Explicitly states that they don't go over all the material on the exams. Lots of weekly quizzes that are simple but often don't match up with lecture. This class is not difficult material, but it is made a lot harder when this professor literally tries to confuse you.
He gives a total of four quizzes per week, three of which are about what was covered during each class and one about what was learned over the week. He also goes over any problems you have as long as there is time left in class.
I have never struggled in a class more in my life. Dr. Pye does not go over specifc examples in the course materials. I taught myself all of the course material. He over complicates things.
Professor Pye is very hard to reach unless you go to his Office hours(never answers emails). There's a little bit of a language barrier he has an unusual accent and his lectures especially online were very hard to follow. Must put the work in, go to office hours and do practice problems in order to do well. Many lecture and weekly quizzes.
I did struggle in Dr. Pye Aungs class, but I am not the greatest at math. Overall he is a nice guy and will help you out if you ask. He is hard to reach over email, so I would ask questions during class. You have 3 weekly zoom quizzes (which are easy its just questions about lectures) and 1 test. There are 3 exams and 1 final.
Honestly was grateful for that C because the participation bump and replacing the lowest mid term with your final help a lot! I didn't pay attention at all when I first started and I was struggling, so I started to bust my ass off and it worked out. You got to pay attention in class and do the homework if you don't, good luck. ATTEND OFFICE HOURS!
Dr Pye is lecture heavy, but he very clearly explains the "why" behind the math and is so kind when you are confused. Will do anything to help you understand. He is organized, tests are extremely straight forward, gives a generous participation grade boost if u put in effort. Just do the suggested textbook problems. He made me enjoy math again
A very standard approach to teaching, on chalkboard and paper quizzes. Biggest complaint is he teaches over class time nearly almost class and is very aware of it. Quizzes and tests are similar to the homeworks, and he's a reasonable guy. 3 exams, 1 final, scattered quizzes and other grades. TERRIBLE at updating grades. Fine class, very doable.
Dr. Pye is an extremely kind, funny, and engaging man. I was very worried about this class going in, but it ended up going very smoothly with his way of teaching. If you pay attention in lectures and ask questions when you have them, you will have a very good time in this class whether you have a strong base in pre-calc or not. RECOMMEND!!
My experience with Dr. Pye was awful. It was really hard to understand him most times, he spends way too much time on one single problem in class, does not answer his emails, and overall just isnt helpful. Hes also not very organized. Never knew when the exams were he didnt put a schedule of the semester on his syllabus like most professors.
Prof pye is a nice guy. He is understanding that some ppl dont remember hs math/will go over the easiest ?s. However, he is not the best teacher for calc and will go over one easy problem for the entirety of class+10 minutes. He does give decent partial cred for exams but they are only 10 problems each. He also can be on a high horse sometimes tho.
Nice guy, horrible prof. Horrendous job of explaining. Watched 30 min YouTube recap of entire course, more explaining than he ever did. Super disorganized, sloppy handwriting, doesn't grade crap. Final exam is tomorrow and he just posted a practice exam and today gave us 2 out of the 3 test grades that we have. Semester is over only graded 3 things
He did not grade anything until the last week of the semester, disabled grade calculations, and taught new material up until the day of the final. AVOID AT ALL COST.
Prof. Pye is a nice guy and a good teacher. However, he moves very slowly through material for most of the semester (think fundamental stuff) and graded nothing until the day before the grades were due. Tests are challenging and there is a lot of HW.
He does not grade until the last day of the semester, you will not be able to view your grades until then as well. Messy notes, and hard tests. Seems to be a nice guy, but not organized at all. He claimed to have "lost" most of my classes work...
He is a good teacher with a lot of office hours (online and in his office). Does not grade until the last few days. Notes can be a bit messy, but he posts them online. He does take attendance, though, and has an attendance incentive. Overall, wants you to succeed and the material is pretty light and I thought it was easy.
dis:I am not the best at math. He gives points on quizzes and tests as long as you show what you are doing. If you are lost just go to office hours. He will take an entire class to go over one problem sometimes in a effort to have everyone understand the why, and not just the how, which can get confusing for those who like cut and dry math like me.
