He acclerates and teaches hard materials. The only thing he likes to do is cursing. Don't take it unless you have the gut to do it.
I had this professor for my first semester. He is a very fun professor, who can make me stay awake in a 8:00am class. Just study and you can def. get an A!
AWFUL DON"T TAKE HIM HE DOES NOT HELP!
He expects you to learn everything yourself, and then comes to class and barely goes over anything. He doesn't explain things clearly, talks fast and excels the material in the class that makes things much more confusing. He also tries to crack jokes that aren't appropriate and is offensive.
He's funny, great, and really improved as a teacher(compared to all the previous reviews) he makes me want to go to class, and I always have a smile on my face leaving class. He knows what he's talking about, and is able to convey his points in a clear yet interesting way. He's also very accessible, and left his cell number on our course syllabus.
He is not a good teacher at all, you will have to learn everything yourself. He tries to be funny in class but he is not funny at all. He is rude and gets angry when students don't understand the concepts he has been teaching for years. He does not explain things and gives little partial credit. NEVER take one of his classes.
I would not take his class ever again. He's literally a terrible teacher that just expects you to know everything there is about math. Simply reads his slides even though he posts them to blackboard. Unless to go to his class. Claimed attendance wasn't mandatory but then started giving in class quizzes.
Quincy does not care about your success. He does not enjoy his job and would rather flaunt his ego than help you learn. I question if he is qualified to teach mathematics. His work is filled with errors and he takes no responsibilty for it. He teaches math off slides to cover up his lackluster teaching ability. He would rather see you fail.
I struggled in this introductory course for no reason. His style of teaching was not sufficient and he would get frustrated when no one knew how to answer any of his questions. Attendance and homework were not mandatory and it did not affect the total grade but not coming to class and not completing the homework made it much harder to pass.
Tries to push any anyone who is on the fence to withdraw so he can have a smaller class since he does not like to do extra work. Makes it known how bothered he is to not be department coordinator by mentioning how he is the only one with a PHD thus deserves the position. Not in my pay grade if you ask him hw questions.
Here it is short and easy for Quincy Loney. He doesn't like to answer questions, he always has the worst attitude and it is demoralizing as a student, and he rather just show off his ego. For the sake of your GPA, take another professor's class.
Absolutely terrible math teacher. Makes more mistakes than the students do and is constantly correcting himself. He works at his own speed, meaning that the class is usually confused on whats going on and offers little help for those struggling. Take Mckenzie instead, don't bother wasting time and money in his class.
If you are a SOM student or trying to get into it, take my advice and DO NOT TAKE QUINCY. You will struggle more than students in Mckenzies. Read the reviews below, dont waste your time in this class.
Quincy is a talented academic who will drop everything to help you out-he actually hands you his phone number (for Math help). This course requires discipline (like any other Math course). *Show up* with a *real attempt* at the assigned section, and he'll help you iron out what's left. Anyone who tells you otherwise didn't follow these basic steps.
There aren't enough characters allowed to describe how horrible he is. He does not care for his students. He belittles you if you ask questions, yet gets mad if you don't. Always talks about how he deserves to be head of the math department, yet shows no effort in his lectures. Hardly fulfills job as a professor. Learned everything from textbook
First class he said "My goal is to do the least amount of work as possible" which perfectly describes his class. He expects you to be a pro in the material before class and gets angry when you ask questions. Sometimes he didn't even know how to solve them himself, but makes sure to flaunt his own success in the field. Look for another section!!
Very knowledgeable professor but definitely has an attitude. He clearly intimidates his students, which should not be his role as a teacher. He is accessible outside of class but not the best at explaining things because he usually skips steps.
I had loney for a day. Im Sure hes not a very bad teacher at all, but just wanted to share the vibe of the experience I got. To me, he seemed like he didnt really want to do work and seemed very hostile/aggreasive when answering questions. He lets u type in priv chat so u domt have to ask qurstions to the group. Very messy teaching style and notes.
First couple weeks of class went by and his lectures never made any sense. They were not consistent, making everyone in the class confused and lost. He then would get frustrated when questions were asked and would call out students. Tests became class discussion oriented after we started watching other lectures, punishing us for trying to get help.
I didn't listen to people say that he hates questions. He hates them and will hate you for asking; prepare to get sighed at. If you take his class, do the practice problems. 108 is not an intro course and you work HARD in this class. He does not know how to encourage participation and his exams are impossible. I do NOT recommend.
