Go to class, read the power points, and ask questions if you have them. This is Organic Chemistry. Prepare yourself for a lot of work and a challenge. He's very patient, helpful and fair. Go for it.

Great professor and always available to help. Gives a lot of work but it helps for the exams.
Chemistry isn't easy but he tries his best to help everyone understand the material. he is open to seeing students during his office hours which is a great help. I am not good with chem but studied and passed.
I took him for Orgo I+2 at BC South campus. Great teacher, he is very thorough and very helpful but you MUST ask questions if you don't understand. A lot of opportunities for points to bring up your grade and some optional extra credit available. If I could take this class again, I'd definitely choose this professor again.
Very helpful and encouraging professor! Go to office hours as needed if confused with material- provides feedback and suggested study habits. It is important to complete homework/additional assignments as they will be useful for quizzes and test.
He goes through the material way to fast and skip information that is key for the full understanding of Organic Chemistry. His exams are confusing and he even though he gives a lot a chances for extra credit the amount of homework he gives is overwhelming. I do not recommend him, I had a perfect GPA until I took his class. Worst professor ever!!!!
Very nice and easy class. He does have an accent and is aware of it so he is very nice if you ask him to repeat himself. He shows how to do all expiraments prior to doing them yourself. You can always refer to the textbook if needed. Rarely studied and passed with a B. Very easy lab professor and not strict. Just go to class.
One of the best prof. Kind and passionate abt teaching.Quizzes after chapters(somewhat easy points).Study ppts, DO HW, and Co-op.He wants his students to pass and most importantly LEARN but u MUST STUDY.I DEEPLY REGRET NOT TAKING HIM THIS SEMESTER FOR CHM2211 instead Im suffering with a professor that does not teach and I am a straight A student :(
Great class, he gives a lot of homework but it's helpful for the test. The co-op assignments are difficult, and the quiz difficulty is similar to the actual test. If you study you will recieve a B or A.
He up is an amazing professor ! He gives lots of homework but I learned a lot ! He loves to explain and he really wants us to learn! Take him, you are not going to regret it.
Organic chemistry is hard, it is almost like a full time job. His lectures are good but he moves way too fast and it can be hard to keep up. Exams are HARD and you WILL fail them if you do not put the work in. Part of test is multiple choice the rest is free response. Over half of class failed 1st exam average was 74. Most people end up with C
I took him for organic 1 and 2. I personally really liked organic so the class wasn't as hard as people say. this class does consume a lot of your time. Be prepared to give up weekends to studying. either than that the test are easy. Ended up with a B for orgo 1 and an A for orgo 2. GOOD LUCK!!!
Really good professor, explains the materials really good and he makes sure you understand the topics... You have to study to pass his class, dont expect to get an A without putting any work because you wont. He is really fair and gives extra credits on test
The worst experience I have had in college with a class. He is VERY difficult. Flies through everything. Crammed an entire chapter into 10 minutes and then put it on the exam 2 days later. Gives a ton of homework and co-op is awful. GOOD LUCK YOU WILL NEED IT. Test averages in 60's.
I'm took him for organic II laboratory, and he just seems to be very harsh in grading lab reports. He makes you do too much and is too confusing, but a helpful professor in terms of concepts. If you want him for lecture I think he is good, but for lab he is challenging.
His tests are very long and difficult for Orgo II. I barely had enough time to finish everything in time. Some multiple choice but mostly free response. Exam grade averages in 60's and 70's. He will NOT curve at all. If you get a 68 he will fail you. His "extra credit" consist of an extra question worth 4 points on each 100 point exam.
He is a good professor. He gives 5 quizzes during the semester, scheduled on the syllabus with the chapters you have to know. Midterm and final was good, everything he said we were going to have, not crazy stuff. The lab reports are big part of your final grade and he reads every page, so make sure to have it always complete if you like A.
