Wish I could have him for every math class. Had him for Calc 2 and I think he was the best Calc 2 professor I could've gotten. Was so much fun and would do anything to help his students. Would stay at office hours until 5pm. He gave us a quiz every Thursday, which seems annoying; however, helps your grade and will prepare you for the exams.
Overall an amazing professor and person. He is from India so he has a slight accent, but he has probably the best English out o many other professors. You can understand him easily. He explains things very clearly, will stay to help you no matter what time it is, has review sessions all the time. There is a weekly quiz, but he is a must take!
I had taken AP calc in high school and the courses are very similar, but he did not do a great job of explaining topics. I would not have done well in the class had I not taken calc in high school. Tests are a lot harder than the homework and the notes in class. Posts all notes to blackboard. Do the homework and go to class you to pass basically
Took him last fall. He is a great prof overall. However, he has the habit of calling people to answer and participate, like it's a middle school. It's college for god's sake. Other than that, he was pretty cool, would recommend.
Do not take him if you're not good at math already. He is very moody and that makes him very tough to talk too. I hated going to his office hours if it were just the two of us because he was even more annoying. One girl even started crying because of the way he talks to people. This guy is a real clown I should have dropped the class.
Hard class, but amazing professor! He spends at least 8 hours a week in his office helping students on homework and study, I don't think he's ever eaten a whole lunch meal because he is so dedicated. He really does want you to do well, and encourages student exploration, even giving me fun little puzzles on the side after I mentioned liking them :)
Office hours are basically tutoring sessions and are invaluable. A lot of quizzes but they're all scheduled, never a surprise. He's a fan of stand-up comedy and makes little jokes during class. Calc II is tough, but he made the class fun. Fell behind the syllabus because he wanted to make sure everyone fully understood all concepts. No curve.
Go to office hours! He offers quiz redemption and you can gain back 80% of the points you lost which is great! Sometimes there is a lot of online homework, but he gives you about a week to do them and sometimes extends the deadline. The review sheets are just like the exams! Definitely taking Calc 2 next semester with him. Be ready for "game show."
Probably the best math professor there is at Towson. He's a great teacher and uses a lot of examples to get the principles across!
He definitely knows what he's talking about but is very judgmental if you're not a master at mathematics already and forces you to solve problems a specific way even if your way works. He also is an impossible grader and has actually take off points on a Calculus exam for GRAMMAR.
He is the rudest person alive. I hope you have good grammar because those points will be deducted as well. Would recommend to my worst enemy, but that is about it.
Dr. Walia is the hardest professor I've ever had. He's very rude and an EXTREMELY hard grader. He forces participation by calling on you (regardless of having your hand raised) then will criticize you in front of the whole class for not having the right answer. Do not recommend.
Wouldnt have passed calc with a different professor. 2 exams, 6 quizzes, and paper AND online hw due about every 1-2 weeks. He's available almost every day outside of class for help or if you want to makeup a quiz or homework grade. He curved our grades at the end of the semester which brought me from a C to a B. Extremely thankful for the man.
He allows you to make up lost points on quizzes/homework and sometimes even exams. There's lots of HW--paper problems and online problems due weekly. I thought tests were easy and he allows you to bring a cheat sheet. This class was overwhelming with the amount of hw/quizzes/etc so I'm not sure if I'd take it again.
TAKE HIM!!!! He allows you to redo your graded work and get points back which really helps your grade. Yea, he's a hard grader, but he gives you feedback so you can improve on it. Honestly, he's the best math teacher I've taken at Towson. If you want to actually understand calculus, take him. You won't regret it.
Do NOT take his class. He talks down to students and makes you feel stupid if you don't know the answer to a question. Extremely rude. He's a ridiculously hard grader, if your work isn't explained line by line or done how it is in class, he absolutely will take off points even if your work is right. I would not recommend his class to anyone.
