Good teacher, hard marker. VERY hard to get an A.
very nice. but boring.
Very hard marker... She's very boring!
Oh god, where to start. Let's say I've had much better eng. teachers
Worst english teacher I've ever had.
extremely boring.zzz
nice person, but boring and extremely hard marker for intro. level english.

so hard....don't take her!!! such a hard marker..even ur essay is all right..she can still pick something out of it!
She's a really hard marker...kinda like no matter how hard you work, it's still not good enough. Not kind to skippers, but if she sees that you're trying hard, you'd get a better grade. Not always all there, if ya know what I mean.
do not take hers!!! her course is very boring! and it is super hard to get a good mark!!!
tough marker, though a good teacher
She is a TOUGH marker, true...but you will LEARN in her class. I busted my butt and got an A on 1st paper and A+ on 2nd, still only an A for final mark (!). She did not mark my 2nd paper :)
She is a fair marker and explains things clearly... Kinda helpful too though her class is a total bore!!! You'll learn a lot in her class though. Good teacher but too monotonous
Hard marker. Wierd and boring. Needs some people skills. Ask for help and you'll get the brush off and a recomendation to go to the writing center. She takes attendance so you have to go to class. Course package readings are usually good.
Very good teacher. I have learned a lot in her class.
This professor is worst one yet. Not fair on the gradings. Worked very hard to get a mark out of her. Very fussy. Don't ever want to take any of her classes again as long as I am at Langara.
Rachel combines brilliance with superb people skills and a good sense of humour. Hard-working. She has so much to offer if you are willing to learn!
Don't ever take her!She marks soooo hard!I spent 4 hrs on an essay that's to be done @ home & i failed it! & during an in-class essay(which i only have 1 hour to write it)& still, i got a F. that means..no matter how much time you put in,u will still fail
To anyone that is planning to take her... DON'T TAKE HER!!! she's such a hard marker!! she's nice and all, but she's tough!! and she expect us to write in the style that she likes it to be in. I regret taking her so much!!
She was very nice, and willing to go over my papers with me to discuss how they can be improved. She is a tough marker, but I learned a lot in her class, and I ended up improving by every paper I handed in.
It's a basic intro class, but she makes it interesting. If you take the time to do all you assignments, and had them in on time you will do well.
very tough marker, if she thinks u are not good enough, u can never change her mind, never! don't take her class if u don't want to kill ur GPA!!
She was an OK teacher but is a hard marker. She makes you take a lot of notes and read long, boring short stories. She likes people who do good in the class but not the people who don't, this influences her marking. Make your first inpression a good one.
sorry no offense, but to those who gave bad ratings, your grammar and blatant laziness is a direct explanation for your low marks. 4 hours for a take home essay? no wonder you failed, good luck serving up fries at mickey D's
She's fairly dull. She takes interest to students who have bright comments and looks down to those who don't. Her marking is on average, but maybe on the harder side. If you do plan to take Mines, be sure to have good writing. Cuz she expects a lot.
Her class isn't much fun. She sometimes repeats the material she already tought, which makes her class even more boring. Her marking is harsh. She sets high expectations for essays. She's ok to take if you have pretty damn good writing skills, otherwise I would sugest to go with someone else.
All I can say is that Rachel is a caring prof. She is very knowledgeable, and taught me a lot.Her marking is only difficult if you don't know what you are doing in the course.Come prepared for class and you will do just fine.Would recommend her class.Good Luck!!!
Generally, teachers with phd's have been the lamest at teaching IMHO. Rachel was kinda boring, and not the best communicator. Linguistics was hard, but that's another issue. Her marking wasn't that tough IMO.
I thought her class was easy to begin with because i got a descent mark on a first essay which didn't count for marks. But then later on in the course there would be 2 inclass essays. They were killers, barely pass. Attendence is very important if u want to get full marks for participation.
Don't take her! The course is pretty easy and you can do well until the research paper. Your mark on the research paper will be nothing you have ever expected. She is a cruel marker when it came down to the paper.
Do not take her class, if you are an English as second Language student. She is tough.
Don't miss class and don't interupt. If you read the short stories, which are mostly entertaining, you should do fine. You definatley have to do your work though. My worst mark was from her class.
She's hot!
I thought Dr. Mines to be a good teacher. She's very nice and funny, she can be very cute when she jokes. I actually enjoyed her class, except for the marking. But i don't think she will fail you for no reason. You just have to try hard to be good from the beginning. She's not the worst marker!!

