Great professor if you can get over his heavy Chinese accent. Uses MathLab heavily. Haven't taken his midterm/final yet, but lectures were very good and easy flowing. I recommend him.
This guy is AMAZING! Lil difficult to understand him initially but eventually you get used to him. Also, very easy exams and a very helpful guy.I Highly recommend him
Actually don't know him that well. But seems like a guy with very good personality!!!! Be prepared to have lectures with heavy accents though. Test was a little hard. But not that bad.
Very heavy accent. He is a great professor. Midterm final Homeworks, were very simple. Highly recommended !!!!!!!!!
AWESOME GUY!! Attend his lectures and study from his notes.. and there's no need fore anything else.. Make sure u do the hw again for the final.. Make sure u go for the class before the mid-term.. he hints stuff there!!
Really hard to understand, don't even bother going to lecture. Really unorganized, doesn't utilize My UC Davis so you never know what you have in the class. Changed grading system 1/6 into quarter and didn't update his website even. Overall, avoid; there are better 21a profs.
ok he has a accent, but i thought it was funny; he seems like a guy with a great personality. he explains things very well and uses lots of examples in class, hw weekly and quizzes almost weekly (both on mathlab), 1 midterm and a final. if you took calc beforehand, it should be an easy class. if u didnt, ull learn from him and shouldnt be too bad
He has a very strong accent
He has a pretty strong accent but u'll get use to it. Hw, midterm, and final was pretty easy. He explains the topic very well. I think think his lecture was boring. If you haven't taken calculus before definitely take his class you'll learn a lot from him.
Very heavy accent!!
The accent is very strong, but it is not intolerable. He definitely knows the subject matter and showing up to class is more helpful than annoying. Also, he is a fairly easy grader with his curves.
He has an accent, but so does everyone! Has all the grasp a person can acquire in the subject matter. Lenient in his grading; curves quite nicely. Go to office hours, very helpful.
He is a wonderful professor. Be prepared, he does have a thick accent; however, you pretty much need to focus on what he writes on the board. Homework is done online and is really easy. Generous curve. Good prof and class.
Heavy accent, but I picked it up in about a week. Never opened my textbook. Homework and quizes online. Weird program. Only works in IE. Professor was good, but MT/Final were hard. Problems VERY difficult.
At first his voice was incomprehesible...but once you understand it. youll be fine.Sometmes I found no reason to g to class because he posts everything online. The only reason I went to class was to hear his thick accent and laugh at the way he pronounced words.Truly a fun class.
He has an accent, but you get pretty used to it. He's a smart guy, and he is pretty helpful during office hours. Homework is tough, but exams aren't the worst. If you get this teacher, I wouldn't drop him just because his name is foreign.
After you get used to accent, he's actually a great teacher. Lectures very well organized, does lots of good examples.
This guy was hilarious. From running around the classroom to get from one side of the room to the other just to change the slide, to his crazy accent, it was a very enjoyable class.
Dr. Xia is a very good professor. He has a heavy accent, but it only takes a few lectures to get used to. He moves fast, but by doing so he prepares you well for the exams. The helpful homeworks solidify concepts very well. Funny guy who tends to laugh at himself a lot. Coherent slides posted online make class okay to miss. Overall, a great choice.
Great professor! Though he does carry a heavy accent, but the material he presents to the class(through power point)is very clear and easy to understand. Assignments are helpful for exams, too. Overall, this is a good choice to consider
Did not enjoy the teacher whatsoever. His lectures were mediocre and sometimes difficult to follow, and coupled with his heavy accent it's almost worthless to show up to class. Practice exam material did not help with the actual exams, and it seemed the less I tried to prepare, the better I did off of just basic knowledge. Bottom line: don't do it.
...AVOID AT ALL COSTS... Calculus is something that is just littered with many concepts that need mastering, this is not the professor that will help you w/ that. First few classes were hilarious personally because of his lil school boy appearance then... I realized that I actually needed to learn the material. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Impossible to understand everything that is said. Extremely thick accent hard to follow the accent and the concepts being taught. Avoid taking this class, lectures straight off of slides pointless going to class, really hard midterms, no curve, all homework done online, didn't use book at all. TA's useless didn't help clarify at all
He really wants to help his students and encourages questions. His paper homework isn't too bad (if you need help go to discussion), and the online homework is easy because there are sample probs. If you took Calc BC in high school, this class is quite easy. If not, it can be hard to understand him explain certain concepts. Overall, a good class.
