Professor Pollack is so great! I only took the class to help me pick up women (AH classes are stocked with them). But I ended up actually enjoying the class. She's also funny and attractive in an intelligent smart bread-winner take her home to your mother sort of way.
The best teacher in the school. I worked hard for my A, but it was totally worth it. She's so willing to help whether it is on exams or you just don't understand something. Took so much time to make sure her students did well. Made me wanna take art history even though I don't have time. THE BEST!Highly recommended. If you need a humanties take her.
Very very easy grader. Good teacher. Definitely worth taking any of her classes. She knows she's easy and she loves it. You have to study but not very hard and you will get the grade you deserve.
Love her, such a nice lady. She's young, funny, and her passion about her work is really evident. Lenient grader, and a generally fun, entertaining class.
Great teacher. Very friendly and passionate. I actually enjoyed going to class because her lectures/material was interesting. Easy grader too, but to get an A you should probably attend lecture.
The most wonderful woman on the planet. She makes life worth living.
The best professor ever. She is sooooooooo understanding. She helps you out when you need it. Just go to class and go to office hours.
I LOVE her. Not only is her class easy but she makes it so interesting. She's really understanding and is the sweetest woman in the world. Attendance is not a must but definitely helps, because all of the slides on the exam are in lecture. Take anything she teaches.
She was an amazing professor and really made the subject interesting, even though I hadn't heard of any of the art we learned about prior to taking this course. She's available all the time for help and only tests on what she lectures about (not everything in the book so you don't really even need to do all of the reading). I ended up with a 97!
I had never taken Art History before and found this course enjoyable. If you have a good memory and are willing to put in the time to memorize, this is the course for you. She really wants all of her students to do well. It is necessary to go to class and take notes. Overall, good course.
Energetic professor in a sometimes stagnant class, she made it easier to get through and I only fell asleep once, which is saying something the room is warm and dark!
she is really helpfull if you go to her!
Great prof.- go to class and study for the exams- she makes the subject matter interesting.
Professor Pollack was great. I had her for both AH 31 and 32. I learned so much about art history even though I didn't have that much of an interest in it before. It requires a lot of memorization, but as long as you do that you can get an A. I definitely recommend this class.
Took both surveys with her. She is so wonderful! Exams are easy, she tells you exactly what to study. Museum visits are fun. Easy A, but you still learn a lot. Really cares about her students.
Professor Pollack is really passionate about art. This combined with how fairly she grades makes this a really great class. As long as you study before the tests and memorize at least the title of the majority of the art she covers, you'll do fine.
The nicest and most sincere professor- she really wants you to do well. The class is really interesting, as are the optional field trips. If you cram the night before (or day of) you'll be fine for the exams. While the book is useful in clarifying material, you can get an A without opening it. Take this class!!
You can tell she cares a lot about the subject and her students, and she even leads optional trips to museums. The only thing was that the majority of the exams were based on pure memorization instead of actual interpretation and do NOT purchase the $150 book that she recommends because I never touched mine. Great professor overall though.
I'm absolutely in love with her. She is very passionate about the subject and makes it interesting. The tests are a bit hard but she's a very easy grader.
I hate art and class became somewhat interesting to me (I also took 32). The class is an easy A if you go to class and study hard for the 3 non-cumulative tests. No reason to buy the expensive textbook. Rachel is nice and sometimes funny, but the lectures can still be long.
Omg, I LOVE her. Rachel Pollack is quite possible my favorite teacher at GW, she is so passionate about her subject and she makes herself very available for students who want extra help or who are just interested in the subject. She's fantastic, honestly I can't say enough great things about her. Take anything she teaches!
Prof is a nice person, but the class is a joke. You learn absolutely nothing, which normally wouldn't both me at all, but the tests are just PURE memorization of useless facts that everyone other than an art history major WILL forget the next day. Don't buy the textbook and bring something to entertain yourself during lecture.
She is nice, clearly very intelligent and loves greek art, but you are resposible for memorizing SO MUCH information, way beyond the standard title, period, artist. You'll have to guess what you should write down in class, which doesnt help when it comes to the essay portion of tests. Also, she PACES! Not bad, just know what your getting into.