My biggest issue with this professor was his complete inability to pace himself. he spent much time on certain things and flew through others and they weren't consistently simple or complucated, but rather dependant on how much time he realized he had left. Very messy on the board. He is helpful and nice but not a great professor.
I took him for Orgo 1 and 2, but the two courses are different in which he proceeds slowly and gives more multiple choice in orgo 1 but in the 2nd portion its all free response and gets to be a little too much due to pure remembering mechanisms. His test are fair and you must study for Orgo 2 in advance to do well unlike orgo 1
Prof Shakya is an amazing professor. He has a slight accent but he is very aware of it. He makes himself available to his students. I have taken Prof Shakya for Chem 1 and 2, as honors. I will be taking him in the coming fall and winter for Orgo 1 and 2, also honors. Take him! He does give quite a bit of homework but he gives you PLENTY of time.
Took him for lecture and lab. His exams are a lot harder than the assignments he assigns. He spends a lot of time on a small portion of a chapter and rushes through the rest. He releases the assignments late. Office hours are not that convenient. Nice guy sort of
Horrible! Explains one thing but tests on another. I disputed my final grade and saw all the final grades for the class and no A's were given. My friends who got B's only took 1 class for the semester AND taught themselves. A ton of req'd HW and assignments that don't help you for the exams. Not taking him again and wouldn't recommend him to anyone
Definitely have to work for your grade. Quiz and/or test basically every week. Gives a lot of information so you need to be on the ball or you'll fall behind. Homework and group worksheet due every exam. Textbook needed for homework, but goes by power point mostly.
This is the first lab where I have had quizzes, mid term and final. You have to hand write all of your lab reports which is time consuming. Make sure to have every detail or points will be deducted.
I just finish taking him for Chm 1032. He is the absolute best. Take him and you won't regret it. Yes you have to attend class, yes you have to study. But he works with you.
He is a good professor. Yes there is a lot work. There are 3 exams and a final. The final can replace you lowest grade. He also drops your lowest quiz. I took him for lab as well he drop your lowest lab and quiz grade. He is a good professor. Study and do the work you will pass his class.
He is a very knowledgeable professor; he really knows his material. It can get difficult but if you devote yourself and take the time to study, its not as horrible as you may think. He is patient and his quizzes/test are doable. TAKE YOUR LAB WITH HIM. do not mix match professors. Homework load is average. Put forth effort and its an easy A.
Best chemistry professor ever. If you want to learn chemistry, then, he is the one you should take.
He is EXTREMELY helpful. As long as you take notes in class, ask questions, and pay attention you'll get a good grade. He works with you if you miss a quiz or homework on mastering and gives extra credit! I wish I took him for lab as well. He's very detailed in his lectures which is very helpful during the test.
This professor is horrible , his test is completely different from this power point presentation. The things you learn in class are not in the test, if you're not going at chemistry then don't take him you will.
Only take this class if you are familar with previous material from chemistry. If you're not familar with it, dont take this class because lectures will go by fast & you'll be easily confused. Other than that, this professor is a great prof., he knows his material & if you take notes & study, you will pass. He's also very considerate with grading.
He does not care about his students, not flexible at all, lectures are fast and at times unclear. Very very tough grader. very unhappy I took his class.
stay away from this professor. His lectures are extremely fast, and have nothing to do with the quizzes or tests. No extra credit opportunites. There is lots of homework. He honestly doesn't care if you pass or not. He is not willing to help you. I wish i would have never taken this class. He gives you 15 minutes for a 35 question "quiz"
Please stay away from this teacher. He is terrible, his powerpoints are clear but quizzes and exams has nothing from reviews. He only gives 2 points to complete the review and the questions for exam and quizzes are much harder than review. I absolutely regreated to take his class, if you can pick another teacher for CHM 1032 please do so
I have taken this Prof for both Orgo classes. He is an amazing teacher, Orgo is a hard subject so if you are not willing to put up the effort you will fail. He gives homework and quizzes that are very similar to the exam. He uses powerpoint and is always accesible to his students. Take him he's the best at BC for Orgo!!
his lecture are kind of easy to understand but when it comes to the quizzes and test it a whole different story its not the same as lecture its confusing and there no extra credit really just about two
Please believe us when we advise our fellow students to stay away from this professor's class. His power points are very informative and easy to understand "but" the quizzes and exams are totally different.. don't believe that his extra credit hand outs are gonna save you from getting a C or fail. I took his class for spring 2017. Disaster!!!!!!!!
