Professor Howes is a great professor. She's extremely passionate about Middle Eastern History and explains everything very clearly. Her class wasn't hard either. It is a lot of reading, but that should be expected from a history class. You do have to do the work to get an A and do well on the midterms. I definitely learned a lot from her class.

Being a freshman, this class was a bit tough. She assigned SO much reading& homework. At some point the students either got used to it or simply stopped reading. Additionally, you have 3 papers assigned, but can chose to do 2/3. There are 2 midterms which are easy if u memorize dates, terms & locations. The final is the same as midterm.

Dr. Howes is an amazing professor that genuinely cares for the success of all of her students. I was in her 497 class, and I wouldn't have been able to receive an A in the class if it weren't for her support. She was there for every step of the writing process and constantly kept herself open for questions and any assistance that we required.

Took this class my junior year because it was a low level course and I just needed to fulfill one last requirement. WORST DECISION, she assigns way too many readings for students that aren't history majors. You read one book weekly and take a test on it, the lectures are unnecessary and you don't really need to attend. She's a nice person, but no.

Dr. Howes is an expert in Middle Eastern history. She cares for all her students and makes every effort to help. Her courses are heavily based on reading and discussion. Read and give meaningful responses during discussion and you will have no problem in her class! Expect 3-5 papers along with discussion leads for specific reading.

It was a good class overall, but she is a teacher that doesn't understand that her class isnt the only class her students are taking. She is very heavy on reading! Her explanation is thats how she was taught so thats how she will teach. If you dont like reading one book a week then dont take her class. She was fun during discussion though.

Worst history course I've ever taken. And this is coming from a history major. I never thought I could hate a history course but boy was I proven wrong. Insane amount of different books from terrible and difficult sources. Group projects galore, and assigns readings as if no one has a job or any other classes. Avoid this professor at all costs

If you want to take quizzes before you even had lecture, then go ahead. If you want to have map quizzes on which it is practically impossible to tell which is which, then go ahead. If you want to study history backwards, then go ahead. Seriously, worst class with the worst lecturer ever.

TERRIBLE Teacher! Assigns a reading that's at least a couple hundred pages every other day. Unless you like reading DO NOT take this course. She only grades the quizzes which aren't even about the reading but about the lectures, and even at that, it has nothing to do with anything. DO NOT GET HER AS A TEACHER!

If you take any of her classes, especially during the pandemic, be prepared to have a lot of needed readings. No lectures and all readings have discussions. So if you're a terrible reader like I am (I cannot visualize at all), you're gonna have a bad time. Quizzes are vague and always have essays, map sections are bad. Try to find another professor

Her class requires a lot of reading, so I won't recommend anyone to take this class who isn't majoring in history. The quizzes consist of a map where you have to identify each location and you have a writing part where you must answer 3-8 essay questions briefly. One paper. She basically gives you what will be exactly on the final, really helpful.

One class a week is dedicated to the history of the time you're learning about and the other class is dedicated to the readings assigned. Though the discussions on the readings are lead by students which is very hit or miss. The tests have a map portion and reading portion and the reading is random from the 4 readings you're doing in that unit.

Professor Howes was great! Lots of discussions and quizzes but if you really pay attention you'll be fine. Plus she allows you to use notes on the quizzes. Participation really matters, if you don't participate in class you can share your thoughts in an online discussion on the class canvas to get some points.

Lots of primary sources to grit your teeth through. Reading is the best way to know what is going on in the class as lectures and discussions are spotty and disorganized. Grading is based on quizzes, group discussion, participation and a final. Not the class for people without lots of available study time or who don't like reading.

She is an alright professor she teaches well & the class is chalked to her helping you write the final paper for the class with many of the assignments based on trying to improve your final thesis. Gives really good feedback only one issue it can unclear in my opinion I tried to implement them but always got the same feedback even though I fix it.