Show up for ALL classes. She was taking off 1% percent for being absent and 1/2% for being late. So unless you have valid excuses, make sure you are in class !!!
she is the worst!!!she seems nice at the beginning but actually she is not! she tries too hard to be funny but she doesnt have any sense of humor. if u ask her for help she will make u feel like a fool! she didnt give back my term paper before the withdraw due date!! on purpose!!her lecture is soooooo soooooo boring. dont ever take her.
she marks kinda hard on essays

Re below: Term papers were handed back on Nov 28. The deadline for withdrawals was Nov 30. If you got your paper back late, you were either absent on Nov 28 or you handed your paper in late. Whose fault is that?
One of the most boring person I have ever met; very monotonous. First of all, she thinks she's really funny or something, which she is not. Then she's really picky about littles things that will screw over your GPA. I've had higher level English teachers that wouldn't throw a tantrum over those details. Not a good teacher for 1st year English.
At first, I didn't like Rachel. After a while, though, she grows on you (not in a bad way). She isn't a hard marker; those who complain just can't write well. She's funny in her own little way. Rachel really lays everything out for her students and makes it easy for them.
The worst teacher ever. If she likes you, you get a good grade. If not, good luck! Absolute garbage teaching quality, what should be very easy was ridiculously hard because she's a mess. Forgets due dates all the time! Wish I knew how horrid she was before wasting my money on that witch!
A nice teacher, but easily distracted by inconsiderate students.
Whether there is a reason or not, Rachel finds reasons to give a lower grade. She can be very negative at times. I really can?t recall much of what I learned from her. I?m glad to see that there are people that like her cause I can tell that she is trying hard to fit in.
I would never take another class that she is teaching. She doesn't mark fair. She stated that a 2nd year class average should be approximately c+. To me this means she is marking your work based on her belief about what the class average should be rather than what your work is worth. My friend was one her favourites, and she got a high grade all
Rachel is a very good teacher who marks fairly. If you improve on what she asks of, then your grade will reflect it. She explains the course clearly, and is always willing to help during her office hours. This was my first English class from high-school, and by far she was the best English teacher I have ever had.
The class was TOUGH!! But I think that's the nature of the content. Sometimes I felt like Rachel forgot just how much work this material is the first time you encounter it and she would go too quickly through some important concepts, but she is very approachable and genuinely concerned with having students learn. Would take another course with her.
Shes deaf in one ear, is afraid of public speaking, but yet she's teaching a COMMUNICATIONS class. If I could get a refund for the hours of my life where I have listened to her muttered on about absolulty nothing, i'd be first in line. In her defense, the material in this course is pointless.
I did better than I expected in her class. I don't know if it was because the textbook we used in class was helpful or she was good but my grammar has definitely improved. Those people who are complaining about her probably didn't go to class that often or never ask any questions when they don't understand.
Run, run and never come back!
Class is such a waste of time. She assigns a chapter, then just repeats the chapter to you next class. Easy as hell, though, once you know what she wants.
uh..terrible jokes... boring boring wana sleep
Teachers are not professional entertainers. You want entertainment, go watch TV. You wanna learn, pay attention in class and read the textbook. You don't want to be in class ... quit. Simple! And ... you're probably not that funny yourself.
Dr. Mines is a great teacher. She gives clear lectures and is very fair in her marking. I really enjoyed coming to class. I think she teaches above and beyond and looks at her teaching from what a student needs to know versus what she may 'want' to teach. She's a very helpful teacher!! I wish she taught 1129 or 1130 'cause I love her teaching style
She doesn't tolerate "interruptions" (read: questions) in her lectures and is easily flustered. Reading expectations are severe. She seeks very specific answers on tests and docks marks for guesses. Her class polluted my near-perfect GPA. For Langara students into linguistics: take Sarah Bowers' class or skip it 'til you're at UBC/SFU.
Good prof , clear, simple and easy,
A complete waste of time and extremely boring. She's nice but not funny. hard marker
Rachel is a very knowledgeable prof, but is inexplicably boring. She gets flustered by questions or anything that interrupts her lecture and instead of answering will just say "we have to get through this first." The course would be better if she didn't teach it. If you can avoid her, it'd be wise.
Terrible prof. Do NOT take her. I had swine flu and gave her the needed documentation, and she called me a liar. Who does that? Takes 1% off for missing classes - and is a brutal marker. Good luck on your essay. Don't bother asking questions, she will just tell you to go to the Writing Centre. She should not be a teacher.
Rachel is a good prof. She tries her best, but she can be difficult to reach if you have questions on the weekend. She does play favs and you are expected to attend class. She is SUPER anal in what she is looking for, but it is an english class. Not my fav, easier to learn from a prof who enjoys their job than those who dont. Cant tell if she does
Her lectures are boring, but her tests are not too hard. She makes sure that you read what she has assigned by quizzing you on them. She is nice, but gets sort of flustered when she can't answer a question. She might stuff too many concepts in one hour, to the point that it may become confusing. She tries to be funny. But she's not.
