Prof. Chikhany seems like a great guy, but he treated our class like a "guinea pig" class: it's clear he figures things out as he goes long. He gave us a quiz that almost everyone failed so he had to offer a retake (so not everyone would get a 2/10). He only has one midterm and it counts for a lot which also sucks. He's pretty engaging, though.
The class is very engaging but Prof Chikhany made it so organized and easy to follow. His video lectures are very clear and funny and he is always taking feedback in consideration. He always answers questions on Campuswire too. I highly recommend him!
Dr. Chikany is a great and caring person but I definitely would not take his class again. The course is heavily application based and even though I took calculus already, I felt very underprepared. The class is very time consuming as well. Dr. Chikany is very considerate, though, and will help you throughout the course.
Incredibly difficult class. Professor is a nice guy, but I wouldn't take his class ever again. The homework assignments, due every week, were incredibly time consuming and so different as to not be related to the course videos themselves. Choose another professor or test out. Don't take his class unless you want to stain your textbook with tears.
I think Dr. Chikhany is a great professor and is always very quick to respond. His responses can be vague, but he usually points you in the right direction. The class is tough with one of the weekly homeworks taking a very long time to complete (usually several hours), but it is nice to have a weekly schedule that you can rely and plan on.
He is a great professor. Very guiding and would surely take one of his classes again. He is responsive, he makes you work for it, something that I appreciated as this is a math class--and not a history, politics or same kind of class that you only learn things by heart. He has a fixed schedule.
Professor Chikhany is a nice guy. However, the material is really hard, and his tests are difficult. He gives out tough homework assignments every week, and he's a fairly strict grader. Overall, he's a great person who cares about his students, but I hope he will be nicer to his future students.
Dr. Chikhany is a well-guiding professor and would take his classes again. He is very helpful with interesting homework that make you think beyond the lectures.
Prof. Chikhany is a great guy. Lectures and materials are clearly organized. Class contents are well explained. He responses to every question on campuswire. Dropping policies are very generous. Highly recommended.
His explanations are very clear - especially his asynchronous lectures - and he's always available to answer questions, he won't give you the answers but will point you in the right direction. He uses technology well and has adapted well to an online mode of teaching. The homework is time-taking but good practice. I would definitely recommend him.
Practice is essential to Math learners, and I think the weekly homework is important also. Keep up his pace and you will be fine.
Unreal teacher
Professor Chikhany is one of the best math teachers I've ever had. Work can be tough, but it is manageable if you pay attention in class and ask questions whenever you can. Very accessible outside of class, always answering questions on Campuswire, cares about every student and wants them to succeed. Highly recommended if you're willing to work!
The best professor in NYU. I love his class! It's so clear and well-organized. And he is kind and helpful. Homework is easy and sometimes challenging. I definitely recommend his class.
He is super diligent and nice. He is always funny and also very helpful in any time! Of course there are lots of homework but I ask the other class and they have the same amount of HW as us. HE IS A REAL GEM . Straightforward, do actually help the students instead of giving vague answer. And also a fair grader ! If u study, tests are doable.
Nice professor for MFE I. Clear lectures, engaging materials. Accessible and friendly. Word hard and you will be fine.
Professor Chikhany is a great person and professor. Although the workload may be challenging, he tries to help as best as he can. If you get the chance of taking him, take it!
Prof. Chikhany is admittedly scattershot: sometimes the class feels unprepared, and the recitations sometimes conflict the lectures. But hes super nice, caring, frequently funny during class, and is a natural lecturer. Getting an A requires some work, but if you do the homeworks and quizzes youll be fine.
Professor Chikhany gives great lectures, and he really cares about students!!! I got an A on midterm but not sure about the final. Just take his class. The lectures are so clear.
I worked very hard on quizzes and homework and got A for both sections, but the midterm and final are incomparably difficult to what he gave for quizzes and homework. It's especially unrealistic to do so much work in a limited time. He does give great lectures, but they won't save you from a failing final grade.
Amazing professor, guide me through MFE1. Accessible outside of class, reply to every message I sent him on CampusWire. Also he lets you drop 3 lowest quizzes, hw, very generous. Easy A.
He is super kind, relatable, easily accessible outside of class and made my first remote semester very easy. Lectures and course are insanely organized. I really can't think of anything negative... except if you don't want to work hard, then don't take his class. I think I learned a lot, not only math wise, but also about how to succeed in college.