Avoid this teacher. Only enroll in this class if you have prior experience in integration and confidence in it. Very difficult to understand. Noone in lecture even bothers to ask questions for this very reason. Accent is very strong. TA is not much better. Read book only f you have to enroll in this class.
Very hard to understand him with his accent. No one bothers to show up for lectures. He posts his lectures online, but they are straight from the book. Ask questions during discussion. Online hw and paper hw are easy. Midterm was exactly like his practice midterm. Final was hard. Don't take him if integral calculus is new to you.
Although I could not understand his lectures enough to learn anything, the way he laughs at random stuff is entertaining. I was able to learn the material from going over the online homework and lecture notes until I understood the concepts. The online homework and practice tests are very useful. The final was extremely hard.
His lectures are not very helpful but the discussion sections were. You could just go to discussions and skip lectures and still pass. The midterms are very easy but the final was a bit more tough. All in all this is an easy class to pass if u have taken calculus in high school.
Ironically, the happiest math professor I have ever seen/had. Most math professors are rather dull and expressionless. Pretty easy class. He has a VERY strong accent, but you'll eventually get used to it. Grades were very generous and tests weren't difficult as long as you do the homework.
Had him back in Fall 2006. Happy professor with a thick accent. However, his handwriting and neatness makes up for that. Very helpful in office hours. Exams were similar to the practice ones he posted. The one thing I disliked most was MyMathLab. Overall, if you could get past his accent, his lectures are pretty easy to understand. I'd recommend.
If you've taken high school calculus and remember it, this class is fairly easy. However, his thick accent and use of powerpoint slides make lectures very difficult to understand. If you can learn straight from the book instead of from lecture then this is a fairly easy class. If not, then steer clear.
His tests almost exactly mirror his practice exams. This makes them very easy to study for.
Very difficult to understand his english (because of his thick chinese accent). However, all his notes are pdf's and downloadable. He is a very peppy person who knows what he is talking about.
The class is extremely difficult even though I got an A in Ap Cal. Xia is okay to understand but his TA stinks since he won't even complete a whole problem let alone even assist the students. The midterms are super difficult and they are not curved meaning that if you mess up the midterm there goes your grade.
The class is extremely difficult even though I got an A in Ap Cal. Xia is okay to understand but his TA stinks since he won't even complete a whole problem let alone even assist the students. The midterms are super difficult and they are not curved meaning that if you mess up the midterm there goes your grade.
This class was extremely difficult since I did not take Calc in high school. His accent takes a while to get used to - go to office hours since he does better one-on-one. He goes through examples a bit too quickly in class but the TAs are usually helpful. He provides practice exams but the actual tests are much harder and are NOT curved.
His exams are similar to the practice tests, but expect them to be slightly harder. He teaches the material fairly well and his notes are pretty helpful. Unlike other professors, he does not emphasize proofs much. The exams are fair so there wasn't much of a curve.
Xia is very hard to understand. He is at most time incomprehensible. But other than that, the class is fairly simple. Practice tests are pretty much the same as the actual tests. Study them and do the homework. Also the discussion sections are sometimes mandatory because of quizes.
Xia seems like a really nice guy. Unfortunately, his Asian accent makes things hard to understand sometimes for some people. I'm from an Asian background so I had no trouble. However some of this examples take a bit of time to get. Also, this class was FREAKING HARD! I barely managed an A and I have a pretty strong calc background...
Xia's accent is pretty rough. He is a friendly guy but when it comes to his lectures, they were not very helpful at all. However, his tests were pretty easy. It just wasn't a good class if you actually need to learn the material
Accent is somewhat hard to understand at first, but gets easier too understand as the quarter goes on. Practice exams are almost exactly like actual exams. Homework is reasonable and assigned weekly.
Professor Xia is very entertaining. We had a relatively small class so it was funny just messing around with him as he was lecturing. For this class: IF YOU DO AND UNDERSTAND THE HOMEWORK, YOU WILL GET AN A! That's it any grade lower is most likely your fault. He is an easy grader. Accent is the only thing that is hard to understand
This was my favorite math course at davis so far. Do the homework and the practice tests and you should have no problem getting an A or B. Nice professor who cares about the students, and kept lectures interesting. Really joyful guy who likes his job.
