He is gross. He never takes the time to explain anything. He simply says "look in your book". Well if that's all we have to do - why do you come ****????
A very unhelpful teacher. His tests are not a fair representation of what is actually taught in class. He is not a very nice guy either, he kind of makes you feel stupid for asking questions. STOP WEARING SHORTS 100% OF THE YEAR!!
He really is not a good teacher. Exams are way too hard. You study your brains out and you are lucky if you get a B. His labs are worse - every week is like studying for a final. The worst thing is that he is the only one available for this subject. F-
Shorts? I'm right with ya man.
Gibson is the worst professor I've had so far. The class is horrible, the tests are rediculous. It was the worst grade I ever got, all because of the exams. They don't make sence and aren't graded fairly. I wouldn't recommend the class to anyone.
leave the shorts for the summer!! this guy can't teach; he is boring as anything. one of my friends slept through almost the whole semester, because his voice us so monotonous. not very helpful or friendly!
Oh god this guy is boring as anything, i remember staring at the white brick wall watching my eyes make patters on it while i slipped in and out of consciousness, he teaches to the first two rows, and there werent enough seats for everyone some people sat in the stairway. Plus the labs are taught by some russian who doesnt speak english It SUCKS!
Not very interesting, especially after Doerder has taught the 1st half of the semester. yeah, does he still play with the coins in his shorts pockets while lecturing? Does he still always say "hunker down"?

i dont know whos worse doreder or gibson. they are both so pompous and arrogant it is impossible to learn from them. obviously intelligent men w/o a clue how to teach, not approachable, not fair, unconcerned with the education they ARENT giving their students. Not to mention its hard to take anyone seious who wears socks w/ sandles and has a skullet
He doesnt make class very interesting, and doesn't have very good lecture skills. You can tell he is trying, but he is just not a very good teacher. His test questions are slightly easier that Deoeder's, but still hard. Avoid him if you can.
This class is the Bio2 Lab. This is by-far the HARDEST LAB available at CSU. Expect to study 8-12 hours for the weekly quizzes, and spend 4-6 hours on the lab reports weekly if you want an A. All of this work for a 1 Credit LAB, ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! At least the TA's set up and run the labs well - which is the only bright spot.
Tough class but it is still possible to get an A. This is the kind of class where you put the most time in. Study the notes extensively and use the notes as an outline when reading the textbook. His lectures tend to be somewhat dry but try to pay attention because some lecture questions may appear on tests.
He's not bad - But this is a TOUGH class to get an A in.
Gibson would be a bad prof, if we didn't have Doerder for comparison. He's as charismatic as a wet napkin but he knows his stuff well. Difficulty of BIO 202 and especially the lab are way over the top. I've taken more advanced courses since this one and ALL were easier. To his credit Gibson is great at answering out of class questions.
His tests are easier than Doerder's, but he is hard to pay attention to in class...most of the students used this class for their naps :)...gets worse in BIO 202/203..labs were hard...the hard thing about this class, is him covering alot of material in a short amount of time...not impossible to get an A if u accept this challenge...
How can I say? Are he and Deorder teachers that should teach?? He and Mr. Deorder never made me understand anything in their class. All I learned were on myself.
He's a little better than Doerder, but still pretty rough. He explains a little more thouroughly, but he's pretty rushed through all his material. You will have a comprehensive final. Mine was on 23 chapters and it was supposed to be 24. Good luck, you need it!
sucks
Please anyone please tell the BIO DEPT don't ever use this teacher to teach BIO200 and 201 in 2007/2008. Neither Gibson nor Deorder are good for teaching these important intro courses. They could not let us understand. Tests were given too hard by them.
His tests and powerpoints are easy and straight forward. Very funny guy who's got a great dry sense of humor. His tests are right of the powerpoint. You have to spend some time studying but not a hard class over all. Getting an A isn't that hard. Stop complaining and grow up. You're not in highschool anymore.
Amazingly insuffecient of a professor. He acts incapable of explaining concepts in understandable terms, as if he would rather prove that he is too smart for this material. Seems to take pride in his students doing poorly in the class. Just because a person knows the subject does not mean they can teach it.
