Very intellectual. Took history of Criminological thought. He knows his stuff but CANNOT teach it. Not approachable. You will have to type out his lectures word for word and then decipher what his words meant later. I am serious. He is that unclear. Readings are useless too. If you get A's expect Cs or D's. I'm an A student by the way.

This professor know little how to communicate. During his lecture, he walks all over the 'stage', if you will. It may help him gather his thoughts, but it is really distracting and hard to focus for the students when he is so restless.

Brutal marker. His exam is an in class essay worth 50% and he does not even explain what we should study for. I think he just likes to see his students fail because it boosts his ego (He thinks hes so smart) Be prepared to not understand 50% of what he says because he talks fast, his accent, and his love of 1800 diction. So arrogant.

One of the worst Prof's I've ever had. He is very rude and insults you indirectly when he gives his famous speeches. Also a very hard marker for a first year class. I went to every class, paid complete attention and got 60's on everything.If you have this prof, switch to a different one or just dropped the class completely

Two midterms(one essay question); both worth 25% and final (2 essays) worth 50%. Prof is very scatterbrain. speaks very fast and when asked to repeat something he says something totally different. no need to get the book, any information other that notes needed can be found online. No electronics in this class.

Okay, I tried really hard for this classes midterm that just happened only to get a terrible mark, like man I put in the work, I study, I show up to every class just to get a 55. Man needs to realize we have to write the essay quickly so may not have to full go back and check our work so credit out the awkward sentences or minor grammer errors

He talks way too fast. He doesn't allow for laptops which makes it extremely hard to sit through his boring three hour lectures, as well as hand writing pages on pages of notes. The midterms and exams are awful as he only tests you in one way, and does not allow you to show your knowledge any other way.

Such a hard marker. You could write the same paper in a different class and get A, but in his you will get a D. I honestly couldn't tell you what a good paper for him is. If this is needed for your major, RIP!

I'm in my fourth year of full-time university and this is by far the most challenging class I've ever taken. Must handwrite notes, and difficult bc he talks extremely fast, doesn't have useful slides, and doesn't post slides or notes online. The readings are also very hard to get through, and honestly some made me more confused than I was before :(

Let me start by saying that he is a good teacher. The way he teaches is great! You will understand everything he teaches.... Then you still end up having a bad grade because he focuses too much on your writing than on the actual info you give..

Class was highly difficult and I would never recommend taking it with this prof he is very confusing. His lectures never make sense and he uses information that does not match with reliable sources online so if you don't totally understand his lectures it is easy to be very confused. He does not allow u use a computer which makes note writing hard

He tends to focus on the english part of the tests, not the actual information. 2 midterms and a final. 1 essay each midterm and 2 for the final. The prof is passionate but thinks that we are capable of writing a perfect essay in an hour and a half. Gives very low marks even when you attend class and do readings. Class average was a D.

Don't take him. Unrealistic expectations for students and unfair tests. You can understand the class perfectly but you won't get a good grade because you're not able to write the perfect essay in 1.5 hours. Also he's very condescending and rude to students. Just don't take him.

Seems like a nice guy, lectures are confusing and all over the place. He calls on people randomly in class to put them on the spot. Seriously the toughest class in my university career, took this first-year course in my last semester of my undergrad to get an easy A, that's not going to happen. Maybe he should be an English professor.

The lectures are very disorganized and repetitive. The content is very difficult as there are no clear concepts discussed but is simply a mess of thoughts taught. The prof does not organize his thoughts beforehand but states things as they come to mind. Does not communicate material well, content is very confusing, and prof is a difficult marker.

Within the first 10 minutes of the final a kid ran out to throw up because of the stress of this class. All exams are essay based. It does not matter if you know the material, if you do not write how he wants you fail. Half the class was failing going into the exam and he blames the students for it. Spare your mental health and pick another prof.

His classes are awfully long and boring. He is extremely repetitive and his midterms/final exams are a joke... he expects us to write an essay in an hour and grades without considering this circumstance.