The first couple weeks I had high hopes as Dr. Pye said we would be getting many learning activities and ways to practice the material. This eventually stopped after about the fourth week and on top of that, there is no way of knowing your grade because he doesn't put grades in until they are due at the end of the semester. Try to avoid if you can.
WebAssign makes me want to rip my hair out (textbook videos are scarce and DO NOT help at all). I am stuck in the middle of the ocean and I should've jumped out of the boat before the drop date. Learning activities stopped, so my perfect attendance also stopped. 2 hrs of OrganicChemistryTutor will hopefully throw me a liferaft. Wasted tears.
Honestly the definition of an average professor. He is passionate about the material but sometimes doesn't explain it in the best way. Very late with putting grades in and is not the best with communication outside the class. Recommend showing up to every class because new, important material is taught every day and it can be hard to catch back up.
If you want to cry yourself to sleep at night then take dr. pye. He is genuinelly the worst professor I have seen in my entire life. He does not teach he just writes random problems down on paper and doesn't explain them. whatever you do do not take him, if you got him in your schuedule change it or else you will want to die.
A very nice man and passionate about math but cannot teach the subject. He takes the hardest route to explain how to solve problem and rambles a lot. He gets mad when you don't know how to solve a problem and says that we don't have common sense. The only thing I got out of his class is that his name is pye so 5=5. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Do not take Dr. Pye, this was absolutely the worst experience of my life. He quizzed us once a week, we had class tues/thrus, his lectures are useless, he rambles on and on about the concept of math, and why math is the way it is instead of how to get the problems done, it's impossible to understand. He attempts to confuse you, dont take!!!!!!
Do NOT take Dr. Pye Aung!!! If he's the only 205 professor left just take it next semester with anyone else. A quiz once a week with only one question and it is very unlikely you get a 10/10 since he finds any way to dock points. I have taught myself everything. Attendance is mandatory even though his lectures will not benefit you. AVOID!!!!!
His lectures are borderline useless, solves problems all class but doesn't really explain what he's doing. Hard to understand because of accent. Quizzes every week on the homework, and usually picks the hardest problem from the homework to put on them. Impossible to reach outside of class unless you go to his office hours.
do not take pie! in all seriousness he was actually the worst professor I have ever taken in my life. He has trouble speaking English, and you will have trouble understanding him. His lectures are so long and useless, he will ramble on for an entire hour about the concept of mathematics and who created it instead of teaching you how to do it.
i hate him with all my heart he is the span of satan, i cant understand him , the questions that he gives on the tests dont match up with anything that you learn you have a quiz every week and gives you little to no time to complete, he doesnt grade
Worst teacher ever couldn't understand a word he was saying and rarely offered explanation in class and moved at a million miles an hour he also assigns a test each week which has the hardest topic you've learned that week hard to get a 10/10. DON'T TAKE EM
Avoid Pye Aung if you can, and if you HAVE to take him, I recommend watching Online Chemistry Tutor on youtube since he explains things infinitely better than Pye Aung. Terrible professor. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
Do not take this man, he mumbles, you can't understand anything. He tells you he will put grades in that night absolutely you will be waiting two weeks. He is literally the worst do everything in your power to not take his class, you will struggle to pass.
Just save yourself and DO NOT TAKE this professor. You will literally struggle every single class to understand what he is talking about and what is even going on. He doesn't post grades, and he doesn't respond to emails and thinks its kinda funny when kids fail, he blames it on high school teachers.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Honestly one of the worst experiences i have had. He does not teach, just spends all of class rambling. He does not grade things until they are due so you are not going to know your grade in the class until the end of the semester. He is unorganized which is very frustrating especially if you are basically teaching yourself.
Do Not Take! He is very difficult to understand and rambles half the time. He will not grade anything anywhere near on time and gives almost no notice when assignment dates change. Attendance is mandatory, and he is not forgiving for any circumstance. You will not be able to read a single note he writes down.
He overcomplicates everything and gives weekly quizzes that are wayyy harder than the exams and have a big impact on your grade. He does not teach, he explains and expects you to know how to do it after one try. The homeworks are nothing like the in-class examples he gives. Avoid if you can.