Professor Chikhany is fantastic. He lectures very well and I genuinely learned a lot from his course, even with my astounding hatred for mathematics. His homeworks are long and much more difficult than his lectures or quizzes. Final and midterms are unfortunately the same, with no curves (significant ones, at least) to help. Slow workers, careful!
Harder than expected. Nice professor.
Prof. Chikhany is a great lecturer. He was very accessible outside of class, especially via Campuswire and office hours. My main struggle in this class were the quizzes and large exams (midterm, final). It took me a WHILE getting used to finishing quizzes on time. My advice: BE CAREFUL OF TIME, be a fast test taker in general to pass this class.
Professor Chikhany is a good lecturer and can explain ideas very clearly. He is very accessible outside class and willing to answer any questions you have. There are quizzes every week. Those quizzes are not hard but the time limits are very short. Exams are easy if you understand all the ideas in class.
You will work VERY hard in this class (I spent a minimum of 5 hrs/week on homework- and that's on an easy week!), but he is SO great at teaching! His lectures are in depth and make sense, the problems he goes over are very useful for hw and exams, office hours are helpful, and he is always open to questions (no matter how dumb you think it is ;)
The homework took forever and it seemed like I had never done calculus before (and I usually get high grades in math). Any NYU class giving a final gives 1 hr 50 min to complete it. He decides to shave off 10 min not even 24 hr before. He repeatedly said in class it'd be 1:50, so this caused lots of unnecessary stress. Avoid him at all costs!!
The course itself has a lot of work so cannot blame him for the homework and quizzes. He is very caring and is always available to clear doubts. He explains the concepts very well and if you ask him to explain it again he will do so. The midterm was not very difficult if you practice and come, the final was long but not very difficult.
Prof Chikhany was amazing. There is weekly homework and quizzes but they are very similar to class work. Recorded lectures are detailed and enough to study for the tests. Exams are similar to class. He is funny and tried to make class inclusive by using pronouns and dedicated time to talk about transgender week, no other prof did. A true gem!
They assign a significant amount of homework, but more importantly, the quizzes and tests are much more challenging than the homework and you're given little time to complete them. Don't take the class unless you're willing to commit lots of time to it.
Great professors at lectures. He gives an absurd amount of workload. His tests are significantly harder than the homework and gives you minimal time to complete them. If you can I would try to avoid this professor.
workload is heavy. two Psets & a quiz every week. grading is nitpicky and very specific. tests are extremely tough w/no curve & very different from lecture. very conceptual, if you dont think w/numbers, avoid. good teacher & very accessible, but material/grading is more difficult than it needs to be. feels like an 8 unit class, wouldnt take again
Standard math teach. Adheres closely to textbooks. Grading is way too specific, though: docked points if they don't like how your graph looks, if your paragraph-length explanations aren't long/'good' enough, etc. Very accessible.
Ralph Chikhany is a great professor. His ability to break-down complex concepts is second to none. But his tests & quizzes are extremely challenging. Even after putting hours to study, complete homework and work on quizzes, I wasn't able to do well on exams as there was never enough time.
He's a caring teacher. He appears to be passively aggressive sometimes but if you ever had office hours with him you know he's a friendly dude. The WebAssign and Gradescope assignments are totally manageable. It's a reasonable amount of workload.
The class has A LOT of work (3 assignments every week) and the work is graded very strictly BUT he drops your 3 lowest grades in each of the 3 assignment categories. Assessments are short on time which sucks and you have to rush BUT he is very nice, accessible, and clearly cares. Hardest I've ever worked but would take again. Don't take for easy A.
Class failed a quiz and had to give a makeup one. Hates when you email him. Accessible but arrogant. MFE1 is basically AB Calc but he makes all the concepts harder than they need to be. Takes time off of exams unnecessarily. Don't take him if you love math so much.
By far the best Professor Ive ever had. They are extremely caring yet strict, and everything is manageable when I do the work weekly. Ive met many times with them and they always explain things as good as in lecture, if not better. Weekly HW and quizzes but drops 3 lowest. Definitely take him as long as youre willing to put in work.
