Really helps you with your writing. Uses lots of drafts so its easy to correct papers and get a good grade.
she is a bit weird
very caught up in herself...more interested in being a tree-hugger than really caring about what the students have to say/write. Too political for me!

She teaches well, yet when it comes to the papers she is unclear about what she wants to be said on them.
pretty good content and challenging to a certain extent
straightforward and clear...a good teacher and easy to talk to
She is very encouraging and helpful with papers and projects. She really wants her students to learn. Sometimes gets a little carried away with literature but only because she is passionate about English.
Polly is super enthusiastic and very helpful with critism of papers. Spells out what she wants and is very willing to talk outside of class. Very passionate about writing and it shows. You can redo any paper as many times as you want until you have an A
Does not give opposite views due credit. She will take points away from your papers if you have different views than her. Too liberal! I would suggest not taking her unless you're really liberal.
Buckingham unquestionably is among thee most outstanding English professors concerning every aspect possible. For those to think other wise need to reorganize her ability to positively influence others.
What can I say about Polly.. Ohh wait, a terrible teacher! An extremely liberal tree hugger. I didn't agree with her liberalism and got a 2.7 out of the class. The next quarter I took ENG 201 and got a 3.7 (a bit ridiculous?)
She is very helpful and motivating. Lots of in class group work. Fun class.
we had so many assignments; and so little time
Polly is a decent teacher. Lots of short papers. Once you figure out what she likes, its easy to get good grades on your papers. Class is boring, no need to come more than 2-3 days/week. If you're a good b.s.er you'll do pretty good on the final.
Was rude and sarcastic.
Polly was one of the most liberal people that i have ever met and she tried to push those views on kids in the class. also, everytime we discussed a story, it had to do with something sexual and she always had to point it out. pretty disgusting...

shes a hippy but pretty rad
I loved Polly! Her class was one of the few that I actually enjoyed and learned a lot in. She was very helpful and pretty clear about what she wanted. She gives every chance for success. I would love to have her again.
I had Polly for 201 and convinced a friend to transfer into her class with me. We both really enjoyed her as a professor. She has some views we didn't totally agree with, but we felt comfortable disagreeing. She is a rad professor and I would recommend peo
Very good at working with students, would go out of her way to do things for me and others. It was nice to have the other side of issues discussed in class. It makes for more well rounded minds
i didnt like her at first but then i realized i like the random opinions she has and how she just says "alright good" to the really stupid people's really stupid comments, always in the same tone of voice like shes talking to a dog- LOVE IT plus she gave us a bob dylan poem to study
Easy A... boring class.
She's strange at first, makes you wonder... She's totally flexible, and listens to your ideas and concerns.
Rips apart ideas. Favorites! I just generally don't like her.
This was the worst teacher I have ever had she is loony. Her liberal views block her for doing a good a job. It is a shame to see such talent be tainted by such narrow views that are forced on the rest of the class by a teacher. Avoid her if at all possible. By the way easy class got a 4.0.
An odd professor to say the least. She has the weird starving artist/hippie thing going on. Good luck with her. Seriously. You'll need it.
This class was awesome and she's a great teacher. I highly recommend. The other comments on here are stupid. Of course, a teacher is going to voice opinions. You don't HAVE to listen to that. Everything that is important to the class and learning the material is covered well.
She is an excellent teacher. She is liberal, but she does not "push her views" on the students. SHe is very open minded. She expects people to show up and do their work, and to try. If you do that, you will pass witha a decent grade.
I had her for 2 classes: Eng. 170 & 201. She is a horrible teacher who allows her very biased and crazy left-wing opinions to interfere with her teaching. She makes everything a hippie/bashing of all others that aren't liberal in her class. She likes to choose stories and poetry with ****ed and violent sexual themes. Don't take her. Easy A.
very lax teacher. Made papers due when she thought the class was ready. Hard grader but she allows for rewrites to improve your grade. Always available for help and a good teacher.
Polly is EXCELLENT! she plays devil's advocate, but only to make your arguments stronger.. She's a great critic, and she's always there to help you. Polly is very approachable, and open minded. She always cater's her curriculum to the needs of the class, especially when papers are due.
I had polly for intro to literature. She is always at least five minutes late for class, and extremely un-organized, however not the worst teacher I have had but also not the easiest. I will also say that I have NO intrest in the subject but it wasn't that hard. Just show up and do the assignments and you will pass.
this lady chooses favorites and loves worksheets and high school book work.