This guy does not care for students. Steer clear. Save yourself stress.
Stay away. Harsh grader and assignments are difficult. Teaching style doesnt work for me.
Worst professor I have ever had in my life. I would never wish this upon my worst enemy. Makes you want to tear your hair out.
Do not choose his section. Terrible professor.
Truthfully I do not understand all of these negative reviews. I think he's a pretty good professor, and he does make himself available outside of class. I think many of these reviews come from students that do not show up to class.
Has an attitude when students ask questions, especially during "review sessions" as if the point of the review session isn't to ask questions. At the beginning of the course I figured he had a bad day or two but his attitude has persisted. One time I asked him how he knew knew to use a certain technique and he said "cause I made the question." ok..
Professor Loney wants you to succeed. If you sees a genuine effort at you trying, you will be rewarded. Yes, linear algebra is difficult but Loney will give it his all to make sure you understand. He is definitely a good professor to take it with and you will do well if you take the class seriously and ask him for help when needed.
he's honestly not a bad prof, he teaches well. the reason i gave him a low rating is bc of his HARSH grading. i just pulled an all nighter studying what's on the exam & i get the questions right but he will give me 0 credit bc no work is shown. ?????? in math, there are questions that don't need work, just for u to understand the concept. unfair af
Dr. Loney puts in a lot of extra effort to make himself available for extra help outside the class hours. While I didnt take advantage of this too often I found it helpful when I did.
Dr Loney is very motivated and gives his all to help you succeed his classes are very easy to get a good grade in if you put in the work.
PLEASE dont take linear algebra with him. Ive given up going to office hours because he just ridicules all of my questions. Check the notes why didnt I think of that ! Thank you ! I switched to pass/fail a few hours ago because there was no way I was getting over a C.
Less than helpful makes you feel rotten. Take this with anyone else and use tutoring.
Quincy has a deep understanding of mathematics (so you can't fake anything) but his trial by fire teaching style helped me really learn the material. I'd suggest to anyone who wants to take higher-level math classes to take linear algebra with Quincy, as you'll be much better prepared under his guidance. He is easy to contact and a great resource!
I really enjoyed this class. Quincy gives students his cell if they need help outside class. I went to office hours and he was helpful there as well. If youre willing to put in the effort, hell support you throughout the course.
LIterally any other section would be a step up.
First off, you should take rate my professors with a grain of salt always. I've had teachers with 3.5+ averages and they were genuinely horrible teachers. Anyways, Loney is a very fair professor. What you give in is what you'll get out. Put in the work, utilize his office hours/phone number, and you will pass linear algebra no doubt.
Take with anyone else!
Very poor in the way he teaches. Doesn't mandate attendance but whether you're there or not it doesn't matter because of the way he teaches. During review sessions he doesn't even treat you like students he basically belittles you and makes you feel stupid.
I think a lot of these negative reviews have to be fake. He's not the best professor in the world, but I think he teaches the subject well.
Class is difficult but what you put in is what you get out. He knows a lot about the subject so you cant bs anything. If you miss class it will be hard to follow along and understand the material.
Rough class good teacher
You will need to study a lot for this 304, but Loney's notes make it a lot easier and concise. He rushes a bit in class but also goes in depth with theorems and such. He is funny and cracks lots of jokes which def makes the class better. Loney is definitely one of the better teachers for 304 to take.
Dr. Loney is a very smart man. He knows this stuff. However he is too smart. He goes so fast and makes it so difficult to learn. He does this his way, and most of the time is way is not the easiest way of solving a problem. I would recommend not taking this class with him. He is a great man and have good intentions but he is a terrible teacher.
Professor is hilarious. He makes sure students phrase their questions correctly which is good...you have to be patient and not mistake it for rudeness, he cares a lot about his students, so don't be afraid to ask questions even if you get a little cheek with it. Otherwise very friendly and humane guy. He goes fast so study study study
Linear Algebra sucks. Quincy Doesn't. He cares about you, which makes all the difference. To some he comes off as rude, but I found his class enjoyable. He's a good *person* (unlike another prof for this course), and to me that means the world. I may not have passed, but that didn't stop me from enjoying my time with him. Thank you Dr. Loney.
thought he was mean and rude at first but then met the other linear algebra professors who were somehow worse. he cares about his students but has a strange attitude. if u attend every single class and study a lot u will pass otherwise u will not
Great professor, definitely one of the better professors for linear algebra. It's a hard class and there's a lot of self-studying and extra work needed to do well in it, but Dr. Loney offers a lot of help and genuinely cares about his students and the material. Also, hilarious dude. Classes are way more fun because of this. Def take him if possible
If you study and go to every lecture you'll do fine in this class. His exams require you to have an in-depth understanding of the material. Although he may come off as rude to some, professor Loney is always willing to help his students and genuinely wants them to succeed. Linear algebra is tough and I would recommend Loney as a teacher.