Grading's too strict. Put in so much work to get an A. In my Calc classes i took here before this one, they were much easier and covered the same material. Econ concepts aren't hard but the way he teaches is atrocious. You'll hate math by the end of his class. For ur own sake, don't take him unless a different prof is worse than him. Then good luck
Many reviews below are inaccurate. Yes the class is hard and there's a lot of work but that's just the class. He does not "hate emails" , he is very very accessible outside of class on Campuswire and replies almost directly. He met with me many times individually before the final. I have never had a professor who cares that much, take his class!
Class has a heavy workload, maybe 1-2 hours of vides to watch before class each week. Two different problem sets and a quiz at the end of every week. Three lowest of each problem set category and three lowest quizzes are dropped. Exams are reasonable if you're prepared (potential curve). TAs and Prof very accessible & helpful. Need to put in effort
No matter when you send him a direct message, he will immediately reply to you with an enlightening hint or a clear explanation for your confusion. The best math prof I've ever met at NYU. And his grading policy is generous with three lowest homework and quizzes dropped.
Honestly it is hard work but you can definitely get an A. I did have calc experience before so most of the material was already familiar to me, but Ralph and his TAs are so accessible outside of class I really think anyone can do well. The tests are as hard as the quizzes, practice problems and lectures so there are no surprises. Great guy.
Good at teaching and is VERY accessible outside of class. All Im going to say is to not take this prof if youre a slow worker, dont have a lot of time on your hands, or if youre unwilling to go to office hours to get clarification on some things. As a prof, he could be a tad bit more lenient with his studentsespecially during the pandemic.
Just no. There's better teachers. Don't take him for your own sake. If you take him, say hasta la vista to your math grade
One of the best professors Ive ever had, very open to any kind of questions, seemed to really care about his students. Would recommend!!
The professor is very nice and explains everything well. Really enjoyed how he explains how to think about proofs rather than reading over them. His availability outside of class and how patient he was with questions really helped me on problem sets.
I took linear algebra with Professor Chikhany in the summer session. The problem sets and quizzes are definitely not hard. He explains concepts well and is very patient with questions. Also super accessible outside class on campuswire.
Had him during covid and he wasnt bad. Taking him in-person this semester and his class is terrible. His flipped lecture style is a disaster, especially since HE isnt teaching the pre-recorded videos. Hes not that bad, but if youre not very good at math, dont take him.
His lecture videos were very organized and clear, and the homework and exams were of reasonable level.
MFE 1 was great, but heavy workload. MFE 2 is a bit different, he does not record the videos but he goes over everything in class thoroughly. The videos are helpful if we have to miss class or start early. No quizzes but there is a take-home exercise that we have a day to complete. Overall very strong and caring but do not take him for easy A.
He is the most responsible professor I have ever met! He replies all the messages on time. He answers all the questions students ask!
Dr. Chikhany made math accessible in a way that it never had been for me before. I feel I learned so much useful information in this class, and honestly it was one of my favorites.
I absolutely love everything about Ralph. His lectures are serious yet fun, homework is challenging but feasible and exams are exactly what youd expect. There is a lot to do in general but the everything is manageable by the way his deadlines are set. He is so caring and genuinely wants us to succeed.
He's a good professor, but really a hard grader. Do not pick him if you expect an easy A. You really have to do a lot for his class. One of the most burdensome classes I have ever had.
The worst professor I've had in my four years at NYU, I created this account just to give this review because I've never felt the need to warn students not to take a professor. He teaches like a high school class but grades like a masters and is generally mean towards students.
Loved Chikhany!!! He structures his classes super well, everythings super well organized, and he's a great lecturer!! But as my grade reflected, you need to stay on top of your work - and there's quite a bit of it. As a prof he's amazing and offers so many great materials a lots of support, kind of wish I took advantage of it while I still could
Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The class is very organized, and if you follow the professor, there will be an easy A.
Chikhany's lectures are crystal clear and he wants everyone to succeed. HW is long and sometimes hard but exams are pretty much the same as the HW.
MFE1 is definitely a lot of work, but as long as you keep up with the work, the exams/class won't be a problem. The class is super structured and Prof. Chikhany is super helpful, definitely go to office hours!
Good lectures and everything is clearly explained, it's just a lot of work with the assignments due every week. Pretty decent class overall.
Discrete was amazing with Dr. Chikhany. Lectures were very well organized, even when the material was hard or he made mistakes and fun of himself! He is very enthusiastic and caring. There is a lot of work to do outside of class but deadlines were well spaced out. Final exam was longer than usual but the same as lecture material.