This class is so simple once you get past the memorization of note cards if you choose to make them. If you put in the work, you'll do very well since the tests are very simple. Go to class, if you don't, buy the book. She's everything you would want a teacher to be. Take this class, it will change your life.
this class is only good if you love pure memorization... the classes and textbook are useless. the only thing you need is the sheets that she hands out at the beginning of every class. if you hate memorizing dates and useless facts then this class is not for you
this class is pure memorization... if you love that then this is your class... if not then do not take this class.... all you need is the sheet she gives out at the beginning of class.
Professor Pollack is a good teacher. Her tests are on the boring side...but she herself is a doctorate student at another university so give her a break! And as a member of the housing staff she is a great trip coordinator. Her events are always so much fun!
I took her writing class on Dutch Art, and honestly think it was the best decision I made. She's a very easy grader and provides a lot of help in improving your papers before you hand them in. Also, she tells some of the funniest stories, and you take a weekly field trip to the National Gallery. Take this class!
Classes are boring, uninspiring. Does not take active interest in the class.AVOID HER CLASS AT ALL COSTS. SHE DOES NOT DESERVE TO TEACH. VERY INCONSIDERATE.
Took UW on Dutch Art with her and is the most amazing professor I've ever had! A super easy grader, very easy A, and she is so helpful with your writing and I have learned so much from her. She is really friendly and interesting and intelligent and very willing to help!
Great professor who loves what she teaches. The class is very straight forward and if you do the assignments with a decent amount of effort you will get an A. You will learn a lot and won't get the stress that comes with a lot of other UWs
Dutch Art at the National Gallery of Art is an amazing class! As a class you visit the gallery every week, which is incredible. She gives great feedback. My writing definitely improved. Decent amount of reading, but interesting. Honestly one of my favorite classes at GW.
The best UW. You go to the National Gallery of Art every Friday which is a great way to avoid the Vern and explore DC. She can be a somewhat tough grader, but as long as you listen to her feedback and submit more than one draft, you'll be fine. She's very understanding and always willing to help you pass the class.
I am an International student taking her class to fulfill my UW requirement. Apparently, my first language is not English and she understand that and tries to give me advices and grades me on a learning curve. She is really in to Art History made me appreciate Art so much more. **Don't take if you hate Art. It's gonna be boring as hell**
Professor Pollack's UW: Dutch Painting in the National Gallery class was amazing. She is so knowledgeable and respects what all of her students have to say. Even though it was a trek to the Vern, I never minded going because of the chill environment and fascinating discussions. Highly recommended!
Rachel Pollack provides a structured, safe, cultured learning environment for all her students and is genuinely interested in each of her student's projects, even doing a bit of research for you if you demonstrate that you are intentionally pursuing the material. My writing improved a great deal and I highly recommend her classes.
TAKE THIS UW. You will hear horror stories of UW's being GPA killers (4 credits, ton of writing that takes from other classes). Not Dutch Art. She offers amazing feedback, she's incredibly accessible, she wants to give you an A, and your writing will improve. UW that is both a guaranteed AA- and a solid prof? Easy decision- take it.
Dr. Pollack was an amazing professor. She is really inspiring and knowledgeable about art history. Your writing will improve and you will leave this class with a new appreciation for the arts. Dr. Pollack was always helpful and she made us laugh a lot. I wish I could take this class again!!!
Dr. Pollack was easily my favorite professor. If you are looking for an easy UW that is actually really interesting, take Dutch Art with her. She is knowledgeable and very approachable. If you keep up with readings and participate, you'll be completely fine. It's also a really cool experience to visit the National Art Gallery each week!
Rachel Pollack was the best teacher I had at GW my first semester! She really made the freshman writing class bearable and interesting. I had no knowledge of Dutch art going in but her zeal for Dutch art made me want to take an AH class . From talking to peers, this seemed to be of the best UW teachers and classes at GW.
