Very good teacher. Grades on a curve. tells you at he beginning of the semester that it is going to be a easy course, that he doesn't want to torture you. Not too bad!
very tough on assignment. no curve. if you wanna get good grade avoid him.
His mastery of the english language is non-existent. Bring crossword puzzles or a walkman to class to pass the time. His tests are lengthy and ask questions to confuse you. If you want to learn and get a good grade take someone else.
This guy really knows his stuff but his class is extremely hard. You have to pay attention and really sit down with the book and read. My only complaint is that he is quick to deduct points off exams and assignments at whim.
The guy went to the China Space Academy... enough said.
He is not a bad guy...he means well. I got a good grade. Showed up to class, took the exams, and quizes. Nothing to hard. His review is very helpfull.
Great Professor. If you do all your work assigned you will do fine.
VERY open to questions. Encourages you to ask and does not put you down when you ask even if he just explained that concept twice. Is patient. Very slight accent, but fully understandable. YOU WORK HARD, but if you do it you will GET IT. Good luck.
Very fast, you will need to read on your own. If you have questions you'll need to go see him. Don't do email. Very open to questions in class. Sometimes have to ask several times due to ESL differences. Lots of homework. Wants it ontime.

As long as you show up to class and do you work you will do well.

greate class. this prof has a unique style. his assignments are always interesting but sometimes too hard. very interesting lecture, I learned alot.
took 2 of his classes. great professor. learned a lot . he helped me a lot even for the classes he does not teach. sometimes people had hard time to catch up with his pace, but he is certainly willing to help.
Easy class. Material very dry and boring. Does his best to get you through the class with as little aggravation as possible. Good teacher as long as you go to class and study the notes you will get an A.
This professor is great. He lets you know what he expects and makes it very clear.
Great summer class to take, easy to understand, answers ur ques. Tests are not that bad...read over everything he points out during the review, no hw, in class quizzes that are open book.
Take him. He is really great professor. Easy to understand. Will help you with anything you ask him for. He is really fun and you will learn a lot.
pretty easy class read the book pass the test simple as that.
Very good prof. Reasonable workload. fair grading. One of the best.
Very Easy Class. Professor can be funny at times. The workload is easy; exams and homework. He is very helpful when you ask for it. Class can sometimes be boring and dry, but its definitly worth it.
If you need to take 290, take this guy. Pretty boring, and uses surprise quiz grades to make attendance part of your grade. You won't have to worry much about your grade, just staying awake.
Taking him in summer session. Attendance is required. Be prepared to write a 4-5 page paper each week. Workload is much heavier than other summer courses.
This class doesn't have any benefit it at all but it is required. Since this is the case then definitely take this professor. He is really boring but all you have to do is the work. There is a 15 question quiz every week, 4 case studies, midterm, & a final. Not to bad, he is pretty easy, and he has bell curve distribution, which may be bad or good.
Dr. Chen is a great professor, and it is true that he gives weekly assigments but they are easy to do as long as you follow his instructions. I would definitely take his class again.
The semester consisted of quizzes every week (they were a bit difficult despite being online), 2 exams, and 4 easy assignments. The class itself was really boring, but you should get at least a B if you try.
great prof. Not a difficult class and I learned a lot. Well structured class and you know from beginning what to do to get a good grade. Lecture is interesting if you are interested in the subjects
This is a hybrid course. I felt that the organization of the course is effective. As long as you follow his instruction and do the work carefully, you end up with good grade and learn a lot. Most part of the lecture is online and he is just highlighting some points during in-class session which can be interesting. Don't miss class otherwise you wil
This is a hybrid course that is pretty effective. As lond as you follow his instruction and do the work carefully (weekly online quizzes and a few assignmets, midterm and final), you will end up with a good grade. Nice professor, take him.
I like him. A nice professor who are funny and straightforward on every requirement. It is a well structured hybrid course. Online lectures. 4-5 assignments, two tests and 12-13 quizzes. As long as you follow his instructions, you will be doing fine. I am pretty into the field of IT so I felt his lectures interesting.
