very good teaching skills. he's very hands on and interacts with the class a lot. the class is really fun because his way of teaching is more oriented towards having fun while learning.
he made lectures pretty fun to listen to, and despite the difficulty of tests, he made chemistry much easier than it could have been otherwise. he's great about checking his email and answering questions, and very fair with grading.
he's really funny!! he just says the darndest things! hah! fun guy! he's not so easy on the tests... gotta study for weeks before the test to do good... get ready for a lot of studying!
lectures are rather boring, and posted on web. exams are open book, but still require studying to get good grade. recommend going to lecture b/c web notes not fully detailed, but goes over in lecture
his tests are hard, but a very cool prof.
very interactive lectures. hard tests, even though it's open book. just pay attention. take advantage of the power point and lectures.
I took this class in 2002 and he was the worst teacher that I've ever had at UH. Maybe he's changed, but I would definitely never take another class from him.
Good class experiments, makes powerpoint interesting, good sense of humor, and german accent
Horrible teacher
I have no idea what this guys says most of the time but we make balloons explode so the class is basically whatever.
He is a funny guy with an accent. The class may be boring because it's all powerpoint lectures BUT he makes it "entertaining" with a lot of experiments. He is very helpful (if you ask him for help) Ex: he replies to emails promptly. The class is not too hard, must study and understand lectures and if not just ask a question!
Very knowledgeble and goes thru things step by step. But lecture is super boring and the tests are hard.
You need to go to lecture to get the notes because the power points that are posted online only explain half of it.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. the reasons his ratings do not support this is because he is FUNNY so people tend to like him. He does blow stuff up and all which is interesting but he CAN NOT TEACH well at all. Teaches rote memorizations rather than trends and does so very poorly. His writing and english also suck. Although the other teacher is bad too so??
I like kaiser because he is all around nice guy, helpful if you ask him and replies to emails promptly. Hardly use text and he does do a lot of experiments. His class may be boring because it's all power point but he's enthusiastic and tries to make chem fun!
his accent is horrible..cant understand what hes saying most of the time..if you request for things such as the time and place of the finals he wont give it to you...
Good teacher, lets you use your book during exams and tries to do experiments during class. Cannot understand accent though.
COOL IN CLASS EXPERIMENTS. HIS LECTURES ARE ALL POWERPOINT.
Never went to class and got a B+. ALl lectures are online and exactly what he says. Class moves very slowly. Tests are straightforward and easy. Hard to understand at times. Fun to go to class to watch his experiments.
He is a horrible teacher. Does not explain anything, no practice exams, nothing. I never got below a B+ in my life, and I got a C+ in his class. His accent is strong, and test are very difficult. If you see Ralf Kaiser run, and do not take this class. All these other people are lying, this teacher is among the worst I ever experienced.
He's a very nice guy. Everything is pretty straight forward from the powerpoint slides. Its not necessary to read the textbook unless you don't know much about chemistry. HIS CLASS EXPERIMENTS ARE FUN TO WATCH!
cool experiments! study the handouts. you study - you pass.you do not study - you will fail!
Interesting class with lots of examples. He is a very funny teacher with a lot of spunk. Has a strong German accent. His lectures are all powerpoint but you may need the textbook to comprehend the material very well. He does hand out study guides that resemble the 25 question test. However passing is a MUST STUDY and do it EARLY. In all, good guy.
I do not know man; I got an A- in O-chem 272, and A in o-chem 273, but a C+ in this class. That says enough about this guy.
Fun class with lots of experiments. He will make you study hard. Very organized, one practise exam for each chapter; you must study hard to pass this class. Funny German accent.
Although class is not mandatory, go anyways for the experiments. If you pay attention and study and look over the slides ahead of time you'll do fine
Easy class; Kaiser uses power point presentations; very helpful prof; he answers emails very quickly; always go to office hours for help. Study early for the exams; exams are similar to handouts. he should blow of more balloons!!