Dr. Walia is nice enough to offer quiz and sometimes test redemption. BUT IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE STOMACH TO BEAR ALL THE RUDENESS AND HUMILIATION FROM HIM, DO NOT TAKE DR. WALIA. If you don't know the answer to his directed questions, be prepared because he will do his very best to make you feel stupid in front of other people.
Walia is tough, he grades every homework and test to the very detail, but he is available outside of class anytime you need help. If you do the work and review the review PPT for the exams you will be fine. Kids who are not good at math will have difficulty. He does let you redeem points from any quiz or hw but not exam. Easy B if you put the timein
Honestly love professor Walia. Yes he is a tough grader, but he offers redemption for quizzes and homeworks that can seriously boost your grade. Also his teaching style is very good, you can tell he really cares and is trying his best to help his students understand
Only covered about half the material listed in the syllabus to be covered in the course because he is so bad at explaining simple ideas. Be prepared to wait in line for 2 hours for 5 minutes of help because there are so many confused students at his office hours. Takes off points for spelling/punctuation mistakes (yes, even in a math class)
Dr. Walia is always available outside of class for redemption on quizzes and homework. You can get back 80% of the lost points on these. Grading is very detailed on homework/quizzes/exams. If you're a slacker and don't want to attend office hours or are just generally not good at math skip this class. Otherwise this is an easy B or working A.
Dr Walia is AWESOME! Yes, he is a tough grader and he does put you on the spot but only because he genuinely cares about his students. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He offers redemption points which will save your grade. He loves it when students ask questions. You get points for participation.
I took him for Calc 2 and Discrete, and he had the same grading criteria in both. He really wants students to pass and is very accessible outside of class. He fell behind the syllabus in both classes, but it was so everyone understood the material. You have to put in some effort, as it is a math class, and as long as you do the work, you'll pass.
Discrete mathematics is a terrible and seemingly useless subject, yet it is required at TU for some majors. I took it once with another professor and again with Walia. Rajeev Walia makes passing Discrete Math possible. His redemption policy on homework and quizzes is something you should abuse to the fullest, as it is what makes passing possible.
Rajeev can be very intimidating for some kids espically if you are the type who doesn't like to participate. He tries to get people off their comfort zone and tries to get everyone involve. and if you are stuck with any problems or if something doesn't make sense no matter how silly it is you can ask him and he'll be more than happy to help. GOAT!!
Professor Walia is the best teacher I've had at Towson. I suck at math, barely passed Calc 1 and felt unprepared for Calc 2. However, he teaches at a relatively slow pace and makes sure you understand the material. There's a lot of homework, but he allows grade redemption for all assignments except tests during office hours. Take him!!!
Dr. Walia is a great professor, you can tell he really cares about his students. He explains the material well in class, and is also helpful during office hours. There is a lot of homework and he can be a tough grader, but it helps you in the end. He also offers redemption points on homework and quizzes. I would definitely take him again.
He is a very knowledgable teacher and he is always pushing you to do better, however sometimes he can make you feel a little bit stupid. He is also a very tough grader, his way or no way. But for calc1 one of the best profs, our test avgs were the highest throughout all sections. LOTS OF HOMEWORK, be ready to work for your grade. you will learnalot
Do yourself a favor and take McKinney or Davis. Grades harshly and inconsistently. Did a HW with him at office hours and got a 73 while someone else got a 96 on the same hw done with HIM! Exams/HW's are Very hard, quizzes are more forgiving. Very rude, and is terrible at explaining simple ideas. Fell very behind on the syllabus, and rushes topics.
If you are willing to put the time in you will pass the class. This is one of the hardest courses I have taken so you really just need to spend time outside of class going over what is taught in class. He always is available for office hours and allows you to get points back on quizzes. He genuinely wants you to pass.