Class is pretty boring but not terrible. Attendance counts for 1 pt each day and there are weekly quizzes online that you can close and reopen so you can copy questions and look up answers mid term and final are the same way. He has ppts online that have recordings so you have to listen because he does ask questions about the audio.
Attendance is mandatory, however class is SOOOO boring. No need to pay any attention. Weekly online quizzes that are from previous chapter. Oline midterm and final (also very easy). 4 assignments which take about a half hour each. If you can stay organized and come to class you'll get an A.
Good prof., boring class but is easy if you go and take all the quizzes.
Class is extremely hard. Weeky HW, 2 exams and a final. Attendance is mandatory. Awesome professor but the material is very hard. Be prepared to expend from 4-3 hrs a week on homework.
Great professor that really cares but takes point off for any litte thing. Class is extremely hard and assigments time consuming.
I liked the hybrid course. The lectures were interesting and Professor had a lot of good information to share. There are weekly quizzes from the textbook and from the lectures. The questions are somewhat tricky. There is a midterm and a final (90 questions each) and 4 or 5 assignments.
It's a very structured class so it's not hard to follow. His materials on bb is organized so you'll have everything you need. I like prof. Chen however his quizzes and tests are so time consuming. Since he assigns the chapter ahead of time, his lectures can get a bit boring because you already know what he's talking about.
BY FAR ONE OF THE WORST PROFESSORS IN COLLEGE HISTORY. EXTREMELY MEAN, HORRIBLE GRADER, HORRIBLE TEACHER. JUST HORRIBLE COMING FROM A GUY THAT LOVES SQL ECT. ITS ALMOST LIKE HE IS AFTER FAILING HIS STUDENTS.DOESNT USE THE BOOK ITS "HIS WAY OR THE HIGHWAY"...CONSIDERING REPORTING TO THE HEAD OF DEPT DUE TO THIS PROFESSOR BEING UNILATERALLY "UNFAIR"
Gives you weekly online quizzes that are mostly from lecture or online quizlet answers (pretty easy). lectures are sooo boring but you need to go for attendance. the midterm and final answers are ALL online and the only annoying assignments are the 4 homework assignments he gives which don't take long. time consuming but got an A
Insanely long HW that cant be done even by people in database profession. Unclear teaching skills. Teaches outdated techniques. Harsh grader. Doesnt care if students are actually learning.
great prof. tough grader though. alot of interesting homeworks. learned a lot from him
The way the class is setup makes it pretty easy to get an A or B in the class. Attendance is mandatory, and since the class is only once a week you really should go to all of them.. There is weekly online quizzes and about 4 assignments due throughout the semester (not tough at all). The midterm and final are also online.
I had him for SQL/Database Systems. The HW was scary at first but once you get used to the style of it it gets easier. His grading is pretty fair, tests were strait forward enough 1/2 take home for each exam. Grading got easier toward the end of the semester. Curved the final grade, as long as you stick it our you'll do fine (his words not mine)
Easy class. Simply show up, write papers and 1 presentation.
he is the toughest prof I have ever had . Weekly home works are very challenging and long but if you study hard and pay attending to his lecture you really learn a lot from him about DB design and SQL. He encourage you to ask questions electronically and responded quickly. No one in his class got more than 85% in terms of standing but he curves
He's not a horrible professor, his lectures were just very long. That's all they were, lectures. He stood in front of the class and talked the whole time. I did not retain much from this class, he was quite bland.
Took his hybrid course and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would have been. Gives weekly quizzes and and gives assignments almost every 2 weeks. The class is more interesting if you are studying anything MIS related. He was decent but his lectures would be too long at times. 1 midterm and 1 final and they are all online.
Dr. Chen is a good professor. It is a hybrid class and a easy class too! Don't buy the textbook I say because there is slideshows from the textbook given. One of the easiest classes I've took. We met only once a week and have weekly quizzes that was online and you could find the answers. A very easy class.
lots of homework/ Weekly assignment takes a lot of time. But you can contact him through email for homework questions and get his response/hints very quickly . Interesting subjects but tough work.