He is not helpful at all. He would complain how stupid you are; when you forward him a question. He has no character in teaching.
He lectures off of PowerPoint slides which are available online so attendance isn't mandatory; however, he increases the exam difficulty if he notices students leaving during class. Exams are extremely hard(proof: class avg at 70%). The textbook and solutions manual offer are easier to understand and are more helpful than his explanations.
I always go to class and got A's; Kaiser has a funny German accent. Seems, though, there are lots of slackers in the class: evidence: class attendance is only 2/3. Kaiser requires you to know the experiments from class (he asks in the exam!).
Go to class for his experiments! You'll need to know them for the test. His practice exams online are VERY similar to the problems on the test. So just memorize the process on how to do the practice exams and you'll be fine. Class got boring towards the end. 3 midterms, 1 final, 25% each...not bad class, would recommend it
Kaiser has a German accent but u get used to it. He has limited office hours so if you want help see the TAs. Lectures can get boring because no experiments. Do practice exams to do well in this class. The exams are almost exactly the same as the practice so its pretty easy course. Recommend you take him
3 midterms and 1 final. Each test is 25% of your grade. There is no homework. He has a practice test for each chapter I would recommend studying at least a week before the tests and remember the experiments in class!!!. Don't buy the book you don't use it. A curve in the class that will help your grade. Don't slack off and you'll be able to pass
Not helpful, difficult to understand, not fun, i loved chemistry prior to his class. i studied, read, attended class, did practice tests, got a C+
exams are DIFFICULT, but Kaiser prepares handouts for each exam; these handouts are very similar to the actual exams. be prepared to study hard: Kaiser hates slackers in his class.
the best class ever!
do the practice exam he posts on the website will be helpful! but you need to study on your own as well.. Chemistry never be easy.. he replies email promptly so if you have chem problems just ask him or TAs.. he does not like slacker...
Funny guy with sense of humor. Always go for the experiments, but u must study hard for the midterms. always go to office hours for his help; TAs are often useless
TAKE FROM SOMEONE ELSE!!! He does not teach out of the book->>really difficult because his problems are different than what the book supplies. Found myself hardly opening the book and soley going off his powerpoints. I also lost a lot of test points do to irrelevant astronomy questions. Barely got a B-. in chem 162, easily got a B+.
He tries his best to make lecture interesting with experiments (which he asks about on exams!) and jokes. He responds really quickly to e-mails, but he's got limited office hours so visit the TAs for help. Do practice exams, follow along on the handouts, read the chapters, ask questions and you should be fine.
Kaiser's actually really good. He's pretty clear usually, and answers questions directly. He moves at a quick pace, but all his lectures are posted online. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he let us have open-book exams if there was high attendance, so go to class. He blows stuff up too, it's pretty fun.
Always makes the point that the university textbook is crap. High emphasis on doing his practice exams. Was very fast moving and challenging for a freshman level course. blows stuff up for about the first half of the semester too
Pretty cool prof with a german accent. you can pass the class if you are prepared to study hard. always study the practice exams and ask questions.. yes. he has limited office hours. questions in the exams are similar to the handouts. only problem: he should not teach when he is sick (difficult to understand); he shall stay in bed.
The good of Kaiser: blows stuff up (keeps you interested), lectures online, open book (if enough people attend lectures--we had ALL open book tests!), no homework, practice exams practically 90% on the actual test/midterms (has some curve balls in there), pretty understandable. Seemingly bad: has a slight accent, moves a bit fast.
All tests are MC and each has 30 Questions. The easiest way to pass this class is to study the practice exams well!!Tests are open-book but dont think it really helps, still need to study in order to pass. I think his accent is not a big problem...he is a nice guy overall.=]
One explanation, that's pretty much all you get. The rest is up to you and the exams are ridonc. Rubio's a great chem prof, if they ever give him a 161 class I'd jump on it.
Kaiser is a nice teacher and him and his TA was extremely helpful with exams. Exams were open book but not anymore cause people cheated. It's on you if you want to do good, study prac. exams!
