Great professor! Lectures are interesting, interactive with the class, and easy to follow. Reviews before exams, tests are not difficult, grades on a curve, extra credit options. Highly recommended.
This teacher is one of the best ones I have ever had! This class is an eye opening experience, the teacher makes the lessons so interesting and he is so knowledgable in his area... IT IS A GREAT CLASS TO LEARN ABOUT THE TRUE HISTORY OF THE US! Definitely recommended 100%.... =)
Rich is an excellant instructor. His class is well rounded, his lectures on subjects which would otherwise be boring he makes interesting with his dry humor and at the same time is very knowledgable in what he's talking about. I highly reccomend his class.
He was very easy-going. He'd go over everything that was to be on the test... and they weren't too hard. Would take another class of his in a heartbeat!
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! He is one of the best teachers I have ever had between NY & Cali. Great sense of humor, presents the material in a very interesting manner and organized. Definitley recommend to anyone- it would be worth it.
If you want to really get a realistic portrayal of American history, professor Schultz is the guy to take! He teaches you the facts about some the fore fathers of this country useing Howard Zinns, A Peoples History of the United States as one of the text books. I looked forward to this class every day and cant wait to take 110 with him.
This teacher knows his stuff. He tries to give both sides of the story without muddling the facts. He asks questions that make you really think and class discussions get interesting when he gets going. No nonsense kind of guy (no late work and no BS). Just do the work and you'll do fine.
Rich is a awesome professor! He makes the class fun and interesting. only 2 tests and a couple papers, but he grades on a curve. He made me want to come to class and learn. easy "A".
Makes it interesting, so knowledgeable, helpful, fair, interesting homework, great teaching from a critical point of view. History from the view of THE PEOPLE.I was excited to go to his class because it was so enlightening. Probably the best history teacher at City College! And a little plus:he is superhot! :)
I was there for education not poltical view.
Rich is a great history teacher. Go into his class with an open mind and listen to what he has to say. He is a young teacher and really wants eveyone to learn. His tests are well made with little trickery unlike most history tests I have taken. He is not an easy A but if you do all your work an A is possible.
Great teacher! His focus is on the less expressed views... opens your eyes and gets your brain thinking. He tries to "un-dumb" his students, which i feel is great. Young, so his perspective is generally relevant to his students.
Rich is an awesome teacher!!! He gives a few assignments to encourage participation and engage us, but they are easy to do. His perspective is refreshing because he makes history interesting. AWESOME GUY!!! TAKE HIS CLASS!
One of the best teachers at City College. Doesn't get caught up in some political agenda, but puts the learning responsibility in your court. Rich, you rock man! By the way, anyone who still needs the book: I'm selling my Out of Many Textbook for cheaper than you'd find anywhere. IM [email protected] if interested.
Great teacher. No question one of the best professors on campus. Showing up is mandatory, so don't take his classes if you don't go.
Great guy! Way to many papers to write
Schultz is a very interesting teacher. He offers extra credit for students and very concern about his students. I recommend him to everyone. Anyways I still got the book of Out of Many and Howard Zinn A People's history of the United States. Email me at [email protected]
good speaker
gooood
He is a very good teacher and he has a mellow attitude...which makes him attractive...his class is pretty normal and his lectures are very good!
He is a really good teacher. Class lectures are always intersting. He does require a lot of writing assignments, so be prepared.
great teacher, really funny and a great speaker. his delivery of the lectures is great and it keeps you interested. lots of writing assignments, but he gives extra credit and grades tests on a curve, so it balances out. and he is pretty lenient when grading papers. highly recommend him!
WOW!! Was SO not interested in History when I signed up for the class... Rich made it incredibly interesting. Took it in Intersession, so it was information overload, but he engaged the students in the learning process and made the material interesting enough for me to stay awake the entire 4.5 hours every morning! Thanks Rich! E.D.
The Best teacher I've ever had. He changed my view toward the life in a good way and I'm glad that I met him. Thank you, Rich, very very very much.
