He is by far the best teacher that we have encountered in the department. He cares about students, and spends a lot of time in office hours, etc. Tough exams thoug...
He's just too nice. :)
This guy is good indeed. It's refreshing to have a project instead of a final exam and his midterms are very fair. He's willing to help students and puts a lot (maybe too much) effort to impress his students in class. Overall a very good prof.
He is a great professor. Learned a lot from him and hoping to take further courses with him in the future.
love this prof! he's probably one of the nicest teacher i've ever had.
Superb Prof. A truly giften teacher. Little hard on the tests though, but high homework and project marks compensate.
best professor in my undergraduate years. Care about studetns.
A very kind prof with exceptional teaching ability. Always available for extra help, open to suggestions from students. Was a pleasure to have taken a class with him.
Drop the accent buddy... we all know you're from alabama.
He's ok.
He is super helpful and he really wants the students to understand the concepts.
He is so hot! The only reason why I go to class. He could dress a bit better. So smart!
Very helpful. Midterm and final had high averages though they weren't overly easy. Great at teaching...very enthusiastic...
I gave low marks because he's TOO helpful, often overanswering rather trivial questions and using unnecessarily (sp?) heavy (detailed) notation. OTH he works super hard and cares for his students and want's them to understand everything. APP MATH GU
Ralf is very nice, helpful and approachable. If you have any difficulties, just go see him. I would not have passed this course without his extra help. He gives out bonus marks on every homework and exam. His final is quite challenging, but it is doable if you pay attention in class.
An absolutely superb professor. He teaches so clearly and is sooo helpful. You ask him one question, he give so much useful info. He makes the subject so interesting. You really miss the lectures if you don't go to it!!
best math prof i've had. well prepared, very useful and clear notes, readily helps students outside of class. come away actually understanding the material, and knowing it well.
He is the BEST! I never ever seen any professor like him so far. He is so nice, so helpful, and explain so clear. You MUST take his class if you have chance. His exam is not so easy, but he will give you lots of chance to improve your grade. You will not be able to see any other Math prof like him through your life-time.
the nicest guy in the world
His marking is awful! His exams are long and too much writting. I don't know what is this guy looking to prove?
He is extremly unorganized and mostly late for his own lectures! exams are too hard and he has a stupid way of marking them!
Good prof, organized lecture notes (although they were from a different textbook he used before); neatest writing I have ever seen from a prof. Posts his notes online so lectures are superfluous, especially since he was always behind schedule so we had to read the textbook ourselves to do the HM anyways. Reviews really helped explain the material
His exams are too long. Always late for the class. Always behind the schedule. We actually had to read the text to do the assignments so i really don't know what was the point of going to his lectures. Left us for 5 lectures to go to some stupid seminar in the US. Couple of times assignments were not available until 24 hrs to the due date.
Even though he is a very nice guy, but his accent is hard enough to understand, and he mumble, and talk so quick, which makes it impossible to understand what he is saying. Always fall behind......
Explains most things in terms of physics which sucks for people who have never done any physics. At least he usually gives enough examples. I didn't enjoy this class at all.
He explained materials so clealy that they become tedious. Always behind schedule. But notes and explanation are crystal clear.Exams are reasonable.A+ for me.
I have already taken this course in UBC, but I am retaking it again to refresh my memory on vector calculus because of my physics program. Compared to UBC, Ralf is going overboard with this course and making it harder than it really needs to be. It was a mistake to retake it because I will probably get a lower grade.
11 pages of homework questions for one week is the most I have ever had for any given course. Homework questions cover a broad range of material (out of textbook too).. hard to study for the exam.. Regret taking this course with RW =(
Just finished the course with RW and thought I'd share my experience. Ralf is a nice instructor who is enthusiastic and caring. The TA (Chiaka) was also very funny and nice; the two make a great team. Unfortunately, Ralf made the final exam brutally hard and excruciating long. Instead of a test of knowledge, it was a marathon of infinite questions.