You really have to work for your grade in this class. Make sure you do all the homework and really understand it, as this will prepare you for the tests. He is fair and wants you to pass. I would take him again, but like I said his class really isn't easy at all. But then again, the subject itself is just difficult.
Professor Shakya is a great chemistry teacher. Chemistry is very difficult with any professor but he helps you understand with lot of hands on activities and he has a funny side that makes it a little lighter. If there is anything you don't understand he's always available outside of class and willing to help you. He wants his students to succeed!
BEST OF THE BEST, makes Organic Chemistry fun and actually teaches you. I previously took the class with a different professor and failed. Professor Shakya is able to clearly explain the material, and is able to help everyone understand the toughest subjects. You still have to put in the hard work and study! but he will be there to lead the way!
Shakya is an amazing professor. I was hoping to just survive this class, but I actually learned some chemistry. As long as you show up for class and study for the tests, you should do fine. He's nice guy and helpful during office hours.
Professor Shakya does not deserve the 3.5 given. You have to deforest the Amazon Rainforest to print out the homework and co-op assignments he gives before every exam. He is inconsistent in grading and some of the material in the exams are not even covered in lecture. He rushes through the material and gives quizzes every week. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Before you judge by the numbers above, realize that this a challenging class and no matter who you take its going to be tough. Shakya is the real deal and you will have to study in order to get a good grade. There are quizzes at the end of each chapters and there are 4 tests. He drops the lowest test and quiz. Practice practice PRACTICE!
This professor was great in my opinion. I had a very high B and he gave me points to put me at an A. He's lectures are a little bit rushed but that's why I attend tutoring. You have to attend the lectures and actually study to pass his class. His quizzes and exams aren't that hard if you really study. This is a hard class in general, just study.
Professor does have an accent but taught very well. He explained the material and went over what you did not understand. I personally did not use the book. Take good notes and read power-points. He gives plenty of opportunities to get extra credit. Don't suggest skipping a class because you will feel lost the next time.
I took the 6 week accelerate class in the summer. To be honest, doing your Assignments are the greatest way to study and he gives a-lot of assignments . Listen up in the lectures. He is good at explaining. Theres no breaks in a 6 week class so keep a good paste. He is one of the better chemistry professors, many makes things very complicated.
Shakya is probably the best o-chem prof. ever and u will learn a lot ! Take his hw seriously, go to his office hours and do the HW with him and ask a lot of question, do that, and you will get an A the first time. But you have to wokr very hard. He impacted me so much with my education career. dont pass him up premeds.
Honestly if I could give this prof no stars I would.. lectures are super confusing he has no idea what he's doing. Also one of the very few lab professors that give pop quizzes on the labs and gives you a midterm AND a final and grades very tough on lab reports.
His class is very difficult class I worked hard and it did not amount to anything I spent 80+ hours at the chemistry tutoring lab and still failed every test no matter how hard I tried. He claimed he would work with me to help me pass and never did Will not give extra credit so if you test bad do not take this class you will not pass.
This professor is a treasure who really wants to learn and understand for the future educational/career path! Listen carefully, work thoroughly through the hw and ask questions if something isnt clear. You will leave with a strong fundaments of knowledge if follow these rules. Thank you from the heart, Professor Shakya!
Shakya is enthusiastic and passionate about teaching chemistry. He presents class material in a way which makes it easy to understand if you are paying attention. He has lots of material to prepare for quizzes and exams, which makes them less difficult. He's open to questions but his style of teaching does not involve much interaction with students
Horrible, I want to cry whenever I think in all the hours I spent studying to get good grades in this class, his tests are nothing similar to whatever he talks in the class. I do not recommend this professor at all.
