The best math prof i ever had. Very clear lectures, fair tests
Very clear and formal math teacher. Best I've had.
nice work.
very smart prof... present the stuff clearly... marks hard tho...
his lecture is clear, easy to understand. when my quiz is marked by TA's mistakes, he don't want to change the mark for me!!!
He is a responsible teacher, but also a hard marker.
Perhaps one of the best teachers I've ever had. But don't think that will make the course easy.
Good prof, but really hard tests.
had this prof years ago, thinking back, he teaches very clearly and methodically. his tests are relatively difficult, you better know your stuff. a good proff overall.
Unlike wetton's clear notes, he walks around randomly scribbling notes on the chalkboard. Instead of going over good examples like Wetton, he has the trademark "..." and look in the book routine. He also quizzes every week, Wetton just gave you
hard quizzes/midterms. writes down whatever he says (too much note taking). nice & smart prof. fast-paced class
Exceptional teacher, he knows how to teach and is good at what he teaches. (He is a honours math teacher after all) But his quizzes and tests are not easy, the average is normally around 53%. Good Luck if you have him.
Great prof! He knows a lot and teaches a lot. His class is a great preparation for Math 320.
very clear, nice teacher. Hard marking and hard tests.
His midterms are hard, yet I appreciate these challenges.
Great teacher, he teaches honors too. However the class avg was 55%, if you work hard, you should be fine
Gupta is quite difficult, one of the people I know knew most of the material extremely well and recieved 88%. He doesn't answer hw qs in office hours but they are a good time to ask other ppl in the course if they got them. However, he is extremely smart.
Very FORMAL math teacher, u can tell he is prepared. Gives enough examples which are CLEAR and concise. MTs were HARD which is good because the final exam will usually pull up the mark. Recommended.

awesome prof! explains the material very well. notes and examples are a great help in understanding the homework. recommended.
He is just the best math instructor! His tests aren't hard if you study. Of course, he is hard compared to the other profs. But trust me, you would love math a lot more if you have him as the lecturer.
This professor is exceptional. Rajiv Gupta teaches with clarity and genuine care. He challenges you, as each midterm has one very hard question, but he is one of the best teachers I've ever had - you'll do well on the final.
Knows his math but is a bad teacher. Spends too much time on proofs and little time on application. His tests are FAR too long, he does not let you use a calculator and theres alot of aritmetic. I got a 97 is high school calc and did poorly in this class.
This professor is the so mean. On my midterm, he does not give me any marks for the correct answers. Although I clearly state my answer, he keeps saying my work is messy. I try to explain my point to him, but he ignores me. He is so ridiculous He is so stubborn. Highly not recommanded.
I loved Gupta! He's such a nice little guy! Very smart..very hard...but you will do very well on the final! Go Gupta!
Rajiv is an excellent prof, very clear, works from the ground up. He likes the class to get involved, although in this course it was somewhat rare.
great prof!very smart, explains clearly and organized notes... although mid-terms are a bit hard but just study his examples in class and do his past midterms then u'll do fine =)
Awesome Prof, knows exactly what he's talking about. Definitely recommended.
Great Prof. Really clear. Quizzes and Midterms are relatively fair... verging on difficult. Really helpful and makes the final seem like a breeze.
He's Awesome! His midterms and quizzes were challenging at times, but it really preps you for the final. He's really clear on the concepts, and paces the class well. Because he gives weekly quizzes, it forces you to keep up to date on the material and not fall behind.
His midterms were ridiculously hard and the weekly quizzes were marked unfairly and he was never helpful during office hours. AVOID!!
Good examples and very clear with the concepts. Weekly quizzes are moderately hard. He sounds sort of like Ray Romano from "Everybody Loves Raymond"
Really decent professor, knows what he's doing, but his quizzes/midterms are slightly difficult -but not because the concepts are overbearing or the questions are ridiculous. It's more that the course requires the memorization of just under a billion formulas...more biology than math...ugh
he's very good at explaining the concepts as well as making the material interesting. he demonstrates high interest about math. if you wanna learn math, find someone like him whom appreciates math and knows math.