Really caring professor. When reviewing project proposals, she'll recommend sources and is very clear as to what is expected. Framing the Visual World of Shakespeare is a great class! Interesting material and always nice to get off campus on Fridays and meet at the National Gallery. Highly recommend!
I literally cannot recommend her enough. She is literally known to have the easiest and most fun UW at GW. Like there is so much less reading to do for her class than the other UW and all the assignments build off each other so the final papers and stuff are super easy. And you don't even have to read or buy the books cuz its literally that simple
Pollack is amazing. Her assignments are not necessarily easy, but she gives great feedback and is willing to help. She has amazing lectures and is so excited about the material that it's impossible to not enjoy class. Had class at the National Gallery of Art every few weeks, which was a great addition to class. Highly recommend her class!
always made herself easy to reach. Really cared about her students and made sure we excelled.
Dr. Pollack's Art in the Time of Shakespeare course was fantastic! Great freshman year writing course. Little outside reading. Visits to the NGA or Folger Shakespeare Library every Friday. She really invests herself in your writing, and if you put the effort into your work, it's very easy to succeed and impress her. Wonderful teacher.
Fantastic professor for UW. Made my UW experience effortless.
Professor Pollack is one of the most caring and helpful professors I've had. She's so enthusiastic about the material that it makes everyone interested and gives everyone the chance to focus on what they enjoy most.
So lucky have been able to have her as a professor; this was one of the best academic experiences I've had. The class is not easy, but she is very helpful, and I feel as if my time spent on this class was worthwhile and even contributed to the scholarly discussion on the topics. Ten/ten would recommend for anyone even slightly interested in art.
Prof. Pollack is really passionate about art and this is evident in her lectures. Multiple writing assignment but they aren't hard, she isn't a tough grader. If you just complete the writing assignments you'll get an A. Went to the National Gallery of Art every Friday. Pollack is just an overall awesome professor and a sweet person to talk to.
Rachel is so sweet. Her class is not hard, but you do have to show up and do the assignments thoughtfully and on time. If you do, she will try her hardest to ensure you get an A. She gives excellent feedback, and every week class is held in a museum/library. From what I hear, Rachel's class is superior to the other UWs. TAKE HER CLASS!
My favorite professor at GW. She is super passionate about her class and you don't need to like or know anything about Shakespeare to take. Easy A!
I loved having Dr. Pollack as a professor! She was clearly so passionate about Shakespeare and Art History, which made class more interesting. We always went to museums on Fridays, which was one of my favorite parts of the class. She wants you to have opportunities you wouldn't get anywhere else. Highly recommend her class!
Pollack is such a gem. Throughout her entire class she presented interesting lectures both on the Vern and at the National Gallery of Art. Pollack grades fairly and as long as you make sense, you're probably fine. Show up to class and PARTICIPATE! It's not that hard to talk about art, okay? She loves it. TAKE HER CLASS. You won't regret it.
As a sophmore at GW, I can definitively say that professor Pollack is the best professor I have had so far, and I doubt anyone else will ever come close. She is engaging, passionate, and incredibly kind. Her grading criteria is clear, and if you go to her for help and put in the work, making an A or A- is completely feasible. Take her for UW!!!
Professor Pollack is absolutely amazing. She is a fair grader, perhaps even a generous one. She listens to students and is very understanding, which makes the class more enjoyable. Her lectures are amazing and I actually learn a lot. I took this class because I had to, it has nothing to do with my majors, and yet it is one of my favorites so far!!!
This woman is an amazing professor. A true gem. Show up to class, show up to Friday's gallery (yes even if you're hungover she will be so nice and understanding its almost comical), and contribute one opinion. That is it, you'll pass and chances are you'll actually enjoy a class on erudite topics such as Dutch Art. For a UW this class is amazing.
Definitely one of the best professors I've had-- she's so sweet and passionate about art it genuinely makes everyone want to put their best foot forward in class. She's always excited to hear students' perspectives and ideas and grades very fairly. Take her if you get a chance, even if it isn't your major!!
