This has to be the most miserable I have ever been in a class. Lectures are boring and monotonous. Grading structure is unclear and test/quiz question style is extremely frustrating. If I wanted to write numerous essays I would have taken english comp. She is trying too hard to prove her freshly earned degree.
Tests have several essays with some multiple choice questions. Only Reference the book and study vigerously on her notes. This was by far the most challenging class (worst then chem). She is trying too hard to impress her supiors. Not enough time to cover all the material she wants to cover. Don't argue with her.
Where do I start? I agree this teacher has something to prove, her superiority perhaps? Teaching style is poor, I can read the information myself. Tests are difficult, not impossible as long as you remember everything that was said and some that wasn't. Very unprofessional, too much talking , not enough teaching! DO NOT DISAGREE WITH HER!!!!
It is clear she is new at teaching. Lectures are fair, labs could be more organized. Exams are difficult, study hard!! I have had worse teachers.
If you have the misfortune of getting her as a "teacher"-- RUN. However, if you're looking for someone to babysit you, than stay. I think she forgot she's teaching college adults- She checks everything you do in lab, and if she doesn't make it around to you in this century, she makes you re-do what she knows you already did.
I am in her class now and i can only say now that she seens very good.BUT this is only the beginning so i hope what you all say is the past and that she is not as scattered. We have to give a break to the fact that she got thrown in during a summer semester. she will get used to it like we all do!
I am taking this class currently. I find Mrs. Sackett to be very witty and interesting to listen to. She is very approachable. Yes, she is still new, but she is very passionate about this subject. Tests are difficult if you are not a good writer. And yes, there is a lot of information... but face it... we are in college, not preschool.
She definately doesn't spoon feed you. I believe she wants us to think and learn how to research for ourselves. Her notes could be a little more clear. Not outlined exactly like I needed. If I had other classes at the same time I would have had a major problem. She's definately got a bad rap from many of the students who didn't want to work!

I found her lectures to be very dry and not very specific. However, her tests require you to be very specific and to know more than the powerpoints given out in class. If you love to take very detailed notes in class and then go home and spend an hour reading the textbook, then she's the professor for you!
Class is difficult however she gives powerpoints of all material and tells you what you need to know for tests. She requires you to think-we're in college--it's good to be challenged and not be spoon-fed. I feel prepared to go on to a 4 year school after having her. Don't take her if you don't want to use your brain.
MICROBIOLOGY IS HARD TO BEGIN WITH. SHE MAKES IT HARDER WITH INCOMPREHENSABLE POWER POINTS. STUDY GUIDES ARE TO STUDY EVERYTHING! TESTS ARE CONFUSING AT BEST AND ITS SEEMS AS IF SHE WANT TO TRIP YOU UP. IT IS A SERIOUS CLASS--PREPARE TO WORK HARD, YOU CAN DO WELL BUT MICRO WILL BE YOUR LIFE FOR THE WHOLE SEMESTER--TAKE EASIER CLASSES WITH IT!
I hated this teacher. She's the worst I've ever had. I studied with flashcards for each test for 2 weeks and still bombed the tests. I'm normally an A/B+ student. There was so much information on the tests that she never covered in class. I had to drop the class before she killed my gpa. I'll try it again with another teacher next semester.
The class sucked, but it wasn't her fault. The whole biology program is terrible. I think she did the best she could with what she had to follow. It was a hard class, but I asked for help and she gave it to me. I was able to get an A. I would take another class she taught.
Overall it?s a good class. Tests are all multiple choice. Easy A, as long as you study all the terms (yes! LOTS of memorizing).
Professor Sackett goes out of her way to make herself available by e-mail, and her dry sense of humor kept a boring class interesting- loved her
I was nervous about getting her, I had heard bad things. Not true. She IS a tough teacher, but very helpful and wants students to do well. Takes other things besides exam grades into consideration. Great teacher, great person.