Rude outside of classroom, hates office hours, demotivates you even when you try, very boring and dry lecture, one slide that should take 2 minutes often takes 20, gives way too much homework, examples in class are no where as difficult as ones on problem sets or exams. Exams are very difficult. Problem Sets can take an entire day of work to do.
I loved having Professor Chikhany! Clear lectures, encourages class participation/answers student questions, very accessible during office hours/Campuswire, fair grader. I found Discrete to be a tough class in general, but Professor Chikhany made the learning process easier. Problem sets can be difficult, but exams and proofs are doable and fair.
Honestly, one of the best professors here at NYU I've had so far. Really down to earth and he is clearly passionate about teaching. His lectures are some of the best I've had despite it being an 8 AM.
He is is very passionate about teaching and cares a lot. The exams are not easy but are similar to homework and class notes, he just chooses the harder exercises but they are open notes at least in MFE. He curved a lot at the end but did not say how much, I was expecting a B- and got a B+. No reason not to take him, just get ready to work hard.
His hw takes long time to do. overall, he is great. accessible and willing to help.
Always online on campuwire and available for zoom calls. HWs are not that hard, the grading was lenient. This course is overall easy A.
He is one of the best math professors I've ever had, he tries to involve the class during lectures which is nice. With that being said, the homework/polished proofs are 5x harder than the class proofs and the test proofs are about 3x. Also, I don't recommend asking for a regrade unless it is an explicit mistake on his part.
Amazing professor!!!! Extremely clear lectures and notes. He is really willing to answer any questions you have. Definitely take him for math classes!!! TAKE HIM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best math courses I've taken if not the best all due to the professor. His lectures and notes are clear, organized, and set you up well for the exams. Homework is a bit tough, but you have a good amount of time to complete them; I'd say exams are a bit easier than the homework. If you have the opportunity to take him, then take him.
A great professor for discrete math. He gives clear lecture and detailed guidelines for hw. I also listened to his linear algebra lectures, they are also very good.
Decent professor, but beware of the mandatory attendance quizzes.
Ralph makes you feel you are actually learning things. Heads up, he can be a strict guy to deal with, and Friday Quizzes are awful, but you get 2 drops. 6 lecture skip. Homework bi-weekly and you get 1 drop. Tests ARE important and you need to pay attention to some trick questions. Other than that, he responds frequently, but mostly in Gradescope.
my favorite Prof at NYU for math. He's organized and caring for every student in his class.
No one does it like professor RC! I took MFE and Discrete and Statistics with him and I will take Linear, he teaches every topic amazing. Not an easy A, but very manageable. He seems to be getting more flexible and giving reasonable workload every semester.
A great guy but a really strict grader. Weekly quizzes and several polished proofs and problem sets for the semester. 3 exams worth 45% of your grade. He says he curves but does not actually.
I took Professor Chikhany for Discrete and I took him again for MFE II - amazing professor. Incredibly clear explanations, expectations, and lectures, fun personality, and incredibly accessible on Campuswire and during office hours. I will be taking him again for statistics because he's that amazing. 1000% recommend.
Midterm and final worth 60% which is annoying but he curved. The course is tough and a serious professor but no reason to not take him, lectures are clear and exams are similar to homework. He drops a lot of attendance polls and lowest homework and 2 quizzes.
I took his class in the summer. Fast-paced, amazing lectures!
I heard his other courses are more demanding but Statistics was pretty easy, 6 problem sets, weekly quizzes and 2 exams. He's really nice and lectures are very clear, answers questions quickly on Gradescope.
Amazing professor, really clear notes and lectures. Super accessible during and outside of class and makes lectures very fun. Definitely take him!
best best econ math/stats prof. def take him if you can. Everything is super organized, ALWAYS respond to campuswide within 24 hours with very helpful answers. Tests and midterms are super fair- just study hard.
I have taken Prof Chikhany for 3 courses and he has, once again, made his class fun, informative, and clear. lectures are well organized and well explained. guidelines are explained clearly. weekly recitations with quizzes, and three exams. this course specifically was curved, but that's not always the case. Take him if you can!!
Linear Algebra is a really hard class but he made it so clear. Attending lecture is important even though the notes have a lot of details. I wish he recorded lectures but a very solid choice, serious but fun class and prof.
