He is O.K. not the best professor I have ever had but not the worst. Just make sure you take good notes because thats all he expects you to use for the test.
He is not so interesting... His class was a bit hard and he could mean at times. Gotta make sure u do the work or else u'll be lost.
worst professor ever!!!! is a complete jerk, not understanding, not willing to compromise, told our class the TEXTBOOK was WRONG, is a complete wacko, loves pine trees! If you wanna keep your sanity stay away from this guy! Made me wanna change my major!
i totally hate this man. horrible professor, he doesn't make the class interesting at all and he sounds like kermit the frog when he talks. when you talk about someone being nerdy, thats him!!
This man is just not nice or helpful at all. I think that he is a terricle teacher and I don't recommend him to anyone
He is extremely hard but the subject matter in itself is difficult. The only thing i can say is FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS, read all of his papers with step by step directions and follow them. Take clear notes, bring a taperecorder, just follow the directions
I really did not like him! He made biology boring and conducted the class in a way that made you feel like an idiot. He makes testes harder than they already are. Don't recommend him!
this man has the worst attitude i've ever experienced from a professor. his snide remarks and my-crap-doesn't-stink attitude has got to go. his class notes aren't in order, his labs are insanely detailed and don't correspond to anything we do in class.
WORST professor @ bergen. Unorganized, cocky, rude, arrogant, and difficult. He needs an attitude adjustment ASAP!!
unorginised lecture has chip on shoulder i recived a B when i had him he is a want to be biologist and can not cut it in the feild DO NOT TAKE HIM BAD VERY BAD YOU WILL NOT LEARN ABOUGHT BIO YOU WILL JUST TRY TO GET BY IN HIS CLASS POOR INSTRUCTER NOT F
WORST TEACHER SO HARD.. NEVER LET U LEAVE EASY DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!
I've had some terrible professors before, but Highley is byfar the WORST. His anal-retentive habits and style of teaching are completely unacceptable. Labs don't correspond to lectures and he is an unfair grader. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!!
HORRIBLE teacher! No fun.. no personallity. the whole class felt like they were gunna fail. Hated people if ur not a bio major. DROP THE CLASS if u have him!!!!
Jerk................

Can not understand what he means when he asks a question. Very Hard---The lab book he wrote stinks.
This guy is not out to be your friend, he is there to teach students Biology and, unless you have a genuine interest in the subject matter, he has no tolerance for fools. If you were properly prepared, for Bio, in high school you should do fine.
I don't understand why everybody complains so much about this prof. Given that he is not the friendliest person ever, he's not a monster either. His lectures are very straight forward. As long as you take notes and do every lab you should be fine.
All of this negative feedback on Highley is very misplaced. This is no doubt a college level course. Only take this class if you are serious. But be aware, especially when it comes to cleaning labware, he's as precise as a robot and expects alot.
i donno what everyones talkin about...hes really good, he's nice and is very helpful always ready to help anyone out, wont go into futher work until u understand what hes explaining, and isnt anal about the labs at all ..guess hes more leanent than he was.
I think he is a wonderful teacher. You really have to pay attention and ask questions if you are unsure, but compared to all the other science teachers I have had, he was the best. My grades were a lot higher with him.
Nice guy, but no personality. Needs to lighten up a little. Very helpfull though. very smart.

Professor Highley is a nice teacher. However, one should struggle a lot to get a B if not an A. Don't expect an A just dream about it because u matter how much u study you still won't be able to get the grade that you expect. His lecture exam are easy, but the lab exams are really hard. Now it is up
This professor is extremely difficult. He is confusing;does not teach well and half of the time he does not even know what he is talking about. Trust me you will fail the course.
I think Professor Highley was great. I hate biology and he made it ok.....His test are hard but its ALL from your notes. He was extremely helpful to me and very knowledgable on the subject. I tried to get him for Bio 2 but I couldn't and I got stuck with some other guy. I got an A in the class.
Very Nice, but very hard and confusing. take very good notes, bring a tape recorder and listen to it - youll need it. Ask questions - even when you don't think you need to.
Great teacher, goes straight to the point, notes are from his transparensis and test are from the notes, never used the book, only his manual, Very well organized...I wish all my sciences were like that, I recommended.
Avoid at all costs!!! His lectures do not prepare you for the tests. It was astounding how many "A" students struggled to pass his class. Unreal.
Great Prof. His lecture's very clear and organized however He is very strict on certain rules for project and lab materials. You need to work hard to get good grades.People who said something negative about him probably didn't study and expected to get A.Stupid people! overall very intersesting class
Take good notes and you will get good grades. Test are straight from the notes and always a good curve. Strick on lab and project but a good teacher.
