This guys a bit crazy, was a decent economics prof
No Comments
the worst prof ever!!!!!!!!!!
Extremely Funny. Better for 300 level courses than intro. He makes economics interesting and straightforward. If you like economics, you will love Arya!! The best economics prof at SMU.
funny guy, lots of MC. my friends who take eco electives hunt this guy down. i would too if i didn't hate economics
This guy is great, he gives you time in class to work out problems in the book which really helps you, his tests are straight forward and as long as you know your stuff and go to class it is easy to get a good mark in his class.
He makes subject easy for students to learn
Very interesting class. Tough but useful. Learn basic tools of economics. Treats every one fairly
Get the hell out of his class, the notes he puts on the board are like chicken scratch completly unreadible he talks to the board and has such a strong accent you dont understand what he is saying, extremly unhelpful and has no people skills what so ever!!!!!!!!!!!!
He has an accent but it is not too difficult to undestand. And he does write a lot of notes but they really helped me out a lot. You just have to make sure you are paying attention.
jackass
very easy to get along with... understanding about missing classes etc... as long as you pay attention he's not hard to understand... gives lots of time to work out problems in class... lots of assignments, making it easier to get a good mark
If you can teach yourself, then he's an easy teacher, if you need to ask questions to understand then don't chose him.
Wow, he is soooo random. His notes are all over the place, you can't make him out at all and his open book assignments are even hard my table all got avg 75 on them, how does that happen??? DO NOT TAKE
Very easy workload
Oh dear lord why didn't i switch when i had the chance? You can't understand what hes saying, and when you ask him a question he doesn't really answer it as much as bring in other asspects that make you more confused. Theres not a lot of work but that also means you don't really have a chance to make a good grade unless you do amazing on the exams
good teacher. gives lots of notes. tests are repetitive so its pretty easy. his accent isnt that bad, teaches right from the book. easy workload, only 2 assignments.
Wow, such a bad prof. Don't listen to any of the good reviews on this site. Yeah he only gives two assignments, but to do good in his class you actually have to teach yourself. Everything is out of the book, but if you're the type who likes to have notes on the subject don't take him.. cause you can't unerstand him or his notes!
Arya is the man lol he can crack some good jokes and make ya like comming to the class but once "class" starts look out cause its boringa and after the midterm u really wont learn a thing!
What a brutal prof. he's all over the place and tells the stupidist jokes that at first ppl laughed at because they pittied him and now he doesn't even get the sympathy laugh whatever he should be fired.
Arya is the man
funny guy, bad teacher, all text, a lot of do it youself (do you like to do it yourself)
The worst prof I have ever had in my entire life. The only thing he has going for him are his Grade A outfits and his hilarious jokes. Do not take this man. I got a C in his class... The lowest mark I've had so far.
Possibly the greatest prof. ever! Arya made my economics experience great and the exam was awesome. All mutiple choice and has some great outfits!
Nice as a person, hard to understand at first. Not a hard class as long as you take the time out to teach yourself, because he sure doesn't teach you! Multiple choice tests, final exam was brutal.
Although the course itself is challenging, he always goes around when it's time for in-class assignments or class exercises. All his tests and assignments are in multiple choice format. Scores in your in-class assignments don't matter, as long as you answer them and keep a perfect attendance, you'll get 10 easy points for your final grade.
Will not help you if you go to his office. The reason that he assigns marks for attendance is so that he does not have to explain stuff to students during office hours. This guy is very funny. Not the best educator. Everything multiple choice in 2 classes I have taken with this guy.
Very had to understand this man. this was the very first course/prof I ever had as a 1st Year university student and it scared me to death. The course ended up not being too hard, but this man cannot teach. He doesn't explain anything and he's hard to understand.
Not too much of a workload(2 assignments,2 midterms, 1final)but he had a really strong accent and he didnt explain things that well.He was nice but I had trouble understanding his graphs he always drew.
What a horrible class, I was looking forward to this class at the start of the semester but it was painful to sit through a whole class. He is hard to understand and just writes on the board all class. I didn't bother taking notes for the 2nd half of the semester because they are not very helpful!. Just read the book and you will do fine.