Midterm and finals are essay questions only. Puts together his own "textbook" which is a bunch of photocopies from different books. Never skip his class.

I honestly don't think he cares about his students and is a very strict marker (he marks everything - the TAs are simply there to hand things back). expects way too much from us.

seriously just leave. i literally left the faculty and switched my program because of this man. he doesnt teach in an understandable way, wont give feedback or answer emails and doesnt go to half his office hours. he only does tests and marks you on how he wants the question answered. even if youre right he will mark you wrong

The worst professor I have had during the pandemic. Deletes the lectures from Brightspace 24 hours after they are posted for no specified reason. Confusing religious readings that are accompanied with lectures that do little to help explain the content. Mark is composed of a midterm and an exam, that is it. Terrible.

This class was for my major but I had to drop since I was receiving such a low grade over a technical difficulty. His class is made up of a 40% test and 60% exam, and his lectures definitely have interesting topics but are hard to follow because theyre boring and full of repetition. Good riddance.

This class is extremely lecture heavy, and test heavy. He does not spread out marks evenly, there are two tests and both count for a lot. He is very specific with what needs to be done and you can lose a lot of marks for not doing it correctly. If you miss the lectures, it is NECESSARY to get the notes. During the pandemic, he has not made it easy.

Terrible professor and human being. Do not recommend. It's a shame that all you need is a Ph.D. to teach and they don't actually screen the professors to make sure they are capable of holding a conversation and establishing a connection with students.

I have A's in all my classes except this one despite attending and doing all the readings. I am a third year and this is my hardest class. he's clearly really smart and loves what he is studying but he should not teach.

Prashan Ranasinghe's course is simply incompetent, lectures are hidden within PDF slides rather than uploaded to the brightspace platform as every other professor does. You are graded by two assignments for the entire course, the midterm worth 40% and the final worth 60%. DONT TAKE THIS COURSE. Your emails will be ignored. You will be ignored.

A very pompous man who believes he is above all of his students, and speaks to them this way as well. Gives little to no feedback, and gives students the bare minimum including only posting classes for 48 hours. Class has no room for error as the midterm is 40% and final is 60%. Taking notes from the lectures isn't too strenuous. However, his lectures are terrible format for actually absorbing knowledge. The required readings do not align with the lectures at all, yet you have write three 750 word essays on the readings and lectures... for 100% of your grade (40% midterm w/1 essay, 60% final w/2 essays). AVOID THIS PROF!!

Despite only receiving a C+ in the course I was in one of the highest quintiles as the average for the class was 56%, for this he criticized the ability of the students to reciprocate his viewpoints in only two assessments. There was no assigned textbook, and a some lectures he posted were dated from the previous semester. Worst he dodges questions

Prof Ranagashe is one of the rudest, undermining human beings I have ever encountered. He simply believes he is far above everyone else and has a completely unrealistic grading scheme, in which he doesnt follow school protocol by returning marked exams for students to review. Worst prof ever.

Grade for the class is based on just two tests: the midterm (worth 40%) and the final exam (worth 60%). All the readings are 20+ pages long. His lectures are just black screens and him ranting and repeating the same subjects for 40 minutes. Didn't take criticism well at all and put very little effrort into giving his students extra help.

I had a very hard time in this class. The only thing we had were his recorded lectures and readings. We had one midterm and a final which were both essays. His lectures were very hard to listen to because he would repeat the same thing during 30 minutes and he would make snorting sounds in the microphone which is very disturbing.

I never write reviews on my profs but this man is awful. He may be smart but he does not care if you learn anything or not. He just posts hours worth of him talking into a black screen, no visual aspect at all. This class is a waste of time and money.

He never marks fairly, and when you ask him what you did wrong he never gives you a straight answer that you can benefit from. Lectures are 3 hour long recordings of a black screen and its just dry and hard to follow. Very rude and pretentious to his students. He's also very unaccomodating and the marking scheme is based off of two heavily weighted evaluations (40% & 60%). I would rather mop the ocean floor with my eyelash than take this class again.

