..notes up, hard tests/assignments and enjoyed seeing us suffer
Poman was pretty bad; I got an A but didn't learn a thing
he didn't have a clue
an absolutely horrible teacher. seemed to enjoy seeing us suffer.
Extremelly unfair final. The guy can't teach.
Not at all helpful. Whip-out-slides master.
WORST CLASS EVER and those of u who are in electrical engineering u know this is no small feat give the class a rediculasly hard midterm where the average was less than 30%. Impossible to follow or understand final is going to be a killer
exceptionally excellent teacher
Hard course didn't do well on midterm but Poman very very fair and reasonable in marking schemes to help those struggling to pass his course. Nice guy, Thanks Poman.
This course builds on Elec 250. It's kind of a tough course but Poman does a good job teaching it. Assignments are long and frequent but cover the course material well. Exams are ok. Not too tough nor too easy provided that you practice and DO THE ASSIGNMENTS YOURSELF. Labs are ok.
Slide go up, slides come down... didn't write much and just read from the slides. Marks midterms horribly takes marks off for any little thing. Also gives questions to do in class... and wastes like 20 min on it before putting up answer.
Enjoys seeing a 30% avg! and if you think the final will come fair, you're absolutely wrong
Basically a worn-out looking professor who explains as if we were experts/professionals. A whole class with low grades is common. Also reads off powerpoint slides , without explaining how he got to the final answer. Beware!
Another useless prof... Just reads slides that come directly out of the textbook - no additional material available. Midterm and final were both ridiculous; midterm tested us on material not yet covered in class. Not worth attending classes, just read the text. Will avoid Poman in the future at all costs!
His midterm (class avg of ~30%) and final were ridiculous extrapolations of the subject matter, and basically require a lot of guesswork. It's like he didn't even know what class he was making the tests for when he wrote them.
All examples and homework assignments were long form math/calc questions. The midterm and final were MULTIPLE CHOICE and NOTHING like the homework sets. He wrote a midterm that got a FAILING average and he was forced to let us write it again. (Maybe just TEACH better, or ensure your midterm is relevant) The final was also a joke, nothing like H/W.
Will just read off lecture slides, which are just figures and text from the textbook. Quizzes, midterm and final exam were straight from the textbook. His intentions for teaching elec216 are helping prepare you for elec340.
Very boring class and Poman doesn't help make it interesting. His slides and lectures are confusing even though the material is pretty easy. The course is basically memorizing formulas because you're not given them in quizzes or exams. Good thing is quiz and exam questions are straight from the text.
This prof could be easily replaced with a sheet of paper that says READ THESE PAGES. He just stands at the front of the class reading slides from the textbook. They are also useless as he skips through them utterly fast. He doesn't even teach the material being shown. He basically reads formulas. The exam didn't even cover major topics. Stay Away!!
What a horrible experience. This entire class was him reading calculus formulas off slides. And then on his tests he expected somehow we would have an intuitive understanding. Midterm was multiple choice with a CLASS AVG of 30%. In other words, the entire class was randomly guessing on basically every question. As bad as it gets.
Poman can be really dry and doesn't really do examples, ever. Did alright on the quizzes and good on the midterm. Felt good walking into the exam, . In one word I would describe the exam as cruel. Questions we've never seen before, incredibly difficult. Only way I'm passing is when it gets scaled.
The quizzes were fairly easy (straight from the hw assignments). The midterm was super easy as well. Most people were doing fine although no one was understanding anything. Then the final came... We were tested mostly on content from the last 2 lectures. I went in with an A and walked out with a C+. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Poman So doesnt teach, he reads slides which are straight out of the textbook. He never ever solves example questions in class, rather reads the formulas for you. His accent is very heavy and most of the time unintelligible. Dont expect to learn anything in class. Only 10 or so people attend the lectures out of 60 students. Read the book instead.
This prof is the worst he just reads slides which are straight out of the textbook. Avoid at all costs.
Don't bother going to class. Just read the text and study past exams and the solution manual. Midterms and Final will probably be the worst experience of your academic career.
Poman is tough but fair. If you actually do the homework and read the text book you will get thought is courses. Copy your homework out of the solutions manual and you'll likly fail is class.
The tests are hard and he really wants to see if you know the material. The material is really theoretical and he has a good grasp of it. If you're stuck or need help go to his office hours or catch him after class. He has no problem walking through a question until you understand. Buy the textbook and make sure you know where everything is.
Lectures from powerpoint slides packed with formulas, with occasional examples on the board. Lectures at a very fast pace so good luck taking notes in class. Fortunately he provides notes for each chapter, so you can follow along and annotate as needed. Tests are hard but fair.
This man has nice sweaters. Show up. You'll see.
Don't take his courses. Bad accent and worst midterm.
Easiest midterm ever. Labs are never painful. Sweaters are nice, So.
