He shows genuine interest in what he teaches. One of the most helpful professors I have come across.
Best teacher you could ask fore. You will learn more than you ever thought possible with little effort.
Great teacher! You should take him even if you are only slightly interested in history.
Speaks really clearly. Awesome Professor. Very much helpfull. I would recommend him to anyone! Goes over what's going to be on the exam, and if you have a question, he wants you to ask it.
He does not ask for much. Read the chapters he assigns on time so you can keep up. He is very involved and you can really see that he loves teaching this subject. If you have questions, do not be afraid to ask. Very comfortable atmosphere with this instructor.
great professor!!
Very articulate - knows his stuff. Expects his students to be prepared for anything he says to be on the test. If you take note of what he goes over during class, and use the handouts, you'll do fine.
I really liked him, hes challenging but its not too difficult to get a passing grade. He only has two tests and they are both essays so you have to do well on both.
class was lecturing, discussions and videos...not any homework...two tests, a mid-term and a final...grading system is hard to understand as i am not sure why some of the people there got a's and other, more seemingly logical students received c's...write your essays exactly how the classroom discussions develop and you should do ok..and take notes
Probably one of the most boring teachers Ive ever had. Two exams and that's it..what happened to Gordon Rule? I'd stay away from this guy. Treats his class like it's high school. If you're late to class twice you fail.
The most BORING class I ever attended. This kind of "instructing" gives community colleges a bad name. I took a summer course - 13 class meetings and over 20 movies watched mostly from the History Channel and A&E. I could have save a lot of gas and time by staying home and watching TV.
Class grade based only on 2 essay exams. You have to read all the chapters in the book & the class lecture only went over the handouts he provided. The rest of the class time was spent watching videos from the history chnl, etc. Completely boring class. Memorize the major events & people from the book to put in the essays & its an easy A.
Decided we can study philosophy on our own time, in class we talked only about the benefits of Christianity. First day was talking about how good it is, and why people should be Christians. Seems to be that he needs to be told what subject he is teaching, and then teach it. Don't change the class to an Intro to Christianity, we have religion class
Lecture is terrible.Book was not helpful on the topics covered.Grade consists of 2 in class essays which you do not know the topic until you arrive that day for class. He is very arrogant. I do not recommend him for PHI 1600/Ethics.
it would have been nice to know the book was not used as much to avoid buying it. very expensive. extra credit given if you feel the 2 in-class exams (not open note) are not good as can be. he rounds up on your grade between the 2 exams though, which helped for this class.
This guy is straigh up in his teaching. You recieve two grades in the class for essays. So all you have to do is listen to the lectures and read the book.
If you want to take a religion class when you get a philosophy credit for it than this is the class to take. There is more to philosophy than only disputing whether god exists or not. do not take this class.

This class is easy. There were two books to buy which I didnt read and all I did was come to class and watch movies the majority of the time and I passed. If you put more than the minimum effort in you could easily get an A. He has such a boring voice though. Nice guy but boring.Answers questions and only 3 grades. essays day of the class. no hw
Aquila is the man. I took him for european history as well. He is an old school professor who will give you two essays to write. Pay attention and keep up on your reading assighments and you will be fine.
History and philosophy classes were both interesting. Provided you put in the time the grading is very fair. I like the fact that there are 3 exams in essay form with random questions. Complex issues were delt with in a very eloquent manner.
The philosophy class was boring but it was super easy as long as you paid attention.
class comsisted of weekly group discussions and 3 essay's
Horrible Teacher, all we did was watch movies that weren't related to the chapter. We never physically used the book(s) in class. He made us buy 2 books for nothing! We had to read/study the chapters on our own and half of the stuff he talked about in class was off the subject. Would have been nice if he actually went over the material in class.
You don't really need the textbook, as everything that might be on the test is verbally communicated in class. There are three exams that count for all of your grade pretty much. That part sucks. But he's a pretty cool guy, very logical and easy to speak with.