Kaiser was really upset, but they should not have cheated. These guys are idiots! - Experiments are fun to watch.
Good professor. He is really into teaching, or so it seems. I feel like he cares, and the exams are generally easy. He spoon feeds you information if your to lazy to read the book, but regardless of reading or not, his test is very similar to practice exam. TA was awesome and nice, I recommend taking his class over vcic.
Good teacher, teaches at kind of a fast pace, but goes over the difficult material more thoroughly. Occasionally does pretty cool experiments along with his lectures. USED to have all open-book tests until someone got caught cheating with it. But just study the practice exams and you'll be fine.
Hard class, not helpful, never answers emails
He's easy to understand. Tests are somewhat hard but is VERY similar to the practice exam. He's better compare to other teachers.Highly recommended
Classes are pretty interesting but the exams are quite hard. The textbook is about half of the info you need. The other half comes from class so you prob. want to go to class. Review sessions are helpful and you should do the practice exams as they are quite similar to the exam
Slides aren't very helpful for the exams. good thing is there were multiple so it was taking 2 chapters at a time. has cool experiments but it gets boring at the end. study the past exams a week before your exam!
Read the textbook because his slides do not help. He does lots of experiments. Go to study sessions if possible, they help a lot. If anything, read the book.
Has a East European accent, not to hard to understand. Could use better slides, but he often makes up for it with examples. Andrew, the TA is awesome! Very helpful. Quite funny too (very dry sense of humor.)
Overall alright. I would highly recommend going to class and the study sessions. The TA Andrew Turner is super helpful so go to him if you need help! Study the practice exams well and you should do fine on the exams!
Overall a moderately difficult class. I think if I read ahead of class and studied more, I would've gotten a better grade but I still averaged a B which isn't so bad. His accent along with how fast he teaches can be hard to understand but his tests are based off the practice exams he provides which isn't too bad. Dreading the final though..
Not too shabby. Gives practice tests that prepare you well. I also hear there's review sessions. But I cry at night cause I can't go at 7:30 pm. Waaah.
If you were in AP chemistry during high school, you may be able to keep up with this class, but otherwise it will take a lot of work outside of class. The pace of the lectures was too quick for me. Only the review sessions are good in which the TA, Andrew, goes over the practice exams. Andrew is a great TA but goes at a fast pace as well.
Overall, he's an ok professor. Expects you to study book on own though (since he teaches solely through Powerpoint lectures and models). Test-wise, he does curve but that doesn't make too much of a difference. (I have to admit he acts funny at points :p)
Kaiser moves quickly so be prepared to pay attention. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS. They are incredibly helpful. TA Andrew's review sessions are so worth it and he explains in 5 minutes something that takes Kaiser 45 minutes. Andrew, I know you're reading this. You're awesome.
Not necessary to go to class, because I find it to be more effective just looking over the ppt/textbk myself. Class lectures cover the material really fast -honestly it's because chem generally has a lot of material that needs to be covered. The exams sometimes include trivia questions which are in my opinion are pointless, irrelevant, and unfair.
Good class. "Separates the men from the boys." Kaiser is an intelligent and kind man, but his PowerPoint slides and lectures are hard to understand. Go to class, and read the textbook after (it really helps). Make sure you understand most of the chapter GOING INTO the review session and fine-tune everything. Andrew Turner (TA) is awesome!
Pretty good class - loved the experiments. Practice exams help to get a good grade. Attendance is not mandatory, but you should go to understand the ppt slides.
Remembered entering the class Kaiser said you need to study 15 hrs/week to do well. Honestly I like Kaiser, its interesting and has a sense of humor. BUT USE PRACTICE EXAMS! Its awesome when Andrew (TA) subs or does review sessions. His teaching is the main reason I am passing. Thank you so much Andrew! I know you & your mom are reading this :)
this class is really difficult, however, i'm passing thanks to andrew! :D I LOVE YOU DUDE!