Linear where you just row reduce for a semester is easy. Linear in 304 is difficult. Dr Loney does everything he can to make the class understandable, and even wrote his own notes and textbooks to do so. He's hilarious, engaging, and caring. I recommend taking his class over any of the other profs, he's one of the best in the department. DO THE HW!
funny dude, good content. Class is hard but the bad reviews are people who didn't expect to have to do work in a high level math class.
Sometimes seemed a little annoyed during office hours. Always willing to help but seemed like it was pain when actually giving the help. If he makes a mistake in the slides he'll admit and make sure you know its a mistake. Funny person tho. Sometimes he skips steps/doesn't explain something because its basic math which makes it easy to get lost.

Professor Loney is hilarious cares about his students. His attitude can come off as rude, but he really had no ill-intentions. This being said, he isn't great at explaining concepts, so you really have to push with your questions if you want a good answer. Study after EVERY lecture and prepare for vocabulary quizzes. Great person, mid professor imo
Content will be hard regardless of the professor but he didn't make it any easier. He added a lot of stress and comes off as rude and aggressive. He calls you out if you're late. Not very understanding and a bit condescending. Quizzes are the last 10 mins of class. His slides move a bit fast but he has them all on bright space.
I'm glad I took Math 108 with him. His teaching is easy to follow + he does his best to make the early class engaging. I almost withdrew bc I thought I wouldn't pass, but he reassured me in office hours I still could. I came out with a C+ (I took it pass/fail in Fall) but that's not his fault, I'm just bad at math. He is very responsive to emails
Made me hate linear. Excessively hard grader. throws around random grades
if you tend to struggle in math and need things explained multiple times, he's scary to talk to. he is always open to helping people though. he is engaging in his lectures, but i recommend going to UTS for tutoring. also, this class is very vocab heavy, so be sure to keep up with it or else you won't understand what he's saying.
Should be fired
Professor Loney is a strange case. He has the makings of a good professor, he's funny, tries to keep the class engaged, and is very knowledgeable in Linear Algebra. However, he has a very bad habit of antagonizing students. Then he wonders why nobody asks questions or goes to his office hours.
This class felt like a warzone, every week classmates would go MIA (dropout). But Professor Loney made the class manageable and entertaining. His tests were very hard but if you make sure to read the textbook and do the Test Review's you will be fine. Very helping and held office hours all the time.
I dont know what people's issues are with Professor Loney this was a difficult course just like any other but his RMP should not drive you away from this course I learned a lot and he cared about all the students in his class.
Professor Loney is one of the finest math professors at Binghamton. For 304 there is no better professor, his sections score the highest on the exams and that is because he pushes his students to learn the material and not memorize it. Loney is a great guy who puts in work for his students and despite his tough guy persona cares for his students.
the material is hard and the quizzes suck, but he seems like a chill guy. he goes through material pretty fast and says after every exam that his section performed the best, which may be a testament to the quality of his teaching or the lack thereof of the other professors for the class. study hard to get a good grade in the class
He's funny and makes the content easy to understand. Nothing in the class is legitimately difficult or complicated as long as you remember what to do for each type of question. If you can do the practice problems in the lectures you'll be fine for the exams.
Not the prof's fault but, MATH 108 has a ton of content and it can be mildly overwhelming. However, Loney does attempt to improve the class by cracking jokes (some not necessary or wanted at 9:00 a.m) and also attempts to make content less confusing. Half the class drops in the middle of the semester and the rest take it pass/fail. Good luck.
Many people think he's mean or he's intimidating but this isn't the case. The course itself is difficult and fast paced so i think some of the hatred on the course also goes onto him. He is very funny and caring. He also goes out of his way to help students and would answer any questions we had. Difficult course but great professor.
