I have taken 2 of her classes, and they are definitely not easy. No "homework" but mostly reading and some writing assignments that are only difficult if history isn't your thing, like me. I managed a B in the last class, but just barely. Grades on a curve, which is always helpful. She is very intellectually intimidating but very helpful when asked
Expect no hw besides reading out of the textbook, most of the readings are extremely long. She bases her quizzes and texts off of the book yet her lectures aren't close to the book at all.
Petrocelli is crystal-clear about what she expects, well-organized, and challenges students to actually think. I have not had to memorize any trivial crap. For the first time I'm enjoying a history class. She's flexible/made adjustments with assignments so we can succeed. Her assigned readings and time in class for analysis are always interesting.
I took her in the fall of 2016. I learned a lot from her. The midterm and test are based from the information in the book and they are on the harder side. She does let you use the book for the tests. She does lecture from power points but it is not required for you to take notes. There is one essay which she grades fairly easy.
For an introductory class purely for general education credit, I have to say try someone else. If you are a history major and are very passionate with your major then she might be perfect for you. The class overall felt much more rigorous than an introductory course. The tests are based solely on readings, but the paper and presentation were not.
She really knows her stuff. She puts a ton of reading on the syllabus but doesn't make you do it all. I only read about half of it. She gives a bunch of extra credit. It was pretty easy to get an A.
History can be a boring class but with this professor it's not. She actually made me like history more and made it even funny sometimes. The work load is up and down but she tells you exactly what to do before each one so it wasn't hard to get through and there's all kinds of extra credit which really helped.
She is a great professor, a little intense, but that's what makes you learn. She's very knowledgable and very kind. Do the reading and listen to her feedback on writing assignments. Use office hours! She will help you with your writing assignments.
Her midterm and final are based on the books and they are more on the difficult side. She does do PowerPoints (none of the info is on the tests) but she doesn't require you to take notes. There is one essay which she grades quite fairly. You definitely have to work to get an A or a B.
Honestly took this class during the fall, it was amazing, i definitely am not a history fan but the way she described the events were really interesting,i never wanted to MISS a class, she really wants the students to suceed. Open books and notes for all the test, and she is very descriptive on whats on it. Loved her, would take again.
Not an easy A. Her PPT's are very limited. There's a lot of reading in order to do timed writing assignments as well as discussion board. Midterm and final exams were timed essays. Extremely critical of writing assignments, but give very little feedback. It's history, not an English class, so I don't agree with the ridiculous amount of writing.
She comes off as a tough professor but shes really not that bad. As long as you follow what she asks for you should get a good grade. Her class is fairly easy and laid back.
I took honors history with Professor Petrocelli, and she was not a great teacher at all. You teach yourself the entire course and she is rude and cocky. Its clear that she thinks very highly of herself (for no reason) and is not understanding nor very helpful when asking questions about assignments/tests. Do NOT take this teacher.
Took Hist 101 online with Petrocelli and I enjoyed it. 8 weeks and she opens the whole 8 weeks which is nice to work ahead. Lots of reading as there is really no lecture but the 2 essays, some quizzes, 2 responses are based on the reading and was easy to complete just by reading. No problems. I suggest Rachel for Hist online!
I wish I took this professor sooner because history is really interesting with her and I feel like I learned so much. She gave me lots of input on my work before I turned it in and that helped make it easier to get a good grade on the essay especially. Extra credit helpful too.
Easy essay test, she lets you use the book! You have to buy 3 book total! read 2 chapters per week, then, read the second book for the midterm and the the last book for the final! Besides a analytical paper quiet difficult! I spend I week doing it and got a B on it . She's fast talker, I'm ESL student, so I never understood a word!
if you sing up for her 7 am class, then, wake up early and be on time, cause otherwise she will ask you in front of everyone to get up earlier ! haha which is fine but yeah overall she's fine!
Great online course, there is a lot of reading but if you do the work its an easy A.
took during intercession and it wasn't too bad. two discussion boards that are opinion based. No homework, only quizzes every two chapters. Midterm and final are 3 hour timed essays so make sure you buy the book!! She gives you detailed powerpoints and they're super helpful!
