Dr. Evans is hilarious and was so helpful. I was finally able to understand biology in a way I never had before. His stories are also delightful. He's very unpredictable, and no lecture is ever the same. He enjoys surprises and surprising. He holds you accountable for your knowledge.
This class is hard by nature, but Paul makes it much more manageable than other professors. There is relatively little feedback on quizzes so you have no idea if you are getting the material or not. The final is your grade, but you get to justify what you think you should get before you take it. Just justify for an A and you just might get it :)
This class is tough, cause your grade comes from just the final, so the semester's easier, but your grade unknown til the end. But, he lets you write an appeal as to what YOU think you deserved in the class. I scored an A because even though I bombed the final, I did well on quizes throughout the semester. He's a very fair guy.
He's okay. He's funny, and works in egypt, I touched mummy cloth this morning. The tests are not predictable but he does allow you to submit regrades if you can support your answer
The best class ever in the Life Sciences!
This class is very time consuming if you want a good grade. It should qualify as a 6 credit class. He doesnt do tests reviews and to prepare you for a test he tells you to remember all the terms & concepts and reread all the chapters again and you will be somewhat more ready.Tries to make it interesting by making stupid jokes. Dont take his class.
By far the most interesting professor at BYU.
Dr. Evans would always listen and then help me understand. No other professor has ever helped me like he did.
Dr. Evans is nice... MMBio 240 is a hard class. Do your reading and come prepare to class and you'll do well. Also if you have any question, go talk to him and he'll help you. Again, it is a hard class.
He is a shoot-from-the-hip kind of professor, but I think it kept the lectures exciting. I learned more from the lectures than from reading. There was more student/professor interaction during his lectures than in any other Class I've taken at BYU. I'd take MMBIO from him again. I hear there is a new textbook now too, it was desperately needed.
SO MUCH FUN! He kept me awake for 3 hours! Quite a feat.
Dr. Evans is hilarious and very entertaining. His lectures are very difficult to follow. You'll often find yourself completely and utterly lost. He just jumps all over the place and leaves you confused. He does prepare you extremely well for the tests and his grading is very fair.
Dr. evans obviously cares about what he teaches. Some of his lectures are wonderfull and some are impossible to follow. the material is hard, but sometimes I think he goes too deep into the nitty gritty. His tests are mostly fair, many questions are worded funny so you don't really the answer although he claims he has no intetions to trick you.
Awesome teacher. I was dreading biology, but this colloquium class was such a nice choice. We talked a lot about philosophy and theory as opposed to other bio classes where everything is so "structured." If you are into memorizing and having everything perfectly laid out for you, don't take this class. If you are really interested in learning-take
Evans is one of the best biology teachers I've had at BYU. He's difficult, but reasonable. Posts video&audio of each lecture, has useful study guides for each topic and take home quizzes that represent the exams well. Also has a great sense of humor... lots of fun :)
He's a great teacher, knows his stuff, good humor. But I do feel he wasn't very approachable outside of class, gives contradictory answers and he's pretty unorganized (quite a few editing errors on tests and quizzes). Plus the tests are a pain (Average of the first is a 73, highest score 90. No curve). Very analytical class. Not for everyone.
He makes jokes the whole class, but is very confusing. His tests are very ambiguous and not representative of what was covered in class. His study guides are eleven pages per chapter of "must know" items. The class has way too much going on...
Dr. Evans is very confusing and very sarcastic. I would not take this class from him if I could go back. If you like unrepresentative tests then go ahead and choose him.
He's a great professor with good humor. Class was a bit confusing at times and the tests were very hard. Nothing against him (I liked him), I would not take this class if I had the choice again.
Very poor professor. He is unorganized and is even worse to talk to "in person." I would recommend anyone else for MMBio
It's true, his tests are very difficult, but he is the funniest and best teacher at BYU! I took mmbio 240 and pdbio 360 from him! I would recommend him over anyone else!
The class overall was pretty good. I've seen teachers use the learning objectives and study guides with more success--he wants you to learn so much that I already don't remember much of what I had to learn. Tests are tough but you get to drop your worst score. He's entertaining and personable, overall a good teacher.
By far the most frustrating class I've taken at BYU. An extremely personable man, but his class lacks any sort of organization. He does not frame his lectures, so you have all of the specifics without having any sort of overall picture. Science is what I do, and I love it, and this has been the first class that I have hated going to every lecture.