He's a very smart teacher. Easy to learn from and willing to help you understand if you didn't get anything. You write alot but fun topics noting boring. He loves coffee!!
Good teacher, tries to get you interested in history. Exams are mostly on the lectures and attendance are mandatory. Lots of writing. Would recommend to you if planning to take 109. I still have the two books,if interested [email protected]
this dude is FIRST RATE, i'd take him again for another history course, not only that, he's SO cute
Really good looking! His looks and sarcasm alone will make U.S. history fun.
One of best teachers I've ever had. He made history INTERESTING, not just the facts but interactive class. Skepticism, HUMOR!! Books are helpful, Lectures are AWESOME!! There is writing, essay, but they make you THINK, new perspective on life and history!! I would defn take this professor again for another history course!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! A+!
He is an extremely fair and nice professor. Several writing assignments, but he is willing to help you in any way. Midterm/Final are multiple choice. He makes history a fun subject to learn. Take him!
totally awesome prof.
Amazing professor! He's funny, cynical, entertaining and makes you look at history differently. You won't be disappointed.
It's my experience that most teachers who aren't teaching a "major" class don't seem to be interested in the subject, but not with Schultz. Even though I'm a lefty-commie-pinky-pig too, I like his knowledge and passion about the subject. It doesn't hurt that he's hot as well. He's th best teacher I've had so far.
Excellent Professor. Knew his stuff. Made it more than interesting- he made it entertaining and memorable. Very useful and interesting papers. He makes you actually learn, and LIKE it. I can't think of a single bad thing to say about him. A fabulous professor, Take him any chance you get!!!
City College is very lucky to have this Professor. He should be teaching at a better college. Take advantage while you are at City and take his class. He is extremely smart and his class was a pleasure to be in. Highly recommend.
I would whole heartily recommend Prof Schultz. He made history interesting and fun. His grading on the mid-term and final are curve based and he is more than willing to help on any writing assignment in the class. I am now looking forward to history 110!
Very interesting lectures/discussions. He does a good job trying to make history interesting and relevant, but he can sometimes 'dumb it down' too much for those who are especially ignorant. Grade depends upon 2 MC tests graded on a curve, 1 big research paper, and a few small essays/ project papers.
Wow! A truly great professor. His lectures are so insightful and brutally truthful, he almost brought me to tears on a few occasions. Dosen't sugar coat anything. Taking his class will really make you question this country.
Rich teaches an entertaining class. He uses film to elaborate on topics touched.Hes a friendly easy going guy.Presents the material in a clear way.The class bends a little too far left for my liking, but hes always receptive to differing views that bend the other way so speak up if you dont agree.Zinn was required reading, wish that had been left out.
I took this class once a week, and all you have to do is to read the book and try to jot down anything he wrote down on the blackboard. He is a joker too!
Prof Schultz is an awesome teacher. He's extremely knowledgeable and has a humorous, satirical way of giving lectures. It is very effective considering all the touchy, controversial subjects covered in history. He keeps students interested, considering how I took his 3 hour classes starting at 8 in the morning. One of the best teachers I've had.
He is a great teacher. I was really impressed by the way he teach and the humor he brought to the class. History as we all know is a boring class but he made is so enjoyable for everyone.
Easy A. Very easy class. Exams only from his notes and he gives alot of points for class participation and attendance.
GREAT TEACHER BUT THIS CLASS CAN GET BORING.... SAME STYLE OF TEACHING EVERYDAY TAKE NOTES AND JUST BE THERE YOU REALLY DONT HAVE TO READ JUST PAY ATTENTION AND MAKE SURE U CATCH ON TO EVERY JOKE HE THROWS UR WAY :) EASY PASS....
This is one of the best and most dedicated teachers at City. He's funny, and anyone can express their opinion. He gives a few essay assignments, but if you follow the simple instructions, you'll do fine. I would take him in the future if I needed the class. I like his honesty and how he doesn't put a spin on history. Take him if you can.