Extremely prepared for lecture and labs. Answered questions in down to earth manner. Stayed on track after someone asked her a question. I highly recommend her for a teacher.
Ms. Sackett is a very good teacher. She requires you to do what is necessary, but is very fair in that regard. College is supposed to be challenging, yet rewarding. There are clear rewards for the application of intelligence along with hard work.
professor sackett was awesome! i'm going to miss her class sooo much!
Ah, lets just say it's not an easy class by far. She gives out TONS of material and her test are hard. Just be aware that you'll have to put in extra time and effort.
There is a lot of material to learn, but if you work hard you can learn it. She is very clear about what you need to know for the tests and gives out review guides. She is passionate about her subject and it is apparent in class. She cares about the students and will do what she can to help, but you, the student, have to do the work.
Professor is Ok But so much material in power point hand outs. You must study or you will not pass. I never studied so hard to barely pass. Must do extra credit to keep grades up. Don't miss a class because its too much material to miss. Tough Class
Horrible teacher. I loved th lab, but lecture was awful! She letures ok but is bland and boring! She looks at you like your stupid if you ask her to repeat herself, and talks about subjects in way to much detail. She not a good techer at all. She's very interested in the subject and doesnt make it understandable at a lower level! Do not take her.
a great instructor, there's no tricks or anything she didn't talk about in class on her exams. study your notes and you'll do good. Very smart!! i wouldn't take microbiology with anyone other than Prof. Sackett at NVCC. i would take another one of her classes if i had to :)
A lot of material and things to memmorize. She is very detailed. Gives out study guides for exams but they are not exactly what is on exam. A lot of time and effort must be put into this class. DO NOT MISS A CLASS because if you do, you will feel very left behind.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!! She is not a good teacher, she loves the subject but doesn't know how to teach and she looks at you like your stupid if questions are asked. She is unfair and should not be teaching if she doesn't want to be there!
A poor teacher, but a good person. I took her for bio 115 and there was way too much material! I could' t concentrate on anything other than that class. Do yourself a favor and dont take her. She is really nice but her test are awful!
A poor teacher, but a good person. I took her for bio 115 and there was way too much material! I could' t concentrate on anything other than that class. Do yourself a favor and dont take her. She is really nice but her test are awful!
I took her for an intense 4 week version of the course and she was FANTASTIC!! She gives you her PowerPoint handouts and her tests totally follow the material she covers. She's tough, but very fair. This IS college, so YES, you actually have to study...and not one or two days before a test! She clearly loves to teach and was ALWAYS there to help.
Very Hard teacher. I wouldnt recommend taking her class. Very interested in what she teaches, but doesnt make it easy to understand. Tests were horible. I ended up dropping the class months later.
To the comment below you are false. I can understand if you are a part time student taking this class, but if you are full time this will take up your life. WAYYYYYYYY too much material to learn in such a short amount of time. She does not space time between tests and lab quizzes for you. IF YOU CAN AVOID TAKING HER THEN DO IT!!!!
Absolutely terrible teacher. Nice lady, knows the content, yet terrible teacher. You will take a lab test on Thursday and then a lecture test on Tuesday. You will finish all the lecture material on a Tuesday then have a test on it THE VERY NEXT CLASS!Completely unfair grader, has favorites. Takes off 2.5 points for a misspelled word.DO NOT TAKE HER
DO NOT take her. The tests were absolutely horrible. It has nothing to do with not putting in effort, she was just aweful. Hardest class ive ever took. Withdrew late in semester but glad i did. Took over with professor jenny zheng and got an A.
Terrible. I took her in the summer. Despite all my effort that I put in the class it was HORRIBLE. Someone else took her night class and said the same thing. Don't take her!
I took her micro class at night, I wouldnt suggest it.
