The information taught is not difficult, what is difficult is his ability to accurately portray information to students. Does not know the material himself, so get ready for a lot of textbook reading and Khan Academy videos. Does not give warning when you have a lot of memorization to do, and is not consistent in both classes.
This course was very frustrating. Dr. Johnson does not seem to really know the material that well himself, and most of class is him reading the powerpoint, not actually teaching the material. There is a lot of memorization, but the review sessions can be helpful and there is a lot of extra credit.
Negative stars. Stay away from him. This man is so pretentious and laughs at your struggle. Its obvious when hes annoyed with the class and he speeds through slides in seconds. He requires a ridiculous amount of memorization to only ask one question on all of it. Even tho hes better alone in office hours he still makes you feel like youre stupid
Would not recommend. It was made so much harder than it needed to be. He doesnt seem to know what hes teaching and solely relies on reading off the slides. There is a good amount of homework that is not helpful in any way. He seems to get annoyed when students are genuinely confused on a subject. Prepare to read the book and teach yourself.
LAZY! Made the TA grade everything; it was as if the TA was the prof b/c of the lack of work he put into the class. B/c of this, assignments weren't returned to us in an orderly fashion. When we'd ask, he'd blame and put the TA on the spot. Comes off as caring about/loves his students/job, but his laziness shows the true reality. Avoid.
Very straight forward on what is expected. Homework and quizzes are nice grade boosters if you pay attention in class.
He is highly energetic, and passionate about the subject. He makes it very clear what needs to be known on tests, and thoroughly walks you through all the material. Funny, and wants you to do well. Pay attention and participate!
Very easy to understand what is expected of you on assignment. If you pay attention in class and read topics you might be struggling with should easily be able to get the grade you want
Absolutely terrible. Does not seem to understand the material he covers, and as a result his lectures are confusing and contradictory. His expectations are unclear, and you are often given very little time between being given information to memorize and the exam/quiz. I actually did better ignoring him and listening to Khan Academy. Avoid!!!!
Awful. I'm almost certain he chooses questions for the weekly quizzes via dartboard. Don't bother asking him questions through email outside of office hours; he will read them and not answer you. Very smug and holier-than-thou. Take anyone else for this class. I will say the difficulty is mostly not his fault since the class is hard for everyone.
BCC is a good "how to be a college student" class. The general curriculum tried to teach certain in depth topics through the book they make you read (don't have to) but it is just general help with registration and stuff. Dr. Johnson made this class very entertaining with stories and activities to make it not even seem like a class.
Only reads powerpoints made by the book. Doesn't have a clear rubric for anything. Says he wants to help students, but seems annoyed or degrading when asked questions. Doesn't reply to e-mails. AVOID.
AVOID IF POSSIBLE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE GOD!! worst prof I've ever had, so dismissive when students bring up concerns. literally laughs in your face when you ask a question. purposefully misleads students on what is on examinations and is so lazy! you have to teach yourself and memorize every detail to get an ok grade. much harder then it should be
honestly dont know why he is a professor, its very obvious he is not passionate about teaching or in helping students succeed. Very demeaning, dismissive, and LAZY. if you have to take him, from the bottom of my heart i am so sorry and GOOD LUCK!
Heard horror stories about this prof, but CHM342 was not that bad. Study a little bit everyday and youll be prepared for quizzes and exams. Lots of extra credit. He was flexible for burnout (group quizzes). Challenges students to apply biochem to broader health. Grading takes a while and some test questions are unclear, so just ask about them.
If you take this course you're on your own. The powerpoints are just the textbook. You can manage, but be prepared to learn everything and on your own.
Was really nervous for Biochem, especially after reading the ratings here. I have to say that the tests questions were clear, and he gave tons of extra credit. Its a difficult class and hes not super engaging but kids at Berry are so coddled and dramatic about professors. The class and professor are both reasonable. He was busy but kind.
Seemed like his goal was to weed people out of the class instead of teach them the material.
The class is not easy but not the hardest either. Do the extra credit and just be ready to draw. He likes to pull pranks.
Decent teacher. Flies through material and expects you to have a thorough understanding by quizzes every Friday. You pretty much teach yourself, and the material is hard, especially around the second and third unit. However, if you study hard, and study often the class is not bad. He does give a lot of extra credit!
