Had Comp Lit 375: Lit and law with him. Didn't have a lot of interest in the class to start with but it turned out to be very interesting. Papers are very short and to the point. However the final papers is long. You are expected to talk in class. In general good class.
Prof. Grunewald is a great professor. He is knowledgable in the subject field and has a great sense of humor. The only downside to his class is his subscription to the Socratic method. Be prepared to talk in this lecture.
Decent teach. Tries hard to involve class in lectures which are mandatory, miss more than 5 or something and you fail. Tests are pretty fair. Go to lecture, do the readings and you've got at least a B
decent professor. way too much work for an intro course though! there is too much reading and the exams arent really fair.(only 8ppl got an A on the first quiz out of a 280 person lecture) TA not good
Great Professor! Funny and makes power lectures easy to get through, one of my favorite professors!
He makes the lecture into a discussion, calling on people to answer questions that you just want him to clarify. Be prepared because usually the first 20 mins of lecture are pointless as he tends to review emails he got from students. The tests are also super difficult. It's too bad b/c the material is interesting, but he just isn't organized.
Great professor. Lectures are interesting, he calls on people which is really unique and keeps you awake and focused. The tests are only hard if you miss class, don't do the readings, and don't study. The readings are long but both the textbook and the reader are interesting. He is very organized, enthusiastic, and I learned a ton.
One of the best professors I have had. Make lectures fun and entertaining. I would very highly recommend taking this class.
Professor Grunewald was my favorite professor so far here at Madison! He makes lectures extremely interesting and is really funny. It's a tough course and a lot of work, but definitely worth it!
Easily the best professor I've ever had. He's extremely knowledgeable about the topic (he was a lawyer), engages the entire lecture by encouraging discussion, and he's funny! The class has a fair amount of reading, but if you have any interest in criminal justice you will love all of it. Very interesting and relevant. Take this class!
Ralph is awesome. Not an overly difficult class, and you learn a ton about the criminal justice system in the US. Lecture attendance is mandatory, as is discussion attendance, but its worth it. Highly recommend this class and Professor Grunewald
Professor Grunewald is awesome. His lectures are engaging; he actively includes students in his lectures, examples, and discussion. He incorporates current events and reviews most of the material in the reader while in lecture. He does have mandatory attendance (>6 absences= fail), but they're interesting so you won't find it hard to go!
Is extremely engaging
RALPH IS THE BEST PROFESSOR HERE AT MADISON. My favorite class ever - I am now getting my certificate in Criminal Justice because of this course. Lectures are very engaging. Tests are very do-able as long as you read the assigned readings, which are very interesting. Great class to take!!
By far my favorite professor I've had. He makes sure the power lectures don't get boring and he loves to interact with the students, which is nice in a 300+ person lecture. The information was extremely interesting as well and you can tell he loves teaching it. I registered for another class with him next fall because I liked him so much! Take him!
Interesting and enjoyable class overall. Prof. Grunewald was involved and easy to listen to. However, the grading in this class was not curved. As a result, 6-7% of our 300 person lecture (about 21 people or so) received As. Be prepared to do the work!
Incredibly helpful and fair professor. Very committed to seeing his students do well. Lectures were well organized and interesting. Guest speakers were often poor but he reexplained the important parts of their lectures himself. Only complaint was that taking attendance each lecture was cumbersome for a 300 person class.
Definitely my favorite professor. He makes the class interesting and easily captures everyone's attention. His tests aren't too bad, as long as you prepare well for them.
He's a great guy but you are graded entirely by TA's. Lecture was interesting and understandable IF YOU ARE A LEGAL STUDIES MAJOR! His class consists of lots of reading, 2 essays, 2 exams.
Ralph is an awesome professor; funny, clear, and presents an potentially sleep-inducing subject in an interesting and engaging way. He treats lecture more like a seminar and calls on people frequently.... beware. You can only miss 3 classes. Exams/papers are tough but still fair.
Professor Grunewald is one of the best professors at UW-Madison. He's clear, concise, and makes the most of lecture time. He's approachable for questions and guides you with exam preparation. Take this class!
He was a very interesting lecturer but is very intimidating at the beginning of the class.