This is the most frustrating class I have taken during my time here at BYU. While he is down-to-earth he makes no sense, is not helpful, expects way too much from students and is strict. If you want to memorize over 100 pages of information for each test then his is your class.
Professor Evans is a poor teacher. Don't take it from him! His lectures are confusing and have nothing to do with the tests. The worst teacher I have had at BYU. Most frustrating class I have taken. I didn't learn anything.
My hardest class this semester. One of those classes that you feel you can do nothing for to raise your grade. In class quizzes are difficult and so stressful. Take home quizzes each week, that you hope you will do okay on, but end up being pretty hard.
I was very excited to learn the material for this class and came out very disappointed due to the unorganized nature of this class: the lectures aren't clear, the materials provided aren't helpful and I don't feel like I actually learned anything even though I got an A-. For the final he let us make a full page of notes, yet the average was a 68%
Really personable guy, and while I didn't take mmbio 240 from him, my experience says he can't be as hard as some of these people make him out to be. His tests correlate so well to his study guides it is crazy. I do agree that his lectures are scattered without an overall picture, class is kind of useless at points. Not terrible, but not great.
He is a nice guy. He has a Q & A review session every Monday night online, which was very helpful at times. He was very willing to help. His classes do seem a little disorganized. His tests aren't bad if you read through the objectives and do ALL of the practice problems. In-class iClicker questions are worth part of your grade. Good professor.
AMAZING Professor. I saved this class until the last possible semester because I had heard such awful horror stories. Not the case. If you want an A you can easily have it. He gave us an exam to study off of and then repeated the questions on the actual exam. Boosted my MCAT Bio score 4 points! I learned so much and it was easy! TAKE THIS COURSE!
Lectures are scattered and hard to follow. Evans is a really funny professor though.
One of the worst teachers at BYU. If not for in class quizzes I would have never attended lecture. He doesn't teach towards his tests ever. The only way to get a decent grade is to MEMORIZE THE STUDY GUIDE QUESTIONS he posts online. He pretty much uses those questions to make up his tests. Really useless class though.
Awesome teacher very fair, you can attend class online, he allows for regrades. Although I didn't do super well in this class, I must admit that it was fair. For the final we got to take in a 8 by 11 piece of paper. This class overs a ton of material. LOOK AT PREVIOUS EXAMS, STUDY GUIDE QUESTIONS, AND TAKE HOME QUIZZES contain >70% of the answers.
WORST. TEACHER. EVER! so confusing in lectures and wasn't very clear when you came to him for help. He often made you feel dumb for asking questions. I do not recommend him, EVER!
Dr. Evans makes this class unnecessarily hard. His lecture prepare you minimally for the upcoming tests and his study guides have way to much extraneous information.
Haters are going to hate, but he knows his stuff.
Dr Evans is smart and knows his stuff but it is way too hard to follow. There is so much information and the class was not organized. Don't have to buy a book and he has study guides. The first test is almost identical to his others but after that the questions on the test are really wordy and hard to understand
Hardest class ever, not because of the material, but because he is so disorganized and hard to understand. He is smart, but a HORRIBLE teacher as far as helping students Learn. His grading policy is pretty nice, but what he tests you on are a complicated mess of things you have never seen before. I studied 9+ hours for tests and failed all of them.
Dr. Evans was an amazing teacher. People either loved him or hated him. He is very funny and keeps you entertained. His class lectures were recorded and you could remotely view the lectures and participate online, for example if you were out of town. Requires you to think critically!! This class seriously helped prepare me for the MCAT.
Great, funny guy, not a great teacher. Doesn't convey material in an understandable way. No textbook required, but should be. Lectures are unorganizedrandom. Tests:70% of questions come from study guides, be prepared to study 70+ pgs of pure questions per test. Must study 10-20 hours a week in order for an A or B, unless you know material already.
Dr. Evans is very confusing and the material is very disorganized. I was very dissatisfied with the course overall. I went to every class and tried hard to understand the material. Evans, however, expects most students to already have an above average knowledge of everything we haven't learned yet. I would for sure avoid taking this class from him.
It may seem like the class is hard, but honestly just study the study guides and you will get an A. He pulls almost all of his test questions from the study guides, which you have access to all semester.
Amazing professor. Lectures to prepare MCAT or DAT testing.
By far the worst teacher I have had at BYU. Never take molecular biology from him. His lectures are all over the place and very disorganized. It was hard to even understand what subject we were talking about. He was no help at all and I didn't learn a thing.
