Very young and dorky prof. She treats class like in high school..but very very passionate bout the subject. very interactive way of learning. her style of teaching is very modern. but the tests are mostly short answer (somewhat hard) but give review sheet. need to go to class bcuz she give out info on test. I would recommend if u love the subject.
There is never a dull moment in her class. She made sociology a blast with all her fun activities and social experiments she has us do. A must take Prof. Her tests are easy if you come to class everyday (she give out test questions everyday of class)!!
She knows the subject but does NOT know how to teach it!
She is a professor that makes an effort to get to know you and makes learning hands-on. Definetly take her class. Basically, if you come to class you will do well.
Very good teacher, easy to understand and loves participation...really kept me interested in the subject...she is a little dorky and rigid at times but overall very nice teacher and good at it too...recommend her for sure...
She really makes learning fun!
awesomely dorky!! she has a genuine passion for this stuff, class is easy but thorough enough to still learn, never used textbook, only 2 tests for whole semester.
She is really easy! You have to attend class regularly, because her tests are basically lecture based! She's always giving you test questions and tells you EXACTLY what she wants you to know! She's a little dorky, but really nice and she ALWAYS makes herself available to help you.
I took her last semester with minimal interest in the subject and came away with a different perspective. Shes a little too generous with the extra credit, but other than that, the tests are very lecture orientated. The lectures are very organized, which is why attendance is a plus. One of the most down to earth people youll ever meet.
I took this teacher for sociology 2 years in a row, she tells you straight up exactly what you need to do to pass the class. Shes a great teacher.
very good
Really easy class, a little boring and attendance policy is annoyin cause u hafta show up to every class, but definitely take it if you want an easy A.
She is the best!
Super nice and friendly teacher, does like to call on you randomly which I hated, but still an easy class, never read the textbook and she's really helpful when you ask a question. TAKE HER!
Really easy class. She is really passionate about sociology. There's 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 short paper, and 2 discussions on blackboard. Everyday before class, she gives 1 test q&a and the same q&a usually end up on tests too. You need the textbook only before tests to read a few sections. Overall, A MUST TAKE CLASS! I got an A in the class.
Great Professor. Super clear about her expectations, and she really wants her students to do well. TAKE HER
I took marriage & family in the fall with her, loved it so much that I took intro with her in the spring! She makes me what to be a soc major! Everything is very clear. Powerpoint lessons, and minimal book use for test. 2 easy & short papers, no hw. Midterm & final are easy since she gives out test questions daily. Con: Sometimes pick on students.
Her expectations are super clear and easy to achieve. She is extremely helpful and encourages students to get help when needed. Most likely you won't need the extra help because she is so easy. 2 tests 3 mini papers and no homework. Easy A
I took her for Marriage and Life (110) and Intro to Soc (180) She is an AMAZING teacher. I love, love, love, love, love her. Easy A if you do the work. She's CRYSTAL clear on what she wants from day 1. Put in effort and attend class, easy A. She's so fun and interactive. My favorite teacher in the whole world. Just show up and print out her notes
She's a little bit kooky but definitely crystal clear in everything she requires of you as student (and on tests) and makes class pretty interesting with south park clips etc. Don't take this class if you aren't planning on coming or paying attention-she will call you out. I plan on taking her marriage and family class if I can.
Super Easy, take her.
She is extremely helpful and clear on what she expects from you and your work. You will learn. Take her, you will love her!
Easiest class ever and great professor but she will drive you CRAZY! If you so much as whisper to the person next to you, she will call you out and say that you are being "incredibly rude". Class consisted of a super easy midterm and final, two 1 page papers, and then one 2 page paper. Take this class as your "easy class" to help your GPA. EASY A!
I enjoyed her class--she connected concepts to real life, which made the material easier to understand (and the class more interesting). As long as you study the notes, attend class regularly, and read the book, you should have no problems with her class.
Professor Ridnor is awesome! She is strict, but this is college, if you want to text and not pay attention, why are you there? Got a 99% in the class. Go to class and study the study guide and you will definitely pass. I highly recommend you take her class!!
This class was very interesting! Her voice kind of made me doze off at times. however I have no complaints about her teaching style. She is very fair about grading and one of the better lecturers at OCC. Very knowledgeable about Sociology and not one of those professors that hold your hands. Very easy if you attend class. Take it for honors units!