Grunewald is AWESOME! He makes the class so interesting that even his power lectures are enjoyable. He's super nice and funny, so it's easy to approach him. He sincerely cares about his students and has a lot of passion for the topic. If you can, TAKE THIS CLASS!
Can't say enough good things about this professor. It is a tough course but he is more than fair, approachable, nice, and you will learn more than you thought you ever could. I wish Madison had more professors like him, he cares so much for the students and it shows.
TAKE THIS CLASS if you have even the slightest interest in criminal justice, or no interest at all. Prof Grunewald is hilarious, engaging, enthusiastic, and overall an incredible teacher. I learned more in soc 131 than any of my other classes. Tests can be difficult at times, but overall very fair. Favorite class/professor so far at Madison!
Prof. Grunewald was an awesome professor! You can tell how much he cares about making sure his students learn and are engaged in lecture. One of my favorite professors and while some of his exams were tricky, if you study hard they were fine. Very helpful during office hours, overall excellent instructor! Take his class!
Prof. Grunewald is a very fun and funny professor. He is able to keep everyone engaged while teaching the material. The tests are rather difficult, however, if you put in the time and the effort, you should be able to easily receive at least a B.
Grunewald is great and really cares about his students. TA's screwed over everyone this year and I hope he curves it because they were awful.
Professor Grunewald is slightly overrated in my opinion. Ok he's funny and stuff and cares about students, but he's EXTREMELY unclear in lectures. He really likes to walk around in lectures because he likes to call on people to answer questions, so be ware! His expectations for essays are not clear. So make sure you know what he wants beforehand.
Great professor! Loved everything about his class! Looked forward to his lectures and he made them fun and interesting! Easy class if you listen in lecture and do the readings! Wish I could take his class again!
He is a wonderful lecturer, and loves to call on random people. Don't be afraid though, he will take any answer, sometimes he gives them to you! KNOW the vocabulary from the book. Study everything, but especially the points he spends the most time on in lectures!
Great class. Knowledge very applicable to the real world for everyone not just legal studies majors. Tests were based off lecture, vocabulary words of the textbook (in the margins) and the articles he assigns. Sounds like a lot but it is manageable and interesting. I highly recommend this course to anyone with the slightest interest.
Ralph is awesome, he genuinely cares about you doing well in the class. complete all readings BEFORE lecture and you will be fine! Tests are tricky but if you read you should do well. There's always one essay question on the test, once you think you are prepared for it, prepare more... be SUPER DETAILED.
Although he is a tough grader, his lectures are always fun even though they're usually long. He always tries to connect with the students, even if his german background prevents him doing so. I'm very glad I got to have a class with him nonetheless.
Awesome professor. Lectures are long but very bearable. If you go to lecture, take notes, attend section, and read the required readings, you are at least guaranteed a B. The tests are pretty straight forward with no surprises on them. For essays, he gives you the possible prompts in advance. If I had the chance, I would love to have him again.
This guy is amazing. He keeps it interesting, has good stories, good slides, and a great sense of humor. You will enjoy him.
Good teacher, not an easy grader but he's fair. You must do the readings if you want to do good in this class.
Ralph is my favorite professor I've had at UW-Madison. His lectures are engaging and funny without trying too hard. Although his exams and papers are not easy, if you attend class and do the readings you will be just fine.
Really enjoyed the lectures. Grading seemed pretty harsh but that was mostly my TA.
This is a very interesting class! He takes attendance in lecture, and he puts a lot of lecture material on the exams. There is also a lot of assigned reading, and doing it will definitely help you for the exams. The essay questions on the exams can be tough, but he gives you two options ahead of time to look at and then only puts one on the exams.
Lecture attendance is taken every class, which is bad if you don't go to lectures, as you will fail. But honestly, I enjoyed going to his class more than any other class I have this semester. Professor Grunewald is funny and very personable. There is a lot of readings, but the class is interesting. It will be decent work, but I would take it again
After taking LS 131 wRalph, I decided to take another class with him; I made the right call! In 203, Ralph goes into detail about the legal system and law, integrating it wlit such as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Trial, and Shakespeare, as well as short stories. While there is a lot of reading, it is well explained in lecdisc. Engaging material.