Dr. Evans is an interesting professor. He has plenty of good stories and is always in a good mood. BUT his class is very confusing. He is a bit scatterbrained and doesn't really teach lectures in a logical way. I don't feel like I learned very much cell biology. PS He deserves all those chili peppers and the #1 ranking. He's a smokin hot dude.
Since the first day, I wanted to be this guy's TA. He leaks intelligence into anyone with a basic background in biology and a desire to learn. Hammers good habits for critical thinking into you. Has good, original ideas for effective teaching. Not everyone agrees with that. Prepares for MCAT. Offers online option for lectures. No textbook needed.
He obviously knows the material he's teaching... But doesn't convey it very well to the students. It's hard to tell what you should write down and the homework is never directly related. The tests are basically copy and pasted study guides - and because of this I don't think many of us got much out of this course, no real learning. Don't take it.
Horribly disorganized class. The only reason I went to lecture was because of the in class iClicker quizzes given nearly every class. He is always trying to make jokes, many of which can come off as offensive. Does not respect students very much. I would advise to take this class from anyone else but Evans.
Dr. Evans has a funny sense of humor, as in he's mostly crude and very egocentric. He's very smart and I'm sure is a spectacular scientist, but his lectures prepare you minimally for the exam. Expect to spend an excessive amount of time outside of class learning the material and reviewing the study guides. I would recommend a different professor.
The class was really hard, and you need to work for your grade. He's a really funny guy, and can make some edgy, racy jokes at times. This guy is really smart, and can lose you easily. Just study the study guides, and you'll be fine. No text book required.
All I have to say is amen to everyone's comments. Great guy with a good outlook on life and science. He really wants to help you and will if you go to him, which is very difficult because then it causes even more work for you. I would absolutely NOT take this class again from him. It was the worst class I've ever taken and I suffered for it.
This class is a joke. The only way to do well on the tests is to straight up memorize the study guide practice problems. That means memorizing 2000+ complex problems. He is a funny guy, but his lectures have no correlation with performance on the tests.
Professor Evans is a great guy and has a lot of humor in his lessons. However, he does not necessarily teach exactly what he tests on. He has a study guide for 10+ chapters with up to 100 questions on each study guide. His tests are pretty much memorizing these 1000+ questions. If you like to memorize and not learn anything, this class is for you.
Dr. Evans is the absolute worst professor at BYU. He does not care for his students, nor for their education. On each take home quiz he asks us to check our own grades, and report to him if there are any mistakes. I did so, but he laughed and said that he drops some anyways so it didn't matter. I got a 0 instead of the 9 I had earned. WORST TEACHER
If you understand/memorize the study guides you can get an A. Has "Take Home Quizes" which get tough towards the end of semester. Is a little difficult to understand what he teaches in lecture. I used the textbook a fair deal. Naturally an MMBIO class at BYU is going to be difficult--class average was a little high at 78%.
Never disliked a class more. The lectures suck as in you study at home and then get to lecture and feel like you're in the wrong class because you have no idea what he's talking about. I felt like nothing prepared me for the final. The TA's took the class from another professor and even said Evans was way harder. AVOID!!
He was unclear and unhelpful. You had to learn everything at home and on your own and then class was no help at all. Very much disliked this class.
This was a tough class but Dr. Evans gives students every opportunity to earn points and do well in the class. He is a bit unorganized at times and his tests are difficult so go to class! If you want to succeed in his class make sure you study all the past tests that he makes available for the students to review.
I like Dr. Evans, I thought he was funny, but he frankly has an abysmal teaching style. Lectures do not make any sense unless you read the textbook beforehand. You will do well in this class if you are good at learning the material yourself, lectures aren't that useful but he gives Iclicker quizzes in class so you will want to be there each day.
Tests are brutal, and he does not guide you very much in telling you what you need to know. He just expects you to know everything.
I had a horrible experience. Worst teacher I had at BYU and worst class I ever took. He is confusing and has weird humor. Hard class.
I took this last Fall & still have nightmares about it. Science classes are hard simply because the material is hard. But I still, to this day, don't know how Dr. Evans hoped to help us learn with his teaching style. His class is completely based on memorizing all semester and then throws a comprehensive final at you. I learned absolutely nothing.