Everything he provides is so organized and clear. The written homeworks are very long but the exam questions were pretty much the same as those. He is great at lecturing and is very patient with questions.
He implements a lot of drops and he curves but is not flexible much beyond that. This was an first course in statistics but he did not teach at the elementary level. He is very accesible on Campuswire and his lectures are very detailed.
THE BEST!!! Very NICE and SMART and KNOWS HOW TO TEACH. I was so scared but he made the course very interesting. TAKE HIS COURSE!
Very kind and helpful Professor, however the course was pretty hard.
Great lectures, explains really well! Also gives lots of resources on Brightspace, information is very organized. Nice guy and replies fast to students' questions on Campuswire. Material was difficult but you can definitely do well with effort.
If you can get a spot, TAKE HIS CLASS! I regret not taking MFE I with him but MFE II went great and MFE III is even better. So caring and nice and gives clear lectures!
He is a great funny professor for the MFE sequence and Statistics. The homework is hard sometimes but there are no surprises on exams. He provides many practice questions and explains the concepts in detail.
Great dude
Not a great professor for MFEI. Material was taught through pre-recorded videos which had MANY mistakes. He teaches the material quickly by jumping steps and explains the concepts poorly (maybe because he doesn't know how to teach an online course). Also, he can be petty and is the least understanding professor I've ever had.
PLEASE DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!! Really don't know why anyone would recommend him. Super boring lecture with heavy weekly quiz.
difficult to communicate with
he has no sympathy for his students and complains over the pettiest things. Exams were very difficult and lectures consisted of him doing problems over and over again with barely any explanation. Like we get it, you know how to do it, stop showing us, and actually TEACH us!
MFE I is extremely hard but Chikhany had prerecorded videos, met with us weekly and a lot of practice problems and recitations. Way more organized than my other online courses. The midterm was very easy but the final was long, he curved a lot though.
BEST CLASS AND PROFESSOR!!
This class is basically plugging in the right number and get a free A class except for the counting part and MOM/MLE estimation. Gives you a full 7-page formula packet for final. Super easy weekly quizzes and around half of each homework is graded on completion. Attendance is not mandatory in FALL23 since he canceled the polls after a few classes.
RUN.. He is very rude outside of the class, even in the class.Easy midterm but very difficult final without any curves. Don't understand why everyone recommended him.
He is good at making everything easy to learn and he is very experienced in combining math and economics in this econ-major math class. Easy test, quiz, lecture, homework.
Even though this is his first time teaching this course, he makes the course very clear and understandable. He has clear lectures, and tests are almost the same as the lecture or recitation.
I barely passed MFE I, the course was much harder than MFE II. But MFE II was more clear and organized. The exams are similar to lecture and HWs. We got 5 attempts on each webassign question and he drops a lot of low assignment grades at the end.
Prof. Chikhany is the best option for econ/math classes. His lectures are super clear and the brightspace page for mfe2 was super organized. He gives a lot of practice problems via recitation problems, p-sets, and lectures and the tests ask directly from those. There isn't really a curve for his class but that's because one isn't needed. Take Him!
Great professor. He teaches the material very well and you'll feel prepared for the tests no problem. Loved taking his class and would definitely take again.
Good professor
Prof. Chikhany is awesome! Lectures are very helpful. Hws and quizzes are not too bad. TAs weren't great, though. Midterm was quite easy, however final was harder.
I took two lectures with professor chikhany over the summer. Discrete math was a bit tough, Statistics was a breeze. There were weekly quizzes, homeworks and then a midterm and a final for each class.
I highly recommend professor Chikhany. This is a hard course but he makes everything clear and organized. The midterm was long, he gave extra credit.
He is the best!! He teaches statistics and linear algebra so well and has a lot of applications for items to make sense! He cares a lot and is funny in class.
Clear lectures/lecture slides. Makes difficult concepts seem easy. Doesn't record lectures, so be sure to pay attention during class. Weekly quizzes, two exams, & six problem sets make up grade, but none are too difficult. Highly recommend him!
100% take professor chikhany if you can, he is a fantastic professor. He is very talented at simplifying difficult concepts, and he is very open to receiving questions and making sure you understand the content. His exams are very easy to study for so long as you pay attention during class and keep up with the coursework, no surprises or curveballs
Statistics was a breeze with professor Chikhany. His lectures are clear with a lot of examples similar to the exams. The class TA Ian was very helpful as well.
