Good instructor, but too much work. He is very tough on speech grades.
Online class; hard grader, no feedback.
Ni is not clear with what he wants, on how he grades, and his lectures are very Dr. Phil like. If you value your learning and your gpa, try another professor!
He is one of the best teachers. I learnt a lot from his class. I think I will remember him all of my life.
Professor, Ni is great. I heard that he is good if you take lecure-class(not online) He is helpful, and he really cares students. However, if you get a sense that you do not like his style, just do not take it.
GREAT speaker; gave lectures I will remember for the rest of my life! Practical, real-life material that you can USE, not the stuff out of most textbooks; just fascinating information. Grading system is unfair, based on perfection not on improvement.
I have mixed feelings about Preston. He gives interesting assignments and seems nice and approachable but at times is a hard-*ss for no reason. He seems more interested in hearing himself talk than really connecting with students.
If you have an LD, good luck. He's full of himself, likes his stories not yours. NO EYE CONTACT. I can't believe a man with so much background and potential can deliver a well-performed lecture without any content. He is not worth your time or money. Even his colleagues agree in his poor skills
I think Prof. Ni's classes are for students who want to learn something about themselves and how to successfully relate to the world. He really makes a difference with what he does. If you want a teacher who cares about being popular this is not the class for you.
Very knowledgeable, passionate. real life useful facts and communication methods. Good teacher. Easy if you put in effort. Class was fun. Doesn’t put you on the spot, if you get nervous and mess up he is very supportive and helpful.
This is a good course to take...The teacher comes across as being very much in love with himself, which was evident in his manner of speaking and in personal exaples. Regardless of that, you'll learn a lot about yourself in the class and do some assignments that can help you throughout life.
Very good teacher. Does not hide his fustration, or lack of tolerance for lateness or absence.
boring class but actually taught some good info. preston is weird, he's probably the only speech teacher that doesn't look at people and stares straight at the wall. easy A though
Fairly interesting class. He thinks he's going to change your life.
Preston is AWESOME!! He did change my life and took a real interest in his students. Do not take this class if you are not willing to take a good, hard look at yourself. Like any class, you get what you give. I recommend giving 100%. He is very helpful and interesting!! I volunteer to speak in my other classes now!!
This class is a lot of fun, I'm really glad I took it. Don't take it if you can't be honest with yourself or others, there is a lot of sharing of personal stuff with classmates.
preston is a genuinely nice guy but sometimes i disagreed with the things he said which drove me crazy. There is a lot of self help incorporated in the class and he expects you to be really honest about yourself. I took his class once a week for nearly 4 hours at a time... and wanted to shoot myself in the head most of the time. overall nice guy.
He is an awesome teacher. You will learn a lot about communicating and also about yourself. Also be prepared to learn a lot about people in your class. One of the best classes I have taken at foothill.
A lot of the time I felt I was in group therapy...it gets pretty corny at times but it's an easy A and some of the group work is fun. You do have to be pretty personal but just talk about your problems and how you overcame them etc, etc and you'll get an A. QUite possibly the nicest guy in the world.
awesome teacher. enthusiastic, humorous, laid back teaching while always getting to the point. very nice, doesn't mind if you're a little late. makes the class fun. easy assignments, easy A if you write/talk about emotional stuff. sometimes he's a little too...zen...like if you're mad he's the anger management "gooz-fra-ba" guy you wanna slap
great teacher. learned a lot of valuable things about communication.
Answers to questions are not clear and grading is vague. How is that an example of good communication?
nice guy. but i want a good teacher, not a new friend. explanations are vague. never cites the source of his info.
I learned a lot from this class about being a better communicator. I think some people don't like the class because they don't want to honestly look at themselves.
great teacher. very clear about grading policies. very willing to help and discuss grades/ etc. be honest and open minded and this class is great.
I really enjoyed taking Prof. Ni's class. His class was easy because I enjoyed being there and doing the reading. His lecture were very interesting. I would highly recommend Prof. Ni.
lots of basic and repetitive information is given- he seems friendly and approachable on the outset, but after time dramatic stories and lots of talking, and disconnected responses to students questions in class, show him different. no eye contact with students, expects them to be personal when he is not. do NOT take his class, its a waste of time
always seemed very nice and friendly, almost too much so. class is relatively easy but be prepared to write a lot! group is more often than not group work where we share was we had written for our assignment. material was boring, but i'm not a communications person. and sometimes i couldn't tell if he was genuinely nice or if he is fake.
