had no clue what she was teaching
Her tests were NO reflection of our knowledge of Biology.

I wasn't very impressed with her teaching, and the class was very hard too.
maaaaaan...work HARD for this class...
Worst teacher i have had at emory... tests do not test how much you know or how well you listened in class at all!!
Spell makes me fall asleep... her way of speaking is unbearable.

I was just like WTF every class period...
i hate that she won't answer questions if she doesn't feel like it. she'll give really snotty remarks.
Dr. Spell is very helpful. She is a great research advisor.
Made me hate bio. her lectures/quizzes/tests have not much to do with the book. you can MEMORIZE the textbook, and fail. lot of the times, her 3-chapter test concentrates on 2 pages of the entire book. her lectures are based on grade-level powerpoint where you get more info by reading the chapter summary.
wth people this class is ridiculously easy....ya'll are not studying!!
Spell's harder than the other professors, but she's a really good lecturer. I definitely recommend taking her. Also, she prepares you well for the exams (especially for second semester when the prof's write the exam together).
The class is hard but is very managable if you are willing to put the time and effort into studying. The tests do not test you on stupid plain facts that you can read out of a book. They test you on how you can apply your knowledge. She is a great teacher and I highly recommend her. If you don't like the class b/c of her voice you are plain dumb...
Dr. Spell is the best teacher in BIOLOGY 141 section. She is interesting and her lecture is visualized so that students can easily understand her materials; in addition, her lecture is well organized. Her Exams and quizzes are tricky and somewhat challenging, but if you really understand what she lectured, then it would be fine :)
She is a great professor. Having her class will be greatly beneficial
She still cannot formulate a proper question. Her exams cover useless information, and her quizzes are so convoluted that even if you know the information, you can fail. Getting an A in her class is pure luck.
She is a good teacher, because she is very enthusiastic about the material. I learned so much in her class. However, she is so damn tricky with her quizzes and exams that I still didn't ace the class. Making an A in her class is half knowledge of material and half deciphering test questions. Beware of those seemingly accurate multiple choice answer
Dr. Spell is terrific. She is demanding, but that's reasonable given the material. College Bio isn't a gut course.
Although she is not an easy teacher, I definitely learned a lot by taking her biology 141 course. I received AP credit, but I was told to take her class anyway, and I don't regret it!
tests are extremely short and difficult. thus, getting one question wrong already lowers your grade significantly.
She was NOT good at explaining difficult concepts. Her tests were extremely unfair..20 MC questions over irrelevant information. I studied very hard and was only able to pull off C in the course, even though I knew all of the information in the textbook. I don't recommend taking her for Biology 141 AT ALL.
Spell's tests are absolutely about interpreting her tricky questions. She is decent at explaining things, but overall, as the material gets more complex and the course progresses, her explanations and lecturing ability drop off. There is little room for error on her tests, which is bad news because of her tricky questions.
141 with Spell is part memorization, part figuring out what she is REALLY asking.
Let me preface this by saying I enjoy Biology and I got an A- in her class. She is a very poor test maker. She is a decent lecturer, but half of the time I spent on tests was deciphering what she was really asking me. If you're taking Bio at Emory, you shouldn't expect straight regurgitation tests, but you should be able to understand the question.
Dr. Rachelle Spell is convinced that she's asking you something you know on her tests. I wish she'd tell me what that is. In her defense, though, there are people who absolutely love her. She's a reasonably funny professor and her lessons are never incomprehensible...just her tests...
difficult/slide show is chaotic/she hates to explain questions you missed on the test/tests are primarily application and reasoning
She is loud and funny, so it's easy to stay awake. She even tells you to stay awake if she sees you dozing off. There is, however, nothing to learn from her slides and lectures. The content of her lecture is unorganized useless. She is a fair grader, because she usually drops any test/quiz questions that more than 75% of class missed or something.
She offers long office hours, but she always seemed she doesn't want to be there. To do well in her class, you must thoroughly self-teach the textbook. T(a biomentor)'s SI sessions are also helpful. He actually better explains concepts than the professor.
I had professor Spell for the whole year (for both Bio 141/142) , and she was one of the best teachers I had. Her tests are tricky, and her class requires a lot of hard work. T's (a SI leader) sessions helped a lot with her quizzes and tests, but unfortunately he graduated this year. If you really want to learn Biology well, you should take her.