I took this class thinking Soc to be super fun, but social problems is the most boring class I have ever taken. I can see why people like her, but i personally did not like her lol. She has a lot of attitude, and will literally eat you alive if you are on her bad side. Don't show up late. Class is pretty easy though
She is the fastest grader I have ever had, returns grades literally the same day. She is a fair grader. The class is super easy, but I personally thought social problems was super boring class. Lecture is pretty dull, but she tries her best to make it entertaining. Barely any extra credit. Kind of intimidating, almost comes off as rude.
She is tougher than I expected but I feel I came out as a better honors student. Don't be late, don't touch your phone, and especially don't talk back because this woman is well educated and fiesty. You will lose. She is a great professor though and is passionate about sociology. Class is only out of 200 points so every point counts. I'd recommend.
The class is pretty easy with 200 points available, but she assigns many papers and you are required to do volunteer work. The lectures were kind of boring and long, but they were straight to the point and the exams are just like the lectures with some application based. Also, she comes off as rude at times. Overall, easy A.
Tests are pretty simple if you study from the study guide she provides for you. Class discussions are interesting and she plays videos once in a while as part of the lecture. Overall, Ridnor likes to engage students in class activitiesdiscussions and shows a lot of enthusiasm in the field of Sociology. Easy A if you work hard and do extra credit!
So yourself a favor and choose another sociology professor! Plenty around to choose from
She's not a "tough" grader, more like a picky grader. She posts clear rubrics on what your assignments should have. I followed those and got full credit on everything. Her study guides for Midterm/Final are very representative of the test, so study and you'll get an A for sure. Interesting class too, pretty easy A. She's very professional, take her
The syllabus is important, so look back it weekly. Exams are easy, but papers/discussions is where you can see her rudeness and opinion (even though she claims she doesn't give out her opinions). She makes the class harder than it should be and not as enjoyable. I usually love my soc classes, but this was my least favorite class all semester.
She is extremely smart. However, she knows it and that can be a problem when you try to ask her a question. Unless she said it, it's not right. There is extra credit, her office hours are very helpful, and her tests are easy. Beware of papers, those are the assignments that will make or break your grade. Take her if you know you got this.
We wrote lots of research papers in this class, and they are NOT easy; you'll definitely get sharper in your research writing skills. The tests are extremely straight-forward, however, and you will get an A if you just pay attention in class and study. I had no trouble on the tests, but rather on the writing. This is a great intro class :) 10/10
She is a very harsh grader. I would submit what I thought was my best work and only get a C. Her lectures are pretty vague and if you don't go to class, you wont get all of the material because she only posts modified versions of the lectures.
Very organised professor. She is very passionate about Sociolgy and wants to see every student succeed. Very approachable and encourages you to visit her outside of class. She's a picky grader, so be sure to go through her detailed assignments and double check yourself. Only downfall is that she is EXTREMELY rude at times and does t care.
Her intro to race course was great! Her lectures were amazing and easy to participate in. She's very clear of what she expects from you. There's HW quizzes, 2 exams, and multiple research essays that are kinda hard if you don't put forth enough effort. As long as you show up, take good notes, do the HW, and study, you'll be fine.
If you've ever had her class, you can tell she obviously cares about teaching. Super passionate about soc and is always looking for ways to improve (sometimes it even comes off as her trying TOO hard hahah). Overall, tests are lecture based. Simple, easy to understand powerpoint lectures. Pay attention and study! Tough grader on papers.
This class is very difficult if you do not do the reading assignments. Discussions are fun but she is a super tough grader so you need to know what you're writing about. No test besides midterm and final. She gives great lectures and is super approachable and loves teaching but you do need to show up to class and pay attention.
She was an okay professor. The lectures were interesting but had nothing to do with the book they talked more about the real world. The book was almost useless. The reading quizzes are one to two questions and we hardly went over the reading in class. When she would write on the board it was almost not readable which was very annoying at times.
She is a decent professor, but she does have a few faults. Can be harsh and come off as rude at times, and extremely repetitive. This class is easy to pass only if you do not forget any apply it quizzes, and listen to her feedback. She is an unnecessarily hard grader. I do recommend never missiong class. if you do work you'll get a solid b.
