Dr. Ma is a great professor, but he will make you figure things out on your own. He has a great sense of humor, and will not hesitate to help you out in class and lab.
You will 'really' learn something. He teaches you how to THINK by yourself.
Funny and good prof. He always has time to explain things if you go during office hours and ask questions. Gives test questions in advance. Test questions are very tough though!
Dr. Ma is the Man! He is the epitomy of what a college professor should be, he truly expands our minds! Everything I learned this semester was because of him, highly recommended and worth your time! But you do actualy have to study! Have fun!
He is mean ..... exams are so so hard......
Never had him for a class but he's a great advisor. Anytime I had a question, or needed to speak with him, he was always available. That means alot at QC because trying to find out what classes you need etc can be very difficult, esp with SEYS.
This teacher sucks ! He can not teach-talk in a lively fashion so that you understand him and get curious and interested in the topic to learn about it. Basically I had to study his class by myself using textbook. I wonder how he became chair of bio dept !!!
Really tough course, lots to study for but he offers a lot of help so use it...really hard to understand at first, but you get used to him
excellent teacher. some complain about not being able to understand him but i had no trouble. he really cares about the students and wants everyone to do well. extremely well prepared and very well-organized. if you're willing to put in the work (it's not easy!) dr. ma is your man.
As with any bio class, you teach it to yourself with the book. But if you do go to class you'll see that his lectures leave something to be desired. (besides the langauge barrier) Good Luck!
why do i have a feeling that the only good comment on him was probably written by him????
He teaches a certain chapter in the lecture, spending an incredible amount of time on one aspect of that topic, and would completely ignore the rest of the chapter. He would then expect us to know everything else that he did not teach us by the test. The questions on the test were Very tricky, leaving even the smartest confused.
His exams are HARD!!!!! He is a great advisor but a very very very hard professor
Horrible professor, would have been fired long ago if he didn't have tenure. His tests are impossible and the average was barely over a 50 and he DOESNT CURVE!! If you want to go to med school, dont take this class!!
The tests were not fair. I cannot understand why any professor would on purpose place more than one choice that seems correct even if you studied on a strictly multiple choice exam.I wish that there were more variety on the exams like there was on the mini midterms. Also I wish I could have understood him and the lectures he gave.Study hard to pass
hard class. wants excellence. memorize entire book. straight shooting teacher. get the grade u score. not a bad guy in general but does not waver when it comes to class. available out of class for q's, go see him for any question
Worst professor ever!! Average in the class was a D... His exams are impossible.. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!! He should have been fired years ago but he has tenure. Dont take him if you can avoid!
Prof. is very hard, exams are heavily based on textbook, and questions are extremely detailed. Lectures are virtually useless. Says there is no curve but in the end there is a small one. Work your tail off!
Trust all this comments avoid this professor if you can. all lab instructors in this class have their own requirements and nobody curves because dr.ma said there is no curve. NO CURVE. do not trust those why write that there is a little curve NO NO NO. Bio dep. does not give curves.
Insanely HARD!
im a bio major so this was a required course... my main problem with him was that he doesn't engage his class and is very hard to understand when he speaks... but he was easy to get into contact with after classes...
From a student who cares about other students. Please be advised that this is a course encompassing alot of material and it requires that you take no more than 12 credits inclusive. The exams are 7.5/10 on the difficulty scale and the course load is what is crucial to your grade. Hire a tutor if necessary.Peace.
Dr.Ma is an excellent professor because he really makes you think. When you ask him a question de advises you to come up with the answer. His lectures are very useful because they reflect what will be covered in the tests. It is necessary to study a lot.
Basically, Dr. Ma was not helpful at all becasue he knew his material but could not teach it to others in a clear and easy way. You can tell when he teaches because the attendance level drops dramatically and people will sometimes fall asleep in class. He lkes to drink coke a lot and mumble so make sure you sit up front.
Dr. Ma is a very unclear professor but he knows what he is talking about. He is very unapproachable. Be prepared to make the textbook your best friend. Lectures with him are virtually useless. He drinks alot of coke. He puts alot of jokes in his lectures that don't really help you. Avoid if possible and study on your own.
Ok so he is soft spoken & u def. dont need to goto the lecture cus he doesnt even like using the microphone, but go b/c his test has some prime ex. that can only b answered in lecture. Make sure u do the mock exams and understand them inside out b/c his exams have the same questions as well. Other than that, he wasnt so bad, test wise.