Ralf is one of the greatest prof I 've met at SFU math. I took both Math 251 & 252 with him, and both courses brought great experience to me. The fact that he put a lot of efforts into the course impressed me greatly. Though the homeworks were long, but it's really fun doing it. The final wasn't hard at all and I learned a lot of physics, LOL
not a good teacher at all extremely boring, exams are hardddddddddd, i ran out of time for both the midterms with 3 questions blank be careful
I love Ralf!He is a great prof and he is graduated from Princeton U!His notes are so systematically and with a great help even you don't need the textbook.Midterms are okay but the fianl is REALLY hard! But this is a pretty easy course. I hope I can meet Ralf someday again! I really like this prof.
well he gives so much homework that you pretty much are not even left with time to finish anyother course's work. his midterms are easy but SUPER LONG and final is HARD and EXTREMELY LONG you can never finish it ever no matter what
Such a HARD final, I couldnt believe when i saw the questions, and i will never ever take a class with him ever, too much work he demands that will help you none at the final...
He's an okay prof. He is very repetitive in lectures and goes over one too many example. I stopped taking notes about a month in. The assignments were long and some of the questions were really weird. But his exams are fair but you will be pressed for time on midterms.
Great prof!! Long exams but fair. If you learn everything and understand the concepts you will do well. His hw is long, but if you do the assignments and don't copy, you'll barely need to study for the final. Great prof, recommend him for any math course.
Very good prof. He was very good at teaching complicated topics. Lectures were quite useful. Lots of homework (10 hours per week usually), but this is good for practice. Midterm was very long, but final was good length and both were a fair difficulty level. Course material is quite useful, but it repeats quite a bit from MATH 251.
awww he has improved his teaching skill :) and I would say now he is the best math prof at sfu as I think:)he did a great job with math 254, which is engineering math course and he made it as easy as a piece of cake, although before taking the course i heard it's very hard course..but Ralf rocks and made it very reasonable.Great prof :)
best prof!!!!!!!!
The questions he asks on the quizzes and exams are right out of the textbook or the homework. But you are very limited for time when writing the exams, his first midterm he expects the average to be 50%. It is low because very few people can finish it in the allotted time. But he is very thorough in his instructing.
I took both 310 and 251 with Ralf this semester and quite enjoyed his lectures. He has very organized notes and well-rounded explanations. He gave a lot of exercises to help you understand materials. He was also very reachable. The only downside was he posted homework/sample exams so late. I was quite annoyed. But other than that, I recommend him!
This man is fantastic, he's a wonderful teacher. My grades jumped from about 50% in MATH 151, 152 to about 75% in MATH 251. In retrospect, it wasn't even "easier" material either. Ralf is probably the best math prof I've had. The man is rich in intelligence.
He is the greatest prof in math department!!!! know his stuff, and reeaaaally care about students. you just learn a lot from him!definitely recommended!
Great prof. Got asked lots of questions during class and was NEVER stumped or confused, always helpful. Very good at one-on-one explanations during office hours, and has extremely clear and useful fill-in-the-blanks style notes so you can pay attention more. He writes VERY long exams, however, so be prepared to work REALLY FAST.
Good prof.Midterms and finals are long, and there is hardly any space to write your answer in. Also the TA's and him didn't keep their office hours too well
Ralf is awesome! He gives long assignments with lots of questions but he doesn't check homework ( but the quizzes and tests are basically out of the homework so). His exams are fair but for the midterms they're really hard to write in the allotted time. He expects averages to be around 50% but he scales. TLDR: Take a course with him!!!
Very clear when explaining materials in the course.
Beside James, this is the second best prof I had ever at SFU. His math notes are the best.
low class average on midterm and final (both below 50%), no assignment solutions
Lectures are clear and well-organised. However, his midterms and particularly his final are difficult, lengthy, and will most likely make you sweat your pants off. It is easy to fail his exams even when you least expected to. Not a GPA booster by far but recommended for those looking for a challenge in the most difficult first-year math course.
If you are thinking of taking this course as a first year, really prepare yourself. You will have to really work hard for a mark you want.
Ralf is an okay professor. He's not bad, he just isn't good either. He was really behind for MATH152, and as a result we had to rush the ending. Ralf is also really bad with posting up new assignments, and he's sometimes disorganized. If you do take MATH152 with him, you just have to try a bit harder.