I took Soc. 185 last Spring (2017) and absolutely loved it! The material was interesting and the lectures very informative and well done. Professor Ridnor is a very fair grader and always available in her office during office hours. I am an older student, my views are conservative; I never felt anything but safe and supported in this class.
I was previously a 4.0 GPA student. I never missed class, did all homework assignments, and got As on every test... but for some reason my final grade was a B? The essays were graded more harshly than the Eng 101 class I took. The professor tries too hard, and not in the good way either.
Her exams are not hard at all as long as you follow the study guide and attend classes regularly. Make sure you do not miss any lecturers. There are two discussions throughout the semester. It is easy to get A for those discussion essays as long as you follow her instruction. OFFICE HOURS can be one of the reasons that I got A+ in this class.
Professor really cares about her students. Makes sure everyone understands her lessons, and gives clear instructions to assignments. Show up to lectures and you'll get an A for sure. Tests are very easy; almost all the stuff on the exam are on the lecture notes or reading assignment, and the professor outlines what's going to be on the test.
I changed my major bc of her! Lectures are interesting and easy to understand and she has a VERY clear grading criteria. If you do your work and don't halfass it, there's no reason why u shldn't do well. Attendance mandatory even if she says it isn't because your grade curve depends on it.
Tough, material is surprisingly heavy and she grades papers VERY anally. She is passionate and enjoyable, but only gives study guides a week or 2 before the test which makes note-taking very difficult considering how much information is in the book. apply it quizzes are super easy to forget so make sure to do them a day before they are due.
Professor Ridnor is unlike any professor I have had. Very type A and says that she has clear grading rubrics but in fact they confuse you very much. says that she doesn't voice her opinion but she does and she is not very helpful when providing feedback.
Very kind teacher. She is really funny and nice. Her class is overall easy as long as you show up and pay attention. She has 2 essays which are relatively easy and she is open to help you if you come to her office hours. She has 2 exams which are really easy if you do the study guides and a few online quizzes which are open book. Totally recommend!
I loved her class so much, I am very passionate about sociology and you can tell she is too. Shes funny, sweet, and really tries to help you. Wish I could take these classes over again. Just do all of the work and youll pass with an A. Super clear instructions and study guides.
Rachel cares that you understand the material & makes herself a resource to her students. Her grading on papers is kind of tough, but she gives you outlines for what she expects. Plus papers are short so you have to be concise; which is a good skill to have anyway. If you show up and keep up, there isn't any reason you can't pass with an A.
Extremely particular and tough grader. She gives extremely vague directions for assignments and penalizes you when you don't do exactly what she believes is correct even though the directions are unclear.
This teacher is a great public speaker whose lectures are easy to follow. Class was always interesting. There was not much work in the course I took: 2 tests, a few short essays, and little else. Pretty easy overall - just make sure you follow the instructions on the essays to a T. Write the way she wants & you should do fine.
She is one of the best professors that I ever had in OCC. The papers were a little bit challenging, but if you come to her office hours she would give you feedback on your rough draft, and she really and I mean really CARE about her students. Everything I learned in her class helps me a lot after I transferred.
This was the only class I got a C in. All my other classes I have received As. She is a very tough grader and is rude. she ruined this class for me. I never had problems with any other professors except her. She made this class very Hard to enjoy and made it miserable to go to class. I felt like I couldnt even reach out for help on assignments.
If I could give her a -5 i would because it honestly seems like she doesn't know what she's doing and she is very rude. i am doing great in my other classes except hers because she does not care about you or other people. she gives me vibes like she just wants to fail you. more than half the class dropped out and i dont even know why i haven't.
Rachel Rindor is the rudest teacher and person that I have had to deal with. She was very rude in all her messages i even felt bullied in some messages she sent. She is very particular and if one teacher should be removed from this school it should be her. Way more difficult than my english class, what is wrong with her.
This class was a bit difficult, and she definitely expects you to be working and thinking on a college level. Lots of lectures and a weekly quiz, but really if you do the notes, discussions, and study guides you'll do fine. STUDY!! I have a B rn with 3 weeks left to bring it up so if you take this class make sure to commit to it- you'll learn a lot
Lectures arent helpful, she just reads what the slides says, they arent information thats on the test. There are very few assignments making it impossible to get a good grade if you do bad on just one assignment. She grades hard on papers, she doesnt give clear guidelines and literally is looking to take off as many points as she can. Horrible!