The combination of Ma and Holtzman isn't great. Ma is very soft spoken-I can barely hear him two rows back! He has a magic bottle of coke...His test questions are ridiculously hard--he asks the most obscure questions possible. However, he does know his stuff, and if you allow it, the lectures could be interesting, but it is easy to fall asleep.
Dr. Ma's lectures are really helpful although it takes a bit of time to understand him cuz he has an accent. He explains well & makes funny comments! obviously for this class u have to study A LOT!!! ppl that say he's bad r just mad cuz they didn't do well in the class but he is way better than holtzman!! for this class u really have to study!!!!
Intelligent prof, knows the material well and is willing to help out those who ask for it. Lectures are not very useful, dedicated study of outlines/ppts/textbook is a must to do well. Provides practice exams/questions, which are on exams 30-50% of the time. Exams are very difficult, because they require a broad and thorough knowledge base.
Dr.Ma is a good professor. He knows what his taking about. He explains everything very clear. Study alot and you will be fine. And focus on what he tells you to focus on; and also study the review sheet.
Yes, hes soft-spoken, has an accent; but he does know his stuff. Does make up really hard questions, tricky questions. Tries to make jokes to keep the class alive. Very approachable, he is also an adviser, good listener. Make sure you know your stuff before you ask him for help. don't rely on ppt. just take ur own notes n READ!
Why is it that queens college only has 2 teachers that teach bio 105 and they both are horrible? the material is not that hard its the horrible teaching job that makes it hard. Ma is horrible why doesnt queens college fire him?
His tests are tricky because there are multiple right answers to each question, which he admits to yet refuses to change. you seriously need to devote a lot of time to learning every minute detail in the textbook in order to receive a decent grade. way to sarcastic in an offensive manner.
Much like Prof. Holtzman, Ma does not make much use of himself. His lectures are not very helpful and he does not clarify. He gives incorrect information from time to time, and instead of clarifying tells us to figure it out for ourselves. His tests require an amount of detail that does not even make sense. Avoid if possible.
I slacked off in this class and got a B. If I had put some effort into it I would have definitely received an A, which means it is possible. However, Dr. Ma likes his game of trickery. Study thoroughly and meticulously because questions get deep on his exams. You can't avoid this professor, but you can make it a good experience for yourself!
He is intelligent, but cannot teach whatsoever. Study hard because he will give you a very hard time on the tests.
the worst teacher possibly at queens college he is an egotistical peice of crap ,, he very intelligent but he wants to screw you so if you dnt have dnt take his class he is a tenyear so hes not going anywhere and dnt bother complaining they will do**** they dnt even like him chabora i hear is hard but much better and more fair proffessor
Yes, Dr. Ma has extremely hard test questions. He interjects on the discussion board only when necessary. Truth of the matter is: You learn with him. Even if he doesn't directly place knowledge into your brain, his encouragement to use the textbook is what makes you learn. He doesn't spoon feed you; then you don't learn. He's cool, just very hard.
I took this class this semester, found it tough but not impossible. Just read the textbook and understand the outlines/slides. The key is not to simply memorize, you must understand the context of the information and be able to apply it. 1% of the class scored higher then me on the 2nd test with an 85 so don't expect an easy A
Holy hell. This class is a killer. By the end of this class, half the people from the beginning of the year are gone. It is extremely challenging to learn all the material in the depth that he expects. He seems quite sadistic, but he knows what he's doing. I love biology and knew this class wasn't going to be a breeze.. but his exams are rediculous
Professor is not the best guy to approach. With a legitimate question, he will actively respond. He assumes that you read your stuff and know it. The class itself is very hard. It's not just straight out memorizing, but a lot of application of them. You should dedicate A LOT of time in this class. If you're a biology major, this is be expected.
Prof. Ma knows his stuff, and you learn from him, BUT exams are TRICKY!!! Can't simply memorize the material to get a good grade in class. Intense Class, LOTS OF INFORMATION, Study HARD!!!!!!!!!
horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never take, he is arrogant, completely useless, thinks he knows everything. The tests are not just hard, but impossible. The exams are purposely designed to be tricky.
I find him to be one of the worst professors at QC. Approaching him is like approaching a nasty arrogant and sarcastic old man who forgets where he came from and that he was once a student sitting in the same class at one point. Tests r very difficult and questions r designed to always have an answer to throw ur thinking off.
