Very Hard! I teach myself the material. Very mean also.

have to learn material on own
I can not understand hardly anything he says since his accent is so heavy. Very mean and volatile.. can not teach! Tests are hard and you have to learn everything on your own... good luck passing.
The only way to describe him is awful. Be prepared to teach yourself problems that are near impossible. At review sessions if you ask a question he tells you that you should already know that. Unapproachable, hard to understand.
Yeah class is hard, but he doesn't do that bad of a job. As long as you keep up with some of the HW, you should do ok. Rapkin is a cool guy.
Absolutely dreadful. Words cannot describe...stay away...
This professor is insanely difficult for this already difficult course. Nice guy but unclear on assignments and tests. I'd suggest finding another professor unless this is your only class and you can devote all your free time on teaching the material to yourself.
Terrible Teacher.. I had to teach everything to myself. I dreaded going to class. I have empathy for all of you people who have him at 8:00 and 9:05 next semester!
Do not take him! Stay away. His directions are not always clear and his questions are usually missing words. Just avaoid if you can.
HORRIBLE teacher! too much work - doesn't give enough credit for all the work. instructions complicated. shouldn't be a teacher. i'm just glad i'm done with it
Death! Do NOT take this class if at all possible. Dr. Pal is very smart, but should be working and using his knowledge, not trying to teach it to students.
Send him back to India! I am a jr. and he is by far the worst teacher I have had in my life. He is smart, but still does not know how to share his knowledge. I feel sorry for anyone who has to suffer through his class.
Dont listen to these idiots. Raktim tells u exactly what is going to be on the tests,he also gives practice exams that are almost exactly like the test. Theres like 6 HW and 3 projects in a semester so not alot of work. Also, for the projects, if u go to his office he will practically do them for u.
An easier prof with a willingness to help. He will tell you everything that will be on his test and tell you how to do all of his homework but if you can learn some material on your own you may want to take another prof.
Going into this class, thought it would be hard, but Dr. Pal teaches at a really good rate and gives plenty of examples. Few HW assignments and tests are very easy if you do the practice test. Very smart, very helpfull, takehim if you can.
Nice guy who is willing to help you out
One of the toughest classes that I've ever taken. Class time is usually pointless but he takes attendence so go. The only way to survive: visit him during his office hours. His lectures were so vague that when I went to do the homework, I got lost a couple steps in because it was a tricky variation. STUDY STUDY! I have him again for 300..ahh!
Not that hard of a class, but VERY HARD to understand a single word he says. Indian accent and very unclear. 3/4 of the class is gone before we even start because going is pointless!
Here's the deal. His lectures are pointless, unclear readings directly from powerpoint. He is very hard to understand and 3/4 of the class leaves in the first 5 minuts. Extremely boring and pointless to go to class. Terrible teacher no matter how smart he is.
Probably the one of the most boring classes i've taken at JMU. Reads right of the powerpoints. He gives 8 question quizes on like 4 chapters so if you miss one your screwed. However, not very hard, if you do the homework and study quizes, the test questions are about the same
This teacher is a nice guy and gets a bad rap. The material is tough, but he is more than willing to help. Classes are boring and tests are moderately difficult.
A complete jerk. His lectures are pointless and he is completely unift for teaching. Impossible to understand or even stay awake. Terrible in explaining information, harsh grading especially on project. AVOID, he is a HORRIBLE professor!

Nice guy. Awful teacher. Whoever decided to place him in COB 300 should be fired immediately. It doesn't matter if he's willing to help. The fact that class time is absolutely worthless is bad for the students, COB 300, and the College of Business.
I like Pal! I think he is nice and cares about his students. He is always willing to help and his tests are straight-forward. Kinda boring, but he tries his best.
Pal is a really nice little man who i am in love with! dont write mean things about him HES SO CUTE!!!!! he tries really hard its not his fault operations isnt fun!!
the most caring man I have ever met. I thought his class was easy people who rate him bad are stupid...maybe if you came to class and stayed you wouldnt fail!!
at first it seems bad...but once you get to know Pal he is a really sweet man who tries hard. He helps a lot with the business plan and is very organized.
nice guy, but he can't teach worth a ****. i feel bad for him each class.