He is overall a good prof. I just know from how he was in class that he is best when he is teaching under 50 students. He is very knowledgable and excited about math. He is a good lecturer, but is always late. He spends too much time on easy stuff in the beginning and too little time on hard stuff, because he is so slow at teaching.
Frankly speaking, he teaches math152 like we have already learnt everything before. Seldom explains things, so sometimes you have to study most of the stuff yourself. On the other hand, he is really helpful if you ask him after class. Exams are a bit tough, especially the final. Good guy though.
He spent too much time on the easy stuff so we had less time to cover the harder chapters. He is kind, so if you ask any questions he will answer it nicely. Midterm avgs were 60% and 47.5% and final was pretty brutal as it was long and he included the stuffs that he barely taught us. He put 3 questions last quizzes which took some effort to finish.
Ralf is kind, helpful and definitely wishes success on his students. He has potential to be a GREAT prof however this semester his time management felt somewhat lacking. More time should have been spent on the challenging parts of the final (which may as well been the entire thing).
Stupidly hard midterm and exams. Typical academic, banters on about useless stuff. I am very skilled at math but his pointless stuff dragged my mark down. He seems to be a nice guy, but that isn't much of a qualification, is it?
Took 2 classes with Ralf. He's super kind and a very good teacher. If you're an advanced student, you might find that he progresses slowly and perhaps repeats himself too much, but don't worry; you won't find his assessments too easy! Exams are long, but everything works out if you've been putting in the effort. Overall, excellent.
Assigns hw on Sunday afternoons and expects you to hand it in on Wednesday. Took him a couple of assignments before he finally changed the weekly deadline to Fridays. His lectures are so-so, don't expect much from him. You won't learn anything. Hws are difficult; however, some questions on exam were based on hw questions. So study the hw.
Unnecessarily long homework and exams. Some assignment solutions were posted the day before the final. He was always late to lecture, 15 minutes late for the final, and an hour late for our review session. Taking a class with him is a waste of money and time. Take it if you like proofs, want to teach yourself, and have a lot of spare time.
A native speaker of English. He speak 'English' fluently. I like it.
I come away with a solid A for MATH152. Ralf is a very passionate instructor, who would chat with you like your old friend after class if you reach out to him. He also insists the idea that practice counts, and offers free review sessions aside from regular instructional hours. I love him!
He's a nice guy and will be more than willing to help if you ask him. That being said, he rushed through a lot of material near the end (five sections in one lecture?) which ended up being a large chunk of the final exam material. Also, check out the textbook study guide (available at the library) for lots of completed example problems. It saved me
Like others have stated, time management was very poor, especially towards the end of the course. He made empty promises about filling in the powerpoints, and uploading them, causing us to not write anything to fill in his blank notes. He's very nice however, but probably would recommend filling in notes even if he says he'll upload them bc he wont
He is very knowledgeable and he explains the concepts very well. I understand why he spent so much time at the start of the semester to cement the foundational ideas for the rest of the course. However near the end he was going too fast. so he just needs to work on his time management. He gives fair exams and he's a good lecturer.
Ralf is a sweet man, but he is not a good prof with online learning. He could not keep up with the lectures, leaving the class behind in many aspects. He does not reply to emails and is not organized. Although, if you attend his Q&A lectures he's very helpful. Might be better in person but I do not recommend taking an online class with him.
please avoid. i didnt know what was on our final till 3 days before which was so awkward. he also gave lectures on material that would be on our quiz the day of. his old notes were the only way i learnt,,, notes that were almost ten years old. the material itself isnt horrible, but the disorganization ruined it.
Easily one of the worst profs I've ever had. His lectures are alright but barely covers anything cause he's so slow! Even worse, he gives hard exams, lies about basically everything, doesn't respond to emails, all of which caused us to fall behind. In the long run you will have to teach yourself just to survive in his class. Avg for MT1 was 39%
Never take Math 314 with this professor. It seemed as if I took a Physics class rather than a Maths class. Exams are super lengthy (did not even reach the last question worth 20 marks) , assignments are super length (almost took 2 days to complete the assignment). Worst Maths prof ever.