This professor is terrible at teaching online courses. She is totally unclear on the criteria, and gives us very short word count limits, but expects you to go into immense detail in the short essays. Like, if you want detail, give us a word count above 600. I've never received a bad grade in history before until this class. Avoid at ALL costs!
If you do the reading then the essays should be easy to answer. She gives a lot of feedback on it too. Easy A if you read. She is a fair grader
This 4-week online course had 2 quizzes every week that incorporated 2 chapters each. When I didn't know a quiz question, quizlet helped me out. The midterm and final are written essays and you have to use the book and paraphrase everything. I tried my best, but winged it at the same time and got B+'s. I got an A in class cuz it depends on quizzes
Honestly the worst college course I have taken. She runs this class like you are training to be a history major when in reality its for credit. Grades very tough on everything you do, but good feedback. She refers to herself as an expert and Dr which already kind of tells you what kind of teacher she is. Do not take unless you have to.
I took this class thinking that it would be an easy A, but it was not. I took her 4 week online class. She makes us read the whole textbook within that time which is a ridiculous amount of reading. You have to read to know how to do the midterm and final. She gave me such low and did not even really thoroughly explain what I did wrong. DO NOT TAKE
Easy A, gives a bunch of quizzes and some essay exams. But she opens the whole class at one time so you can just get through it fast. You need the book, but I just found the chapters online.
I believe we should all be given second chances because we are bound to make some mistakes along the way. I missed one assignment and it dropped me from a 93% to a 82%. I miss read when it was due, and got penalized for it. If I was a professor I would try and help my students to succeed, and give them a chance if they only missed one assignment.
I took her summer class and its definitely fast but easy if you have the book. Finished the final early and got my grade half an hour later. She grades the essays harder than the discussions and you cant miss anything.
She was okay. Didn't seem like she wanted to get to know the students. Graded very heavy on quizzes and essay exams. For the essays she never gave a prompt so you could not prepare for them. I somehow ended up with an A but I really had to work or it. If you have anxiety or get stressed out from school I would not recommend taking her course.
I took her course over intercession, and I would not recommend doing that. In her first email she sent the wrong information for the book leading to me receiving the wrong one and having to scramble for the right one. The exams are strictly based off of the reading but typically are still difficult even with good knowledge of the content.
I took her intersession class and honestly its all tests about the book. The discussions are just basically essays too. She grades thing fast so I could finish this class and focus on my other final. Recommend if you need a class that isn't a hassle.
cant even put into words how insane her expectations are..... for a 100 level class....... I felt like I was being punkd. please for the love of all things holy stay away from any class this professor teaches.
BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not waste your time. She doesnt provide rubrics for anything. Her grading makes no sense. For a 100 course, the work load is unbelievable. She is the worst Professor I have ever had. Just take a different course, she shouldnt even be teaching. Do yourself a favor and take any other course.
This was a hard class just because she makes you use the book and all the sources she gives you and doesn't budge from what she puts in her directions which are really long. My first essay score was bad but she tells you what to change for the next one. Quizzes kept my grade up too. The recorded lectures actually really help so listen to them.
Unclear grading criteria. Has a page dedicated to herself on canvas. Covers works of fiction in a history class. Assigns unreasonable amounts of reading. Test questions are based on random details that you wouldn't even think to take notes on. Too many discussion boards which require a detrimentally specific word count. Take a different professor.
Worst professor Ive ever had. I spent 6 hours on an essay and she gave me a D. She didnt reach us anything it was all out of a book and we just self-taught. Her expectations were higher than any other prof I have ever had. It became not about the material and just about her.
Dr. Petrocelli is one of the best professors I've had. It's a real college class. She makes it about places like Africa and Middle East that you don't get to learn about in other history classes. You read the whole book and long stuff on Canvas so be ready. The essays are a task. But her feedback is so useful and defintely helped me get an A.
