Well he is very knowledgeable I'll give him that but he is just so boring. Honestly this class put me too sleep. Really if you like rocks you'll enjoy this class but I didn't.
Dr. Dawes is a nerd to the nth degree. that being said, he was a really good teacher. if you keep up on the homework you will learn a lot. i took his astro, geo, and metr, classes.
The Astronomy class is online and a fair amount of work is assigned. Don't underestimate the importance of the labs or special projects. Put in the effort and you will do well. Very helpful with questions and great knowledge of the universe. Not an easy A but it is possible.
Dr. Dawes is a fascinating, brilliant teacher. You will learn a lot from him, but you absolutely must work very hard to gain good grades and knowledge from this class. He is clear about assignments and expectations, but is not always consistently helpful in more learning based struggles.
A very informative teacher in class, but his telecourses are very poorly organized. It is very hard to keep track of due dates for projects when there are dates for previous quarters mixed in with all of the current material. There was also a few times where he will have one date listed on the assignment page and another on the main schedule.
I found him a little frustrating. He clearly knows a great deal, but struggles to find a way to explain it in a meaningful way. He oozes "academic". Interesting course work, but hard.
Dr. Dawes is an incredibly efficient instructor with a vast wealth of knowledge. GEO is a perfect class to take for the budding geologists looking to explore the region, and his ASTR class will open your eyes to new, wonderful areas of learning. Take these, but expect to work your rear off. And learn the lingo; trust me, it helps.
I say the class was easy but it was definitely work. I completed the reading and did online discussions and summaries early so I was more prepared than others. Take advantage of starting on lab assignments early, quizzes and tests are open book. I put the effort and got an A. He will take care of you if you are dedicated and ask for help.
Excellent instructor, as proportionately helpful as the work you put in to the class. Very intriguing projects designed to stimulate cognitive processes as much as instill a love for geology in it's entirety.
Ralph really knows his stuff and makes sure that you know that. He assigns work that is not particularly hard but intended to engage his students. My main complaint is he is not very clear and can often be too wordy.
Dawes was the most useless teacher I have ever had. When I took his class he had several students drop. He laughs in your face when you ask him questions, and is very elitist.
Mr. Dawes floods his class with lecture and lab work. No textbook required but would possibly help. Forget asking him questions. A lot of information to absorb, good luck.
HE IS THE WORST. I have never had such an ineffective teacher. His lectures are hard to follow, he's an impossibly tough grader, and doesn't seem to care about his students at all (never even learned our names). And the textbook was utter crap, but you need it so save yourself the $$ and download a PDF of it.
The amount of work in this class was overwhelming. This a lab credit class so that is fair. It is imperative that you read the syllabus and class documents and follow the directions. Even then, I found that there were many trick questions on the quizzes . He answers your questions with another question, so be prepared to think critically.
HARD tests. lectures online are SUPER long, and take up Hours of my time. DO NOT take this class unless you seriously LOVE geology..
Dr. Dawes is one of the very worst teachers I have ever had. One would think a 101 class would be fun and a over view, nope! Not this class. Be prepared to look to many external sources to find the answers to the texts.
tough grader.
Wow, worst class ever. This was not a 101 class. Don't expect to get any help... or a good grade.
Very intelligent instructor but he expects his class to be on his level which is absolutely ridiculous. He doesn't seem realize we are required to take a lab. The majority of students have no interest in the class. It's required so we are in attendance. He would be better off at a University
Dr. Dawes requires a lot of reading to be done for his class. Some weeks included a stack of 70+ pages. Some of it isn't even worth it, so be prepared to spend hours of your sleeping time researching for out of class sources. Also, he removed a large portion of extra credit on the last day of class which dropped my grade by an entire letter.
Expects too much from a 101 level student. I took his class online and his teaching style really does not translate well through the screen. I found that he didn't respond to emails for and his responses were vague. If taken in person he would defiantly be an intense prof, but he might be more personable and easier to communicate with.