Very bad professor. Simply reads off of his slides and doesn't really answer questions or do examples
Do not take a class with poman. Thick accent and reads his slides. Teach yourself everything and don't feel bad about skipping class at all. By the end of semester about 30% of the class showed up
He has very confusing slides, goes very quickly and if very hard to talk to. His midterm was the same length as the final, but only gave us 50 minutes to do it. the class average was a 6 out of 22 and the highest mark was 15. I ended up skipping a lot of his lectures and learned the whole course in about 35 hours over four days.
Not a very good lecturer. Granted, this course covers quite a bit of material in a small amount of time, but the use of power point to present everything wasn't very effective. Examples on the board might have been beneficial, but 99% of things he showed in lecture could be read directly from the textbook. Tests were not reasonable.
He has pre made slide that are not accessible until after the lecture and all he does is rea he equations and expects you to remember everything. If I could do anything around this teacher I would. Unfortunately there is no way... To sum things up, he puts you to sleep faster than the sandman..
Hard class, mother of god. If you copy answers from others and don't attend lectures, you will fail. If you actually take time to learn it is a great class. He will help you if you ask him for some. Midterm is hard, Final is easier.
Reads from his slides every lecture. Study textbook and assignments and you'll do fine. Exams aren't too bad.
Look forward to learning everything out of the textbook on your own if you're going to pass this class. So's lectures aren't worth going to as they present very little useable material and his voice is very hard to understand and also may put you to sleep. Ridiculously hard material. Take Math 200 BEFORE taking this course!
Roman So definitely did the best he could with our course. The class should really be split into about three classes so he has to cover TONS of content in one semester. He really cares about the students in the class and would change the dates of midterms and assignments if the class talked to him about it. He also brought fun demos to lecture.
Just take phys 216. Poman put the least amount of effort humanly possible into his elec 216 class. Things like written examples or class demos dont exist. Combine that with his thick accent, and his sole teaching tool being the slides which are distributed by the texts publisher resulted in a dismal learning experience.
Dunno if it's me or him, but i don't understand anything that is going on in class.
By far, the worst prof Ive had so far. Heres the thing, he uses slides mostly, which I usually dont mind. but, he throws a whole lotta formulas and diagrams at you at once and straight up reads them to you, assuming that you understand everything. I mean, I can read it myself, thanks
He just reads off his "nicely put" slides; such a waste of my time and money. It seems like Uvic's electrical engineering department has no standards whatsoever.
Poman is a great human being, but an awful test maker. I loved his lectures and presence in labs, but his course structure was punishing. 65% final, 5 questions that felt arbitrarily chosen. If you got lucky and memorized the solution to a question, you'd get a 13% higher grade that someone who didn't. My pre-final mark was A+, post-final was C+.
Terrible. Grading criteria is nonexistent. He might decide to take 100% off of a problem even if you had it 95% correct (yes, for part-mark problems). His formula sheets are 90% stuff you don't need, and the other 10% will barely help you on the exams. I have had 2 courses with him and I can say Poman So is easily the worst teacher I've ever had.
Poman So is the worst professor I have had at UVic and the worst teacher I've had overall. I also had him for Elec 216 which proved to be just as bad of an experience. His lectures consist of him reciting information dense, and highly technical slides to you quickly, without explaining any of the concepts. He is incapable of taking criticism.
He was the great professor. This class was difficult therefore reading textbook before going to class is highly recommended.
Poman So seems like a really good person. He expects you to read the textbook and learn from it. The most useful classes are the ones where he derives things on the board rather than pointing at complex slides. Also, you actually have to gain an understanding of the material to pass (including the math), not just memorize how to do the assignments.
He might be the worst professor I've had at UVic, his course has too much material and the lectures are hard to follow. His expectation is that we will fully understand very difficult concepts in the first course we're exposed to them, which is way too optimistic, and he put all the blame on us when his midterm had a failing average (47%).
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF WHAT SO EVER! This prof is incapable of actually teaching and will not take helpful criticism what so ever. He consistently talks down to students and treats no one with respect. He expects you to learn everything from every lecture slide and moves way too quickly without actually explaining anything. ABSOLUTE MORON!!
Lazy, unprofessional, and unorganized professor. It's clear he is incapable and unmotivated when he teaches. Tests do not apply to important coursework. Avoid Poman if you can.
Not the best prof but definitely not the worst. Dr. So made the course somewhat bearable by making midterms directly based on homework/slides and even gave feedback telling students to see him in office hours if a "fatal mistake" was made on the midterm. All midterms were also scaled.
Poman puts as little effort into the class as possible and tries to make up for it by offering help outside of class. Be warned, if you go to those office hours to explain your frustration he will belittle you and take no criticism. All homework and test questions are straight out of the text so practice those (all answers can be found by googling)
Ineffective prof; not very good at explaining concepts, seems to assume you know other courses that aren't actually pre-reqs. Fell behind early on, then seemed to rush a bit throughout most of the semester to attempt to catch up Appreciated him taking the time to speak to people who had issues with the midterms Be sure to understand Gauss' Law
His tests are using concepts that are impossible to apply to any other situation than the ones taught in class. The midterms where unrelated. Even if you think you know what you are doing, his tests will be an unpleasant surprise to you.