This class was about 90% reading, with a 500 page textbook. All quizzes and the 2 essays were based on it. Essays must be done in one day, and take multiple hours. Grading was questionable as well, avoid her if possible.
The biggest issue with her is if you dont like to read. Honestly I read 20 pages every day so I was fine. Essays are intense and I spent 5 hours on one. But you definitely learn more about history. she gets back to you right away and is helpful. I had a zoom meeting with her for an hour and it definitely helped.
Serious professor, very hard. Take if you really like history and want to feel like you're at a big university and not community college. Otherwise avoid.
She gives you a ton of chapters to read and online articles wasting hours of your time just for 3 irrevalent questions that do not help with an education. STAY AWAY FROM HER SHE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT EDUCATION ONLY HER CHECK
This is my third class with Dr. P and I would take more if I weren't transferring soon. She puts a lot of effort into doing reminders and announcements; sometimes with a few in one day. The feedback is always so helpful and I definitely benefited from it. FYI she takes the discussions seriously almost like essays so that's basically what they are.
Listen to her announcements!! She makes it so easy, tells you every single thing you have to do. Also good about emailing. You can tell when you go do the discussions who is getting a good grade and who isn't because its like there's half the people who did what she said to and the other half of people just winging it (not a good idea with her)..
Horrible professor. Im literally a history major and Ive NEVER received a bad grade in history. Her assignments dont even make sense to what were learning, we just read the text book and then she has us do flipgrids with random questions. Maybe teaching shouldnt be her profession because she literally doesnt care about her students.
Great professor! She really cares about making the course something you'll learn from, doesn't just put youtube videos. Her lectures are so interesting. I wasn't expecting to learn so much especially since I really never loved history but I did. The essays can be tough and to say she wants you to cite is an understatement so they take a while.
She has created her own way of citing and writing essays that makes absolutely zero sense. I showed my English teacher her directions and he was confused by what she was asking. Her instructions are incredibly unclear. Shes one of those teachers her tries to catch you she will look for tiny mistakes and then take 50% off an assignment.
Best class I've taken but not the easiest. I really appreciated how she made the instructions for essays basically a list of things we needed to do because sometimes professors don't give you anything and you have to guess. Lectures are good but she just wants you to read - luckily the readings are interesting. Discussions help your grade a lot!
I appreciate this prof because of how everything is explained up front. It is not hard to get a A (actually says if you do this you'll score like this). Also grades everything right away so you know where you stand. Personally I wanted to learn more about Europe but she wants you to write on other places, still, a good choice for a history class.
Mrs. Petrocelli is a good teacher. The class is asynchronous and online so I did not to get meet her. But she replies to emails fast, and she is supportive and helpful. Take her if you wanna do history during summer/intersession!
I really liked her. Was online, but you could work ahead and she graded stuff if you turned it in early sooner. Make sure to read her instructions for every assignment, she lists some things she wants you to do and I got a good grade on every discussion/essay but triple-checked her "rubric." She knows her stuff and you learn to cite well.
I took teacher Rachel Petroceli for 8 weeks course, read her syllabus carefully, and don't forget to quote because it would deduct too many points. DB needs to be well structured; otherwise, she will deduct too many points. The good news is that she grades immediately. The final test is just two questions about the book. You will need a book. Ques
Rachel Petrocelli is an ineffective teacher. I knew it was going to be bad when she insisted on being called "Doctor". Really says something about her ego. The work she gives is mostly discussions with unclear grading criteria and vague instructions. Grades harsh. Not allowed to use outside sources. Strict deadlines.
I needed a class to finish up GEs and am so glad I took her because it couldn't have been easier. Dr Petrocelli knows exactly what she's doing when it comes to online - gives all the directions for what to do and says how to get an A on each thing up front. Online book. Got thru the course no problem and she grades right away. Take her.
So helpful and responsive! Answered every email I sent a few minutes later. Also Prof Petrocelli gives grades right away unlike some other professors who wait until the end of the class and you have no idea what grade you're getting. You have to do what she says to get a good grade but it's not hard since she is very clear - easy A.