Easy class if I would've done my work. Weekly quizzes you can find the answers online assignments are hard but gives you a week to do and midterm and final multiple choice online. Attendance is mandatory and a big part of the grade.
He's okay. Well actually his lectures are torture, but if you get through that it's quizzes and tests that you can take online (without lockdown browser) at home. You don't have to show up to take tests and they are for the most part pretty easy. His group project assignments are really annoying but he isn't a tough grader.
Dr. Chen is a solid choice. While the topic of the course is not the most interesting for many, you will leave with a good foundational knowledge relating to information systems. There is, however, a fair amount of work involved and you need to take it seriously. He is very knowledgeable and provides useful information in lectures.
No textbook use. Assignments are not hard and you can easily pass. His tests are at home so take advantage and you will pass.
He is ok, you will pass but he can be boring/annoying at times. Midterm and final are super easy
I'm currently in a MS in Computer Science program. Thanks to Dr. Chen, I had a strong enough foundation that I skipped a course in databases and am taking a more advanced one. It was a very tough class, but absolutely worth it. Start homework early and ask questions. You won't regret the hard work you did in this class for the rest of your career.
Professor Chen was okay. His lectures are really boring and if you miss even one class (he doesn't give excused absences no matter what) you grade goes down a lot. There is 3 group assignments which aren't hard but are annoying, and his lectures are really boring. There are also quizzes each week on LockDown Browser which are hard.
Professor Chen is one of the most difficult and critical professors I've ever had. His weekly assignments are very challenging and complicated, and are graded harshly. He is beyond discouraging, and often refers to students "surviving" his course. He expects you to teach yourself everything outside of class. I strongly advise you avoid taking him.
Terrible professor, expects you to teach yourself. In class he goes over solutions to the previous assignment and then rushes through the lecture and doesnt actually have material worth note taking, as he expects you to actually teach yourself. Answers are unclear via email when you contact him and he doesnt give constructive feedback in the hw
Dr Chen is the worst professor you can possibly take. Attendance is mandatory for his class, meanwhile you won't learn a thing from going. As others pointed out, he expects you to teach yourself from the textbook. The mean grade for almost every homework is a D and it's an F for the midterm. He should be ashamed by these results and quit academia.
Good luck getting through his lectures, as they are the most boring thing Ive sat through in my life.
Worst class I have ever taken. Info290 is mainly hybrid so course only meets once a week. Quizzed and tested on everything before going to class that week so lectures are a waste of time. Can not understand professor Chen, or read his handwriting. Awful grader with no compassion for students. Outright said "No one gets an A on anything" UGH!!!
His lectures are really boring and pointless since we already had to look at his powerpoint which you have to listen to his voice the whole time. Quizzes every week which are tough and group assignments also. Don't go to class grades are lowered a lot.
His stupid weekly quizzes will screw you over. They're so boring and he asks very detailed questions so take notes on his videos. If you miss class your grade drops a bunch so go to class! He seems mean but is actually kinda nice if you show him you care.
Prof. Chen is the absolute worst Montclair State has to offer. The material isn't hard but he makes it extremely difficult by his failure to communicate the material clearly. He put his students down and is not encouraging at all. Avoid at all cost. If his class is required then change majors. He is just an awful professor and a terrible person.
Although he seem mean, he is really nice and really want you to learn. The weekly quizzes could be painful because he asks specific questions from the recorded power point lectures. A 100-questions midterm and a 100-questions final (3 Hours). The class could be complicated sometimes.
He is a very tough grader and is not clear with his directions. His class was more trying to pass rather than learning the actual material.
intensive training on DB design and SQL. very interesting lecture and a lot of hands on practices . learned a lot, highly recommended
this guy is absolutely terrible, better day a prayer if you have to take him
tough but very supportive professer. a lot of homework each week. but you can get his feedback regarding your work before turn it in, very helpful teaching style.
