He is a laid-back teacher which makes him very approachable when you have a question! Just do your work and you'll be good!

He's a caring, interesting teacher with high ideas and a clear way of teaching that grabs your attention immediately. He doesn't waste time and focuses on the assignment unlike other professors. His assignments are clear and reasonable.

Great teacher! Lots of quizes, but only to keep you on your toes. Grade is off papers. Took him for 1302 and muticultural literature made it interesting. Just participate and read and you'll be fine.

Most dynamic professor I've had at Palo Alto. He is a credit to the teaching profession. Don't miss class if you can help it, but you won't want to miss it! He really makes you think and if you keep your head in what you are doing you will make a great grade and come out at the end with a new appreciation of different forms of literature!!!!

He's a really funny laid back kinda guy. After you read the stories he goes over them but tells them in his own interesting and funny way. Wise teacher, knows his stuff! You WON'T fall asleep in his class!

Love him! I love that he makes you think about things from a different stand point. Likes lots of involvement. Don't take this test if you don't like to talk in class. Love him!

Read five books for class and took objective exams; five out of class essay (all typed). He is a task-master, fun to learn, easy to understand, not pompous like other English profs, and down-to-earth. Oh, his published a lot.

The first week is the hardest, he seems very mad and irritated, but that's just a front to keep people who don't really want to be in class to drop. He shows lots of movies and you write 3 five page papers. He takes care of his students and loves to hear your opinion and doesn't judge you. I enjoyed Mr. Castillo's class, very interesting!

STUDYING WAS NOT REQUIRED BECAUSE IT WAS EASY TO GET DRAWN INTO THE DISCUSSION AND SOME COMMON SENSE HELPS TO GET AN "A".

great teacher get's you into the subject at hand, makes it fun and interesting, three 5 page essays just do work and get good grade, don't drop once in it's not that hard but not the easeist,

He's hard, he's good, and he's fair. You write about four essays about 7 pages apiece with MLA documentation.

Learn a lot about Egyptian and Sumerian civilizations. Great lecturer, a lot of reading, many presentations. Keeps you on your toes

He was extremely funny and i loved that he valued your opinion, he made you question everything, did a presentation for the final, but he is hard but in a good way

I love, love, love this teacher. He is the best English teacher I have had since starting at PAC. He explains everything to you so that you understand it.

Class participation is a must; you have to read or you will not pass. Evening courses can some times be mundane and boring. Everyone is tired and the last thing you need is some one who cannot maintain class participation. Dr. Castillo does not do that,he is a professional but knows when to cut loose and interjects satire at the appropriate moment.

Dr. castillo is a great teacher. he'e enthusiastic and understanding. you do have to go to his class or you will miss something but will help you understand better.. you write 2-4 essays but they are kind of long for ex. 3-6pgs depending on what he's feeling. reminds me of george lopezz.. overall i would take him again!!

I really enjoyed taking English 1301 with him. Sometimes he is kind of unclear about what your actual assignment is, but if you ask him he explains more in detail. He puts on a big act during the first couple of classes and acts like he's going to fail everyone, but in the end he gives you plenty of chances to make up missed work. Taking him again.

Lots of long essays and poem analysis. But then most English profs will give a loy of elaborate work. Hes helpful but tough. For the exams over specific storys, read!

Dr. Castillo is a very good teacher. His class is very interesting, and he is very enthusiastic. I thought his class was easy, he gives more than enough time to finish the essays. I learned a lot. We only had 3 essays in the whole semester.

Awesome teacher. He is very helpful, and will make you question everything. Always open to discussion and debate in class. The papers are not hard if you pay attention. He is willing to work with students if they show concern for the class, but if you come across as lazy and expect to be able to turn in late work, think again! Take him, he's great!

Very easy!!Attendance a must or you will miss out. Must pay attention to the details in the discussion and class participation will help when you need ideas to write your 3 6 pg analysis. He is more than willing to help but you must ask for help. This will not be a boring class it will be fun!!!!

Mr. Castillo was a great instructor. He keeps the class interesting. In all we wrote a total of four 5 page papers, and had an additional assignment of journals. Journals were due at the end of the semester. I highly recommend Mr. Castillo, he will prepare you for the upper level English class.