If you listen, take notes and study you'll do very good on this course. Plus he is very clear on what's going to be on the exams. About his accent- he speaks 5 languages, how many languages people who complain about his accent speak? one?!
easy class...study the assignments...all midterms are m.c. nad most questions are taking directly from the assignment...jokes about his triple bipass surgery so all in all a great guy!
A bit hard to understand
He is difficult to understand.
Arya really isn't bad. If you read the textbook and go to class you will do well. ALL questions are multiple choice which is a plus. My friends have other profs for 1201 and they have to write out answers. The MC's aren't easy but they are definitley not overly difficult if you study. I would take this prof again if I had the choice.
ECON 301 wasn't the easiest material for me as a mature student but I finished with a B. I can honestly say that he is the reason I decided to major in Economics. I had no problem understanding him. His exams were based on what he taught in class. No trick questions etc. The secret...go to class, read the book, study a bit. A OR B for sure.
Another good semester. Arya is a bit moody, but when he is in a good mood it is a great class. All questions are MC, watch for repeats too. I would recommend him. With a minimal amount of work (it will take some work though) you can do very well in this class. I was suprised the class average was only about 65% because A's are very easy to achieve.
nice professor. the class itself is not that easy. Although his m/c midterms are not easy, they are not that hard. they have some repetitive questions from the take home assignments and in class assignments, so definatly study those. i think its easier to get a better mark in his class then in most other professors for econ.
This prof is useless & a horrible professor, if you go to his office hours (which are only about 30mins a day) he will just say only 4 words to you 'Go to the tutor'. He is not willing to help you & he is extremely hard to understand & my words of advise if you have this prof get out of his class FAST & if you have the choice do not take his class!
Was in the class one day and could barely understand him. Very thick accent. I'm sure he is very educated in the subject and is a good prof if you understand him. He also tries to crack jokes about celebrities, but few laughed because the rest didn't understand the joke!
I was very interested in taking Micro when I came to SMU. I LOVED Economics in highschool and looked forward to taking it here at SMU. I'll never take another Economics class now. He was very unclear a lot of the times, and you couldn't ask him questions because he either told you to see him afterclass or his answers were very unclear.

He is the best prof I have had so far. He makes you no pressures in class, I love it.He is awesome.
Awful. Unless you have no option, avoid this professor. Teaches to the board, not the class. Refuses to accept the fact that he is wrong sometimes. Unclear almost always. Did well in the class but that's my good work not his.
Intermediate Micro.. I took this class about 10 years ago and have to say I am shocked that he received some negative comments. As a C student I was able to get an A in his class. He simply drills the info into your head. If you take notes and study them, you will ace the class. You will soon find your self thinking economics with an accent. :)
One of the best professors I have had so far. Very friendly, funny, father figure like. He enjoys teaching, and makes coming to class worth it. Helpful in-class assignments, and makes the tests easy to understand.
He's pretty good. His english is a little difficult to understand though. Sort of funny. Fairly nice, although can be a bit rude in private. Definition of an average prof. (His tests are wordy and somewhat difficult). Worked my tail off and will probably only get an A- or so.
Hard to understand what he's saying, alright course though.
I can't believe theres actually negative comments on here. He is by far the best proff i had this year. Tests are also very easy. I saw him a while ago, a good month after my class with him was done and he remembered me, not a lot of proffs would. Awesome guy. Hilarious too.
Very hard to understand. Notes are extremely unorganized. Better off using powerpoints which he doesnt teach with that are on the p drive and the text book.
he is such a nice man.I was with him for macro.from what i hear he enjoys mirco better and was more interesting in that course... he will do anything he can to help. he is great with extensions
I try to keep an open mind but this professor teaches to the board, and is very hard to follow. Attendance in mandatory, but it's pointless because you learn nothing in class. Best bet is to read the text, and look at power points.
Difficult course made more difficult by his teaching. A bit all over the place. Assignments and tests are not too hard though so it's not so bad. Funny guy.