Tests are hard, but he curves a lot. Personality wise,VERY particular about how things are done, so do not comment or question a whole lot with him, or he will freak out on you. Trust me, even the nicest students have been "corrected". Not a teacher to have discussions with--he speaks over you and believes he knows all. :-(
I managed to get a good grade in his class, though he is a very hard teacher. He gives his notes from a projector. On average you will have 30-35 pages of notes to study per exam.He gives 4 lect. and 2 lab tests,a lab note book(extremly picky with this)and a written sciene project. Will not budge on anything, and wants every little thing done his way.
This guy thinks he knows the best way to do everything, do not question anything he says, or he will get VERY angry. Avoid this teacher.
He is good at lecture, bad at labs. His test are right from the notes & he gives you the essay. But for labs he expects you to know too much & isn't always there for help when you need it. He does not tolerate people who are obviously lazy; so if you actually try with the labs, tests & paper, you should be ok. I got an A.
He is not the easiest teacher, but you learn alot from him. His exams are based on his lecture, so don't both buying the textbook. He'll tell you on the 1st day what to buy and what not to spend your $ on. His exams have multiple choice & an essay that he gives you beforehand. The only thing I didn't really like was his lab, he wasn't very helpful.
Professor Highley is a true college professor. Detailed lectures, pay attention to what is on the board and what he is saying as he describes each topic. Exams are tough, take good notes youll do well. Labs are detailed oriented to help visualize lecture material. Grades arent everything, class participation and effort are just as important to Him
He's quick; In order to pass, you have to take good notes and pay attention. He cares, but doesn't play around. You don't need the book, only the lab notebooks. If you like getting out of class early, this isn't that type of teacher; He utilizes every minute of his class time. Overall he's not bad.
Hard teacher. His tests are hard,he thinks he knows everything. He curves big time, which helped me pass. Don't take him if science ain't your thing.

I thought the worst at first, but i gave him a chance. I am the type of student that is just looking to "get bye". He grades easy with a curve. I couldn't believe i actually got a decsent grade when i expected the worst. he is willing to help.

He is a soft spoken witty man, but he expects you to try your best. Overall, he is a good proffessor.
He is a very nice & good professor. The class itself is hard. There are 4 lecture tests, 2 lab tests, and a research paper. You don't have to buy the Biology book, just the lab notebooks. For such a hard class, he taught it well. He curves so it helps a lot.

let me tell u somethin, if ur want a professor that clear and gives u good notes and answers ur questions. THIS IS NOT THE GUY. Me sucks big time, stay away from him
very hard, know how to teach, but he has some serious problems with him self
he's very hard!! don't take him!! the worst bio teacher!!in history!!
HORRIBLE! don't take him...trust me.
Hes A Horrible teacher! Ok so u want a summary..he sucks...gives you a whole notebook of notes for each indiv test. tests are extremely hard. dont take him
He is a good professor. But don't buy the book. His exams are strictly from the notes which aren't alot. He's not hard if your in class and take all the notes.
highley's exams are STRAIGHT FROM THE NOTES people. you do NOT need the textbook so save yourself some dough. study from his notes and you shouldnt get lower than an A, especially with his curves. if you're not getting at least a B in his class, you're obviously not doing something right.
a great knowledgable professor; if you want to learn a lot take him; he's great and very interesting and he knows what he's talking about;
great professor; take him and u will learn a lot; make sure u take good notes.
just don't take him in bio lab...
THEN HE WILL MAKE U BUY $10 BOOK WHICH U WILL JUS USE IT ONE DAY...N ONLY USE ONE PAGE OF THAT BOOK...IT'S WASTE OF MONEY..INSTEAD HE CAN GIVE U A PHOTO COPY OF THAT SINGLE PAGE N THEN THE STUDENTS CAN RETURN HIM AT THE END OF CLASS..HE IS AWEFUL..WASTES ALL STUENTS HARD EARNED MONEY....N WONT EVEN GIVE THE GRADE THE HARD WORKIN STUDENTS DESERVE
He's mean. Not very kind. He's strict person. You should take notes lots of things every class.
Tests based on notes: study notes & you will do well. Lab tests are difficult, even the best students did poorly on them. As for the teacher, he knows his bio BUT his social skills are subpar, he's demeaning, and can be disrespectful. His attitude takes a 180 when speaking with other teachers. His jokes are corny. Don't use wikipedia as a source.