He's a very difficult prof if you have come from Math 180, becuase he only explains things well to those who already have a calculus background. You'll have to work really hard to make sure you are caught up on his material.
I came from math 180, taught by another prof. Now I have no idea what's going on in Gupta's class. He's nice I guess, but it's frustrating when I can't follow his pace.
Good, fair prof. Gupta is very methodical and clear when it comes to teaching math and letting you know what is required for doing well in his courses. His lectures tend to run a little quickly. But he is very fair.
Unlike most math profs, he knows his material so well that he doesn't have to rely on examples to do the teaching. He explains clearly and logicaly, His notes are a bit confusing at first because of the lack of examples, but after a couple weeks they became more useful then any notes i've ever had in math.
he is an awsome teacher
This is the only prof that can actually make me become confused on stuff i already know. Quizes r marked unfairly and are hard. My grade 12 math teacher taught calculus better
a very clear prof. Second midterm was herd but not impossible. Prepared me well for the finals. learnt a lot from him.
A little difficult to comprehend. His student teachers didn't mark fairly in the beginning. Everything felt very rushed and under-developed.
very hard prof. He can be very confusing at times and doesn't give enough examples at all. Spends a lot more time talking then writing things down which is a bad thing if you don't have a good memory.
Not the most interesting lecturer, but explains concepts very thoroughly. Always well-prepared for class and answers questions effectively. Midterms and quizzes are quite difficult that usually means the term marks get scaled up in the end. Being in his class also gives you an advantage because he's the department head. I recommend him.
Good prof. teaches effectively with good examples. wants students to learn. Prepares well for final but midterms are difficult.
The worst teacher ever. You may learn, but the midterms are brutal. He writes the finals so u get a heads up, but if i were u just get a easy teacher do well in the course, and then ok on the final, instead of, ok on the final, and fail both midterms. Get a F or a C+ ur choice, ur the one that's taking the course in the first place. Good luck
his midterms are really hard, but he writes the final so you know what to expect, he really knows his stuff, he goes through everything really fast but explains it well
Nice professor!Very clear and not very hard if you can figure out all the homework.
Good explanation of concepts, takes a while to get used to his style of teaching, but him being the department head helps a lot.
Extremly difficult course, but Rajiv is a great teacher and really wants you to understand and enjoy his course.
A really good teacher; probably the best first year teacher i met. He speaks very clear and explains everything well without any hesitation or pauses. By going through his lecture, you can really tell he knows his stuff very well. His tests are ok-hard as long as you do the homework he assigned.
his lectures are understandable!
Best professor I've had so far! He really tries hard to make the course interesting and understandable, and his notes are great! His quizes and midterms aren't so bad if you keep up with the homework. You'll probably do fine in this course if you don't slack off.
Awesome prof!
Great prof! Attempts to spark enthusiasm in students and shows great interest in the subject! Notes are very clear! Tests are doable!
agree with a lot of people here. he is a great prof although i didn't do too well on the quizzes, but the final definitely brought me up. honestly, makes you love math. haha
Really good prof, teaches well so that you don't have to try and figure out the lesson from the text. His quizzes/midterms are hard, but fair. Made me like math a whole lot more!
He is NOT helpful at all.Sometimes he may come across as rude. Does not like to answer questions and does not respect his students at all. Avoid him if you can. There are better math profs that I've had compared to him.
best math prof ever! he makes you think before you just plug-in numbers into equations. his notes are very helpful so no need to flip through the textbook for additional help. you'll enjoy math after taking his class.
He teaches the material really well. If you go to his class, you will understand the material. Tests and quizzes are fair.
The best math prof at UBC. Engages the class and is constantly asking if there are any questions about the material he is teaching. Quizzes are almost identical to the homework and midterms are fair, you just need to put in the time to study for them. Prepares you very well for the final exam.
He is a really nice teacher that really tries to get you through the course. He has clear notes and is quite clear in explaining the material.