This professor is extremely difficult. His lectures barely tell any information on the labs. I am taking this class online and me nor some of the other students can figure out some of the questions. I spend many hours trying to find answers to the labs that are not there. If you like geology you may enjoy this class but if not just take biology.
YES there are trick questions on the quizzes & YES he will answer your question w/ another question. I worked really hard to get my "B" in this class, but it was a grade I was proud of because I knew I worked for it. This is NOT an easy course to take but all & all now looking back a year after this is still one of the best classes I took at WVC.
I loved the topic and his explanations.
Tons of tedious work, but ultimately it's all grounded fairly clearly on the assigned texts.
This guy is a straight up tweaker. Most of his instructions are extremely vague and I find it very hard to concentrate with his pointy head. Lots of homework, but nothing is really too hard.
Good start to the online class, but things turned worst. The terminology is very confusing for me to understand. Bad mistake for an online class. Expect long labs, not to mention the fact that Dr. Dawes is a tough grader. Confusing class in general. Don't take unless you've taken Geology 100. You have to work really hard for a good grade.
Poor class. Not what I expected it to be. Will not take a class from him again. Very confusing. No clarity whatsoever. If you love Geology, this is the class for you. Would not recommend this course being online, EVER. Information is really hard to grasp. Textbook was optional because of a flaw, maybe it could actually help. The labs were awful.
I was really disappointed with the class and professor. I feel like Dr. Dawes is at the wrong college to be teaching at his level of knowledge. He would be better off at a four-year university. He is a very intelligent person, and his intentions are good, but the expectations are really high. Power-points would've been better. Tedious lectures.
interesting course -it does have clear homework and lots of terms to learn you have to do the work without cutting any corners even if it is online the grades were fair overall-there are tests and papers to write up with references I spent around 3 hrs. weekly doing it
Expect to learn a lot with clear requirements Dawes is a fair grader yet expects you to put true effort into learning
This shouldn't be called a 101 class! Lectures are hard to follow. Tough on grading. Information was nice, learned more from the textbook and Google than I did him. Gets of track during lectures. Two quizzes per week, discussion board and week summary with an occasional lab.
Dr. Dawes has a unique lecture style that can be hard to follow. If you attend his class you will none the less gain knowledge. Handwriting is almost illegible.
Truly enjoyed learning all about geography in the Northwest The class does require really studying and putting time into essays and even fieldwork yet you gain knowledge that is useful for appreciating the history of the landscape around you
Dr. Dawes is a very intelligent person. He has put a lot of work into the online course materials. I would say that with his expertise he should be at a university teaching the course, because this can be a very challenging class for those who don't put in the effort. Stay on top of the assignments and always make sure to read over the lectures.
Not sure how he grades half the time and does not give explanations for why he gives you that grade. He gave me and a friend two totally different grades even though we did the exact same thing for a lab. He also expects you to mail in assignments by a certain date, so get ready to buy a stamp book.
Dr. Dawes is definitely smart, as he tend to talk down to all his students. His lectures are hard to follow, he assumes you know what he's talking about all the time without explanation. He's a perfectionist and will correct his own work 3-4 times during lectures making it easy for the mind to stray.
The professor really didn't teach. I expect a lot of self-directed study when taking an online course, but this was COMPLETELY self-directed. It's frustrating that with such a topic as Climate Change, you are not allowed to really share your opinion. The material in the quizzes didn't match the information given, leading to frustration.
Dr. Dawes clearly knows what hes talking about, if you ask a question he will explain it to where only he understands. I asked the same question three times and got no real answer back. Hell have a posted due date but make sure you turn it in before then otherwise you dont get full credit regardless of how well thought out your answer is.
Very lecture intensive and most of the time when taking quizzes/tests youre gonna have to do outside research along with the intense online lectures. Also he is a very inconsistent grader. You and a friend could turn in the same exact work and one will get a 10/10 and the other a 1/10. Take only if you really have to but the class is manageable.
Do not take him. That was the hardest class I have ever taken and everything was self taught. The lectures do not match the quizzes so I was left wondering what I was doing wrong and he gave absolutely no specific feedback. Oh, and he himself created the website youll use for lectures so being self taught in this class was very difficult.