Dr. Evans is a 10 on the scale of entertainment value, but his lectures certainly feel disconnected from the coursework organization. He has an obviously brilliant mind, and often seems to overcomplicate the material in-lecture. Keys to the game: strong understanding of the central dogma and a lot of reviewing the test study guides. A LOT.
Going to his lectures was pointless, he rarely taught things we actually needed to know for the test.
Dr. Evans loves to ramble on about pointless things. He rarely explains challenging concepts, and expects you to understand what he is speaking about. Every other student I questioned about his class either said "I have no clue what is going on," or "I hate this class." Would recommend NEVER taking MMBIO 240 from him. EVER.
STUDY GUIDES ARE THE KEY. The test comes mostly from those EXACT questions. Even if you just remember the right answers, the tests will be a breeze. If you don't study though, you will get HAMMERED on the final. He front-loads/scares you the first week. Textbook isn't necessary, but occasionally helpful. Rent it, or use the ones in the TA lab.
Dr. Evans expects you to become an independent learner. He tells you what you need to know on the study guides, and expects you to learn the concepts via Wikipedia, Youtube, and other resources. That skill was more valuable to me than the details of the class. He also does webinars to let you watch from home which was nice.
Dr. Evan's lectures are rather pointless but he has graded iclicker questions (as in you have to get the right answer for points) every single class. Class really is rather pointless. He gives out study guides and previous tests so study those for the test.
I loved this class with Dr. Evans! He is always super willing to help outside of class. His teaching method is perhaps a bit sporadic, yes, but it's really interesting if you try to listen and follow. The great thing about his teaching style though is that he teaches you to think effectively, not just memorize. Do the study guides though!
Best class to take if you're planning on med school. He's way harder than the other MMBIO professors but it is well worth it if you're willing to put in the work. The amount you learn in his class is incredible, perfect prep for the MCAT and his tests really push you on critical reasoning and concept application. You become an independent learner.
Dr. Poole is a good teacher if you are ready to hit the ground running to learn mmbio. There is no required textbook for the class so it's hard to learn and you are expected to know a lot before class. If you are willing to put in the work to learn, he's great, otherwise, if you don't know anything like me, you will struggle.
Didn't learn anything. Probably because he didn't teach anything.
Worst person to take this class from. Does not teach you one thing. Relies on study guides that are 20-30 pages long. These study guides will save your life but they take forever to go through. Tests are hard and have nothing to do with the lectures. I'd consider taking it from someone else!
Good guy but I really would recommend another teacher. The only reason to go to class is to try and get points on iclicker questions. Didn't learn a thing from lectures and just memorized study guides to do good on tests. Doing that only get you so far, final is pretty hard.
Evans is by far the worst professor I've ever had. Class is worthless, but you have to go for the iClicker quizzes. What he "teaches" barely coincides with what is on the study guides/tests. Be prepared to teach yourself everything from the 500+ page study guide. I studied over 20 hours a week and barely scraped a B. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Professor Evans was super funny but I strongly disliked this class. I studied the study guides religiously because that is what his tests were primarily based on but because of that I feel like I truly learned nothing. There was so much material and I took this class in spring which made the work load almost unmanageable.
Honestly Dr. Evans is one of the best at BYU. Study the study guides and you're guaranteed a good grade. Take detailed notes on lectures and talk to him or his TA's, they are all awesome! Also one of the funniest professors I've ever had. Work hard, the subject is difficult regardless who you take it from, but Dr. E is by far the best choice!
Dont take this as an online class. Take it in person. Please. This class requires clarifying questions that just cant happen online. Dr. Evans was awful in responses to messages and usually just referenced his syllabus rather than helping me through a problem. If it doesnt fit in your schedule, take it another semester.
Biggest mistake of my life taking this class. Dr. Evans is a nice guy but don't think I learned a thing and it was more about being able to memorization beyond what is humanly possible. I took this class online and would never wish it upon anyone.
His class is an absolute joke. Need I say more? He gives you study guides that have nothing to do with the material you are studying, and then tests you on that material. He's definitely not a good professor to take any subject from.
Professor Evans is a terrible professor. He is a wonderful person, but he does not answer questions well. The questions he asks are confusing and misleading. He doesn't teach the material on the tests that he creates. This is by far the hardest class that I have ever taken. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!! I learned absolutely nothing from him.
Took MMBIO 240 online & he's awful! 2-3 weekly lessons you complete by watching videos he recorded before each question, except half the videos don't answer the question & require you to search the web or other sources. He says "Hwhich," "hwhat," or "hwhen" in every video. Weekly quizzes, multiple tests, and final. Recommend to someone you hate.
