he doesnt really explain things well, kinda boring, which sucks cuz the class is helllla hard!
PY211 sucks regardless of teacher. Mohanty, despite first impression does care about students -- just go talk to him during office hours at the beginning of the semester and ask for help. What he calls "simple algebra" isn't always clear to stud
He's a good guy and as said before he does care about students. Just get extra help if you need it from him or TAs.
I love Raj Mohanty. Keeps your attention much better than the other teachers, he has a great sense of humor.. and, he likes to give out practice problems in class, and tells you which ones you should really know how to do, in case, y'know, there's a test.
He's really cool and pretty funny when he wants to be. he goes over a lot of practice problems and handouts that are great for predicting whats on the midterm
Uses power point too much. Doesn't go through enough examples step by step. But the same as any other PY 211 prof.
Awesome teacher. Very nice and caring. He knows what he's talking about, so listen to him. He cares about his students and actually wants them to do well, so get to know him!
He is funny and really cares about his class. He gives extra problems and goes through the material thoroughly. He is the best of the 211 teachers
Boring PP lectures put you to sleep, has no interest in anything late in the day. Often goes through problems without teaching the material. Teaches the exam the class before after saying "cheating is wrong". Beware of him as a sub, very disc
Good guy. Funny, Clear in his speech although he has an accent. Gives plenty of problems to work on. Remembers everyone's names once intoduced. Cares about his students and about them understanding the material.
Cool guy!
He doesn't solve any problems at all in lecture. He's alright.
This was the most disorganized class I've ever taken at BU. And Mohanty's slogan to every problem (without having answered your question): "It's easy, right guys?" ...
A nice guy with a good sense of humor (most of the class didn't get it though b/c they were asleep). My gripe is with his power point slides and the presumption that they, combined with his monotone voice, could teach us anything about physics. The book was more informative than he.
He is awesome, very friendly. His class is managable, do the homework and pay attention to class notes, they will appear in the exams. If you put the effort in, you will get a good grade. He curves the final exam and grades but not the midterms.
Don't be fool, this guy won't curve believe me! Worst teacher alive.
Realy cool professor. He was very helpful and very clear. He did a decent amount of problems in class and would walk around and offer assistance. Final exam and final grades are curved, but not midterms. Notes are a bit disorganized, but office hours and the book are great. Easy C+/B-, hard A/B
This guy was amazing for the first 2/3 of the semester, then he just fell apart. I dunno, the TF's graded unfairly, and overall, this class, and this professor, should be avoided, but certainly not at all costs.

he uses powerpoint presentaions for every class, BEST PY 211 profesor
Yo, this guy's awesome, and for PY211 he's the best, by far. He takes a boring and hard class and makes it alot easier than the other teachers. If you're taking 211, you want Mohanty.
copies the book exactly and puts it on powerpoint, doesnt explain things to well...but if you have to take py211, he is the best.

hes the bomb!!
Compared to all other PY211 professors, Mohanty is THE best. Teaches straight out from book and teaches practical examples. Very methodical, but does go very fast and doesnt go back to explain stuff he puts off. Exam preparation is good, gives u "similiar" examples. Beware tho, that he does leave for 1month, so second exam is score is poor. Recomnd
The average of his class is the highest of all other sections. He is methodical and he knows what to teach...comparing to other prof who spend the whole lecture deriving an equation. Strong and funny accent, but he uses powerpoint to present to compensate....go for him for py211
He explains everything from the beginning and does not go into useless derviations like the other professors do. He is very clear and concise. He enjoys answering questions and pushes you to answer in class questions. Very straight-forward, very concise, very clear, highly recommended.
He was just a great teacher. Sometimes a little hard to understand because of his accent, but overall, just great. He wants everyone to do well and he and his TF's are very willing to help out.
Funny guy, really humorous. Love his accent, I like to imitate him all the time. Ok at explaining basic concepts, but more examples should be done in class apart from the easy ones that my grandmother could do (and she doesn't even speak english!) Tests are good, grading is a little weird though, I expected an A and got a B+. Best phys prof however
Good teacher, explains things well in class and the class is worth going to. Cares about his students. The tests are easier than the homework, luckily. I am not sure how the grading worked, but I didn't do quite as well as I thought I would.
Probably the best professor for PY 211. Explains almost everything very well and with clarity, and his lectures are worth going to. His homework assignments are tough, but this doesn't have a large negative impact on the class. A lot can be learned from Mohanty.
Mohanty is a funny, interesting professor, and he definitely knows his stuff- however, he seems to have a hard time relating to students who might not be as smart as he was (everything is "easy"). Lectures are pretty unorganized, which can have a negative impact on learning.. The tests are usually a lot easier than the homeworks, fortunately.
mohanty gives HW the TA cant figure out, teaches topics in seemingly random order, and crams in some material from 451. but his tests are easy in comparison and your final grade wont make you cry. easy weekly discussion quizzes, (sometimes) brutal weekly HW assignments, annoying labs. be prepared to work.
It was extremely bad organized. He was to much into showing himself more than teaching.