AMAZING. Super engaging, clear expectations, great lectures. This class is super interesting and grunewald is super into it which makes it that much better. Love this class and would take another class by him again. Tests are easy if you do the reading (do the readings!). Articles aren't necessary to read but help tie things together.
Ralph is a very engaging professor. He cares about his students a lot. if you skip class a lot, don't take his classes. He takes attendance and fails you after 6 missed. But other than that lectures are very interesting, exams right from powerpoint which is available online, gives essays ahead of time. Multiple choice can be tricky, but not too bad
Ralph Grunewald is the BEST professor I've had so far at UW Madison! He is so friendly and approachable and he really cares about his students! He walks around during lecture and calls on people, which is really unique and refreshing to see! He is super nice and helpful and I loved this class!! Tests are easy as long as you attend lecture and read!
Ralph was an AMAZING professor! He was the nicest guy and extremely approachable. You can tell he really cares about his students. I got pretty sick during the year, and he was extremely understanding about it. His makes his lectures quite interesting, and I enjoyed them even though I am not going into criminal justice
Participation is 15% of your grade (YOU WILL MOST LIKELY GET CALLED ON) and attendance is mandatory (although 3 unexcused absences allowed before it affects your grade). No computers allowed for note taking, unless you sit in the first few rows. Textbook and reader (at copy center) are definitely recommended. Overall interesting course.
He is one of the funniest professors I have ever had! I always enjoyed going to lecture because I knew I was going to laugh. He also was really into the material, which came through in his teaching. He was very willing to help people because he just wanted people to understand the law!
He is very caring for his students. Made class interesting, however he is a very quick speaker so be ready to take quick notes. Really cool guy.
Ralph is one of my favorites! He keeps the lectures interesting, although they do get a bit long sometimes. He is very clear about what is going to be on the exams and what to study. The textbook readings are a must, but really only for the definitions on the side.
You're going to be assigned a lot of reading. Whether or not you actually read it is another matter. I didn't, and therefore didn't do all that well on the two exams. Papers saved me, though. Got a B.
I loved Ralph! His German accent is cute and not hard to understand at all. The tests are tricky, but if you rewrite the lecture slides and memorize the trend of the graphs you'll be fine! Lectures and discussions are mandatory and if you skip more than 6 you'll fail! But the material in this class is interesting and Prof. Grunewald teaches it well
There are a lot of readings assigned, but most are pretty interesting and it is possible to still do well on tests even if you miss a couple. Lectures are very interesting and Professor Grunewald is very funny! I would definitely take the class again. Attendance is mandatory, but you are allowed to miss 3 lectures without losing points.
Grunewald is a great professor and this is a great course. I'm not too interested in lit but I found this course very interesting. His accent is amazing.
A little tough to understand with accent at times, but you get used to it. Super funny and nice guy. Very fair tests, gives essay prompts in advance. Very knowledgeable and loves discussion during lecture. A ton of reading, but most of the test is from lecture slides which he posts, and he gives a lot of hints in class.
Easily one of my - if not most - favorite professors. He's a wonderful teacher that conveys the material incredibly well. His accent can be a little thick at times, but I found it a non-issue. He's really funny and always open to questions and encouraging on an academic level. I would definitely take this class any day.
Professor Grunewald is a great lecturer and makes the information really easy to understand. He engages with students even in a 400 person lecture hall and facilitates discussions to help explain the topics he covers. Highly recommend him.
Ralph is a great professor. His lectures are very interactive and engaging, so be prepared to be put on the spot in the middle of a 200-person lecture.
Interesting and positive person. Has accent but is a non-issue. Clear lectures if you are focused. It was hard to have 9:30am, 75 min lectures and stay awake. Tests were hard. He assigns very heavy reading list (an example is sometimes20 pgs of textbook along with 3+ articles). I found this hard to keep up. Takes attendance and calls on students.
Ralph is a great professor to have Freshman, or any year. Despite being in a 170-person lecture, he truly cares for each and every student, and cares about your feedback. Has an accent, but as others have said, it is a non-issue. Exams get easier as the year goes on, and final was rather easy. Class made me get a Criminal Justice certificate
Love this guy and really interesting class. Textbooks were helpful to me and he made the power lecture with videos and guest lecturers. Even if you aren't pre-law this is a great class. 10/10 DO RECOMMEND
Grunewald was a phenomenal professor. He knows the material very well. He is very respectable and has a super cute German accent. Tests were hard even if you studied. Read the book and pay attention to everything he says in class.