This class is essentially a teach yourself and memorization class. While he likes to explain concepts in class, it is basically read off the slides. You can miss multiple classes as long as you look over the slides. Never went to him for help, just focused on memorizing everything. He did give lots of extra credit which is nice for quizzes.
Dr. Johnson is a good teacher and relies heavily on lectures. Be prepared to read and study the PowerPoints, as this class is mainly memorization. The material can be hard at times but as long as you study a little bit each day, you should be ok. Dr. Johnson also gives out many opportunities for extra credit :)
I love Dr. Johnson's method of teaching. He gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit and plenty of practice/ examples. His lectures are straightforward and he prepares you for the tests/ quizzes. You must put in the work and effort, but he's a great professor! (No reading either yippee)
Professor Johnson really cares about his students!! He provides plenty of extra credit opportunities and really wants you to succeed in his class.
CHM 341 is a lecture heavy course that covers a lot of different topics. Be prepared to memorize and bring back knowledge from Gen Chem and Organic Chem. Dr. Johnson acknowledges that his class is a lot but his lectures are straight forward. He is willing to repeat concepts and clearly explains problems! There is also a lot of bonus opportunities!
Dr. Johnson is an amazing professor. He truly cares about his students' success and explains biochemistry very clearly. Biochemistry is a challenging subject, but he provides ample resources to learn the material and has many bonus opportunities.
Gives a lot of extra credit.
Dr. Johnson's class has been one of my favorites so far this semester! I really enjoy the pre-lectures before class, and there are so many extra credit opportunities to help along the way for each quiz and test. If you are willing to watch the PLs and pay attention to the in-class lectures, you will thrive in his class!
Biochem is a notoriously hard class, but Dr. Johnson does his best to make the material as easy to follow as possible. He offers copious extra credit to both help you learn and bolster your grade, which has been very helpful.
The class is hard but Dr. Johnson makes sure you pass as long as you pay attention in lectures, do the extra credit, and work hard at understanding. There's no slacking off in this class, but he rewards you for hard work.
easy class if you're willing to put in work outside of class. offers a lot of extra credit
Hard professor, but gives a lot of extra credit especially for participation and giving a good rate my professor review.
Great teacher
Dr. Johnson is a great professor for Biochem. He understands the material is tough and hard to understand, so he tries to acknowledge that during lectures. During his lectures, he moves very quickly so you must pay attention. He is somewhat hard to reach outside of class as he does not have many office hours.
Dr. Johnson is very passionate about his teachings in Biochemical Sciences. He wants his students to do well and will ensure you understand class material if you input work. Yes, there is a good deal of quiz prep and homework, but all of the work in this course is very constructive and is meant for you to do and to help you remove any confusion etc
The work is simple and grading criteria is well defined, but it is a good bit of work. It's relatively easy to get the points as long as you maintain your understanding of the topics. He gives lots of extra credit so easy to pad your grade. Overall, its a biochem course so expect studying on top of the homework and lots of opportunities.
Quizzes are a bit difficult, but doable with good study tactics. Gives a lot of extra credit which is very helpful. Pay attention in class and to the PL/Final Thoughts and you will be fine.
Biochemistry is a difficult class that is content heavy, so you have to put in the work to do well. There are weekly quizzes and many assignments, but they are good practice for the exams. Make sure to study the PowerPoints (especially the Paul slides), and do all the examples/practice problems. There are tons of easy extra credit points.
Dr. Johnson is a super chill professor. Everything is really designed to help you. He posts all of the lectures from the class and will post lectures from former years so you can look ahead. There is ample extra credit as he believes that effort should be rewarded. Quizzes and Exams are NOT EASY, but he has practice and help for you to succeed.
Biochemistry is a difficult class overall. However, Dr. Johnson want his students to do well in the class. He gives a lot of extra credit. He does move very quickly through slides but as long as you pay attention and put in effort you will do good in the class.
Dr. Johnson wants us to do well in his class. While the quizzes and exams are difficult you can get a good grade if you use all the extra credit he provides and stay on top of the material. His study guides and regular practice problems also help make sure everyone is on track. He adds a good bit of humor that helps keep things interesting.