Stupid professor and she is NOT hot. Office hours were useless. It seemed like her 5yr old son put together her slides 10 min before she taught the class. Read the "book" and say a prayer everyday if you have to take her. Tests were hard and the wording was incredibly confusing. Dont be fooled by her jokes in the first few days, they get WORSE
If you came to Emory for a meaningful and rigorous education, then Spell won't disappoint. The professor is knowledgeable in her field, incorporates current events, and is exceptionally helpful, if you know how to ask for and seek assistance. If you're looking for an "easy A," then Spell is not for you and, maybe, Emory isn't either.
She expects you to learn the bulk of the material outside of the classroom. She tries to win you over with her annoying, high pitch enthusiasm but loses you when you realize that she is guiding your reading, and not teaching. Her tests/quizzes are impossibly hard. She is absolutely the worst I've had. Premeds - avoid!
highly recommend not taking spell. her quizzes are hard and confusing. oh and let's not forget, her tests are even worse. and I found her voice very annoying and her jokes to be not funny at all.
I don't understand the bad ratings on here. Dr. Spell is the best science teacher I've ever had! She is funny and engaging in lecture. I can see why people get annoyed by her tests (they are short, which may seem good but it's actually frustrating b/c it's not easy to get an A) but overall the class is pretty manageable. Definitely recommend her!
She shows her passion in biology through her engaging and goofy lectures. She really knows how to draw you in. Her class emphasizes not on details but general concepts and application. I loved her class and recommend you take her. Her class consists of online homework, weekly quizzes, 2 exams, and cumulative final.
I'm not particularly strong in bio, but I found her to be pretty easy although a lot of my peers found her difficult. For her tests(all M/C) just use your best judgment and DON'T 2nd guess yourself. That worked for me. But I'm not sure if I learned the material as well as I could because I switched to Dr. P 2nd semester and I'm really struggling.
Amazing teacher. Explained things with such clarity. Tests were a bit tricky but definitely do-able by studying. Doesn't test anything that she hasn't mentioned in class. Definitely recommend her. Amazing.
She's nice and approachable! Her class is interesting, and she gives hilarious jokes sometimes. her exams are okay, not too hard and not easy, too.
Excellent teacher! I'd absolutely recommend her, especially if you're willing to put in the work. She's so enthusiastic about the material and really wants you to succeed. Her best quality is definitely her lectures, which are informative, interesting, and funny.
She's very approachable and helpful for a student's overall development. For those who dislike her because they think her course is hard, I'd say that they really did not put into much effort.
Dr. Spell makes biology interesting. When I began the class I really didn't like bio and she totally changed my mind. I'm now a bio major. She emphasizes understanding versus memorization and keeps lecture engaging. As a result, her tests may be more complicated than other into bio tests but they are LOGICAL.
Dr. Spell was one of the harder professors for my first semester at Emory, but as long as you are keeping up with the reading and asking questions, she is "alright." I still regret not doing better, but she is overall a great person- may not be the best teacher that fits your learning style though.
I don't understand why Dr. Spell doesn't have a higher rating. She is SO dedicated to her profession, ALWAYS striving to improve, funny, enthusiastic, & a great prof who doesn't care that you memorize a bunch of details, just that you understand and apply. As long as you keep up with the material and do the problem sets, you'll be fine. Loved her.
It's really hard to fall asleep in her class even though I took a morning one. She's good at making jokes that'll help you to memorize a concept, but the cost is 20 min for a thing that could be explained in 2 min. Her tests were hard and questions extremely confusing. Lecture notes are important, but nearly no textbook usage. Hard to approach.
Awful professor. At Emory there are so many better options and other professors. I have friends who took Abreu and Campbell and they said their classes are insanely easier. Spell has weekly quizzes that are impossible and she loves to be extremely tricky on her tests. Everything is super difficult, and her office hours are extremely inflexible.
Alright, well unless you are coming in with a VERY- I mean VERY good background in Bio, Spell is hard. Very hard, you can study all you want- know all the topics; theoretically you could memorize the textbook and still do poorly on her exams. She is confusing about assignments and her class has no order- if possible, avoid taking her- horrible time
Took her for my first semester Bio. Honestly, if you are taking the class yo learn the material- she's great because she will force you to learn. HOWEVER (and that is a big HOWEVER), if you are not coming in with a VERY strong background in bio, I would not recommend taking her class. Tests are extremely hard and weekly quizzes are even harder.