Hands down one of the best professors I've had. You almost have to try to not do well; she makes the material very approachable. Just participate and put effort into your papers and you'll be fine
A truly incredible professor. She is so knowledgable about her subject, so kind, and so funny. I could not have asked for a better professor for any class. She is there to help you learn and she can always be counted on to help you along the way. This school needs to make her a fulltime professor because I want to take more classes with her.
Dr. Pollack is great. I took her Shakespeare in Art topic (don't worry if you're not a Shakespeare person). She's one of the most caring professors at GW and is willing to work with students and teaches how to efficiently research. I highly recommend Dr. Pollack's class to fulfill the UW requirement and improve your writing.
I took 'Art of Shakespeare' for Pollack's UW class without having read any Shakespeare. She's energetic, quirky, and gives super-specific feedback on assignments. I would have gotten an A if I met with her more outside of class to discuss my papers. Take this class if you love Shakespeare or art history of the Renaissance.
Professor Pollack an incredible teacher who is so sweet, understanding, and wickedly smart. Her class was by far my favorite class of that semester. The class was on 17th century Dutch art, but I found my passion in 15th century Flemish art and she totally encouraged me. She goes out of her way to provide resources and help her students succeed.
Professor Pollack really enjoys the subject and is extremely supportive of her student!
Rachel Pollack is a great professor, lovely lady and actually seems shy! Once you get to know her in class she definitely opens up and her teaching just flows. She goes topic to topic very well and is easy to follow. I'm a STEM major and this is a very non stem class but she made it one of my favorites. Consider this professor.
Prof Pollack is passionate about art history and a very kind, helpful professor. Since it is a survey class you cover a lot of art in a short time but the class is a great option for an intro level art history course. She does a great job of covering the important pieces from each period. As long as you read and show up to lecture you'll do well
I took HONR 2053: Mythology in Art with Professor Pollack. I had her in the online semester and I enjoyed it so much! She is absolutely brilliant and incredibly knowledgeable about the material. Discussion is fascinating and focused on student interest which is great. Would definitely take it again if I could!
if you get anything below a A-, that means you were slacking. She really cares that you pass and all you have to do is come to lecture and listen. THATS IT. all exams are super easy, and open note. she even gives a few opportunities for extra credit, just show the effort. As a premed student this class was a fun break from science, very interesting
Easily the best Professor I've had at GW! One of the most caring, brilliant, and genuine people out there. This is the second course I've taken with Dr. Pollack and I want to take so many more with her. She forms real bonds with her students. TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES! You seriously won't regret it (even if you know nothing about art history).
I took her class about Dutch Painting from the NGA. I was a bit uncertain about the topic choice, but this was my favorite class this semester! Professor Pollack is incredibly knowledgeable, caring, and understanding. It is moderately writing intensive but she's very clear about what she wants from you! Please take this class!!
Professor Pollack is a very engaging professor who truly cares about what she teaches. Dutch Painting at the NGA is a great option for UW because while there is a lot of work she offers a lot of help, peer reviews etc. and wants you to succeed.
Literally one of the greatest professors I've ever had. I didn't have a lot of love for the subject (Dutch Art). But she is so understanding and found ways to make it interesting for me by helping me write about things that I was interested in. Very good with online formats and always gave me an extension when I needed one.
I took 'Art of Shakespeare' for my UW and I can't recommend her class enough. Professor Pollack is a very passionate about what she teaches. Even in an online setting, she makes an effort to accommodate students. She was amazing for UW, she gives extensive feedback, peer reviews , office hours and really wants you to succeed. Take this class!
I LOVE Prof. Pollack. She is easily one of the kindest professors available at GW, and she's so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about what she teaches. I've taken quite a few classes with her and she is a very reasonable grader. Her classes are heavy on lectures and light on participation, but she's a delight to listen to.
Pollack is very knowledgeable about the topics discussed in class. She is very kind and really wants her students to succeed. For papers, she had conferences with every student to brainstorm & make sure they were on the right track. Classes are discussion-based and we often went to the National Gallery of Art. Beware lots of reading, sometimes dry.