Mixed feelings about this course. You won't take away alot about communication. The class is taught much like a junior high or high school course. Good for students fresh out of high school wanting an easy A.
Liked him at first because he is very straight forward and his energy is contagious. After a while I felt like he expected too much out of students, especially ones who are extremely uncomfortable with public speaking. Wants you to talk about very personal things and expects a lot out of you. Take someone else if you can.
Very interesting classes. You can really apply subject matter to daily life and you learn about yourself. Professor is very friendly and approachable. He is helpful and tries to get everyone to participate. I really enjoyed this class, there is a lot of interacting. Even though I hate talking in front of class, it was only one time. Very fun class.
A very well thought through curriculum and extremely focused assignments produced the greatest reward for me. I was impressed at how much we were able to learn during this time. the teacher is very nice and easygoing as well as explains everything very clearly and sets expectations very well. I was extremely impressed and enjoyed myself a lot!!
I don't know how or why any one of you could rag on Preston. For real, the guy loves what he does and it's contageous. He's very clear about what he expects and does a fantastic job teaching the material. Seems like most of the people writing poorly about him here are simply trying to seek revenge for a bad grade.
suuuper easy, i dont know how ANYONE could get a bad grade! hes so helpful and sweet and nice, very easy going and you can clearly tell he loves what he teaches. he gets you into it, very enegetic and notes are very easy, he writes them for you, the quizes he tells you what the qustions will be, he really wants you to succeed. bettered my relations
He's probably one of the best instructors at Foothill. Very enthusiastic about teaching. Lots of homework writing assignments, but not bad if you like to write. Easy to get a good grade as long as you do all the homework. You will learn alot, stuff that is very applicable to real everyday life situations. His stories are entertaining...
He can teach you many interesting subjects to improve your communication skills. You will get an A easily if you attend his classes and you do the homework. The textbook was kind of useless, since he explains a lot better and more clearly than the textbook. It is a must attend class!
Extremely informative, he goes beyond what is required to teach and does it not to give you more work or frustrate you with useless information, but he does it to help you understand the big picture. One of the best classes i've ever taken. not sure if he's still teaching but if you find out he is, TAKE his class. he's very kind to all his students
Pr. Ni is truly passionate about Communication. He wants his students to succeed, and the course content is not incredibly difficult. Attend lecture regularly. HIS LECTURE IS AMAZING. Take good notes. He is very informative and taught me so much. Highly recommended, especially young students. His class is really practical class.
The hybrid online/in person class was easy but you have to write a lot, and it's pretty personal. Nothing can be submitted electronically which is ridiculous for an online class. The online portion of the class was really pointless. Didn't use the book at all, but require you to buy it.
One of the best classes at Foothill. Mr. Ni's lectures are very interesting and apply to real life. On-line and text assignments are well organized and clear. This course improved my communication. It may not be right for some who just want to do minimum work and care less, but I learned a lot and appreciated the experience.
He is an amazing teacher I took him for interpersonal communication in class not online. While he does require a good amount of essays he makes it possible to get an A. He is very passionate about what he teaches so it was a very fun class to be in. DO NOT MISS TAKING THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
Wonderful teacher!I took his hybrid class and you have to attend to understand the material on the papers and quizzes you have to do. He is very relate-able and uses his own experiences to help him get his points across! Best class I have taken at Foothill in the last 3 years! This is a class where I will use the material for the rest of my life!
he is a good teacher. He knows what he is talking about. Make sure to go to class and take notes because you will need them for the online exams.
He is a great professor. I really enjoyed the hybrid class. Even though the class was several hours, time seemed to fly by as we listened to his funny stories and words of advice. I learned so much from this class and highly recommend this course and his Comm 55 class. I now have a passion for communications!
Within the first session I had already learned a few new communication tricks. It was simply amazing how much he covered in an hour and it all still stuck in my head. Ni is a great professor; he engages his students and makes his lectures interesting to pay attention to. As long his rules are followed and the work gets done well, expect an A+.