Ralph was amazing. His lectures kept the hour and a half moving fast and always had me engaged in the material. However, just because he is nice does not mean that this class is going to be easy. The quiz/final were easy, but the two midterms were really hard. Use your TA as a resource on working with the essay is my best piece of advice!
Super interesting, would highly recommend
You really have to study for his exams. They are straight out of the lectures and readings. Anything is fair game for exams. Theres 2 midterms and 1 final w/ 1 small quiz. These are your only grades besides 1 participation grade. Very detailed lectures but interesting topic.
Although it's a difficult class I haven't met a single person who hasn't raved about Grunewald. Make sure you use your resources for the tests, the study guides are golden and they take heavily from the readings. Defiantly a class I'd recommend everyone take.
Grunewald is a great teacher and although the homework is not graded, you definitely should do the reading as their are direct questions on the text about it but he does cover that content in class and posts his slides so that is very helpful.
Prof Grunewald was okay, but really what made the class manageable was my TA. The grading is very tough, and basically your whole grade is made up of 1 quiz, 2 midterms, and 1 final. And attendance/participation! He's a stickler about people participating, even in a class of 200+. Overall, a VERY tough class considering it was supposed to be intro.
Ralph is the best professor I've had here at UW Madison. Although his class is challenging and there's a lot of reading, it's really rewarding. If you take it seriously and do the assigned readings and actually go to class you will do very well.
Easily my favorite professor at UW- Madison. He makes the material very interesting and easy to listen to/study. Tests focus on lecture but the readings he assigns are extremely helpful (and honestly not boring)
Ralph is the best professor I've had. He makes all the material interesting and makes a point to try to learn students' names even in lecture. He truly cares about students and is very approachable.
Ralph is one of the best professors at UW. He is so funny and a great teacher. He has a German accent but it's very light and not a problem at all. Lectures are mandatory and he calls on people randomly so you need to pay attention. Great class and great professor!
Grunewald is a very good and hilarious lecturer. His accent is a plus, and he's always very willing to answer questions. However, he calls on people randomly even in a 250 person lecture, so you always have to be prepared. In addition, the class is graded on very few things and the essays are rather difficult and graded harshly.
Ralph was hands-down one of my favorite professors here at UW. He is incredibly knowledgeable about law and criminal justice, and teaches his material in a really interesting and engaging way. I took the class kind of for fun, but I recommend it to anyone looking for a soc credit. I still remember so much from this course, and I owe it all to him!
Prof. Grunewald rocks. His lectures are easy to follow and he won't put you to sleep. Reading is on the heavier side, but if you're interested in the topic, it's worth it. 10/10 would take his class again.
Prof. Grunewald is one of the best professors I've had at UW. He is really friendly, engaging, super funny, and very knowledgeable. Exams are a bit tough but fair, and he really cares about his students' success. Pay attention in class--he will call on you even in a 200-person lecture! Awesome professor.
Ralph is a really funny and interesting professor. He is always very willing to answer any question a student may have & keeps the class fast paced. However, there is A LOT of readings and it the class is based on very few things. Not very many people get an A in his class, but it is very rewarding regardless.
He's a really great prof who just wants to see his students succeed. Ralph does walk up and down the aisles/stairs to call on people and likes to know students' names. The material is not difficult to learn at all as long as you keep up with the readings and lecture. I didn't buy the the textbook and got a B but the book helps with multiple choice
Love Grunewald, is lectures were very engaging and he is so funny! You do have to read a lot and there are two essay tests which are graded very harshly. There are also quizzes, but they drop the lowest one. He randomly calls on people in lecture and is very energetic.
This class was great. I learned so so so much. Grunewald is inspiring and motivated. Only downside, lecture is 'mandatory.' You can def get an A w/o going, but you are only allowed to miss 3 which suuuckkks. Other than that, tests were pretty easy and quizzes can bump your grade up.