If u wnt to do gud on the exam, DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS, attend the review session, read txtbook & go 2 class! His tests are similar to the practice exam, & the review sessions taught by Andrew (super helpful, nice, friendly guy) gives you hints. Kaiser uses visual aid/experiments that I liked. Overall i liked this class, & Kaiser's method of teachin
This teacher is pretty good compared to all the others offered. His tests are really manageable if you do the practice exams. Make sure you do the practice exams over and over. If you attend class you will probably do well. Grading system kinda flawed depending if you do well or not. The TA Andrew Turner helped a lot. Trivia Q's don't make sense.
First of all the practice tests do help so much on your midterms and final. The TA Andrew was amazing and helped prepare everyone for the test. I believe people do poorly only because they don't take the time to use the book and practice tests. Even though Andrew does an amazing job it is still important to listen to the professor in lectures.
The TA Andrew is super helpful. He gives you big "hints" on ALL the tests. There is no homework. You should read the textbook because it really helps a lot-& easy to read. You should also note down the experiments Kaiser does in class bc those are on some of the tests. Other than that, the tests are pretty easy. It truly depend on how much u put in
The lectures were generally fairly boring and at times the content was covered too quickly. It was really helpful though that the TA Andrew basically walked everyone through most of the exams. It was still nearly impossible to get an A in the class with the curves requiring students to get less than 3 or 4 wrong out of 30.
Good teacher, yet goes a little fast sometimes. Practice exams are SUPER HELPFUL. In class experiments were way cool, whoa. TA Andrew Turner is the best TA EVERR! Thanks Andrew for all the test help!
If you want to receive an A in this course you will need to study. The trivia questions on his test make it harder, especially when he asks about planets. I suggest attending Andrew's (the TA) study session. He really helps a ton! Also do the practice exams multiple times!
Do the practice tests because they're similar to the actual tests. Attend the(Andrew's) review sessions because they help you understand the material.
Not too shabby. Super easy midterm; study the on line sample questions. Coll experiments. Kaiser blows up some stuff!
Pretty cool guy with a cool accent. Has an awesome TA who is very helpful. He knows his stuff and makes things very clear. Go to the study sessions
Sometimes overexplains the material, but a cool and funny guy with awesome experiments to make the lectures more interesting. His TA Andrew Turner is the bomb!!! Super helpful and nice. Do the practice exams and take note of the experiments and stuff Kaiser mentions about the planets and you should be fine.
Decent teacher, practice exams are very useful. The teacher goes on tangents about trivia, and they will be on the tests. Andrew is a very helpful TA.
He's a very funny guy and his practice exams are very similar to the test. His TA Andrew is an amazing resource and Kaiser does pretty cool experiments in class. The class does get boring and the full powerpoints are online. Only thing is that he loves chemistry about space so there are a few irrelevant questions about that on the exam.
Kaiser is funny and he has an accent. His experiments are cool (you go to class because the experiments are on the tests). The practice tests are very helpful, but just be mindful that you should be aware of exceptions and random astronomy stuff on the tests. His class is curved, and you should read the book for stuff he didn't cover.
You will get out of this class what you put into it.
His class was very hard because half the time I do not know what he is saying and he takes up the whole class explaining things when you can really teach it in 15 minutes. His experiments are very cool and helpful but get boring near the end.
This class is boring, and it is NOT EASY at all. The professor doesn't help much. All you have to do is to study the practice exams and the powerpoint slides at home. Study the experiments also. Totally not easy to get a B or an A. Take another professor if you can.
He has a thick accent but overall he does a pretty good job at explaining the abstract topics. You do have to spend a lot of time studying on your own just to pass. His TA andrew is the bomb though! Make sure you go to all his study sessions .
If you have been through high school chemistry, this should not be a class to worry about. Dr. Kaiser explains very well, his German accent is understandable, and his powerpoints are online. In-class demos will be on the exams. 4 exams + final. 20% each. No HW. Very large class. Use his practice tests to study. The TA makes all exams.