He might be the worst professor in the whole since building that i had so far. His tests are really hard, but he gives huge curves. very boring and uses uuhhhh at least 50 times a class
I attended class for the pop quiz points, but other than that, I used the time to catch up on my sleep -- his boring lectures were good for that!
VERY POOR, CRUDE AND CLUELESS STYLE OF TEACHING! DRAINED ALL OF MY INTEREST IN THE SUBJECT!
HORRIBLE teacher. Very monotone and boring. He is very intelligent and interested in biology but he cannot teach it. He makes sad attempts at jokes throughout the class and is basically no help at all. Very strict and seems to take the class way too seriously. Its introductory biology not a 400 course!
I think those who come to give dr. gibson bad ratings are those who didnt appreciate his style of teaching. For lack of a better word I think you guys are haters. Dr. Gibson is very clear and gets straight to the point. He may be dull at time, but what he expects is by far not impossible. This is BIOLOGY!! of course its going to be touch. So go
Very monotone, but decent teacher. Literally reads the powerpoints word for word in lecture, but he gives examples on the side to better explain concepts. Would recommend to students.
He is a very disrespectful human. Monotone and annoying. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS.
This man is very disrespectful and rude. He doesnt take the time to answer anyones questions. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MAN.
Nice, smart, and even though reads right off the powerpoints he is doing everything from the book, bio is hard to teach but he did well. read the book, listen to what he needs, and reread. thats how you get an A in college
His tests are hard. Multiple choice questions with more than 5 choices. Lecture is hard to sit through and it is powerpoint driven.
An intelligent individual, but condescending and incapable of conveying thoughts to others. Lingers on easier topics and speeds through those that are harder to comprehend. Monotone and un-interested in what he teaches. He wears a scowl and dances around the class a lot. He is a poster child for the disgruntled hippy movement, without the humor.
Dont ever ask him to Post the lecture note a day b4.
A very hard professor, fly through notes, expect students to devote their life to bio. The class is very difficult even though its only intro to biology. And the tests are impossible to get an A or B without the curve. Good luck to whoever has to take it
You can tell he truly loves biology. He has a weird sense of humor... He tends to fly through power points and sometimes listening to him is pointless. His tests are somewhat ridiculous.
Dr. Gibson's lectures were great... very interesting presentation of material, different from what is in the book so go to lecture!!!! His questions are straightforward, no tricks, and they come from his lectures. He has an almost childlike fascination with biology, i left class really feeling the wonder and magic of life. Sense of humor: yes
Dr. Gibson was a great lecturer, his lectures were fun to listen to and wow, talk about a ton of material in a short amount of time. This is a hard class, mostly because the amount of material covered is huge... Dr Gibson did a great job explaining the material.
I feel bad for him because biology is hard to teach. He is nice, but his tests are just so hard. I loved biology and now I'm changing my major. Way too hard, read every note and every chapter and still did bad even with the curve. Its too insane.
I am currently in Bio 200/201 with Drs. Modney, Doerder and Gibson. Lecture is 95% from text and exams are ridiculously difficult with huge curves and only 50 minutes to take. 6 chapters a week to learn. Designed to weed out students. Take this at CCC or Case. Gibson dresses like a bum - his appearance is completely unacceptable for a prof.
Explains material easily. He is one of the teacher that teaches a class and you paying attention doing something else. He keeps the class interesting. Exams are EASIER that Dr. Doerder
Intelligent dude. I admire his advanced knowledge in Biology and ability to wear sandals with socks. The course sucked, but I can attribute that to the style of teaching is crop-dusting the powerpoints. Just go to to every SLA and don't fail the final which is worth 40% of ones grade.
Out of all three professors who teach BIO 200, Dr. Gibsons lectures on biological evolution were by far the most fascinating and entertaining to listen too. Dr. Gibsons office door is always open if you have a question, or need further clarification on a certain concept. Great professor, VERY tough class (got an A-). It is possible to do well!!
I had Gibson for the Bio 269 lab and all I can say is that the guy is tough. Yes his door is always open and he says he's there to help but when put to the test he really wasn't. Take the lecture and lab at your on risk.
tests come straight from the notes and lecture. I really enjoyed his lectures on animals. really no problem doing well with his portion of 202 if you know your stuff.
