Not bad, first time teaching. Not the best of classroom management skills, but definitely will get applicable knowledge in class.
she states the obvious too much. the class really drags because her lectures are totally just common sense. and her lectures suck. she doesn't even have slides. she just writes random junk on the blackboard. so you're notes are about.. nothing!
She can't stay on topic, make sure that you READ the book. It is the only way to pass her test/quizzes. They are not hard, but she still expects you to understand many of the major concepts that she doesent even touch on in class. I eventually wanted to stop going to class. The paper, she doesn't explain and then has CRAZY grading procedures.
I had her during her second semester here, and thoroughly enjoyed it! She takes one day to explain the info. and the second to discuss. She always made the discussions interesting and allowed others to share their opinions about anything we talked about. Gives you study guides for the quizzes telling you exactly what you need to know. I loved it!
Class is pretty easy. I was bored most of the time. The tests and quizzes all come directly from the book. The teacher is nice and friendly, but she doesn't have good teaching skills. We spent most of the time in class just talking and when test time came, none of the things we talked about were on the test. Just read the book and you'll do fine.
Ahhhhh! This lady is a disaster. She is the most disorganized, scatterbrained individual on the planet who should never be put in charge of teaching a college class. All she says is "Sociology is so cool/so fun!"--and believe me, it's not. You must read the book in order to pass the tests.
She was a little scatter-brained, but more than makes up for it with ease of learning. She old-school writes everything on the board and her handwritting is messy, but the notes are concise and easy to understand. A very nice person, she made learning sociology fun!
I loved her! She was extremely helpful on anything you don't understand, the tests and quizzes are mostly common sense and what isn't she puts on a study guide. We watched a lot of clips from tv shows and movies and i really understood what sociology was about. She doesn't try to teach it to you, she tries to show you.
She was a really sweet lady. The class was easy to follow if you study, listen in class and write notes. She was acceptable to other peoples opinions. I would recommend her as a teacher.
Allows you to miss days. Essays are easy. Get out early. Pay attention, talk in class and no problems. Funny.
Rachael worked with me personally because of an Incomplete I had in her course, so I've learned that she is very helpful. Class is pretty easy, tests and papers aren't too bad at all. Don't skip, read the chapters, take notes, and participate and you should be fine. If you do need to get in touch with her, BE PERSISTENT is my only advice.
Rachael rules. She does a good job of giving real life sociological examples. I've had her for deviant behavior and sociology 101 and she is my favorite professor so far at UNCG. Any person who makes below an A or B in her class has obviously not read the assigned reading.
I loved her class. She was a fun person, and I'd love to get to know her more. Tests and quizes were super easy - especially because she put notes AND outlines of the chapters on BB. Allowed to miss class often, and it's okay to have off days in class. If you talk a few times during discussions, you'll do great.
Rachael is an awesome professor! She was so willing to help with anything and was very openminded about opinions in discussions. Very bubbly & fun personality! As just taking her class in Fall 09, I WOULD TOTALLY RECOMMEND HER! :)
She is fun and a good professor. I was already familiar with sociology before this class and if i hadnt been then i would have been in trouble. But if you like sociology and know all the terms then this is a great class. Lots of disscussions and she is super nice.
She is my favorite proffessor at UNCG she is so awesome and fun she tries SO hard to make the class interesting and you can tell she's such a caring person i absolutely LOVE AND RECOMMEND her!!!!
She is a great professor and I would recommend her to everyone. Quizzes and exams are easy.
LOVED this class soo much that I changed my major to Sociology! Amazing teacher who is easy to understand and fun. Can't wait to take her Criminology course, I recommended her to anyone! Super easy course.
i love her teaching style that i am taking another one of her classes next semester. i highly recommend her.
Amazing professor. She has many examples for EVERYTHING she explains. Her test/quizzes are easy IF you pay attention and go to class. Her notes are just keywords and you have to pay attention and make your own notes. She loves her job and wants all her students to understand the concept of subjects she teaches.
Great teacher! Uses example that apply to real world situations.
Rachael is THE best professor/teacher I have ever had. She makes learning fun with her laid back attitude and is very excited to teach her classes. I have taken all of her classes and do NOT regret taking any of them. Her class is not only easy (if you pay attention) but it is very interesting. I would definitely recommend her classes to anyone.
Wonderful all around teacher, very understanding and does her job well. Very fun and enthusiastic about what she does and what she teaches.
She's the best teacher ever. You can tell she cares about her students, if more professor's were like her it'd be a good world
She is very energetic and fun. Passionate about what she does and eager to help you out. Attendance is lax, but you will understand more if you go to class. Super easy A. She also posts outlines and "lectures" online.