Dr. Johnson uses a lot of extra credit in his class, and he genuinely wants you to succeed. The class is tough but it is doable.
Dr. Johnson is very articulate when explaining chemistry concepts. He records all lectures and records optional pre-lectures. Attendance is not mandatory. Quizzes are given weekly. He is very accommodating and reasonable. Overall, I have enjoyed his class. Also, there are lots of extra credit opportunities.
He isn't an easy professor, but he is very fair. What he asks of you is very reasonable and doable if you put in the effort and time. There are also lots of opportunities for extra credit. One of his biggest cons I would say is that he does not respond to emails.
I honestly like Dr. Johnson's teachings. He does really well with his powerpoints and lectures and it really does show that he loves biochemistry. I would take his class again. He gives a lot of extra credit which helps too!
This class is tough, but I think Dr.Johnson does a good job at making the material easier to digest. There is a lot of out-of-class studying but the extra credit that we're given really helps in cases of quizzes and exams. Class attendance is really important here because the lectures cover important information needed for quizzes/exams.
He wants you to pass so he gives lots of extra credit opportunities. It's a hard class but thats to be expected for Biochem. He does go really fast so you need to do a lot outside of class.
Dr. Johnson is a very fun and engaging professor. Admittedly sometimes his voice is so calm that it's easy to nod off, but the actual content is fun! Still taking the course but I'm on the track to getting an A if I continue my due diligence. He makes it very easy to gain opportunities to keep our grades nice and neat.
This course is hard, but if you follow his pre-lectures, review notes after each class, and SPEAK UP you will have enough understanding of the material to do well on the exams. He does not try to trick you on the exams, you genuinely have everything you need, its just a matter of putting in the effort for it.
Very interesting man. Good professor, just not my teaching style. Very relaxed, nice, easygoing. The material was hard, and I didn't always understand his explanations, but most other people seemed to. He does give opportunities for extra credit, which is a lifesaver, and helps you to really know the material. But he does go fast in lecture
He gives lots of extra credit so take advantage of the opportunities. He doesn't want his students to fail and looks out for their best interests. The pre lectures and final thoughts are also really helpful! Overall great professor.
Really cares about student success, and encourages participation. he gives a lot of extra credit, which helps to deviate from the hard tests.
Although biochemistry is a tough course due to the sheer amount of content, Dr. Johnson makes it more understandable by explaining the more difficult parts during lectures. With the availability of review sessions and plenty of extra credit opportunities, Dr. Johnson cares about the student's success and is always available to answer questions.
I like to call Johnson "The Flash". He zooms through lecture and power points so its easy to fall behind. He gives tons of extra credit which is great but there are also weekly quizzes with tons of information to cover, alot of memorizing material which could have been save for upper biochem, and his required homework takes forever.
Dr. Johnson knows a lot about his subject and tries his best to explain the concepts in the class. His lectures are pretty fast and he doesn't linger on topics so it can sometimes be difficult to keep up. He does a very good job and giving partial credit and giving lots of extra credit opportunities.
Dr. Johnson explains things simply, with a decent splash of humor, and makes an effort to meet you where you're at in terms of comprehending the material. There's a lot of front loading for this course, as it helps to read the textbook chapters and watch the pre-lectures before class, as well as a fair amount of homework but I enjoyed his class.
Dr. Johnson is a quality professor. Biochem is a challenging subject but Dr Johnson does a lot to help you understand the topics. He gives a nice amount of extra credit which helps. I recommend him for anyone that needs to take Biochem.
Dr. Johnson gives content heavy lectures that are hard to keep up with, as the course topic itself has a lot of information. His lectures are really just him reading off the slides, which does not help the students' understanding. He seems like a nice guy and gives a ton of extra credit, but he is not my favorite professor.
Dr. Johnson is a professor who knows his subject but expects you to know it as well. The pre-lecture videos and material provide an excellent start to newer material for the class. However, there is a certain level of expectation from him. He expects you to know, based on the PLs, what he is talking about on the day of the lecture.
Dr. Johnson is good professor that wants the student's to succeed. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities and encourages students to participate and ask questions. Lectures are fast and contain lots of information, but that's the nature of the subject.