Attendance not mandatory but youd be wise to go. i rarely used the book. all test material came from lect. and ppt/notes. very knowledgeable and willing to help. quick to respond to emails. tests are hard but curves. you MUST keep up. i recommend his classes.
He expects you to know biology coming in. He doesnt really teach the material, he just brushes over it. Not a good professor. But if you take the class, make sure you learn the information prior to the first day of class.
Despite his quirky nature, Dr. Gibson is an incredibly helpful and knowledgeable professor. His class is undoubtedly one of the hardest I've ever taken, but he certainly loved helping students learn the material. Prioritization, memorization and familiarity is everything in BIO 202. Be prepared to devote ample time for studying.
He is a very nice guy, and extremely passionate about his subject matter. He moves rapidly through material and tests are hard. Class isn't necessary, he reads directly from the slides. Although he does not teach it, the labs are interesting and usually fun. He is there for you if you need help.
Tests are hard, but very fair. He is a VERY confusing lecturer, because you can't tell what he's emphasizing (I record the lectures). Tells a lot of storiesexamples that are on the exam, so it would be wise to attend lecture or record it. Do not take bio 200202 if you can avoid it, seriously. It's possible to do well but lots of work.
He's tough, but fair. Nothing on the exams will be something he didn't talk about in class. LOVES example questions. Questions are straightforward, he doesn't try to trick you. Will, however, ask questions on tiny little details. You have to basically memorize every single slide, and there are a LOT. Non-science majors: DO NOT TAKE.
Dr. Gibson is an amazing professor. His lectures are always interesting and he is very involved with the material. You can tell he loves his stuff, he's always glowing with excitement with his examples. Exams are hard but if you put the time in it is for sure an easy A, especially if you love biology.
Gibson was the most uninspiring teacher I had at CSU. He simply reads off the slides and that's it. The exams are 60 questions but they are frustrating because he asks for the very minute details. You may know the general concepts of biology and how things work but you may get a B+ because you couldn't remember how big a specific bacteria was.
Okay, everyone saying Dr. Gibson is boring I'm not sure what class you were in. Students at CSU, we are used to professors testing us like we are still in high school. Not Gibson. I will be honest I got C's on my first 2 tests for studying 2 nights before. For this class you learn the definition of STUDYING! If you do no have those skills, :
I feel like Dr. Gibson is a very intelligent and talented professor, but I don't really feel that he necessarily cares about his students. He will answer questions but often tends to talk down to students and make them feel dumb for not immediately understanding materials. I don't think I could pass without the SI sessions
Dr. Gibson got to teach the evolution/natural selection section of BIO200. His powerpoints were VERY long and had a lot of information on it that had to be memorized. Though his material was boring and easy, I did enjoy his dinosaur facts (all the Jurassic Park references too!!!!) and his lecture on how turkeys mate. Pay attention!
Had him for 200/202, but now just teaches 202. Teaches half of 202, make sure to record the lectures any thing said is fair game on exams. Make sure to remember all dates and times, pretty much everything said and written
Sometimes he's very confusing because he goes off topic a lot and into great detail about things are irrelevant to the important topics in biology. And some of those things he goes off subject with might show up on the test. But at least 90% of the test material is on the slides and not really from the textbook.
Dr. Gibson is a great professor! Grading criteria was made very clear, and largely based off of the lecture notes. He is passionate about biology and this is made clear by his presentation of it in class. If you want to learn bio and test yourself, take this class.
There's no denying Dr. Gibson's class is tough, and you really do need to know the minute details of it all. With that being said, you learn real quick the types of questions he will ask: dates, age, size, anything with numbers, anything involving beer, and interesting, out of the ordinary facts. Study for a little bit each day and you'll be fine.
He goes on tangents for every slide and stutters a lot. It's hard to follow what is truly important. Also he's a bit of a grumpy gills. Unfortunately, you can't really avoid taking his classes if you're in the major but if you can. Modney and Corbett are far easier to understand and don't reprimand the entire class like highschoolers.