Spell is a very tough teacher who expects students to have an outstanding background in biology. If you memorized the book you would still have trouble on her exams. I went to her office hours three times and not only did she fail to answer any of my questions but also called me by the wrong name during class. Do not take her.
Professor Spell's class was so frustrating. She taught the class at a much lower level than she tested saying things like "you just need to glance at this" and "don't memorize" while expecting us to go above and beyond and also memorize. Completely unfair. Probably my least favorite professor so far.
Test are very difficult, mostly consist of application and not very straightforward questions. She is very helpful when you go to office hours and gives you a lot of resources to help you out, but you really have to go the extra mile to get a decent grade in her class.
Her class was sometimes interesting but most of the time it just gave me headaches. I'm decently good at science but I had to forget all my other homework and just focus on bio in order to pull a B on her tests. If you're a science wiz go for it, if not don't take her.
I actually really liked Dr. Spell. She made our early morning bio class really entertaining, and even though I hadn't taken biology since high school, I thought it was really manageable. Her class is more about application of concepts than memorization, so if that's what you're into, definitely take her.
I received a 5 on the AP Biology Test, but her class is extremely hard. Do not take her. She does not post power points online. She teaches one thing and something else appears on her exams. Her multiple choice is nearly impossible. I read and took notes on every single page of the book and still did poorly.
Dr. Spell was absolutely fantastic. I would not take her if I didn't have a strong background in biology. Her tests are mostly application based so a strong background is necessary to apply. The practice sets have a lot of the same types of problems as the tests.
Loved the class! Pay attention and read textbook, practice the problem sets and review the weekly quizzes/group assignments and you'll do great. Fair grading. Very lively lectures even at 8:30 in the morning.
Terrible terrible terrible. Not only is she worse than the other bio professors, she's also so rude. She does not care for the students and is had a strange way of communicating. Should not be at Emory
Spell was so fun and enthusiastic! I never read the book (except for carbohydrate structures), listening and taking notes in class was perfectly sufficient. Her tests are on exactly on what she lectures about and not too hard. It's a bit more conceptual which I really liked.
Honestly, she is one of the most enthusiastic teachers at Emory. With over 50 people in the class, she learned basically everyone's names. She wants to get to know you. However, I had a really hard time with her tests. If you have not had AP or have had classes that were more memory-based learning, it will be VERY hard. Her tests are DIFFICULT!
Dr. Spell's lectures are recorded so you can always go back and make sure you study the concepts she covers. Her lectures are always so engaging and lucid. Make sure to do problem sets and go to office hours. Sitting in them even without questions is the best way to absorb material because questions pop up that you wouldn't have thought to ask.
Dr. Spell is a fantastic lecturer. However, when it comes to her exams and quizzes, one can only describe it as a "?." I had great attendance to her lectures and read the textbook, but her quizzes and exams seem to not be in accordance to the work you do outside and inside class. I cannot further describe how confusing this class was altogether.
Absolutely amazing. I came in with zero (absolute nada) biology experience. However, Dr. Spell, with her passion and how understanding she is, was able to help me really understand the material. To do well you will need to put in work and must actually be able to apply material (problem sets etc); you can't simply just read, memorize and recount
I love Dr. Spell. Instead of making you memorize a lot of specific, random details, she focuses on overarching concepts which is easier in my opinion. Then, she challenges you by making you apply these concepts which is where the class can get hard if you don't take time to understand the basics. I think the class is doable if you pay attention.
Dr. Spell's Biology 141 class was the hardest class I have ever taken. She was extremely test heavy, and her teaching style was very general. With that being said, Dr. Spell is a very kind and generous person. I was dealing with personal issues during the semester, and she was right there to motivate and help.
Dr. Spell has developed a great pedagogy in challenging students for understanding biology concepts and critical thinking, which I still benefit as a biomedical researcher today (took her classes in 2011). By taking on the challenges with commitment, you will be greatly rewarded, but certainly avoid it if you are thinking of an easy A.
Dr. Spell can be a hit or a miss depending on the type of student you are, but she's very passionate about the subject. Her lectures are super helpful for the exams - make sure to pay attention. She's very caring - she took the time to learn the names of every single student in our intro bio lecture. Put in the work, it'll pay off. 10/10 recommend
She's probably the most difficult intro bio teacher. Just lectures at us the entire class. This only covers like 2/3 of the material because the rest is in the book. But, some questions on her exams seem to come from nowhere. She makes up her own scenarios and expects a level of thinking much higher than should be at this point.