Loved Ridnor & her asynchronous class . Her expectations are clear. She sends reminders for upcoming assignments. She was always available by email when needed clarification on an assignment or direct feedback. For papers, she will review drafts and give very detailed notes. Study guides for exams left no surprises. Extra credit avail up to 4 pts
She's extremely friendly, definitely go to her office hours and send her emails if you have questions. I worked with her on my papers (you have to send a rough draft a week prior but she'll work with you in it the week leading up to due date) and got 100% on both. The workload isn't too heavy either. There's 4 points of extra credit available too
Ridnor was good and so was her online class. Sends constant reminders for assignments, gives clear expectations, and email was always open (except weekends) for clarification on assignments or feedback. Optional drafts she provided detailed suggestions on, but was critical. Gave great study guides for exams & plenty e.c. options.
defiantly a great professor and definitely would take again and HIGHLY RECOMMEND
If you are a decent writer and can take good notes, this class is literally a breeze. Lots of Extra Credit and yeah she encourages people to send papers early so she can comment on them.
Professor Ridnor really has a genuine passion for sociology and teaching! If you start on the projects (ex. exploriments, article response, academic dialogue) early, they won't seem overwhelming. She held office hours and gave students the chance to turn in papers early so she can give feedback. The content was really interesting, as well.
I really valued Rachel's teacher ethics. She emphasized fairness and respect. You could definitely tell her passion for the subject. She was helpful and clear whenever I approached her for any help during office hours. Get ready for quite a few hefty writing assignments. The tests were appropriate and accurate to what was learned in class.
Rachel is awesome, I wish I can take more classes with her. Her grading is clear cut and simple, if you put in the work, you'll pass. Show up for office hours if you really want to excel but put in the time and you'll be passing with flying colors. She's caring and makes learning fun, will definitely be using sociology in my everyday life.
Despite her highly subjective grading and lectures focused more on political correctness, I'm really trying to like this class. She just sent a mass email to the class suggesting that anyone not doing well in her class could have a learning disability. She is nowhere near qualified to even hint at something like that, and frankly, she's out of line
One of my favorite classes this semester. Super nice, takes her time with students, answers any and all questions. Do the chapter notes during her lecture and you should be fine. Also, the class discussions are always entertaining. It's rare for me to genuinely enjoy a class but I did :-)
She is nice that is true, but to be honest her class was just okay. The subject of social problems is interesting but I wouldnt have her as a teacher again. The class is easy though. I didnt like that all the studies she presented were from the 1900s like please get some current studies.
Amazing Soc class. I would take it again if I could. Attendance isn't mandatory, but final exams will rely on notes taken in class. You'll do amazing if you take notes for quizzes and generally pay attention. She makes the concepts very easy to grasp and always offers her office hours for more help. Great professor and really cares about students.
The textbook was so old. The lecture material was old. She tries hard to be cool but sounds more like my mom talking down to me. Talks about caring but writes really hard test questions. My grade was okay but class was not fun.
I loved this class! Everything is super organized and you're given all the tools to succeed. The textbook is free and has pretty short chapters. There were 3 papers and some discussion posts you do in class. As long as you pace yourself throughout the semester you should have no issues. The grade you get reflects the time and effort you put in.
I've been a great student with nearly As in every class as well as around a 4.0 GPA. One of the hardest classes I've ever taken not because the material was hard, but because the professor teaching it has no idea how to teach or grade work. Ridnor, if you're reading this, I want you to know that I didn't GIVE you this rating, you EARNED it! :)
She is a pretty easygoing teacher just has some small things she is adamant about so do follow her rules or else she gets pretty tweaky. Not to scare you or anything, just keep that in mind. Other than that, as long as you do what is told everything should be fine.