Great guy with a great personality. Always takes time out to answer students' questions during lecture. The accent is tricky in the beginning, but can be overcome by attending lecture consistently. Tests are very predictable, just do the homeworks, go to discussion, and study the practice midterms and you should get above a B- quite easily
He is super friendly and takes time to answer questions himself. Although his accent is thick, if you regularly attend lectures you should have no problems. He tends to build from the ground up in his lectures so be patient because they might help you understand the general concepts. If you do his the practice exams, you'll do fine on the tests.
In general, the class is quite easy. Quizzes and midterms are not too bad but he is a harsh grader. The final was hard so do be prepare for one hard exam.
Very nice professor and very approachable. His accent is a little strong but nothing you can't get used to. Provides plenty of examples and are willing to answer any questions. Recommend!
Professor Xia's the man. He is without a doubt the happiest professor (or teacher) I've ever had, and it's hard not to smile in his presence. The midterms are very similar to his practice tests and the 5 quizzes with one dropped is an easy 20% of your grade. Despite his heavy accent, I'd definitely recommend him.
I put in a good deal of effort into this class and still got a C. His midterms were only worth 30 points so if you missed one question, you were done. Final was okay, but midterms are hard. Quizzes aren't bad.
This guy, horrendously thick accent. This was the worst 3.0 rating if I ever saw one. Midterm 1 was standard and okay, Midterm 2 was 70% multiple choice, I missed 3 and lost 21 points out of 100 for those alone. No curve either. Final - he pulled irrelevant things from the first midterm but didn't have one question from the second midterm. Riddic.
He has a thick accent, but it's easy to get used to after a while. He's a really happy guy and his notes are usually pretty helpful. Tests were a little hard, but the final was curved by 20%. Overall, a so-so professor.
Professor Xia is extremely helpful, clear and fair when it comes to what he expects you to know for exams. While he didn't give practice exams or finals, most of the questions come straight from the homework. He has a very positive attitude towards teaching and I am so happy I get to have him again next quarter.
Strong accent, quite tolerable. Very jolly in lecture. HW is relatively simple as it only requires you to utilize in class theorems. MT problems are essentially HW problems so if you do well on HW, then you probably will do well on the tests
His accent was hard to comprehend at first but you'll get used to it by the second week. Quizzes are based on homework and notes, no surprises. If you take him, go over the notes and homework before the quizzes and midterms. He drops the lowest quiz score because he's a boss and he's really funny during lecture, especially when he makes a mistake.
Professor Xia's accent certainly took some getting used to, but you don't even need to attend lecture to do well in this course. His weekly quizzes and test questions came straight from the homework, so as long you do that, you will pass. His midterms were both very easy and straightforward. Final was tough, but the quizzes are an easy 20%.
Professor Xia really cares about his students and tries his best to help us understand the material. His accent does take some getting used to, but it's not too bad. He is very knowledgeable in the subject. There are weekly quizzes, 2 midterms and a final. They are all very fair, and you should have no trouble if you put in effort and study.
Very clear standards and finals/midterms are straight from the practice tests and homework problems. Just don't fall behind because it's hard to catch up. Pretty conceptual lectures but uses plenty of examples.
This professor is the best I've had in the whole 17 series. Slight accent but not too bad, and very cheerful and engaging lectures. Tests are exactly like practice tests. I love how happy he seems when teaching; you can really tell he enjoys what he is doing. Also, the class itself is not too hard, just builds off of 17B.
Pretty laid back professor, pretty funny as well during lecture. Test are straightforward and are heavily based on homeworks. Thus do the homework and you should be fine. The only challenge is his accent which is kinda tough but you'll get to use to it. Otherwise, a fine professor.
He is pretty chill, his accent takes a bit to get used to but showing up for lecture is totally optional. He really wants you to pass!!! Tests are easy and closely resemble the practice tests that he gives out. Would take again!
Extremely hard to understand so the lectures (for me) were pointless to go to. I did better by reading the textbook. The tests were really hard so you have to be sure to understand the material. Stay on top of the material because there are weekly quizzes that could save your grade if you do well on them.