Mandatory attendance. Exams were hard, with no chance to improve. Quizzes were easier, but still challenging. Only redeeming quality is redemption where you can earn 80% of your grade back in office hours. Unfortunately Walia combines office hours with Calc II so good luck getting help. Very poor explanations as well
grades hw as if they are tests, offers redemption for quizzes but be prepared to wait 2 hours for 10 minutes of his time. assigns seats and counts how many times you participate during class. holds quizzes the day before holidays for the sole purpose of not allowing you to go home early and took an unreasonable amount of time to post grades
He's a good professor that genuinely wants his students to understand the material. However, the cons drastically outway the pros. He takes FOREVER to grade. Also, he's very anal about grading. He will find the littlest mistakes and deduct points. If you put in the work you can do well in this class but he will definitely cause A LOT of stress.
Don't play with your gpa. He clearly does not care about how hard students are trying. He teaches math through PowerPoint slides and the whole lecture sounds like a script. He wants your answers word to word matching with his answer key. Don't waste your money for his class . Wait a semester or register with someone else.
Professor Walia really cares about his students. He will stay for many hours after office hours have ended to make sure each student understands the material. I succeeded in higher mathematics courses because of the way he taught calculus 1. Highly recommend. Best mathematics teacher I have had.
I had Dr. Walia for Calculus I over the summer. He grades tests and quizzes with a fine-tooth comb and will deduct several points for simply forgetting a label. He does the same with homework but did not grade any of them until the end of the semester so you did not know how to improve. Save your GPA and take someone else.
If you have the option to take this class with another professor, I suggest you do so. The way this professor grades your work is very frustrating and unacceptable. He expects everything you do on a quiz, a homework and an exam to be exactly as he did it in class, otherwise he won't give you the points you deserve which is absurd.
Not worth it dont take him. I had an A in calc1 and precalc. I had a D in his class. 90% of the doped that class I wish I had done the same
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE PROFESSOR ! do not take him. so many things wrong with his class. The participation calculations are wack, he doesn't grade homework in time, tests and quizzes have minimum problems with TONS of points, if you mess up on a few things you pretty much have a F, he's super fake, and if you work hard he doesn't take that into account.
He offers a system called "redemption" where students can retake quizzes for partial credit, which he hold during office hours. This may sound good but his office are always filled with students, making it impossible to get outside help from him. He also grades you on participation which is competitive with other students. And he grades attendance
I'm retaking Calc I, which is rather embarrasing, but this guy is the best math professor I've encountered. Most professors don't really care about their students, but prof Walia is willing to put in extra hours outside of class to help you understand. If you put in the work, there is absolutely no reason you shouldn't do well in this class.
He's very pedantic, which can come off as condescending, but he doesn't mean to be. He's hard on his students because he wants to give the best education he can, and he'll come through for you if you show him that you're really trying. I respect him a lot and I think he's a great teacher. Not easy, but more than worth the extra effort.
Don't get me wrong, calculus 1 is a hard subject, there's no denying that, but Dr. Walia makes it easy to understand. The way he teaches makes the content easy to understand and he makes sure his students understand. He is a hard grader only because he encourages us to do it the right way, which in the long run helps a lot.
He really cares about his students learning but that cant take away that he is a very tough grader and a hard teacher. He is not the worst but I would avoid him if possible. I lost points in a quiz for having its instead of its. Mind you, that was the only thing I got wrong and that costed me 10%.
He really cares about his students learning but that cant take away that he is a very tough grader and a hard teacher. He is not the worst but I would avoid him if possible. I lost points on a quiz for having it(apostrophe)s instead of its. This is not English, this is math. That costed me 10% of my grade on that quiz and that was my only error
If you are going to Take Calc II, take Walia's 273 class. If not, find a professor that is an easier grader.
STAY AWAY. Every single class he taught had had over a 50% withdraw rate. I think he didn't want to look bad and did a huge curve on everyone's grades at the end. I'm not sure if it was just this semester. Very hard grader and significantly more work than any other math class I have taken.
Avoid at all costs. He will break your spirit.
VERY tough grader, literally word-for-word strict. Nearly half of my class dropped over the course of the semester. Expect weekly homework and in-class quizzes. The only saving graces are the extra credit and curves for the harder exams. Office hours are a good way to get homework answers and he at least knows the material well, but can be rude.