Kaiser makes going to class enjoyable, as he clearly knows what he is doing and can make his lectures funny. He teaches us what is in the textbook, but don't skip because he has questions about the in-class experiments on the tests. Tests are easy if you do practice exams posted online. No homework. You can buy previous edition textbook online.
I had an easy time with the class mainly because I took AP Chem in high school, but if I didn't it would be difficult because he talks quickly and has a german accent (that's understandable). Sometimes he covers things that aren't on the test that we don't care about. He's really funny, but lectures get long and boring. Not too bad of a class.
No homework so your grade is based on 4 midterms and 1 final. Powerpoints are online. He does a lot of cool experiments. You should attend lectures because demonstration questions are on the tests. Just pay attention in class, do all the practice exams, ask Andrew (TA) for help and you'll pass. P.S. You should teach lab again, Andrew :)
Professor Kaiser's class is really easy. No homework, just study the practice tests. He does have a German accent, but as long as you know what "Fe" is, you'll be fine. The experiments keep the class interesting. If you ever need help, you can just ask Andrew and he'll help you. Also, if Andrew has a lab, take it.
This class was just average. Kaiser can be nice and even funny sometimes; the class is fair. The practice exams were nice (and a must-do) and experiments were cool. Getting a good grade could be hard, but Andrew Turner will be your life saver! BEST T.A. EVER. He actually cares for the students, and wants you to succeed. (He likes nachos and candy)
Took chemistry sophomore year of high school so I didn't remember a lot of stuff. It was really confusing because he tends to go quickly and sometimes overcomplicates topics. The curve is a life saver. Do the practice exams and make sure to use the Learning Emporium and go to the review session. Effort will pay off for a decent grade.
Great professor. As a previous comment says-- you will get what you put in to this class. It's too bad he cant do experiments in class anymore. They were so cool!
He had a heavy accent and was hard to understand. His lectures were lengthy but some had demonstrations which were fun. His TA made all the test which were pretty difficult.
First things first, Don't skip class! When he usually talks about space or such there's a high chance that will be on the midterm. In some lectures there's also experiments that will be on the test. He adds some jokes here and there but with the light dimmed down you could get sleepy. To get an A in this class just do the practice tests he has.
There's no assignments, so your grades depend on how well you do on your tests. Memorize the random astrochemistry facts on his slides for a free two points on a midterm/final. That can boost your score up by a letter grade. If you ask him for help, he'll gladly assist you. Solid choice if you actually read the textbook.
A funny German man who knows his stuff. Lectures can be boring, though they are thorough and very helpful. This class is based on 5 exams which includes the final. Each exam has a corresponding set of practice problems which, if you do them and understand them, should land you at least a B.
FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO DON'T HAVE A SOLID FOUNDATION of chem, be prepared to work EXTREMELY hard for this class. There are no assignments or homework in this class so your grades are solely based on 4 exams and 1 final exam. He has a tendency to add random questions that he talked about during lecture (astronomy & class experiemnts) so don't skip!
As someone who didn't have a good chem class in HS, this class was pretty hard. Extra help & studying was mandatory. The strong accent makes things harder to follow. He posts practice tests/lectures online, but somewhat useless if you didn't go to class/read textbook. Try not to sleep & enjoy his jokes in class. STUDY HARD, USE HIS PRACTICE TESTS.
I had to teach myself all the information, I went to tutoring EVERY day, and met with study groups. Want to meet with him? Impossible. He does not care for his students. Worst experience ever.
I strongly agree that he doesn't care about his students at all. For a class that only counts 5 exam scores for the final grade, there were way too many questions that were irrelevant/nothing to do with the practice exam.
Kaiser's practice exams are helpful, but beware of questions that are answered by paying attention during lectures. His final exam consisted of 50 questions (instead of his usual 30 for midterms) which are cumulative, as about 1/3 of the questions are from the last 2 chapters from the semester, and 2/3 are from the midterms in the past.
