A great teacher. He's funny, he makes the subject interesting, and he explains the concepts clearly. He also e-mails you a study sheet shortly before the test. I found this to be a very useful study guide. He also clearly has a love for his chosen field.
This guy was very harsh and strict. He was far from pleasant, and I sensed some Misogyny. His class is very difficult, but the man does know his Science. If you are not a Science major, I suggest not taking his class.
He is a great teacher, funny, lectures are not boring subject even more interesting, and explains the concepts clearly. He was a very good teacher to me. Hey "Misogyny" person: maybe he just didn't like YOU! He likes his 'A' students!
He was a great instructor that will interact with any student that trys or needs help. He does best with those that are trying in the class. Ask him about his tiger story, hilarious.
Super teacher! Creative and funny. This teacher knows and loves his discipline. His expectations of students is high and that's why you leave his class energized and smarter.
Can't even speak clear english. Hard to understand.
This teacher may be difficult but you will definitely get something out of it. He is in no way biased by gender my honors section had 7 females and 3 males, we ended up with 5 females and 0 males at the end. He is wonderful.
He sucked and had really hard tests.
Very strict, and tests are way hard! He loves Biology and its obvious, but doesn't realize that most people have other things going on in their life than his class! Take a different teacher!
Hard to understand what he's saying at times, and it's lecture after lecture after lecture. . .so that hurts a little bit.
takes too seriously
Funny guy but he has the worst temper ever. Feels like he puts you down if the test average for the class is below average. Overall, this is a very stressful class. I could only understand about 30% of what he was talking about.
This class is challenging but it is ver informative. He gives you study guides for each chapter that has all the material that is on the tests and he discusses everthing in his lectures. As long as you show up for lectures, labs, and study with the study guide you will do fine. He is willing to help you in any way if you are willing to try.
Tough, but fair. One of the few classes in which you have to earn your grade, and alot of students dislike him for it. Great sense of humor, though. You'd know that if you heard any of his stories.
This class will wake you up if you think college is a breeze. It can seem impossible if you don't study adequately. This class prepares science majors for the upper level rate of learning. He won't bore you.
This class is challenging, but not impossible. Dr. Kannan is a fair teacher who explains his points very well. Although he is a good instructor, he is very opinionated. Don't let it rub you the wrong way.
Funny guy, but his class is difficult. Make sure to study more than once before the test. Know everything on the study guide. If you do that you should be fine.
Dr. Kannan is extremely good at explaining things in his lectures. The class is hard, but Dr. Kannan is willing to help you if you are truly interested in learning. He takes learning very serious. His classes are fun and hard.Listen to his lectures, study his chapter guides and pray!, and you will be fine.
He was extremely unhelpful. He would not answer questions saying that he "didn't have the time". He was condscending when you didn't understand.
Nerds are hot... This is a hard class, but it is what classes at REAL universities are like. Show up, shut up and wirte down everything he says. Go to your labs, all of them. Basically, be an adult and act like it. Be respectful. If you listen carefully, you'll adjust to his accent easily. A great influence and excellent role mdoel.
Dr. Kannan is an intelligent guy. This is an excellent intro for a science major. He's definitely one of the easiest science teachers I've had. Probably seems a little too much for a non-science major. He gives you all the info you need and you just have to learn how to know the material from all angles.
Very helpful
Kannan is the best! Seriously, there is a reason why he has won so many teaching awards. He takes his teaching very seriously. He loves what he does and it shows. I'd sign up for every class he teaches if I could. You get used to the accent very quickly.
He is the best!
He makes fun of you if you answer a question wrong in class. He will not help unless you ask and ask. He really don't like cell phones so don't have it on you.
Hm..I am not sure why Kannan was rated high by others. I had him for Biolab and he was a jerk most of the time. He made fun of people for asking simple questions and was very condescending and unapproachable. His tests were difficult. He acted as if he was lowering himself to talk to you- he didn't want to be there. I would NEVER take him again.
didnt really care for him, very hard, in my opinion
I had Kannan for lab & I loved him! He was a lot of fun. We only had 2 test the whole semester where as some Lab teachers gave a quiz every class. I made a high A without much effort. Just listen and write down everything he says and you will be fine. I would definitely suggest him for Lab.