If I had not taken Math 263 with Dr. Walia, I would have failed. I am the worst at math, but Dr. Walia helped me so much. His grading is specific, don't expect to pass if you don't put 110% effort in. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He genuinely wants you to pass. Work with him and he will work with you! It's a tough class, but he makes it bearable.
Challenging course requiring extensive studying outside of class. Unfortunate 263 gatekeeps grad reqs, as 8 students withdrew from a class of 24. Walia is very picky regarding the wording of one's answer; however, offered extra credit on tests + quizzes and holds helpful office hours. Pick a different prof if you can, but 263 with him is possible.
Professor Walia makes this class a lot harder than what most other professors make it. Hes very strict with his grading like if you miss a comma in quantified statement. BUT with that being said, hes always available, always records office hours, hes fair and reasonable. Though many people dropped, if you stuck around he helped a lot
Dr. Walia is an excellent professor. He is detailed and clear in instruction. His lectures are what I consider high-intensity. You must give full attention during every lecture. If you do, you shouldn't have to use any external resources to learn. This was the easiest math class I've taken so far; only because Dr. Walia is such a great teacher.
In all my years of education, I have never in my life have had a tougher grader. He does not teach things well, as he starts example problems and moves on without finishing them and overly complicates the minute details. He also is impossible to talk with, if you do not give proper wording to perfection, he won't listen. Avoid at all costs.
He is amazing. He gives participation grade to keep the class engaging, go over homework in office hour, review sheets are very helpful. He is very strict on grammar error in quiz & exams, which I found a bit annoying but overall he was good. You do not need book or other extra resources for help. I highly recommend to take classes with him.
Worst professor and most pressed professor I have taken. Made up difficult problems on tests and quizzes. Even if you show you're trying he doesn't care. Nice person but seems like just an act. 0/10
He does have specific things he looks for when grading, but he was 100% upfront about it from day one. He genuinely wants us to do well. He always goes beyond his office hours and leaves us recordings of them in case we do not get to attend them. The most crucial part is that he teaches very well. I have had professors that don't know how to teach.
Reading the bad reviews got me worried, but after spending close to a month in his class I can say that I am glad that I gave him a chance and took his class. He knows what he is doing because I usually don't understand things from the first time, but with him I did. Homework was a lot and participation was mandatory, but it helped my quiz grade
When I was taking the course he would inform us that our test grades were constantly 10% higher than other professors who taught the same course. His class was lecture heavy but no textbook reading AT ALL = win! He had office hours which helped me a lot. Not an easy course by ANY means so be prepared to have a lot of homework and studying to do.
Very unaccommodating; unless you are a pretty girl. Upwards to 5, and no less than 3 assignments due in a given week; on top of a 10-15 minute quiz each week. Cannot use a TI-84 or 36x in his course. Can be hard to understand, and won't allow any concessions. Homework, and tests are incredibly difficult with very limited time. Don't recommend.
Had I not had him as my professor I would have not done so well in this class.1) He knows how to teach! 2) Always available for office hours in person or online 3) Homework was a bit much but consistent 4) Always kept us updated with announcements and very organized etc. If you put in an honest attempt you will pass.
I will say this, he was strict in grading, but he was upfront about it from day one. Even when we work on problems in class he will say "make sure to add this". And when I got back my quizzes/exams I got a better idea of the detail he looks for. He goes above and beyond for his students.
This professor is a strict grader, but he lets you know at the beginning and tells you what you should write on quizzes and exams. He is available for office hours which will actually help you on quizzes and exams and he also records them. Just pay attention in class and go to office hours and you'll be fine.
Professor Walia explains things very well and even gives you participation points for answering and asking questions. If you pay attention and put in the work, easy class. He records all lectures and office hours so you can always go back to it on blackboard or even take the class online from your room. He also curves grades depending on class.