Took as an elective, although the course design to feed in first year student. Prof Ranasinghe has unrealistic standard in terms of grading for students to learn. In terms of his grading, he is stringent in terms of pretty much everything.

Think of CRM1301 as just an English course. The midterm is worth 40% of your grade (final exam is 60%) and even if you know all of the info, you'll still struggle to pass. He doesn't have slides, talks in circles, and can be kinda rude. Also, no computers to take notes are allowed. Don't mess up grammar lol, he'll nail you by like 40%, not joking.

If you skip class, you will fail, he doesn't post anything on brightspace. If you miss classes for a valid reason (sick, personal issues) he will not give you any sort of help in catching up (no slides/lectures). Only pen and paper is allowed for taking notes and his lectures are quite disorganized so your notes will probably be all over the place.

I asked him to explain a word I was not familiar with that he used to formulate a question on the final exam and he told me that if I didn't even know what that word meant that I should not be writing the exam, and he left. No laptops, no content on Brightspace, 40% midterm and 60% final exam. This is the kind of prof you wish on your worst enemy.

This professor completely ruined my U Ottawa experience. He gave me 0% on my final exam for submitting it as a PDF instead of a Word doc—without even reading it. In our meeting, I was in tears, but he showed zero remorse and refused to reconsider. Absolutely unreasonable and unfair. Avoid him at all costs. He needs to be terminated.

I did not miss a single class and took extensive notes on both lectures and secondary readings. Somehow, I failed the final and to this day still have no idea why. He refused to answer any questions about it and arguably, it makes no sense based on my answers. The grading in this class is ridiculous, take my word for it and avoid!

God awful professor, couldnt care less about his students, ive taken him twice and he prides himself on failing students. Loves loves loves to hear himself talk. Dont take him! Very unprofessional during 1 on 1 meetings. I quit his class as soon as he threatened to fail me in his class because i missed ONE class. Do better!

He was so incredibly odd, the way the acted was unlike anything I've ever encountered. He spoke like he was under the influenced of something and I dropped the class after 2 lectures because he doesn't allow laptops and grades on 2 tests only (60 final and 40% midterm). If you're taking the class and are not religious, PICK ONE AND PRAY.

Questions on the test that we were asked were highly unfair and so irrelevant to the course. He talks in circles most of the time in class to explain one concept, which can be summarized in three sentences. As a third-year student, I just feel really bad for the first years who think this is the expectation for university classes. Take ANYONE else.

THIS WILL BE THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF YOUR LIFE COME OCTOBER, DO NOT TAKE HIM. It's so unfortunate that first years will take him thinking he is "hilarious" and "fun", but TRUST you will fail and suffer. Even if you're the best and "not like other students" (coming from someone with grades above 98%), he illegally goes against school policies.

them poor kids of his are stuck with an insecure father who failed on his writings because the world does not need ANY of his thoughts, who now wants to make himself believe he is important and indispensable. well prashan, you ain't. lack of intellectuality, speaks in circles, cannot answer questions, incredibly rude, should NOT be a teacher.

Don't be fooled, this is not a criminology class, it's a "I want to feel like I'm smart so I talk in circles about random things" class. The faculty wants him out, and it's been the case for a long time. If even they don't think he should teach, then SAVE YOURSELF and take anyone else (Caroline G. especially actually teaches criminology!).

This guy must be on cocaine cause I have no other explination for the way he acts. He lectures about things that seem unrelated to the course and is obbsessive about attendance.

i attended every single lecture and apparently i'm not eligible to even write the final exam. i have done attendance every single time. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. he is horrible and should be fired immediately.

Pick any other professor available. Avoid at all costs.

Every time I've spoken to this prof, he's been rude and condescending.He provides nothing on brightspace except syllabus. I'm not sure why he is a first year lecturer. The only thing he cares about is attendance and his ego. Save yourself the headache and anxiety. Please not take this class with THIS PROF, seriously.