STAY AWAY! He is extremely unprofessional and does not respond to emails or grade things on time. He rambles during his class and is not kind. His teaching style is unorganized and overcomplicated. Prepare to get your own tutor and essentially teach yourself. He is very difficult to understand, and his notes are difficult to read.
DO NOT TAKE!!! Rambles on during lectures, likes to dive into math that were not supposed to learn. Gets visibly annoyed when you don't know how to do something. Notes are very messy, half the time you'll be wondering what you're solving. He overcomplicates simple things and likes to avoid teaching difficult material, which are on the tests.
I would avoid tbh. He is very passionate about math, but has no idea how to teach it. He usually rambles on in class and his accent makes it hard to understand him. Quizzes every thursday and they are out of 10 points, but usually pretty difficult. Takes FOREVER to grade!
I would not take him for Math 205. He knows what he's talking about but his classes are so boring especially for someone who has already taken calculus. His tests aren't terribly difficult but they are only 10 questions and the last 4 questions are always 18-20 points so if you get one wrong you're already at an 80.
He is a good person, just not a teacher for all. He doesn't teach well at all and I have never been so confused in math before. Always having A's, to this being an F?? I had 3 different tutors who couldn't figure out how to help me bc his q's never made sense. He also has a strong accent, but you are still able to hear if you listen hard. good luck
he takes forever to grade. he is TOO smart where he cant break it down. he is hard to understand. goes extremely fast. quizzes every thursday. the test barely have any questions so if you miss just one, you're down a lot of points. he is a nice and lenient person, its just the teaching that killed me and i have to retake it now.
Nice professor but overcomplicates the problems which makes them confusing. Online homework and quizzes weekly, which helps with grades. He gives test reviews, which help if you actually look over them and can figure out how to the problems on them. Keeps you until after class sometimes and can be difficult to understand, but helpful in office hrs.
Decent teacher, he has an accent but I was able to understand him majority of the time. I took Calculus in hs so this class was easier for me, but what I disliked about his class was how long it took for him to grade, not seeing hand raises, and the weekly online homework that was harder than what we did in class in exams. Use the sample to study!!
He doesn't really teach which makes understanding his material hard. He takes attendance. Homework isn't terrible and you have a week to do it. Quizzes are weekly and there are 3 exams prior to the final. The exams are difficult so study them at least a week before. Don't take him if you aren't ready to teach yourself basically all the material.
Spent more time going over homework problems then actually teaching. When he did teach it was hard to follow or even understand. There are quizzes once a week and a couple of tests that can be on anything reviewed in class or in homework's making it extremely hard to study. There is a big focus on word problems in the class too.
Avoid for sure, he genuinely doesn't have a great teaching persona and he is incredibly hard to follow. His lectures are so focused on one problem and he goes into dept on why math is math instead of teaching us how to do the lesson. Such an awful expirience.
There's three exams, weekly hw and quizzes(which he still hasn't graded most of them). His class is respectfully very boring and would take 20 minutes to go over one problem. He's a really lenient grader cause even if you mess up midway, he gives you points if you do everything else correctly. You're allowed to use a cheat sheet for the exams.
Homework's every week from which he picks a random question for a weekly quiz both worth 15%. 3 midterms worth 15% each and a final worth 20%. Loves to go on side tangents or spend an entire class on a single problem then wonders why students are behind. Go to class every day and he might bail you out at the end of the year like he did my class.
Speaks very broken English, and essentially teaches himself while all of his students do th
Dr. Pye is a highly intelligent guy, but an awful teacher. He teaches as though his students already know everything he's talking about, which makes his lectures confusing and difficult to follow. Additionally, whenever you ask questions in class he is dismissive, ignores you, and dances around the question and goes on a tangent.
Dr. Pye was very nice and a great person, but he spoke very broken english and was hard to understand. Not to mention his handwriting was also very poor and I could barely read it. Weekly quizzes every friday on the material from the week before, not hard just tedious. Attendance is graded but he forgets to hand out the attendance sheet a lot.