Fun teacher very kind and approachable. Cancels class often but sends out notification gives lots of extra credit which is a plus! Shes fun and a great Professor
She is really cool and is very passionate about sociology and her classes are always fun and interesting.
She is a very good teacher. She explains her material well. I suggest reading the text book but look at her outlines to know what to read. Her notes are simple so that's why it's better to read. She allows up to 6 free absent days, after that she'll take 1 point off your participation grade. I liked her a lot
She is the best instructor ever. You can tell she cares about her students, if more professor's were like her the world would be a better place. She is really passionate about sociology and her classes are fun and interesting. I wish she taught more classes. Absolutely love her, she is truly the greatest professor EVER.
Seriously, stop. If you are considering this teacher: TAKE HER! She is amazing and as the comments below me have stated she is very passionate about what she's teaching and she's easy. Her outlines make it easy to know what to read and her discussions are spot on. TAKE HER!! Best choice I've ever made.
she is fun and only teaches need to know information that is brief
Amazing professor, taking her for a summer course, keeps you engaged, work is not tough, One paper, minoring in Sociology because of her.Her whole class I would describe as INTERESTING.
Professor Patterson is pretty awesome. I'm taking her summer session course and so far her tests are easy if you study. I love her teaching style. She lectures and likes to do in class activities. She's also pretty cute.
EASY class. All you have to do is read the text and show up to most of the classes. Attendance isn't required. Patterson is very interesting, a little chatty at times but fun. Take the class!
She is an amazing teacher and attendance isnt required. She is funny and helps you relate to the things youre learning. Take her and you will get a good grade!
LOVE rachael patterson!!! she is one of the best at uncg! shes very funny and all over the place with energy. class is an easy a but dont take it thinking you should skip all the time. there is no point, she is a delight! i have never laughed so much in a class!
LOVE HER SO MUCH! She is goofy, hilarious, passionate about what she does, and eager to see her students succeed. I love going to this class. 4 quizzes, lowest grade dropped. 2 exams, no final. No meeting for final exam time either. A paper, and lots of easy extra credit. Highly recommend her. She's awesome!
She is a nice professor.BUT she is not a very good teacher. The lectures were spent with her and other students sharing stories. If you like taking notes, this class is NOT for you. There are no slides. You must read the book on your own in order to pass. The test and quizzes are tricky. Not much time was spent on what to know for test.
I love Rachael. She is one of the best professors that I've had a UNCG
Her class was super easy and she is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. Her lectures are very laid back and easy to understand.
Drops lowest quiz grade. Most of class is common sense, but if you want an A I'd read the chapters. Taking notes is hard because it's a lot of discussion, but she's VERY interesting. Most days are skippable, especially if you read the chapter, but be there for movie days. Lowest quiz grade is dropped, and exam questions are pulled from quizes.
Ms. Patterson is an amazing Professor. She is very passionate about people and qualified in her field of study. Her discussions get intense sometimes because they are directly related to real life issues, but for me it made learning the material more practical and memorable. Come to class, make an A.
Goofy, hilarious, let you curse to express your emotion for the sake of soc. she's compassionate, love to see her students excel. I love her class because its way too interactive even tho its 8 am. 8 easy quizzes (if you study the chp), lowest grade dropped. No final exam. A paper, and lots of easy extra credit. Highly recommend if you want an "A"
Awesome teacher! Rachael is a very comfortable and inspirational teacher. Has no tolerance for students that disrupt and are not there to learn. She's really excited about Sociology and her students. It's also just an easy class! She definitely wants you to pass!
Rachael is awesome! She is a great professor, and person. She gives a quiz at the end of every chapter, some multiple choice, some in the form of short essays (that you do at home then turn in). She makes things interesting and really gets the class involved. There are no cumulative tests, the final is a paper. BONUS: She cancels class ALL THE TIME
I loooove Rachael! I really wish that I could take more classes with her. She's funny as well! The tests and papers are easy as well. Take her if you get the chance! You won't regret it.
Rachael is one of the best professors I have had at UNCG!!!! She is really down to earth and her classes are very interesting. Only 2 exams, 4 quizzes, and deviance paper. If I wasnt about to graduate in May, I would take her again just because she is so GREAT!!!!!!
Ms. Patterson is the most wonderful professor! She's extremely laid back and funny, and many of her classes are interactive. We usually discuss social issues in engaging conversations that lead back to the topic we're learning. She doesn't assign much work, usually a few 1-2 page papers, or multiple choice quizzes. Great professor!