HIS CLASS IS NOT HARD UNLESS YOU'RE TAKING A HEAVY SEMESTER COURSELOAD.MAKE TIME TO STUDY AHEAD--THE AMOUNT OF MATERIAL & NEW VOCAB CAN OVERWHEALM.HIS TESTS ARE OFF THE NOTES.YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO LISTEN WELL & WRITE FAST.A VERY SWEET PROFESSOR.THE STUFF ISN'T HARD; BUY BIO II NOTES IN BOOK STORES BY PROF. CRESCITELLI SINCE THERE'S NO REAL BOOK.
This guy is the MOST ANAL PERSON in BCC. When he graded my lab book, instead of giving me a 100, he gave me a 98. He took 2 points off because I forgot to include my TABLE # in lab class. His tests are no where near his lectures, similar but you have to be Charles Darwin to understand his questions and ace the exams. He brought down my average, tru
He is a taugh professor but he is reasonable. he explains everything clearly and tries to help students as much as possible and works out missed tests and deadlines with students. I definitly recommend him. If you wanna learn, take hime.
Prof.Highley is one of the nicest professors in BCC. If you want to learn a lot, work hard and have challenging labs - take him, you won't regret. Besides getting a lot of knowledge in his class, it was also very interesting and not boring at all. lecture exams are not hard, but you should really put a lot of effort into labs.

Does not care about attendance, curves test to the point where it is impossible to fail, No homework, only one research paper, I mean, he's not the best or easiest professors but he's not as hard as this page makes him seem.
Overall his teaching skills are not the best, but you must ask alot of questions in order to understand his information. He is really good to answer questions but his test can be extremely hard. Although i got an A in the class, I worked my butt off!
I recently took Bio 101 with Prof. Highley and enjoyed his class very much. I had a 8:00am bio lab and lecture until 12:20 every monday, so my class dragged on but overall, he really wasn't that hard of a teacher..This is college was more work is expected from us!
He is a really nice professor. The class is difficult itself but he is always willing to stop and help you if you don't understand. Great professor! But you don't need the book. Based off his lecture notes.
The thing with Highly is that he makes a relatively comprehendable subject sounds confusing and frustrating. He doesn't use the current classification system but an old one, he doesn't use modern technology but 1,000 yrs old slides, and the exams-whoa!he asks about stuff that he didn't even go over in class...Try to avoid if u have better option...
This professor is a really nice guy....dont even bother buying the book, i didn't open it once, strictly overhead notes....if u miss one class, u will fall behind.....show up to every class, take notes, and you should be ok
worse teacher
one of the best ever. he is hard, but he is fair, and is really a great guy. glad i took him!
he knows his stuff but he is not very good at convening it to his students. he is very fair with his tests and give extra credit. i think it is because he knows his class is hard.
He's not bad. HIs class can be hard, and you really do need to know everything he gives you...but he grades ona curve. Definitely don't know how I've gotten all A's on my exam, but I'm glad I did. Just don't eat during lab, he gets really weird about it.
Great teacher. Dont buy the book youll never use it. make sure you take notes.
ok do not listen to anything that anyone else has said about this man. i bought the BS last semester when i registered for this mans class and wow did i regret it!! his tests are soo hard. he doesnt give the essay question the day of the test you are expected to remember it andd everything must be handed in on time otherwise he takes of 49 points!!

I am taking professor Highley right now and I think he is a very good professor. He is a little unclear in his teaching but overall he is interesting and covers mostly everything you need to know in Bio II. my bio 1 professor did not do that. His labs are interesting and he makes you keep a comprehensive lab book for the end of the semester.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. DOES NOT TEACH THE MATERIAL, terrible notes, and has his favorites in the class. The tests are ridiculous and need to be curved 25+ points for people to pass. His grading techniques are awful and I regret staying in this class. I am a straight
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. you will be extremely sorry. The tests need to be curved 25 points, he gives no notes, and better yet, hardly even teaches the material. I have never gotten anything less than an A in any other science class I have ever taken and I will be lucky to pull off a B. Absolutely HORRIBLE.
Highley's a little unclear in his lectures-Exams are always curved 25pts due to vast low grades among students..Lectures in-depth almost to the point of confusion-Hes pretty comedic some days, sarcastic others-His class is what you make of it-7 words: KEEP ON TOP OF YOUR LAB NOTEBOOK. Got a B, SO GLAD ITS OVER WITH. Sucks to be you if your takin him
He is a dedicated teacher and tries to get down to the students' level to make them understand. Uses good analogies to get his point across. Tests are curved & essay question is given a week prior to the test. So if you know your notes well, you can get an A. Available during office times and easily approachable to clarify doubts. Text not needed.
This guy is horrible! He makes the easiest material more difficult than it is and NEVER stays on point during lectures. He is completely unorganized. He is also the instructor for lab, and he is even worse at that! He is NEVER prepared for lab, so we spent 20-30 min just setting up, which means you have to stay even longer!! Def not the brightest..