I took both her Intro Bio I and II. She is so passionate about Biology that although I was a math major I spent so much time digging into the material and trying to understand everything. Biology is just interesting, and so is she. However, I wouldn't recommend if you want an easy A because her lectures have so much information.
If you are passionate about biology or simply learning in general, I highly recommend her intro bio courses. She is one of the best professors I have ever encountered at Emory and is authentically motivated to get those tough biology concepts to stick in your head. Her tests are a bit tough, but fair if you do her problem sets and attend lecture.
Dr. Spell is amazing. As a lecturer, she does more than she needs to do to make classes enjoyable and students comfortable (she learned everyone's names!!). I didn't think her tests were significantly more difficult than any other biol 142 professors but she DOES randomly call on students during lecture to answer questions.
Dr. Spell's Bio 142 is the hardest in all Bio 142. She didn't explain some the concepts in class. Also, it's hard to get all the knowledges connected together in her class. Lots of homework and discussion. Maybe it's just her teaching style didn't suit me. I took both Dr. Campbell's bio 142 and hers. I definitely recommend Campbell!
I have no idea why her rating is so low. One of my favorite teachers and the reason I am now a bio major. She goes above and beyond, standing on tables, running around the room, wearing silly clothes, ANYTHING to help you learn the material. She GENUINELY wants you to understand the concepts. Tests are difficult but not impossible. Fun & energetic.
I took her FSEM, the science of learning, and really enjoyed it. Everything was a completion grade and the topics covered were study habits, how to approach reading primary research articles, and teaching elementary school students. The curriculum was designed to best help the students and was extremely reasonable. I enjoyed having Dr. Spell.
Doctor Spell is a very good professor. She gives tons of practice. Her explanations are very clear, her classes are entertaining. She does have a problem with wording questions on exams, but she may give you points back if you explain the reasoning behind your answer. Overall, an excellent choice for your first bio prof!
Dr Spells classes are objectively difficult. That being said, she is one of the best professors Ive ever had.
Tough test, confusing as to what material we need to know
Dr. Spell is a tough professor because she doesn't want you just sitting in lectures writing down information. She wants you to apply your knowledge, which means her exams are a little harder than other professors. Take her if you really want to solidly understand the material you learn. Just be ready to do the homework and study if you want the A
Im gonna be straight with you. AVOID HER LIKE THE PLAGUE. You do not have to work this hard in 142, take another prof. Trust this review & move on. A's are common in 142, but not this prof. - The test do not make any sense. - Barley teaches the content in class - During COVID-19, opted not to teach the class but did office hours in replace of them
Dr. Spell is a genetics gem. She really cares about how much you learn inside and outside of class. While this can already be hard to do given the class size, you can still learn the proper foundations of biology. There's case studies and take-home quizzes but these help prepare you for her lectures (they're all recorded, by the way). Take her!
Truly a caring & enthusiastic prof. Learns students names in office hours and is personable. Only problem is disorganization. Questions oddly worded &misleading. Would work with students to give points back on misleading questions. Really kind at end of semester and allowed me to delay taking final due to family death. Not first choice but not bad
She is a nice instructor and will always provide you support. However, I cannot say her class was rigorous. Our exams often had flaws or ambiguity, and exam though exams are not that hard, I didn't clear expectations for her exams. Don't get me wrong, I love to work or interact with her, but I didn't feel like her lectures reached my expectations
She is kind and definitely cares for her students, but I did not learn what I should have due to her lack of organization and ambiguous tests. Her lectures became progressively disorganized and confusing over time. Her tests are full of mistakes that she does give points back for, but this didn't help the learning process. Avoid if possible.
Honestly the difficulty in this class is over-estimated. If you have a strong foundation in AP Biology you will do just fine in Dr. Spell's class (admittedly the course difficulty was impacted by COVID but still). She is super engaging and is very passionate about biology. She does emphasize some higher order bio which makes the class somewhat fun
She was not able to answer most questions that students asked, which gave the impression that she was unprepared or didn't know the material well. The wording on her tests was insanely vague and she didn't allow questions which was incredibly annoying. She was also extremely disorganized so her teaching style was just very poorly suited for me.
I honestly feel like many of the ratings on here are unfair. Dr. Spell definitely makes you work hard, but gets you to understand the material in a deeper way. You can't expect to just memorize her material and get by, she makes you think about it in a deeper way. Then again, that skill is necessary in everything we want to go onto.