He talks a lot. Be prepared, he will get off topic and spend so long in one slide and not focus on the main part of the content. His tests are all based on his examples in class. I would reccommend recording his lectures. There will be math related questions. Study well and do not wait until the last minute!! His questions are tricky, but not hard
Dr. Gibson definitely knows his material. However, his class is way too hard for an intro biology class. The average exam score is frequently 60 for a class of 200. He goes off on extremely long tangents in lectures, sometimes spending 20 minutes on a single slide. He is occasionally very condescending and yells at the class. Avoid if possible
Found his lectures to be hard to follow b/c of his tangents. His lecture slides have way too much information which makes it even harder to follow what he's talking about. Nice guy, takes his job seriously, very interested in biology so he's a great resource 1 on 1. Test questions were lengthy but OK if you finally understood material.
Gibson is to date my hardest professor. His lecture style forces you to memorize a lot.
HORRIBLE. Does not care about his students, exams are extremely detailed and difficult. A-E are all correct, which ever answer fits best is the answer he wants. AVOIDDDDD. He just reads off his slides which are pointless either way. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
The single worst class I have ever taken. I am pre med so I am used to hard courses, but this is pathetic. They tell you the book is useless first day because they dont teach from it yet they give zero homework or quizzes to help you study. Only grades are test grades and slight class participation which is strictly graded. Avoid avoid AVOID
type up all the reports and use references if mentioned, show-up for all the labs, ask questions, do good on the weekly quizzes. the professor overall attitude and demeanor I didn't like but that's half the professors nowadays. still passed so that's all I cared about.
His exam questions weren't too difficult if you understood the material. Ask questions, go to his office, send him emails, go to SI, put the effort in! His slides read like a textbook, edit them and make them more concise. Relisten to the lectures if you have to. Make flashcards. Draw diagrams. Figure out what works. I got an A, you can too.
The best thing to do in his class is to record the lectures and print the slides to take to class with you and write additional notes on the slides. He is very knowledgable but sometimes forgets that other people don't already know the material and goes through it quite fast.
For his section, the slides are your best friend. Pay attention to his examples!! Youtube videos and the book will NOT help you as much as just reading and memorizing the slides. His lectures are boring but his exam questions are straight forward. He's very strict... DO NOT TALK DURING HIS LECTURES!
I am a post - graduate pre- medicine student. I have 7 years of education under my belt with 140 credits meaning I've had ALOT of professors. By far he is the rudest, worst, non specific professor I have ever had. You do not need the book as it is strictly notes from class and studying the slides given in class online. Study the SLIDES!!!
Seems to know a lot about what he teaches, but he's insensitive, and contempt with students who don't come in knowing anything. Tests are very difficult if you don't study, to the point of ridiculous. He goes through lecture very fast, and gets upset when there are whispers. Classic doctor demanding respect and undivided attention at all times.
Be prepared for a lot of memorable one-liners! Dr. Gibson is really funny and smart! He essentially just lectures at us but he does try to make things interesting. He's a good dude.
The TA is hard to understand, and did not see him much in my last semester, he seems nice, but doesn't say much. I hate science so I wouldn't take again. It's really not that bad though. GO TO THE LAB, answer all the questions for the report, study for prequizzes, and enjoy the ride! Need cover page on report.
Dr. Gibson was not one of the best professors I had but he also wasn't the worst. Lectures can be very very boring at times sometimes I almost wanted to fall asleep. He is a very nice person outside of the classroom can just be boring at times.
Avoid if possible. His tests are based on lectures, not the book. Will test on the tiniest details in the PowerPoint slides. Will test on things he mentions in class but are not in PowerPoints. If he goes over an example for 20 minutes, know it!!! Go to class and record lectures. Extremely knowledgeable. not impossible to get an A, just very hard.
Gibson is exactly what you would expect out of a university bio professor. Anything he says in lecture is fair game on an exam so if you study for an hour you aren't going to get an A. He does test on examples given in class but they're always relevant to the course material. Plus there is a curve. Every once in awhile lecture will be super boring.
Have to study a lot to earn a good grade. A lot of the information in the slideshows isn't on the exam so its really important to study/focus on the difficult stuff. Teaches at a slow pace.