Dr. Pye Aung has been by far one of the worst teachers. He has a heavy accent, which is hard in itself. However, he simply doesn't teach, he introduces a new unit - rushes through it, then expects you to take a quiz each friday and know what you're doing. The homework (every tuesday) is the easiest part of the class. he is also strict on attendence
SOOOOOOO BAD he has an accent that is hard to understand what he is saying, and his handwriting also sucks, so half the time, I am guessing what is going on. He takes all classes to answer one question and then leave you stranded for the rest of them.
Worst math class I've ever taken throughout my whole education including middle and high school. He just doesn't know how to teach or conduct a class. He goes over only like one or two problems in lecture and over explains tiny details but skips over important details leaving you with massive plot holes. Also takes weeks to grade 1 question quizzes
do not take him no matter what he rambles about nothing and is just an awful professor/doesn't know how to teach
This was one of those classes where no matter how much you showed up he was impossible to understand. He lectures on and on about maybe one problem and you leave feeling frustrated. He doesn't take questions well and makes jokes at students who ask. He is incredibly hard to reach, doesn't put grades in and is overall not the best teacher.
he gives one quiz a week sometimes one question sometimes two questions based on what he taught that week, unfortunetly he doesn't really teach so it's up to you to try to figure out the lesson at home which is unfair. Ive spent tons of time at the ssc and still can't get an A on the quizes, maybe its because there is only one question. AVOID HIM
his lectures are useless which leaves it up to you to teach yourself absolutley everything. This was the worst jmu course I have ever taken and im not sure how he is still working here as almost half my class dropped midway because he was not teaching. He is unreliable and his accent is so hard to understand not good
Never taught, only went over homework questions. Was a nice guy, but did not actually teach the material, class just felt like we were reviewing things (we hadn't even learned yet).
Brutal professor who seemingly assumes like we know all of the content. If you ask a question he will make you feel dumb for asking and not explain just dance around the topic. If you don't do it his way (taken any other math class ever) you fail.
This guy is actually terrible, please don't take him if you can. To sum it all up, he is the exact reason why people don't want to go to college and drop out.
If you sit in the front and participate, you'll get a good grade. He's a tough teacher but he's very fair. There's a lot of chances to recover your grade if you get a bad grade. HW is weekly and is basically a free 100. If you work hard/study you'll be fine.
If you've taken any math course in high school up to pre-calculus, you will most likely be fine because the material is rather simple and easy. However, he is not the best teacher. He tends to ramble on about specific problems/ideas when unnecessary. He grades attendance. There's two exams, a small quiz every Friday, and a final exam. Easy, not fav
This was a very difficult course, lectures were very confusing and when he was asked questions he never answered them in a way to understand. Be prepared to having quizzes every week and to be able to teach yourself lessons. Was very hard to understand him and his handwriting. Do not recommend this professor.
Dr. Aung is not a good teacher and will not explain much if you are lost. If you ask him to explain one single problem, he takes exponentially long, ruining the flow of the class. He teaches you the most difficult way to solve the issues, and learning another way would be easier. NO CALCULATORS. However, he is fun to talk to and a nice person.
One of the worst math professors I have ever had. He doesn't actually explain things when he teaches and when you ask him a question he doesn't even answer it and just glazes over it. I had to teach myself everything in the class.
A nice guy and a ok professor, but he made the class a bit difficult. Homework every week, along with weekly quizzes out of 10 points, which are usually only one problem with very little room for error. You have to really put in the work to do relatively well in the class and study for exams. As well is slow with grading.
Material itself not challenging- it was things I had learned in the beginning of HS, but Aung berated students when they made mistakes, went off topic frequently, was behind on grading (to the point where a months worth of quizzes + an exam hadn't been graded by the day of the final) and for that it was hard to know how to improve. Do not recommend
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! class is much harder than it needs to be. If it is only prof available take the class the next sem if possible.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. The only reason I showed up to class was because you would get points if you did. He tries to make college algebra so much harder than it has to be. He goes over maybe 2 questions a class and then cuts people off when they have questions about it.