Take her. Grading is clear and you need to follow requirements to a tea and double check. No timed tests and can use online textbook. Took about 2-3 hour exams- theyre written- easy prompts, just use analysis. 4 discussions- mostly opinionated and easy. One of the easiest classes. No homework besides discussions. Highly recommend. Fast grader.
Great professor that knows I'm not working on their class all the time which is what I was looking for to get this requirement done. Everything laid out clear without extra pointless work. Discussions so easy you can can almost write anything as long as you put in citations like she wants. Grades super fast, also emails back right away. Take her.
I've taken two of Prof Petrocelli's classes (online asynchronous) and they were exactly the same except on different subjects so it's easy to get a high grade. I actually got 100% in the second class because I learned her system since she tells you what to do. Will take a third. Beware - makes you cite but online book easy to term search. Take her.
HIST102 with Dr. Petrocelli is hard if you didn't do exactly what she wants but after one DB I realized it so I did the course to her rules and got As on almost everything. Modules are interesting, lots of non-West topics. Excellent (long!) audio lectures are common and you can tell she's smart, knows her stuff. But you have to read and cite a lot.
Took History 101 and 102 with Prof. Petrocelli and she was great! I especially love how she responds to canvas messages quickly and grades quickly. Be prepared for a lot of reading and writing in this class. To do well, make sure to answer her prompt fully in discussions and essay exams, have a focused thesis, and give global examples.
I took this 4 week course and I have to say it was a lot of reading. She gives you the readings for each week and you need to have read them to pass the midterm and final. The discussions are easy points and the textbook is a pdf. Read the syllabus and assignment rules very clearly or you will not pass. No prompt beforehand for essays. Tough class.
This professor is not understanding at all. Graded very harshly for minor late work. After having an A the entire semester, she felt very comfortable almost failing me for one assignment.
Dr Rachel Petrocelli is a great professor for world history. She gives a lot of comments when she gives you your grade, it makes so much difference because you know exactly what to do next time. Also I've had professors who don't grade until the end of the semester but she gives things back right away, huge plus. Very organized and professional.
I tried my absolute best. I did every single assignment on time. I did everything I could. I don't know how she failed me so hard to give me a 59 percent, but she did. Maybe I'm just bad or her class is just genuinely impossible.
I took the 2023 Intersession course, and I will just say this: Be ready to read. You will cover multiple chapters with each week, and it is critical that you take notes with page numbers. Aside from this, the professor is somewhat strict with her citation but gives good and quick feedback with each paper your write. Just stay on top of your work.
Very strict grader and lots of reading. Definitely passionate about history but for the level of college and class she is way harder than it ever should be.
This professor only cares about citations but I figured that out.Since everything's online term searching was super easy. I don't even think she was reading my essays. I plugged citations in after almost every sentence without even really reading all the homework she gives (which is a lot but no one probably is reading most of it) and got As.
Took Dr. Petrocelli's HIST 121 class over the summer online, it was a lot of reading but 100% doable if you keep track of time. I would've gotten a better grade if I hadn't used an outside source on the midterm so don't get scared off by my mistake. As long as you follow the instructions and read/watch all of the materials, this class is a doozy.
Petrocelli's 102 class is a short class in the summer. The assignments include discussion posts which arent too bad but the midterm and final are where it gets tough. You do not get a prompt before starting the final but once you begin, you do. You must finish the final in the session you began it. It's a doable course but be ready to spend hours.
While she does have rigid and precise grading criteria, she will find something wrong with your assignment, even if you are following those rules. She has excellent audio lectures, but her other sources can be confusing for what she asks for in discussions. Overall, her summer class was difficult, but not impossible. Just wish she graded easier.
Definitely a tough class with LOTS of reading, but as long as you stay on top of the work, it's completely doable! I never spent more than 3 hours on a final, but even that's a lot of time to require in one sit-down period, especially when students taking an online class might have other obligations.