Willing to help, knowledgeable, great lecturer, great notes. Horrible everything else. Extremely disorganized. Does not respond to e-mails. Condensed 80% of course work into the last 2 weeks of class due to procrastination. Midterm exam extremely long for 45 minutes. Few people finished. Same with quizzes. Computing assignments reasonably easy.
Ralf is extremely disorganized and seems to procrastinate a lot. 70% of the assessments were forced into the last 2 weeks. This is extremely unfair as it is the busiest time for students due to finals and other courses. Overall the content of the class is fairly simple, however, the MT exam was too long time wise and few people finished.
Ralf is a kind and understandable prof. However, for him to not post any assignments/quizzes for a month because of his own personal life, and forcing us to do ALL the delayed work in the VERY last 2 weeks of classes is completely unreasonable. Also, he doesn't respond to ANY emails/canvas discussions, and he never fulfill his promises in lecture.
If you wanna be lied to for over a month about "I'll post the assignment/quiz today", only for all the missed quizzes and assignments to be made within the last 2 weeks of the semester, Ralf is your guy. Other than the laziness, he's an okay lecturer and is a nice guy. However, the laziness far outweighs any of the positives. 100% avoid if you can.
I think Professor Wittenberg is a solid choice and he is a really good lecturer, the only problem for me was that I am not quick with it comes to quizzes and I ended up not having enough time during the quiz time to complete them, but at the end he was fair and extended the deadline to complete the computing assignments and quizzes.
Ralf was fine at explaining the material and giving good lectures. However, he stopped releasing assignments, quizzes, and practice questions after the midterm only to release them all at once in the last 2 weeks of class due right before the final. Seems like a good guy but was too unorganized.
For me, Ralf is one of the best math teachers in my life. His lectures were super clear, and he answered my questions very well. Ralf explained difficult theories clearly so that I could understand and didn't use any rote memory. He is disorganized, but I don't mind. If you really hate someone being disorganized, then avoid him.
Ralf is a solid choice for MACM316. This prof made 316 easier compared to other profs. Ignore all the people complaining that he released things late. It is true, but he gave us more than enough time to complete it and adjusted the grading criteria to give you options to not complete some quizzes/assignments. Very fair, lectures easy to understand
Ralf was disorganized and kind of abandon the course mid way through the semester as he failed to release computing assignemnts and quizzes, however he made it easier for us by omitting assignemnts and quizzes. His lectures were great and detailed. His tests were fair, especially the final exam as it was similar to previous final exams.
very enthusiastic lectures, this class is like a dream. Thank you Dr. Wittenberg
He does not give time warnings during exams, consistently goes over class time and gets upset at students for packing when class ends. If this was highschool it may be acceptable, but with the amount of tuition Im paying, I would except more organization and sharpness. Did I mention he doesn't give time warnings during exam? probably forgot lol
My main issue with this prof is that he posts quiz assignments very late (the day of, or before the quiz), and is slow at teaching. In some quizzes, the questions he puts in are not even from the quiz assignments. His teaching can be unclear as well so make sure to watch Jamie Mulholland's youtube lectures to fully understand the material.
I've never rated a professor before but felt the need to just because of how bad Ralf is. If you have the chance, STEER CLEAR. Ralf makes learning so unnecessarily difficult due to his poor time management and lack of communication and planning.
His uninspiring teaching style compounded with his disorganized lesson planning and tardiness makes MATH152 with him an unbearable course to take. If you like your homework due after the day you're taught the content and being in a confused daze for 50 minutes, this is the course for you. However, if you're a regular student trying to get by, RUN.
Ralf if you see this please take it as a sign to give up teaching.
good lectures, explanations are clear and to the point, confident with the topics, really puts an effort to make sure everyone passes, only problem is he sometimes shows up lates and definitely doesn't end lecture on time. overall very good and recommended
I feel that Ralf is actually a good professor, but his professionalism is lacking significantly. He constantly shows up late for lectures, spends too much time on a topic, and falls being only to catch up by covering 2-3 topics in one lecture, which makes it extremely difficult to learn. Just don't take an 8:30 class with him and you'll be fine :)
Some of these reviews are true, yet some quite far from it. Ralf's biggest problem is time management, however he's an otherwise solid prof. Personally I've found CALC 2 to be easier than CALC1 and all you really need to do is put in the work and practice. These reviews make the course seem worse than what it actually is.
ralf is a nice guy but always late to class, doesn't post resources quick enough, does not respond to emails punctually, and is behind in lecture schedule
He is not good at teaching and his exams are really hard. Avoid him if possible.
