Mr. **** loves history, it comes across in his teachings, but, late night class and history is not the most exciting subject, hard to stay awake sometimes. Not his fault
He is a very smart professor who knows his history but he doesn't convey it well and I spent most of the semester in a bored dreamlike state trying to stay awake. It probably didn't help that it was a late class but I don't recommend it!
Wonderful instructor! I enjoyed taking his History 150 class last semester and highly recommend him. It shows in his teaching that he has a passion for history. All around nice guy.
Very likable
Very easy class, he shows you the test the week before, bring your camera! Lectures are boring, you only need to study off of the test. Very nice and compassionate.
A tone of lectures but very interesting! Easy class, but hard to take a night.
Great course, even better teacher. Dr. **** is the best history instructor EVER!
Really nice guy. He only teaches night classes and he's not the most interesting guy but nice as hell and easy. If you can make it through a 3 hr. class I would highly recom. him.
Jolly fellow; laughs easily. Personality reminds me of Santa Claus. Tells you what questions will be asked on test, but there are lots of them. Can't complain - he's very nice and obviously loves history.
EASY!!! I failed every test and passed with a B. Make sure to do as much extra credit as possible to pass. He is very boring in class and use every min. of time, so expect to stay the whole time. Alot of people drop, but he passes everyone so wait it out. Don't need all the books just fallow lectures. He gives you the tests to study, but are hard.
Dr. D is the best. He's kinda boring and he keeps you the entire 3 hrs for the night class. however he is a nice guy and gives you the test the week before and lets you copy it. And his awesome outfits keep you coming back for more. Who knew that lime green and powder blue went together so well?
Very good teacher. Probably the most knowledgeable instructor that I have ever had in any subject.
All I remember about this guy is that he wears taps on the bottom of his shoes (like tap dancing shoes). We asked him about it and he does not want the bottom of his shoes to wear out. All during lecture you hear tap, tap, tap....tap.
Dr. D is the best! He's obviously passionate about history and that reflects on his teaching which in turn made me intrested in his lectures. He wants to see every one of his students pass his class and will do everything he can to help you understand. Take this guys class, you won't be sorry.
EASY A!!!!!!!!!
He is really nice and will give you a passing grade! He is always late though. He shows you the test before you need to take it so it makes things easier. Attendence doesn't really factor much into your grade though, some students missed alot and still passed with a B or C. Don't expect to get out early, really nice guy.
Great teacher! For HIST 111& 112 u need a Reynolds book &a book titled Out of Many. The Reynolds book is crucial make sure you get it. The other book you'll use once at most Don't bother paying store price i have a copy with loose pgs but it doesn't matter bcuz ur only going to need it a few times Email me if your interested in buying it for cheap!
Dr. Dyke is the BEST! College's need more instructors like him. He is very passionate about teacing, extremely knowledgeable and pure! There is no reason why not to get an "A," because he gives you a study guide with all the questions that are going to be on the test. And he does not believe in failing. He grades on the curve! Highly recommended
Great teacher. He was a little unorganized but he is a very nice man.
Very nice teacher but goes off on tangents a lot. He's passonate about what he's teaching but most of it doesn't matter for the tests. The questions in the Reynolds book are on the test a lot so that helps. Hard to stay awake all 3 hours sometimes and tests can be hard but he grades on a curve!
Dr Dyke is a really nice teacher. I took him for summer and it was super easy! The only problem was the high school kids that wouldn't shut the hel* up! There were 4 tests and about 95% of the questions are in the reynolds book. 2 essay question (grades very hard on these!)and some lecture, glossary, and footnotes questions but very minimal
Very nice guy, I will highly recommend him. Its an easy "A" class. He basicaly tells you exactly whats going to be on the test. If you are trying hard then He doesn't believe in failing you. Very fair instructor. Take him you will not regret just make sure you show up to class everyday that all you need to worry about.
He is really a nice guy but does tend to make things really dry. Also 2 projects are given out every semester and the only way to earn an A is to actually do them. I still do not understand his grading system. He makes it extremly complicated.
Honestly he is SUPER nice but he is SUPER BORING i HATED going to his class one minute felt like 2 hours NO JOKE!!! he does know what he is talking about but honestly i would not want anyone to go through the tourture!! in the begining there were 30 of us & in the end there were only 6 of us... but he is an easy grader!!
Very nice guy, but a complete mess. He is almost always late (30 min). If you dont wait for him, he'll mark you absent. Extremely unorganized to the point where we had to tell him what chapter we were on. He is an easy A because he ends up realizing its his fault for screwing up the whole class scheduele.
