He tends to put you on the spot and if you dont have the answer right away, he will get frustrated with you and will down grade you. He also tends to put you down in front of class as well.
Excellent teacher, he would never put you on the spot or humiliate you in front of the class. Nice person, donates his personal time to help us improve our conversational skills in spanish. If you want to actually learn how to speak spanish not just get an A in the class, he is the one to take.
Arias explains all, reviews HW in class to make sure everyone understands before moving on. Uncompleted HW gets a “0” – not students unable to answer a question. Has us read aloud to practice – not to put us on the spot. Hey, do the HW and be willing to try. He's great, plus you'll learn and retain.
Great teacher; sets clear expectations & study tips before tests; extends himself to students who've fallen behind - that's rare. Since class participation is part of any language class, those who come unprepared may feel put on the spot, which they can avoid by doing the homework.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Very dedicated & responsive to the needs of his students--sets clear expectations, is very thorough, accessible & helpful, & actively seeks feedback about his teaching methods; also incorporates relevant social issues into the curriculum. Highly recommended.
I beg to differ, he HAS put me on the spot in front of the class as well. He had yelled at me in front of the class due to an assignment I just wanted to check with him about and he DID humiliate me in front of the class, so I dropped him!
LAVC students... DO NOT take this guy, hes a jerk. He thinks hes gods gift to teaching, and to women.. He makes the class not interesting and turns you off of foreign (sp?) language
Dr. Arias is one of the most hardworking, genuinely caring teachers I have encountered. He is always looking for ways to improve his teaching & serve the students better, and would never think of himself as God's gift to anything or anyone (though he may well be). LAVC is blessed to have him.
Energetic, truly wants students to walk away with a knowledge of the language. Creative. You WILL be called on to speak-duh! That's how you learn language. You WILL NOT be humiliated. He knows the difference between people who are struggling and those who are lazy! Highly recommended.
Dr. Arias is both energetic and captivating. He really seems to take an interest in his students and their progress. I am taking Spanish 2 with him next semester because he made learning Spanish fun and worthwhile. I HIGHLY recommend him to anyone who wants to get the best education possible.
Dr.Arias is a good teacher, I just thinks he goes to fast. Overall it was a fun class. I enjoyed coming to class everyday.
Good professor if you want to learn and are motivated to ask questions. Do not miss deadlines; study lecture notes and the book to ace the tests.
Easiest class ever. But DR. ARIAS is so full of himself he lets it get in the way of teaching. He doesn't like to be corrected, will humilate you give you attitute& make you feel stupid. If he doesn't like you, he'll find ANY excuse to drop you. AND on top of all that,MR. PHD doesn't know his ABC's.
Those of you who write ridiculous things like, "Mr. PhD doesn't know his ABC's" don't know your ABC's either. Make sure you check your writing before criticizing a great professor. Your jealousy is very prominent. If you work, which college students are supposed to do, you will do well in his class.

I had Dr. Arias a few semesters ago and I am appalled to see that he has some bad ratings. He is an excellent Spanish teacher and really loves teaching. i have a feeling that those who dislike him are typical slacking students, expected to be handed a good grade. Arias is a great professor.

Hands down the best foreign language professor ever. Many people rate him poorly probably because they are lazy. College is about applying your self, and this is a class in which you must do so.He is extremely nice and will always take time out to help you. Don't be afraid to ask. Do the work= an A+
I agree he is a good teacher with great methods. But i couldn't tolerate the sarcasim. Usually its fine but at 8:00 in the morning it was way too much to bear. I dropped him after 4 weeks I gave it a try.
Professor Arias is by far one of the best teachers I have had. Expect to do alot of homework and assignments, but if you ask questions and do the work you will get an A. Arias is one of a few professors that actually care about the student. He helped me when I was having trouble. I give him an "A"!!
do all of the lab,hw, and the cd rom and you will do fine. HE MAKES THE CLASS FUN. he always makes you laugh. his tests are all on vocabulary, and what u did in class. by far the funniest and best teacher ever. he made my freshman year a walk in the park.BUT he does move a bit fast, even for me a NS
the best treacher ever. the class is just too easy if you follow up with it. he explaines everything clearl. always there for help. hands down its a A take his class
He's a pretty lenient teacher. He goes through everything very fast. Im a slacker, but i managed a "B" in his class, by doing half a** work. You should take him if your trying to learn spanish. I can order food in spanish now which is pretty cool.
ok its true, he does think hes the best, this is a class for people who know somewhat spanish. because i had 3 friends, who didnt know jack, and they got "D"s and me as a NS i got an A w.o trying. just study the vocab. and stuff in class, lab, cd rom quiz. try ur best, he is a bit tough, but this is a class for who want to learn, and want to study!