Enjoyed the first half of the class, but the second half became more abstract and about narratives in general. Loved when it simply focused on just novels and the legal components of them, everything was much more straight forward.
he's nice and funny but he assigns a ridiculous amount of reading. tests are hard and you really need to work hard to get a good grade. he is entertaining though
Ralph is a great teacher and a great person. You really need to read the textbook and do the readings, these will be on the tests. Make sure you go to discussion, this was very helpful. Lectures are easy to follow, and he does have an attendance sign in sheet. Would take this professor again.
Professor Grunwald is so hilarious and dedicated in teaching his classes. His brings personal and materialistic challenges to push you toward your limits. A couple papers and two exams. Study for the exams by reading the books and paying attention to lecture notes. Go to lecture or taking test and participating is difficult. The readings are fun.
Great teacher, always kept long lectures interesting. Made content understandable while adding humor into the mix. Takes attendance every class so you need to go!
Great guy with a genuine interest in teaching. Attendance is mandatory which sucks but his teaching style makes the class go by quick. Lots of reading but the text is interesting as it applies to everyday life. Overall interesting class with cool content and a cool professor.
Very knowledgeable and engaging. Lecture attendance is required, but you'll probably like going to them anyways. Sometimes the structure of lectures is a little shaky, but overall a good professor and a top tier class.
While the class is interesting, his lectures aren't the best. It's clear he's passionate about the class/topics we discuss, but he rambles a lot and gets off track which can be frustrating. Lectures usually drag on because of his tangents. Exams/quizzes are easy though, so as long as you show up and take notes, you'll be fine. TA's are helpful.
He is very passionate about the legal system and I really love the fact that he studied law in Germany. It is very interesting to compare the different systems of law and how other countries and the U.S. handle things. He is a really great prof and he is easy to talk to. This class is great because it applies to the real world too!
I really enjoyed this class, and it inspired me enroll in a similar class in the fall. Ralph is funny and enjoyable to listen to. The material isn't really hard, the only reason I rated the difficulty as high as I did is because the TA's graded the exams harshly, and I didn't like my TA. But the material is really interesting and Ralph is great.
A great professor. Very helpful and accommodating. I went through a lot during the semester I had him and he was always understanding and willing to help me. Strict professor in regards to academic honesty.
This man is an absolute gem. He's hilarious and wants to help you. However, there is A LOT of reading for this class, and it will be on the exam. Definitely more of a law class than sociology, but still really interesting. Always got almost a 100% on every multiple choice exam portion, but always did bad on the essays which are graded by TA's.
Ralph is the best and funniest prof I've ever had! He gives real-life examples to really make the info stick and values the opinions of all his students!!
Overall, I was disappointed in this class. Its really interesting, but for an entry level soc class, its hard. I felt like this class was like a first year law class. Also, sometimes there were questions on the MC that we didnt go through at all, so previous knowledge helps a lot. TAs are helpful, but you cant argue points back which stinks.
I really love this class, but you definitely have to put in work. It was very law-heavy, and seemed more like a first year law school course than an entry level course. Attendance is taken every lecture, but Ralph does a great job incorporating humor and interactive elements, some days it seems more like a large discussion section than a lecture.
Just an absolutely amazing professor. It's a lot of work and you're going to have to read a lot, but it's worth it. The exams are difficult, the class is difficult, but I do not regret taking the class at all. He's very engaging in the course material and you won't be bored. A great man.
Ralph is amazing as professor. I would take this class again just because of him. However, this class is listed as an elementary level course and that is so inaccurate. There was a lot of reading homework and so much material was covered. If you are really interested in pursuing law, then this is a good class for you. Everyone else., steer clear.
Professor Grunewald is my favorite professor of all time. Even if you're not planning on majoring in this, take the class!! By far the best decision I've made in college. He makes lectures go by so fast and is a joy to be around. As long as you read the book and take some time to study for exams you should be able to get at least a B
Dr Grunewald is a fantastic professor who is highly qualified for his job. His lectures are very enjoyable yet concise, filled with funny jokes and relatable stories. He is a tough grader, and his prompts for papers and projects are fairly open-ended so asking plenty of questions about what he wants from each paper/project is essential.
Grunewald is an amazing professor. He loves to get everyone involved during lecture and make it more fun and engaging. He cares about his students and loves to talk to people after class and during office hours. 10/10 would take his class again!