Notes are hard to follow, and when asked a question he gets very angry that you don't understand.. I would go with Salah for both ECON 1205, 1206
Hilarious guy. always making celebrity references. the most interesting part of this class is his brightly colored suits. thick accent but you will understand if you read the text book before class.
Guys wicked. follow ur notes and read the chapters and ull get an A. All tests are MC and exam is short
The best professor I have had at Saint Mary's so far. He is very clear with explanations and makes sure you are well prepared for examinations. Assignments are very valuable in helping understand the material. Professor Arya makes economics a very interesting course.
The best professor I have had at Saint Mary's. He is very well education and makes economics easy to understand. He has always been willing to help out with any concerns or problems. No surprises on examinationsa nd he makes sure students are well prepared for them.
He means well, but he talks to his board the entire class. Going to class everyday, taking notes and paying attention doesn't really pay off at all.
This guy is a total goofball, his celebrity references are quite lame and his various colours of suits worries me for his own personal interests. with all this said his class is not that hard but you have to read the textbook because he doesn't teach you many useful things.
The textbook is god in this class. All multiple choice assessments, often coming straight from the book, so memorize that thing. Class is pretty damn boring, but I think if you read the book, you'll get a lot of the m/c right based on recognition alone.
Great prof
Very friendly but hard to follow along most of the time.
Prof Arya was a fantastic professor for my first semester of university. His assignment's and midterm's were easy and there was no surprise. He does talk to the board a lot sometimes which can be annoying to some and confuse them. Hes very kind and you will learn from him. He helped me decide to major in econ!
Really sweet man but not a great prof. Class is very boring and very confusing. He is very kind to each student and makes an effort to smile and say hi to individual students. Assessments are all multiple choice but the wording is extremely confusing. 9% of your mark comes just from attendance which is nice. Love him as a person but not as a prof.
Dr. Arya's class is quite boring, however all assessments were extremely fair and relatively easy. They are all multiple choice and many of the questions from assignments and in class work appear on the midterms and the final. I would highly recommend taking this professor over many of the others that I have heard horror stories about.
Dr. Arya's lectures are very boring and time drags on, but his assignments and exams make up for it. Almost everything was multiple choice, and lots of the exam questions come directly from the assignments. I would definitely recommend taking your economic classes with him.
Hard to understand at times just kind of rambles on but a nice guy and is the easiest of the economics profs. But you need to read your textbook cause hes got no clue at times.
Hard to understand, but funny, very easy, rambles on and you will probably use your textbook
plz dont take his course he is terrible.
Such a nice man! Definitely one of the better and more approachable professors I've met. Very funny and cares about his individual students. When dropping an assignment off to his office he took the time to ask how I felt about the course and if I was doing well in my personal life, which I thought was very sweet.
Extremely helpful towards all students and honestly one of the funniest prof's I have had. Little confusing at times, but he goes over everything again and it always makes sense the second time. Use the textbook and a good grade will come out of it!
Quite possibly one of the worst profs I've ever had. He's incredibly difficult to understand, his classes are very confusing and he is extremely unhelpful if you have any questions. He will make fun of you if you leave early, no matter the reason, and makes you talk to his tutor instead of him should you take the time to go see him.
Great professor, if you can get past the accent then you will easily be able to learn from him, all of his in class notes are clear and hes very good at explaing what matters.
Professor Arya is a very good prof. Out of a class of nearly 100, he ensured that he learned everyone's name and made an effort to talk to you individually while he assigned questions to work on. Dr. Arya has a very good sense of humor as well, easily the funniest prof I've had. Just make sure you show up to his class as he does track attendance.
Dr. Arya was fantastic, wish he was my prof for all of my economics courses
Dr. Arya is a good prof, takes a vested interest in every individual and makes them feel at home. But.... his classes are incredibly boring. The text is a must, read the text and you'll do fine.
You'll know what to expect on your midterm and finals if you go to class and do the NON GRADED in class assignments. The midterm and final is based off them and the main focuses of the class. Had him for micro and macro and loved him.
Arya didn't have the best accent, after a while you will get used to it. But, his lectures are everywhere, he could be writing something on the board and it will be completely unrelated to what's on the powerpoint.