A great teacher. Clear lessons and fair exams. He is easy going and the class atmosphere is relaxed.
Awesome teacher. Great methods of group work and group interaction (relieves pressure of individual classwork). Interesting cultural aspects of Spain. Best spanish teacher I've ever had (out of six total).
Very self centered, always right, can not ever correct him...he'll hate on you... awful methods of teachin you're on your own in the class! BUUTTT the work is easy! Just don't get on his bad side! He'll find any excuse to drop you! HUGE TEMPER PROBLEM! Very **** and picky with whom he chooses to assist! AND EW! he's not HOT! AT ALL!
Wow-sour grapes anyone? This is not a hard class but it is 5units. That means you have to spend time on it.He gives handouts every day to keep you sharp.(so you don't get lazy and fail tests!)He's so not a hater. He cares and wants you to care too. SI was also helpful. Some of you people are pathetic whiners!
Great teacher, great class! Highly recommendet. He really cares about teaching and that we do well in his class. I liked it very much!
Just a nice teacher
Dr. Arias is honestly the best teacher I've ever had in my life,by far the best prof.at Valley. He's the most patient person I've met,& will always stay extra to help anyone that needs it, whose sincerely showing effort. As long as you show him that you're paying attention, hell for sure pass u.He even helps you on tests/midterms/finals.DEFINATELY TAK
Great teacher , easily understood although he has an accent . For a 5 unit class it is not all that hard. Study well before the tests and make sure your assighments are all correct. If you don't understand just ask for help and you will get it . Make sure you understand the previous material before moving on or you will get behind .
Cool teacher! Wants you to do well in the class, really makes an effort to make sure everybody is on the same page. Easy to talk to, Highly recommended.
Really terrific professor. I'd take a class from him again any time. Explains things really well and makes it all interesting.

he is a very stern but bendable guy. he loves to have fun with the class, but keeps order in the class. ALWAYS asks feedback about everything. Give him a chance and he will definately give u some slack, and make the semester fun and quick. tests are easy, just study the notes u wrote down. only way to pass
Terrific teacher - I wish I would have had him for Spanish 1. Very nice, helpful, and accessible.
Great Teacher! Really cares about students and has a passion for teaching
Great guy, very patient, very professional. Makes class fun by actually making fellow students speak in spanish to each other every day. Keeps order in class--does not get off subject. He is young and takes advantage of technology. Class projects are practical and you will be able to note progress throughout course. Take this professor!
Outstanding teacher! He's passionate about the language and about social issues. The text is expensive but worth it as the auxiliary materials are very helpful. You can communicate with Dr. A by internet as well as during his office hours. You read, write and speak Spanish during each class meeting. The projects are challenging and valuable.
You should be fair to all students, and give them a chance. I was upset with the class because he wants you to know spanish when you take him. He expects you to already know it??? weird way of teaching
I agree with the later comments. He puts you on the spot, and did not make me feel good about learning spanish. Makes it hard to learn spanish. Take someone who wants you to learn and excel... Not put you down.
I Speak spanish, and i thought this class was very hard. You need to know spanish if you want to take him, or you can forget about it. He's a hard teacher. Expect alot of work and homework!
Very self centered, always right, can ever correct him. Awful methods of teachin you're on your own in the class. Just don't get on his bad side! He'll find any excuse to drop you! HUGE TEMPER PROBLEM! Very **** and picky with whom he chooses to assist! He will drop you if you don't know spanish. Should be more helpful as a teacher, but he isn't.
L.A.V.C. has a weird, hard, and tuff foreign language dept...I speak and love the spanish culture, but here it's no fun, and the teachers are not helpful. I'm going to take some place else...
I agree! Don't take him
I can't belive the negative comments. I took Dr. Arias for both Span 2 and 3, and I thought he was great. He will always help you out, and is probably the only teacher at LAVC that IS ON YOUR SIDE: He WANTS you to get an A. I bet the people that wrote the bad reviews failed the class. You'd be surprised how many people can fail a do-able class.
Prof. Arias makes learning a new language more difficult then it already is. Assigns so much homework, labs, projects, tests every chapter + midterm + final. Definitely not a fun class. Not many choices in the foreign language dept though.
He is the best spanish teacher ever! Very inspirational, very passionate about his job. SUPER! SUPER nice!!
Best Spanish teacher I have had. Extremely helpful and engaging.
he's an awesome teacher. im taking him now and he's good as hell. cool guy, teaches great, and DO NOT LISTEN TO THOSE WHO SAID HE'S BAD. they're just upset because theyre lazy and dont want to blame themselves
I took him for Spanish 2, and enojyed the class. I also took him for Spanish 3 and he was a bit more strict in this class but it's understandable. He's very helpful and listened to me when I needed help. The only think I didn't like about this class is that we moved slow in the beginning of the semester reviewing and once the semester came to a clo
I took him for Spanish 1 and made an A. Super nice guy and genuinely wants you to do well. His class prepared me for Spanish 2 and I made an A. Ignore the negative comments.