Dr. Kannan is an excellent teacher if you're in his class to learn. Show him respect (no cell phones, no sleeping) and he'll do the same to you. Although he could be condescending at times, it was only to people who weren't really paying attention in the first place. Exams are multiple choice for the most part with reviews sent to your email.
Dr. Kannan is an amazing teacher. He's helpful, jokes throughout the entire class, and honestly wants his students to learn the information they're being presented instead of just temporarily memorizing it for a mediocre grade. The only time he's rude or unhelpful is when he can tell a student or the class has not read the material.
I had this teacher for both lab and lecture. I personally did not care him. In lab, just as others have said, he belittles people and makes them feel stupid for asking questions. His tests are extremely hard. I felt as though he treats females bettr than males. I would never take him for another class, and recommend people to not take his class
Great professor!
This guy is awesome! I wish that every Prof was like him. There is no BS in this class. You are not given a grade, but are expected to pay attention, study and learn. He is the type of Prof that I desire to be in a few years.
Dr. Kannan is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He jokes around in class and helps you to make connections so that you remember things more easily. He gievs out bonus opportunites, and he also sends you a study guide about a week before each test with everything you'll need to know. I advise everyone to take him at some point. EASY A!!
Great professor! I took his lecture class on line. He posts his lectures so you can listen to them at your convenience. He gives good examples and analogies so it is easier to make connections and remember the material. He has a little bit of a sense of humor. I also had him for lab. He was always was respectful and never belittle anyone. I was app
Go to class, takes notes and you will pass. A "c" is easy to get. You will have to work for an "A"
Great instructor, loves his field. Use the study guides and there is no reason you should not pass.
The man is extremely rude to students, however, you will learn valuable information because of him. He is very intelligent. It is difficult to receive an A (must work for it) but almost impossible to fail (D or lower). Would recommend over most instructors, but Amos/Lightener over him.
Dr. Kannan is knowledgeable and wants his students to succeed. He is funny but demanding. You will have everything you need to be successful, he has reviews posted online and gives specific answers.
He can be rude at times, but as long as you come to class prepared and ready to learn, he is a very nice guy. All he wants to do is help students learn. He is very passionate about what he does. I highly recommend taking him.
I learned so much about biology during this class. His tests did not reflect that though. They are very difficult. I ended up with a B, which I was happy with considering how many people dropped the course or received even lower grades. Do not leave your cell phone on. If he catches you on it or it goes off, he takes points off of your grade!
He seems like a total jerk, but if you make an effort, he is very nice. He knows his biology and can be funny. Gives study guides for the tests. You have to put in effort and act like an adult in his classes or he will embarrass you.
He was pretty helpful for me and responded to emails in a timely manner. He gives you study guides that if you bother to do will almost certainly grant you an 'A' on the test. I'd take him again.
Dr. Kannan is a great teacher!! No nonsense, respects the fact that people have paid for his class and wants no disruptions from cell phones or tardiness. He gives out study guides and is always available in his office if you need help. He was very helpful with advice on my career path, I highly recommend him!!!! Made biology FUN!!
I took Dr. Kannan's online biology class and it was great. He loves what he does and it shows. He answered every email I sent fast and he even records his lectures for you to listen to. This was really helpful because he goes over everything that will be on the test. Great Teacher!
I took him for online Biological Science. Granted I am a bio major but his class was still super easy. He tapes all of his lectures and gives you a study guide to follow along with. He uses the book a lot, which I liked, but honestly you didn't need it. Everything he tests you over is in the study guide. Looking forward to Ecology with him.
Dr. Kannan is very knowledgeable about biology. He delights in passing along his knowledge to students. He has a keen sense of humor. I would definitely take another class with him. Hes a credit to the University.
If you listen to the lectures and do the study guide you will do good on the test. Just make sure to really know the material inside and out. The downside is that the only grades in the class are 4 tests. So if you fail 1 test, then there's no getting the grade back up unless you do amazing on the others.
No homework in this class, but if you don't get a good grade on test its a hard class. If you rely on homework grades don't take this class.