I do not agree with all the comments. She is a VERY hard teacher but if you put in the work you will learn alot. If you are going into the medical field I would recommend. If you are looking for an easy class to coast through I would not
This was definitely a challenging class without question. Professor Sackett is fair and expects you do to your work and doesn't baby her students. I don't recommend taking with a a full course load. But I liked the class and feel like I got a lot of good information from it. The hard work pays off in her class.
challenging class, but learned a lot! you have to do the reading & study for tests-big shocker-it's college. she's great if you're going into the medical field, makes you use critical thinking skills vital in medicine. generous w/her time and extra credit. cares about teaching and it shows, wants you to be challenged, think & learn to earn gd grade.
Prof. Sackett is one of the best biology teachers I ever had. She's fun, super smart, and engaging in class. She would also stay and help me in lab when if I stayed later. Her tests were hard, but she allowed for extra credit, especially for the final. An amazing person!
I think she's very fair. Her lecture exams arent hard if you study the objectives-which she tells you and she gives a review sheet for lab. She also has a group project and ways to earn extra credit. There are many ways to work towards your grade in her class.
very helpful, knows the material, very clear on the lectures offer lots of extra credit
Great teacher, very willing to help you with your work/studying, but you do need to put time into your studying and work at the material to do well in the class. I enjoyed the semester!
Very knowledgeable and helpful. No not easy!!! Her tests are confusing!!!!
good teacher know what she is talking about and is willing to help you the class itself is so much information it really takes time put in not only in the class but outside of the class as well if you pay attention and study you should be ok ask questions take notes and pay attention
I had her for microbiology. The comments regarding the workload are mostly correct. She teaches to a college level, however she is extremely available for her students and will do evrything she can to help you learn the material.
Excellent teacher. Questions worded so that you need to pay attention to them or could make simple mistake. Makes analogies to real life which makes learning easy.
I took Human Biology with her. Professor Sackett is an amazing teacher. She has high expectations, but you LEARN a lot from her. She makes her learning goals attainable IF you put the work in. I plan on taking Microbiology with her next semester.
Professor Sackett was one of my favorite teachers I've had at NVCC. She truely is a great person. Very nice, and funny. It was a joy to be in her class and I only wish that there was more interest in Genetics so I could take another class with her.
She is great if you are majoring in Biology, if you are just looking to take a course to get by,don't choose her. She gives a lot of material. I work two jobs and attend other classes, I don't think she takes that into account.
Great professor but exams are brutal. I would take this class alone.
The lectures are PPs but she doesn't follow them word for word, she relates it to everyday life and uses real life examples which is very helpful. It is not a easy class though, there is a lot of memorizing. If your into the human body I recommend her. She is a very nice woman too, kinda of a nerd though, but shes cool =D
Heard she was tough, but the class really isn't. You do have to study, but there are no surprises on the tests or lab quizzes. Drops lowest test grade, and gives extra credit, but you need 94% for an A. She is nerdy-cool, and clearly loves her subject. Relates class to the real world in an interesting way. Reasonable when you have a sick kid, etc.
She's a good teacher , a self proclaimed science geek/nerd. She does a good job relating the material with analogies. Takes too long to grade tests. She is fair but you should know EVERY bit of her handouts as she slips in some questions on her tests you may not expect. Not overwhelming , you cannot skate through you do have to study ...
She is a very nice person and very smart! A LOT of studying is needed for this class, I would not recommend taking it with other classes. Her exams and quizzes are very difficult; the quizzes are just as hard as the exams. She also grades VERY VERRRYYY tough!
She's a good teacher but her grading for homework is horrible. Not to meation she can be extremely rude. last time I checked, I payed to take a microbiology class, not to be talked down to. I wouldn't recommend her if you don't have patience.
very nice person, but EXTREMELY TOUGH GRADER! her exams are straight from power points but need to memorize them word for word especially for the essays/homeworks. takes FOREVER to grade tests/hw/quizzes. pushes you to work hard, deffinetly hard class and need to spend time memorizing the material to succeed.