Theres no interaction, just slides and lots of talking. You get three professors and they all read off slides. If you love biology and want to know biology do not take this class. I wish I could get my money back...
I won't say that he makes the subject easy, but he does lecture the information effectively if you're willing to listen. Many of the classmates I saw complaining about their grades were the same ones that were on their phones during lecture. Biology is a serious field and should be treated as such. Put in maximum effort and you'll be rewarded.
I had Gibson 2 years ago and I've been his SI leader for 3 semesters. My encounters with students from this class is that they're frustrated with the content and don't want to study for it/take notes in class, then they get mad when they do poorly. Just take notes on what he says, use the flashcards, AND STUDY AHEAD OF TIME NOT THE NIGHT BEFORE.
boring lecture-er, very very difficult tests (cumulative)... prepare yourselves
Gibson is fine, there's not much to complain about besides the fact that he is sometimes difficult to understand and somewhat boring . I think that people are asking too much of university profs, they are not high school teachers, so don't expect them to treat you like kids. Put in the work and pay attention, and you will see good results.
the class was remote, his lectures were monotone and he would jump all over the place from one slide to another-- if you want an A or B, you really have to study like 20-30+ hours a week and quizzes are not based off powerpoints at all-- i definitely would not take it again, do not recommend, also don't expect him to answer your emails!
Literally the worst prof ever. Does not answer emails. Does not care about you. He is on his HIGH HORSE thinking he is the smartest dude ever by making our lives harder since online. No curve, unnecessarily tough on quizzes. I hate his guts so much. I love bio and I do well in it but not with these profs for bio 202. They. Make it 100x harder.
An absolute jerk. Does not understand the level of stress we are under. Decides to add short answers to the quizzes which literally bring down your grade by at least 2 letter grades. Beyond impossible to do well or get full points on those. They are not clear with what they are asking and everyone in this class is suffering.
Dr. Gibson was a great professor! His lectures could be a little boring, but that's expected for bio. He definitely listens to his students and adjusts; we had complaints that the extended responses on a quiz were graded too harshly, so he immediately reevaluated and gave us points back. His quizzes were easyish, but you do have to study for it.
Lectures were long but took the least time to complete, compared with the other 2 professors. He made sure to explain thoroughly what he wants you to remember. Speeding up the recording helped to get to the points he highlighted. Questions are exactly as he explained them in lectures. Most straightforward professor I've had.
Not sure why Dr. Gibsons difficulty is higher than the other two professors. His section was the easiest. His lectures were long and sometimes boring, but his points were clear and his quizzes covered everything taught in lecture. Quiz questions were super straightforward. Very nice guy, just has trouble with the technology and emailing back.
worst teacher ever! what's the point of having a Ph.D. when you don't even know how to teach! it is almost impossible to understand his lectures so be prepared to study on your own. there is no clear explanation for his lectures and most of the time he is just stuttering and mumbling. he spends 30min just figuring out how to use a computer.
Hes really nice! but the classes were so boring and I couldnt understand that much, hes horrible at grading and doesnt post a lot of feedbacks or stuff for extra credit like other professors! But whats the point of him being nice if he doesnt know how to deliver information!
Quizzes are extremely tough!!! Just when you think, "yeah, I've studied so much for this I'm going to do fine" SIKE you're wrong. No matter how much you think you're ready, those quizzes will slap you in the face and call you stupid. Nice man but wow, is his class hard.
Nice guy but horrible professor. He just goes on and on in lectures and it's very confusing and boring. Majority of people don't pay attention and people look around to see if anyone else gets what he is saying. Also, he has quizzes every other week which covers so much material and no study guides.
Dr. Gibson's lectures were boring but he seemed like a nice guy. His section was definitely the easiest out of the group. You still have to study though. You should also go to the study sessions. The quizzes were pretty straight forward and he was willing to work with the students when there were issues.
This professor was by far one of the worst professors I have taken in my life. His exams asked questions unrelated topics to the point where he might have asked about his pony tail and he would expect you to know it. He also does not speak clearly, is extremely boring, stutters with every breath, and is extremely rude. Avoid at ALL COSTS!!!
