Very boring, and unhelpful. Study guides for exams are unhelpful. The end of her class meetings remind me of the ending for Lord of the Rings Return of the King... you think its over but it just keeps on going. Do yourself a favor and take Mersmann.
Professor Gottfried is a wonderful teacher. She knows what she is talking about and is very helpful. I leaned a lot in her class.
This lady "rocks"! Once you think you have a spin on life you take this class and your world becomes suddenly clear! She provides a study guide to help you through her readings ... take notes during lecture. You will do fine!
Very biased with her own opinions. If you try to express any of your answers or ideas you might as well not do it because she will make to prove you wrong in front of the whole class unless that is of course you are just agreeing with her opinion.
Gottfried does not listen to other's ideas or opinions during class discussions. She does not explain what the format of the test will be like even when asked. She does not teach about gender roles, only about the oppressed people.
She's a little liberal and a bit dogmatic about her views, but I loved the subject material.
This teacher was a nightmare!!!! She is a total feminist (and i am a girl) and was not nice! Do not take this class with her. I did not look forward to her class at all!

Leave your opinion at the door, b/c she doesn't want to hear anything except what SHE thinks. I was excited about this class, thinking it would be an open forum to express thoughts about society, but i was WRONG! She's bitter at the world & hates men b/c she's divorced. Absolutely awful!
This class was "alright." She's VERY strict so turn off ur cell phones, or get kicked out. Don't fall asleep either! Her class was interesting. Tt makes u realize the things u were overlooking.
I like her class because you learn things that you never thought about. Only thing I don't like about her class is the useless study guide. If you study from it you will probably get no higher than a C because there are many extra things not on it. She is somewhat bias with the essay questions.

I enjoyed this teacher and feel terrible that she was forced to explain social and gender dynamics to an ignorant and close minded group of students. It is not easy having abroad-range view in an enviorment that prefers their women pregnant, their children athletes and their politics red.
She is the worst teacher on Delta's campus by far. If you go against her in class discussions, your grade drops. If your a male, your grade drops, as witnessed by her rants about her ex husband. I never opened the book at all, but know totally what her political views are. I dont pay for that
This woman is a nut! The class is an hour long crap session on how bad EVERYTHING is. No solutions just complaints. She actually said the government will poison whistle blowers, you know, like in "Silkwood", she loves to ref movies and anecdotal stories. DO NOT TAKE HER!
She is such a bad teacher! She just rants and rants, about how messed up the world is, then she tells us how its messed up becasue of white men. She did not teach a single fact, which is amazing over an 18 week course. She should not be allowed to teach. For your sake as a student, do not take her.

I disagree with the comment about Gottfried lowering your grade if you don't agree with her views. I disagreed & argued with her on many occassions & still received an A. She is extremely opinionated but this makes for a dynamic discussion especially if you challenge her. I would retake her class because she does have interesting content.

THE TEACHER HAS A LOT OF GOOD VIEWS CONCERNING SOCIETAL ISSUES, ALTHOUGH THE WAY SHE TEACHES IT IS NOT VERY EFFECTIVE. NOT MUCH CLASS INTERACTION AND SHE TENDS TO TALK TOO FAST. BUT THE TOPICS ARE INTERESTING; SHE'S JUST A LITTLE BORING AND GIVES TOO MUCH HOMEWORK!
teacher really didnt talk about social problems only studied 3 issues, tests are on things she really didnt teach overall didnt like her way of teaching seem like i didnt learn much about the subject. i believe the class should be interesting by teaching other issues not just 3 made class boring.

She is a very, very weird and terrible teacher. She does not grade fairly. She doesn't like you to disagree with her. She should not be teaching. She makes a fun course miserable! Don't take her class unless you want to work really hard and still fail.
The problem that I found with this teacher is this: You're only right if you agree with her. Any comments that don't conform with her ideals, she views as wrong with out a second thought are hearing your arguments.

she lectures everyday all day and a movie about once every two weeks. if love lectures and reading the book then this class is for you. the class is very boring so plan on sleeping a lot. AVOID THIS CLASS, IF YOU LIKE A'S AND B'S.