Although the class is boring. I have to admit that Pal isn't a bad professor as a lot of people make him out to be. He understands what he's talking about and he explains things pretty well. The only barrier was his accent but do the homework/practice problems and you should be fine. A nice man and willing to help anytime.
i had to take him because of placement - if i had a choice, i would've never taken him. doesn't know how to explain things worth crap. smart guy, but doesnt deserve to teach at jmu. at least i dont have a chance of getting him again. avoid him at all costs

the worst teacher you will ever have
Worst teacher I have ever had. He knows the material but he just cant teach it to save his life. No one pays attention because it isnt worth it, you have to reteach yourself anyway. Cant understand what he says. Dont bother going to class, just go over the powerpoints and examples, thats what he does in class anyway, and yo ucould do it better.
Its a tough class and he doesn't make it any easier. Be prepared to do a lot of self-teaching. Gotta say he is helpful during office hours though.
AWFUL AWFUL teacher. He is the worst teacher on the face of the earth, and yes I went to class(and stayed in class), and yes I went to office hours. He is completely unhelpful, absolutely not a nice person - and 110% deserves to NEVER teach again. Doesn't explain anything - strictly READS off his power point. Most boring man on earth, and you won'
Smart man, terrible teacher.
Why is he still here?!
Hard class. Lots of work. He is very helpful and explains things well. Actually, he is not as bad as some others think... you have to work hard and go to the class.
This class turned out to be much better than I expected. Tough class, but he takes good care of his students.
Not as bad as everyone makes him out to be! this is just a hard class in general- you are going to have to work no matter what teacher you get. VERY helpful. such a nice guy, wants his students to do well
This guy is really nice. But he definetly has some problems communicating. Sometimes he rushes and hes impossible to understand. Class is hard. Go to class.
avoid this man at all costs... his class is a complete disaster. Absolutely impossible to understand, and makes it very hard to be successful.
He knows his subject very well. He is well-organized and prepared for the class. Never talks about personal things. I think he is a good professor though demanding.
he tries so hard to be a good professor; he's hard to understand and probably makes operations harder than it has to be, but he's a nice guy and he smells great :)
I have a 2.8GPA...andI find this class easy.Seriously, his quizzes and tests are SO fair, the average is always an 80 or above..so how can everyone say that is hard??ok he's not the BEST teacher, but he really wants his students to do well and always offers to help and he asks everyday in class if anyone needs further clarification. He's great.
I do not understand these reviews at all! Pal was awesome. Yes, he can be hard to understand at times, and yes the class is really boring, but he makes a hard subject soooo easy! He tells you exactly what you need to know for Quizzes and Tests, and you do so many problems in class that they are easy As. Honestly, if you get Pal, don't worry.
at first i was nervous bc of all the bad ratings, but he really is a nice person who tries very hard to be a great teacher and get to know everyone! we had 7 quizzes which help prepare you for the tests and he drops the lowest one. 3 tests...study the course packet and you will be fine!
Had him for both 291 and 300. Very nice guy who gets a bad rep on here. He goes over each and every problem and he will ask the class if what he said is clear. If you go to class and do the homework you will get a B or higher.
His course packet is very helpful, but the book is completely useless - his lectures are ridiculously boring , and the quiz and test questions are straightforward for the most part.
Pal wasn't as bad as he was made out to be. He's actually a really nice guy. He wants his students to do well, but the material can be tough at times. The textbook is pretty much useless, however his book of powerpoints are extremely helpful. Definitely put aside some time to study for his quizzes and exams. When in doubt, NONE OF THE ABOVE =answer
I am not a fan of Pal. He seemed nice but he was always a bit nervous while lecturing and he talked so fast it was hard to understand. If you go to his office hrs he is more willing to go slow and clarify things but class time was useless. Don't even bother buying the textbook, just use the course pack.
Tough subject but there is no lack of effort on his part. Fast speech is a minus but doesn't put a big dent in what you should be able to get out of the class.
Pal is really not that bad.. he is pretty hard to understand at first and the class is just hard anyway but if you do the practice problems you'll be fine. The review tests/quizzes are just like the real ones. Hes really helpful too if you go to office hours and not just the day before the test..