The original professor of this course had to step down as the instructor and Dr. Xia took over for him. The transision was super smooth. He does have a thick accent, but it is possible to understand him. Super freindly in class and in OH. Final was fair, had easy parts and hard parts. Homework wasn't too demanding. Would definetly take again.
Dr. Xia is a very great teacher. He provides proofs and calculations, not just copying the book, with details and decent explanations. He is super nice and helpful during the office hours.
Easily the best math professor I've ever had. He's so genuinely excited about everything that calculus can do in the world that it actually made me want to go to class. He has a strong accent, but it's easy to get used to. Print and use the pdf notes he posts. Great lecture style, takes time on examples to make sure you understand what you're doing
Awesome professor! He genuinely cares about his students and wants us to succeed. Thorough explanations and a lot of examples. Uploads his slideshows on Canvas. Assigns WebWork and written homework; drops the lowest score from both types of homework. Provides practice exams that are similar to the real ones. Exams were very fair.
Best math prof ever! Prof Xia explains abstract analysis ideas clearly and makes them easy for us to understand. Exams are similar to hws.
Best math professor ever! I hope I can take his class again before I graduate. Office hours is real helpful!Definitely recommended!!!
Best math Professor ever! Prof Xia is literally a saint! thumbs-up
good professor fair grade fair curve
He is the best professor I have ever met! The course is not easy, but he delivers in a processing way, which makes it easy to understand. He is so nice to students and always responsive! He is always kind and patient with us. I would like to take another course from him again!
Very kind and helpful. Really cares about the students and wants them to learn. The tests were very fair and representative of the hw and lecture.
Best professor ever! He is very helpful and explains concepts very well. If you want to do well in his class, make sure you go over his lecture notes after class, go to office hours (TA's or his) if you have questions, and make sure you understand every single homework problem and all the main theorems before the exams.
2 midterms and 1 final, 80% of the grade, which is a lot. Exams have 9 questions for only 50 minutes. If you fail the exams, you will not pass this course, because he does not curve or drop midterms at all. You have 3 assignments each week. One of the assignments grade by your work, not just answers. All the HWs are hard even if you have lectures.
He does not understand it is during the pandemic at all. The due dates for homework are always unreasonable. Normally, we have 3 HW each week, and he cannot extend HW even one more day or weekends unless too many students complain about it. This week, we have 4 HW, they are due Tue., Wed., Thur., and Sat. this week. Next Mon. we have MT. Stressful!
His accent is tough at first, but his handwriting is the worst. He gives a lot of homework with an impossible deadline during pandemic (I have to stay up 4am almost everyday to do his hw). 3-4 hw per week, each consists of 10-30 sub questions, each question takes 10-15 min to finish because of its extreme difficulty that unrelated to the lecture.
Lectures only cover the basics of the content, rest you have to read the book or watch youtube. Homework (webwork 10q 10 attempts, sometimes gradescope 5q) requires self-learning to complete, 3/wk, hardest part of the course. Midterms are very similar to the homework. So spend some time understanding the homework, then midterms will not be as hard.
80% exams. 20% homework. Homework are very tough and time consuming. Exams are relatively easy, at least the real questions are very similar to the practice exams. Heavy accent. Worse handwriting.
Homework is very stressful and time consuming. Exams are relatively easy.
3 HW every week, due Tue Thur and Fri. Do math every day! HW is much harder than lectures, and some questions you cannot even find in textbooks! You will spend at least one hour per HW, and HW is ONLY 20%of the grade. Three Midterms(80%of grade), NO CURVES! Only few questions in practice exams are similar to Midterms. Online now, worser in-person.
Homework is very time consuming but only consists of 20% of the final grade. 80% exams. The difficulty of the exams are very uncertain. Three exams, the averages be like 77%, 90%, and 79%. Heavy Chinese accent. Horrible handwriting. RUN!!!
Prof. Xia gave pretty good lectures and plenty of webwork homework. It is very important to dedicate time to the course. Exams take up to 80% of the grade and the final is not easy. Make sure to study. Good course and professor overall.
Terrible. Please check for their grading errors. There should be at least one every assignment/test. It can boost your grades.