It took time to understand him in his Russian accent. He could be funny SOMETIMES. Did alot of examples. If you took AP Chem in highschool, you should be able to grasp the concepts since it's like a review class. Had to depend on a friend who did take AP and practice exams. Should've started w/ 131 instead.
hard to understand him
Has a German accent. Sometimes I feel like he's speaking it in class but it's actually English. His lectures can be found online and has 5 midterm exams. Four have two chapters and last are the whole chapters he covered in class. No homework so no pressure except the exams. He curves. Not very accessible outside class. Always busy. Scary his way.
Be prepared to teach yourself all of the material before the exams! Although I attended all of the lectures and took notes, his lectures were sporadic and hard to understand. But he is very sarcastic and always made me laugh when he would destroy students for not knowing the answers. Overall, its obvious why so many people fail his class. Good luck
Pretty good teacher. He cares about his students if you go to his office hours. Be prepared to study extremely hard and do not miss his classes. German accent is not that bad, but you have to get used to it. Astronomy questions are unnecessary though.
Kaiser does not like slackers. Overall grade is based on five exams, so you should study the tests posted on his web page. Tests are very similar to actual exams. Too bad he canceled the demonstrations in the middle of the class - extracting water from sugar was so cool.
Doesn't care about students at all, even if you had someone in your family die he would not excuse you from a quiz. Class isn't extremely hard to pass (unless you're a bad test taker), but he puts random questions on midterms that weren't on practice tests.
To me, his lectures weren't very helpful. Here's how I passed. Whenever he says something random about space and whenever there are class experiments, TAKE NOTES. There will be questions about them on his tests. Also, do the practice tests and make sure you completely understand them (get help from learning emporium if needed).
If you take this class make sure you are prepared to read outside of class. Only grade you have in this class is 4 midterms and a final. Also make sure you have a general knowledge before taking the class . If he mentioned something about space or does a experiment, take notes because its a good chance it will be on the test.
This prof cares about the students if you go to his office hours and ask tough questions you do not understand. The grade is based on 4 midterms and one final, but homework does not count, and he does not give extra credit. He asks sometimes irrelevant astronomy questions - so take notes on comments on planets and space. Love his black humor.
Do not miss Kaiser's practice exams. He posted them on a special web site. Very confusing that he does not use Laulima - but solid teacher. His German accent is ok, but he should present more examples in class.
Don't skip class! He often talks about chemistry in space - do not ignore bec' this will be on the midterms. His demos are super cool so do not miss them either. Study the practice tests he posted, come to class, and you will be fine. There are lots of slackers in this class, so they will bring down the curve.
PowerPoints are bad and the tests hardly relate to them. Tests are also very hard having to memorize things that are not important/ should be given to us anyways.
General chemistry at this school is terrible. They make it really hard for no reason. Even people who took the previous chemistry class from this university barely passed. Professor Kaiser is not approachable at all, and is in fact really rude and unfriendly. He was a terrible teacher and a very unfriendly person in general.
Gen Chem with Ralph is the worst life decision you can make. It's like jumping blindfolded in a cage with a bear and expecting to win. I had to have therapy and I have a mental breakdown every-time I hear the word "electron". But seriously, don't take it with him if you want an A. His accent is heavy, his tests have questions about space, and S.
If youre not the next Einstein or dont want to DEVOTE your whole life to chemistry, dont take Kaiser. Hardest class I have ever taken. Please consider Kayla Gary instead! Ive taken both, prof Gary does a lot better job!
This professor is a tough teacher - he goes through the material very fast, so be prepared to revise at home and put in lots of extra hours. His accent is not that terrible, but he should include more example sin class. The connection to space and astronomy was really cool.
Worst life decision ever, I worked my ass off for this class because everyone said he was difficult. I dreaded going to lecture because I had a hard time listening to his accent, but youll eventually get use to it. The worst part is he always goes on astrochemistry, which btw is really unnecessary for a gen chem class. Grades are based off 5 exams
I rated this a 1 because it's the lowest number you can give. Made my first year a living hell. Don't do it. Just don't. think you can pass his class? you're wrong. Your grade is based solely on exams which were hard as hell and were not like the lecture slides at all. this class is a lie and makes any sense of hope and happiness lies.