I liked him. Again, the textbook is worthless but it seems like the slides were good. Can't be too sure, I never bought them. I got a B in the class without really doing anything, so with some work it shouldn't be too hard to get an A.
Dr. Pal is a good teacher. He is extremely helpful and goes out of his way to grade fairly and make sure everybody understands what is going on. The only thing that makes him a hard teacher is because at first he is hard to understand. Once you get used to his voice and speed of speech it is fine. He is really funny too.
Class is more about finding what form he put his answer in (usually none of the above) then finding the right answer. This is a bad thing.
Very good teacher; cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. If you go to class and follow the course packet, you will do well. He knows how to teach and will make sure you understand the material, which at times is very difficult.
The first two tests are straight from the course packet, all I can say is good luck on the final. I never bought the book which was fine until we got to the final. I learned a lot during class but was incredibly intimidated during office hours. He means well.
This class is heavy on statistics. The professor tries, but is not always helpful. His grading is more subjective than most. I was told more than once that my insights were good, but why didn't you think of this? The book is useless. No surprises on the exam, but very long.
He is a very good teacher, and holds a lot of interest in teaching the class. If you give him the patience, follow up with the reading and homework - you will be in good shape! use his office hours - big help!
He is a good teacher, but not an easy guy to talk to. His tests are somewhat difficult, but if you study you'll do fine. He's not friendly, but if you don't let it get to you then you will do well.
It's a hard class no matter what teacher you have, but he does a good job of getting you through it and preparing you for the final. The beginning of the class is a little rough, but it gets a lot better. The hardest parts are the work on excel, which are not thoroughly explained. Overall though, one of the best possible teachers for 291.
Quizzes are very tough- you have to stay on top of the reading and definitely use the course packet. Tests aren't quite as bad but they do include material from group articles. At times he can be very difficult to understand and can come across as cold. He's a nice guy but you definitely have to make the effort with him.
Dr. Pal can be seen as unfriendly sometimes but actually if you spend time to talk to him, he's not that bad though. Operations is hard and a lot of information. But he puts a lot of effort to help us if we come to the office hours. Focus on the Course Pack. It's the Bible for Quizzes and Tests. The Final was impossible so study hard.
He is very enthusiastic about the courses he teaches, but his accent is difficult to understand at first. He also speaks loudly enough so that I hold my ears in the front row. He will help you if you attend his office hours. Lectures are all based on a preprinted course packet, which you must have. Quizzes are easy and tests are difficult.
Pal isn't as bad as some would make him out to be, just for the love of god go to office hours if you need help, HE WILL GIVE IT. The only part I would say really sucked was the quizzes do NOT reflect how prepared you are for the tests, they are extremely easy. Study the homeworks and the book questions, follow course pack and you should be fine.
Probably the best 291 professor out there. It's an extremely difficult class but he is really straightforward and simplifies everything so you understand it. Difficult tests but as long as you practice the problems after every class it's manageable
Says he is more than happy to help, but doesn't give you the time of day when you need it. His test are nothing like his homework and practice problems. I ended up hiring my own tutor and still couldnt pass his test.
He is a good teacher, always willing to help students during the office hours, so just go to the office when you you have trouble. there would be quizzes and tests and attandence required, no extra credit, only drop 1 quiz at the end. But this is a hard cource including math and excel models, so I guess I only can get B or B+, not a easy A class.
Raktim Pal IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I have had at JMU. The material he teaches from the course packet relates to the textbook but is useless for quizzes, exams and the final. He asks very detailed ?'s. I recommend reviewing the textbook before class and reread the textbook and course packet after class. Practice the given problems. GOOD LUCK
Pal is the WORST teacher I've ever had at JMU. His accent is very thick and all he does is read the slides in class. The classes are dreadfully long. The exams and quizzes ask very specific, detailed questions. Several hours of recorded lecture you have to watch. The average class test grade was in the 60's.
Pal is tough but not as bad as the reviews say. Will give help in office hours, not so much in class. The material is interesting but you really have to work to get a good grade.