Really is a good professor but he knows the class is hard and expects you to drop out or get a C at the most. So thats irritating but if you really need help he is happy to get it.
Its an easy class as it should be but he can be kinda rude. He made a girl cry most of a class this semester and when he tried to apologize it sounded like he made fun of her. He is super smart but sometimes he makes you feel stupid if you give the wrong answer.
Do not take this class if you are not a good test taker. The only grades you get in this class is 4-5 quizzes and 2 exams. Other than that, there are no possible grades. Forgetting your lab book or skipping class could result in being dropped from this course. Difficult class!
Dr. Kannan is a great professor. He is very smart and loves what he does.
He lectures out of the book, so dont forget it. We rarely got out of class early. He gives extra information that is important on the test in class, so dont skip. He is willing to help you if you go to him and ask for it.
Dr. Kannan has been teaching here for 26 years. He is very passionate about biology and has a wonderful sense of humor. The course is easy if you just show up and pay attention. He does require a text book and the tests are mainly based off of that. He will also give other information that is not in the book. There were 4 tests and no other grades
Dr. Kannan is a passionate professor who wants you to learn and understand the material. His lectures are clear and entertaining, he uses analogies to help. The only grades in class are 4 tests, which are multiple choice but he does give out bonus point opportunities. The tests aren't difficult. Make sure you read the book and study. Easy A!
I only had him for like a month and I liked the way he taught. He tried to get all students' attentions and tried to explain the lesson in his own words. He drew diagrams and wrote on the board for us to explain things. For our exams, he would let us know what we needed to study for the exam. You miss class, you miss his jokes.. and some rudeness..
I took him for biology online. You have 4 exams only, no homework, or any other stuff to do. Just listen to his lecture online and take the exam by a certain date. He does give extra credit alot! He gave an EXTRA 5% to each of our exam because he knows it's a required class for all majors. I had a D, but he bumped it up to a C!
Might not be a bad instructor in person, completely ignores his online students. Promised us that we could retake the tests and then refused, then promised extra work to make up for the supposed miscommunication on retaking tests. Extra work was never given and when asked he wasn't exactly kind about it and refused. Totally not having a good time.
Generally disinterested in his students. There solely for fruitless research.
If you have to make an appointment during his class period or have an emergency you better have someone else take care of it or schedule later because he berates you for leaving early after signing in to class which he does in front of the whole class. Like dude we pay you and we are adults. Shouldn't be told we are cheating by leaving early.
He asked me what I wanted to be, so I told him. Then he laughed in my face and said, "Good luck with that."
I liked him because he's a good lecturer but that's it. I'm not a good test taker and its based on 4 tests. I went to him about it and he told me to retake the class, he offered no help beyond that. I feel like he's passionate but doesn't care for his students unless theyre outstanding. He will single you out in class and isnt very nice.
This class had to be one of the hardest classes I have ever had to take throughout my whole college career. I struggled throughout the whole year. You could study so much for it but it still was not enough. The exams were nothing compared to what was on the tests. He only has 4 exams throughout the year, so you better hope you pass them all.
Dr. Kannan is a complete jerk & doesn't care about his students. I made all As this semester and had one C, which was this course if that tells you anything. Half of the class dropped his course & only 2 ended with A's (one of them was ONLY taking that class). The course was about evolution and other easy subjects, but he makes it SO difficult.
The hardest prof I've had by far. Goes by the textbook and lectures with occasional videos. Has 4 exams + 1 final - grades are only based on these. Uses everything in textbook for exams - from graphs to small side captions. His exams are divided in open responses and multiple choices. Difficult both in and out of class. WOULD NOT TAKE AGAIN.
Overall not a bad class. Classes are all lecture and the book is really important, he refers to it a lot. Grade is based on only 4 exams, but gave us several extra credit opportunities. Each exam is 50 multiple choice so it wasn't too bad, but I would study. You can tell he really cares about his field, and he's kind of funny too.
You only have four test. That is how your class pretty much is going to go and the extra credit is like 15% on your test if you register the test early. Your going to need a textbook. Just focus on doing well on your test because that is your grade. You do not get any homework if that is what you might like. Just focus on doing good on the test.