The class structure is absolutely appalling for this class. It consists of us being tested heavily on information that he has legitimately not taught us about and expects us to research completely on our own. The only thing you will learn in this class is to memorize 500+ answers form his study guides to even survive the tests.
Dr. Evans taught a "flipped classroom" which only works if you ask follow up questions and look up things you don't understand. The class can be frustrating at times because you lose points at every part of the class but overall it was a class that teaches you how to analyze lots of complicated data and make sense of it.
He provides all the resources you need to succeed and is very willing to help outside of class, but is very condescending towards students. The class is great if you don't minds dealing with being treated that way. One really good thing about him is that he encourages students to seek out the truth and be proactive about their learning!
So first things first he teaches you maybe 1/3 to 1/4 of what you need to know for his class. His lectures cover a couple topics that you then understand but he expects you to learn almost everything on your own. He gives "learning objectives" that are profoundly unhelpful and you have no set book to read so you don't really know where to find help
SKIP THIS PROFESSOR. I cant say enough bad things!! His lecture videos are beyond pointless. The quiz questions have absolutely nothing to do with his lecture videos. He tells you to get answers from google. His test questions are insane. If you try to get help from him he's very condescending. This class is a waste of money. Take anyone else.
Pros: Teaches the most basic parts of Molecular Biology Cons: The class is supposed to be about the deeper subjects of Molecular Biology, which he tests and quizzes on without teaching. He is disrespectful and berates students for asking for help avoid like the plague. Heck you'd learn more from getting the plague and asking your doctor questions
Lecture videos are useless. Exams and Quizzes are on things that have never been discussed in lecture videos. He seems nice but is really a very creepy, condescending and nosey person. Do not take his class. Worse class I have taken by far.
No assigned textbook because "life doesn't have a textbook". Short lecture videos that don't answer many of the questions he asks. I've never felt so belittled when asking a professor for help understanding a topic than I have talking to Dr. Evans. The only helpful thing about this class were the TA hours nearly 8AM to 8PM. Worst class I ever had.
The worst professor I've ever had. Extremely strict on grading and unclear about the parameters of assignments- as in, said I could use the internet on an assignment then accused me of cheating at the end of the semester and docked my grade a ridiculous amount. He's very intrusive, unwilling to listen, unhelpful with ?'s, doesn't care abt students.
I have never had a professor be so condescending and unsympathetic towards me even in hard circumstances. He doesn't teach anything but expects you to understand molecular biology on a Ph.D. level by finding things on your own. His tests could belong to a different class. Seems like a good guy, but I have never hated or struggled in a class so much
Took this class fully online (remote delivery). Video lectures don't cover everything so be ready to Google a lot and ask the TAs for help (you can ask Dr Evans but it might turn into a verbal microbio quiz you aren't ready for). Do the practice problems online over and over. He says buying the book is optional but it helps a TON. Hard class.
Evans is very accessible to help students, yet just as condescending (even to his TAs). Average test scores in the class are in the mid/low 60s. His tests are long and hard. He doesn't provide any text to study from either. Be prepared to study lots on Google and then be blindsided on tests. The saving grace for me was his massive curve.
He is always available for "help", but he will never answer any question. He always responds with a question. There were times when I just stopped asking because it was so unhelpful. Half the questions on the test are from things he did not teach in the lectures, but expects you to know as if you were a molecular biologist.
Please do not take this class. There is no assigned material, only a couple videos that he makes. The average test grades were mid 50's. If you find a mistake in his grading you have less than two days to tell him to get points back. If not, even if you are right, you will not get points back. Find another professor.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. The lectures and quizzes/tests have almost nothing in common. He expects you to know things before the start of the semester that I haven't even had to learn for classes that have MMBIO240 as a requirement. I can't run out of awful things to say about this class. Take it from another professor, seriously.
No mercy. Incredibly difficult tests. Condescending. Please do not take this course from him if you value having any free time. Worst professor of my college career.
Please do not take this class from him. It is not worth the sacrifice and time you'll be spending.
The hardest part about it is the tests, but Dr. Evans gives you what you need to succeed. We were encouraged to form study groups. Mine had three people including me. It was my lifeline in this class. Don't skip this part! Going over quizzes together, which are open-neighbor, saved me. Evans teaches you to think like a scientist; good MCAT prep!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Wait until next semester if needed.