Dr. Johnson gives the most extra credit of any professor I have ever had so take advantage of it. The class is not easy but definitely manageable, he post videos of the lecture which help also.
Dr. Johnson want's students to succeed, is very open to questions in class, and involves the class in his lectures with various questions and practice problems. The tests and quizzes are straight forward, though difficult, and he doesn't try to trick you into choosing the wrong answer. Be careful, he moves through the material very fast.
Dr. Johnson cares about his students. He provides us with many extra credit opportunities. He is a fast lecturer, so it is important to ask questions if you don't understand something. I found the pre-lecture videos that he provides to be very helpful. You must stay on top of your studying. It is a hard class, but manageable.
The course (Biochemistry 1) has been excellent so far. Prof. Johnson has taught it well and gives good feedback. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities both in class and outside of class. If I had to point out an issue it would be that this course is VERY content-heavy in the lectures. Just study the material and do not expect an easy A!
Pretty good professor. Lots of takehome and homework. Would take again.
He does go through the material pretty fast in class, so I would recommend going to office hours. We also have to take a quiz every week. He does give lots of extra credit opportunities in class and with the video lectures, which is a plus!
Dr. Johnson is an extremely confident and efficient teacher. As far as day-to-day, the class is pretty lecture heavy. Coming to class is not mandatory, but you will be lost if you don't. He is an extremely fair grader, and allows for plenty of opportunities for you to get extra credit if you are willing to put in work.
Dr. Johnson is a really accessible guy and is willing to work with you on assignments, just so long as you're willing to do them.
Dr. Johnson's lectures go very fast and he doesn't stay on one topic very long. He is also not very good at updating any changes in due dates online, so if you miss a class you won't know something has changed. He also doesn't do a very good job of explaining what he wants for certain assignments.
Slides are the main thing to pay attention to in the class. Make sure to know all the slides with Paul!
Dr. Johnson doesn't have mandatory attendance, but is a lecture heavy professor, so if you miss class, you will be lost. Dr. Johnson is a fair grader who provides many opportunities for extra credit, as well as posts many practice quizzes and exams. This class isn't terribly hard as long as you're willing to put in the work.
If you don't succeed in this class, its either because a) you really aren't trying or b) you're lazy. Come to class. Missed a class? Watch the online lecture. Dr. Johnson brings whimsy and enthusiasm to biochemistry and gives plenty of opportunities to succeed, including extra credit. He's awesome and just as difficult as other berry courses.
Dr. Johnson is an awesome professor and gives many different forms of practice for his exams including pre-lectures, final thoughts wrap up videos, and practice problems. He also offers extra credit for participation. The class is very content heavily with lots of net reactions and regulatory processes to memorize.
Dr. Johnson is a very kind and hilarious professor. I had him for Biochem 1 but be careful! Biochem 2 is a huge step up from 1... It realistically feels three times faster paced and more compact than CHM 341, so be warned that this is no light course! Study as much as you can outside of class... But also, don't be afraid and good luck!
He's really helpful! All resources are on Canvas, and his practice problems/ exams greatly help. There is a lotttt of opportunity for extra credit. We even got a group quiz and our final was optional! It's a good class for studying for the MCAT. I would take it again if given the chance.
Dr. Johnson is a nice person, and makes the course very laid back - However, this puts a lot of emphasis on your ability to understand and learn the material semi-independently for quizzes and exams. PowerPoint lectures weekly, plus quizzes on Fridays. One take home exam, the rest in class. High expectations for answers to get full points.
Very lecture heavy, quizzes given every friday, 4 exams throughout the semester. One exam was take-home though, and he gives plenty of extra credit throughout the semester. The slides are a little complex/content-heavy, so this course will require a lot of work out of class to study.
Dr. Johnson has the expectation for you to know a lot, but he presents it in an understandable way. A lot of my lower grades came from lacking a full conceptual knowledge, so completely on me. He really offers a lot of opportunities to do well and get your grade up. Very laid back.
Difficult content is difficult, not sure how to explain it other than. He expects you to know a lot but he gives you a lot of chances to do better inside and outside of class with take home and extra credit bonuses. Good guy, funny, makes the class as understandable as he can.