I took her Greek Ideal in Art class and loved it! Her lectures aren't super engaging, but she is so passionate about what she teaches! Also, she took us to the NGA which was awesome. Her class has a lot of reading and writing but she is a pretty easy grader who gives a lot of feedback to your writing. Love her.
I took Professor Pollack's Greek Ideal in Art class and I cannot recommend it enough. The course content was new for me but I learned so much about research and I feel a lot more confident in my ability to tackle big papers now. Pollack is caring, approachable, and has the best office hours. Would definitely take her class again.
I had Professor Pollack for Shakespeare in the Arts, and she was the best professor ever. She is so caring and understanding; she cares about her student's success has longest you do your job in her class, you will pass. Always send her your papers for feedback; her feedback is valuable and amazing; she will give you so much feedback on papers.
Very accommodating professor, will always grant extensions if need be. Very lecture heavy class, but you don't really need to pay attention too too hard. Midterm and final test are online, and only one research paper. Overall, a light course which will not weigh on your workload and is honestly very interesting.
Professor Pollack is one of the best professors at GW. The class is very easy and you do not need to pay attention very much. She grants extensions whenever you need them and the midterm and final are both online and open notes with multiple days to do them. The one research paper is only 5 pages and you get to pick the topic. Highly recommend.
I love Rachel, she's very passionate about her field and she wants her students to be excited about it as well. She is a little quirky but very kind and accessible outside of class if you ever have questions/concerns and very funny one-on-one. There was a lot of writing for this class but understandable as a UW. Great person and a great professor!
I took this course with no knowledge of Dutch Art, but really ended up enjoying it. Professor Pollack is very caring and gives great feedback on your papers; your writing truly improves a lot. That being said, beware there's a lot of writing, even for a UW, and you are expected to attend visits to the National Gallery of Art every Friday.
She's super nice! Even if you aren't interested in her topic, her passion of it will definitely rub off on you and will keep you engaged! Best professor I've had so far!
Nicest professor at the entire University and gives great feedback. A lot of lectures are readings heavy and she loves to cold call for participation. As long as you do the work, you'll be fine. Talk with her because she can be very helpful with assignments.
For the Greek Ideal in Art, most of the homework is readings that you discuss in class. Lots of writing, could be more than other UWs but I'm not sure. Amazing professor, she knows so much and will always help with ideas and sources if you ask.
Pollack is super kind and caring. I knew nothing abt art history before taking this class and I feel like I learnt a lot. Yes, there is a lot of writing in this class, but if you do the work and show some effort you will get a good grade.
Took her UW1020 class on Dutch Painting. She's very very nice, incredibly knowledgeable, super caring, and really helps you try to become a better writer. There is a lot of writing in this class, but she is always willing to help you out. Honestly, the only way you can get below a B is if you literally do nothing/don't show up.
Professor Pollack is the best professor I've had. She is so knowledgeable and passionate about art history and makes herself accessible to students outside of class. She's a pretty easy grader, if you put effort into your writing. There's a decent workload, but she gives good feedback, is flexible with deadlines, and class trips to NGA.
A really great professor with so much enthusiasm and pushes her students to do their best. You do not have to have any sort of prior knowledge on art which is great since it is an easier UW. She is a very generous grader just do all your work and show that you care. Highly highly recommend for a UW since it is not too heavy and dense.
One of the best professors I've had here, but don't think that this is a chill class. Yes, she's wonderful and a generous grader, but this UW has SO much writing, much more than many others I know about. My friends in other UWs were appalled at how much work I had. Make sure you're happy to write A TON about art history using primary sources.
Truly one of the best professors I have ever had. I am a STEM major and had no idea what I was getting into when I picked a Dutch Art class. Little did I know I would have a professor that made me discover an interest in artwork. Very kind, passionate, and inspirational. I recommend Professor Pollack to anyone who has the slightest interest in art.
I'm an Art History major and this course helped my writing skills exponentially. Decent amount of reading but you only need to skim. Suuuuuper easy grader and soft deadlines. Like, submit something and get an A-. If you put in effort, you'll learn to push yourself with research and she'll introduce you to every resource in DC.