Do not take this class if you don't have to. Dawes is a very inconsistent grader and hardly ever gives feedback. The lectures are long and tedious and you often have to do lots of your own research for quizzes and labs. Assignment weight is also horrible. Don't be surprised to see your grade drop 1 or 2% if you miss a few points on a discussion.
Took the online PNW 208 Geology class from Dr. Dawes. Do NOT take this class. There is no text book, only Dr. Dawes' self written lectures and labs for information, that are to hard to follow. Labs are terrible and impossible to do well in, and you have to mail a hard copy. Dawes gives no direction, this is a google the answer class.
Terrible teacher. Lectures were literally written in 2001, and have only been minimally updated since. Everything is unorganized and he repeats everything at least once, but is inconsistent with his facts so who knows what is real and what isn't. If he spent half the time he uses correcting grammar, redoing the class, we'd have a functional class.
He is an extremely harsh grader. I would ask him questions through email for my online class and he would give smartass comments or not answer my questions at all. This makes it very difficult for me to learn. Also, don't EVER send him things separately because if they arrive at differnt times he will give you a 0 for the one he hasn't gotten yet.
This is by far one of the hardest classes I had ever taken. Whenever asked a question, he would refer to how we should "reread the lecture". Regardless, his lectures held no information pertaining to the assignments. He has absolutely no care to teach the class properly.
Dr. Dawes is hands down the most frustrating teacher I've ever had in my schooling experience. When you submit assignments he does give feedback, unfortunately it's generic feedback and he sends the same thing to everyone, so you never know what you specifically did wrong. His lectures are poorly written and difficult to read.
Dr. Dawes just seemed to not really care and just went through the material very fast and not in great detail. Would not suggest.
So disappointed with Dawes. I let him know I knew my grade was low but I was really trying to improve it he replied with a smartass comment about how my grade didn't really affect him so why would he care. His advice was lazy and he would send the same generic feedback to every student. Shame that an interesting class can be ruined by the teacher.
Do not take this class, he is a tough grader and doesn't give helpful feedback on assignments. The workload in this class is unreal, don't take it if you do not have time to study and put all of your efforts into it. But for real don't take this class!
His quizzes have nothing to do with the material at times. Hes a very hard grader . He expects you to know the material fast. I had to HIRE a geology tutor so I can pass the course because there is no geology tutor on campus which makes it so much harder. Hes a very nice & smart man but I think hed be better off teaching at graduate schools.
This class was by far the HARDEST class I've taken to date. The amount of scattered information was all over the map (Pun intended). There were way too many pages of text to sift through and almost all of it was confusing to say the least. Quizzes and Labs barely aligned with the lectures making it hard to complete on your own.
It's annoying having to deal with him as he will go off tangent when giving the lectures and when you least expect it he will move on to the next problem. His reading reviews make no sense and sometime the information isn't in the book at all! If you need a natural science credit, I highly recommend not taking any classes with him
Hardest class I've taken from WVC, not enjoyable at all. Lectures and overall course was poorly organized and difficult to work through. Dawes is obviously a well educated, intelligent man but he holds unattainable standards for a beginner class. Please take a different natural science class for your own sake, it'll save you a lot of frustration.
This class is difficult. If you put in the time, do the extra credit, and have some passion for the topic, you will do fine. A lot of reading. A lot of research done outside the classroom lectures. Sometimes he can be vague with the help but, often times the answers can be found within the instructions. Stay on top of material, couple days ahead.
The worst class I have taken here. I havent received final grades yet, so assuming my grade, but let me say-DO NOT take this class if you are anything short of a genius. His lectures are wordy, and not comprehensible for the average reader. I will say one thing, he deserves the Dr in front of his name, but he needs to be teaching grad students.
Wouldn't recommend taking this class because it's an online class. The lectures are written by the professor himself, the information in those lectures are vague and it doesn't correlate with the labs and quizzes. Asking for feedback if you didn't do well on a lab is basically a waste of time because he doesn't give good feedback.