I took her class last semester and she refused to give me anything higher then a 7/10 and gave me a 50 on the essay just because I forgot one of the SIX papers I was supposed to cite off of. She makes you do 600 word discussion post (along with many other tedious assignments) every week and her grading system is actually terrible.
Worst professor. I should've listened to the other ratings.
Way too demanding for a 100-level course. The amount of reading she expects you to do is ridiculous, and the way she wants you to cite is very tedious and unnecessarily complicated. You could tell she's passionate about history, but her teaching style fails to translate that passion to her students, and instead makes this class a real headache.
There is no reason for her class to be as difficult as it is. She simply has ridiculous expectations. The required amount of reading is nothing short of absurd and she grades far too harshly. Strict on due dates and citing. If you enroll in one of her classes, you WILL regret it. Avoid.
Class is way too demanding. Her requests for citing is crazy and she grades so harshly. Avoid her class.
I heard from a few years ago she was good, which is why I signed up (and before this semester she had a 5/5 review on here). Her class is nothing like what people said about her before and she grades very harshly
She's very (overly) specific but so helpful. It doesn't make sense not to get a good grade in Prof Petrocelli's class because she just tells you what to do exactly. I sent her every discussion essay ahead of time for review and she told me changes to do, so I did and got A's. She has a LOT of rules but following them does the trick. It's foolproof.
Insanely tough grader, doesn't allow extra credit, doesn't allow late work etc. For those taking online classes because you work or have other things going on, I'd avoid picking Petrocelli. Midterms and finals suck because you don't know the prompt until you open it so you don't even know what to study.
Dr P is very passionate about history and you can tell she wants others to be there with her and so it makes the class a major commitment. Personally I learned a lot esp about religions. While it was difficult it definitely was clear and consistent. Her essay and DB post criteria are predictable after only doing one or two. Intense but good class.
Busy work heavy. Discussion posts every week with citations at least 450 words. Makes you use a ton of different sources. She failed me by one percent and did not respond to my email asking about it.
Petrocelli's lectures are so good and her knowledge of history (esp Africa) is impressive but the class just isn't what most would call easy. There's some corners you can cut but it's still a ton of reading and long discussions. I didn't find it too hard because her system is clear and ended up enjoying it more than I thought. Great prof.
do not take her class. ever. took 10 points off a discussion post for using a quote that was "too long." the quote was 2 sentences. bye.
Grading is hard and sources are not able to focus the main point
Too demanding on what she asks for, too little time to complete the assignments. Has no regard for life outside of class and does not respond to emails. Do not take unless you have unlimited time
Do not take !!!! bad teacher, does not make prompts very clear and blames you for not understanding. also doesnt like opinion papers that veer from her opinion. dont take her unless its the only option. she only cares about citations and not the actual writing in a essay
I am actually surprised by the bad reviews for this professor since I came to write my positive on and figured people had the same experience as me. She is totally a what you see is what you get professor, no surprises, and it was one of the better classes I've had. I just did the assignments and got As. You have to do citations, she's obsessed.
Professor Petrocelli claims to be tough but really isn't and I got her class done a week before the end with basically perfect grades. She likes to nitpick citations (even down to where you put a period) but that's almost the only issue I had. she just seems to want people to write a lot and cite constantly so doing that much is easy..
Great professor who gives some of the most helpful instructions on the papers that I've come across in all my classes. The course is really focused on diversity which is something I noticed right away and it kept going throughout the units which is refreshing. Lots of reading but not hard to do and the papers are easy to pass.
The workload can be heavy depending on the length of the course you choose to take. However there are ways around it. You can do less of the work by just reading what you need to answer the questions. The professor definitely has a passion for her job, so if you are looking to learn a lot, this is a great course. If you arent, its still good enough
Professor's work is heavy reading if you're not into that. In an online course of hers be prepared to read a lot. Multiple articles and the chapters are long. Most of the time in each unit its only reading then one test which could drop your grade easily if you struggle reading. Essays are long too and is straight forward on how she want's it.