Ralf tries his best. His lectures are really boring, so you're better off just watching Jamie's videos. He is usually pretty disorganized and will often come to class late, so expect to fall behind in material often. The only way he catches up is by blowing through 3 different topics in 50 minutes and telling you the filled out notes are on Canvas.
That final exam alone is enough to give him a one
Ralf is very unorganized and consistently comes to class late. He rushes through the material as well because he is not good at managing his time. He'll go too slow at the beginning of the semester but then rush you so bad later. He says "uhhhh" for half of the lecture and it just seems like he's learning the content at the same time as we are.
His lectures are not very helpful, but he tries to teach well. He's just not great at communicating his thoughts a lot of the time so most of the time his lectures are just his stream of consciousness. His midterms are slightly challenging, but the final is what you should look out for. It'll kill you. It's sixteen pages of hell...
He is often late and disorganized, and he will not care if he is behind on material (often by weeks) as he will just cram stuff into lectures at the end without going into any reasonable depth. His midterms and quizzes are fair, but the final exam is not even something you can prepare for; 3 hours wondering whether youre sane or not (not kidding)
Ralf seems like a nice person but he was constantly late to class and fell behind not even a couple weeks into the semester. He then rushed through several topics at the end that ended up being important for the final. We sometimes learned things the day before the corresponding Webassign was due. If he managed his time better, he would be great.
skipped lots of lectures towards the end and still did good. Wouldn't say Ralf is a bad prof but can be rushed at times and that's understandable. If you know how to actually study effectively (and by yourself) this course is very enjoyable and is a breeze. Midterms are fair, final is hard-but curved so not the end of the world. Overall good class.
Barely passed the first mid and didn't do the second one due to sickness. Final was extremely hard and I almost got smoked on it. Luckily I still passed this course with a grade of C. Ralf's lectures were okay, but the tests are horrible. If you take this course with him, expect to have mind-blowing hard questions on final. Good luck.
Up until the final, it was a very average experience. We were behind the entire way through even with him skipping entire sections but it wasn't a big deal in the end. That final however was awful, I don't think a single thing I studied was on it.
Making this unbiased as possible- Was polite when asking him questions usually. He somtimes posted things late. He spent too much time on less important topics but was good review. Final was hard but he prob didn't make it alone. Whoever dislikes this is probably the same people who dislike any low rating for Ralf even though they're true.
Moderate accent, do not expect much, extremely slow lectures
Very behind schedule, very messy
Rushed lectures due to overexplanation of experiments instead of mathematical applications; skipped lots of curriculum topics as a direct result. Didn't excuse midterm during TA strike despite the Surrey class doing so. Notes are quite messy & hard to understand if you miss a lecture. Ralf seems like a nice guy, he just needs to get it together.
He is always late and never gets to the point of the class. Our class was so behind and he had to cram everything in time for the finals.
He is always late to class, very unorganized, always behind on lectures, forgets to post homework assignments on canvas on time, and gives very confusing lectures.
he talks so much, always late to lectures, and we were always behind schedule. this was horrible because doing the homework became incredibly hard since he hadn't taught it so you had to teach yourself at that point. his midterms are NOT at all do-able in the 50 minutes given.
He's deviated from the syllabus and created extra course materials to solidify concepts, plans to catch up from now until the end of the course. He will change due dates if it become unmanageable, and does go over things well in class. Only issue: he is often late to class and forgets to post his notes or hand in boxes for assignments after class.
He is always late for lectures and never finishes lecture material. We are always behind, and he makes unfinishable midterms.
Is always behind on lectures, & he usually doesn't adjust assignments accordingly. He's always late, and doesn't respond to emails. You can see that he knows his stuff, but he does not know how to teach an introductory course. He teaches as if we also have 20 years of experience and treats this as 'review' when we haven't seen the material before.
if you have taken calculus in high school you can push through and get the grade you desire but this is a horrible introduction to calculus for first-timers.