No pain- no gain. Kaiser makes you work hard for this class. You had AP chemistry? It will help, but you have to study your ass of to get a decent grade. Take notes when he is doing some demonstrations , they might be on the test. He's accessible if you find his office in Fort Knox.
This class is based on only 5 exams. Each midterm and the final have practice problems posted. if you study and understand those, you should receive a B at least. To get an A, you have to go to each class: he asks questions about the demonstration experiments and space - free bonus points if you go. Overall decent teacher.
The homework is not graded, but solve the assignments anyway - similar questions might be on the exams. So your grade depends entirely on how well you do on your five tests. Memorize the random astrochemistry questions and class demos for a free one or two points on a midterm/final. Prepare reading the textbook.
Great teacher but you have to meet him half way in order to succeed. He sort of a tough love kinda guy but I liked it. Very sarcastic with a german sense of humor, but hilarious to say the least. Class based off of 5 exams. Just read book for conceptual understanding. Memorize astrochemistry and experiments. Do practice exams for analytics.
Excellent teacher - he just completed three review sessions. Class is not that difficult. He has clear grading criteria and does not curve. If you are a slacker, chose another instructor - you will not pass. Although attendance is not mandatory, come anyway for the demonstrations and the space chemistry questions. They will be on the tests.
Kaiser gives it to you straight, without all the fluff. Study hard!! Do practice exams, understand topics conceptually, and take notes on experiments and astrochemistry questions in class. Funny and really intelligent. If you are willing to put the work in then I highly recommend his class. Other than that, it isn't a walk in the park.
At the beginning of the semester, he CLEARLY states that 30-40% of the class will fail (also clearly states that many should take the Withdrawl if you're not ready). VERY HARSH on grading, 5 exams ONLY. 4 MidT, 1 Final. Speaks German to get kids quiet. Note: Do practice exams and get LOTS of help from friends. Grading scale is letters Astrochem
Skip class and you will not pass. You have to read at home and revise each lecture and also the experiments he does. Lecture can be boring sometimes if no experiments, but classes are very informative with lots of stuff. Go to his review sessions if you want to survive this class.
I suggest buying the book a semester before you take the class and read through chapters 1-10. Take notes on experiments in class and astrochemistry facts. Review after every class and do the practice tests multiple times until it's almost 2nd nature. A little fast paced but Kaiser is well versed in the material. Work hard and good luck.
If you aren't willing to put in the work for this class, I suggest taking the other professors for gen chem. Test grades are a little slanted but kaiser doesnt believe in grade inflation so there is no curve or extra credit in his class, you get what you get. 4 midterms and 1 final, all weighted the same. Study!!Study!!Study!! Good luck.
Probably the more harsher chem professors but is really knowledgeable in his field. no homework only grade you get comes from the 4 midterms he has and the cumulative final at the end. If you think this ones gonna be easy and you try to skip class or don't go to the TA for help then choose another professor. definitely need to put in time for this.
Prof Kaiser is a fair professor. He gives practice exams that are a lot like the actual midterm, so put in time to do them. He is not overly hard like some people make him seem. If you put in the work, the class is passable. A 26/30 was a A- on his midterm grading scale. His accent is not too hard to understand either.
Had Ralf for chem 161. Grade was calculated by four midterms and a final. Other than that, no homework. I recommend going to lecture, he likes to include questions about his in-class experiments on exams. If you put in the work you can secure a decent grade. Practice exams are helpful.
Nice guy, terrible teacher, Knows his everything chemistry, but not good at teaching students that knowledge, Classes are graded only with exams and finals, if you know everything about chemistry already and are a genius and don't need to be taught anything, he's perfect, If you need anything explained or to learn anything would not recommend