Not a horrible teacher, but not a good one. Tests are pretty hard; they are multiple choice and essay. There are alot of reaction papers to write and 1 term paper. Don't think I would recommend this class to anyone.

She is really not that bad. As long as you turn in all the work and do some extra credit, then you don't even have to take the final if you're overall grade is good.
Very informative class with good subject matter. She gives study guides before tests so if you know the terms its easy. I got an A so it cant be too hard. The term paper is easy, all you do is write an autobiography! Good class if you like this subject. Dont let your cell phone ring or she will kick you out of her class!!!!
I don't agree with everyones rants about this professor. My experience was that if you study thestudy guide before class and pay attention in class and do the homework, there is no way to fail. Writing a response to an inclass movie is not hard...and the term paper is an autoio...and E.C. is offered. I got c's on all tests and still received a b.

This teacher is rude and narrow-minded. Does not agree with anyone but herself. Never gives good grades unless you write her own opinion on the subject. Do not take this teacher.
She's a reasonable teacher though not interesting. The problem with her class is the atmosphere -- dumb people; this college is crawling with folks who should return to the 7th grade and attempt to pass that challenge.
She was always rude and insulting everyone who had an opinion against her. She did not like any of the males in the class and failed all of them. And anyone who liked them! She was horrible drop her class now before it is too late!!!

I took sociology 1B first and that class was easy so i thought that this class would be easy, its so not! Shes not very clear on what's on the test until you've already taken them! Shes not clear on her lecutres! Read all the books she has assigned to actually pass the class! oh and she's a b***h if your like 5 mins late for class & will kick u out
Very strict teacher;don't come to class late, turn your cell phone off, and be ready to participate in class!!! You do all three of these on top of studying hard, you'll do fine. I would be willing to bet that if you got the gender info of the reviewers, you would find that females had good experience, while males had bad experiences. She was a great teacher. Students who want to learn, think and be challenged should take this course. In my other Sociology courses, I have found that I'm more knowledgeable than most students because of her class. She is liberal, and why should she hide her views? Be open-minded, and you will do well in the class. She only criticizes ignorance.
Terrible. Best to take the class next semester and sign up early for a different teacher. Before the final we all talked about how bad of a teacher she was. Not one person disagreed. Rude, not helpful. I was told sociology should be a fun class...not this one. Boring class. Our text book was about Seinfeld and was had to study from. Stay Away!

I found this class to be very confusing, espically during lecture time. Although the lecures have guidelines(their pre-typed), they dont help at all if you have no idea what shes talking about because she skips from page to page. Hovever, I did learn alot.
She was very dry, lectures across the board and very un-interesting. By the end of the semester almost the whole class was dropped.

I loved the books that we read for class, only her opinion is correct, she does have her favorites, she makes up the exams which include 4 essay questions. The class isn't hard, Dr. Gottfried is just old-school you have to earn your grade and she's not paid to spoon feed the answers to her students. Plenty of reading, reading, and more reading.
Please do not take this teacher.... she gave me an F and i'm a 3.3 g.p.a student... she is unclear and the test are on todally different subjects then what was covered in the lectures... take Mr. Medina for sociology 1a I earned an A in his class!