He made it very hard for someone who had never been taught the subjects before
Ralf is a wonderful guy and good at explaining when you get him one-on-one, but he really struggles to be consise in lectures. In 154 we are always behind on the content and have had multiple assessments on material we did not cover until after the due dates. I think he would benifit from reducing the reviews at the beginning of 50 min lectures!
He is consistenly late to class and behind on the lectures. He stopped doing review classes to catch up on material the day before tests. His lectures are hard to follow as he tends to mumble and sometimes can't get his point across. He somewhat got it together for the last two weeks, which makes me wish he had done it sonner.
He's always late. We're always behind on material, usually by 2-3 lectures. For some reason, we have programming/coding assignments that he doesn't teach. He teaches the class as if we've already taken uni calc courses before, and expects us to perform like we've taken one too. Midterms are heavily assignment-based and extremely long.
Ralf is usually late to class (unfortunately typical for math professors), but otherwise his only real downside is his lack of control over the 400 person class. He is accessible, very nice, and accommodating to students. He falls behind with material but adjusts what is on the exams accordingly. The exams are predictable and quite fair.
He takes long detours during his lessons, often taking up to a fifth of the class before starting the lesson. He teaches incredibly slowly, often being multiple lessons behind. Unless you took Calculus in High School, this class may be hard for you, not because the content is difficult, but because the professor does not teach the content on time.
Prof forces you to buy the textbook and an application for homework, then barely uses the textbook or the application. Instead he gives a copious amount of homework on an online website (the code for which was in the textbook, and that's all you need it for) every week in addition to written assignments. His lectures are slow and uninformative too.
He jumps between concepts constantly and never explains the steps to get some where.
Bad teaching style, almost always late, takes forever to setup,
Rambles constantly. Midterms were difficult, and there were even questions about the homework that hadn't even been covered yet. Constantly behind schedule, and he would teach material the day before the midterm. THere is homework due the week before and of the final. .
He spent a lot of time in the beginning of the semester on review of highschool topics and went into depth with it. But when it we started the calculus portion he would jump from topic to topic and not really go into the depth he had for grade 12 material. He kind of assumes everyone already knows how to do it. AVOID HIM!!!
Very sporadic jumping form topic to topic without explaining much. Always 5-10 minutes late to class and then spends another 10 minutes talking about random stuff that doesn't matter. If you took calculus in high school you may be ok but if you didn't good luck because he cant teach at all. Avoid him if you can.
hes always behind, cant understand his lectures well due to his lack of organization
Midterms were hard. Always behind schedule. He teaches vert slow and jumps between concepts and doesn't really explain properly. You can understand what he's saying, but once he starts mumbling you will not be able to tell what he's saying at all. One online and written hw due every week. If you didn't take calc before, it's gonna be hard.
Not the best prof especially for first year students (even tho he seems like a good guy). He's slow and veryyy behind on things. The midterms and final exam were not the best as the profs behind so literally had no idea what to expect. Try to take this course with a different professor.
He is often late and a bit disorganized, but he tries his best and genuinely cares. His in class explanations can be confusing, but if you go to his office hours he is good at explaining. His exams are fair most of the exam questions come from the homework. All written homework answers are in the filled lecture slides if you look
Ralf is a chill prof. He resolved few grading problems in my favor. Didn't make his class hard
Test where random
The prof is incredibly disorganized, both in his ability to present information in lectures, and how he rarely follows the planned schedule. in his office hour/calc workshop, its difficult to understand him as he tends to babble on without going straight to the point. I struggled a lot and just self studied cuz I don't understand his lectures.
Poor ralfy was always late to every lecture, he never responds to emails and often assigns homework before teaching the materials. Most of the course with this guy you're gonna have to rely on yourself to prep for the exams
He's a nice enough guy, but he yaps to the point where a week into lecture he's already a lecture behind. And he shows no intent to catchup/go faster. Plus for material we've already covered last lecture, he'll spend another 15 mins in the next lecture going over it again. Ralf I didn't want to rate you like this but you have left me no choice.
