PJ expects you to do a lot of work, and she's busy a lot. BUT she's a great lecturer, very interesting, and doesn't ask for anything unfair. I really loved this course, even though I had to do more work than I like to do to do well.

I heard bad things about her before the class, but I absolutely adore her class. It was the only lecture worth going to since I got here. Her lectures make it so incredibly easy to take notes. To do well, two words: Review Sheet (everything on the exam is on the review sheet).

PJ was overly concerned with trivial details - she yelled at people for being a few SECONDS late to class and at people who smiled during a lecture she deemed serious. Exams also pissed me off - I kept losing points, because I could never remember her exact wording. I wish I'd been warned about her.

Very good, engaging teacher with a great sense of humor. She's a tad bit strict, but a good person about it--she outlines what she wants (no cell phones, etc.), and if you mess up after that, it's your own damn fault. Can be a little difficult, but just go to lecture and you should be fine.

She's ok, def. not even close to the best. She seems to know what she'd talking about, but gets easily distracted, and is in fact also distracting herself (pauses every few minutes to crack an extremely lame joke which she stretches for like 3 minutes with the GSIs). Lectures seem a lot longer than they are, though. Uses every last second.

PJ should invest in a laptop to make some Power Point slides, to structure her lecture. Free-lecturing is for professors who know how to do it. PJ doesn't. The class isn't so hard as long as you study the books. Study guides are about as long as the textbook, which doesn't help much, so don't rely on them. Do the readings before lecture instead.

WRITE DOWN /EVERYTHING/ SHE SAYS IN LECTURE. You also have to do the readings to fill the study guide in. She's very correct when she says "if you know everything on the study guide, youll get an A", but the study guides are huge. Helps ALOT if you have a backing in sociology theory. Despite negative comments posted on RMP, I figured Criminology would help prepare me for Law School. However, it seemed like there was more of a focus on feminism/gender instead, which could be seen in the 90% women (incl. me) lectures. I'm not sure what all the complaints are about. PJ gives people tips on how to study in class to prep them for a) other harder courses, and b) the second exam (which is killer). Professor McGann was a fine prof, nothing special especially with the class being online. I don't think she deserves all the hate she got, but at the same time, I wouldn't go above and beyond praising her. Readings are helpful so don't leave them to the last minute before tests. The GSIs probably make or break the class but I got lucky & liked mine

Honestly, the majority of the students, including myself, had no idea what we were supposed to be learning or studying for tests. If you dont read you wont pass. The lectures are incredibly vague and confusing. I emailed to ask when the study guide would be out and they responded with, this class is the least of my concerns I have other classes

Lectures are easy to understand, straightforward forward, interesting and made into mini segments on each topic which makes it way easier to pay attention. Must show up bc participation is 30%, but the discussions are fun. As long as you watch the lectures, you'll know every question on the exam. Didnt even do the readings and got a B plus.

I loved PJ's class! The lectures are interesting and hold your attention. All you have to do in order to get a good grade on the exams is study. I would re-read the readings and make flashcards of all the notes. After a day of studying and committing the flashcards to memory, the exams were easy. She is incredibly straightforward with the content.

I don't think I have learned a single thing in lecture since week 2, and I have only missed 2 or 3 classed! Every lecture is confusing, disorganized, and leaves me at a total loss for what I am supposed to be learning. Thought this class would be interesting, probably would be if we discussed actual content.

PJ is full of energy and passion and I could always tell how much she loved to lecture and interact with students. I have never been so engaged in the material of a course that had the potential to be complex and heavy. She is amazing and the only people who don't enjoy her courses are people who have sticks up their butt and hate to laugh.

While a lot of the reading is very dense, PJ does an amazing job fleshing out the material in a much more comprehensible way. SOC465 was fun and just challenging enough to really make you feel like you're learning. If you like a little fun with your lectures and some cheesy jokes, you'll love PJ. Highly recommended.

This class was very enjoyable albeit very lecture and reading heavy! PJ is super chill and lectures are formatted so note taking is super easy but if you don't pay attention then you will get lost very easily. However if you keep up with the readings (which there are a lot of) then the lectures are so much easier to follow through.

Actually the worst professor I've had at the University of Michigan, lectures the entire time and doesn't explain what is on the slides so slides make zero sense. If you're considering taking soc295, don't.

Professor McGann never seemed prepared for class and often hadn't posted required readings before class, leaving students clueless during lecture. She didn't explain abstract subjects well and expected students to remember every bit of lecture, including her tangents, for our difficulty worded exams. I ended up having to elect this course Pass/Fail

The best professor I have ever had. I will say, that the exams are hard. The wording can be confusing if you tend to look at questions word for word and are an overthinker. Pj/ theGSI are easy to get in touch with as they allow you to text them. So you can always ask questions and set up OH. Highly recommend if you are interested in this topic.

Very unsubstantial lectures. Selectively picked information from the textbooks to share in class and left out more important details. Didn't foster deeper thinking. I have learned much of the same information in many classes in much more depth. It was easy because it was so surface level I guess. She was soooo boring, talked superrrr slow.

PJ is the type of professor that you either love or hate but I had a really good experience. This was my very first sociology class but I did well because she explained the concepts very clearly. The class is only graded on 2 papers, 2 exams, and section participation. She encourages class participation and is receptive to questions.

You'll either love this prof or hate them. Lectures were extremely disorganized and treated as comedy shows instead of actually teaching the content. The “fair” exams constantly had information that wasn't covered in lecture, so I stopped going. The content maps to study for exams are a joke. If you do the readings and study, it's a pretty easy A.

So, I am absolutely done with all the negative feedback of PJ and their classes. I truly believe the people complaining are not doing the readings nor studying properly, and/or expect PJ to give them basically a cheat sheet study guide to exams. PJ was a pretty good professor. I do not think their content maps were for everyone but they worked well for me. You do not have to really do the readings if you have previous criminal justice knowledge, and the lectures have a lot of fluff. You should definitely take the class, but just be prepared for exams that test retention, not memorization.

Professor's lectures are......confusing, and you will get the most bang out of your buck if you take the time and read the required texts. The content in itself is very interesting and you will learn a lot, but the lectures have a tendency to be heavily politically skewed, and is more centered on opinion than actual theory.