Prof Grunewald is by far the best professor I have ever had. His lectures are both informational and entertaining. A super cool guy and a great prof. Because of his class, I decided to pursue Legal Studies as a major, but would recommend to anyone, regardless of major.
Ralph is a good Professor, youre going to learn a lot from him and he makes lectures exciting. He is by far the toughest grader I have ever had, and he knows it. Prepare for a class that is fun, but extremely difficult. No chance of an A.
I looove Professor Grunewald. I was in the Imagining Crime FIG and he was the lead professor of it (take this FIG if you're a freshman!!!). We had to read a lot and he grades tough, but the class was really interesting and entertaining.
It is not every semester that you encounter professors as extraordinary and insightful as Professor Grunewald. Legal Studies/Sociology 131 is thought-provoking, eye-opening, and absolutely worth every minute. Lectures are engaging and tests are reflective of the material. Best, most satisfying class I've taken so far at UW-Madison.
Hands down one of the best professors UW-Madison has to offer. Professor Grunewald is caring, intelligent, compassionate and understanding. He truly cares that we succeed and he makes every class extremely engaging. I recommend everyone take this class even if they aren't pursuing legal studies because it is truly eye-opening.
I loved this class! Although these are power lectures, I never dreaded going to class as Professor Grunewald made the material so interesting. This class made me change my major!
Professor Grunewald is a great professor who focuses on engaging students in lecture and fostering passion for the legal system. He tells stories that are applicable to class concepts and creates hypotheticals that increase understanding. The course contains clear grading criteria, and exams are fairly straight forward. Be prepared to attend class.
I took this class because I was interested in learning more about the legal system, and Ralph does an amazing job at explaining tough concepts. His exams are hard, but the content covered is worth it. Power lectures were in depth, and be prepared to come, attendance is crucial.
This was my first semester of college, and Professor Grunewald was easily my favorite professor. The exams fairly analyzed what we knew, and the majority of the articles from the reader were super interesting. I read the textbook, but I know some people who didn't and were doing just fine, so it's up to you. Attendance is taken at lecture, so go!
He takes attendance during every single lecture so attendance is mandatory. As well ,the material that he presents during lecture is going to be on the midterms, especially the hypotheticals. Most people I know read the textbook as he takes out vocab and important key ideas from. He had really good TA's that made learning the material much easier.
I loved this class. I took it just because I thought it sounded interesting and it has truly changed my career outlook. I knew some people who struggled in the class, but I think as long as you go to lecture and do the readings you will do just fine. Ralph is incredible, he's very funny and wanders around while he lectures, but is a genius.
I was super excited to take this class after hearing good things, but with COVID moving such a dense course online, he only really managed to make the course harder on purpose and did not seem to care that the class was not doing well with an online environment
With this semester being online, there are a lot of unexpected challenges and adjustments that need to be made, and most of the time he seemed to completely ignore student inputs. Many people had issues with the difficulty of the class and the way that information was being delivered and the difficulty of the exams, but he changed almost nothing
Class is super interesting, he's passionate about the topic and really knows what he's talking about. That being said he's not adaptable to online learning, and he doesn't seem to care that his students are struggling greatly compared to past years. Nice enough guy, but doesn't have his students best interests in mind and can't teach online at all.
Grunewald is an amazing professor who is engaging with students and loves what he teaches. If he taught a class that was only offered at 5am on Fridays I would take it. Honestly the best professor I've had at UW-Madison.
This class had so much reading from the text and other materials for every class. Half of what is read is never talked about or mentioned again so its kind of pointless. He only focuses on certain readings. If you read anything, read the textbook because it is referenced in tests/quizzes.
DO NOT TAKE THIS ONLINE He's a fine professor, and speaking to him in person is wonderful. Online, he's awful. Lectures are unengaging and no resources at all. He had a tendency to blame students and assumed the worst of everybody. Absurdly high standards , no self-awareness or introspection. I think he struggles empathizing without seeing faces
Attend the optional synchronous meetings!! Professor Grunewald is very approachable and open to questions/feedback. Grading is straightforward but strict- no rounding or extra credit. In writing, he sounds stricter than he is 'in person'. He genuinely cares about his students. Lectures are asynchronous but interesting. ATTEND THE HANGOUTS.