Good class; Professor Chikhany was very understanding, gave clear lectures, and was available to answer questions on Campuswire. The course wasn't too challenging (in my opinion), though it was probably shortened a bit for the summer session.
FRIENDLY!!! HE IS THE BEST!!! I really hope that all of my math classes will be taught by him.
Professor Chikhany completely changed the way I view math. I was super scared to enroll in this class during the summer, but the videos were super useful, and during class, everything clicked for me. Each topic had connections to real life. Plus, he's really easy to talk to.
He can get a bit sassy sometimes but he is a great lecturer; he certainly simplified a lot of abstract concepts. He is also very patient with questions in class.
The best math class I've taken at nyu so far. The materials are super structured, and he made his stuff so clear to follow. The summer session really has a tight schedule, but he made me a solid foundation in linear algebra.
Avoid him. He is quite rude inside and outside of class. He has so many rules that you have to follow, or he will not answer your questions. For example, you have to make sure no one else asked similar questions before asking him, or he will question you quite in a rude way. He only wants to save himself time. Not a good professor!
His workload is much higher than classes taught by other professors. There are 9 problem sets (each takes more than 6 hours), weekly quiz, 2 polished proofs, 2 midterms, and 1 final. The material is quite boring and homework is so time consuming. Just imagine you spend 8 hours a week writing useless proof.
This course is really hard but the professor is so caring. The quizzes and the problem sets are also hard. But the exams are nice.
Discrete mathematics is not difficult, and Chikhany teaches it clearly. The subtle thing is that he seems a bit busy, tired, and impatient in and out of class. Weekly homework needs to be tediously written in Latex. Polished Proof includes subjective grading of Latex and formatting. Overall, the course is not that efficient and fun for me.
Took MFE 2 & econ stats. Overall, the course work is difficult but he's a fair teacher. Hes miles better than other math econ profs, and his class is designed to pay off hard work. Do the in class examples before the exam, they're identical. Also go to his office hours and get to know him, it'll pay off if he knows who you are.
Lectures are dull and he doesn't explain well. Material isn't that hard, but his test questions are.
Great class. Clear and organized lectures with videos to help study. Curves a lot.
Professor Chikhany makes stats a breeze. His clear lectures with relatable examples make the material easy to grasp. unstuckstudy was a game-changer for exam prep - highly recommend!
Chikhany's lectures, organized course and enthusiasm in the classroom prepared me for a lot of future courses. I wish he taught econometrics as well, I am sure I have had a better experience if he did. Chikhany is undoubtedly one of the best professors ever.
Discrete Math is a tough class with a lot of homework but he makes the course manageable. Polished proofs are really annoying as expectations keep getting more demanding. Professor Ralph is available a lot on Campuswire and answers all questions in class. Definitely take his classes!
Very organized and clear, and pretty strict. Harsh grading on exams, wish he has in person office hours
Very clear lecturer and does a lot of examples in class. That being said, his homework is lengthy and takes hours to do. Polished proofs are graded harshly and he expects a lot from us. He is funny during lecture but is very strict about phone usage in class. He cares deeply about his courses, so if you use AI you will be reprimanded. Be careful.
I took MFE II online and it was surprisingly smooth. Professor Chikhany made everything accessible, from lectures to homework and there are a lot of videos for support. You'll need to stay on top of the work with weekly HW and quizzes , but nothing felt overwhelming. He never ignores any questions and is very kind.
Best math professor ever. Very clear and structured lectures and notes. Although the homework may take some time, but his grading is fair. Overall 3 noncumulative exams, 12 online quizzes (drop lowest 2) and 11 homework (drop lowest 1). Will upload every materials and very accessible. Highly recommend.
MFE 2 had harder material but Chikhany explains/teaches the material in a much more organized and clear way. Tests were similar to examples in class and fair as long as you studied. Didn't have in person office hours but very accessible via Campuswire and responds quick!
Very organized and understandable discrete class. Emphasizes proof-writing ability which may be tricky for many but ultimately useful and rewarding later. Accessible outside of class and appreciates students taking effort, participating, etc. Decently forgiving grading and clear guidelines and grading practices.
HWs and lecture notes are so helpful when reviewing for exams. Best prof in the math department!