Very boring classes. All lectures, about 7 quizzes. Never used the book. Only used the coursepack. Tests have questions from coursepack and online quizzes and some from the book. Pretty boring material honestly. COB300 is irrelevant for CIS majors honestly.
Ops sucks no matter who you get but he is one of the worst. Very degrading in class, but helpful one-on-one so go to office hours. Tests and quizzes are heavily from the course packet so if you legit memorize it you will be fine. Just get through it and move on to your major, no matter what ops and 300 sucks so try to make the most of it!
The reviews for Pal are a lot worse than they probably should be. As long as you really study the course packet you'll do fine. I didn't open the textbook once. Tests are basically 100% from course packet. He seems harsh in class but if you go to his office hours you can tell he really cares to know each of his students and help them out. Not bad!
Literally the worst teacher ever. Yes, he will "help" you during the office hours, but he doesn't explain things clearly. His tests are ridiculously hard and unless you UNDERSTAND the material 100% you are not going to have enough time to double check. He "assumes" you know the subject by yourself. AVOID HIM!!!
Lectures are long and dry unless you really like the material. Very accessible outside of class though and will help you work through any problems you encounter. Even though he's difficult, I'd recommend him over other professors for COB 300 that I've heard people take.
Raktim Pal, which half the department call him Ratkim, is an overly difficult professor. This man takes pleasure in failing students from an increasingly difficult course load and issues exams that are designed to run out the clock and destroy your hard work. I would recommend taking a different professor if you want a decent grade. Too hard...
Very difficult class, but Raktim is one of the better teachers for this course. Tests are difficult, but not unreasonable. Go to class and you shouldn't get lower than a B-.
Pal's lectures are so dry and boring. For the life of me I could not connect any of the material he was teaching us, it was confusing. He's a pretty nice guy and wants to help you, but Operations in general sucks. For his exams, make sure you know how to do the math stuff, and just memorize the concepts because none of that will make sense.
291 is a rough class. No attendance grade but you're going to struggle if you skip. 3 tests, 3 assignments and a final. Get him to check the assignments before you turn them in, it helps your grade. PASS sessions are helpful. Study for tests by doing all course pack problems multiple times. Textbook probs are on tests sometimes so do those once
JMU Faculty call him Ratkim.. has a thick accent and his lectures are all over the place. Moves very fast and can't be bothered with questions. Exams are exceedingly tough and have lengthy problems with grading being too particular. Just because he has lots of professional qualifications doesn't make him a good professor. Your GPA will take a hit
He's def not the worst Ops prof. You do not want Torabi. Don't learn much in class. Quizzes aren't too bad. Tests a little harder but still manageable. Make sure you study course Pack... He can come off has mean but he doesn't realize he is. Kinda funny when he gets confused
One of the better COB 300 Operations professors. More than half of each test are numerical problems so just make sure you know how to the do the math because that can make or break you. Study the course pack and you'll make it through. Quizzes are difficult.
Dr. Pal is regarded as the hardest 291 professor you can take. Your grade consists of 3 tests, 3 excel exercises and the final. You need to study thoroughly to do well on the exams and make sure you do the practice problems he assigns out of the textbook.
COB291 is a hard class in general. I think that Dr. Pal seemed to be one of the better professors. He was a little hard to understand in the beginning, but you get used to it. Just study really hard bc the tests are the majority of your grade. Also, go to his office hours because you won't do well if you don't study 10x more than any other class
He is the best professor out of the Operations professors. He knows the information and does teach it clearly; the thing is that there's so much information to learn in so little time. Content breadth > content depth. 2 Tests + Final Exam, along with 7 online quizzes via Canvas, which you have 20-25 minutes to take per quiz. Focus on course packet!
By far the worst professor I've had at JMU. Painfully long and dry lectures every single class where he just reads off his slides for 75 minutes. Tests are hard bc of how much material is on each one (100 pages in the coursepack). Half of each exam is based on math questions so focus on those (god knows you won't understand his concept questions).
This Professor assigns too much busy work compared to his colleagues. He got called out constantly in lectures by students about his teaching methods and insane workload. Tests are overly hard although are doable but god knows theres not enough time for the complexity of his questions. We had to call him out several times for him to get the point.