Do not take this class if you are looking for a free ride. Professor Highley expects that you show up to class, take notes, & study them. If you meet that expectation, you will have no problem passing the class. Earning an ?A? in this class is certainly feasible. What I liked about Prof Highley is how he used common everyday subjects to teach the m
he is only one out of 2 teachers that teach bio 203. hes really hard he uses the old fashioned projector. you deff have to work hard in that class lab is so disorganized and not helpful constantly asking him questions. basically its him or Crescitelli. they're both bad just have to take ur pick :(
His tests are not difficult, if you read the text they are rather easy. His lectures are completely useless, except for the lecture packets. It is best to read the text covering the packets than to attend lecture, you will learn much more. He is a terrible lab instructor and tries to make you think that the act of boiling water is dangerous.
Took him over the summer. Very much an old school, no nonsense, nuts and bolts scientist. He has a bit of an ego, even if he's wrong. Doesn't try to make his class too hard. Gives a lot of trow away questions and extra credit. Decent students from good schools who read the packet and pay attention should get an A. Some weaker students struggled....
-does not test my knowledge of the subject -insufficient labs 1.not enough supplies 2.not enough time 3.not enough aid 4.little to no explanation, just look at the book. -rushing through 1.not leaving adequate time for labs 2.not enough time for review 3.crams everything together -Threats of point deduction 1.points taken away fo
Hard but fair. All i got to say. You get an essay question a week before the test which helps you figure out what youre going to write. take all the extra credit!
He was very explaining and eager to help his students. All of the test questions comes from lectures as long as you take notes you'll be fine. Tests are detailed but doesnt matter bec he has a curve
Highly anal and by the book! Not an easy Professor to get along with. Excessive rules cell phones, lateness etc... Dont take him unless you have a real interet in Bio or Chem. He can be very condescending at times. Tests on a curve!
IF you take him prepare for the hardest class you've ever taken. the tests are impossible! the notes will help you so little. He barely helps in lab and the ancient projectors prefer not to say anything about that. If have another choice DON'T TAKE HIM
He has issues. Don't take him! Worst prof in Bergen. Very rude and disgusting!
I had highley for bio 101 summer class and he is amazing! He is very strict with cell phones and lab safety but he gave many extra credit opportunities and curved all of our tests.... So nice and cares about his students.. As long as you try and work hard you will get a good grade!
Loved the class, hated the exams. The exams were way too detailed and a complete waste of time. Grades on a curve! Horrible in the lab, never explained anything but expected you to spend the entire length of the lab just "observing".
one of the worst teachers i have ever had. does not explain the material well AT ALL and is absolutely useless in lab. he leaves the room constantly and barely helps at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
His class is difficult if you don't study or put in the work. He hands out a note packet and throughout the semester goes over each and every point and thats what the tests are on - there are no surprise questions if you study properly. If you're looking to learn, this class is for you. If you want an easy A, look elsewhere.
Had him 2 semesters in a row. Bio 1 and 2, He can seem a little rude but he's not a bad guy. If you ask him for help he will be more then happy to help. There are a lot of exams all based on his lectures and packets that he hands out STUDY!!! If you study and work your butt off it will pay off.
If you want easy A,he is not a right person for you..although he curves grades and throw many EC ..but still you wouldn't get good grade..his tests are very tough..almost 100 multiple choice+essay+and short answer questions..and o yea..please write everything in your lab note book..he checks every single damn steps&take off pts if u missed somthing
so boring and do nothing in lab !! i mean nothing he just have extremely hard test and he is so unorganized !!
he may seem like a cool guy but not so much as a professor. during lectures, he doesn't explain the material clearly rather he will use analogies or some type of theory to explain it. labs he has us just sit there and observe things. he literally acts as if were at Harvard. his exams are tough and if your looking for an easy A, don't take him!
He is literally the worst! He doesn't like compromise and loves to argue with students because he always has to be right. Directions are confusing, and he gives a couple lab quizzes. Very uptight kind of guy. I advise you NOT to take him.
Horrible professor.. all i can say is DO NOT TAKE. the students do so bad on his exams that he ends up curving it by 30+ points. & most still fail. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
The only good thing I remember about this class is that I didn't have to buy a textbook. There is so much to learn that if you don't study your butt off you are definitely going to fail. The tests made for you to fail. Even so, I got an A because I studied HARD. Take him only if you already have knowledge in Bio and if you are a bio major.