Extremely rough with grading. Rude remarks, expects students to figure it out themselves. Weekly group homeworks are very time consuming and impossible to get a good score. This professor is a gatekeeper, so you have to be very serious about analytics to make it through. Please save yourself, this professor should retire already. Good luck
He gives too much busy work as well as a couple group projects and his instructions are always unclear. Also, he is not afraid to really berate you in his emails. I asked a couple general questions and he replied in all caps and did not hide his frustration at all.
As a senior, this professor is by far the worst I have experienced. There are weekly quizzes based off the online video lectures and in class, he didn't allow us to use our laptops (which doesn't make any sense because this is a technology course and everyone takes notes online). He also had the worst attitude if you didn't understand his material.
His class lectures comes off easy but he only gives simple examples while the homework is so complicated and even when you email him for help, he does the VERY minimal. Pop quizzes every week and are rather difficult. Would steer away from this professor!!!
This professor is something, he's not a bad or mean guy by any means, but his classes are dreadful, so boring those lectures are. He should honestly just teach his classes online and also this class you can't use your computer. Every week he assigns a quiz, some group work activities, and a very long midterm and final but you could do it at home.
The second half of the semester is the most difficult part, learning SQL. Try to pay attention to the lectures and replicate what he does. Try not overwhelming yourselves with other classes. Take tutoring if it is offered and office hours for help. SQL is a high demand skill for data analytics/science. This course makes sure you know SQL 100%.
he assigned at least 3 assignments a week. all his lectures are pre-recorded (he has direct quotes from his lectures on his quizzes). weekly quizzes w/ lockdown browser.
Course needs improvement. The videos are repetitive, the slides are too minimalistic, and the assignments are overly complex compared to what's covered. The requirement to use only lecture code, despite having a textbook, hinders learning. The professor's limited availability challenges working students Updating the methods would enhance the course
This professor was the worst I've had in three years at Montclair. On the first day, he advised us to drop the class if it wasn't a requirement. His instructions and lectures are hard to follow, and he expects everything done exactly his way. He puts in minimal effort, with simple lectures but assigns difficult, time-consuming work.
- extremely demanding class - very time consuming - material is hard to learn - Professor is really blunt - I emailed the professor every week which helped immensely with my grade - gives good lecture resources - his class is always my biggest challenge (I've had him more than once)
for the people saying he knows a lot youll learn a lot, it is a self learning course he teaches 1 + 2 in class and the hw which is 60 percent of the grade is more like calculus.
People are way too harsh on this professor. The subject is difficult, but he is very knowledgable and he wants to help you. My biggest advice is to email him your homework before it's due because he will give you comments and tell you what to improve/change. Pop quizzes almost every class, but homework has more weight on your grade.
This professor was a nightmare to have. He is the only person at MSU that teaches INFO210 and the workload is brutal. I'd recommend not missing any assignments if you want to pass + do every extra credit that he offers. His lectures seem simple but once the weekly assignments come around, it's extremely complicated. Goodluck
Professor Chen is truly one of those professors who care deeply about their work and strive to help each student gain the maximum knowledge and skills from his courses. Yes, this class was the most challenging one of freshman year; however, it was also the most informative and valuable.
Chen is funny and engaging. He wasn't afraid to repeat the same concept several times to make sure we understood, and kept my attention despite the long and late hour at which we met. The homework is time-consuming, but he is responsive to questions by email. I appreciated the written pop-quizzes; they helped me learn.
Professors like him are the reason students drop out of college. He is probably the worst instructor I have encountered at MSU. Be prepared to study everything on your own!
Paper pop quizzes every week! Tough Grader
Extremely tough professor. He will give you a lot of homework, it will take at least 6 to 8 hours a week plus you will have pop up quiz every week on paper. This is very important class for Business analytics students to learn about database modeling and SQL but the thing is he thinks that we already know everything and that's his problem.
Dr. Chen is one of the best professors in the School of Business. You'll learn a lot in his class, and he prepares you well for every requirement and assignment. He's approachable when you have questions, and his feedback helps you think more critically. He's very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. This was one of my favorite classes.