This professor gets you ready for your upcoming classes in science. If you think he's arrogant, wait until you see Chabora. He cares for those who cares about the subject and take the class seriously. His tests are tricky, but you get lower grade scale to balance it. This class isn't just about memorizing; it's how you can apply them. Study harder.
he is absolutely terrible. he has an accent and i find it very hard to understand him at times. he would rather put up power points of useless pictures and explain what hes going to teach us instead of actually teaching us. reads off the power points. do not take if you want to take a lab class, take a different one.
The class itself is not an easy class. Don't expect it to be easy. I honestly think people who complain here are those who didn't do what they were supposed to as a student. Do the reading. Study on daily basis. Go to lectures. Do STUDY QUESTIONS. (most important. It will refer you back to textbook; more review) You can get A if you do the work.
The reason most of the ratings are so low for this professor is that this class is a pre-med weed out class. The people complaining didn't make the cut or got a poor grade, yet somehow think that they would do better in med school, and it's all Dr. Ma's fault. God help their patients if they ever become doctors, yet can't do well in this course!
Very difficult course, but just as interesting. Study the resources he provides (practice tests, study questions). He's a clever test writer; study hard and take the tests carefully! He's a little cheeky at times, but overall he's a nice, responsive, intellectually engaging person.
Biology at the undergraduate level is usually just about memorization. His tests aren't like that though - they assume memorization and then ask you to critically think through situations based on a huge knowledge pool. Dr. Ma makes biology as thought-based as it can be, but at the same time it makes the class much more difficult. Study hard!
Dr. Ma is amazing! The class is crazy hard but Dr. Ma is brilliant. You grow to appreciate his style and humor. Memorize everything and when you think you're done studying, study more!
This teacher is extemely hard. You must read the textbook thoroughly, and attend class(although not madnitory) to listen to his lectures because he asks questions on tests from his lectures and textbooks. This is a true weed-out class. Need to put a lot of time into this class. Study hard, go to class, and do practice questions
An extremely tricky professor. The class average for all 3 exams were about 10 points below passing. Your head will be bursting trying to study for this class and you still wont do as well as you'd expect. Most people that got good grades in this class had a good prior biology background. Good luck is all I can say.
Personally, I stopped attending lectures after the first midterm, so I can't comment on Dr. Ma's teaching style. I got a B in his class but I feel I would have scored higher if I utilized Blackboard (VERY important if you want to do well on the tests) more often, and kept up with the reading, instead of cramming prior to the test.
The only negative thing i can say is that he is hard, but then again the class is hard anyway. It covers a lot of material, and it's his job to make sure we know our stuff. Some questions will have multiple answers that could all be correct however u have to pick the best one when it comes to the test. in lecture he explains things in plain english
learned a lot. very clear and organized. yes he is hard and tricky, yet if you study you will do well. liked him very much. Since you have no choice beside him for Bio105, enjoy!
One of the hardest professors to love. I honestly thought he did a good job explaining the material in lecture. The problem in that his questions have two answers, and he doesn't really care. He repeats questions from mock exams he puts on blackboard and study questions. I worked hard and got an A-, not much to complain about, but Iworked crazyhard.
Class is very interesting. He expects you to read the book, so read it and understand the concepts. Understanding all the figures in the textbook are the most important, and utilize his review sessions, ask anything you want and he will help you to understand the answer. Put in the effort and this class is very doable.
He will not baby you. He is tough but fair. Focus on slides and outlines, the book is too long and slow to study. Repetition is key- go over all material 3 or more times and you WILL know it. Take advantage of practice tests and his office hours (not Daniel's). Study with a partner and keep up with class- leave it for the night b4 and you're toast.
Read the material, then look over it again. The man gives you chapter outlines and review questions. All of the info obviously isn't in these handouts, they are just there to help! He doesn't have to do it, but he does. Go to class, pay attention, and ask questions. I have stayed after class with him with questions for an hour. He's there to help!!
Pr Ma shouldn't be teaching at the undergraduate level unfortunately he's the only teacher for Bio 105. His tests are extremely tricky but he refuses to admit it. You have to study extremely hard!(in your free time, at the library, in group...) That's the ONLY WAY you will get a decent grade. STUDY HARD! I can't stress it enough!
I had to take this class a 2nd time to pass. his lectures are boring, but very crucial. His exams are very tricky, and although i barely passed the 3 exams,my lab grade gave me a boost. When i took 105 the 2nd time, I studied his lectures, outlines, AND the textbook, studied for days, did very well in lab and I finally passed.