He'd come in about 30 mins, maybe even an hour, late. Then he says we should try to understand that he comes from LA blah, blah, blah, & that we're required to wait because of the "late clause" in his syllabus.Easy A though bcoz ALL the questions are from the chap reviews of the book.Essays are hard but he gives the questions a few days before exam.
Not enough time for tests. Look elsewhere for the easy grade
Dont know what everyone else is talking about. This was not an easy class. Im normally good at essays, but since we have to take them the second part of our exam..I forgot everything! Very nice guy though...always at least 20 mins late.
HARD!!!!! unreasonable demands on your time. He is very understanding and makes changes to accomodate but NEVER take him with a PACE class... ugh.... I hate political science even more.
I love him, HE IS AWESOME!!!!! =D
He is awesome! I took him for both 101and 102 ... got an A on both! He is an easy teacher but you still have to work for you grade. Very understanding and accomodating. He can be a bit confusing and hard to undrestand some times. I highly recommend him ;)
Dr. Dyke is a great teacher I took him for PoliSci150 and I am currently taking him for USHIST112. He is hard, but works with the student and offers lots of extra credit to help you with your grade if you need it. I totally recomend him. I enjoy his class and plan on taking him for HIST111. He is very understanding.
I am in class as I write this. He is late, but he allows you to be late. You can come in late, as long as you are here before 8 or before he takes attendance you get credit for being here. He talks very slow, but loves what he is talking about. If you have no life and NEED this class, take it at night for 3 hours!
I had him for Political Science 150 and he is the BEST!!! You can get a good grade as long as you show him that you actually care about your grade. My friends and I all got A's. We learned a lot and enjoyed every class. Dr. Dyke is truly a great man/teacher. And he gives a ton of extra credit!!
He is a great teacher, just study and show up to class. He is passionate for what he does. I recommend taking him. Also he offers extra credit.
He is not the most interesting teacher but in saying that his class is fail proof! I honestly believe you have to try to fail his class. He offers a lot of extra credit and even gives out study guides. Definitely going to take him again.
Dr. Dyke is a great teacher. A student would be lucky to have him, especially ones that do not try particularly hard. Evene if you fail most of his tests you will most likely get a C. His grading is based upon four tests only with a huge curve. He also offers extra credit which is really helpful. He loves history and is really passionate.
Dr. Dyke is probably the most laid back professor at CoC. He's definitely the teacher for someone that doesn't want to put forth maximum effort. Very nice guy, but is always late and a little unorganized. If you can't pass his class, you should rethink the possibilities of a college education.
I love Dyke! He's a very laid back teacher, and there is no possible way you can fail his class. As long as you do the study guides, you will do great on his tests.
I took this online class for winter 2014. I would highly recommend Dr. Dyke and his class without a doubt. Fast paced and a lot of material to cover in a few weeks but your are fully prepared to take tests. Responded to all my emails within hours.
Excellent teacher! Very passionate about material. Easy going, good personality, and very understanding. Easy grade but I'd you or in work, also easy A. Beside his running late and disorganization, he is the best teacher o have had at COC. Highly recommended! A+++
Love this guy. chillest teacher ever. If you fail his class seriously think ur life over. Awesome teacher chill on tardies but don't be absent. Books are on the expensive side but buy them tests are straight out of them like same questions same answers.
OMG CUTEST TEACHER EVER! I absolutely adored this guy, He is old school and his lectures are long, but as long as you attend, show interest, and don't miss any tests you are in a good position to pass. Great teacher highly recommended.
I took Mr. Dyke online over the winter in it was a breeze.I had never took a winter class in didn't know what to expect but he was great.Easy grader in Easy to pass.I don't See how u can fail his class.I would for sure recommend him anytime.
I am in the middle of this class for 2nd half of Summer. Definitely need the book. No powerpoint lectures. Exams are from the study guides professor provides and the answers are all in the Oakes book in order as the questions appear. Responds to emails within 24 hours. Class is an Easy A if you read the chapters and study guides.
R. Dyke is cool teacher. His lectures are long and boring, but the class is easy. Only for tests, he gives questions for the test and you have to find it in a book. One day of reading before every test and you should do fine. Tests were done through the blackboard, so open book. He curves grades very generously, the worst grade in my class was B.
Doctor Dyke is an amazing teacher! I was at risk of failing and he helped through the process of the extra credit. His tests are quick and a lot for the short term winter semester I took with him. But all in all he is an amazing guy and always answers emails back as fast as he can.