He is an ok professor . He is available for office hour for help. During office hours he gets frustrated when you don't understand something and if don't get the question right.
Very lecture heavy class with LOTS of hw (at least 3 assignments/week)! Would def recommend a different prof if you aren't planning on taking Calc II. A really tough grader and takes off points if it is not written exactly how he wants. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the topic, but it is a difficult course and lots of work/added stress.
an insane amount of work but a good professor whos very accessible outside of class. exams are weighted heavy so be careful, and theres quizzes weekly. he also is very peculiar about grading but makes his standards well known, its just a lot to remember. overall great
Professor Walia is okay. He's a tough grader, and you need to do proofs the exact way he wants them. He gives you partial credit, so dont worry about getting an entire problem wrong. Quizzes and homework every week, so be prepared. We got behind schedule, and we had two exams in one week, which was horrible. He also gets frustrated at students.
Solid Professor. Just extremely nit picky on grading and makes it harder than it is because
I took him for MATH273, and I am taking him again this semester for MATH274. An amazing professor, with great notes, just follow the way he does maths and you're good. Drops the lowest quiz, webwork HW every week worth 10 points, lots of opportunity of extra credits. Attend his office hours.
He wasn't the worse the professor ever, but you will need to be paying attention and paying attention to how he specifically writes proofs. There were quizzes every week but the class is manageable you just have to be willing to put towards the effort. When you answer a question wrong he does get a little rude.
Unfair grader, doesn't communicate his needs for the class, often blames students for his problems, and doesn't have accurate expectations for the body of students that he is teaching.
He is an amazing professor who cares about his students more than any other prof. I've seen. The course is difficult and he's strict but before the first exam I didn't go to him and did bad but after going to his office hours I got a B on my second exam and an A on the third and final exam. If you care about understanding the material he's perfect.
He records his lectures on zoom so you can go back to them whenever needed, tough grader you will have to write answers exactly the way he does. He might get rude if you answer a questions wrong during class participation which could be embarrassing. I like how we have quizzes every week helps me stay updated.
I love Dr. Walia, calc 2 isn't a walk in the park, and he tends to put people on the spot sometimes, but overall he's a great professor and you should take him. If you're not ready to study, you shouldn't take this class in the first place though. That said, I'd definitely take him again he's great.
Positive reviews prob written by him. Toughest grader I've ever had, weekly in-class quizzes, takes forever to grade assignments, rushed through entire units because we ran out of classes in the semester, mean when you say a wrong answer. He gets a 2 and not 1 because he held frequent office hours (to reteach the info he rushed through in class).
Worst prof you could probably have, if you give the wrong answer during class he will put you on the spot and insult you like you're supposed to be born with the knowledge of this material. Awful grader, he even takes off points for spelling mistake
Very weird about specifics of words during exams, couldn't understand half the time why he was grading this way? However, you can always go back to his lectures as they are recorded, office hours every week, expect him to be very mean for no reason at all. If he asks you something, you gotta answer it right or he'll insult you in front of everyone!
Class it self is tough no matter who the instructor is. He is a great when it comes to office hours and teaching. The class is very content heavy. If you visit office hours you will do good in his class.
This professor is really good. I WOULD RECOMMENDED TO TAKE HIM. He is very nice and knowledgeable. His classes are very engaging. I like the way he does his participation game.
Great Professor! The course is very tough but he makes it easy to understand in class. Attendance and class participation is a must. It will allow you to understand the course material. If you struggle go to his office hours and he will make sure your prepared for the quiz and exams. He does review for both quizzes and exam which are very helpful.
He is really good professor.
I would recommend to take him.
He has wonderful teaching style.
He teaches material well but the way he interacts with students is poor. Tells us to ask and answer questions for participation points but insults you in front of the class if you get it wrong. As if we are supposed to know what to do off the bat. He'll also roll his eyes and say overall condescending things. Good teacher but piss poor attitude
Very good at explaining concepts, records everything and does comprehensive zoom reviews for exams. However he is kind of rude, if you answer a question in class wrong enough he will put you on the spot, is very specific about wording on tests. Only calc 2 professor who gives a reference sheet for quizzes and exams, it is EXTREMELY helpful.