No curve at all even if the average is pretty low. Heavy Chinese accent (barely understand his lecture for the entire quarter), handwriting is twice as worst as accent. Lots of discouraging homework. He never replies emails regarding our concerns. Worst professor ever!
Prof Xia is a solid choice for 21C. His lectures weren't super helpful IMO, but his webworks/homeworks were reasonable. Both midterms were easy and almost exactly like the practice ones he gave us. Final was a little trickier, but not by much. Overall, I put pretty little effort into this class and was still able to end with a 96.6%.
His lectures arent helpful at all and he gives out so much homework. Most of your grade comes from exams and he doesnt curve at all. I wouldnt take him because most professors do curve and he doesnt, so your grade will get hurt. However, his exams are pretty similar to the practice, but they were closed notes.
Practice exams are very similar to the real ones. One of the best professors I met at Davis.
Our grade is mainly determined from our tests, so make sure to do well on those. The practice exams are pretty similar to his tests, but his tests are closed-note. Homework was also pretty heavy (due 2-3 times weekly). However, he was a nice professor. He would never hesitate to stop and answer any questions we may have had.
Professor Xia is responsible about his teaching, and his lectures and homework will give you a firm understanding of 127B. It is also important to fully digest all the theorems. I can see that the professor always wants to see more student participation, but still some never attend. Go to the lectures because it is the only way to succeed.
His lectures were clear and well-organized but he only curve the grades very slightly.
Been in the class for a few weeks. Honestly, he's a great person and is really really kind and caring especially in OH. His lectures are aright, usually just following the textbook since its very standard linear algebra material. There is written HW and online HW and they're fine. He has a thick accent but you get used to it.
Honestly, his score is not as high as it should be. Yes, the accent is thick, but the lectures are straightforward enough. He does lecture capture and posts lecture notes. He is accessible and helpful. The homework is manageable and his test questions are fairly straightforward too. Solid professor.
This class is easier than 21C or 21D but Xia is hard to understand and his lectures are not very great. Do the homework, watch some youtube and you'll be fine
Online homework assignments can pile up and be a hassle to do at the end of the quarter but everything else (written homework and exams) are very easy. Exams are almost a copy of the homework problems which makes the exams very easy. Easy to get an A if you understand the homework pretty well.
I'm sorry but Prof Qinglan Xia is not good at all. He does not answer questions during lectures and if you come after hours he seems irritated when asking too many questions. Really hard to understand and hear. His handwriting is also not good. One of the worst professors I've ever had.
"AVOID HIM AT ALL COST" literally made my account just to say this: 1.Lectures are super dry and useless. make simple concept complicated 2.Tests material that he BARELY covered the day BEFORE the exam. 3.Exam no cheatsheet no calculator no review session no study guide no sample exam. Feel free to register his course if you want challeges in life.
Straightforward written homework due once every week/every two weeks based on examples given in class along with online homework due before each major exam. 2 midterms and a final based almost solely off of the written homework. Lectures were recorded. Thick accent but you get used to it. Doesn't make the class any harder than it has to be imo.
His lectures are clear and straight forward. He is also very willing to answer questions after class. And there are about 2.5% extra credits on the final. He is one of the best Professors I met in Davis!
perfect and the best professor
Taken during Summer Session so super fast paced. Still packed all of the regular quarter material into a short class, but I feel like he tested accordingly. Two midterms (25% each) and one final (30%) and homework (20%). His lectures were super organized and he had multiple choice questions that really made or broke your grade. Kinda heavy accent
If he explains and you don't understand, he just moves on. If you are someone who likes working ahead of time/ hates last-minute stuff don't take him over the summer maybe he is different during regular semesters I wouldn't know. His notes are hard to understand. I did a lot of self-studying just to get by. Overall, it was a VERY frustrating class.
Assigns significantly more homework than other calc 21C professors, and the homework is both more difficult and time consuming than the other teachers. He is a good lecturer, but has a very strong Chinese accent.
Terrible explanations, poor handwriting, strong accent, and no lecture recordings, as well as an unreasonable amount of WebWork assignments.
Xia is a nice person and clearly loves what he teaches. However, I would not recommend taking this professor. His lectures are disorganized, he moves on quickly and jumps from topic to topic. In addition, his accent is extremely thick and very difficult to decipher what he is saying.