Study the textbook thoroughly. This is your key to getting a decent grade in this class. You can't just know the information, but have to learn the connections between all the information, since his questions require thinking and understanding. Only then will you get a decent grade in this extremely difficult class. You'll be studying 24/7. GL!!!
Dr. Ma has his ups and downs. He excels when it comes to explaining diagrams and figures. He does an extremely poor job in explaining slides with just basic facts and statistics. Just MEMORIZING the material will not help you pass his exams, due to the trick questions Dr. Ma thinks up of. You need to UNDERSTAND the material in order to pass.
mean guy ! Tests are horrible.
if you are trying majoring in biology and about to take this class, i recommend you to READ BEFORE attending the class. DO NOT THINK this class will be fair because it's not. always read your text book and study for the test everyday. it will never work if you cram it.
Wants to become a pre-med student? or work in a medical field? Do not think this class will be fun, i must say this is a filtering class.. if you do not take this class seriously you will fail 100%. always read your text book and always study for your exams weeks before! when i was taking his exams i couldn't even breath!
He knows his stuff. But he seems to be really unclear at times. I don't like him because he didn't postpone the exam after the hurricane he skipped a lecture and he expects us to know it come exam time. All I can say is stay on top of this class and keep up with the work and you'll be fine. Beware of the final!!!
His exams are really hard. The questions are tricky and VERY specific. Each test is on about 200 pages of material and he asks the most detailed questions. If you're going to take this class, don't fall behind because you're just going to flunk out.
First of all, he knows his material inside and out and he's funny.HOWEVER, he is hard u must UNDERSTAND NOT MEMORIZE everything from the textbook. Read and take notes from the textbook. DON"T GO TO LECTURE if u want an A. MAKE SURE U DO WELL IN LAB. I wil not complain because after taking this class it is not as tough as people say.
I had zero background in biology before taking this class, and it's been tough but interesting. Dr. Ma expects you to synthesize huge amounts of reading, and really think through how systems work and interact, understand how similar agents can behave differently in other contexts. Really tough class, but he's a very fair professor.
he is a decent professor. he knows everything that you need to know and he explains things really well if you go up to him and ask questions. this is NOT a easy class. it requires a lot of reading. dont think that you can read the textbook two days before. the best way to study is to do practice problems, watch videos. textbook is your best friend
Difficult but not terrible. The workload is tremendous and it is better to use the textbook than to actually attend the lecture, but there is a curve at the end. This course is designed to knock nearly everyone out, but it doesn't have to be this way. Each test gets significantly harder, with the final being ridiculous.
For the most part, he is tough but fair. Keep up and study alot... if you fall behind, catching up will be hard. His tests have detailed questions and he does throw a few irritating trick questions in there. The grade scale is curved so it really isn't hard to pass, the hard part is getting above a C.
I'm graduating this semester with a 3.8 in Biology. I can say this class was the building block. Thought it was a hard class then, now not so much. Dr. Ma, however, was and IS one of the worst professors and least helpful human beings I've had the displeasure of meeting. He's just not that interested in helping if you don't understand something.
The test are so hard, need to read the chapters over and over. Good luck
worst bio professor ever. he could care less if you dont understand something.
The hardest class I've taken so far in my life but the most interesting and meaningful one as well. He's definitely not easy, but having a teacher like him really makes you appreciate what you are learning even more. The times I asked for help, he always responded very elaborately and enthusiastically.
he is very rude, but dont let him discourage you from taking this class!! study far in advance so you dont cram! STUDY STUDY STUDY!.. Sscience isn't easy no matter who the professor is, so just focus, study and do many multiple choice questions.
Dr. Ma will not baby you. He posts everything you need to know on blackboard and its your job to read the textbook and understand the concepts in your own time. Its not necessary to attend lecture but you do need to devote a LOT of time to this class. His questions are tricky but if you study and understand everything, its not hard to get above a C
ok..he is straight up about what is on the test, but you better know the material inside out. You better know WHY and HOW something works and not just memorize.15-20% of the test questions will have 2 right answers and the only way you will get them right is if you guess right or think how he thinks. i got an A- by knowing everything cold
Dr. Ma makes lecture interesting because he understands what he is teaching and does not just read off his slides. He is great at explaining graphs/diagrams. He wants his students to understand what they are learning not memorize, and it is reflected on his exams. If your are smart and hard working you will get an A.