I had to take the class for my major. It was do-able. Apply yourself and you will do fine. There are a lot of high-schoolish, unintelligent, immature people in the class who complain about the teacher. Most of them will be lucky to ever be successful at anything except making an indentation in a couch or wearing out a cell phone keypad.
CAUTION! If you just graduated from high school, it will be an extremely waste of time to be sitting in her class because by the end of the semester, it was down to five people. Find an understanding professor on campus that applies to all learning levels because everyone is different. Also, lecture material is of no help when it comes to tests.
There are 4 tests and 1 final.She drops the lowest test score.Plenty of homework, reading, and 1 term paper.She can seem pretty mean and straight forward.But, this is college so just accept it or take a different class.Make sure to read your books and show up to class on time or she won't let you in.I got an A.It's really up to the student.
This class was extremely easy to get a good grade. She gave plenty of extra credit options and assignments were super easy. Also, she drops one of your tests. HOWEVER, she is pretty intense. Make sure you turn your phone off and don't fall asleep. She doesn't hesitate to kick you out if you are the slightest disrespectful.
If you pay attention to the lectures and keep up on the reading it shouldn't be too hard. I got lazy mid-semester and had to work extra hard to pass. Her lectures are a bit unclear, so take a lot of notes. Every assignment is important. A few chances for extra credit.
This felt like an English class with the amount of reading she requires. We read 4 long books during the semester and had 1 term paper. After each movie you have to do a response paper. Very strict teacher, she doesn't hesitate to kick you out of class. Tests are based on readings and an open class discussions.

Read what she tells you to read and take notes and you'll get an A. The final was very easy compared to the tests. I did not find the lectures boring, time went by very fast. She is strict which is a plus. No one can come in late and no other distractions allowed. The movies were boring compared to the lectures.

I studied 30 min a week for this class, watched the videos, read that matson book right before the test, drew on my notebook while she spoke. Half ass all my work. You basically have to be retarded to fail her class.

She is horrible. She would always say we would come back to something in her pre-made outlines and never get to it. Then it would end up on the test! What is the point of making outlines to hand out if you don't bother following the order? I don't know how the heck I got a B. It was definitely not a fun experiance.

I agree w/ all, she's a pretty bad teacher, all over the place. Good points: no textbook, just 4 easy and interesting novels and lots of movies thru out semester. I got all As on the test. Here's how if u end up having to take her: form a study group, go over main pts of each chapter, never study JUST the study guide, go 2 class everyday!

This class was my favorite last semester. I think a reason so many students don't favor her is because people assume that if there is a discussion, it is not important for tests, but they are, so take notes. We learned a lot about interesting issues in class which peaked my interest in the world of humanitarian work. I would recommend. I got a B.

She's a decent teacher. She has class discussion mixed with her lecture, and she'll tie whatever comes up into the topic at hand. Don't be late and attendance is mandatory. Lecture is way more important than the book, but you need to read the articles. Pay attention, take notes, do all the assignments, and you'll be fine.
She is not nice at all. Never takes attendance but also randomly shows videos which you are needed to write a 1 page essay about so if you miss it then youre out of luck. There are not many assignments in this class so the ones you do have are really important. do not take this class. she is rude and does not care about students

For those students who wants to just slack off and get an A, then skip this teacher. The course itself was not hard at all. Pretty straight forward and I think easy. Teacher does lack motivation and encouragement but if your serious then you can get a A+ just like me and I'm no genius. Just read the books and do the work and you'll do fine.

Keep away from any of her classes; her interest is low and she is never helpful.She appeared to be in a bitter mood every day during class. If you have any interest in Sociology choose another teacher that actually cares about teaching the topic and the actual students in the class. It was such a mistake to take her class!
Stay away if at all possible! Her lectures are not informative so you dont know what to expect on exams!Her explanations of what she wants are vague at best so its alot of guess work .If this class is a must: u must take it with someone else!But if u lke being confused and frustrared by all means she is the instructor for u !

Worst teacher I've ever had. No exaggeration. She is condescending, rude and lacks the ability to teach anything. Her tests are essay format and you MUST agree with her point of view or else. The amount of effort I put into her class to BARELY pass would get me an A+ in any other teacher's class. Avoid her at all costs otherwise you'll regret it.

If you don't come out with an A+ in this class, it's your fault. She gives outlines for the exams, and yes, she expects the student to write paragraph length answers with proper sentence structure. Isn't that what college is for? She uses videos, which is helpful. She comes off a bit tough at first, but the learning experience is excellent.

has her phd doesn't follow her own syllabus. Likes to try new random ways to test you even the format of the test changes the day before. Gives checks and checks plus as your grade. u wll never know ur grade until the end of the semester
I took this class in the summer and did not expect it to be that difficult. I was surprised when I passed. I had a test a week, she assigns a newspaper article homework assignment a week. MUST READ TEXTBOOK. MUST TAKE NOTES. Tests are seven to eight essay questions.
I took Gottfrie over the summer and I found that her class was ALWAYS interesting. She is a real down to earth person when you catch her on a rant. She is strict and rough, but...it's college. I would suggest this professor if you think you can handle it.