This is by far the hardest class I've ever taken. Your mental health and gpa will suffer. 291 is hard no matter what but Pal made it obvious that the course could have been so much clearer with a better prof. The class was truly awful and miserable. Exams are nearly impossible and nothing like work in class. DO NOT TAKE
He just sucks, good luck if you have him and watch your GPA drop
291 is already hard as it is and he makes it harder somehow. Nice guy but avoid if possible.
i mean he tries? not really tho. he just tells you a page makes you read the problem and guess how to do it. he tries to answer questions but its just a hard class. i honestly don't think he's the worst just go to PASS and you should be semi okay. he takes attendance every day and you have to pay to do your online homework
Professor Pal is not a bad teacher. His class may seem overlong and uninteresting at times, but you will learn if you go. That being said his tests are far too long for the time period allotted and often times have confusing phrasing. I had a C+ in the class before the final, which tanked my grade due to the sheer difficulty. Good luck in 291.
291 is very hard and Raktim doesn't make it any easier. He takes attendance every class, but you're pretty screwed if you don't go anyways. Tests are extremely difficult. You have to pay to take online quizzes. You probably won't have much of a choice, but you should avoid him if possible.
Nice guy but seems to be too smart to be teaching this class. He thinks everyone knows more than they do. I get that this is a hard class but he surely doesn't assist with that reputation. He seems accessible outside of class but in office hours is short when asked questions and just tries to move you along as fast as possible.
simply does not understand how college kids learn. reads PowerPoint slides every class and then does questions and the class gets 50% right. the professor then gets mad and says it is our fault. Maybe teach better? IDK. nice guy but doesn't understand college kids
One of the worst professors I have ever had. He just reads off the slides in class which is super boring and scolds us saying things are common sense and we should know it. Other professors in this section are good but Raktim is terrible. He should not be teaching cob 300
Look Dr. Pal gets alot of heat for being boring during lecture, which I COMPLETLEY UNDERSTAND. His class is not really necessary in general. But this is why hes actually one of the best. All his lectures are recorded and posted, they are a carbon copy of the ones he gives in class, making review very easy. He also never throws in trick questions.
This is the worst professor I've EVER had. Trust that the exams are NOTHING like the notes and homework problems. He expects everyone to understand what he is saying and looks at you silly when you don't. The lowest rating 1 doesn't go low enough... low like his personality. If you have the choice, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
One of the worst professors ive had. His slides are terrible, and long for no reason. His lectures make it impossible to listen to him for more than a minute without dosing off. His online lectures are the same thing, 3 20 minute videos of endless yapping in a monotone voice. Impossibly hard tests that do not relate to anything learned in class.
Worst professor I have ever had. Made us have class during a gas leak and provided little to no communication. His lectures are just the top hat that he assigns and is not helpful during office hours. Interrupts you when you are talking and acts like you are dumb if you don't understand something. Made an already hard class (COB 300) even harder.
Terrible professor. I have no idea what he's talking about in class because he explains things so poorly. Held class after a gas leak with no email telling us if class was still on. 2 exams and a little bit of homework. Exam 1 was on 7 chapters and the questions were so specific. I would not take him if I had the choice.
If your transcript has too high a grade There is a man who offers aid Raktim Pal, Showker's best He stands five feet above the rest Not rain nor hail nor leak of gas Can make this man cancel class Skipping school I would not dare Raktim will know you were not there The others cannot compare to Pal If they don't fail you, Raktim shall
Wanna fail? Take Pal! Very rude to students asking questions. English is definitely not his first language which is ok, but he should not be a professor. His lectures don't make any sense and his tests don't either. Don't skip class or you he will fail you. Good luck if you're stuck with him for 300, otherwise - DONT TAKE HIM
A lot of his bad reviews are from people who don't try. I have a C- and that's on me. He isn't the best professor, but nowhere near the worst. He cares more than he shows in class and wants you to come to his office hours to get help.
He is a former 291 prof so expect similar concepts. I struggled in 291 and found this easier. Expect to learn all of the units outside of the classroom, he makes this easy because essentially every lecture is recorded for you. Just sucks because attendance is mandatory, and you won't learn much in class. His review sessions are A+ but very rare.