I think Dr Evans would like to believe that he has negative reviews because his class is difficult. Or maybe because students can't comprehend his intelligence. But, he really has negative feedback because he acts arrogant and is certainly condescending (a common word you see in these reviews). His class is also a mess. Very disorganized.
Absolutely horrible. "lectures" were short videos with questions not related to the vid. He does not know how to make a class work at all. I dropped after two lectures but my friend taking the class now is in literal he11. I'd give it 0 or negative if I could. can't learn ANYTHING
R Paul Evans arrogant and rude. He really doesn't care about his students. Do not have him as a professor. You will regret it. Honestly he is just a terrible human.
Worst professor I've had. I went in to ask him questions sometimes outside of class, and he acted very condescending. The material he taught honestly was not that hard, but I would spend HOURS studying for the tests (doing practice questions he provided) and some of the questions would be about things we had never talked about. Don't do it
This class is the worst class I've taken in two years. Skip this on-demand class, I promise its not easy. The class avg on tests was 50% but there is a massive curve at the end. DONT TAKE IT... STOP SCROLLING, trust me.
This professor should be fired. Absolutely worst class I have ever taken. Not only does he make it extremely difficult with his lack of teaching skills, but he goes out of his way to make his students feel inferior and stupid. He will track how long things take on canvas and question everything you do. He will accuse you of cheating every chance.
Really hard class. Definitely use the TAs or Dr. Evans to succeed in this class. There is a massive curve at the end of the course.
The curve at the end of the class will save your grade, but getting there is torturous. The test averages are always ridiculously low because the information included in the lectures is only a fraction of what you're tested on. That's not a secret - he's proud of his philosophy.
Very disorganized. He said we could use any textbook online for the class. His lectures were prerecorded, out of order, a complete mess. I did not like the fact that the course was online and the lectures had almost no content in them. Each class lecture was about 15 minutes, his class was a disaster. For those taking MMBIO240 choose someone else.
The worst professor I've had at BYU. He is very strict and merciless which I'm fine with as long as the professor can but he couldn't do even do that. I avoided his office hours because he would assume I hadn't watched the recorded lectures if I didn't understand some concept and just made me feel dumb. I never left his office hours feeling good.
Wow. I have never had such a bad experience with a faculty member. His class made me reconsider my major and even my life plans. He is constantly correcting students' syntax and punctuation while the majority of the course contains glaring errors even I wouldn't make. This man made me cry on several occasions. He is condescending and unkind.
Dr. Evans' conduct at the University and in the community is abominable. He is frankly unkind, condescending, and derogatory toward students. Please take this class from anyone else. Dr. Evans will likely attribute his poor rating to the difficulty of the class, but he is just a tremendously difficult person. I don't know how he still has his job.
This professor made learning impossible. If you didn't achieve an A+ in Honors Chem you'll be lost. Paul doesn't give explanations on subjects, nor is emphatic to confusion, and he doesn't want you to succeed. If you like guessing 90% of the time, he's the right teacher. Don't think about getting help anywhere else, he will fail you for doing so.
His quizes are open internet but his questions are impossible to find anywhere. Hope you like reading journal article after journal article just to inevitably guess and then have to write about why your answer is or isn't correct. Tests are impossible to study for because he has about 10,000 quiz questions that could possible be on each exam.
Dr. Evans has turned this 1 credit course into a living nightmare for all of his students. He teaches approximately 5% of the material covered on his assessments, and is the worst professor at Brigham Young University. My 4th grade science teacher could do a better job. If there are any other 241 options at the time you're reading this, run.
Most likely the worst professor I've ever had the pleasure of taking at BYU. Quiz grades are ridiculously hard and half the material is never taught/covered. If you like guessing on every other question, Evans is the man for you. Hardest class I'm taking this semester and I'm generally a straight-A student. TA schedule is wack, seems unprofessional
This professor is pretentious, rude, and unhelpful. The material he uses (all of his lectures + the lab notebook) are several years old, created by another (much better) professor, and his tests are both deceptive and contain new information not included in or unrelated to the course material. Avoid taking a class from this professor.
This platform doesn't allow me to accurately rate just how appalling this professor is. I wouldn't even call him a professor. You will not be quizzed on what you have been taught, and to your surprise, you will find you will also not be taught. Grades in a fascinating way, his favorite number is zero.
His ego gets in the way, making a 1-credit class a 3-credit class. He tests us on concepts that he has not explained and makes seemingly simple topics very complex in order for his students to lose points.