Dr. Johnson is a really great professor. He gives lots of extra credit, for example, if you watch pre-lectures, final thought videos, do practice exams, and participate in class. Overall he doesn't want you to fail so he will make sure students are getting the points they need.
This course is material heavy. Nothing can be done about that. Dr. Johnson's laid-back teaching style forces you to really take the helm of learning the material on your own, which has pros and cons.
Do the work and speak a lot; that's most of your grade security right there. There are assessments every Friday so you have to be up to date on the lectures. Basically it's pretty easy to get a routine with the class but the content can be challenging-- he knows that though so that's why you get the homework and the extra credit opportunities. 9/10
Great ability to lecture on the material and he had great knowledge. However, the subject was not my fo
This class is very lecture heavy! Dr, Johnson posts a lot of pre-lecture videos and gives out bonus points for participating in class. Take advantage of all of these opportunities and you'll be fine. The homework is very helpful, I would recommend doing the homework every night to keep up with the lecture material.
It was a great course and I would take it again for sure.
Dr. Johnson's class is completely based around your effort to learn, and there are many opportunities to raise your grade if you are willing to put in the effort to do them (take-home quizzes + exams, extra credit for in-class participation, and optional final exams). He is a very strong lecturer, and is willing to clarify material if necessary.
pretty much reads off the slides for lecture and goes wayyy fast, however lectures are recorded so you can go back. exams are fair, homework's helpful and he give A TON of extra credit. cares about you as a person and a student. he is hard to track down for office hours. he is very knowledgeable on the course matter and the content is interesting.
Dr. Johnson is a really good professor. He is very helpful and takes the time to answer any questions with detailed explanations. He also gives many opportunities for extra credit and his classes are overall very enjoyable. There is no way to bomb this class unless you genuinely just didn't try.
He's a good professor. The tests are challenging, but if you study and stay on top of the material, you'll be fine. You do have to put in the effort to get the grade you want, but he's supportive and willing to help if you ask.
He's alright, he makes candles, he's a vegetarian, fantastic DND character inspiration. Total stud. Slick af.
Dr. Johnson is a very fair professor while being a little harder on students than students are used to. He gives lots of extra credit and the final thought videos give you a better idea of what to focus on for exams and quizzes. You have to not try to do bad in his class.
Dr. Johnson is a cool dude. The material is very difficult, but he wants everyone to succeed. There are a couple of bad reviews on here, but based on me and other people in the class I have talked to, I think it's safe to say he has vastly improved his teaching style. I would recommend taking him for Biochem 1, and if you need it, Biochem 2.
N/A... He is the GOAT!
Dr. Johnson is a great professor. He explains the difficult subject of biochem as best as he can. He offer lots of extra credit that you should do.
Dr. Johnson really cares about his students and will reward you if you put effort towards this class. While this class is really material heavy, I found that breaking it down into chunks went a long way. Overall, I enjoyed it
Dr. Johnson makes it so that if you try you should get an A. Lack of effort is the only reason to do bad in this class. I have had him for both biochems and chm 109 lab and he has been great.
I had to work extremely hard; however, Dr. Johnson is one of the most generous professors with extra credit & additional resources. I stopped reading the textbook, but as long as you listen to the lectures, you're fine. He is passionate - one of the most understanding professors I've ever had. Please get to know him as a person too, he's great.
Dr. Johnson wants his students to succeed. Biochemistry is a hard class that is content heavy, but he gives many opportunities for extra credit. The pre-lectures and practice problems help solidify the material. There are weekly quizzes, so this class requires lots of studying.
Dr. Johnson was a fantastic instructor. They explained concepts clearly, cared about student success, and offered lots of extra credit opportunities. I learned a lot and would highly recommend their class!
Professor Johnson's class is very thorough, and there is a large focus on his lectures, which contain information that students need to know to succeed in the class, and they cover more than just what he has on his PowerPoint slides. Thankfully, the lectures are recorded and available to be reviewed if students missed a lecture. There is homework.
Students were caught cheating in this class, and what he offered for them was to take the final and use their final grade towards the test they cheated on. Meanwhile, for those of us who did not cheat, he is not offering us this. He skims through slides and rushes through lectures. So if you want to teach yourself, take him.