3words -don't fall behind- If you do, the chances of doing somewhat well in this class are slim.Read each chapter many times(ahead of the lecture),and use thelecture outlines/slides as a quick guide,or rather to just clarify certain details.I got an A in this class;the lab is supposed to bringyour grade up, though this is not true with all sections
Horrible human being, not a people's person at all.. Lectures are a waste of time and if you get a horrible lab teacher like I did, it will be tough to just get a solid C
His sole purpose for being there is to discourage you. He is unpleasant and unhelpful, even to those who try. I ended up doing very well by learning from the textbook and web tutorials. If you are pre-health or a bio major you have no choice but to take his class, but just see him as an obstacle you have to overcome for the grade you deserve.
this guy knows his stuff he's just really not a good person.
Dr. Ma is the most misunderstood professor. He cares about his students. When Weinstein lectured, he sat in for every single one. You don't see Weinstein coming to lectures. He is a brilliant lecturer, and he will stay after class to answer questions. He is tough, but its because he wants to prepare you for Med & Grad school.
He is boring. he does not teach you what is on the test, but expects you to know every single thing written in the book. his tests are confusing and hard, but you have no choice, you have to take him. so good luck and enjoy
He is an amazing lecturer so interesting, going right pace. exams are hard but many questions are from HW, and if you come and ask him showing you have done real work to understand- he'll never leave u empty handed. Dr Ma- all my respect to you. The course is a weeding out one; it IS very hard. Good luck
Word of advice. Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT take Bio105 with Chem113. This is my biggest regret in college. Both classes take an extremely large amount of time, and I could not balance both. This class takes out A LOT of your time from your other classes. Best thing about Bio is you make friends because you're all freaking out.
All studying must be done from the textbook. He mumbles through every slide. Tests are impossible, class averaged 40s-50s, you need to devote your entire semester to this one class in order to do well. The material is dense and Ma is not clear in explaining it, bad combination. Try to get a good lab instructor who can help clarify the material.
Professor Ma might come off as rude, but he is really nice. If you ask him intellectual questions he will be more then willing to explain them to you. This class is really hard and you need to devote alot of time to it, but in the end it will be worth it! i really enjoyed this class and learned alot!
He tells you exactly what you will be tested on for each chapter. He posts review questions and his lecture. He gives detailed answers in person and on the discussion board. He is helpful, and he is a good lecturer. This class bottlenecks students from becoming biology majors or becoming pre-med. It will take up ALL your time. Put in the work.
You have to know how to study for this class. Memorization is NOT enough. You need to have a strong grip of PHYSICS and its basic principles that govern physiology. You also need to not only see the tree (signal transduction) but the forrest (how the ENTIRE organism comes together). I loved this class, even though it killed me. Thank you, Dr. Ma.
WARNING: DO. NOT. FALL. BEHIND. Advice: Read the outline and review PP before going into class. Walk into class (like a boss) knowing what you'll be taught. STAY AHEAD. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. If you devote ~4-5 hrs a day (until the day before your final) strictly studying + reading ahead= A. YOU'RE DONE IF YOU FALL BEHIND. DEADMEAT. I'm warning you.
I have taken this course before at stonybrook, and got a B+. My credits did not transfer over, and I was forced to retake the course. This was the most brutal course, mind you I have taken A&P 1,2 beforehand. You must study nonstop and even then you will barely get a B. e-permit the course if you can!!!
A misunderstood personality. It may take a while to get to know him (and for him to get to know you), but he is an excellent professor that is interested in his students to a degree that is unmatched in QC. Hang out with him even if you don't do well in his course. Is ALWAYS in the Science Bldg and is often ready to chat. One of QC's best
This is a very hard class to take and if you are an incoming freshmen I would suggest against it. The three tenants of succeeding in this class are reading the book before the class, going to class, understanding the concept, and by going to the review sessions. He is very helpful if you spend time with him after class or in the reviews. Good Luck
You will need to put in the work--That is as simple as it gets. It is not PoKay's fault that the material is dense. If you want to go to medical or dental school, this course will certainly help you do well on the MCAT or DAT. That is ONLY if you put in the work. Study everyday and you'll get the grade you want.
BIO1050 with Dr. Ma is hard, but it's not nearly as bad as everyone says it is. Compared to Organic Chemistry, Physics, and upper level science & math classes at QC, this class does not even fall under the same category. That being said, the solution to do well is to just keep up every day; nothing crazy, just make sure not to fall behind :)
Doctor Ma knows his stuff and is a fine professor. There is no point in going to his lectures, all you need to do is read the textbook and do the questions he posts. Other than that, look at his power points so you didnt miss anything while reading the book.
