She goes REALLY slllooowwww.... so the class is easy. Slack all the way. My only complaint is her final exam. she said there were going to be questions on Native Am tribes and guess what... there was not a single question. She gave something about the characters in the stories instead. Easy class
This class is boring, she reads notes straight from the book. NO TESTS!! 3 papers, 1 research paper. Grades fairly.
probably one of the nicest and fairest english teacher's i ever had. work in class is easy, just read the book and write the assignments(keep them, they r 4 a grade at the end of term). very open, easy to talk to u can't really go wrong in her class, u can pretty much write about anything u want.
This woman confused the heck out of me. The class was about 10% Native American lit, and the exam was 75% NA lit!? If you like Indians and REALLY SLOW CLASSES this course will suit you. If you want to learn, take this class from someone else.
The class is really not that bad. She doesnt give you very long to write the papers though. Very strict on attendance. Make sure you do the reading and write down the homework. She will randomly collect it. You can pretty much write on anything. Overall, fairly easy.
nice, classwork and homework are easy, doesn't grade harshly on the papers
If you need a class in multiculturalism take it.This is not a class for an English/humanities major. Major authors and themes are left out.
Good content and great class discussions. I wasn't expecting a HUGE chunk American Literature to be about Native Americans but it was still semi interesting. Bias teacher, but do all the assignments and read every night and you'll be fine.
She liked native american lit... which i really don't, but she was a good teacher and the work was bearable and understandable
She is very nice and helpful. You can always go to her and talk to her not only about your problems in her class but any problems you may have and she will listen and try to help. She defenitely grades her essays fair.
Totally unclear about what is on finals. Class "converstations" have nothing to do with readings.
Ms. Perry is a very nice lady. However, if you're looking to keep your GPA up, do not take her class. I had A's in all my classes (which where sciences) and a B in her class. Views on papers, are, afterall, opinions. It's a very racially heated class and if you're not into that..then don't take her!
she's nice but the topics in class are not really geared towards anything. but easy nonetheless. if you have to take english, take her.
I liked her. Shes fair in her grading and helpful when you have problems. I liked her class overall its not too boring. Study for her final though, shes not too clear about whats on it.
I am taking this class TeleTechnet at a satellite location. She has no idea how to use the technology. Gives NO feedback on assignments-no rubric on grading-VERY racially motivated class-Short Story. I was not expecting so many off the wall authors-I am more intersted in the classic short story authors. They are hardly touched on. NOT Recommende
She is a good teacher and her topics are interesting. I did great on all my papers but earned a D in her class because she graded homework which was based on our opinions. If you hate a lot of simple hw assignments do not take her class.
Took the American lit class, read and participated, got a D. She randomly collects homework of stories we haven't discussed in many class periods. She reads the stories at the same time the class does. you could probably read better stories and do way less total bs work in any other American lit class.
Overall her class is simple if you do your homework. She discusses the stories in class, but she randomly collects homework and gives quizzes. If you just do the homework, you'll be fine!
Notes r mini books read n class, put on BB afterward. HW randomly collected & random quizzes given (especially if a lot of ppl r absent) so U MUST READ EVERTHING. Crazy midterm and final. Attendance is a must, retarded policies, Make Up work: HA! UNLESS U HAD A NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE DONT COUNT ON IT! IF U VALUE UR GPA... DONT DO IT 2 YOURSELF!!!
Perry should be a high school teacher because she assigns so much ridiculous homework. If she doesn't like the way a student analyzes literature then it's wrong. Her class is pointless & the majority of stories read & analyzed were stories students had read DURING high school. She expects the responses to her questions to be VERY in-depth & lengthy
DONT TAKE HER! she gives homework everynight and randomly collects it, so you pretty much have to do it. She also gives random quizzes on the readings. She is kind of a tough grader too. If you want your GPA to drop take her...
She wasn't very hard, although attedance is very important. All you really have to do is read the material and come to class and you should be okay, yet I did this and still got a C- minus so who knows.
She was a very good teacher. Homework every night but easy and if she likes you, you will get an A...also understanding but overall good teacher!
Her tests were monsters! She graded stricter then necc.
Her useless opinions and lack of knowledge made this class suck. Plus, she talks about how minorities are still so disadvantaged. I am one and I was sick of listening to her! I think her class is more of a cry session than lecture.