His Geology of the PNW class is supposed to be beginner/entry-level, so no prereqs. Well, he expects you to already have a lot of previous knowledge about the stuff you are reading about. The lectures and labs you have to read are written dryly and are hard to understand. The Drawings you have to submit, have the worse description ever.
Dawes is extremely smart, so much so that the textbook is literally written by him. His feedback is extremely vague and does not give you solid answers within the text to actually do the quizzes. I did not much research outside of the millions of pages assigned. Its an entry level class but has very high expectations. Nice guy but too smart for LCC
Also very boring during lecture but luckily he does give quite a bit of extra credit, though it wasn't enough to get an A and I'm usually a good student imo. Don't even expect to pass the class without the book since a lot of the stuff on the tests aren't even in lectures. He's not a bad guy, but he's very tough as a professor.
This is the worst class that I have taken before. Lecture's do not always give you the answers to the quizzes and labs. When asked for more help the help was vague and got me no where. I would not recommend taking this class.
Buyer beware. This class made me hate rocks. Not really but it was close. Maybe Dawes is better in person but online it is just bad. DONT. DO. IT. CLICK AWAY or your first day of the week will be Friday and the last day of the week will be Thursday. WHY? IDK!!! but I'm suspecting for chaos's sake. - Sincerely a normally straight A student
His lecture don't teach you ANYTHING about what will be on your tests or homework so you basically have to read the textbook or find a quizlet in order to get even a slightly good grade. Even though the lectures don't help you can't skip them cause he gives major participation points during every class. Don't take him unless you HAVE to.
He posted a 4 hour final exam 2 days before it was due with absolutely zero warning. Very frustrating as we were already a couple days into finals week and with there being no mention of any sort of final, I sent my textbook back. Very unhappy with this professor and would NEVER recommend.
Dr. Dawes is knowledgeable in what he teaches which is very good when you are confused, but expect to be confused a lot. The labs are long and at weird hours but if you show up you will get every answer and therefore a good grade. The trick to this class is going above and beyond during the weekly summaries and weekly discussions. Just do the work
I took Dr. Dawes geology of the PNW online for fall quarter. I usually only had work to do on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Sundays had a TON of work to do though. The class is a lot of work but it is fairly easy to get an A as long as you put some time in and are detailed/thorough when writing discussion posts and weekly summaries.
I wish I could give Dr. Dawes a shot, but there is no way I would willingly take this class again. I had to undergo pure agony to keep my grade this high. I am typically the stereotypical "straight A's" student, but this man made me have a burning hatred towards him, without even knowing him. Never take this class, unless you like suffering.
terrible communication with no feedback his lectures DO NOT HELP AT ALL. The due date was on Friday, so I would typically do them Thursday afternoon. He would knock off points because he wanted it to be turned in on Wednesday but did not make that clear whatsoever. RUN WHILE YOU CAN
I have never experienced anything worse than this man being my professor. Terrible professor and was the least helpful teacher I have ever had.
Way to advance for an entry-level course, highly do not recommend.
Dr. Dawes is arguably the worst professor I have ever had. He does not warn of supplies needed in advance. You will be trying to keep up with the weekly workload as it flows into the next week. He is condescending and does not answer questions in a polite way. You will work hard and your grade will not reflect that. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
This class has a VERY high demand. It's too advanced and overwhelming for an introductory class. Can't say I'm leaving this class learning anything. Watch the lectures and you'll get by. Also the website he uses is confusing and you'll have tons of tabs open all the time lmao. I feel like he would've been a great teacher in real life but not online.
DO NOT TAKE ASTR101 WITH DAWES! With discussions, quizzes, tests, weekly reviews, and projects, something is due almost every single day. On top of that, 8 hours of lecture videos each week. This 101 class is a HUGE time commitment so your grades in other classes will also suffer. As others said, condescending. Unclear. Rambles off-topic. Bewarned.
Without a doubt the worst professor I've encountered in my college career. Good work does not result in good scores in his assignments. If you do the work you'll do well, however his grading standards are all over. Lectures, the one night of 3 hours of class, are him reading his own past materials and not clearly answering concerns/questions.