TAKE FROM ANOTHER PROFESSOR. I don't know how he can make this 1-credit class as a 3-credit one, but I feel that the only thing he wants is to fail students. He even told the TAs not to help students too much. It's not worth it to take a 1-credit class with such a bad setting from him.
Dr. Evans is the most inconsistent professor I have ever had. He is currently using all of the teaching materials that were previously used by another professor, and then he changes all the quizzed/tested material so that it is beyond the scope of the course. DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER this professor, not worth losing your 4.0 GPA on a 1 credit class.
Dr. Evans was the rudest, most inconsiderate professor I have taken a class from. His quizzes were unclear and almost everyone got below 75% on all of them. Dr. Evans was never willing to help students who had to miss class. He caused a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety. Dr. Evans is condescending and makes students feel like they're not smart.
So so so bad. Do not take a class from him whatever you do. I have never dealt with with someone so rude and bad at teaching. Horrible professor who does not care about his students or helping them succeed. No extra credit, no retakes, no second chances. He always assumes the worst and that students are cheating.
BIGGEST regret of BYU was taking MMBIO 241 from Evans. 241 could be a really cool class but he goes out of his way to make things impossibly hard and has no care for helping you succeed. He's rude, condescending and grades unfairly. THIS IS YOUR WARNING. DON'T take a class from this professor.
Dr. Evans is a very intelligent and well-published scientist. However, he lacks empathy, respect for students, and trust in students. Every time I spoke with him I felt belittled and intimidated. His tests are unreasonably difficult. He made an active effort to remove helpful ressources and restrict the way that TAs could interact with students.
I had the unique displeasure of taking 240 AND 241 from Dr. Evans. Huge mistake. His tests are far beyond the scope of the class, and often feel like a reading comprehension test rather than an exam testing my understanding of the content. His objective seems to be to make students hate molecular biology. Don't understand why he still teaches.
Dr. Evans has truly mastered not the field of teaching biology, but rather making you believe you're in a nightmare from which you will never wake. Okay, but really. He recommends you to google instead of following a textbook, removes points for the most unnecessary things, teaches immaturely, and is a condescending communicator. Save yourself.
Ya it's all true, I did well in this class but it felt like the class was designed to work against you. Dr. Evans assumed the worst of people and graded very harshly. The final was keyed wrong by 20% (I suspect he did it on purpose) so everyone thought they failed, then he changed it last minute. That's just an example, it's bad
He doesn't really teach and gives you way too much homework to be able to actually learn the material yourself. He's also not very nice.
Many of the things we were tested on were not mentioned in his lecture videos. He expects his students to look up the information if it is not included in the lecture. There are no exam reviews for any of the tests and the way questions are asked are intended to trip you up.
Avoid taking MMBIO241 with Prof. Evans if possible. He sets an unreasonably high bar and seems to delight in making the class overly difficult. However, using Unstuck ai and other study tools can help mitigate the challenge.
Too bad there isn't a rating lower than 1... Rude in his grading and unnecessarily hard, doesn't help but his responses are condescending. Tests are also very difficult, the test averages were below 50% I didn't listen to the bad reviews, but please listen to this one and don't take from him. You will regret it.
He literally states in his syllabus that he will not teach you everything you need to know for the homework and quizzes. He expects you to take principles from lectures and research to answer the questions. Each lecture (3/week) comes with 40-70 homework questions that you have to do this for. This class in insanely hard and makes me hate science.
This is the worst class you could ever take. I took it online to have more flexibility, WRONG! Assignments are due in the middle of the day and he is the pickiest grader. You spend most of your time learning to meet his unrealistic expectations and you don't learn. Jusst take it from an on campus professor!
There's a lot of bad reviews here, and though the course was hard and information-dense, I thought he did a good job highlighting the important things and explaining concepts. All of his lectures have detailed illustrations, too.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Genuinely have never been so frustrated at a class, let alone an online class before. Dr. Evans will comment on literally everything you do. You think he won't have time? "Oh there are too many students he won't go through EVERYTHING I do and critique it...." WRONG. He will. Please, please, please don't take this class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! I REPEAT DO NOT!! He is a picky grader and comments on literally every you write. He literally gave me a zero on my quiz. I took this class thinking that it would be little flexible for my schedule but I hate to say it was the most demanding class ever. I would rather take it with a professor on CAMPUS!!