Loney has a weird humor that he perceives as funny but is not. Trying to approach him is the equivalent to conversing with a brick wall garden not knowing if what you said was right or wrong. Be prepared to study a lot on your own and having practice exams that ABSOLUTELY LOOK NOTHING like the actual exam (which honestly is a shame).
Loney is the BEST linear teacher. He is extremely organized and a great lecturer but I had to study a lot outside of class just to solidify the info. His tests and quizzes are very hard cuz he always tries to trick you to make sure ur paying attention. He can be passive aggressive and do too much sometimes but always willing to help if u ask.
best linear lecturer but he makes his quizzes/exams harder than other professors do. if you are concerned about getting a very high grade, take easier prof and get loneys notes from one of his students, otherwise he is good (if you failed with him you would've failed with any prof)
I would say you gotta do a lot of independent study to succeed in his class, but overall he's a very chill guy, does his job well.
A great lecturer - if you just pay attention during lectures (which is easy with Loney) and take some notes, you will already have a great shot at passing the class, because a lot of the class is memorization.
Everything said about him is true, I dropped the course after the first lecture and switched to a different professor with a higher rating. He claimed he had 0 students pass and seemed more confused than the class, please the 8 am class is worth it rather than failing a 100 class.
Professor Loney is great. BUT the content is hard.
Loney is a good guy with good intentions, but he isn't a good teacher. His notes and lecture dive heavily into theory and vocabulary, with very little concrete examples. So when it comes time to apply those theories onto real questions you're screwed. Also his practice exams look nothing like the actual exam. Do not take if you're not a math major.
Dr. Loney is such a knowledgeable and caring professor! He may come off as intimidating and tough, but he is truly very caring and hilarious. He knows what he is talking about and can explain difficult concepts very well. He is very well respected and worked very hard to get to where he is. If you have the chance to get to know him, don't miss it!
Professor Loney can't explain concepts well, doesn't care about his students. You'll be lost most of the time. If you want to do well in his class, you have to self study everything. Avoid him if you want to learn math and do well.
Linear algebra has a lot of vocab associated with it, so be prepared to study and memorize what each definition means. The way he teaches is in a manner that you don't need to read the textbook at all. The way he teaches concepts is very understandable, and he tries to ensure that the class as a whole is understanding concepts.
tests are hard, teaches material very well but be prepared to study a lot.
nope. don't
Prof. Loney has high expectations of students and you get back what you put in. The class and material are inherently challenging, if you're there expecting to be able to get by without studying, that's on you. Goes above and beyond for those who show up, ask questions, and put in the work. Genuinely cares, one of the best professors I've had yet.
Great lecturer and cared about how his students did. Can be hard on students but only because hes passionate about the subject and cares about his students success. I'm looking to have him in future math courses.
every lecture with him was seeing what fit hes gonna throw next. honestly sad how much he lets his feelings get the best of him. this is a uni lecture not a highschool class. holds grudges against students he doesnt like. good teacher but going to an 8.30 class to watch a grown man act like a wining kid was exausting. wrd limit just dont.
Loney is a very hit or miss professor. If you want to sit back and do nothing and get a free A, dont take him. If you can't handle criticism, dont take him. Overall, if you just pay attention, study and ask questions, the class becomes that much easier. Really cares about his students and always trashes on the math department, which means hes good.
da goat. genuinely cares about his students, extremely helpful if you ever need to ask him anything. class is a lot of work though u wont be able to freeload and bs ur way to a good grade
Took a course with him outside of Binghamton. He was very frustrating and threw tantrums like a kid, which made the learning environment uncomfortable. He also made racist jokes that were inappropriate and offensive just to be funny. Overall, I did not find the course productive or professional.
10 year old kid
Dr Loney is for sure one of the better professors I had. The class itself is a lot of information but he makes sure to teach it well and is usually open to questions during the lecture. He is available for office hours outside of class and offers many options to review for a test. Very funny guy and serious when he needs to be.
Math 108 is a difficult course because of its material and pacing; but Prof. Loney was a great teacher nonetheless. Certainly hard on students, and it's not easy by any measure, but he does a good job of explaining course material. Def go to tutoring before exams, and NOT an easy A, but go for it if you are down to show up and work hard.
This class is not an easy class; you'd have to take your time to learn the material on your own, do practice problems. However, he has office hours and tutors available outside of class and is always open to questions. If you have a question, just ask. Quizzes before the lecture are counted towards attendance. Overall, study and pay attention.
