistry, please dont take her. Shes expects you to know the matierals and skips through sections of chapters. Her tests are extremely difficult, no matter how much you study. Her labs are confusing. Shes demanding and expects you know everything right away. Shes an intelligent woman, just doesnt know how to teach.
Her learning style did not fit me. She skips through important stuff and goes through lectures way too fast. Dont get? She wont go back to it. Do not recommend.
I took her chm 111 class this fall semester she was great at explaining tbh. I wish if could take her 112 class but its full. Professor, if you are reading this comments I have to say you are just amazing.
The professor is harsh and sometimes unintentionally mean. But knowledgeable and explains the material very well. Her lectures are heavy and she sometimes expects you to know things you don't but she answers questions in detail so just ask if you don't understand something. Study well and put in the effort, its an easy A.
Professor Swaminathan is really a great professor. I took her class for chm 111 and 112. She explain everything in class so it wont be hard when you study it. Only few extra credits. She is so passionate about chemistry and willing to help you in class or after class. She is so funny as the same time so you wont sleep in her class.
Dr. Swaminathan is an excellent professor! Lectures are very engaging and covers everything with amazing depth. Her course is structured so that the material is well understood by students with homework and practice questions which are very doable. Lowest test grade dropped. Would recommend her to anyone.
This is a respected prof. who got her finished her doctorate at Oxford. Her accent is easy to understand. What she actually she says when she teaches is NOT. She makes 0, and I had to learn through reading. Homework, there is none. You'll have to buy 2 online textbooks for $90 each. She isn't too flexible and doesn't connect with students readily:(
Prof. Swaminathan is an amazing Professor! She truly wants to see all her students succeed. Take her you wont regret!!
She has all the ideal qualities of teaching professional. She has a good sense of humor, great work ethics, and expert knowledge on the area of her subject. The only thing I found challenging to work with was her expectations. The other thing I found frustrating was Sapling (expensive, inconvienient). She was very helpful during COVID-19
She was very helpful in class and also during COVID. People who complain that she gives lots of work mostly procrastinate. Her lectures are amazing and she makes you practice. Her labs are not bad. You need to buy SAPLING access codes for $90 (both for labs and lecture). if you slack off, you will be behind. I actually enjoyed chem :)
A great professor, easy to understand.
The amount of work she gives is crazy and she expects you to already know everything. Looking at the assignments she assigned makes me nauseous. She goes too fast in class and expects you to memorize every little detail. Don't take her.
i dont know why her rating is a 4.1/5 because she is the worse professor I have ever had.I never expect a professor to threaten kids, saying dont mess with me when she clearly doesnt know how to teach and stay organized. She assigned the class hw and says its a completion grade, yet takes points out. She grades unfairly & her voice is annoying
Most of these ratings say her lectures are amazing, it is not. She expects us to know everything and she is very boring. She does NOT tell us when sapling labs are due and expects you to do them. She is unclear with how she wants homework to be done! If it is not done her way, she will take points out.
RUN. do not take her!!! I rather repeat elementary school again than take her
I'm an A and B student, and my mental health and grades have never been so affected by a class until I started this one. She doesn't answer questions you ask in class, expects you to know what she already knows, is super snide and guilt-trippy, and overall cannot teach. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE GOOD REVIEWS.
Way too much homework. Fast paced class, too strict about student collaboration over homework, it's too time consuming to learn every specific problem on our own when we have other classes to study for in such a small period of time. Take this class if you have good memory.
she makes concepts extremely more complicated to understand than they actually are, and her labs consist of too many sources to go back and forth between. she will get mad if no one answers in class and make snide comments. there are way too many assignments to do; it's as if this is the only class you're taking, which is stupid.
Yes, lectures are heavy and she does assign a good amount of work (TIME MANAGEMENT very important) but everything benefits you for the exams. The structure of her class forced me to do well and I learned a lot. She's very approachable and makes herself available if you need help. Chem isn't my strongest science but I still did well in this class.
She is very knowledgeable, but not very good at teaching. Chm is hard and not having a very good professor makes it even harder. Most of her labs are the worst. If you work extra-extra hard you will get a good grade.
Chem is hard. I expected it to be difficult and it was. Dr. S made it easier by keeping it interesting and being there when I needed help. Some of the students in the class complained about the work; did they not realize that this is a college chem class for Science majors. Dr. S was not easy, but we learned the material. And she was always fair.
She def knows what she's talking about so some chapters are ran through but she is super sweet and willing to help if you put the work in! The lectures can be a bit boring sometimes but the labs are always super fun! She's always willing to go over anything you don't understand in class just dont be afraid to ask questions!!
The three things you need to succeed in her class are good time management skills, study habits, and willingness to ask for help if your lost in the subject matter. She is really nice, helpful, and accessible and does a rather good job at teaching a subject that many students find quite difficult. Lowest grades in each grading category are dropped.