I took Prof. Dyke class for the winter term and this teacher saved my butt! I recommend reading and staying on top of your reading and the discussions. I was doing super poor but I still read and did everything I could. I thought I was going to fail and he assured me that I can still pass! and I did! He's the best!
really enjoyed this class. such a genuine man. he will definitely work with you on a grade that you are willing to achieve. expects potential from students but also completely understands and reasons with his students. 10/10 would recommend
This teacher is very good. Here are specifics I can tell you: 1) He gives a lot of extra credit 2) very understandable guy 3) he doesn't fail anyone so that's a good thing to know 3) His test are kinda challenging but he does give a curve in the class
This man is the sweetest guy ever! His test are super essay the answers are in one of the books and he gives you a study guide and they are all the same exact answers on the test. You show up and he lectures the whole time. You don't need to take notes. I always brought hw from other classes to work on in class. He doesn't let anyone fail his class
An amazing and caring professor. He gave everyone a chance to pass and provided extra credit when you really want that A. As long as you respect him, he'll respect you! 10/10 recommend!
He is a nice guy, but in class felt like a waste of time. The tests were open book, but there if there is 200 questions, the answers are throughout 80 pages, and the test online is timed? Open book is meaningless. I studied and compiled notes for three days and still got a D on the test. I never study (and still pass tests). Wouldn't recommend.
If you don't pass this class it's simply because you didn't study or didn't care. He's a very educated man from USC and while his class may be boring and lecture-heavy, his class is clear and simple. He practically gives you the answers to the tests, which are 100 questions each. He cares about you passing. Always extra credit as well.
His tests are extremely long and timed. He doesn't even give you enough time to read the questions and answer choices, let alone answer. The curve and extra credit are the only things that helped me pass.
This class was so easy. Took it over the Spring and there were only 4 discussion posts and 5 tests. 1 is an essay that you get to see the questions beforehand so all you have to do is copy and paste your answers. The other 4 were multiple choice. He gives you a study guide that if you complete, has all the answers to the test. Easiest class ever.
He was not prepared for the first day of ONLINE class. all his due dates were wrong, because the syllabus was from last summer, never responded to emails and never got any feed back on our discussions board. he makes you read lost of chapters weekly online tests are DIFFICULT and timed. get ready to WORK for your grade
This was a 1 month small summer class. He straight up said he's going to curve our grades since it's a small class. He is unprepared, reads off the book, and has long lectures. But he does know his stuff. His study guides are the exams and the answers are on the book. Doesn't mind if your on your phone. Watched the NBA Finals, EASY A.
Really difficult class. The Syllabus was never up to date, assignments were without clear instructions. The tests were extremely hard, questions were hardly ever about the textbook chapters, timed unfairly. The biggest issue: very hard to communicate with professor! Get ready to read a lot, receive no feedback on hw, and work for your grade.
I took his 112 online class this summer, and he was not prepared at all. He did not upload a syllabus until multiple people asked him. He rarely answers emails. The week's study materials were always posted late, rather than on Mondays. There was a lot of material to read over in just one week, but it is doable with the study guides.
He is a very understanding teacher, and quick at responding to emails. I had this class during summer session online, and I wouldn't say it was easy but it was manageable. All the test are a 100 questions, but you can study and find all the answers in your two text books. Overall he is a great professor and I recommend you take him
You will need 2 textbooks and will read from both when you need to write a discussion. I honestly hate reading and have always had difficulties with History but this class was easy! He gives 2 discussion per week which are easy and 5 tests (drops the lowest grade). I expected a C in this class, and actually got an A at the end! He is the best!
Fairly easy class. So long as you do the readings via cogbooks and post to discussions you're good. The tests were difficult though.
Terrible class. He's not very accessible at all. It's insanely unorganized and he puts up the incorrect tests. Your grade depends on 3 tests (Exam 1, Essay Exam, Exam 2) and they aren't easy. Each is worth 100 and the class average was about 67. I ended up getting an A on my transcript -- not even sure how. Most students dropped out.
Took Prof. Dyke during the winter term in 111. This guy is hilarious and his lectures are actually interesting if you pay attention. The textbook is online and you can get full credit, even without answering the online questions (optional). There are a few tests which are easy since they are online and are based exactly on questions on the book.
I took his History 111 class over the winter. He does go on tangents quite often, but is extremely knowledgeable with the course material. You do have to buy the textbook online, where the test questions are exactly the reading questions. The tests are online as well. He is a tough essay grader but offers extra credit. Such a sweet and funny man!
Dr. Dyke is a great professor. Despite his occasional tangents, his lectures are actually interesting if you pay attention. The 2 tests are on canvas, and EVERY question comes from the textbook. The essay is graded harshly (average grade is about 75), so aim to get a 96 or above on both tests (VERY doable). Overall this man is a l e g e n d
I took the 5 week course and the syllabus did not match the material, neither did the questions or requirements he was grading by. It was out of date, he didn't even post his course to the calendar, as well as submitting the graded essay through the discussion text format??????? The cogbooks was updated, he was not!! Zero feedback on anything!!!!!