Dr. Castillo was an amazing professor. His class was not boring and consisted of alot of crtitical thinking; which in the end all class discussions were meant to help with the assignment. And they did just that they made writing fun; and I'm the type of person who would avoid writing at all expense Dr. Castillo is the person to go to always helpful

Mr. Castillo is a great instructor. I just took my 1302 English in a flex seesion, and it wasn'bad at all.I took Mr. Castillo for 1301 English as well. In his 1302 English there was 2 exams, but not that difficult. It is easy to earn an A if you do the work.

Dr. Castillo is astute in his professio; he challenges you analyze and write your best work; he enjoys the students comments and different opinions, so you cannot be shy; the more the students speak up, the more you learn. Dr. Castillo is very helpful and will explain things twice if necessary. Read the stories and always have your book with you.

He was a very helpful instructor and he knows what he is talking about. you will also become a better writer, but the only problem i had with him was that i got all 90's on my writing assignements but yet i got a C in the class overall. He plays his favorites though so really read your assignents carefully. Take another instructor!!!!

If you are willing to learn this is the type of professor you want. He's demanding but fair. What he loves more than anything is for you to participate in class. I highly recommend this class for anyone but especially if you are an english major. I would definitely take another class that he teaches should it be available.

This professor was actually my inspiration to become an English minor. He helps you if you ask. He is very enthusiastic of your opinions and work. I highly recommend taking him.

This professor is the way to go! He made English interesting, and he always accepts late work. (Even though the first day of class he said he doesn’t) He helps out anytime you need it, and will talk about interesting things you bring up. He encourages debating in class, and genuinely enjoys any input you put towards debates and or lectures.

Very interesting class. Doctor Castillo is not an easy class if you decided not to do anything or turn in essays you will fail this class so if you are one of those students who want it easy then I suggest you not to take him. In the other hand if you love to discuss topics and have debates with the class, Mr. Castillo won't let you down.

He cares about his students and is willing to help. 2 tests (each with an essay), 3 essays, no midterm, final with 20 something questions and 2 essays. Try not to miss class! Loved his class!

This is the best instructor I have ever taken in my life. He was super helpful, and understanding. I love this teach so much! I wish i could take him for more classes. I've never experienced such a superior professor at PAC. I highly reccomend taking this professor over any other one. BEST PROFESSOR EVER.

Great professor! Essays are the toughest part but he gives you enough time and tells you everything you need to know on how to write a superb essay. Essays count for 2 grades. He's super funny and keeps you interested. Definitely would take again.

Dr. Castillo makes it very easy to interpret the reading assignments. He enjoys asking students for their own interpretations on the assigned literature. He is pretty lenient in his grading and will clearly explain what he wants a student to improve upon with hisher writing. Prepare to learn how to properly cite your sources using MLA!

This class is an experience for the rest of your college life. Dr. Castillo is a great teacher and very influential. Also next semester you do not need to buy the book save money,!!!

Professor Castillo has a contagious passion that helps bring the words on paper to life. Hes always positive and challenges students from all academic backgrounds to try their best. My writing has improved dramatically in a short period of time due to his clear instructions.

I took him during summer and although it was fast paced, he was very helpful. Make sure to pay attention when reading plays or stories. If you do that and pay attention in class you'll do great! He makes class interesging and fun! English was always my worst subject but I wish I would have had him for english1301. I would definitely recommend him!

Dr. Castillo by far has been the best teacher ever.. He is a hard grader and you do have to read a lot but if you pay attention to what he reads you'll pass. Essays are worth 2 grades, test are usually fill in the blank or characters match. It's not an essay A, so work on your essays early and also read your stories he gives you!! He's wonderful!!

Mr. Castillo is a wonderful, easy going professor. Expect to write papers. There is a lot of reading so time management is key. The quizzes are pretty easy if you follow the reading material and keep up with the syllabus. He is a very inspiring individual and is quite a character. I really enjoyed this class. I definitely would recommend him.

I enjoyed the fascinating lectures and the structure of the class that allowed for small group discussion and immediate feedback. Unlike online classes (which are a ripoff), this class allowed me to think outside the box and make contributions that gave me a sense of progress and belonging. I transferred from Northwest Vista to Palo Alto!