Arya is a low key savage. The guy casually tears people apart and they don't even realize it. His lectures were somewhat entertaining for this reason only. The class itself was extremely boring tho. He's all over the place and his writing is really messy, hard to follow. Also don't bother asking questions he'll just make you feel stupid.
Hard to understand, heavy accent. VERY lecture heavy, gets extremely boring at times and hard to pay attention. If you can choose another prof, I would do so. He's a really nice guy, he's just hard to learn from. A lot of people found this class challenging because of him.
Professor Arya has a very boring teaching style and usually goes straight from textbook power points during lectures. Attendance is mandatory, Arya adds and extra 10% to your final mark if you attend all classes. Arya has a couple assignments that come right from the textbook so they are easy to complete. The midterm and final are quite easy.
While Professor Arya is humorous it is very difficult to understand him during lectures as he had a very thick accent. He isn't a tough marker but his teaching style is strictly lectures that are all over the place and hard to follow.
Lectures were so painfully boring and unclear that I stopped going to his classes soon after they started. I read the textbook, did the assignments and essentially taught myself the material. I walked into the final exam and Arya called me out in front of everyone for never attending his classes and said a sarcastic "good luck!" I got a C+ ;)
Goodluck trying to understand his lectures. Such a nice guy but you can barely understand what he is saying the majority of the time and his notes are all over the place. Assignments are too difficult neither was midterm, final was more difficult just make sure you read the text book and his powerpoints. Stay Away!
He is extremely hard to follow in class, his notes on the board are confusing and all over the place. He also refuses to use Brightspace. His questions on assignments are worded in a difficult and convoluted way, and answers to those question are not common sense. Read the textbook or you will fail this class.
Taking micro-econ with him has been horrible. A subject that seems like it should be based purely around common sense has been such a hard concept to grasp. He manages to make simple topics 100x harder. His accent is barely understandable and you can forget trying to follow along with what he's writing on the board.
I won't lie, at first his class may seem boring. If economics isn't your thing then it will be. But, credit where credit is due, it was a relatively straight forward class, he taught the material and I understood it. He has a thick accent but you will be able to understand him after the first week, and he cares about how you do. There are worse.
All around great guy
Very unforgiving & draws out lectures for very long times. Not entertaining in the slightest and makes the course heavily reliant on you to figure things out yourself as lectures can be confusing.
Hard to comprehend content, accent is very thick. Basically teaching the course myself.
Going into this class I had previously taken two economics courses. Without these courses I would be struggling biiiig time. His notes are nonsensical - writing random pieces of information at different parts of the board. Focuses on memorization and not understanding. :(
Gives a lot of in-class assignments and quizzes that aren't worth anything but a study guide. 10% of grade is going to class but his lectures are really dry and hard to pay attention to. Would recommend reading the book and playing with the online connect available, it's an easy A if you use your resources, but wouldn't recommend the prof.
super messy writing, hard to understand, makes you feel stupid if you ask a question, does no marking all scantron tests, still uses out dated p drive for lectures because "the internet is bad". In short this class was the biggest waste of my time and money I have ever had.
Easy class, all multiple choice and 40% of the mark is attendance and take home work. If you decide to go to class for the 10% you'll see some of his famous roasts on the students.
Dr. Arya isn't the worst professor I've ever had. He's a bit difficult to understand initially, but if you are good at note taking it's not a hard class to master. The questions on midterms and finals are near identical to the ones in the assignments. You could do a lot worse.
Assignments are identical to exams. Answers to assignments are in the text. if you read the book and do practice question you'll be fine. lectures are difficult to understand but he tries to help you if you're struggling by giving extra points. makes it easy to pass the class.
He is an ok professor. It really confusing at first but when you get used to it, it become easier. You should read your text book for better understanding. He have a distinct teaching style. He used a lot of graph which is good. But sometimes, his lecture is confusing. He is a good person, if you get to know him it will be better for you.
The legend has retired. Oh my god what a guy he was, super funny for sure. He's so old-school, which was kinda annoying but I understand. He has an interesting wardrobe full of beautiful colors.