Professor Ni,is a great teacher and truly passionate one at that. His lectures apply to life and they stick with you. There is a lot of writing, but its apart of the state req. Take the class, you will learn solid tips for your life personal and professional. How to communicate and the psych of other cultures.
I signed up for this class with the expectation of learning some communication tactics only. Professor Ni's lectures and assignments far exceeded my expectations and taught me how to achieve happiness through effective communication. He has strict class rules but truly cares about his students at heart. Will take another class with him.
A bit full of himself and his ideas are a bit talk showish but overall theres a lot to take away from the class. i recommend it to everyone. theres a lot of writing but the material is very simple
Mr. Ni is truly passionate about what he teaches and I can honestly say what I learned from his class I will use for life. He has weekly assignments but they're not too hard as long as you keep up with your class work. Recommend highly.
I learned a lot from this class that helped me improve my communication. Professor Ni is knowledgeable and very responsive to questions. He has weekly assignments but they're doable as long as you don't fall behind. Recommending this class to my friends!
While class meetings were interesting most of the time, I felt the assignment prompts were a little too personal. Also, there is no feedback on assignments, other than a score, unless you explicitly ask him. Quite a bit of work.
I took both interpersonal and career communication with prof. Ni. He has a real practical approach to teaching that makes learning fun. Very responsive to questions. What i learned from his classes has already helped me in my relationship and work.
His class is very interesting, I learned a lot of new communication skills, things that you can actually use on your daily life. WARNING: read the instructions for the assignments very careful because you can get in trouble without even you knowing it.
This was one of the best GE courses i've taken at foothill. professor Ni gives you very good skills for job success, and helped me plan my future. Even though I'm not working right now I plan to keep his notes for when I apply. Easy class to get an "A".
I had this teacher probably 10 years ago, and it was by far the best GE class I ever took. He is such a passionate and wonderful teacher. I learned a ton and still use techniques today that I learned from this class back then. Foothill is so lucky to have this amazing teacher on their staff!!!
I found little to no help from Professor Ni. I felt like he was a bit snotty when responding to my private messages with questions. He also provided NO modules/lectures for the course. We were also not able to view our incorrect answers in tests, which makes learning mistake harder. I was not happy with Professor Ni and am glad the course is over.
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Ni's class. He makes the topic relevant. His lectures are interesting and sometimes very funny. For on line there are regular papers but they help you think about your communication. One of the best GE classes at Foothill. Highly recommended.
During the past twelve months I’ve taken Professor Ni's interpersonal and career communication courses. Professor Ni has a wonderfully personal approach in his teachings, and you can tell he really wants his students to succeed. These are classes you can actually put to use in life. Glad I took them!
Hybrid course, highly recommended, let his material be a door to explore even deeper. I'm an older student/lifelong learner yet found new interests still interesting two years after class. I really like Mr Ni's East-West appreciation with MBA training combined with communication. Pre-nursing requirement with lifelong practical use. Awesome!
He's hard to communicate with & not understanding of honest mistakes. When you take your exams you are not able to review it after it gets graded. Same for writing assignments, once you submit them all you receive is a grade. Not so much as a review of your assignments w./ active comments on specifics so you won't make the same mistake 2 and 3 times.
He is a very knowledgeable and helpful professor. Because of this class my communication has improved especially with my family. Regular homework assignments but reasonable workload as long as you keep up with the class.
First I hate it his class but so far COMM 2 has been the class that I really learn the most. He is serious about education and is always willing to talk to you and help you to do better. He is very demanding but he gives you the tools and direction to get an A. He is a teacher who actually does teach.
When I first took his public speaking class in 2000 I was too shy scared to even let out a whimper in front of a class audience. The first presentation I was supposed to make to the class audience I actually was shaking the whole time. But Prof Ni kept nodding at me to pull through and by the end of the quarter I felt confident enough to speak up
Tough grader, but it is a useful class to take in college.
His assignments are like his lectures, boring. He doesn't take time to work with you if you need help outside of class.
Learned a lot from this class. He's a fair grader and encourages participation. Interesting lectures. Easy exams if you study.
This is a very useful class. Mr Ni communicates online regularly so you feel like you have a real teacher. Some on line classes I don't like but this one I would recommend. Easy class to do well.