I had the pleasure of taking Professor Grunewald's classes in person and his lectures were some of the best lectures I have ever attended here at UW Madison. You definitely will have to put some work in before the exams, but this class is one of the most interesting classes I've taken so far. It's a must take for me!
This is the best course I've taken at UW. Dr. Grunewald is an amazing professor, and the class is engaging and interesting. It's definitely one you have to work for, but it's totally worth it. A little depressing at times because it feels like you're informed about all the issues but there's no clear path forward. Everyone should take this class.
he is a terrible professor refused to give extra credits and don't wana curve. Definately avoid taking unless you want a certificate.
I personally loved taking Professor Grunewald's class because of how interesting he makes it. It is obvious that he is passionate about the content and loves to see his students succeed. Tests and quizzes are difficult but the content is very interesting , so it isn't too grueling when you have to study.
This was one of my least favorite classes and I was stressed about my grade all semester even though I was putting in tons of work. The lectures were extremely boring and difficult to get through. I've heard good things about this professor, but I wouldn't take his classes online. Not enough time was given for multiple choice parts of exams.
I really enjoyed taking this class with Ralph even though it wasn't easy by any means. The essay portions of the exams were graded very specifically without communicating the grading criteria to students. However, I definitely recommend this class for anyone interested in the legal/criminal justice field as it was super interesting!
This was a great class that inspired me to pursue a degree in Legal Studies/Criminal Justice. I managed to get a good grade but really had to work for it. You will struggle if you don't do the readings or if you take poor notes.
Professor Grunewald was my favorite professor I've had by far. He truly cares about his students and is a great teacher. SOC131 is not an easy class, but he makes it enjoyable. There is a lot of reading and the lectures are long. He does a good job at preparing you for exams and they are open note. If you put work in, you will succeed.
Professor Grunewald is an overall amazing professor. He has done many great things in his career and life, and it is quite an honor to have him teaching you. Take advantage of this. You will have to read a lot and really work for your grade, but it is well worth it. Manage your time, get your readings done, attend lecture, and make use of hangouts!
The online version of this class was hard, it only consisted of quizzes and exams which were fairly tough since questions are so specific to certain examples in a lecture or reading. Some questions deal with other countries criminal justice systems which was honestly confusing in relation to the class. Made me forget pursuing criminal justice
This is a wonderful class & I think he's fixed up a lot of the problems he seems to have had online in the fall. The grading does seem a little tough, but it's an interesting class for any major. I'm already planning a legal studies major but I've heard many people cite Prof Grunewald as the reason they went into legal studies or criminal justice.
Ralph is a pretty solid professor. You can tell he cares about what he's teaching when you listen to the lectures. There's no extra credit or grade curve, so do your best during the semester. The only grades in the gradebook are weekly reading/lecture quizzes and unit exams. It's a pretty standard class; I didn't have any issues with Ralph.
Great guy with a lot of passion for what he does- and it shows. You need to put in the work to get a good grade but if you have a general enjoyment for criminal justice/ social issue you will like the work. He put in extra effort to connect with students online so I can only imagine he is better is person. The TA's grade tough.
He is tough on students
Lectures are super interesting and you have to pay attention because most test and quiz questions are on the things he talks about in lecture.
Fantastic teacher, but hes a tough grader who assigns hella reading. His essay prompts are vague but if you contact him, hes more than happy to meet, help, give feedback, etc. You MUST show up to class, but hes very engaging so I rarely get bored during that class. Certainly difficult, but Im SO glad I took it and would take it again instantly.
Prof Grunewald is an amazing professor. His lectures are very engaging and he is extremely passionate about the material. The class is difficult if you are not interested in the criminal justice system because your grade is based only on three exams throughout the semester along with the final exam. I wish I could take another class with him.
Take his FIG!! Best decision I made freshman year. Small class size helped us get to know him and learn more. When I made mistakes, he was approachable and helped me solve the problem. There are three papers and one presentation, and the writing fellows are helpful, so long as you don't write the paper the night before. Great discussions in class.
Take this no matter what your major is. His lectures are so engaging. He's hilarious and is very passionate about the subject because he used to be an attorney. Definitely go to lectures because he explains things better so they make sense. Do the readings because the tests will reference them.