Honestly Highley is a very good professor. His tests are made up of everything that he teachs in lecture and during lab. Seriously if u=your looking for an easy A, dont take him. But dont let other comments scare you. He hard but if u really study hard then youll be fine.
the beginning of semester I didnot understand him, English is my second language.when I got used to his method of teaching,I learned a lot. there are 3 test from combined chapters and 3 lab test plus a research paper. be careful he is true scientist and picky one. if you want to learn something and science is your major take his class.
I go to Rutgers (NB) I can honestly say its the easisest science class I've taken and yes I'm a STEM major. He gives a lot of extra credit,no booke required and I studied 2hrs before an exam and got A's. He's not that helpful in lab but they're easy. He also tends to ramble in lecture. Take him especially if you're a non-bergen student.
Really good professor knows his stuff, Teaches out of lab manual so don't bother buying book, easy but if u dnt go to class you will fail bc he gives u a huge packet for each test and specific examples and things you need to know for test, bad personality kinda of rude, always needs to be right, terrible in lab, very unhelpful in lab, great in lect
Very knowledgeable. Has a clear passion for biology. Gives a packet of notes for each unit and lectures based off of them. Study the packets, pay attention to his lectures, and you'll be fine. Labs are thorough (he wrote the lab book). If you're interested in pursuing biology, Highley's your man.
I don't care what people say, Professor Highley is a great professor. Yes, he can be opinionated, but that does not take away from the quality of his lectures. He is really clear when he explains concepts and will spend as much time as necessary on topics that students don't fully understand. He is also very fair when it comes to exam material.
Others may think that Prof. Highley was not a great professor.. however, my question to those others is, what did you expect from the chair of the biology department? Highley was specific and detail oriented, which are characteristics that any biology professor should have. Yeah, he was a little uptight sometimes, but he was still a great teacher
He's material is very clear. I took him for BIO-101 and BIO-201, if he was teaching other BIO courses i would take them. He is a tough grader, but he assigns a lot of extra credit.
Great professor if you love bio. He really knows what hes talking about and talks about some really interesting stuff. Some of his lectures are tough to follow if youre a bio newbie but hes always down to talk after class and explain further.
He definitely is not an easy A but he is an example a real teacher. He knows what he wants and is not very lenient. Lecture was made up of 4 exams (75+ multiple choice and essay that is given before hand) and a paper. Lab was made up of 2 open-book lab tests/practicums and a grade for the lab notebook. Not an easy course but one of my favorite.
I wish he was a good professor but he isn't. he is bland and all his analogies are random or about football. he gives a huge packet and simply reads it over in lecture. labs are bland. way too many tests with too much material. I've always been good at science and this class really killed my confidence. would not recommend taking him.
Professor Highley is a tough grader and expects you to know all the materals for his exams. I would recommend that you study his packets for hours and hours. Gives 4 exams and an research paper to go along with everything else. Barely passed his class. Would not take again.
It was heavy and hard class to follow. The professor does have knowledge of the subject and will answer all your questions. He is demanding professor and tough grader, and the exams are based on a bunch of info , there were 4 lecture exams and 2 lab, plus a short essay in each one. Just read and study the pile of material once and once again
trust me when I say this: avoid the class. tests are confusing and barely follow the lectures, labs are insanely disorganized and will call you out for using a laptop to take notes, which is weird. his online moodle page was devoid of any information: no syllabus, nothing. very condescending so just simply save yourself the trouble.
Attending lectures is absolutely necessary. Don't take this class if you won't be able to attend. His verbal lectures are rich in content & mandatory for exams. Labs felt disorganized. Your grade is determined on exams only & he doesn't post grades online during the semester, but he does allow students to review exams the day after they're graded.
Best science professor I've had. You won't have to worry about homework. Just make sure you take notes and attend lectures. Many don't like him but I learned a lot from him and made me like biology even more.
He's a great professor overall. He clearly knows what he's talking about and wants you to feel connected to the content. However, he will expect you to know ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING on the tests, so study HARD. He also prepares the biology majors for upcoming courses, which is honestly my favorite part about him.
Professor Highley runs a challenging but rewarding BIO101 class. Attend lectures and utilize study aids like Unstuck AI to master the dense course material. Exams are tough, but worth the effort.
Professor Highley is honestly and nice guy and he is in charge of the science department. But at the end of the day he is really not a great professor. The way he lectures and give out with information was very confusing and it was very hard for my to fully understand anything. I got unlucky that I had to take him because he was the only one left.
Professor Highley made class bearable. I only took his lab class though. He's good at giving feedback and explains lab procedures well. There isn't technically homework for the course, but he expects the lab questions to be done during the week before next class. Overall, helpful professor and the labs were fun in my opinion.