Arias is one of the best teachers I have taken, not just at LAVC, but at any college. If you want to learn Spanish, don't hesitate, take his class. Arias is a top-notch professor with a real talent for teaching. We are extremely lucky to have him at LAVC.
THIS PROF IS AMAZING! I TOOK HIM FOR 5 WEEKS IN WINTER AND PASSED WITH AN 'A' SO IM NOT TO SURE WHAT EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT WHEN THEY SAY HES HARD OR HORRIBLE. HES A GREAT TEACHER AND AS LONG AS YOU TRY YOU WILL PASS THE CLASS. HES THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE HAD SO FAR AND I RECOMMEND HIM 100%. TAKE HIM.
Dr. Arias is such an awesome professor! THE BEST! He gets the entire class involved & interacting. I took him during Winter session & got an A. I'm taking him again for Span2. Just put in the effort, show him that u are there to learn & u'll get a good grade & have fun too. I strongly disagree w/all the negative comments. I highly recommend him! :)
Prof. Arias provides a wealth of knowledge and experience. He's firm yet cares about his students progress. He has a gift for teaching and it shows. His class was fun and he is adorable! Highly recommended.
He is the best teacher!!!
Very very smart prof. He really puts a lot into his lectures by creating powerpoints and slides and videos for almost every class. He sure does try and cram way too much in though. Projects, exams, and a ton of homework. Be prepared to work, but at the same time be prepared to learn the language well.
Love Dr.Arias!!! Took Span 1&2 w/him. He assigns 3 written comps, 2 projs (1 written/1 oral), online activities for each lesson, 4 quizzes, midterm & final. Sounds like alot, but it's not..it helps you practice the lang & do well in the class. Dr.Arias does a great job teaching this class by using powerpoints & videos. I hiiighly recommend him!
I am from Asian and don't know any Spanish before I took his class. Also I signed up one week late. Ohoh , but I successfully survived. I took 8:00 am class from Monday to Thursday. And I stayed in school to stay for two hours after class. He is a good teacher and definitely you need spend time to study. If you spend time, you will have no problem to get A in his class. He is a good teacher and you will not refer to take his Spanish class. I will continue my Spanish two from him too.
He is a great teacher. Very helpful. Whenever someone makes a mistake he responds with ay yi yi yi yi yi yi. When I was having trouble, he helped me out. Although I knew a bit before I joined his class, I'm learning a lot more. I definitely recommend this class
The most amazing professor at LAVC. He was such a sweetheart. He was very crystal clear and everyone knew what his expectations were since day one. He provided a very comfortable environment that allowed all his students to participate. His lectures are very engaging. Thank you professor!
Dr. Arias is very enthusiastic with his teaching. He makes sure that his students are on track and are having fun at learning Spnaish. Great Prof! Study :)
The best professor ever!
One of the best professors I've ever had. He really wants you to learn and cares about his students.
Best professor ever. I took Spanish 1 with him.It was hard but interesting. I got an A. Love, love, love him.
I wish Professor Arias taught Spanish 02! He will challenge you to use Spanish in creative ways and it's not a class you can coast through, but the expectations are laid out from the first day of class. The last time I had a Spanish class was 6th grade, but I got by and ended up with an A!
One of the best professor I have ever had very helpful. He will take the time to explain if you do not understand. His class is easy to pass if you keep up with the homework and super site. Highly recommend
He is the most organized teacher I have had this year for example, he will email your our homework assignments daily. In his class, he would assign a lot of homework on Super site, workbook and textbook. He expected the best from his students. Make sure to stay on top of your classwork. Its not an easy A. Awesome Teacher!!!
Dr.Arias is a passionate professor who cares about the success of his students. He is dedicated to teaching and is very clear from the beginning of his expectations from you as a student. He does assign a lot of homework and online homework but trust me if you attend class everyday, participate in class and do the homework you will pass his class.
Prof. Arias is a wonderful Teacher ! I learned plenty from his class. He makes sure everyone understands and cares a lot about his student ! I recommend him to anyone who is trying to take Spanish 1 or 2 . He's great ! I love professor Arias !!!
Prof. Arias is great! Very organized clear and helpful. Learning a new/different language is no easy task but with Arias you learn so much and he keeps the class interesting. I definitely recommend him.
Professor Arias is one of the best professors I've ever taken. He's very organized, and emails you exactly what you need to know for the tests. Patient and has a great sense of humor! I personally learned a lot. If you do the work and come to class everyday then you should do fine. Highly recommend!