Very quiet voice. He talks like he's on the History channel. He just spews information for an hour and a half straight so it gets really boring pretty fast. The other half of the class is spent watching videos. Rarely used the textbook. 3 essay exams. FULL of information. Not the worst teacher, but if you can get a different one, try.
Have you ever seen the dry eyes commercial-that voice and so mono-toned..yet even quieter. Bored me to pieces, I found the material in the book more exciting. This is not basic philosophy, he focused on a specific topic and it was about others philosophies. I loved this subject until this class. Avoid it and him or try ethics instead.
There are three grades in whole term, all tests. Class consists of copying down notes from the board and then having a loosely structured classroom discussion for the rest of the time. Almost all the discussion is related to religion, I would have liked to see more topics covered. Overall would not recommend.
Very knowledgable instructor. This class is half textbook half class discussion. The claims that he sounds like Ben Stein are greatly exaggerated. Your grade for the class consists of exams in the from of an essay. If you want an A, you must study. Very interesting class. He expects you to act like a college student, that's it.
He is very smart and knows the material. You will learn a lot but your grade may not reflect this. Your grade consists of three 1 topic in class essays which makes your grade totally subjective. If you are attending classes for grades only you may what to avoid his classes. Other than that he is a good professor.
Good teacher just don't like the grading system but to each his own.
I would like to address a statement I made in a prior review which stated you should avoid his class if your only their for a grade. This is not a criticism of Mr. Aquila but a knock on college. Some students, including myself, take certain classes or prof to inflate or maintain a GPA, this is just not the class to do it. He is an excellent prof.
Expects you to act like a college student; addressed a few issues during class which made me students these days are too spoiled, and I agree with Aquila. Grade consisted of 4 essays, and he was very lenient when grading. Take his history class to see if you really are a diligent student who is responsible.
I find his class very interesting. You can tell he has a great passion for what he is teaching. Can be a bit tedious with the movies, but overall a very interesting class.
I HATE HIM! He is the most boring, monotone, talks but says nothing teacher I've ever had! His 3 essays are ridiculous and he thinks he's an english teacher. But he does know a lot, I'll give him that much
Boring! Monotone and acts like an English Professor. Only 3 essays in the semester and won't give you a specific area to study. Rotten way of teaching.
Boring, only 3 written exams, very vague, will however work with you in the end and help you pass the class with extra credit work.
This is my least favorite class out of 5. It's hard to stay awake in the class. Philosophy is a great subject- but he makes it the most boring subject in the world. However, he does try to work with you on your grade, but he won't guarantee an A to anyone.
i have a b currently after two exams...however the amount of studying i had to do for a level one or 1k class is ridiculous. For an intro class it wasn't at all intro . The class is not an easy a and involves abstract thinking. Overall it was an insightful class but if i had the option to choose a different prof i would most definitely do so.
STAY FAR AWAY! Worst class ever. Not clear for his exams. WILL MARK YOU OFF FOR GRAMMER, PUNCTUATION ECT. Says which class are prereq. There are none!! Too hard for 1k class! Your grade is based off of 3exams! THATS IT! NO class extra credit but did work with you on test grades. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS.Ended up with a C and studied my butt off!
I admit the Professor Aquila acts more like an English professor than a history professor. You only take 3 essays the whole class plus you don't know what the exact topic is to study for. If you read the chapters and take notes you'll pass. Overall I felt it was too much work for an intro level course.
You have been warned! My opinion of college has decreased now that I have taken his class.
great teacher opened my eyes to understand things you can't understand
This professor is a talker, he grades based on exams, and all the exams are essays written in class. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Veryy very hard class but, very very interesting. Don't take unless you are willing to do a lot of studying. I passed with a B.. No one in the class got an A. Hard grader, only 3 essay test. If your really smart, you should take this class.
Teaching style wasn't for me
Aquila is condescending & I'm not the type to get bored easily, but I had a hard time not falling asleep in his class. Ethics is a very interesting subject, but he makes it so boring. There are 3 essays for your grade & you never know what they'll be on until the day of. It will always be unclear on what he exactly wants out of your writing. Run!