I love astronomy, however, this Professor seemed to make this course more difficult than it needed to be. There is no clear way he will grade your work. Sure, you could say that he "uses" a rubric, but even when you follow it, it seems as if he would come up with unknown loopholes for you to jump through.
He's a very tough grader. Hardly gives feedback, most of the time if you do good he'll respond with "great". You have to give more than what's expected to get a decent grade. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Also if you ask for help he'll most likely send you a link to a website.
You should stay clear no matter the circumstances. This is the worst prof at WVC. He is impossibile to deal with for an introductory course. There is no way to please this man with his arbitrary grading system. You can do assignments verbatim of his notes and he still fails you.
His grading standards are all over the place, he does not "stick" to a proper grading system and seems to forget his own rules that he puts down for projects and labs. Any amount of good work that you put down is not enough to receive a good enough score.
This professor gives out too much hw and feels like im taking a way higher astronomy class.
I've gone to 7 schools and dealt w so many teachers Dawes is the worst I've ever had. His class is hard, and he doesnt offer help when I ask, he ghosted me. He gave me a 0/250 point final only bc I didnt have pictures. The 8 pages of carefully written work was 100% disregarded. besides this, his grading system sucks, his lectures are 20yrs old.
Tons of work, over what should be a weekly limit. Not only this, but work is not even close to entry level geology, prof is out of touch with reality.
On assignments he claims are very easy and many students pass easily, I end up failing, even if I followed everything he said during lectures. If answers are not written the way he wrote them, then expect to get them wrong. This doesn't feel like a beginner's Astrology class. 1/10 do not recommend.
One of my hardest classes EVER! He is extremely confusing with both instructions and assignments. I spent 30 hours a week on this class at a minimum. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!! However, if you get stuck in this class like I did; meet with him overZzoom or in person, he will likely give you a better grade (that's what I did).
I wouldn't take this class again. He rarely has a rubric for grading, it's basically a free for all regardless of what you do. The material doesn't match the quizzes and this is anything but an introductory course. You'd be better off sticking to a different class if you want your GPA to stay somewhat intact. Good luck.
This professor is easily the worst teacher ive ever had. He gives you a big lecture to read and you have to do many assignments that are only vaguely related to eachother or the lecture. He grades however he wants and doesnt give any explanation when you get a low score. He has vague outlines for projects, and all his material are from before 2014.
This professor is one of the hardest grading professors I've ever had. His lectures are all from 5-10 years ago. All answers for weekly quizzes and tests are on the videos you just have to pay super close attention to them. The final is 250 points and it's a field study. If you're not up for a challenge I dont recommend this class.
So much homework
I'm only on the first week and I already want to drop this class but I need the lab credit. I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you want a social life in any way. The lectures are both outdated and they don't cover much of the material at all. I wrote a 500-word response to a lab question and he just said "ok". STAY AWAY!!!
Dr. Dawes astronomy class has way too much work and is too strictly graded for an intro course. I was very exited to learn more about astronomy before this class, but not anymore. On my last lab paper he gave me half credit for not citing sources when he was the one answering all of the questions in the lab, I was writing down his words. Stay away.
Taking this class made me hate my life and hate geology more. Mr. Dawes is a very educated geologist but is NOT by any means a professor you want.
Dr Dawes is a strict grader and his instructions are very confusing. He's very particular and often does not actually include all the requirements in the instructions. He once told us to mail him an assignment and then after I did that, he told me that I needed to send an image of the assignment and turn it in.
very harsh grader and hard to understand what you did wrong. With all of the readings it is difficult to find the exact information you need. He doesn't like when you use google or websites and prefers that you only use what he gives you. Assigns 6 assignments every topic usually all due in same week or two weeks.
this is the worse class I've ever taken, I want to ropemaxx. he gives me 3.5/15 on like every assignment and the class average grade is like a 4/10 for every assignment. do not take this class, I feel terribly depressed and extremely overwhelmed by the work that this professor provides.