Dr. Rachel is nice. She's a good prof. She's respecful and approchable: won't eat you alive like other Eng prof. I say it's not mandatory to come to class because she doesn't make a big fuss about it, but don't over do it! She's an easy and fair marker. She's super cute and tries to be funny. Her class could be a lil boring, but what class isn't.
She's a great teacher and an easy marker.
Not a hard marker if you're at all prepared for post secondary. Rachel is cute and tries her best, she's accommodating without being a pushover. I like the chosen stories. For 1127, skip buying Fit to Print, didn't use it at all.
She makes everything clear, so she is slow. She is not an easy marker, but it's good because that way you actually improve! Overall her class is worth taking.
Terrible prof. She is not helpful to students for learning English at all. Her classes are boring. Although classes are not too hard, you can learn nothing!!! Avoid her if you wanna improve your English effectively.
She is a fair marker and a kind person. Worth taking. English is not my first language and she makes the course really easy too understand. I love studying english because of her even though my grade is quite low.
I really enjoy her class. She speaks really slow and makes everything clear. She helps me a lot in the research paper. I really appreciated her help. I will definitely take her course again.
Dr Mines is the best! Love her and her class.
Rachel is a good prof. Attendance is graded, and she quizzes on readings. Fit To Print wasn't needed. Her marking is fair, although tough. She allows students to edit most assignments and resubmit for a higher grade. She can be a little boring, and she doesn't listen but assumes what students are trying to communicate. Overall good prof.
One of my favourite teacher at Langara, highly recommend!
I am taking English 1129 with another prof and I just miss her so much. She is very clear and helpful. Take her class.
Rachel is a fantastic prof. I was concerned going into the class after reading the reviews for her Eng1135 class saying that she is boring and doesn't accept questions. If that was the case before, it has changed. It is a linguistics course. Not English, not History. It is hard, and you have to spend a lot of time outside class to get a good grade.
Rachel is a great teacher who helps you when you ask for it, she's friendly and gives good feedback. She explains things very throughly- maybe too throughly. She picks interesting topics and short stories to read for assignments.
Rachel is a very good instructor and is very nice. Her lectures are very boring and you can get away with skipping class. She marks assignments very clearly and always gives you opportunities for improvement.
She would not consider your hard work if you have poor grammar. She would give you an F for any assignments that has bad grammar. Does not matter if you turn in all assignments.
Rachel is really nice and understanding, but very particular about how she likes things done. Follow her instructions on everything EXACTLY how she likes it or you will fail the assignment. She goes over simple things in such depth that it becomes very boring.
Dr. Mines is a wonderful professor and you will learn a lot during her lectures. They will be boring so bring your laptop and sit in the back row so you can distract yourself a bit during her very dry lectures.
I enjoyed her class
She's super nice, knows her stuff, and has really interesting lectures. Subject matter is TOUGH and there's a ton of reading you have to do outside the class; not an easy credit at all. You can tell she really cares about what she's teaching.
Very nice teacher! I did not buy the Fit to Print text that was required just make sure to review her p.p before the grammar quizes. When doing assignments make sure to follow the format EXACTLY or you will not get the marks. She also allows you to rewrite your assignments to get .5 a mark higher (ie 7.5 to 8) She also records attendance each class
Rachel is a great teacher! I enjoyed her classes very much and the short stories she picked. Every lecture was very clear and to the point. However, the course is not easy and requires time and effort. Be prepared to read and take notes. I will not recommend this course to students struggling with English as their second or third language.
Is harsh on grammar. Little mistakes cost me marks so you have to be very very disciplined with revision and structure of the essay and hand-written midterm but all other assignments you can revise and get up to .5 marks extra. Lectures are boring and long but useful if you can pay attention. Work hard and revise and you can get a good grade.
Rachel is friendly and approachable. Sometimes the lectures could be kind of boring, but she tries to keep things light. She takes attendance every class. There are reading comprehensive quizzes, but they are super easy. This was my first time back in college after a 16 year absence, and I got an A-.
Tough grader, and wrote opinionated comments about my topic all over the paper, rather than focus on how it was written. Classes are dull and leave much to be desired.
This should have been a basic class but it was really hard to get through. I only got a decent grade because another prof gave me good essay feedback that I was able to apply. Rachel removes marks for every missed citation and every mistake in the bibliography.
BEWARE! Worst English course I've taken. Her course content is irrelevant and she teaches you nothing to do with writing. She is also very bias about topics which made it hard to get a good grade because the class was always wrong. She put a style of writing on the exam she never taught. I have considered appealing my grade due to unfair testing.
Rachel makes English feel like a class that's impossible to complete. In one lecture, she talked for one hour about past tense/present tense. Her lectures made me want to chop my own ears off. Mines is a "my way or the highway" kind of teacher. If you care about yourself and your willingness to learn, please don't take her class.