Took the hybrid class; Prof Ni is super nice and well educated. He is a professional and expects professionalism. He's funny at times and he relates to students in order to make you understand the material. I got new insights about my communication style. I really felt like I learned a lot and grew from this class. BE ON TIME THOUGH!
Very simple class, weekly open note test and 2 papers, as well as a . Great choice if you are taking this class for GE requirements.
The only comm teacher that I didn't receive an A or B in.(took 2 classes of his) Questions on the quiz are MOSTLY in the textbook and e-lectures. It's very hard to get 100% on the quiz because he words the answers almost identically, or the answer could be many different options. Miss one assignment and you will drop down -/+ a letter grade.
His class is somewhat interesting. There are a lot of papers, almost weekly. He is not very approachable outside of class. Grades down harshly for grammatical errors.
Good class learned a lot. This course is not for slackers. Be ready to keep up and participate.
Don't touch your phone. But makes it easy to follow and applies interpersonal comm to real life. Tests are very easy as long as you understand his lecture.
He gives pretty good lectures and he keeps students engaged by requiring them to participate during lectures. There was almost no substance to the class - Im not sure I learned anything new. But if you had any sort of problems in or outside of class, he seemed very willing to help you in his office hours.
i got a good internship through this course. good class for career prep.
I find it funny that he is a communication teacher who isn't clear in what he wants or in his instructions in general.
Mr. Ni met with me several times after class to discuss how I can improve my grade. Really wants you to do well. His lectures are interesting. Good GE course.
Preston Ni does not explain mistakes made in writing assignments, making it very difficult to improve. In the syllabus it states following his guidelines for a paper will get you an A but hitting all of the required points for an assignment does not even guarantee you a passing grade. As far as tests and quizzes go the material is in the book.
I highly recommend this class to anyone serious about future career success. just the career mentor assignment alone is worth the cost of tuition. Learned much about getting a job and succeeding. Helped with my direction.
This class opened my eyes about gender differences. Easy exams and assignments. Recommended.
Professor Ni's class was a really easy A. Loved the content I just wished he would have provided feedback when he deducted points from my papers. Take this class if you need a GPA boost!
Ni is a wonderful professor from what I have experienced online. The material is easy enough. The reason I gave a 4 rather than 5 is the fact that when he grades writing assignments, he only looks at the length of the assignment. He'll say that there are spelling and grammar errors to hide the fact he's only looking at length.
Prof Ni course very helpful, I found his assignments pretty straightforward and the class discussions in class helped me a lot in understanding the material
I've taken Preston Ni for both online classes and in-person classes, his lecture are worth attending in person. Online is an easy A, straightforward structure and easy to follow.
Prof. Ni was assigned to this class last minute. I would sometimes forget I was taking this class because there were only a handful of assignments. 4 exams, questions directly from the text, two short papers, and an extra credit assignment. It was fine.
Took this class for GE but really glad I did. Practical info for real life. Recommend!
I took his online class where it's very easy. There are online assignments,in-class assignments, and weekly online exam. He is very kind with helping us improve for the next weekly exam by speaking with us in his office after class. I would recommend taking this class!
Very detailed when explaining lectures even using his own story as an example. We have a test every Sunday and it's not difficult if you just read the chapters he assigned every week. Does take attendance and grade you on participation. Also, we only have 2 writing assignments and are very straightforward.
This class was awesome and the textbook was so good that I learned a lot from it and all the reading chapters are from the quiz. Extra Credit is assigned and everyone should take advantage of it. Lastly, he gives great feedback on assignments and quizzes are a piece of cake. Take him and you'll love the class and lecture
Majority of grade is based on the exams and writing assignments. The textbook is used frequently for exams, so purchase the textbook. The speeches in class were informal. You're assigned to a group of three and read the answers word for word to the Q's he assigns us to answer. Try to make a friend in class, he's not much help if you missed work.
I wish Prof. Nis communication skills were as good as he thinks they are. Apart from the two large writing assignments, the class is super easy. He did not have the students work on their own communication at all - instead, we had to write responses to his in-class questions and then read them word-for-word to our classmates.
Very organized class. Easy to follow instructions. Nice instructor reply to questions quickly. Easy extra credit.