She is an excellent professor. I am a high school student and she treated just like any other college student. I would definently take her class again!!!
Ms. Patterson is the most chill professor at UNCG. She is hilarious, and really cares about her students. I'd take her again in a heartbeat.
She is an amazing prof! She's a bit goofy at times but fits with the lecture. She doesn't spin off into other things during lecture. The book was needed some things she would talk about you would need the book to get more info. She drops the lowest quiz and gives extra. In other words she's one prof you def want to have.
Rachael is spectacular.
Everything comes out of the book, so you definitely need it. Attendance isn't mandatory, and the course load is light. The only reason students get upset with their grades is because they take advantage of the attendance policy and have no clue what's going on. This class is a good breather, and eye-opening too. Rachael is so kind.
The class is amazing!! Shes a fun teacher who didn't press attendance in her 8am class. I only went to classes very rarely but when I did attend she was always full of energy and he lectures were easy to understand and retain.
Would have been a great class if she did not cancel class constantly. We would miss several weeks at a time, which was great until test time came around. But, her test were fairly easy if you remembered everything she said. The few times we were in class her lectures where very interesting and informational.
She is amazing and she hardly gives any work! You will have some days off.
The BEST!!!
Honestly, she's a lazy teacher who doesn't really seem that much like she knows what she's talking about. She's also one of the nicest, most down-to-earth professors I've ever had. Her tests are mildly challenging, you at least have to review the material and read the book. Most of her class is focused on discussion and she has a great personality.
Amazing teacher! You can get by without the book, but it definitely helps to have it. Relatable and easy to get along with. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll want to go to class. Test's aren't terrible, but do study.
Lectures are great and very inspirational. She lets you know what is important and will be on the tests. I didn't buy the book and was fine, she gives you note outlines online. Take notes in class on what she says as well as what is on the board.
Interesting lady, didn't dread having an 8AM (as much). You can do without the book, but it helps to have it. Quizzes are identical to lectures, so taking notes is wise.
She's super nice and funny, but can be scatter-brained: syllabus once said we needed to study ch8 for a quiz; her book was an older edition, meaning her ch8 was our ch6, which we find out day of quiz. Watched a few movies in class. Short reflections count as attendance. Quizzes aren't SUPER easy but they aren't difficult; read and pay attention
Her attendance policy is very liberal & she cancels frequently. Attendance is taken five times by asking you to write a couple sentences about class - only 5% of your grade. Quizzes are the majority of the grade, but they're MC and straight from the textbook. She is incredibly scatterbrained and easily confused people without a sociology background
She's all over the place and often trails off the subject. Quizzes and test are easy if you read and come to at least one class on the subject. She recently stopped taking attendance. Group projects are your best chance at understanding anything, she goes deep into helping you understand. Lectures aren't very interesting.
The. Best. Teacher. Anyone could have. Absolutely loved her. She does very well of making sure everyone understands the material. Not a lot of reading or homework. Just show up, listen, and participate. She loves participation, and cussing. If you're considering sociology, please take her. Definitely wish she taught more classes.
Dr. Patterson is a great woman who is passionate about what she teached, and hilarious. Class is always fun, or an adventure to say the least. All you have to do is show up, pay attention, and you can pass with an A.
This class is very interesting but Ms. Patterson can sometimes go off on tangents for very long periods of times. This can be very frustrating when there is a board full of material that hasnt been addressed that will be on the test next class. Overall she means well and did provide a disclaimer that her class had no structure in the beginning.
This is my favorite professor! She is very knowledgeable in her subject while also making class interesting and fun. She is not like most professors with a structured and strict schedule, but it works to an advantage. I have a lot of respect for her and I learned a lot in this class. I would recommend this course and Rachael to anyone. Very kind.
I LOVED RACHAEL. TAKE THIS CLASS!!! No attendance policy but you're going to want to come to class bc she's so awesome. There's a couple movie days but most of it is lecture and discussions. She makes you feel welcomed and loved. She offered extra credit throughout the semester but it really is an easy A if you come to class.
In the beginning, she seems unorganized, but as the semester continued, I realized she was just nervous. She knows what she's doing and good at it. She doesn't make the work harder then it needs to be, and she gives you everything you need to understand the work. READ, AND YOU WILL PASS!! She calls her test quiz, but they are 40 questions . :
Easy, teaches but as well understandable, cares about your success
Professor Patterson has a great attitude. She doesnt make things harder than what they need to be. Attendance isnt mandatory, however, I recommend going to class because she gives interesting lectures. If you read the chapters in the book and take notes during the lectures, you should be fine on the quizzes. Definitely recommend her.