Outstanding Professor, I took Spanish 1 and I am thrilled by his dedication towards students. He gives 100% and expects 100% back, the best strategy ever! Prof. Arias is very professional and very clear with his assignments. Highly recommended for serious students, if you are not...then don't occupy the sit and don't waste time!
I am an older, serious student and took this class to learn Spanish. Do not take it unless you know Spanish. I dropped his class after 4 frustating meetings.
I believe he is one of the better professors in the language department. The class is fun, and the assignments are all so simple, yet helpful. I learned a lot about different cultures as well. He makes it pretty easy to pass the class so if you did well in span 1 you should be fine. We even sang songs! I'm looking forward to taking span 3 w/ him
Doctor Arias is a great professor.
Great Professor!
Dr Arias is an amazing professor. He does expect you to work, but he gives you every single tool that you need to succeed and learn in this class. He is very sharp, very kind and very funny. Expect daily homework, but there is absolutely nothing he wouldn't do to help you or make sure that you understand the material. Would take over and over.
He's fun and really helpful. Failed this class bec of poor attendance (personal and health issues) but definitely taking him again!
It's not an easy A, by any means - you do have to study and write and put in the work. But Professor Arias is such a sweetheart that you don't even mind. He is very helpful, always kind even when students make mistakes, and we talk about very interesting real-world issues in the class. Be sure to speak up in class and talk to him if you're lost.
Dr. Arias is an excellent teacher who is always ready to help a student. This class starts out pretty easy, but by the halfway point you will be in trouble if you aren't keeping up with the homework. His tests aren't that hard, but you need to know the material reasonably well and participate in class. You'll get a grade you deserve or better.
Never answered my mails. Kind of rude.
If you really want to learn, you can't do better than Dr Arias. Don't even think you'll be the hardest working person in his class. Dr. Arias is the hardest working person wherever he goes. He creates a great deal of his own course materials. He answers emails so fast, I swear he sits around waiting for them. Enjoy the class! You will learn a lot!
He is a pretty good teacher, but he goes absolutely too fast for the average person to catch on to what he's teaching. He gives an unusually heavy amount of homework and reading. He doesn't like too many questions, it seems to annoy him. If he would slow down, and maybe listen to his students needs a bit more, he could be more effective .
I am very happy that I found him the very good professor you have to study and an A is yours. I will definitely take his, class, again. You have to study the vocab, reading, verbs conjugations to read a book in Spanish Thanks professor see you next semester
An excellent teacher who gives all that he can to see that his students succeed. He cuts a lot of slack but still makes you work for your grade. As long as you come to class, do the assignments, and study the material you can't help but do well in his class.
Great teacher. If you dont understand something he explains it or makes time to explain it. Gives quite a bit of homework but if you focus you can be done in roughly an hour. He teaches a bit from powerpoints but also uses the book and other materials, he really wants you to learn. He covers a lot so attendance is for your own good. Great teacher!
Great professor that's passionate about teaching the material. Uses powerpoints, book, supersite, and activity handouts. All the handouts must be printed out at home at your own expense. Course work load is heavy: book work, supersite activities, reading a different book, handout activities, term papers, and 15 minute oral presentations in spanish.
Definitely an awesome professor. Approachable, kind, and dedicated. HOWEVER, he expects a ton of effort from the student. There's textbook homework, online homework, worksheet homework, reading comprehension homework, oral project power point report presented to the class in Spanish. You'll need lots of Dedication to the class in order to pass.
You definitely got to put in work to get a C or better. So much work to do that he had to omit one of the quizzes and a spanish movie project. And even then, there was still so much to do. Oral research project presentation is hard. Has to be presented all in spanish, reading from paper not allowed. He is good teacher but to much work.
Worst professor I have taken in the short span that I have been in college. He ran through lectures like the world was going to end and expected you to know spanish before you even took the class. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM!
really hard class, he expects you to know everything he makes you writhe 200-word essay in midterm and final. If you don't speak Spanish you will not pass his class
I had a very long break from Spanish before jumping into this class, and it was a TON of work. We had essays to write, an essay and a book project due in the same weekend, an oral presentation (another reviewer said you can't read off a sheet, but I pretty much did and I got an A on that.) But this was good practice. He's a very funny person too.
I tested into Spanish 3 after a long hiatus of studying Spanish in high school. Professor Arias was actually the one that administered the placement test for me and was very helpful, going as far to lend me the book for Spanish 2 to review. His class isn't easy and his lectures are given in Spanish, but just do the work and review the lessons.
Dr. Arias is an excellent teacher, and his lectures are amazing. If this is not your major, then of course you would not love his class. I struggled, but with 1 on 1 meetings, he was very helpful. If you don't come to class, then that's your problem.