Worst COB 300 ops professor, doesn't explain topics clearly in class and gets mad when you ask questions. When the exam scores were lower than expected, he told us to put in more effort instead of curving or adjusting his future exams.
Raktim might've been the worst professor I've had at JMU. Genuinely, his class is structured around laziness. Post lectures online and doesn't bother to teach. We have covered PARTIAL information for maybe only half of the total classes this semester. Flipped classroom doesn't work for some students, have some respect for our education.
i take him for cob 300. hes the actual worst. we have ALL 15!!! 15 cumulative chapters on our final regarding conceptual AND theres math for ALL 15 chapters. Refuses to give us any sort of cheat sheet because its "too distracting." Passive aggressive and is condescending.
Raktim tries to be nice, but isn't physically wired to have normal human interactions. Class is already hard and he made it no better by his inability to understand how college kids learn. Tests are extremely difficult and blames the student's when the test mean's are so low. Other cob 300 ops profs. allocate by giving cheat sheets,he gives nothing
You are better off teaching yourself the content from the class. I got like 50% on his in class assignments, but after reviewing the homework and why I got answers wrong and teaching myself the content it made sense. Got a 96,92, and 86 on his exams, but the in class questions and 300 project brought me down to a B+. Lectures are boring and useless
Pal has been one of the worst professors I have ever taken at JMU. He expects you to "100% master" every part of operations. He is extremely unforgiving on exams and tells you to come to his office hours but then yells at you for not remembering one part of his 1 hr and 15 min lecture. Won't allow cheat sheets or anything for exams like other profs
Tbh, Dr. Pal is the chillest Indian I know but his operations class is hard af. He gives no extra credit, his tests are really hard, and no cheat sheets for his exam. If you're taking him, you are cooked ngl.
all i have to say is a 15 chapter cumulative final with no cheat sheet. good luck
Avoid at all costs. Worst professor in cob. All exams insanely difficult and final is 15 cumulative chapters with no cheat sheet even though all other ops sections get one. Would not wish this guy on my worst enemy. Have fun listening to his dreadfully boring lectures that he makes harder than normal. If you have him may god be with you.
One of if not the worst professor I've had in my three years at JMU. Not only are his lectures painfully boring, but they are overall useless. The only reason class is mandatory is he does pointless in class questions that are a part of your grade. I know you aren't able to choose your 300 professors, but if you get him good luck.
All there is to know is that your tested on fifteen chapters for your final with zero cheat sheet. This guy thinks you actually care about operations and that you know way more than you know. Good luck trying to study for the final it's the most defeating thing I've done in my time here.
Raktim Pal made me sad. His class had way too much homework for what this class needed to have, and attendance was mandatory since he had tophat questions every class with barely any time to finish them. He does flipped classes so you're basically teaching yourself, and classes are pointless since he just goes through some of the slides. Good luck
This guy is not helpful at all. During class he will make you feel dumb if you don't understand him, not respectful of our time because he is always starting and ending class late. I basically taught myself the entire course. You can pass the class but you're going to have to teach it yourself. Also, a lot of homework that does not help
The lectures are very boring and the study guides give more material then you need. However you can get additional points on homework. His TopHat also gives a good idea of what tests may look like. If you can solve numerical problems you'll be fine.
AWFUL. lectures are boring and unhelpful and test cover so many chapters you can't study it all. no curves, only thing that saved my grade was the homework. test 1:7 chs 30 questions, test 2: 5 chs 30 questions, final:15 chs 60 questions. Doesn't help narrow down what to study and expects you to know every detail. Simply pray you will pass this.
He does not play about his time. If there's 5 minutes left and he's has nothing to talk about he'll start a new chapter. Class is challenging but not the most challenging one I have taken. He does not like many ideas and makes the business plan much harder than it has to be.
Very tryhard professor.
He is a very nice guy but his lectures are very boring and he isn't very friendly or helpful in office hours,
Not the worst thing ever if you get him but his lectures are often not super interesting and he will do whatever it takes to use every minute of every single class, often times goes a couple minutes late. Mostly have to self teach but the homework and tophat helps. The exams are honestly fair but material is just not super interesting.