How to get an A: Go to office hours, meet with the mentors, speak up in class. Understand the concepts, don't just know the facts. The outside sheets she gives end up being test questions.
If you are interested in genetics then I highly recommend taking her for intro bio
She is passionate about biology and sets you up for upper level bio classes :)
Dr. Spell is the best kind of prof ever--the one that wants you to actually understand the concepts instead of just writing them down. She prepares you for upper bio classes really well and is very caring about her students. She also shows you pictures of her dogs. This is not a class to slack off in, but if you're in for a good challenge, take it!
Her class was pretty good except that some of her test questions are confusing and contradictory to her teaching. When I talked to her about it in office hours, she refused to give up any ground even though I had reasoned with her why some questions seemed unfair.
Dr. Spell's test questions are confusing, on material we did not cover, and her grading is very harsh. As much as she claims to try to make her class a safe place to make mistakes, her actions are to the contrary - she likes to cold call students, roast them when they are wrong, and have surprise Zoom quizzes. Very helpful for my social anxiety :)
While I know this semester was hard for teachers too, she did not show us the same grace she asked of us. With vague, confusing test questions, test questions with incorrect answers that she didn't feel like fixing, pop quizzes, cold-calling, shaming, and much more, I could not imagine a more nightmare of a class. I didn't learn any genetics.
Terrible. I learned so much more from my Bio 142 class than in Bio 264. Dr. Spell was not accommodating in any sense (even tho all of us are struggling in the pandemic) and she is VERY stubborn. Her tests did not accurately represent any of the material we learned in class and her wording was horrid on tests. DO NOT TAKE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE!
Dr. Spell did not assign textbook readings or give lectures in class making it very confusing for us to know what and where to find information for class quizzes. We had to review topics on our own, but wasn't give specifics as to what extent or where to find material fit for her exams. She offers regrade requests but doesn't hear you out.
Overall experience with Spell was very frustrating. Workload is inconsistent, study guides consist of a dump of vocab on a list (half of which aren't even discussed), practice tests were not relevant to upcoming exams, and some questions on the exams were never even mentioned in lecture. She cold calls on students and can be very condescending.
This is a difficult class - only would recommend taking if you have to or if you're VERY interested in genetics and willing to put in the time. In addition, the class is quite disorganized and her tests are odd in that they don't always reflect what was taught in class. She means well, but as others have said she is condescending and not likeable
Out of all the bio profs I've taken at Emory, I loved Dr. Spell's class bc she cared the most about our well-being. This class is difficult, but you just have to put in the effort. It's also somewhat a flipped class - the prep work she assigns is background for lectures. office hours are extremely helpful as she covers more material that's on exams
I think that Dr. Spell's class really helped me learn how to apply the genetics, and effectively read papers. The tests/quizzes are a bit difficult and make you apply what's learned in the asynchronous lectures and class discussions, but if you go to office hours and study the lectures really well, you should be relatively fine!
Dr. Spell's Freshman Seminar, The Science of Learning, is extremely easy and light on the workload, yet interesting. She makes an effort to include everyone in discussions and create a sense of community in the classroom. She is a great addition to a freshman schedule if you're looking for a cushion for a smooth adjustment to college.
Words cannot describe how awful Spell's BIOL 264 class was. Her tests were incredibly nit-picky, and mind you, I had already had a solid understanding of genetics as I had taken the MCAT and got a perfect score in the Bio section. We had group projects, dry readings about biology pedagogy, and the worst part is, I felt like I unlearned genetics.
Her exams were literally so hard. There was so much material that you would never know and even after getting the right answer you still wouldn't understand. Her lectures were entertaining but did not prep you for the exams. Also, there was not enough practice material. Plus sometimes she gave conflicting info.
If you are taking her for the freshman seminar abt the science of learning ur doing the right thing. The class is largely participation-based and there are 3 relatively simple assignments due each week. She cared for each of us and was willing to spend time to listen to what we had to say. It's an easy A but she never goes back to fix grading.
Literally so inept when it comes to teaching. Her lectures had virtually no relation to what ending up being on the exams and she would just task us with random in class assignments. Was excited to take her until I stepped into the first lecture.
The only reason many people in my class did well was because of the pandemic. If we were to have done this class in person, I think most people would have failed because her lectures were not preparing us in any way for her tests. Her tests are tricky, and she offers tips on how to memorize info, but her lectures are way too fast-paced.