Not only teaches but will make sure you UNDERSTAND the WHY of historical events. Has some pretty funny jokes. Relaxed class environment. Work is pretty easy. A good chunk of reading but won't quiz unless he finds there isn't much class participation. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Ridiculous teacher! Gives way too much busy work, and anal with grading papers.
Truly a gem of a teacher! I took the online history class. He was very well prepared and provided and provoked good conversation/open discussion. The text is dry, but his notes are excellent. Secondary book is Zinn which fantastically compliments the text. He is extremely fair with grading..just do the assignments and pay attention.
Probably my favorite teacher at City College & I took him online. Would LOVE to meet him in person. He's fantastically open-minded and encourages class involvement and rewards critical thinking. He's really great - take him!
FANTASTIC professor! I thought I'd lost my interest in history prior to taking his class. His lectures are informative, clear, and entertaining (all this considering it was Friday morning). He clearly respects his students and wants everyone to do well. My only complaint is that he isn't teaching more sections at City!
Excellent Teacher! Makes class very interesting and encourages students points of views. A lot of term papers but, Its worth it and for the majority, you pick your own topics.. I learnt so much in this class and wish he taught more subjects.
He is an amzazing teacher. Funny, realistic extremely funny. I didnt learned much from the book but i learned a lot from him. I took a friday class and every friday i had a smile on for the rest of the day.
This teacher was very good his class is easy if you are born American for the foreign students it can be hard to understand his jokes and some of the terms that he uses. you really have to attend the classes, read both of the books and pay attention to his lectures to get an A. start early on your research paper CZ its worth a lot of points.
Not enough good can be said of Richard Schultz. This man is the creme de la creme de San Diego. Viva!
He is very helpful and doesnt make you fall asleep with his lectures. He does take points off your grade when you dont raise your hand and get involved with the class, which sucks because i am shy. He kind of rambles on and if you arnt on your toes you miss alot of the notes. He writes down key terms but never fully tells you what they are.
Hands down best professor I've ever had. I took him for 109 and 110 and he completely changed the way I think about American history. He really just wants the students to learn. He isn't super easy, but well worth it. It's much more than just a History class. I wish I could retake his classes.
The Best, prior comments say it all...
He takes a good steaming poo on the founding fathers. He can't emphasize enough how much he hates George Washington. Total apathetic liberal, his lectures can be entertaining, but if you show up to class and take good notes, you can pass without ever reading the text. He is very critical on the research and other papers.
This class was very interesting. He can be very passionate about his beliefs but none the less he brings up points that you can reflect on. His class is not that difficult as long as you start on your research paper asap you will do fine. Pretty straightforward about his midterm and final exam. Overall he was a great teacher!
Professor Schultz is very compassionate and very helpful. Always encouraging and reaching out. I wasn't fond of online classes but I learned a lot. Read read read and take lots of notes, read the Learning Modules and the assigned reading from the texts. Participate weekly in discussions, no reason to get less than an A in this class
Hands down the best teacher I have ever had. Smart, funny, and endearing. If you are eager to learn, he is just as eager to teach you.
Rich's sense of humor makes the subject of history entertaining as well as interesting. The only thing he assigns for homework is the readings. He is clear on what he expects in the essays and will check sources. I recommend this class if you aren't lazy and read the books! Excellent instructor.
Best professor !! He is funny the reading he assigns is great. Has different views of things he is awesome !!!
Out of all the classes I have taken at City, this class was by FAR the best and most influential to me. First and foremost Rich is a babe, so I had no issue going to class. Secondly, he's HILARIOUS! He made history so fun and intriguing that I never got bored. Even though he is a fun teacher you do have to work hard. Grades on a curve. Study notes!
Professor Shultz is one of the most interesting teachers on campus. His lectures are always entertaining and funny. He puts a nice spin in teaching history. Taking notes is the key to success because midterm and final consist mostly of the power point presentations. A friendly note to future students is to FINISH the research paper early. Good Luck
Absolutely LOVED Mr. Schultz! Interesting lectures and really opens your eyes to US history. I only wish that I needed to take HIST 110 with him--too bad a previous class I took already filled that pre-req. If you can take him, TAKE HIM. He is great. He does have a few papers due but they are relatively easy.