I had polly for 101 and 201 and i absolutely loved her. she is very helpful in and out of class. she'll bend the rules for her students and help them out as much as she can. she is a little cooky but its in a good way
I had Polly for 101, 201, & intro to lit.. She was very helpful and she made it easy. She give out work to do, but if you attend class everyday it helps. I strongly recommend taking any course from her.
Offbeat sense of humour but still very funny.
Super cool and helpful. Might take a few days to get used to her but it's worth it. Has a sense of humor. Understanding. Easy pass so long as you come to class and actually try.
LOVED this class. You can rewrite any of your papers as many times as you want and get a better grade each time. She's super helpful and willing to brainstorm with you to get a paper going. Like the comment a few before this one, 'she's cooky but in a good way.'
A very good teacher. She knows her**** and will help you receive your desired grade in any way she can. I highly recommend her for any english or writing class. a very good teacher!
Polly is a really great teacher, she knows what she is talking about and she is always willing to help you brainstorm for a topic. I got a 4.0 in English 101 with her!
She is cool! I like her weird examples!
Took this online, got a 3.6. So much work! There are 6 lessons & several assignments in each. A lot of reading/analyzing then writing about it. In my opinion, her grading is biased. If she doesnt like it or dont think its right she'll be critical. Dont take this class. It wont be easy if ur not writer & especially if you dont have a lot of time.
She is a good professor. She is helpful and is passionate about the subject matter! Do all of the essays and you will do well in the class!
Terrible, never take an online class from her, she is unorganized and just plain ridiculous.
Meh. Not the worst teacher I've ever had, but I wouldn't recommend her. There's a lot of work that is unavoidable. She takes a long time to grade things and isn't always clear in her expectations. I've had much better English professors at EWU.
Great teacher! You all that took her online, no duh it's a lot of work, you're taking an english/writing course online, what did you expect. I liked her class a lot, very helpful and I will be taking her for 201. Best english class I have taken yet.
Polly Buckingham is a complete psycho. She is the worst teacher I have ever had. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM HER! She is unclear about every assignment, and don't even bother emailing her - she probably won't even bother to email you back. The prompt for the midterm of this class DID NOT EVEN SAY WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT! She is an embarrassment to EWU.
Awesome teacher! She really cares about her students and the assignments. She is FAIR even if she doesn't agree with you. People who do not do well in her class are not trying. GOOD for them for failing!
She truly cares about her students. I know this because I only took one class from her my freshman year. I'm now a senior and she still knows me by name and is interested in my life and how I'm doing. Most teachers would have totally forgotten.
I had Polly Buckingham for English 201 and I really loved her class. I am an English major so I already liked English, but her class made it all the more. You really can tell she cares about her students... I took her class last year and she still addresses me by name whenever I see her.
This class was pretty cut and dry. You knew what you had to do, and when you had to do it. Your success in this class will depend upon your ability to work with out someone telling you what to do every 3 seconds.
I am writing in response to the person who said that if you don't do well in her class, you are not trying. Whoever said that is totally wrong. I took Polly's class and did well. I rated her because she is the worst professor I have ever had.
She is a great teacher and wants to learn all of her students' names. Awesome. and cares
She's an amazing professor. She has a passion for not only the subject, but for helping her students understand English composition better. She's encouraging, approachable, genuine, & yes dang cool she remembers your name outside of the classroom. I know I'm blessed for her insight & different mainstream views & that is refreshing. Right on! :)
I absolutely love this class and Polly is a great teacher. She is fairly easy-going and will work with you in most situations. Yet, I feel I have learned so much and improved greatly from taking her class.
Bad use of time. WE did nothing the first three weeks of class, but than we had several papers going on at the same time. She isn't clear about what she wants from your paper, and gives bad feedback. Has high expectations, and doesn't teach anything new about writing, just expects you to learn on your own and turn in Fantastic papers
I love Polly! She remembered everyones names and I could email her anytime I had a question. She knew exactly how each one of us wrote our essays and told us all personally how we could improve. Finally a class that is like college, not high school!
She is really helpful when you ask her for help. She tells you exactly what you need to work on too!
One of the best teachers I have had! She is so easy going and is always there to help!
I've never rated a Professor before. She was so horrible that I had to. DO NOT TAKE HER. Seriously. Worst Professor I've ever had.
Extremely liberal, very monotone voice, and makes it very hard to pay attention. Try as hard as you want, it won't help at all. But she's not the only professor for 170, just one of the worst... Goodluck!