Professor Ma obtains an immense knowledge regarding biology and the sciences however, is prone to turning students off with the ridiculous level of difficulty displayed through the course.
This is definitely one of the hardest science courses in QC and perhaps the hardest general bio course taught in the CUNY system. Pokey is unbelievably knowledgeable and respectable, but he expects too much from the students. I understand he is giving us a taste of med school but some of us aren't in it for med school. Try taking it somewhere else.
Best professor. Always available. He hates people not think thoroughly and only aims at answer. Here has no short cut. How much time you put in is the key. If you are not in bio/pre-med major, take Bio011. If aiming high, then deal with it. Read before class; do h/w; participate on discuss board, visit him once a while. All help.
Difficult class. The material itself is not so difficult, but there is much to study for. I can't blame Dr. Ma for that though. He really cares for his students as long as you show him your efforts. He may be very intimidating at first, but he's such a personable professor once you get to know him. If you expected less work, you're in a wrong class
It's a hard class, no doubt about it. But every exam is based on the textbook so it's ultimately up to you whether you do well or not in the class. Lab is also worth 40% of grade so it's pretty fair. What gets me about him though is he's so rude when you ask him questions after class. He does not give you a clear answer and is just rude
Get ready to work. The textbook is now your bible. Going to lecture is pretty much pointless as Dr. Ma basically just reads things directly out of the textbook. Knowing all the chapters cold + doing and understanding the questions he posts online = good grade. Again this class requires a lot of work but thats what pre-med/science major is like.
Professor Ma really knows his stuff but does not convey it well. Also he makes the tests extremely difficult to separate those who are really dedicated and those who aren't. So if you are really invested in taking bio Professor Ma is a good choice but if your taking bio just to fill a pre req or just for fun do NOT take professor Ma.
Pokay Ma has a serious attitude problem. aside from that, this class is nearly impossible and the questions on the tests are so difficult that the class average is ALWAYS in the 50s. Doing well is possible, but prepare to dedicate every free second to this class. attending the lectures is completely unnecessary.
This guy is the biggest ass on this side of the Mississippi. He literaly curved my lab classes grade all down by 10 Points!!!! He doesn't care and has no heart. If you want to do well read the book and pray.
He subliminally told us how he enjoys failing people. The only reason why he has his position as a the chair is because he's a Wash U in Saint Louis alumni. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, if you value your GPA and proper learning. All he does is read off the slide with a accent, which doesn't even help us enough for the exam.
Much has been said about Dr. Ma. Just like you, I heard the bad reputation and was very scared for Bio 105. The truth of the matter is, doing well is possible. Use the discussion board. Go over the review questions and look at old tests. Go to the tutoring department. Don't ask dumb questions; show him your pathway of thinking and he'll open up. GL
He just not very helpful at all, even downright mean at times.
Definitely not the typical biology class you would expect. However, if your on the pre-med or biology track this course will prepare you for that. If your looking to take this course as graduation requirement, DO NOT take this course. Not only is the exams hard but a lot of students fail. The class average is usually low-mid 50s for all the exams.
Honestly its a hard class.. but if you study, you're golden. Go speak to him in person he's actually an interesting guy! He seems unapproachable but hes pretty cool and he has a super duper good memory. I came to him for a rec as a senior and He remembered an email I wrote to him back when I was a freshman about a lab we did!!!! CRAZY!
MEAN. STAY AWAY FROM HIM.
EASY A! Would take again in a heartbeat!! Do it!
You are not going to get an easier class in QC. HIGHLY recomend for anyone. Great class, will never forget!
Read the entire textbook if you want anything near a decent grade.
This was probably the worst science professor I've ever had! This was class was ridiciously hard, despite the 6 hours of studying I managed to put in EACH night. You have to constantly go over the notes and KNOW every exact detail from EVERY single chapter. For the final, he purposely made a question have no right answers so nobody would get a 100
I'm not convinced he's a nice guy. He think's he's doing everyone a favor by showing them how hard medical school will be, but not all of us are pre-med. He treats his class like his own fiefdom, and no matter what he says, he tries to trick you on exam questions. I think he also is out to prove that bio is just as hard as chem or physics.
Needless to say, this class is more than tough. If you are willing to make this class a priority and study 2-3 hours a night you will do more than fine. Also, regarding the lab portion, the idea is to get a 40/40 in lab and that will make things a whole lot easier for you in the long run. And don't even bother emailing Dr. Ma any stupid questions.