Big yikes, if you have options I suggest Laura Choudhury for Organic Chemistry. Shakya teaches decently, to a point where you feel like you understand but he misses a lot of key points in order to tie everything together. No matter how hard you study you either get it or you dont I took this class in 6weeks and this man has no mercy on your grade.
Dr. Shakya is one of the best professors I've had in Broward college. He does give A LOT of work before every test but it helps you to read. If you're dedicated you will earn a good grade. I wish I could have him for orgo 2 but ill be at FIU. He is a great and inspirational professor who will do his best to help you understand the material
Just RUN! Heres my honest advice he's a good teacher however the topics covered in class will be the sesame street version while the tests are not. The real problem is the stacks of homework, you will NEVER have a chance to study given you actually take your time to do the homework. Prepare to do 80 plus hours of studying.
He know what he is talking about but when you really do the work you sit there confuse. I took him for Organic I and I pass fine with a B .Organic II went horrible for me as the same way I study for him for Orgo I doesn't match with Orgo II. There are quizzes each week total of 10 and he drop the lowest. 4 exams and he drop the lowest in that one.
Smart teacher. He lectures and tests are heavy. Make sure to attend his class. Everything he says is important and will be on the test. Also, his tests are very heavy. Make sure you READ the questions. He will try to get you on really easy stuff. Make sure you attend class. It will be very had to catch on if you miss. He is good overall though.
Does NOT care about the student. Studied and tutored over 80 hours, but didn't matter becauseof the HORRIBLE EXAMS. Additional material on test than discussed in class. I had a medical emergency and was treated like I was lying. Had to withdraw to not affect my GPA. Because of that, I could NOT accept Pharm D offer that year. RUN FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!
Dr. Shakya gives a lot of homework but all the practice is exactly what you need for his exams. There's free response and multiple choice on exams and he drops the lowest test grade. He always has office hours so take advantage of them. Choose this class if you're willing to work for a good grade, not an easy A but not impossible if you do the HW
Dr. Shakya is a really great teacher! You learn a lot and every single class. He gives a lot of homework too but it prepares you well for the exams. Just pay attention in class and you will definitely pass. The class is not hard, it is just a lot of information. If you want to learn, take him, if you want easy A, don't come near. Overall, best one!
Communication through email is very slow to nonexistent. A lot of homework but the practice helps you in studying for exams. Each chapter has a quiz so stay on top of studying. Exams are mostly multiple choice and some free response (which tends to be easier). Hes not as concise in explaining as Id like, but will try again as much as you ask!
Professor Shakya is one of the most caring professors I have ever encountered. He does his best to make you understand the material and he is so organized which helps in that. He gives lots of homework and quizzes to prepare you for the exams which are not easy if you don't work your butt for them. Best professor, I respect him a lot.
Really nice and good professor, he is one of my favorite professors I have ever took. lab was pretty easy, work on a lab report every week (one will drop) and one midterm exam(similar to his lecture exams concentrating on what he explains at the beginning of class), and final research paper. I could've gotten an A if I didn't miss two lab reports:(
Professor Shakya is great at explaining his subject. Always points out the questions he is going to ask during the test. Spends extra time on those subjects. Always checks if everyone understood the concepts before moving on. Do your homework in time, dont miss classes and participate in discussions - you will definitely get tons of extra credits.
Would definitely not recommend taking his class. If you do, it is what it is, but if you have the choice take it with someone else. He is one of the most disorganized professors I've ever had, does not answer student questions without cutting them off and moving on, and never responds to emails.