Lectures and slides are useless. Merely screenshots pictures of the textbook in his lecture slides and recites them word for word. Midterms are ridiculously difficult and contain obsecure problems instead of general knowledge of course concepts. For most, their course grade will not accurately reflect their grasp of course material.
Poman So is one of, if not, the worst professor I have ever had. His tests typically consist of topics that are covered on 1 of the 100-200 slides you have to memorize. Good luck trying to talk to him too, usually his advice is to study harder. With a class average of 40% maybe its not the students who are the problem, its the prof.
This professor didn't send out a midterm breakdown until 11 pm when the test was at 12pm the next day. lol...
Terrible teacher. His lectures r useless. Assignments are different from the tests. Learn how to use a smith chart for multiple reflections. And learn how solve the equations of an E&M Wave incident upon a plane. He will tell which question will be 50% of the test, and you will probably get it wrong but try not to. Thomas Darcie is much better.
Poman So is the worst, most nasty and immoral professor. Please get away from him. Do NOT take his class if possible.
Disgusting professor. Won't take it again. His lecture was actually dry and useless.
Don't waste your time. Stay away from him and his lectures, or you will be so annoyed by taking his course.
Truly the worst professor I've had in seven years and two universities. Gives you a massive formula sheet for tests and none of the formulas will be used, you must memorize the random useful ones you find. Does not give you any information on what to prepare for, even the practice tests are useless.
Poman's teaching style is hard to learn from... Disorganized slide decks that he breezes through with no extra explanation, textbooks filled with mistakes, disjointed assignments, and unclear marking criteria on exams... The labs were great though to learn to breadboard. Don't let my good grade fool you, I put in HOURS every week to teach myself..
Asked him for help in a lab. Called both me and my partner stupid and blamed us for skipping lectures (even though we hadn't). The issue we were trying to get help for was how to get the janky physics program to work properly, as the lab didn't have a good description. All of our math was totally fine. Retook the class with Jens and it was fine.
Remorseful experience !
avoid at all cost if you actually want to learn something in this course
although he is a smart individual and knows the material well, he definitely sucks at explain and expects you to have the genius of a brain he thinks he has to look at a tough question and know exactly what to do, and the smerk he has when explaining makes you feel like a kindergarten child
absolutely catastrophic experience
Dr. So is one of the worst professors I've had at UVIC. His lectures are completely useless as he does not introduce any information different from what is on the lecture slides, nor does he explain what's going on in the lecture slides. Super disorganized and unable to take criticism for poor class performances. Also has a big ego (cuz why not).
Do not do it.
worse professor Ive had so far in my life
I am literally switching to MECH because this course is mandatory and he is the only professor teaching it, completely messed up my future !
have not met a single person that told me they benefited from this class due to the way he is teaching although it is supposed to be a core informative course for biomed engineers...
you will regret every second you decided to take this course with Poman
What a nightmare !
Poman is not one of, but truly the Worst prof I've ever seen in my entire life. Sighs!
He is smart, but he also expects his students to be just as knowledgeable. He rushes through the slides during the entire classes, using only the easiest examples, but you'll encounter much more challenging problems on the exam... within limited time. The class average on the midterm was around 40%. Be prepared to study on your own.
Poman's lectures were thorough and taught effectively. His slides and lecture examples were useful when studying at home, and the assignments were comprehensive and fair. The lab was straightforward and easy. The professor implemented mandatory attendence which was deeply unpopular with the class, and his midterm was ruthless. Final was easy.
Implemented a mandatory attendance with an immediate fail for attending less than 75% of lectures. These mandatory lectures consisted solely of reading screenshots from the textbook. Lectures were very rushed and basic examples in class were often incomplete. Midterm was significantly more difficult than anything covered in class. Not a good time.
Poman seems like a nice guy however his grading schemes were absolutely brutal and never reflected my actual knowledge of the content. His lecture were simple examples followed by hard midterms with a failing average.
you will need therapy after this one.
course is definitely not supposed to be as impossible as he makes it to be. PS: he will assume that you have 10 degrees in electrical engineering when explaining something, goodluck.
final is 60%, you will need to know everything in the book in detail from cover to cover, or else forget passing.
about to kms
Poman So is not passionate about teaching, and it really shows with the lack of effort he puts to make this core course actually somewhat understandable for students to benefit from. No one knows what is going on, no one knows what to expect. Absolute catastrophy and dissapointment that the electrical engineering department is allowing this.
if you are not religious, pick one and start praying... asap.
You're totally responsible for your bad choice in taking the course he teaches.
What a nightmare! I needed to have counselling session in this past semester, as I was too stressed out taking the course he taught. I'm an ace student, but I failed this time. Not even one, none of my classmates appreciated the way of his teaching.
M A L I C I O U S m f. :( Good luck ~
Poman was the worst professor in my entire degree which I have completed. I attended class and he openly states that the course materials contain many errors. Asking for help meant being told to “review the entirety of ECE 216 & 250” with no guidance. Final exam was 60% and contained obscure content. Traumatized me completely.