She's so funny and tries to teach the material in a way that is easy to understand. You have group assignments and 4 tests so just show up on those days and you will pass with an A. She gives extra credit opportunities and I would recommend reading the chapters she assigns for tests because that's where her questions come from.
I took this class online. She's nice but doesn't know how to use canvas and spams you with 30-40 notifications every day (not exaggerating). Takes points off discussions for no reason and doesn't tell you why.
She's a fun person who cares about your success in the class. She gives the material in a way that is easy to understand and offers extra credit. Attendance isn't mandatory but I highly recommend it. If you go to class, pay attention, and review your notes , this is going to be your favorite class of the semester.
great person but if you like organized, specific notes, you cannot take her class. the whole time is spent discussing personal stories, not sociology. but tests are very easy and attendance doesn't matter so I had fun.
The professor is friendly even though we only knew her online. She was understanding and the workload was moderate. 5 discussion board posts, 4 writing assignments, 3 quizzes, and a reflection paper.
Prof. Patterson has a great personality. At times she can be scatter brained a bit. If your going to take notes really listen because her hand writting can be hard to understand. The notes on canvas are just outlines, so print them off and follow along. I believe if you take notes or get someone elses ans tudy you will be fin on the exam and paper.
One of the best humanities prof I had so far! I'm so thankful I took her class. She is relatable, understanding, and has a good personality. I would take her over any soc prof, again. A few papers along assignments and 3 quizzes -- please use the study guide. Don't miss out on taking her class. Best of luck!!
Really nice and understanding that life happens. Had her for deviant behavior during COVID so I cant attest to her in-person teaching capability, but Im sure its good. Just do the discussions and quizzes and youll pass. Small paper at the end.
I took this class online but I've had Professor Patterson in class before. She is a great professor. She explains things in a clear way and is hilarious. She's a fair grader and easy to talk to because she understands sometimes life gets in the way. 10/10 definitely recommend.
shes really nice. didnt have her in person but from interactions online shes nice. gives good feedback on your discussion posts and assignments. interesting subject. watched a really cool documentary. 5 quizzes, 4 discussion posts, one assignment and a final reflection. great class overall :D
She's caring and nice, the class is super easy: no exams, a couple discussions, 4 quizzes (lowest dropped), and a final reflective 2.5 page paper. Easy A :)
Although her class was fully asynchronous, you could tell she genuinely enjoys sociology and wants to share her passion with her students. She's very understanding/empathetic when it comes to conflicts; don't be afraid to communicate with her if you're having trouble or need more time. Her assigned readings/vids were truly interesting and helpful!
Super easy class, 1 assignment per week which was usually a discussion board or quiz and they are both pretty easy. Final was a 3-4 page paper. Although the class is a full term class, it finished a month early. Highly recommend, professor is super nice and accommodating.
You can really tell Rachael cares a lot about the wellbeing of her students. She encourages really interesting deep conversations in class. She doesn't give many assignments, mostly short quizzes, discussion posts, and a few open-ended writing assignments. She offers lots of resources for you to learn more about the subjects if you want.
Ms. Rachael is such a caring professor who gives very little assignments. She emphasizes conversations instead of traditional lecture strategies. Through no fault of her own, many classes were canceled throughout the semester, so I feel like I did not get to learn as much as I hoped to. Either way, she's a great professor!
One of the most kind professors, and so easy to work with. Class was 5 Quizzes, 3 Tests, and a Final paper (3-4 pages). Occasional Discussion posts (3). The work can be kind of tedious, but takes no effort. If you need to take this class, take Dr. Patterson.
This prof is certainly a little eccentric, but you can tell she really cares abt her students and what she's teaching. She's sweet and does really value participation/speaking up, but she won't fault you if you don't. Work is a little tedious and does require some studying, but just read the textbook and you'll ace it.
Such a funny character. If you're looking for a professor who is organized and goes deep into statistics, she may not be the one, but you'll still learn a lot. Class is canceled often and typically day of or the night before, but class discussions are engaging. Assignments are accessible and modified to each persons interests
Rachel is by far one of the best professors I've had at UNCG so far. She is very passionate about what she teaches, cares deeply about her students, and give fantastic feedback on assignments. Lots of class discussions and they are engaging. She encourages participation, but doesn't push you to do so if you don't want to.
She's really nice and carefree, too laidback for my liking. Her lectures feel kinda useless but if you're into talking about deviance then she's your kind of person. Few assignments, she's very flexible. Take her if you need a soc credit :)