Great teacher, she explains everything really well. Get ready to work because her class is demanding and her exams are tough. If you study and take good notes you will be fine. If you want to learn the material she is the best person to teach it to you!!! She is awesome!!!
The tests are very hard. The questions are very tricky and if missed one word may change the answer. She does give you many chances for extra credit, even a change to add 10 points to your final as the class is very hard. She is understanding and will help only if you look for it. If it seems you have no interest she has no interest in helping you.
I took this course during the summer along with another class in addition to my job, so the workload was overwhelming-i survived. Her lectures are not reiterations of the slides, she explains material very well. You have to pay attention. She is a meticulous grader, so as a student you have to be very conscientious of your work. Worth the hard work
She is arrogant and talks a lot about herself. Test are hard, 50 plus questions and then essay questions. Don't take her, unless you like to work harder for four points than needed.
She takes forever to grade tests and homework. Like a week or more. Frustrating. Her tests are extremely hard.
ts an okay class and shes is a pretty understandable and fair grader. The one thing i liked was she pretty clearly defines whats "need-to-know" At the beginning of each section there's a list of "Objectives" if you know these down pat you should pretty much ace every test. Tests are mostly (80%) multiple choice with a few (20%)essay/short answer.
NVCC is lucky to have a professor of this caliber. Exceptional.
Really excellent teacher! If you listen in lecture and take notes you can absolutely get an A, there are no surprise questions or anything that was not clearly explained on the tests. Uses great examples and diagrams, etc. to help students learn, and includes a variety of ways to grade, not just exams. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone!
Junior with a 3.9 GPA: She makes me miss the profs at WCSU. Takes excessive points off for dumb things, takes forever to return grades and returns HW day before exam, expects you to memorize word-for-word for essay portion of tests, goes on tangents bragging about herself, ignores emails, picks favorites, unfair and subjective grading, talks down.
Prof Sackett teaches more material than other profs who teach this course. It is a lot of work but if you don't fall behind you should be just fine. Study cards are the key to her tests. She teaches from powerpoint & lists objectives at the beginning. be able to answer these objectives & you will do fine on the tests. so prepared for A & P!
Unless you can memorize her lectures verbatim, then expect to struggle for a C as the information she teaches can not be readily found. The way she taught and her attitude made it difficult to stay passionate about science. The class was structured as a proving ground to get into the nursing program and she was the gatekeeper. AVOID
BY FAR THE HARDEST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN HERE. Exams are 40 questions + 2 essays and she takes points off if you don't answer the question exactly how she wants it answered. "Study guides" are just a list of objectives and are extremely vague. I struggled hardcore to get the C I needed. Also, she's not a fan of nursing students. Avoid taking her.
Professor Sackett is a really nice lady who you can tell is very passionate about what shes teaching. However she is the hardest grader I have ever come across. Shes one of those spelling and grammar graders. Her tests are extremely tough but doable as long as study reeeeeeeally hard. If you do wind up taking her, good luck!!
1/2 Professor Sackets ratings are terrible and I dont understand why its actually scary. I took her anyways in a 5 week summer class. VERY fast paced, a lot of hard work, so much studying. Her lectures rock. She does a phenomenal job at helping you understand. Shes funny and super cool. Lab is fun. She offers extra credit, 13 pt. opportunity on
2/2 the final. Record lectures/ labs. Her tests are pure memorization with extra focus on objectives, and essays are not bad! You want to go into nursing its a great pre-req, it wont come easy, but after getting a 94 in 5 weeks, I feel like 1 million bucks! I would def. take again. AP was harder. Biggest complaint- how long she takes to grade.
One of the best professors I have had in a long time. If you want an A it's easy, just work for it. She makes Labs and Lectures really fun and interesting. She's a Microbio teacher but might as well be a life coach too. Great professor. Great class. I would recommend anyone and everyone to take her class.