Mohanty is really nice guy and has an awkward sense of humor but is a very strange prof. He is really unorganized and doesn't explain concepts well but is not extremely demanding. His hw and exams problems aren't too hard and final grade was curved nicely. Everything is "straightforward" to him but I think that's bc he's too lazy to explain things
He's a funny/awkward guy in a good way. You can get away with just reading the book and going to office hours for the most part. To be honest, the book has been most helpful to me because his lectures tend to go all over the place. Still, he's a nice guy.
Lectures sometimes are long and drawn out but the book is amazing. Mohanty is always willing to help if you email him. The final grade is curved really nicely. If you need to take this class, don't be worried about taking it with Mohanty. Overall great semester with him!
All he does is read from slides. Even those are word for word the examples in the textbook. In study sessions all he does is reread the slides from lecture. Most of the time it seems like he doesn't know the material he is teaching. He promptly replies to emails, though.
Drones on and on, forces you to fall asleep.
TERRIBLE lecturer. Very unapproachable and not interested in teaching. Just reads from slides and focuses on emphasizing the wrong material, but he does do practice problems. The textbook written by Duffy is what saved my grade. I only showed up to class for participation points.
raj is the worst. very apathetic and vague. take ANY other professor for what should be an easy intro physics course
Try to avoid getting him as your physics lecturer. Doesn't explain concepts well and does not equip his students with the fundamentals to be able to solve problems adequately/efficiently on their own.
Raj was great. He was the only lecturer to give exam type examples. He showed us how to solve all problems without numbers so we could apply to any questions. Was extremely available and his sass made class fun.
He's a bit sassy yet dull during lectures, but always finds a way to be entertaining if you like dry humor. During lectures he did many exam type examples which, to me, is the primo way of learning physics. DO HIS HANDOUTS WHEN YOU STUDY! I felt like he really cared about the students, but the course itself was disconnected between the profs.
Yes, he can be kind of dull, but his problems are super helpful even though he doesn't go over how to do all of them. Do his handouts and ask him questions if you need help; he is actually very helpful outside of class as well. He definitely cares, but you have to put effort forward.
Terrible teacher. Never explained questions in depth and absolutely apathetic.
Lectures are unclear, jumps from concept to concept without finishing the problems, assumes students can do everything on their own.Dismissive of entire class when everyone expresses confusion over a concept.Labs and discussion quizzes are very easy, inconsistent difficulty level from the hw and exams, which are too much for an intro class.
Really nice, but has a dry sense of humor that can come across as rude. Gives a lot of good exam type examples and tries to be helpful after class/in his (limited) office hours.
Go to office hours.
He has good intentions as a professor and if you reach out for help he is there to help. Office hours are really helpful and you should definitely go. It's a big class and hope that he doesn't make the tests.
Raj is a very insightful teacher who gives his students meaningful quotes to live by such as "You have to think, not guess!" Raj is funny because he says bector.
Mohanty is clearly knowledgeable but he unfortunately can't teach. Take PY105 with any other professor if you want to actually learn and be able to perform on exams. Because I had him I had to learn all of the topics at home which wasn't easy. I felt like there was no reason to even go to class because I knew I wouldn't gain anything out of it.
The thing that makes or breaks a lecturer for me is their ability to keep me focused and attentive to the material. Raj's voice is just too monotonous and slow for me to be able to pay attention. He's a nice guy who cares about his students and he cracks humorous jokes (which is appreciated). He clearly knows his stuff, but he wasn't for me.
Very hard to understand, especially since the lectures are now over zoom. However, he is knowledgable about the subject, but if you want to do well, choose another professor
Prof. Mohanty is very hard to understand in class. However, if you have him it's not the end of the world because of how the course is designed. If you do your worksheet, homework, and ebook for every single problem and you will crush the quizzes. Prof is also pretty lenient about absences and making up assignment/quizzes.
I had him for the evening section; if you take this class with him, you'd actually fail the class bc the whole semester you'd self-teach the whole course. He doesn't reply to emails, literally goes through 2 worth of lectures within an hour, expects you to know how to do the calculations (when he doesn't even explain how to do it). Dont take him.
I honestly really liked Mohanty because it's a night class but we always leave an hour early. Because of how the class is structure you need to put in a lot of work outside of class but it's not bad. Personally I just learn through the pre-session and e-book.
Took him in the night section. While he is qualified, he clearly doesn't have much passion left for teaching the Physics I. He always was stepping outside to make phone calls, always started class late, and when I came to him to discuss grades, he blatantly told me that I did badly (like way to rub it in...).
The worst professor I've ever had. Just look his name up in BU's reddit. He only comes to about half of the classes, and the rest are run by first year graduate students who can't teach well and undergrads who aren't even physics students.
WORST prof you could have. Hehows up only on lecture days. Class ends early bc he is too lazy to go through content. Other profs crap on him. He doesn't show up to lab. If you ask for help after class "he has to leave". You will not learn anything & will resort to excessive time in OH. He is "unfireable" b/c past 10 year. Not respected by profs.