Rafael Castillo is a great instructor, he helped me look at the bigger picture when it came down to analyssing films in class, he made us really think of the diferent psychological aspects as to why things happened in the films and was truly inspiring to learn how to break it down and get inside the characters minds. I highly recommend taking him!

He is by far the best professor at Palo Alto College, so many others need to learn from him. He has amazing lectures with so much background information, you actually learn in his class and its fun at the same time. I've taken his engl 1301, and 1302 and humanities class and all were so well done.

Dr. Castillo is a gem. He uses close reading analysis and really tough objective exams. Even though he is difficult and hard, the course did teach me much about persistence and endurance. I learned more in his class than I had the last few years.

I took Professor Castillo for English 1302 two years ago, and I'm an English major. I transferred to UT-Austin and actually applied all the principles he taught us in his class--literary theory, close reading analysis, and even my specialty, postcolonial theory. I wrote my honors essay on Americo Paredes's "George Washiington Gomez".

This is class is an easy A if you pay attention to what you're reading. Some people said it was difficult. He's funny and loves his job. You write about 5 papers, and the test are difficult. You need to memorize lines that were said in the readings, but he doesn't tell you exactly what. If English is your major, take him.

I took him because my father and mother took him about twenty years ago. He's amazing. I truly enjoyed the group projects, field research interviews on poets, and writing the research paper, which was accepted by a peer-reviewed journal.

Amazing instructor, teaches the hard materials in easy ways to understand. Be prepared for essays. Make sure you read the stories assigned as though it will be covered in tests. He can be a little disorganized, but I would recommend writing down what your assignments are in case you forget, he doesnt post on Canvas.

Dr. Castillo is an amazing teacher. took him for Comp 1302 summer 2018, everyday class was fun and interesting and makes the stories we read a little less boring. wrote two essays during the semester and got A's on both. he always says no answer is ever right or wrong. TOTALLY RECOMMEND. specially for summer class quick and easy. GREAT PROFESSOR!!!

I have never been a fan of English and I credit Dr. Castillo for the change of heart. His lectures and interaction with students are amazing. He truly cares for his students. Just do the work and hang in there you wont regret it.

DR. Castillo is a great teacher who will help you think critically. He encourages us to be the best we can be, as long as we put the effort into our work, and try. He can be challenging but he well respected.

He's a professor who knows how to teach without making the class boring. We read three books he asks you for five, he only gives you 3 essays to do during the whole semester and they have to be 5 pages long. The rest is easy and fun.

I was told he was very hard but very good. My friends recommended him because I needed someone who is not boring. Or will put me to sleep. He was very interested but his objective exams were difficult. I did survive. Would I take him again? Of course!

Very cool teacher, made me like literature. He brought the best essays out of me and taught me how to critically think. I really enjoyed his class. He made us do 3 essays that he helped us with THOROUGHLY and helped us reach our peak writing skills. The time between essays were fun and filled with great discussion. I highly recommend his class :)

I took him for humanities 1301 His lectures are interesting and you can tell he is passionate on what he teaches. Throughout the semester we only did 3 exams, a PowerPoint, and a 10 page paper on a specific topic. Very easy class. Dont worry about the paper its basically just putting the information from your PowerPoint into an essay. Great guy!

I took Dr Castillo for summer one during Covid. LOVED his class. 3 short critical analysis papers and easy tests and quizzes. Lots of reading but he mostly reads everything during class time so you learn how to read and truly analyze correctly. You can tell he really cares for his students. ParticipationExtra Credit! He replies within The same day

One of the best professor I had this past semester on Zoom. He lectures clearly, gives all students a chance to participate, and encourages students to achieve greatness. I noticed that he is probably the only professor that does not use books but OER material available free online. I did not buy a single book. His tests are difficult but fair.

Professor Castillo is an energetic professor who cares about teaching. It's important to note that this class is mainly about listening to lectures and interpretation of those lectures, more than any sort of practical learning of English skills. 2 papers of 6.5 page length, and a few multiple choice tests. Easy class, but must be present in-person.

Professor Castillo is truly passionate about English and anything regarding poems, drama, and non fiction. He helps you when you are trying to write your essays, and if you have any questions or problems he would gladly give you suggestions and feedback. He doesn't reply late to your E-mails and communication is key if you wanna pass. No late work!