I sat in the back and texted all class, came late to every class, didn't study for anything and still got an A in this class. Just talk to him after class and seem interested. He's a nice guy who just wants to scare people away from his class. He'll give you an A if you just consistently talk to him, or actually study.
If you aren't into philosophy, RUN. Very smart professor, but this is an EXTREMELY hard class for an intro class. Only 3, handwritten exams, I failed the first. When I asked for help he told me to re-read to book over & over until I understood it. I ended up getting my own tutor. He likes class participation & that's what saved me. Don't be late!
Professor Aquila is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He knows what he is teaching and is respectable, helpful, witty and gives good feedback. Just be prepared to pay attention, attend class on time, and take notes. If you're interested in philosophy and logic I highly recommend choosing Prof. Aquila.
*Review based on Ethics course. Sarcastic and rude. Monotone voice and doesn't engage students in lecture. You'd be better off listening to a recording. Throughout the whole course, there are ONLY 3 exams. No other assignments/extra credit. He also grades them very harshly. Wouldn't wish this professor on my worst enemy!
Not a good teacher. Knows what he's talking about, but has a very condescending tone when you ask for help he tells you to read the textbook several times until you understand it. The final grade consists of only 3 exams- handwritten essays in which he marks off for punctuation, grammar,& spelling. Difficult grader and no extra credit.
He's not a bad teacher and definitely a really nice guy. The lectures can be long and redundant butthe materials pretty cool. The biggest issue I had was with his grading system (which did turn out to be kind of flexible). Youre graded on three in class essays and they are graded very tough. He grades them as though youve had weeks to write them.
I took his ethics class. Your grade is based on 3 essay exams. It's imperative that you study and understand the material thoroughly or you'll definitely fail. Overall good class, he knows his stuff and is helpful if you're stuck on a concept. Can be slightly condescending at times. I took intro to philosophy before this and it helped a lot.
This class is probably the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. Be prepared to study and take very specific notes! Memorization is key here, word things exactly how he does! The entire grade is based off of 3 essay exams. He does provode great feedback and spends plenty of time going over the material; he really knows the subject matter.
Please i beg of you do not take this course under any circumstance. if this is the last class thats open, then wait till next semester. I am i straight A student and my standards are high when it comes to class but this is on a whole new level. I dont have many regrets but this class was hands down my biggest. i clawed and struggled for a D.
Professors Aquila's grading scale is rather odd since you could get an A or C, he wants to see you write very well written essays with correct amount of content and spelling. Pay attention in class especially to the videos and read the chapters he assigns and you'll do fine.
He needs to stop being a history teacher and become an english teacher because your grade is solely based on how well you write. Do NOT be late because he gets mad and marks you absent. Only three grades (3 essays) and he doesn't tell you what they are on. Now I know why only 9/35 people signed up for his class. If you want to pass do NOT have him.
Take detailed notes and memorize everything! He challenges you to use your brain and look at things in different ways. He does not like multiple choice tests and grades solely off of 3 essay exams. If you have problems with grammar, spelling or have never taken an English class I highly suggest you reconsider taking his course. Very hard grader!
My favorite professor at HCC. His ethics class was a great class. Very interactive. He allowed everyone to present their opinions and was respectful to everyone. He inspired me to take more philosophy classes. Highly recommend Ralph Aquila
Professor Aquila was interesting. Kinda odd but pretty cool. I enjoyed the class. Tardiness and being present is a big deal for him. I was very rarely bored although some things in the class were redundant. You're only graded on 3 essays which makes getting an A slightly difficult. I'm liked him enough to register for his philosophy class.
Worst lectures I have ever sat in. Guy never gives breaks and drones on for the entire class. He never responded to my emails. How is this guy a teacher? In his logic class you will learn about him being a bachelor, and having cats.
In all honesty he is a great professor to have. Any one who bickers about his written exams is not focused enough in their all around studies. If you stick with the class you will see that he takes into consideration of your progress through out the course. he offers a lot of content for you, so if you enjoy stimulating class discussions, enroll.