AWFUL. DO NOT TAKE HIM. HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR SUCESS AS A STUDENT. BU NEEDS TO FIRE HIM. GRAD STUDENTS HAVE TO TEACH THE CLASS AND THEY ARE NOT FIT TO DO IT. THEY COMPLAIN. PROFS IN THE DEPARTMENT COMPLAIN ABOUT HIM TOO. YOU'RE ONLY CHANCE AT DOING WELL IS BY SPENDING SEVERAL HOURS GETTING HELP FROM OTHER PROFS. IT IS NOT FAIR. GET A DIF PROF
He is a disgrace to the BU community. For the tuition you pay, you deserve better. The class is difficult, yes, but it is managable to other students who have different profs. If you have him, other professors in office hours will tell you that you must go to other sections/office hours to learn the material you need to do well. He will not teach.
Professor Mohanty hinders success in PY105 frequent absences, poor communication, and rushed lectures. He often skips class without notice, leaving students unsupported. His lectures are rushed, ending early, with little time for detailed explanations. Overreliance on TAs adds to the struggle, making it hard for students to keep up and succeed.
The PY105 department has issues with him. They constantly talk to him about the MANY complaints students have. This should tell you enough. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
When I asked him for help (class ended an hour early), he told me he had to leave and to go to his office hours. I went to his OH and he was not there. Then I emailed him and he never replied. He is unorganized, impassionate, and simply does not care for his students.
As a student who has to know physics for the MCAT, I am half way through the semester and just know I will be teaching myself everything on my own. He is awful. If you decide to take him, make sure it's only to graduate and you can drop physics from your mind after you're done. You will not gain anything from him. He is in his own world.
Do not recommend.
This physics professor is extremely UNSUPPORTIVE, disrespectful, and overall terrible. He rushes through lectures and doesn't respond to emails, leaving students without assistance. If you struggle with exams he downplays your success in class and simply states the obvious. He is unhelpful during office hours, students rely on other profs for help.
I HAVE NEVER DEALT WITH A PROFESSOR LIKE THIS. I DO NOT WISH HIM ON MY WORST ENEMY. HE IS THE WORST.
0/10. He is just not it.
I feel like he wrote the 5's himself. I can not imagine a student doing well in his course.
Awful lectures. He depends on grad students to teach the class and he dissapears to make personal phone calls during lectures. I have been told by other professors that I have to attend their lectures in order to do well in this course. A huge shame. No student should have to attend other lectures to learn. Huge disparity btwn him and other profs.
If you can self teach yourself go for it. If not, like most students, do not take him. He teaches the class assuming you know everything and does not care to answer your questions thoroughly. He gets annoyed if you ask him questions after class because he is focused on leaving right away.
Ignore the other comments. I will be taking Mo for 106 bc I liked him for 105. Class is 2 nights a week and he teaches everything needed. He does prac problems and is always helpful. The content is easy and Mo explains it well. Commenters are complaining because they didn't study and didn't do well, not because it was hard. I recommend him.
So boring, doesn't teach well, never shows up to his office hours. Don't recommend. Three weeks in and already so over him.
If you are a self-studier, your professor for PY105 is irrelevant (flipped classroom). But if you aren't a self studier, Professor Mohanty is bad. He explains things poorly, struggles to help with problems, and is very un-engaging. I'd recommend him if you self-study since he finishes lectures quicker than other profs, but for everyone else - nah.
Doesn't care. Awful. Rude. No willingness to help. I would rather be there for the full class time and learn, then be let out early and not learn a single thing. It would be another story if we were let out early after actully being taught even just one dang thing.
this dude is literally the worst bro like genuinely the worst professor ive ever had in my entire life by far he is not good at a single aspect of being a professor- he starts class 30 minutes late consistently and ends it like an hour and a half early, his lectures are horrible and genuinely impossible to listen to or focus on DO NOT TAKE MOHANTY
do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not do not - this is a warning
Good professor with great lectures. Funny and was engaging during the class times. Also checked up through email making sure everything was okay when I missed class.
Physics is a hard class, but Dr. Mo makes it way easier. Could not recommend more highly. Great guy and keeps lecture engaging!
Does not teach, you will be teaching yourself the entirety of the course. Seems like he doesnt even know what he is talking about sometimes. Actually worst teacher do not take try and get any other professor
raj literally does nothing. he just sits there and zones out during class and has the TAs do literally everything. he "lectures" in the beginning but its just "oh you should know this" fast forward through everything. he doesn't teach literally anything, you have to teach yourself everything, and is not helpful in any way. DON'T TAKE RAJ. warning.
I was initally scared to take his class but he's honestly super funny and a great professor. i like how the class is only twice a week at night. This class is not as bad as what everyone makes it out to be
Raj is my favorite man. Does not give a single f about the class, only reads off of slides. I survived this class bc of the TA's and LA's, thank you Divya my queen. Physics is hard, if you want to be coddled dont take with raj, but if you want a fun time with minimal work in class fs take him. funniest man ever.
He's funny but a terrible teacher. He rushes through material and barely teaches. TAs did most of the work. Without them, I'd be lost. You'll teach yourself everything (thank GOD for ChatGPT). He doesn't answer questions and gives vague responses, and once even laughed at a stressed student during a practice exam. DO NOT TAKE HIM!! YOU'LL BE SORRY!