Just avoid him at all times. Always late to class. Skip materials and put it in the midterms...
-I've had him twice, both times we were/are behind and he does nothing to try to catch up -Takes him days to upload lecture slides -Goes through the day before's lecture (the reason we are behind) but uses a different set of lecture slides, so you have to download a second set of lecture notes for every lecture. -Comes late everyday (No joke)
Ralf is a great prof, and super helpful when you go talk to him personally. Although he did show up late to class 95% of the time. If you don't go to lectures it is hard to succeed in this course since the filled in notes get posted days/weeks late. Our final exam is tomorrow, and the solution to the last homework still hasn't been posted.
AVOID HIM AT ALL COST, PLEASE DON'T WASTE MONEY ON HIM. HE WILL GIVE YOU HELL, THE GUY NEVER EMAILS ANYONE BACK NEITHER DOES HE REPLY. HE DIDN'T EMAIL US ON WHAT'S GOING TO BE ON THE FINAL, NOT ONLY THAT. HE IS SOOO UNRGANIZED, HE IS SO UNHELPFUL. LIKE I HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO SAY EXCEPT IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE PLEASE AVOID HIM PLEASE.
Alright, yes he comes to class late almost everytime and yes we were always behind on lecture. DO THE IQs cuz trust me they helpful asf. A lot of the IQ questions show up on the mid terms or final. BUY LORD PI's Mid term and FINAL PACKAGES, THEY ARE SO GOOD. (Lord pi, is like a tutor who has his own discord server, so join the math server and ask)
Always late and very disorganized. He clearly has no respect for his students and does not value our time. He was late posting notes and solutions including posting material the night before our final that was 50% of our grade. He was also consistently behind in lecture material and even skipped lectures that were on the midterm. Avoid!!!
Did not do much to help the students, unorganized and do not even try to email him he will not reply ( go to math workshop itll save your life). Lectures are hard to understand even when the concepts themselves are on the lighter slide just really boring and a ramble fest.
Ralf is an outstanding professor who is deeply passionate about mathematics and highly dedicated to his lectures. His exams are not difficult, often resembling in-class examples. They are also less challenging compared to the IQ or written assignments he assigns. Overall, Ralf is a wonderful professor who genuinely loves the subject he teaches!!
Can be a little disorganized at times and falls behind in lecture but honestly isn't bad as a lecturer. Make sure to watch prelecture vids prior to going to lec as he serves more as a review of concepts than actually learning it. Exam questions are often pulled from written assignments
Very disorganised, did not answer emails, did not even tell us what the final covered. The course itself is very easy (didnt go to lecture, just taught myself from yt or ben ashby) but he just made it harder for no reason. Tests are identical to lecture examples and written assignments
Barely showed up on time and fell behind in lectures frequently, but had good lecture slides and examples. Exams strongly reflective of content from lectures and written hw. Frequently teaches content the day that hw is due, so need to be on top of it. Compassionate, so will push the deadline forward if enough ppl complain a lot of the time.
He's a good dude for sure and since this was his first time teaching (as stated by himself), he fell short when it came to explanations. Just do the work and you'll understand what he was trying to say in lecture much like how every other math class is for me.
Professor Wittenberg has the potential to be an outstanding lecturer. He is consistently right on time (or late) but a bit unorganized. His grading was fair and nothing we were graded on was too difficult. Taking calc 12 in high school helped immensely and I'd give that a lot of credit as to how I did well in this class.
Good lectures with clear explanations at a reasonable pace. Supplemented us with previous year's notes which were also helpful. Homework was relatively long and difficult but always built off lecture content. Exams are fair if you're caught up and have done the practices. Overall, it's a relatively challenging but rewarding and well-executed course
He's terrible in grading. His assignments forces us to cramp everything in a one page report, and then lose marks because things are unclear in that one page. Worst graders of all time. He cares about time management and page management more than students actually learning the course in his class. We should be getting marks for knowing the material
Ralf is hit-or-miss as a lecturer, but using resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook helps fill in the gaps. Exams are reflective of in-class content, so staying on top of the work is key.
Seems to be energetic when delivering lectures. Lecture notes are a little hard to follow along. NEVER ANSWERS HIS EMAILS! If you take this class with him you're on your own.