Dr. Pollack is an amazing professor and will engage you in art history. This UW was a little writing heavy, especially with the final, but overall not awful. She is a lenient grader, and is always willing to help out her students. She will like you a lot if you show up to class, do the work, and participate in conversation with her.
Pollack is a great professor! Super caring and a relatively easy grader. Participations does matter and will help you in the long run as well as doing the readings. Super knowledgable and gives good feedback on your assignments. As long as you participate and turn in work its an almost guaranteed A!
The professor has a lot of knowledge of the subject and makes sure you understand the material through participation. Dutch art is reading and writing heavy so expect to do the work outside of class every day to not cram it all before the deadline. She's an easy grader and provides good feedback for future writing assignments.
Professor Pollack is amazing! I came into her Dutch Art History course with little interest in art, and left with an all new appreciation. She was by far my most dedicated and knowledgeable professor. She has incredible connections and allows you to dive deep into the class. This is certainly a challenging UW, but worth it if thats what you want.
I really loved Professor Pollack's Greek Ideal in Art class! This class was very riveting and improved my writing skills a lot. There's a lot of writing in this class, which is expected for UW, but Pollack was super nice, graded very easily, and gave amazing feedback. I don't plan on majoring in art history, but Pollack helped me admire it a lot.
Professor Pollack was my favorite professor this semester. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Dutch art, which made for a fun class. Although there was a lot of writing required, she gives amazing feedback and grades nicely. She organizes lectures and field trips at the NGA often, which is very cool. I wish she taught more classes.
Took her for her Dutch Art UW, she is a sweetheart! A great professor overall and really helpful when it comes to improving your writing skills. She does assign a lot of reading and more work than your usual professor, but easiest grader. She is also super flexible with due dates, just let her know in advanced.
Pollack has been my favorite professor at GW. I took her Dutch Art UW despite having no knowledge about Art History and it was fantastic. Yes, there's a good amount of work, but you learn so much about writing and art history. Also, she is a very easy grader, gives good feedback whenever you ask, and extends due dates if you need. Highly recommend!
Minimal papers and writing assignments compared to other UWs. Assigns a good amount of readings but there's honestly no reason to do them. Very lenient grader and VERY understanding with late submissions. She's extremely passionate about Greek art so this was honestly just a super fun class to take and wasn't hard at all. Would definitely recommend
Pollack is a lovely proffessor. She's extremely knowledgable and passionate about art history. You learn a lot in her UW class without being over stressed by readings. The trips to the art gallery archives where you get to see rembrandts up close outside of the frames made the class worth every minute.
I really enjoyed my UW with Professor Pollack. She was approachable to talk with and ask for advice or clarifications on essays. There were about 3 major essays in this class with multiple drafts before submission. We took multiple trips to art galleries, rare book rooms, and the Folger library, which were honestly such interesting experiences.
You could not pay me money to take a class with Professor Pollack again. I had an awful experience. I dreaded going to class every day we had it. I've never written a review on here before but I decided that her current rating of 4.8 is way too high. I learned nothing in this class despite having completed every assignment.
Professor Pollack is an incredible teacher who makes this writing-intensive course super engaging. With minimal papers and lenient grading, it's an easy A. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for acing the readings!
TAKE THIS CLASS!! I took Art in the Age of Shakespeare with Professor Pollack this semester, and she is the BEST! She is clearly passionate about the subject, and she is so knowledgeable about Shakespeare and art history in general. I will admit, there is a fair amount of writing. BUT, it is about the same, if not less than other UW1020 classes.
Literally love this prof. Pollack is clearly passionate about the material and knows her stuff. Classes were discussion-based based and she tends to go on tangents. Overall a really fun class and I highly recommend.
Prof. Pollack is a super caring individual who cares a ton about what she teaches and her students. My only warning is to read the course description for the UW because if you're not into art history or Shakespeare, it might be a bit boring for you. However, if the class sounds interesting to you, take it! Prof. Pollack is awesome!