The worst
Dr. Kannan is a wonderful professor. He loves biology and is very kind and caring The online course grade consists only of 4 tests, so that was a bit stressful at first, but he gives chances to get some extra points on some tests. If you're in the online class you must carve out time to listen to his lectures and follow in the text book.
Kannan was out of the country due to the pandemic and never once answered any emails. I even emailed other professors in order to reach him, nothing. It's four tests. that's it. fail the first one you are screwed. give you a minimum of 20 videos, 20-30 minutes long each chapter and two chapters a test. would NEVER recommend
I took freshman BIOL with Dr Kannan back in 2013 and still to this day 2021 tell stories of some of his lectures. I have never had a professor stick with me like this guy. He is passionate and knows his stuff; when teach knows his stuff it makes learning easy. He engages with everyone in the room and is sure to keep you engaged. 9/10
I guess after COVID he changed, you can tell this man has passion for science. I missed an exam because i was sick. When i asked to retake it, he wouldn't even let me finish my sentence. I work full time and dont have time to listen to online lectures he should be teaching in class. When i emailed him telling him im having trouble, he did nothing.
I spent 80% of my time studying for this class. He didn't really teach much in class, we were supposed to listen to the lectures on blackboard on our own time, and then we would "discuss" it in class. Usually stayed in there for no more than 30 minutes. You also only have 4 grades the whole semester. It is doable but you have to work really hard.
The class was fairly easy if you made sure to watch the videos he has recorded and ones that were Bio interactive videos over the material. There is a 100% chance there will be questions over the videos. He gives about 5 bonus questions on the exams too, which is nice. The only thing I didn't like was only being in class for 30 minutes at most.
I was highly disappointed. There was very little to no interaction with the class, unless he was telling us he expected us to do poorly on tests, or not to get confident about doing well on the test he said we would do poorly on because the next one would be much harder. We pay a lot of money to be TAUGHT things, and he definitely did not teach.
Dr Kannons class was actually really fun! He gives you a study guide of everything you need to know so as long as you watch the videos and do the review sheet you will ace the tests!
He was a little rude to some students but it's hard to tell when he is being sarcastic. His study guides are nothing like the tests so don't rely on them too much. As long as you take notes in class, you should be fine.
When a professor puts something on the Test Review, but doesn't teach about it in class and has no materials covered on it, I would not take him. Granted he may give some extra credit, but it won't be enough to make a difference. Take your own risk in this class.
Dr. Kannan was amazing! As long as you care about your grade and show up to class, the class is easy. He posted the lectures online, but showing up to class was still just as important. In class, Dr. Kannan went over the material in more depth and frequently gave extra credit for attendance. Almost all of the grade is on the exams, so study hard!
Dr. Kannan is one of the best professors in the biology department. If you study and attend class you should be fine
I would not personally take this class... Tough grader and he's pompous! Poor treatment Condescending Theatrical ....no no no not ever again Drains the life out of Makes the material boring and not worth giving thought to
Dr. Kannon seems very passive aggressive and condescending in his emails. The only true grades were four test worth 100 points each but to be completely fair he does give a few extra credit opportunities to help with your grade. I would say if you're not generally good with sciences to avoid this class because the tests are very hard and heavy.
This professor puts up recordings of him teaching his in person class, I suppose, where he literally just reads from the book. Then there's a study guide that doesn't seem to have much to do with the test. Then the Tests. The tests are the only way to get points.
Absolutely do not take this class if you have ANY doubt about your knowledge in science! I almost lost a scholarship over this 1 class after studying for HOURS for the tests. May I mention the ONLY grades were the tests!
I never write reviews but I recommend not to take this class if Biology isn't your major. The whole class consists of 4 exams and the exams are not easy at all. This class is the hardest class I have taken so far as I am struggling to get a passing grade in the class. Sure he gives extra credit but it doesn't help as the class is only EXAMS...
This class highly depends on how well you study. The exams consist of 50% from the lectures/readings and 50% from the videos. You MUST fill out the study guide with extreme detail if you want to pass. And take notes on the videos, and you will be fine. Extra credit is given. Study well and you will pass. Do not miss any scheduled exams, no makeups!