By far the worst Professor at College of the Canyons. Gave the syllabus a week late for a five week long class. Dates in the syllabus didn't match the dates on canvas. Will take at least a week to respond to your email. Dude is absolute garbage, has no business being a professor. Has no urge to help anyone. Don't take, you will regret it 3 days in
I took him for an online class, & it was difficult because he didnt lecture at all. Dyke didnt actually teach, he just gave the textbook to read. His class is graded on 4 exams, & he didnt grade my first exam until past the last day of the course. Also, he takes a week to respond to emails and got so many of the due dates wrong on Canvas.
Worst professor Ive had. Im a strong student and very organized, but Professor Dyke made it hard to do well in this class because of how disorganized he was with deadlines and how hard it was to reach out to him.
Absolutely awful class. Syllabus was released super late and the rest of the semester was just as disorganized.
terrible teacher i hated this class it gave me anxiety
I wish I could give a zero he didnt teach or lecture he just gave us the textbook and was like have fun kids
I really struggled in this class because Dr Dyke was hard to reach by email, took a long time to grade anything, and was confusing with the due dates for our assignments. Maybe he would have been a better teacher for in person classes, but for online classes it was not good at all.
dont take his class if u dont feel like crying yourself to sleep
When teaching an online course, Professor Dyke chooses not to teach at all. He gave us Cogbooks to take notes on and never lectured/taught us, little to no feedback when he grades your essay, and his tests are difficult. Terrible class. Do not take this class if you want to save your GPA. It doesnt matter how good of a student you think you are.
WORST CLASS EVER. ONLINE CLASS WAS THE WORST. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you are reading this it is a sign to not take this class. I am warning you. Or at least do not take him for an online class. But even then. Worst class I have ever taken.
if only we were allowed to give zero star ratings. thats how bad it was
Definitely not the best teacher out there, if there are other options for history class I suggest taking it. Main problems here were with the exams--difficult-- and with the communication issues with him. He seems to care about history, but is not good at actually being a teacher. I suggest finding someone else to take for history.
the prof sucked
This was an arduous course. There was little to no instruction on behalf of the professor. I really did not like the structure of this class. Coursework due dates, a week-late syllabus, poor communication, and insanely difficult and overcritical essay grading made this quite possibly one of the worst classes I have ever taken in my life.
dont take this class, professor dyke made it very hard due to his lack of organizational skills and he seems like a nice guy but not a good teacher (his class is everywhere, doesnt actually teach, hard to reach by email especially for an online class, hard tests, even harder essays)
He was very specific with guidelines on papers, but he never responded to emails. I emailed him 4 times and he responded once after I had already submitted the assignment in Canvas. Was not a good communicator at all and there was a lot of reading/discussions which was expected. I took the online course this summer(2020) :)
1) not good at communicating/never responds to emails 2) difficult exams 3) doesn't teach (took class during covid 19 online switch maybe he is just bad at online teaching)
I didnt like his class bc of the online switch it messed everything up. He was so hard to contact and by the time he responded to emails it was too late
the whole class was Cogbooks which sucked
If you would like a professor that doesn't grade the paper you did the first week until the class is completely over this is the one for you. Zero teaching, just gives you the textbook to read. As organized as a first grader, thats pushing it. Dyke should not be able to receive a rating over zero. This dude needs to go back to school himself.
He's nice enough, but he mostly lectured and they were usually really boring. I struggled to stay awake, and most of the class seemed to as well. He's also not great with tech, but that can help you out sometimes. He mostly read from the book, so if you fall asleep like I did make sure you do the reading.
Dr. Dyke is a great historian. That being said being a great historian does NOT give anyone the grounds to become a teacher. This man is well respected by anyone who appreciates history, like myself. BUT I was unable to learn much of anything from him. 90% of the class is Cogbooks, which is hours upon hours upon hours of just reading. Stay AWAY
Didn't like this class I had to drop it there's little work but the test was hard in the way you can only take it once and you can't even look at the wrong questions you answered. It's not worth taking.
Professor Dyke is not a professor you should take, I took his online course has not graded any work semester started in February. Our online class had to be given to another professor due the lack of Professor Dyke not being able to answer our emails, our hear us out. Dean had to be involved to get us out of this situation.
Professor R. Dyke's lectures can be dry, but the content is manageable. Using unstuck AI and the textbook helped me stay engaged and pass the class.