After taking this class I found out what resilience is and what am made of. Some nights of hours of studying where not enough to memorize and understand enough to get easy B'sor A's specially on the lecture tests that compact so much information. I recommend recording lectures and transcribing them after reading 2x each chapter.
He's alright. If you bring him good questions, he will genuinely care and challenge you to think to get the answer for yourself. He does the similar thing with the study questions that he does not provide the answers. Like the half of the final was straight from the study questions... and one question that had no answer was given as a free credit.
do not take him. very sad that queens college do not provide any other option.
Amazing class, would take again 10/10 IGN gr8 b8 m8
Doesn't care about his students. Exams are ridiculously hard, loves to fail people. Stay away from him at all costs. I honestly think he's just sad with his own life, that's why.
Very difficult yet rewarding course. I don't understand why there are so many spiteful reviews. If you're not planning on devoting your leisure time studying for this course, then don't take it. READ the chapters before coming to lecture and do ALL of the study questions he posts up. Take this course seriously and instead of complaining, study.
Honestly, the only advice I could give you is READ, READ, and READ - until you become near sighted. Be prepared to sacrifice every second of your free time to study for his tests. Its possible to do well. The top 6 students with the most work ethic will get the A's. The bottom half will fail. GOOD LUCK! And he cracks the best jokes - Very funny guy
Tests are extremely difficult and usually average in about the forties or fifties. However, if you do well in lab, you should be ok! Just make sure to read your textbook it is literally your bible I promise you. Do the study questions and mock exams, they help a lot
1. He does not speak loud enough to even be mean so idk what some of these raters are talking about. 2. Everything is straightforward. The truth is QC is full of overgrown babies who find it too hard to read.
Study well if you care about the subject and want to be in the field of science and/or medicine. Reading the textbook for comprehension of topics discussed in lecture is essential. Dr. Ma conveys detail with precise and raw clarity, he only expects a student to prepare, learn, and truly apply the concepts learned. Study like its your life.
easy A, take the class. I was going for med school but decided to go to culinary school instead.
It's a tough class, everyone I knew who wanted to go for med school, changed their mind after taking ; but I guess this is how the system works. Exams are difficult, you have to READ THE BOOK, understand every single concept. I was scared to take it but I am doing okay in the course. Just make sure that u give up on ur social for this class.
I was going to go to med school now I'll just be a shoemaker
IN ALL HONESTY I AM ONLY POSTING BECAUSE THE TRUTH NEED TO BE TOLD. If you read the textbook, the least you can possibly get is a B. If you take notes, the least you can get is a B+. I can not stress this enough. People please! Just read 7 pages a day and youre solid. You do not, I repeat you do not have to be smart to ace this class.
Horrible professor. Does not care about his students. Very unfriendly. Very difficult course. The book is your bible.
Prof. Ma is nice and helpful. But in this course you are on your own. Understand the concepts not just read the material!!
Ah yes. It's been a year and I'm still suffering from the grade I got in this class. *war flashbacks* I hope you have no life and screw the textbook every night, because that's the only way you'll be passing. The professor don't give no damn about you and it shows from his awful lectures. The lab is also really off base from class lectures. *sigh*
I never got the chance to rate Ma (taken roughly 5 years ago). Recently got into a medical school, so I'm going to give some feedback. Ma's "BIO105" is probably the most overrated science course in Queens College, most students are freshmen and/or have no science background. Read the textbook, and you'll be fine. Shalamoff plays favorites, stay away
If you're planning to go to Medical School it's perfect for how it will be in terms of speed of the class and knowing heavy amounts of materiel. Ma does an excellent job- You have to know the lecture materiel before classes and then he breaks it down and adds more details in. You need to put extra time & work for this class and ready to learn a lot
Horrible professor. Tests are usually average in about the forties or fifties. Unfortunately QC doesnt provide any other option. Read the book, put extra time and work, youll pass.
I was hoping to go to Med school prior to taking this guy, now I'm hoping to be a Janitor. Good Luck.
His lectures are pointless. He gets EVERYTHING from the textbook. So just make sure you READ the textbook and UNDERSTAND the concepts. He is super tough. His exams are difficult. So get ready to READ. The textbook will become your best friend. For some reason he always has a coke in every lecture.