Very clear on what she wants (if you deviate it will reflect badly on your grade), few assignments but she wants you to spend TIME and EFFORT on them. 2 tests, both weren't too bad. DO NOT SHOW UP LATE TO CLASS
LOVED the class and professor. She is very nice and makes the class enjoyable. Her class is easy if you pay attention and take notes whenever she lectures. There are 2 exams that are not bad at all as she reviews the study guides that tell you specifically what to study for on the exams
She's a great teacher, she's very passionate about the class and made the subject interesting. If you participate and answer questions, she really likes it. The homework was only a few assignments. They had very clear instructions and are not too bad. Class has a clear structure. You can photocopy textbook from library. I recommend this teacher. :D
Professor isn't the most passionate about teaching the subject. Grades late and isn't the best. Also doesn't actually read the essays she makes you right
Very strict on deadlines, would not allow an extension because of technology difficulties even though assignment was completed and it was let known to the professor that it was done. would not recommend if looking for a flexible professor
Good professor, I just lowkey suck at sociology. Textbook can be found online, clear rubric. Do homework, turn things in on time, accommodate time for big stuff (AKA: don't take 3 other honors classes). This class will actually use the textbook, so find a free one online.
She is a very kind lady. There is a bunch of little tiny quizzes and then 2 large exams and 3 papers. She gives you very detailed feedback on what to fix on your papers in order to get an A+. The class did get very boring at times but the class is definitely passable. She does talk sometimes to you like you are eight years old, however. ThumbsUP
I don't wanna take again. I took a lot of classes. Thus, I can't go her office hours. When I want her to review my exploriment which is like essay, she said “ you have to submit every 8am. If you miss once, I never review your assignments.” She can't understood students have other classes. Plz take other classes. This is the worst choice I ever did.
Ridnor is a passionate ball of energy and has a way of getting you engaged and excited for class. Come to class on time, don't be a passive learner, and take advantage of her generous offer to review your papers and give good feedback before its due. You will get an A. Also you are given almost a month to write papers.
Rachel is a great, passionate professor. There are a few papers, but sets clear expectations for papers/tests, including what you need to study + how to succeed. Come early, take lots of notes, do the readings and show that you are putting time and effort into all assignments (office hours=great for feedback), and this class is super enjoyable!
The course included three exploratory projects and a final essay based on a chosen article, which allowed for in-depth learning. While her exams can be challenging.but remember that you should do the work on time! And be IN CLASS on time because she always gives the exam questions in the first 10 minutes in the class.
I really like this professor. There was a lot of work for this class, but maybe everyone can manage it. You should go her office hours. If you study, you can get A because all of the exam answers are in the exams are in the lecture notes or exam review sheet. Also, I recommend her classes for sociology majors.
She is super rude! Trying to be the “cool teacher” but then just puts you down. Don't come late to class either, or she'll stare you down during the middle of her lecture! Felt like I was getting bullied. This is the worst class any student can take, please stay away at all costs!!!!!!!
Rachel Ridnor is the best professor I have ever had. She tells you exactly what she wants; all you have to do is give it to her. -Come to class and don't be late. -Do the readings. -Fill out her exam study guides. -Ask questions. -Turn in assignments on time. -GO TO OFFICE HOURS. I truly think her negative reviews come from bitter students.
If u r lookin 4 easy class, it's not 4 u. but if u have time to put efforts, u will be fine. you have around 4 paper work. She tries to be nice, so u feel she is nice at first. but later, u will realize she isn't. If u study based on exam review, u can get A or B. I'm sure. She makes exam from only what she said and textbook. It's hard but easy.
Love the subject, hate the professor. She definitely loves her job but I did not like how she treated everyone. She'd give us 10 minutes to talk in groups when only 1 minute was necessary and if your group stopped talking she'd stand with you guys and judge you and get mad for not continuing the discussion. Do not recommend!
I learned so much in this class. It's great prep for university. I genuinely don't understand the negative reviews for Rachel? She's so supportive and clear. Participation goes a long way. Just do the work lol if you want to cheat/ use AI, this isn't your class. If you want to learn and you're actually interested in SOC, this one's for you.
Rachel's expectations are clear, and she's very accessible. She gives out the test questions in class. She likes participation and will check on your groups, but she isn't rude at all. Easy A. There is reading outside of class, but it isn't bad; just use the notes outline she provides. Rachel clearly cares and is super smart. I would recommend!
I studied for 2 or 3 days before the exams and I got A. So maybe you will be fine.