This class is terrible for your metal health. He requires people to participate by answering questions then belittles you if say anything but a textbook perfect answer. The only way to describe his grading is obsessive. He uses an entire red pen to grade every problem. Other sections of the same class are much easier. Do. Not. Take. His. Class.
The good reviews on here are fakes. They are all from Feb 6th and don't go into any detail. They are also typed in the same manner Rajeev Walia talks. If you look up reviews of him teaching at University of California Riverside in the ~2010's he has a 2.2. Those student say the same things that towson students are saying. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
OMG This is a terrible, condescending professor. I've never been driven to leave a review until I've taken his Discrete course. My course started with 21 students & ended with 5 remaining!!! He believes there's nothing wrong with his teaching style & how he grades. If you are considering his course, SAVE YOURSELF the headache and money. DO NOT TAKE
DO NOT BELIEVE THE FAKE GOOD REVIEWS!!! HE'S THE ONE MAKING THEM. THIS CLASS WAS HORRIBLE. CONDESCENDING ATTITUDE. INSULTING. RUDE. IMPATIENT. LACK OF RESPECT. TERRIBLE MANNERISMS. I STRONGLY ADVOCATE FOR EVERYONE TO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE. YOU WILL STRUGGLE AND JEOPARDIZE GRADUATING ON TIME. YOU'VE BEEN INFORMED!
Do yourself a favor and don't take this class with him. He's rude, condescending, and insults students for getting answers wrong. Participation feels like a trap. His attitude made it hard to learn, and overall his class single handedly wrecked my mental health. I quite literally cried in my car after the final. Avoid at all costs.
I studied so hard in this class and i got As on the quizzes but once the test came around it was written in a different way and it was nothing like any of the quizzez or reviews reviews. i pulled so many all nighters and this man will just tank on all of your hard work. don't take him
He really knows his stuff and will take the time to help you learn.Uses a game show system to promote class participation, I feel like this wouldn't be necessary if he worked on his attitude. Kids get conditioned to say sorry after everything because he's so rude to people. Tough grader, tough exams, but he also gives a very complete review sheet.
If you want to pass Calculus 2 without being humiliated by your professor for the entire semester, beware. The good reviews on here are written by HIM and posted on the same dates. I've had plenty professors at 2 different schools and never encountered someone so rude to students. It's already a difficult course and his attitude makes it harder.
Weird guy. Good at teaching. I didn't care about his attitude because it was mostly just being frustrated about people not understanding basic concepts. If you don't want to participate, participation grade can be replaced with exam grade. Curves exams. He should stop being a hardass about breaks. Sometimes people just gotta take a dump yknow
His lectures are pretty good and detailed. He can be a real hard ass sometimes when grading and when students answer questions in class. The class material itself is pretty difficult but he makes a genuine effort to help his students any way he can. You will have to study a lot and go to office hours to pass. Stay away if you want an easy grade.
Took him for 5-week 263 course, exams are wild. Kept us updated through BB announcements, did plenty of practice for topics, and had office hours Mon-Thrus, also Friday by request. Gets a bit irritated when you get a question wrong when you participate and say stuff like "idk why people take this class when they don't want to put in the work".
Took him for MATH274 and quite literally bolted the other way when I saw he was taking MATH263. Every time someone asked a question in class, he would start insulting them INFRONT OF EVERYONE for not knowing something THAT HE IS SUPPOSED TO TEACH. He might be good at explaining easy topics, but not the hard ones.
I took him for calculus ii and Discrete math. He is so good at his lectures. Yes, he gets a little angry when students make silly mistakes but that shows how much he wants his students to learn. He is a tough grader but gives a lot of extra credit and does favors in exams. He is reachable outside of class every day of the week except the weekends.