Tbh I failed CHM classes 3times in high school so I have to take this course now at NOVA. Im glad that I took her and finished with an A. Shes super helpful, available when you need help. Make sure to do all the labs and hw bc the test is base on that.
Goes way too fast, vaguely explains things, and as others said is very smug, condescending, and expects you to know everything she writes out on the board. I dont get all the positive ratings for her at all.
I have chosen this class because I need it for credit but I also have chosen this class because it was the only one with a good rate at the moment and oh man I wish I can drop this class. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE GOOD RATES. Prof expects you to know the material already. The lecture is very heavy.
Swaminathan is by far one of my faves at NOVA. I took CHM 101 (Spring 2022 semester), the lectures she gave were great, she cared if you learned the material and tried to help you as much as she could. You will pass the class as long as you pay attention and COMPLETE the homework (helps you pass the exams). She also drops your lowest exam grade.
Professor S is knowledgeable on the subject and wants every student to succeed. This class was a challenge, but doable. You will do great in her class if you're willing to put in the work - coming from a non-stem major. Most of the people that left bad reviews were probably the ones that expected an easy class without putting in any effort.
Prof. Swaminathan is a GREAT teacher, an easy grader, and helps students to get good grades. Do not miss classes, labs, and study hard. Students who gave her bad ratings did NOT read her Powerpoint slides, textbook, and did NOT do homework. Her exams are all NOT hard: MC and problems are from assignments and important sentences of the chapters.
Do not take!
Professor Swaminathan has been one of my favorite professors at NOVA! She really cares about your success and really wants you to understand the material critically not just test-wise. I signed up for her CHM 111 I was nervous about chemistry, but she made it my favorite subject!
I think professor Swaminathan was probably the best science professor I have ever had. Her class was fun and her lectures are clear to understand. There are a lot of assignments so at the end exam is really not worth a lot about 14%. She drops the worst exam, lab and quiz. Her homework is a lot harder than exam, for exam just do class examples.
Best chemistry professor at Nvcc by far
She is a good natured professor but she goes over things pretty fast in the lectures and leaves it up to you to understand the material, well that defeats the purpose of coming to class, you are paying for the class for you to learn, not teach yourself. There are a lot of assignments overall so do them in a timely manner. Study for the tests.
Best chem professor out there. I got a C in high school chem so I was scared coming into this class but Professor Swaminathan did a great job explaining every concept. All of her lectures and homeworks are so well made that the only way to fail is to not do the hw/go to class. 4 exams, lowest dropped + final cumulative exam. 11/10 would take again.
I cannot reccomend her enough. She's an amazing teacher who genuenly cares. Her class is hard and many hours long, but you actually learn and it's worth it. She can be tough, but for the best. She genuenly wants her students to succeed and helps during office hours and such. Even if you don't know where you're struggling, ask her!
Very lecture-heavy, with an expectation that you already know the material and can memorize a lot in a short time. She acts like this is your only class and occasionally makes snarky remarks but genuinely cares about her students. There's a lot of work, but it's to make sure you understand. I love science, but taking her class killed that passion.
She is a nice Professor, but her exams are tough. She expects you to know everything, and she also reviews the materials very quickly. She is genuine but me and some of my classmates did not understand much. Overall I liked her but would not take her again.
Prof. Swaminathan's CHM111 is a challenging but worthwhile course. Lectures move quickly, so stay engaged and use resources like the textbook and unstuck AI for study prep. With effort, you can succeed in this rewarding class.
Unless you already have knowledge in chemistry, DO NOT TAKE IT. she is overall nice and genuine, but when it comes to work, i struggled.
She's very smart and genuine , but her tests are so hard. The average on every test was 60/140... which I think says enough. If you aren't already amazing at chemistry don't take this class for your OWN sake. At least half the class dropped it by the W date.
This class is not easy. You have to put in the work to succeed. Thankfully, Dr. Swaminathan is very accommodating to students and really helps break things down during her office hours. If I had to take this class over again, I would start going to her office hours earlier in the semester. She grades fairly, so the grade you get is what you earned.
I cannot recommend Professor Swaminathan enough---she is passionate about teaching, she provides excellent explanations, and she makes herself available---but as competent as she is, this course is innately difficult, and it will demand that you put in the hours outside of class. Lectures are long and content-heavy, yet comprehensive and crucial.
Her class was hard. But shes extremely kind, will explain everything if you ask directly during office hours. Lots of lectures, and labs are easy. study a lot so you don't fall behind. Take notes in her class too. extremely organized. lectures posted on canvas, graded assignments are returned within a week. Highly recommend this prof!
This course will force you to learn how to study if you haven't done so already. My advice is to both drill the e-text questions & re-do the homeworks. That said, Dr. Swaminathan is one of the kindest professors I have had at NOVA. She took a genuine interest in my academic growth despite me never e-mailing her or showing up to her office hours.