She wasn't very professional at all. She was late almost every day and then instead of taking responsibility for her own actions she would blame it on the elevator. I was sick of hearing her after just the first day of the semester.
She was very nice. You have to go to her class because you discuss the homework from the night before. Papers are easy. She's pretty chill. I do agree with the person who said she blamed the elevator. She's late EVERY DAY.
Ms. Perry is very difficult to please. She gives homework almost every night. She says that if you just try she'll go easy on you, but that's not true. You pretty much have to write exactly what she is thinking in order to get a good grade. She also gave a quiz the day before spring break and waited until right after break to give the midterm.
doesn't take homework that is handwritten and collects homework randomly as well as having random quizzes.
Ms. Perry focused very much, if not completely, on pieces of literature only pertaining to minorities. I'm a minority and was tired of hearing about it after a few weeks. I would have liked a broader sampling of work- as it is American Literature. Homework is given out and collected at random. A's in all other classes, not so much in hers.
Ridiculous teacher. Focused on slave stories (she is black). Really boring. Extremely strict grading. takes points off if you printer runs out of ink. hard midterm and final. dont take her. horrible.
Prof. Perry was a wonderful teacher. Naturally she gave homework every night (she didn't alwayss tell you, but it was on the syllabus). She collects homework at random (so have it ready and typed). No excuses fly here. Papers were easy enough. I never had much interest in English before, but I Enjoyed this class, some of the reading was dry.
Prof. Perry is a good professor.Throughout the class, minorities are the basis for her teachings; i think. Make sure you do the assignments and type them.Do not skip her class because attendance is a must.Classes are more of discussions than teaching.Random quizzes are given and the tests aren't that bad. Be specific and answer clearly for tests
A lot of people said they hated her but I actually loved this class. She is strict but she tells you everything upfront. All your homework has to be typed and you have to be thorough on your tests and quiz if you read then you should be fine. She gives extra credit opportunities because she doesn't accept any late work.every class was a discussion
She was wonderful. I loved her. The material was very interesting and class was very interesting I never wanted to miss class! She was super nice. The midterm wasnt hard at all I easily made an A
Princess Perry is the least credible English teacher I've had. She's just not a well-spoken teacher, and her sentences are generally train wrecks. She just doesn't command a large vocabulary, and it's kinda embarrassing. Not an edifying class.
Its all minority writing...
Princess Perry is a wonderful teacher - i had her for 110 and i purposely took her again for 144. As long as you buy the one text, do your homework and participate in answering her questions in class, which is what your supposed to be doing as a student anyway, then you will get an A. if i get the chance i will take her again.
Yeah...not sure what all the negative reviews on here are about. I found Prof. Perry to be a fairly easy grader. You have to type homework, which is annoying, but if you participate in class you will do well.
If your not minority, she will not like you very much. she grades very hard and wont even look at your homework if it is not typed. I missed a test because of a conference and made me go to the omsbud, even the omsbud (when i mentioned perry was my professor) rolled her eyes and said she didnt expect anything else from her.
She is a great professor for the intro to creative writing class. She helps pull the inner writer out of everyone. We sat in a circle everyday and discussed our writing and towards the end of the semester we were sort of like a family. I'm not sure how effective she would be in other teaching settings but I would definitely recommend her for 300
Professor Perry is a great professor. Her class is NOT easy but if you follow her directions you can be successful. Homework is a huge part of this course along with many quizzes. Overall an enjoyable course.
Not the best professor. Picky grader when it comes to the short story and play. Surprisingly hard to get an A. I wouldn't recommend taking her!
I loved Ms. Perry's 114 class so much that I took her again for 211. Her assignments are never hard, just do your homework and you will pass. Occasional quizzes, but their either easy or open book. Some assignments seem pointless, but make for an easy A. I definitely recommend her.
Princess Perry is EASILY my favorite teacher at ODU. She's very helpful and she loves to teach, she will stay after to answer questions and answers e-mails promptly. she also has a good sense of humor and awesome dreads, i gave her a red hot chilli pepper ;). so yea she's good looking and a great teacher, i took two classes w/ her
Another good ODU professor good at what she does very passionate about English. Do your homework and you are guaranteed a good grade! Requires good deal of reading every night! But it's easy literature!
She is a horrible teacher lectures about pointless things and does not capture what the course is about if you don't think just like her you are screwed. stay away if you can she is a total nut case!!!!