Does not teach anything at all, the entire class is just reading the textbook, then take the 5 question quiz that is worth almost all of your grade. There are no homework assignments to bring your grade up just one or two discussions, the rest are quizzes and tests. I would not choose to take her class unless it is your only option.
Respectfully the worst professor I have ever had in my life. They accused me of using AI multiple times and didn't respond to questions, comments, or concerns. Combs through responses to make sure there is no incorrect information. Don't take 101 with them.
Don't take it if you don't want your GPA to be ruined. The amount of reading is ridiculous. The tests are made up of words that you won't find in your notes or the book. Don't take it. And the good reviews there are fake. She gives you 35 or more pages between chapters and articles. and sometimes more. Petrocelli is the worst. Don't take it.
petrocelli was likely the worst teacher i've ever had, assigned an unbelievable amount of reading and lectures per week for a 101 class which is crazy do NOT take this class unless u want a low gpa
I was excited bc I love history, but I quickly learned that this class was going to be a nightmare. After asking very clear questions about timeframes, due dates, & grading, she gave me extremely vague & condescending answers. The whole class is a guessing game. She'll track your time you spend & drop you if you're not 'logged in enough'. AVOID HER
I'm only taking this class as an elective and because I enjoyed history until this class. She expects students to view the class as a full time job spending 32 hrs a week 8 hrs a day. As a full time student that already has a FULL TIME JOB there's enough on my plate. INSANE amount of time she expects to put in this class. STAY AWAY
Very test/quiz heavy but the questions come straight out of the textbook/module. Make sure to read the quiz descriptions before reading, it will tell you wether the quiz is from the textbook or the module readings. The professor is easy to reach out to, and is very understanding with any issues. However she is strict with her policies.
Not completely awful. Be ready to do a lot of reading. No 'homework' but the few discussions and quizzes make up a lot of your grade, so a low grade in any of them greatly impacts your overall grade. Discussion posts are expected to be around 500 words and formatted like a mini essay with proper citations. Replies around 150 words. 2 formal essays.
DO NOT take her class. You will regret it. I took her summer class and it was A LOT of busy work. You have to read and write extensively. Also, she's very strict about grading and overly suspicious of AI use. It's not worth stressing over.
I joined the class and saw the amount of work that she was giving for a 3-credit class. I took a deeper dive on here to see if maybe I was overthinking, but I was right. Dropped her class immediately. She expects you to read for at least 3 hours a day, which is insane. I do not recommend taking this class unless you want to be stressed out.
Avoid this professor unless it's your only option. Her class is overwhelming for just 3 units. You must record yourself writing full papers in 30 mins with no breaks or editing. She expects 3 hours of work daily and 1,200 words weekly just for discussion posts. Way too demanding for a typical college schedule PLEASE do yourself a favor and avoid
Horrible across the board, gave us extra credit for attending an online pro israel seminar which felt weird, avoid at all costs, I know there aren't many great options at SCC but I found her to be the worst of those options
Get ready to record yourself.
This teacher expects you to do jumping jacks while sitting down and more. At this point just offer in person classes because this is overdoing it. I DEEPLY REGRET not checking this website before registering.
Had to drop the class in the first 2 weeks she gave way to much homework to keep up with on top of my other classes. she was a hard grader and all the assignments had so many little details.
Easily one of the better professors I've had. I took her for an Africa studies class in Spring '25. Not an easy class and had a fair share of reading, but I came away feeling proud and satisfied with what new I had learned. She is a perfect mix and laidback and hard on students. Exactly as a professor should be, in my opinion. Fun.
Be prepared to do a LOT of reading. There is so much reading that doing it all is not only unrealistic but impossible. Only reading the textbook is an option, but it will screw you over for the quizzes. She'll make you watch documentaries, some almost 2 hours long, and then quiz you over a random fact mentioned in passing at the 50-minute mark.
I just graduated from CSUF and wanted to come back to rate all my memorable professors I had along the way, Rachel Petrocelli is not good at her job, the only class I every received lower than an A- in my college career was her HIST 101 class in community college...every assignment "didn't feel authentic"