It was just plain boring! The whole time she was talking I couldnt even pay attention.
Polly Buckingham has high standards for her students. That being said, I have never seen one professor work so hard to make sure that every student was handled personally. She has a passion for writing and her feedback can be expected to be balanced between "Good" and "meh." If you can deal with constructive criticism, you will thrive. Enjoy.
Easily my least favorite teacher at EWU up to this point. She is a hard grader and left me out to dry when I needed help.
very thorough English teacher, but lacking that spark of light you want in a creative writing instructor. She is very knowledgeable but also very dry and cannot inspire other to their best, beyond a technical level. If she has that spark of creativity, she doesn't know how to share it with students. I will not take a class with her again.
This class was difficult. The class had about 7 different professors overall teaching 7 different units over the course of the quarter. All of whom were very unclear and had different teaching methods and styles. The inconsistency of this made it very hard to get into a good routine to learn and keep up with the material. All the tests were online
Honestly her lecture was boring and made me want to fall asleep. I very rarely feel like falling asleep during lectures. She is also very outspoken in some of her views that make her seem very close-minded. The class itself was nice but Polly was one of my least favorite professors.
She puts down other students and faculty behind their backs, but in front of the entire class. Totally aborts creativity by telling students no genre fiction writing is allowed. She teaches like she's trying to eliminate competition. Watching fungus grow on a turd is more inspiring than Polly's class.
I love all the sheltered conservative's comments of shock, awe, and general distaste at being exposed to differing viewpoints. Polly is a tough teacher, she WILL push you past your comfort zone but if you want to be coddled at the teet then go back to your mommy. If you want to learn about the writing process, then pay attention to what Polly says.
Polly has a lot of great things to say in her classes and she's easy to talk to. Very down-to-earth and if you put in the effort, you'll get a good grade. My one complaint is that she doesn't tolerate genre-fiction, and sticks to strictly "literary" works when it comes to what you read and what you write in her class. But you really do learn a lot.
Gave a lot of extra credit so it's super easy to get an A if you put in the effort! A bunch of short quizzes that are easy. Your class grade really depends on how much effort you put into it. Not an unreasonable amount of reading or papers, its what youd expect. Lectures can be rough sometimes but it's helpful to attend. Overall a very easy class.
Clear syllabus, insightful critiques on stories, and just a joy to be in class with. She hates genre fiction, which is her only bias. She provides the texts. Be prepared to come to class having read everything or there is no point to class.
Participation matters in this class. You will write a 2-4 page paper each week on a poet or poetry book, but they aren't that hard and she'll give you feedback. Pretty specific on teaching you to correctly set up your poetry quotes. Overall, a very discussion based class. She also offers a lot of good extra credit opportunities.
Polly is an amazing professor and it would be a mistake not to take a workshop by her! Beware of writing genre fiction, focus on writing literary fiction. Assignments: 1 workshop paper 15 pg min, a revised version of the same story for a final plus a 3-5pg reflection. Read other students papers and give one page (single space) response.
I took a creative writing class with Polly and she was great. As long as you show up to her class and do the work outside of class, you will be fine. She does not grade on what you write, as long as you do the work. You can tell she really cares about her students and really enjoys her job!
Rude prof in charge of Creative Writing Minor/Major Degree. Apparently keeps changing the required classes of both degrees. Also keeps telling us students to sign up for classes that are not required to complete the degrees. Unclear on what we are to be graded on and when they are to be graded. Still waiting...
There is a lot of writing and participation matters. Her classes are very dialogue heavy, so you must read the material and be ready to contribute. She has a lot of valuable experience and knowledge regarding literary fiction and publishing. Grading is usually about a week or two turnaround. All the readings are literary fiction, no genre fiction.
Rambles a lot. Not very interesting to listen to. Assigns a lot of readings/writing assignments. Always kinda hoped my bus would crash on the way to this class.
The class is pointless as a multi week class, there is not nearly enough information and it ends up being an opportunity for Polly to talk about the school magazine. Everything in this class is covered in CRW 210, but you still have to take it for the degree. Polly likes to talk a lot and it can get really monotonous. Do the work, you'll get an A.
I've taken several of Pollys classes and I love her. She likes to talk and her analysis classes definitely go the full time which is often boring and tiring, especially if you don't have much to say about the book that week. But her workshop classes are more than worth it. She's hard on you sometimes but she made me a much better writer.