Rachel was an amazing professor. I took her for my fast track 5 week Micro class. The information presented on the the powerpoints was very clear. I could tell she truly cared about how we did in the class; offering her time outside of class and study tips. The class is hard- you do need to put in the time and effort to get a good grade!
I took Prof. Sackett about a year ago for my prereq for nursing school. I forgot to rate her, but here I am graduating from nursing school. I will say she is the best teacher I have had in my whole school career. This is a class you have to give max effort for. However, she an individual who will share a wealth of knowledge andprepareyouforanything
Take her if you want to lower your GPA and delay getting a college degree! Emails/day, tough grader on a very hard subject. Impossible to get a good grade unless bio major. Nursing beware- career ruined ahead because of micro.. when all you need to know is strep, staph, mrsa, gram+gram- bact, and abx
This professor turned my love for a subject and crushed it. Its teachers like this who ruin peoples confidence in the classroom and in themselves. Dont take.
Professor Sackett wanted to be a marine biologist and instead had to settle to teach at a community college, she tries to hide how bitter she is by pretending to care about teaching and her students, when all she really cares about is herself. During COVID19 she still made us do group projects. the last week of class is two tests and a project.
I've heard before I took the class to NOT take it with her. I'm so mad I did because she is HORRIBLE. Don't take unless you don't want to pass and mess up your GPA.
Professor Sackett is the worse teacher I have had in my entire academical life! I warn you not to take any class with her because she will make your life a nightmare! She is not clear of what she is doing and assignments show up every day. She does not even announce changes in the syllabus and waits until she calculates the final grade.
I feel like I would have enjoyed the course I bit more if there was a different professor teaching it. This professor takes little account on the needs of students and likes to purposefully ignore students if there is no gain or benefit for her. She is very intelligent and I can respect that... but how she treats students is unacceptable.
I took the 5 week course and it was very difficult, but I grinded and got an A. This isn't a class you can slack off in. Stay on top of your work and ask questions! I LOVED Prof. Sackett. Her objectives match her exams perfectly, and she is very helpful if you seek her out. Lots of extra credit. Best prof I've ever had! She made me love microbio
I have never in my academic career received anything less then an A. This professor was very nice however her test were extremely difficult. I study ALOT and only received a B on one of her exams and the rest lower than a D. You will ruin you GPA.
nice but difficult 2 succeed grading heavily relied only tests and a group project w/limited guidance provided 4 studying large amt of information to absorb&few ?s to demonstrate understanding essay?s on tests were tough to earn credit on she is passionate but considering the diverse goals of students would make class more inclusive and manageable
I don't understand the negative reviews but I didn't take her for micro so maybe that's why. For genetics she told us what to study for tests and there was extra credit so they weren't too bad. Almost no homework, lots of material to learn but she made it interesting. And labs were fun. Expected the worst but I enjoyed class with her.
took the 5 week course and was horrified from the reviews, but it ended up being totally fine. she tells you EXACTLY what's going to be on the exams and drops the lowest one. this class is def a lot of work, but totally doable. im usually a bare minimum student, but wasn't for this class, but i didn't mind cuz she made the lectures very interesting
(took BIO 111) I did get credit for the class, couldn't take A&P. Assignments were easy, but there were a lot. FLASHCARDS are essential for her tests (they are multiple choice & you have to know the material well). Extra credit opportunities are available, but still couldn't get at least a C. She is nice, but her teaching is ok.
If you are applying for a selective admissions program at your school, DO NOT take this professor. I had a great gpa and studied hard, but managed to only get a C- so I ended up having to retake micro and my gpa dropped. The stuff in the powerpoints and lectures is rarely in the exams, the questions are wordy and you are expected to write essays.
Dr Sackett is one of my favorite profs of all time-she explains concepts in an easily digestible manner,&she truly cares about students. The class is not easy-its not intended to be easy bc its a sampling course, meaning you cover a LOT of topics. Really study the lectures, make flashcards (quizlet!), & you will do great; exams are MC+2 essay q's