TEXTBOOK IS THE BIBLE. WHY IS FIRST BIO THE HARDEST AT QC? IT'S NOT THE MATERIAL, IT'S JUST HIM. SAVE YOURSELF. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. HE COULD HAVE MADE THE MATERIAL A LITTLE LESS IMPOSSIBLE. THIS GUY IS SO RIDICULOUS AND CLEARLY HAS NO LIFE. I RECOMMEND THAT YOU GO TAKE A CLASS IN NARNIA RATHER THAN WITH DR. MA AT QC. TESTS ARE WAY TOO HARD!
put it this way. First test class average was an F (45ish%) no Curves retakes no dropping tests. 2nd test was 40% ish same as above just people dropped it started with 240ish kids now for the final its 40ish only 50% is expected to pass
This class is HARD, but here's how I survived. Read over the power points daily, take the practice exams seriously when he posts them esp if he posts the answers. this is super rare and it usually means that he will repeat questions on the exam. do not screw up the opportunity for free points.
First off DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF IT ISNT REQUIRD FOR YOUR MAJOR. Yes this class is hard but it's not impossible. This class made all my other bio classes feel so much easier. If you put in the work by reading the textbook, going to lecture, doing the practice questions, and going to recitation you should do fine. Lab is 40% of your final grade.
Put it this way. This class is absolutely amazing for trashing away the unqualified science/pre-health students. If you are complaining about the averages, you are among the failures and do not deserve to move on. You can't complain about his course and his low averages and expect to move on to a medical school. Waah wehh - jeez, stop complaining!
I agree with the previous comment. This class is made to weed out those people who want to get an easy A and go to medical school. Those who complain do not deserve to go to med school. I loved this class. I read the book and made sure to go over problems. Got an A in this class!
He purposely makes the exams more difficult than they need to be because he believes in weening out those that can and cant. He is merciless and only puts a number to your name. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
He is one of the better bio professors at queens college. The class is not difficult but it is alot of information to memorize. The dissections are somewhat long but they better prepare you for the exams. Would deff recommend if you already have an understanding of biology
He barrages you with information. The information you MUST know as a biologist, or to pass the most basic biology class. Put in the effort, you'll learn a lot and get a good grade. Don't? You may get a bad grade or fail. Which type are you? Look at your grade and find out.
Lab: based on 5 pop quizzes 1 midterm, 1 final. VERY specific exam questions Lecture: 1 mid, 1 final. He goes talks very slow making it boring and harder to pay attention to. Unresponsive to emails, slow grading, uses a lot of jargon. Exam you do 5 short questions he provided in less than a page for each. unsure if he curves grade. THIS WAS ONLINE
A lot of slides each lecture but his exams were fair. This class was on the easier side compared to other biology classes i have taken so far. There is only a midterm and a final each for lab and lecture so be careful when taking the tests!
One of the lighter biology courses, 1 midterm & 1 final for both lec & lab along with a few quizzes. While Dr. Ma is extremely knowledgable, this class seemed really long because his lectures consisted of 100+ slides. Dr. Ma also looks for very specific answers for the exams questions which are given beforehand so there is time to prepare.
lecture not the problem, take 2 weeks to answer all the questions he gives out using the textbook and memorize that.Lab tho.The POP quizzes were based off 100+ slides. My advice is learn the basics of the lab before class. The practicals were horrible, horribly specific. He ended up curving 1 letter grade cause we did so bad.
Took him for biol 360 and people hate on this guy for no reason. You actually have to do work and he tries to give credit in quizzes and tests which are all short responses. He curves as well; He's a troll also but so was I so I got his sense of humor. If you're not, you'll hate him. The lab was def the heavier part.
Ma is the most intelligent bio professor I've taken so far. His lectures are very interesting and he knows his stuff in and out. People exaggerate for no reason-he's not bad at all. His exams were straightforward and easy if you study. Pop quizzes are so easy but study the slides before class very well. Would def take him again.
Professor Ma's BIO226 class is pretty manageable. Lectures can be long but exams are fair if you stay on top of the material. Unstuck ai was a big help for my prep - along with the textbook.
BIO360 Ma is very intelligent and knows everything. He's very clear about grading so study well and you'll do well. I did get overwhelmed with the amount of material so it's important that you attend class to know what's important since there's100+ slides/chapter. His humor is funny and not all might get it. Hes a tough grader but he means good.
eh...........
sick in the head.
I am surprised to see Ma have such a low rating. I took 226 with him, and he was a great professor. His slides and lectures were really easy to understand. He is pretty chill and was always ready to answer any questions we had. The lab was also easy, as long as you pay attention during class and study.