Syllabus: 10 experiments in total (video 10-15 mins each). 100% online attendance bonus pts. Lab reports are 50 pts and lowest grade dropped. Missing Post/Pre-Lab is max 48 pts. Missing summary, is max 47 pts. Five quizzes (5 questions ea.) and lowest grade dropped. Honorlock quiz is bonus
During 2020 pandemic, I took Orgo Chem 1 with him (remote learning). It was a really good class; Because all the lectures are recorded, if you didn't understand something, you could always go back and relisten to it. He even went over some homework problems we didn't understand during class. He likes participation and start early on that homework.
RUN!!! I was very mislead with his ratings. I don't know how he was in person, but with online he is awful. He is very unorganized, always changes his mind, and isn't very considerate of his students. He took away the option to go back on questions of the exam, he opens assignments last minuet, and is very hard headed, like taking to a brick wall.
Have no idea what the good reviews on here are founded upon, because he is NOT a good prof. His teaching style is so scattered, and he's not considerate in the slightest- someone in the class lost wifi during an exam and couldn't complete it because the computer was frozen, but he acted like they wer lying, didn't let them finish, and gave them a D
Tests are very very hard, his teaching style was not that great to me but may be different for you, this may be your sign to stay away if you choose to listen
He is a great teacher, he knows his subject well. Other student may not like his methods and the huge amount homework he gives but I had a great time. Getting an A is not difficult but you will have to put decent effort in. He gives extra credit for extra work and perfect attendance. He also posts a list of the topics to expect in each exams.
to be honest, if you really want to pass his class you have to come to every class, pay attention and ask many questions if you don't understand. Although I did pass his class, I felt scared about taking his test. Do all the homework to get some points as well. He does give extra credit when you do worksheets. Overall, he wasn't as bad teacher.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! Avoid any class with this guy like the plague. His teaching methods, communication style, and overall demeanor are enough to drive you to the brink of madness. Save yourself the misery and find an instructor who actually gives a damn about your education and well-being.
He is very passionate about organic chemistry and it shows. Even though he has a heavy accent and unique handwriting, he is very understanding and takes his time to explain the topic. There are a lot of assignments, but they are beneficial with the exams. Do not miss class and you will be fine.
Dr. Shakya is an outstanding professor who genuinely wants his students to succeed. He explains difficult concepts in a clear and engaging way, making even the toughest topics manageable. His dedication to teaching and approachability create a positive learning environment. Highly recommend taking his class if you want to learn and grow!
Dr. Shakya is an amazing professor. Organic chemistry is hard but he makes it so simple.
This professor was clear on what we needed to do on the first day, we would do labs with our groups, which helped a lot and made the class fun. we were supposed to have a midterm, but due to weather complications we weren't able to, so our grade consisted of labs and one final exam. If you pay attention in his class you will pass.
Go over the PP, get help from tutors, go to his office hours, use the quizzes/HW to help you study for the tests. there are 11 quizzes, around 4~5 group (worksheets), and the homeworks are multiple packets. The HW is graded for completion (actually try) and the group assignments are graded for accuracy. 5 tests total. Put in EFFORT, not an E-Z A.
I took him for lab. You use the lab manual and the experiments are youtube videos. You have a pre-lab video to explain what the experiment is and have quizzes. Exams (midterm and final are proctored). There is about 9 lab reports, he is a tough grader sometimes and provides vague feedback. I recommend this professor
Organic Chemistry II is definitely a tough class, but Dr. Shakya does a great job teaching it. He explains concepts clearly and wants his students to succeed. Just know that you'll need to put in the work outside of class, but if you do, you'll learn a lot.
Take him for Orgo. Best option. Does a good job at teaching. Do the HW and study and you will be fine.
Recommend for Orgo. Do the HW and study. Overall great professor.
One of the better teachers at BC that teach orgo. I was in another class at central campus, but ended up switching to prof shankya and it was a good move. Overall, you will need to study though, but will be fine.
Overall was a fun professor but there were many times when he was lost on what we were doing. He gives a boring lecture at the beginning of each lab. The midterm and final weren't hard if you payed attention, and he gives you a study guide for the final. Lab safety was usually ignored though.