AWESOME PROF! really clear notes, very good lecturing style. exam had easy and hard questions, was fair. have yet to meet a better math prof!
This is an awesome course. The material is very challenging, but rewarding, and Dr. Gupta explains it extremely well. His enthusiasm in class was very clear, and it was obvious that he wanted students to learn. The HW was reasonable too. If you're interested in real math (with proofs!) then you should definitely take 223 over the easier 221.
hands down the best math prof you can have, just read his notes and u will A+ in the course, demanding quizzes keeps you on your toes, but they all pay off on mts and final
his explanation is crystal clear, but the course was hard. But, like all other comments, he's the best prof in math department.
Gupta is one of, if not, THE best professors I had during my first year at UBC. The way he teaches inspired me to enjoy math once again. If you have the opportunity to be in his class, take it! He makes math seem so much simpler. He also has a geeky personality, which is a great thing. And he answers all his students' questions very clearly.
Hard as hell, isn't very helpful. Should not be the math undergraduate chair, because he does not try his best to help you at all.... Avoid at all cost!
avoid
This guy is a horrible person. He has no respect for his students and he only cares about himself and his time. Avoid him.
unclear of what is expected to learn, also plays favorite
Awesome professor. As long as you're listening in class, there's always a revelation in the world of mathematics. He really makes you want to learn the stuff and is very easy to understand!!!
Notes are extremely clear, and definitely knows how to teach! One of the best math profs ever. Highly recommended.
This is a great course. Especially useful if you're interested in applied math or neat proof tools. It's too bad that this course isn't offered every year. Dr. Gupta teaches the course well and the lectures were very clear. We had short quizzes, which was much better than a midterm. Had a lot of fun in this class.
Good professor. Makes clear what you need to know and explains things clearly.
Explains concepts super well, really good notes.
Great professor, excellent notes and lectures are MANDATORY. Although this course is hard, what can you expect? It definitely sets the bar up high for students who wants to pursue mathematics in the future. Understanding and wants everyone to do well.Take this class if you want to learn & study HARD. Don't do anything silly! :-) Thanks professor G!
Gupta provides very good notes, with lots and lots of pictures (he loves pictures) but they very useful and his notes are easy to comprehend. One can take down his notes and read over them later on and clearly understand the concepts of the topic. The problem i hate is the weekly quizzes which according to the statistics he provides on his site,
Good Prof, reasonably easy to understand. Sometimes does the calculations in his head, so its a little hard to follow. Do the homework and you should be fine!
Math is math. He explains math extremely well but I definitely recommend doing all the homework problems since quizzes are based a lot of the time from the exact questions. Overall, I found him to be a mediocre teacher.
He has taught this course for so many years he has it down pretty well. It's just unfortunate that the course itself is very challenging for most people.
Dr. Gupta is a clear instructor and for the most part interesting. The tests were fair and if you practice a little from the book you'll find most of the test questions are very similar. All quiz questions are pulled from the textbook so it pays to have practiced from the textbook. Studying involves more training/practicing than actual learning.
I found the ratings to be very misleading...i don't find this prof good at all, AVOID!
horrible.
Excellent prof. Explains concepts clearly and provides lots of examples. Very helpful as well. Exams are fair and are based on concepts you learnt Textbook is useful for additional help. This is a tough class, so every bit of extra work is worth it.
I spoke with this instructor multiple times during the terms regarding my concerns and he brushed me off every time. I am an A-level student but the midterms were way too short. Despite receiving full grades and teaching material to others in my workshops, I was sharply penalized in exams (which test efficiency over ability). Gupta offered 0 help.
Fairly difficult course but he teaches it very clearly with great notes and examples. Gives fair quizes that force you to stay up to date with the material. Your grade will be directly proportional to the amount of time you put into the course.
Avoid! Super hard and difficult to understand his lectures!
Unclear lectures. Not very nice - I find him to be rude and disrespectful to his students. Avoid if possible.
Worst prof I've ever had at UBC. Incredibly rude and harsh to students. Lectures are confusing and hard to follow- had to basically teach myself all the course material. Would AVOID if possible.