He is a nice professor and his lecture is really accessible outside class, which does solve some of the problems in my real life. He is funny when he explains some ideas or demonstrates how the conversation works. His test is super easy, the only thing you need to do is to read the textbook and the questions are exactly the same from contents.
Definitely would not suggest taking COMM10 with Professor Ni He doesn't respond to your questions, doesn't give feedback on your work so you know what to improve on, and grades super slow. Also doesn't let you view the questions on what you get wrong on a test so you can actually learn. One of worst classes I have took.
Enjoyed taking this class. Really made me think about communication issues. Interesting topics and discussions and friendly professor who communicates regularly. Pretty easy exams if you read ahead.
This is a great class to take. Reasonable amount of work interesting topics. Surprised how much i learned. Nice instructor recommend.
This class was very interesting, you'll learn a lot. Very easy to keep up with, not much work. Very manageable if you're a busy person. He also responds to you right away.
Solid teacher. I really liked this guy and he really wants his students to learn and succeed. There is a good amount of tests/projects, but they're manageable. If you put in the work, you can get a good grade.
I really enjoyed this guy's class. Not too much homework and I actually learned a lot from his class that I apply to my life. It is easy to get an A as well.
Great professor but his rules on his essays are very confusing. If you want an A be prepared to double the required words for the paper
Initially this class was a bit confusing, but once you get used to the work schedule, it becomes manageable. There is typically only one assignment due a week whether that be a discussion, exam, or paper. The papers were probably the most difficult, but as long as you follow the rubric and every instruction, you are sure to get a good grade.
Very easy class! No stress, I really enjoyed it and I learned a lot. He answers emails very quickly, however, do not text him via Canvas, only direct emails.
Honestly an extremely easy class and professor. Test are based exactly from the textbook and all assignments are open note and textbook. Just be sure to address the prompt directly and be literate in your responses.
He takes points off without providing direct feedback. Says in weekly announcements that it's because of lack of originality or errors.. But the textbook and lectures provided are littered with errors and redundancy. No extra credit -- no missing a due date ever. So missing a few here and there really adds up. No way to improve with no feedback.
I can honestly say that profesor Ni has influence my life He is one of the best motivational and encouraging individuals I have ever met. Thank you Professor Ni
Very straightforward class. All the work was organized and instructions for assignments were clear and direct. I had no issues with the material being difficult. He took points off and stated it was due to grammatical errors. Like any other course, this is a college-level course that requires college-level writing. The work load was manageable.
Professor Ni is next level (as in good!) Class is very structured and timed by schedule. A little heavier on the quiz/text side, but nothing extreme and it's all open book, open notes. Overall, this class is a fantastic class to take if you need a required GE and/or if you're a Comms major. Highly recommend for an A+
Easy class. All you need to do for an A is read the textbook, participate in class discussions, and tests are open book. The textbook used is an open source one, so it's free. The entire class is online, asynchronous, so you can do the work anytime you want.
Watch for spelling mistakes and/or grammatical errors. Even casual, class discussion posts were heavily graded on punctuation and spelling. Took decent amount of points off for small errors, such as not including hyphenations on certain words or incorrect comma placement. Use a spell check program before submitting anything. Easy assignments.
Very clear on assignment instructions. Watch out for spelling and grammar. He takes a good amount of points off for any small error such as a missing comma. I would use docs/words to proofread & would still get points marked off? Reply to every part of the question he asks for/go in depth, to avoid point deductions. He is a tough grader.
Workload light but writing MUST be proofread & college level. You'll tately get all points on a disc post. Doesn't allow edits so can't revise what you turn in. Very strict about AI & very picky about submission formats! You have to buy txtbook, only physical book is available, & tests + hw are based from text. No essays. He's fine. Easy-ish A.
Decent professor who makes COMM10 manageable. Textbook-heavy, but tests are straightforward. I found Unstuck study helpful for quick review before exams. Just make sure to follow formatting rules and you'll likely land an easy A.
This class is easy and straight forward. Attendance is mandatory with this class and will help with your grade. The assignments for this class were weekly short exams and he would provide the materials we would be getting the answers from which was very easy. His lectures are interesting and beneficial.
Professor Ni was okay. The only thing is there were no makeups or leniency at all for assignments. If you are focused and have more time to be a student, his class is fine. If you need a professor to be flexible and understanding of your busy personal life, he is not for you.