Ms. Perry is a great professor. She gives a lot of homework and its important to not skip out on a single assignment. Her final was super easy it came straight from the midterm. Overall shes a favorite
She is a great teacher! She's helpful, funny, and nice. Just be sure to do the nightly homework and you will be fine. DO NOT SKIP CLASS OR THE READING. She doesn't take late work, unless you practically got ran over right before class. She loves literature so you will learn a lot from her. Be prepared to write at least three papers. Get the text!
Eng 114 This could be a really good class but her way of teaching it is not for everyone. Way too many assignments for a 100 level course. By the end of the semester all the assignments, quizzes and papers combine totaled nearly 2,000 points ridiculous. Assignments, Readings (mini-essays) due every class. Quiz every week and 4 major papers
Regardless of the "smiley face" I dislike Prof P. Makes you sit in a circle and tries to make you a "family." Too enthusiastic, a little annoying. Picks on shy students, forces participation. Work isn't hard, class very easy. I like her class more than I like her as a prof. Must read the book or else she gives pop quizzes. Decent class.
Awesome teacher! She gives homework and is a fair grader. Very easy to participate in class, she encourages it. She has conferences before you turn in the final draft of your paper so she can read it and help you work out whatever kinks she thinks there is to make your paper better and to give you a higher grade. Loved her as a professor!
I had her for American lit and I loved the class. all the work was out of the book and the reading was interesting. class participation is easy and encouraged. the only thing I didn't like about the class was that she randomly collected the hw and had pop quizzes when she feels the class hasn't read so BE PREPARED AND ALWAYS DO THE WORK/READING!!!
You have a few papers to write, but she lets you pick whatever topic you want, which makes it a whole lot easier. No tests, but attendance is pretty mandatory. Readings are kind of long, but as along as you answer the questions the best you can you get a 100. Easy A, would take again.
Not many tests, DO THE HOMEWORK!! clear rubric for writing paper and various resources, a lot of reading, you will need the book, a lot of class discussion, condescending, sarcastic, sometimes admits that she wakes up on the wrong side of the bed & is still rude. don't text in class! Knows what she's talking about.. wouldn't take her again though
Ms. Perry is a very scattered women. She takes a while to grade things but over all is awesome. The papers I wrote are things that I actually cared about and helped me learn and better myself overall. She grades all papers first then hands them back and if you get below an 85 you can redue what you got wrong and earn back full credit. Take her!
Mrs. Perry is a great English teacher. she only asks that you do all homework assignments or it will affect your grade in the end. she old assigns 3 papers, and a final research paper. Theres no way you can fail if you complete everything on time.
Professor Perry gets right to the chase. Her papers are clear cut of what she wants and if you need help, it's there if you want it from her. Not a heavy work load in the class. It was a fun class, and if you want a teacher that is clear cut and right to the chase I'd suggest taking Perry.
Loved this teacher! Here are the basics. 3 smaller papers 750 words each, you pick the topic. 1 research paper counted as your final 2500 words. Two extra credit opportunities. Some hw but not alot. If you particpate you will do well in her class. She lets you correct your papers if you score below an 85. Great teacher all around
Professor Perry gives lots of help on assignments but gives LOTS of mandatory textbook homework, typed and printed to receive credit. Class discussions are pretty interesting though and presentation days are fun. She counts absences so..
Professor Perry is amazing, she is very nice and knows her class can be hard at times so she gives plenty of extra credit opportunities as well as help with essays and homework. Very understanding and give lots of time to take exams. Class is mandatory but she cancels quite a few times so it made it better in ways. Lots of reading and a little hard
Nice woman, not so great teaching. Very disorganized. NEVER grades anything. All quizzes are pop. Assigns a reading and gives you questions. Some readings are difficult to understand which is why you always talk about them in class if she doesn't cancel last second, but she grades homework for accuracy before you discuss the reading so it hurts you
The class is strictly reading stories and answering questions. In class, you discuss the homework that was due. She grades harshly and really wants to hear your voice in class. There aren't any tests, just the homework, a midterm paper, final paper, and project that reflects on the class.
Takes forever to grade assignments. You read at least two stories a night, around 10-25 pages, then you must answer 3-5 questions for the reading. They are opinion based questions, but if your opinion is not hers, youre wrong. DO NOT SKIP CLASS. Some pop quizzes, again opinion based. Just dont take her, pick a different professor.