I loved taking US HISTORY 109 w Schultz. He was hilarious and put history into a new outsiders perspective on American culture. Not only does he know how to connect to students but he seems like a very cool man who has lived a very cool life all over the world. I hope that at his age I am as cool and smart as he is. I plan on taking all his classes
Lets start by saying I HATE history with a passion. I find it completely boring. Thankfully Professor Schultz is very interesting and makes it understandable such as comparing to recent events. He is very interesting, older and always says stories about his adventures. If you dont do well on the midterm then do great on the final. Highly Recommend!
He is a badass, good looking, and hilarious. I highly recommend.
He is an awesome teacher! Makes history fun! Totally recommend this class. He also has a beautiful voice which helps you to love the subject! He sounds like a voice artist! So friendly, so helpful! Always available if you have any question
If you want to witness what a caring professor looks like, take him! He encourages students to be their very best and is accessible outside of class. Just start the papers early. The history he teaches is not the crap you learned in school which was very refreshing. Amazing class and teacher.
Absolutely sensational class. From day one, you'll notice this is no ordinary history course. They say this department is the department known for "stay woke". Well my friends get ready to be woken up. Amazing professor and he gives you the truth about history. Things you've NEVER been taught before. Truly has inspired me in many ways.
He's the definition of a great professor. Lectures are informative, funny, and relevant . His grading is prompt and comes with excellent feedback. Although he's pretty critical of everything and everyone he talks about in history (lol) he's actually a really down to earth and relatable guy. Just show up, do you work, and it's an easy A.
One of the good ones. Brings insight to how we got to where we are today. His comedy is on spot for the topic and wanders from the droll to the daft and the poignant. Not war-heavy or date-and-place fussy. Fair grader but not a pushover. Sincerely cares. Riding this pony to my graduation next semester via HIST110. I wish I knew about him earlier!
I'll start by saying history is my least fav. Prof Schultz was an outstanding teacher. No memorization of dates, but he gives you a REAL understanding of history. I took him for two semesters in a row. The classes were 3 hours long and he kept the lectures fun and interesting. There are a few large papers to write, but that's it for hw. TAKE HIM!
Clear grading criteria, he explains every assignment and exactly what he is looking for and as long as you can follow instructions and deliver you should be fine. Had him once a week 3 hours and thought he was pretty funny. Although, sometimes I felt like his humor was offensive to other students.
The semester project was a 10-page thesis like essay. The workload was also pretty heavy. Other than that, it was a great class. Professor Schultz was always available to help and responded to emails timely. The things he talks about can be intense, however very thought provoking and gets you thinking. Tests are easy as long as you study.
Hes great. He assesses you more on how well you understand the material through discussion posts and papers instead of having you memorize things for a test. Also there are no tests or quizzes! I took an 8 week course and I think we had 5 papers that were a majority of the final grade. Hes flexible so if you need help or accommodation, just ask!
Protect Schultz at all costs! He's a gem! Really great view on politics and American History, he doesn't try and slam his personal views down your throat, but says things in a way to make those who think otherwise think again--which I dug. Exceptional feedback, thoughtful and constructive. Great class, definitely consider taking one of his courses!
Ever have that one teacher in your past that you truly admired and learned from? Schultz is that guy. He brings history to life, will sharpen your critical thinking skills, and teach you more than you thought possible about history, all the while making you laugh along the way. Highest possible recommendation.
This has been one of my favorite classes I have taken at city college, I actually wish I had more time in the class. Rich is really down to earth and makes learning history enjoyable. I would take any of his classes again. This class had a great dynamic with awesome discourse. Please take his class in person, you will not regret!
Disclaimer: I took him over intersession. He's an absolutely fantastic professor who really wants to you to succeed. The key to success in this class is watching his lecture videos, doing the essay work on time, and writing thoughtful discussion questions while responding to other people too. Did I mention he's a really funny guy?
does not live up to the hype