Assigns four to five homework assignments a week that are very difficult even with going to tutoring and office hours. He goes way too fast during lectures and has a thick accent so it is extremely hard to understand what he's saying. Doesn't curve even though class averages were low.
He is a very nice guy and a good professor however his difficult homework and hard to understand lectures can make this class harder than it may be.
he gives an unreasonable amount of homework a week and even tutors cannot figure out how to do some of his problems. his lectures go way to fast and he has a very strong accent which makes it really hard to understand what's going on. when you ask for help he interrupts you within seconds of asking and does not even answer your question properly.
Lots of hw but only 10%grade so dont trip but do them to learn.2Midterms & 1Final is most of the grade. Provides 1practice midterm foreach and 1practice final which are almost identical to the real ones so as long as you do them youll be ight.Go to lecture or look at his notes he posts on canvas. He the homie fr yall hatin, youll get used to accent.
I was worried at first bc of Prof Xia's reviews. However, he is really sweet and makes fair tests. If you need help, he's always willing to help out. Calc room and TA office hrs are great resources too! I think I could gotten an A if I put in more effort towards the end. You'll be find if you can do all the hw questions without help.
Pretty straightforward with homework and tests. Homework can be difficult at times, but the test questions can be easier than the homework, and created with hand-calculations in mind. Tests feel fair, and use question types you've seen before.
His class is pretty easy and he might open up extra or repoen existing WeBWork exercises if enough students are struggling
Has a very thick accent but you get used to it. Gives practice tests that are very similar to the actual exam. Homework heavy but drops the lowest score. Very nice and helpful during office hours. Lectures are very fast
The class is very fair, if you understand all the webwork, written homeworks, and study guides, the midterms and final should be an easy 100 and they look a lot like the written homework. Has a bit of an accent but it's not too bad and you don't need to attend lectures really anyway.
Protect this man at all costs. Definitely go to his office hours if you can; he is super friendly and open to helping students!
He is a caring man and a good math professor he has an accent and his homework is kind of annoying and long but the midterms are fairly similar to the practice tests.
Terrific lecturer, he explains the concepts so well and easy to understand. As long as you go to his lectures, you will be fine. His homework on webwork can be tough at times but he is accessible at office hours and will help you. His tests are similar to his practice midterms/final. Enjoyed this class a lot!
Protect him at all cost!! Lectures were so clear and informative. I feel like you don't need to understand the materials in this class, you just need to memorize all the techniques.(He definitely explained the concepts really well, it's just memorization is easier for me) Lowest homework dropped. A+: 96.5; A: 92.5; A-: 89.5; B: 80.5; C+: 70; C: 64
His lectures are okay, but there are a lot of assignments. For Midterm 2, I felt that the time was insufficient, and the calculations were too extensive.
Very clear lectures and exams are similar to the practice exams. He posts the lecture notes. Homework took a long time but he gives you all the information you need to solve it. Very nice about regrades. Thick accent tho.
Professor Xia is the GOAT. His lectures are kinda fast but he includes examples (easy to do hwk). He makes the midterms and finals considering the calculations we have to do and the questions are very similar to the practice exam.
Challenging but rewarding class. Attend office hours and use unstuck study for extra practice - it really helps. Tests are fair if you stay on top of the homework.
One of my favorite classes so far that I've taken at Davis! I really enjoyed learning about ODEs and this professor made the content very digestible. The grading for the midterms and final were very generous. Also your lowest homework grade is dropped! I highly recommend taking 22B with this professor if you get the chance.
Makes things pretty easy to understand even with the accent and goes over lots of examples, really energetic in lecture and receptive. Quite a bit of homework which got tough later on but still manageable, lowest one gets dropped. Exams were almost exactly like the practice ones and graded generously though there was a bit of a time crunch.
If you attend lecture, do the homework, and do all the practice exams, you're set for the actual exam. He doesn't curve a lot, but he honestly doesn't have to because he prepares students so well for the exam. I would take him for any math class if I could.
dont take this professor, makes the worst exams possible where you still dont score even after memorizing ALL theorerms. has a really bad accent to the point you miss most of what hes saying. no curve too