He is truly passionate about being a law professor. He cares for every single one of his students and makes class really enjoyable, no matter how boring the subject. I specifically took another class just because he was teaching it- I am not even interested in English! He truly is the best professor I have ever had.
Professor Grunewald is a solid professor, but there are a few main flaws to his class. 1. The grading rubrics are incredibly specific for writing sections on exams. His TA's grade this incredibly tough. 2. Weekly quizzes are incredibly lecture-based, but there are many questions worded very ambiguously. Overall hard for me to recommend.
prof grunewald was very engaging in lectures and i would definitely recommend this class to anyone! exams were pretty intense, especially the writing. hopefully in the future he provides more structure about what is expected on written exams. attendance isn't required but he speaks off the slides so much it's important to go.
Very good professor but was a hard class.
I had a great experience it is definitely work but if you're even a bit consistent you're chilling
super nice man
He makes lectures very fun.
Great professor, very enthusiastic about law.
Professor Grunewald's SOC131 class is engaging and informative, though the exams can be challenging. Attend lectures, do the readings, and utilize resources like Unstuck AI to succeed. It's a worthwhile course, even if not an easy A.
Although exams were challenging, I genuinely feel like I learned so much from this class. As long as you attend lectures, do the readings and weekly quizzes (which weren't as bad as I thought they'd be), and attend TA review sessions you'll do fine.
He's a super funny guy you can tell he enjoys teaching. It might not seem like you need to be at lecture, but some quiz questions are based off of lecture. Lots of reading from the textbook if you actually do it but would most likely be fine not reading it. Exams can be a little tricky but if you justify your answer well, you'll be fine.
Hands down the best professor i've had all semester. He is one of the few who makes lecture enjoyable and is very easy to follow what is happening. He is very helpful outside of class through his office and is overall a friendly guy. The exams themselves aren't extremely difficult if you show up to lectures.
You definitely have to go to class to understand the material, but lecture was always super engaging. He cold calls people so get ready for that. Test questions were basically given in advance so if you study you can do well. A lot of material but super straightforward and ralph does amazing at making things understandable.
The lectures were engaging and had interesting topics. However, he rarely covered all of the material in each lecture and did not post the slides before class. The quizzes and exams were regraded frequently because of poorly written questions. The grading criteria of the exam essays were unclear, and expectations were not outlined.
I had such a hard time in this class, and I tried so, so hard. I heard such great things about him and I thought I was doing well until the exam grades came back and I felt like I might has well have not studied at all. He's a funny guy and really nice, but the lectures and what he's talking about in class are so hard to take notes on for quizzes.
Very kind professor, enjoyed talking to him about many things including outside hobbies, midterm and final was very fair and set up for success.
Ralph is a very fun prof who presents the material in an engaging way. However, the multiple choice exams felt unnecessarily hard and like they were written with the intention to trick you. That may be helpful for some people to learn the material, but to me it just seemed a bit harsh for an intro level course.
I will be graduating this spring at the top of my class -- 3.93 GPA -- with honors in Lgl St. and Spanish. I remember 131 with Dr. Grunewald very well. Be aware that Dr. Grunewald curves this course at a B or lower (check Madgrades for reference), meaning that how well you understand the course material is, more or less, immaterial. STAY AWAY.
Extremely fast talker, very lecture heavy. The way he grade written responses are very harsh.
Prof. Grunewald is one of my favorites. He holds high expectations for his students, and he isn't afraid to tell you when you've missed the mark. However, his direct style of delivering feedback is nothing to get upset about. You'll leave his class a better writer if you don't let it get under your skin (remember, he wants the best for you)!
His accent is a bit hard to understand. He switches back and forth between slides so it is hard to take notes and when he is explaining the slide it's sometimes on a tangent that doesn't end up making sense. It was an interesting class but I just wish the professor slowed down a bit and really explained the concepts without going on tangents.
Grunewald is truly an amazing professor and he can answer almost any question you ask. He does pop up attendance quizzes in lecture every once in a while so I would recommend going. He switches through slides very fast but will post the ones he's using beforehand in order to keep up. He is a MENACE with cold calls though.
Professor Grunewald is an absolutely amazing lecturer. His quizzes and exams are definitely specific to things he says in lecture, so you have to go, but the lectures are very engaging.