Gives extra chance to recover from the first few mistakes by offering an optional assignment. His lectures are helpful if you pay attention. Some people only come on the weekly quiz day and complain about the course. He takes care of the class, and in-person visits are recommended. Email responses are slow.
Does not answer emails. When you go talk to him he rushes you as if he's not getting paid to be there. Not enough time on exams. Forget about partial marks. no grading criteria for assignments. lots of homework and quizzes from them weekly and not enough time for the quizzes. No one understands the concept. Don't take classes with him!!!
Took Math 154 as someone that is not a huge fan of math, can definitively say this class was a waste of time, unnecessarily difficult assignments, prof was often late to lectures and very disorganized. Students had to buy extra resources just to be able to do homework. Teaches way behind schedule and tests material that had not yet been taught.
I agree with everyone who says he is disorganized, but his exams, quizzes are very fair, he follows the same pattern as before, so make sure you solve last term's papers. If you know the formulas and the process for questions you will be good. There's a weekly quiz so you have to keep up with the class.
Was late to a lot of classes (8:30AM lecture) and constantly had tech issues, which led to him rushing over material and not making a lot of sense. Go to the calculus workshop if you want to do well
He's okay, his tests aren't extremely unreasonable but he was barely accessible outside of class, he responds to emails like after 7 days. His teaching style sucks, mumbles and stumbles over his words a lot, he's constantly dealing with tech issues and runs late to class. Would be immensely harder without prior calc 12 experience
This is the most boring human on the face of the Earth. He takes forever to teach the class, and thus we ended up at least 2 lectures behind on the material. Instead of cutting material from the final and giving us the scheduled "review" lectures, he taught new material to the very last class. Homework galore as well. Avoid him if possible.
Shows up late every lecture, lots of homework, cannot teach a single part of a lesson without going off on a side tangent on something completely unrelated. Which is just confusing and makes lectures almost obsolete because it's impossible to follow.
Our first midterm average was 65% he said it was too high and told us he'd make the other exams harder to drop the average.
Ralf had fair midterms, and his assignments gave lots of opportunities to boost your grade. I found him to be a good lecturer towards the start, but towards the end he became disorganized. Be prepared for him to post assignments last minute before the deadline. However, all in all he still was a solid professor!
He's behaving very well. All the midterms were easy, but the final was so hard that I won't ever take another course with this professor. There were tough questions, and we haven't even solved them. It was the worst final of my life.
Used another professors pre recorded lectures to teach this course. It became abundantly clear when he'd modify said other prof's material as it never made sense. Some assignments the variables were changed to be impossible. Exams were doubled in length compared to prior years. Not difficult but a race to actually finish the problems.
Definitely go to the lectures as much as you can. He made the content interesting and provided enough background to each topic without it being too unnecessary. The course material is difficult itself but if you do the assignments and review the sample exams he provides you should be good. Deserves a higher rating here lol
Honestly if you didnt take calc in highschool, you're pretty screwed. if you did you should have no problems with the course as his exams are not particularly difficult. There is just a lot of homework which can be overwhelming at times. But overall, the class is not hard
The material itself is relatively easy it's exactly like highschool calculus. However he is very disorganized and we would fall behind and he'd do nothing to catch us up. He would ramble and mumble during lectures and was terrible at explaining stuff I taught myself everything. Exams are fair though.
As someone who had never taken Calc in highschool this class was extremely difficult for me. Would post all assignments the day they are due. Did not answer a single one of my emails all year. Questions on the test were nothing like WA or IQ homework questions. Going to lectures were pointless. Very hard exam. Do not recommend.
not an amazing professor. he seems like a nice guy but very scattered and disorganized. we were behind almost immediately and it affected our midterms. the material itself isnt hard (coming from someone who used to hate math), but he doesnt teach well at all. professor leonard on youtube got me through this class. iclicker questions count as well:(
Good Professor rounds the grades
I can tell he cares for his students because he tries to explain each concept, but that lead us to constantly be behind in lectures. Exams were fair as long as you did the WA and IQ questions. I would say taking calc in high school definitely helped as most of the course was very similar.