This was a very unenjoyable class. Quizzes every Friday, no exceptions. Hard to understand. Goes fast on new concepts and really slow on old concepts. Frequent homework. I went to his office hours to do well and that was just as boring as his class, but it's helpful to show up.
DO NOT TAKE LIKE PLSSSS FOR UR OWN GOOD. Not even done with the class and positive I'm gonna fail. Such a sweet guy but the amount of work and effort expected is INSANE. If you miss any friday classes you are actually cooked, and he explains things in a way that makes things so much more complicated and confusing!!!
very qualified, takes ample time to cover material in class (though goes too slow at times). only needed textbook for HW (long but not too frequent). mumbles from time. show up and do well. graded slow at end of semester. easiest math ive ever taken.
Just don't take him, he is too smart to teach the class material, so many quizzes and homework. This class made me want to drop out
He just yells at you if you ask a "easy question" doesn't let you use calculators. He goes over 3 problems in 1 hour 30 min. DO NOT TAKE HIM
DO NOT TAKE!!!! He made us spend 180 dollars on a textbook strictly to be able to do his homework. He will belittle you for asking any question he considers "easy" He never takes time to go over things in class, he will go way off topic which makes everything that much harder. I highly advise you to not take his class.
DO NOT TAKE! Their are weekly quiz's on the homework. The exams are very hard. Each multiple choice is worth 6 points and the written is 25. He never puts in grades, so I don't even know my grade. He explains the things we know, and doesn't goes over the stuff we don't. He doesn't allow calculators and excepts you to know everything about math.
Just do not take him and avoid at all costs. he has really bad handwriting, and speaks really low. The math should not be as hard as it is, its literally high school algebra! The whole class doesnt know whats going on the entire time.he spends 30 minutes on 1 problem and gives quizzes every week. just save yourself the trouble and dont take him!!!!
He explains things so confusingly and fast. Weekly quizzes that are okay if you understand the homework cause its the same thing. His test are hard but he replaces you lowest midterm with your final grade if you do better. He's a nice guy just way too smart to be teaching an intro to calc class. Not AS bad as the reviews but def not good at all.
DO NOT TAKE HIM, doesnt actually teach his students, just goes through the material, quiz every thursday, if you understand the HW quizzes may be more easier.
Dr. Pye is a very sincere guy. But it is inexcusable how hard he makes the simplest math. He spends way too long on a singular problem with countless steps, and it just leads to everyone being confused and stumped. If you are to take this course I would highly recommend using the practice tests to study for the tests as they're almost identical
Seriously avoid taking him if you can. Very bad handwriting and also hard to understand. Quizzes every Thursday and mandatory attendance. Makes simple concepts very hard to understand and will spend nearly a whole class explaining one problem. Not a mean person, just awful professor.
Awful lectures, he will spend an entire class going over one thing that doesn't even relate to the test. There is a quiz every week based on the homework. His teaching methods are overall just terrible; he chooses the most complicated way of doing anything and makes us use that way. Whatever you do, do not take him; he wants his students to fail.
Don't take if math is alr hard for you, just makes it harder. didn't believe in EC. Rude/impatient to answer questions he deemed too dumb/simple that we should "already" know. It felt like he had a new way to call us stupid. never graded anything (we take a quiz every week, 2 exams & he didn't grade even half of it). took over class time for a lot
Doesnt teach well, very difficult to follow and thinks everyone is smarter than they are, dont take this class with him
This guy is a jmu sponsored terrorist. he was hired to fail people
Whatever you do DO NOT take this class. He does not know how to teach, he will belittle you for getting a question wrong. Going to his office hours does not help as he does not know how to simplify problems. Do whatever you can to not take this class.
He is a brutal professor, tutoring center will be your best friend!
This professor is extremely strict and can come across as insensative at times. He is a tough grader, gives quizzes every week, and doesn't post the quiz grades until the day of the final, which creates a lot of unnecessary stress. You also have to buy the textbook because the homework is locked behind it. Dont takes, unless u alr took calc before!
Just dont take
He will go on about one small subject that does not matter to the rest of the material for a large portion of class and by the time he is back on subject, he has to cram in everything at the last minute. He is a stern guy but not that bad, just do the hw and study and it will be fine.