You are assigned chapters to read, I honestly just Googled reviews of them. Will read doc. in class, and will make fun of you if you cant pronounce names. All exams are handwritten, so if you're looking for multiple choice exams, find a diff guy. He seems nice but lectures are fairly boring. Read the chapters to keep the class rolling. GO TO CLASS!
Elementary Logic is an introductory course, and there is a lot of information to grasp. I had high expectations for what I would learn, and although I did learn a lot, I did not feel like I mastered the course. I think that Professor Aquila takes into consideration the effort that you put in, but does not give away A's. This class is challenging.
This professor ironically taught us the workings of Richard Dawkins, a scientist who said awful things about Philosophy. He was too focused on atheism and we missed ont on the classics like Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Decartes, Kant, Nietzsche, etc. I had to find out about all these names through a friend. No more scientism classes please.
Very dull. Would not suggest anyone taking him. 3 essay test in class. He grades them as if you were in English class instead of history. Heaven help you if you have poor hand writing. Had a full class at beginning but by the end only a few remained.
He doesn't give clear answers as to what you really need to study for his test
Really great professor, strict with grading but if you deserve an A you get one.
Amazing speaker
hes at least good at talking
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS as him being your proffesor. There are only 3 exams in the entire class in an essay formatted type. It is a very biased way of grading so if youre not a great writer within an hour time span than for sure do not take this class! The man doesnt know how to communicate to adults and treats the class like its middle school.
stay away. more than half the class dropped out. his lectures are way too long and he requires that you buy the textbook and barely uses it at all. impossible to know what grade you got until he hands your exams (essays) back.
Completed Ethics class - express course (6 weeks). Great lectures, lots of useful knowledge gained. Highly recommend taking this class. Prof. Aquila is a an awesome teacher and person. You will enjoy and apply new learnings in every aspect of your life: at work; with friends; personal life. The course has help me to find and tune my moral compass.
Literally the worst professor out of all teachers I have had at HCC. You are only graded on 3 essays for the whole semester and that is it. If the answers on your exam are not worded for word what he states during the lecture, he will mark the answer wrong. I have never had so much anxiety during a class before. Save yourself and don't take him.
This professor sucks at explaining the content to students at an understanding level so that you can understand the politics of history. Asking questions trying to get an understanding is like annoying to him that you even asked. He do a lot of talking but never truly giving the class true definitions of the subject.
Class was all lecture and 3 test grades. If that's your thing, he was a very engaging and intelligent lecturer.
If you want to make your life easier, do not take this class. The class overall is difficult to understand in my opinion and the teacher is neither helpful or willing to give actual advice. If you do not enjoy reading or writing I do not recommend. Also, grades very harsh and super picky about the littlest things.
Is extremely rude with feedback and how things are graded. Is very specific and if it isn't done his way, he will mark it incorrect. I would stay away from this guy...
The Professor himself is an acquired taste sometimes good or bad. This isn't an issue in itself but missing one day could ruin your grade for the unit. If you miss a class that class will have specific notes not able to be found elsewhere. He will also state to ask another student for the notes instead of helping you.
Professor Aquila was one of my most favorite professors to date. He is incredibly knowledgeable and will answer your questions every time. The grading is difficult cause its only on 4 exams. His exams are in essay form so you need good writing skills. I learned so much from his class. You will not pass if you dont take notes. I would take again.
Do not, I repeat, Do not take this mans class. He is so difficult to deal with. Only grades on three essay based exams. A very subjective grader. Take someone else for this class. I beg you. I would not want to see another student get a poor grade because of this man. He has had multiple complaints to the deans office on him for berating students.
Beware! This will be an awful experience if you decide to take this class. The way he teaches is not effective. I have no idea what these positive reviews are for. Just pick another professor.
The structure of this class is reading 1-2 chapters a week, often 100 pages or more, and discussing it in class. When comes to grading, you're graded on 5 assignments. 4 hand-written exams and one term paper. He grades on grammar and stuff, so be careful. Overall, easy-ish class, but some may have a difficult time.
Lots of assignments with sooo much reading material attached without clear instructions. 15 6-word-sentences, good luck. some assignments will have 2 or 3 15 SWS due for each.