Easiest class I've taken. The person that claimed to be a 4.0 student is lying to themselves about that because all this teacher wants is for you to know your stuff and to respond to test answers and prove that you paid attention in class. If you do your work, show up, and ask questions you'll get a "B" or an "A".

Forewarning: keep questions to yourself because she's quite condescending. She frequently assigns NY Times articles along with reading assignments. She gives out video responses & newspaper assignments which aren't too hard if you follow directions. Her tests consist of 7 questions written in paragraph form. She tends to rant but overall, OK prof.
This professor isn't as bad as everyone makes her out to be. I managed to get a B. Just keep up with her readings, and you will do just fine. It's an interesting class, and if you get involved in class discussions, she will love you.

I believe if you do the readings in the book, read the articles she assigns, do the video reviews, attend lectures and write the term paper that you should do fine. Strict phone policy. Strict late policy. Come to class and work hard and you should be fine.
Not the best teacher but if you have no choice .. Best advice read all the assigned readings and take notes. Study your notes daily and you will be fine. If you're a dedicated student and serious about you're studies you will pass.

Had to study my ass off to pass the final, only time I ever even opened the book! Waited till last day of semester to grade any work. not helpful, couldn't even check grades during semester.
If you put in the work you will get a good grade. Pretty clear and to the point in her class. Read everything! the entire chapters and articles when she assigns them, all you need to know is in the syllabus. She expects you to put in the work, your in college! lectures can be long and sometimes boring.
When asking to clarify her assignments or how she wanted them. She would give me looks like I was retarded or didn't want to help me. She is very smart but lacks making assignments or readings clear to us. I wasn't the only one who felt she was lost many of us in the class as well. I will never take her again.
Gottfried may be a tough grader but she is really passionate about her work. She may not be clear at times but if you listen, you'll understand. She provides molecules on E-tudes print them so you wont be confused in class. Tests are on E-Tudes, you will have about two discussions a week. Listen and take notes during lectures and youll be fine!
This is not an easy A class so if that is what you are looking for then you better look elsewhere. She grades pretty tough, especially on discussions. Didn't give good feed back either. I got a A in this class, but its only because i aced the final which is as easy as it can get. Just study past hw/test and you'll be solid!
She's rude, does not help you at all, seriously regret taking her, she shouldn't even be teaching socio she goes off topic to much, definitely won't ever take her again.
She is a great person and I have learned a lot in her class. The way she grades things in really unacceptable. If you do not say or write what SHE said in class then you will not get credit for it. How she grades you also depends on whether she likes you. I had similar answers to one of my classmates yet she got the higher grade. I do NOT recommend
Terrible experience, the class was structured in a very confusing way and was incredibly difficult to receive a satisfactory grade in.
She gives you the textbook pdf which is nice. However, she doesn't have anywhere to input grades so you have to keep track yourself. Never gives homework so nothing to cushion your grade. Only two papers (got A's on both) however there were quizzes almost every other class on readings & never got higher than a C when I would read. Avoid if possible
If you read the chapters, you will be fine. BUT if you dont state your answers in HER words, good luck. You will not pass. She's rude to students and dont you dare disagree with her because there goes your grade. She's literally the worst "teacher", if you can even call her that. EXTREMELY RUDE. She gave me my first D in college & I read EVERY chpt
While the content of Socio1A was very intriguing, this professor was the worst one to teach it. Youre better off with probably any other professor, but if thats not an option, I advise taking Socio1A next semester.
DO NOT TAKE HER. i love sociology and its an interesting subject. Im sure shes a great person but teaching wise, i could not keep up with her. shes kinda all over the place and gets off topic a lot. i dropped her class. Take Mr Green!