I took Professor Chikhany for Discrete math. He is very fantastic teacher. His lectures are very clear and easy to understand. He explains step by step, and he is very patient when students have questions. Also, the workload is good, not too much so I could manage with another summer class.
Only 5 HW and 5 Quizzes over the summer with a midterm and a final. His lectures are very clear, and the exams are similar to what is seen in class. Definitely recommend.
Took MFE2 with him this summer and he is awesome. Great at explaining difficult topics in a simpler manner and gives assignments that match up with the exam content. Really fair and caring---recommend him for any class.
Professor Chikhany was awesome for MFE II. He explained everything clearly so it actually made sense, and he's always there to help. His classes are chill but still organized, and he cares a lot about how we're doing. He also gave a generous extra credit quiz after the midterm.
Exams were unlike HWs, Recitations or Quizzes. Expects you to do just as good as HWs or he will think you are not doing it on your own and using other resources. His lectures are just him doing example questions and the questions on the exams don't look like them either.
hes great. The course materials are tough, thats just how it is. but he explains them super clearly. you get some credits just by doing hw and going to class. tbh best math prof so far.
this diva is sassy... homeworks are difficult, long, hard. exams are brutal but not as bad as mfe1. would study basically every night to tweak about a random integral/matrix. exams are somewhat fair, not always similar to given examples. HOWEVER compared to the rest of the evil present in the math department he is an angel sent from heaven.
Professor Chikhany teaches with the clarity and care you wish every math professor had. He explains concepts precisely and always offers extra guidance. His class has a calm, supportive energy even when the material ramps up. You will not regret taking him even for discrete which is a heavy class.
I took MFE II with Chikhany Spring 2025, and he was such a great professor. He prepares you so well for the exams and is very accessible to meet with outside of class. I did much better in this class than MFE I, and I think it was because of Chikhany. The class is difficult, but having a good professor makes all the difference.
tuff. wouldnt suggest
FINAL is way too hard
good prof but the midterms and final are like 70% of your grade alone (and they are so so so hard). he curved all the grades up by one whole letter though so idk but it's a hard class so beware.........
Horrible. Do not take.
He's an okay albeit a bit cruel individual. That final and midterm had me break down in a way no other class has. I practiced every homework, recitation assingment, practice question avaliable and I still felt under prepared. I invested well over 500 hours in total throughout the semsteer and I still failed. This isn't a review this is a plead.
His exam is so so so HARD!!! and 70% grade, and NO PRACTICE EXAM!!! This RMP is definitely not the real situation of him.
Run! Very hard class, hard exam, his 4.1 is not real, the hundred of 5 rate is definitely fake
Talks a lot of bs honestly. The first test average was very low and he told us sweet nothings about how it'll be fine in the end because of a curve but the curve honestly didn't do jack. Also is weirdly uptight at times and everything was just too difficult and he was not helpful at all.
MFE II is hard - no way around it - but Chikhany is honestly one of the better options compared to the hell MFE I was. He explains things clearly, does a ton of examples, and actually responds when you ask questions. His typed lecture notes before exams are so helpful. HW is long and annoying but it definitely helps for exams.
I really liked this class. Proofs are difficult but he teaches step by step and is always so clear in class. Lots of homework but it's very helpful and compared to other sections we had it easy.
RUN!!!!!!!!!!
Really knows how to teach.
MFE 3 is definitely the hardest class in the MFE sequence by a mile, but the workload is not very heavy (biweekly hw and online quizzes), so there is a lot of flexibility and time to study material. Midterm and Final were very fair in my opinion since questions were similar to the ones shown in lecture notes, hw, recitation etc.
I seriously can't recommend this dude enough. He's one of those rare professors who genuinely cares about his jobs and students. His lectures are super clear, and he's really approachable, if you need help, he'll explain things until it clicks. This was my second time taking MFE III and the difference in professors made all the difference.
great prof and course is not bad just abstract
Take him!! Exams are very similar to homework/quiz/recitation questions. Attending lectures and recitations matters. TAs were great. Lowk disappointed I didn't get an A, but I might've bombed the final. His curve is pretty decent. He's very accessible outside of class and responds to DMs quickly. One of the sweetest professors I've had! Take him!!!
Fantastic professor. Made me excited to show up to an 8am math class. Made very abstract concepts easy to understand. Workload is very manageable if you stay on top of it and exams are similar to homework and lecture problems.