It's a college level Literature class. Expect to read a short story and answer 3-5 analytical questions before each class and you're golden. Point blank: show up, do the homework, participate, have an open mind and you'll be golden. College courses are designed to make you think and bring you out of your comfort zone. Prof Perry does just that.
She is awesome! Show up, participate, do the readings, do the discussion board and move on with your life. Don't bother get the textbook, all the stories you can find online via pdf. Super easy course. I got a 110%
Prof. P is someone you need to learn how to take -- her demeanor can come off strong, but she knows her content. Her critiques on homework can be tough, but she has clear expectations and does not accept work that is less than stellar. You will need to earn your grade in this class and participate -- she won't let you slide without participating.
She's kind of condescending with the way she talks. The topic for papers are really vague and she doesn't do a good job at explaining them. She grades homework on accuracy not completion so beware of that. Overall, I dreaded going to that class everyday.
I love Professor Perry! I am unsure why her rates are low. She makes class interactive & interesting. Of course there's homework, but it's college English what do you expect? There's 4 essays throughout the course 3 during the semester & one for the final. I would definitely recommend her to anyone and I plan on taking her for Literature!
She was awesome, she can forget to posts things at times so you'll have to remind her. Compared to other English professors at ODU she is one of the better ones.
Mrs. Perry was a wonderful teacher. The class starts a little rough, but as you learn how to incorporate more arguments into your papers, the flow becomes easier and the class is more enjoyable. I was able to use what I learned in this class in 2 other ones. The papers are manageable and almost fun because you can choose what to write about.
Professor Perry's class was very interesting and it was fun getting involved in the lectures. She's a fun, caring teacher and is always in a good mood. She also takes questions throughout the whole class and makes sure everyone understands. Class is cancelled about six times for conferences with students, and there are four main papers.
Idk why she has so many good reviews, she is an amazing person but she is a terrible professor. Homework that is pointless, constant reading of the textbook, and she is not very clear. Always all over the place, lectures are pointless in my opinion but you can not skip more then 6 times or you fail the class. Really do not recommend her:(
Princess Perry is a great person and professor. Her classes are very educational and to the point of fiction. She drops writing nuggets throughout the entire class and motivates students to write how they talk until they learn how to move through a more advanced world of writing. It's a two part class: reading works and student workshops.
Professor Perry is an amazing professor. She explains thoroughly what needs to be done in order to be successful in this course. She does call on students a lot during class, and her class sizes tend to be small compared to some other lectures. There are lots of papers but she is generally an easy grader. Attendance is mandatory!!
Does no respond to emails. Constantly gives zeros for assignments you do even if they are on time. If for some reason she does respond to the email its to direct you to something completely different and non helpful.
Puts zeros as placeholders in the gradebook and forgets about it. Gives arbitrary zeros even when assignments are turned in, and then does not respond to emails asking questions about grades. No organization to speak of. I still have ungraded assignments from 7 weeks ago.
Nice lady. She explains the material thoroughly and is more than happy to keep explaining if you dont get it. If you miss 3 classes you fail (department rule). She teaches from the textbook, which isn't as boring as you think. Lots of in class participation. She takes weeks to grade though and she posts the work at random times which is annoying.
I had her for two classes here at ODU and I loved them both. While I am not a huge fan of English, she made the classes fun and worth coming to. I feel like I gained a lot from her class. She seems very passionate about what she does and cares about her students. Good luck !
I took her class my sophomore year and she's the reason I didn't make deans list. We were discussing topics for a paper and she said my topic wasn't that great. I met with her and she said I should keep the topic because I can do good with it. She help me build my paragraphs then proceeds to give me a D on the paper. Would not recommend
New reading with either a discussion board or a quiz weekly. 4 other projects throughout the semester. I spent about 2 hours a week on this class and got an A. You can probably get away with not buying the book. Everything you read is a popular story or play. Grades take a while to come back.
The reading material was short (poems, short stories, etc.) and the grading was fair. The only complaint is that some of the projects (3 total) the directions were a little hard to understand.
If you are looking for a easy grade, then take her. Just dont miss any assignments or turn them in late.
Few assingments so if you miss one that effects you alot. Doesnt respond to messages and takes forever to grade but when you turn a assignment in late thats 10% like h0 let me take 10% out your paycheck for not doing you job.
