Ralph is a great choir teacher. Some people say he is too harsh but the fact is that he really cares and wants the choir to do well, which means follow his directions the first time, not after he's said it ten times. I took the online MUFHL300 over the summer. I think I got an A because I was consistent in asking questions about the material, did the EX CR, wrote enthusiastic papers & greatly participated in the 1 discussion. I was nervous because Music is a lower intelligence of mine and didn't do Great on the listening tests, but this class was manageable.

I was in the online class for four days. I dropped his class. He does not know how to use The Canvas Online website like other professors that offer online courses. Most of his class is given on another online page and blogging music rants on his discussion boards is how he grades. His email directions where brash.

Doctor Hughes is an excellent professor. This class exposes you to a lot of different music that you probably would not be if you didn't take it. The quizzes are easy. There is a lot of reading. 2 or 3 concert reports are mandatory as a large part of the grade. He is accommodating/understanding. He is interested in and cares about you.

I have sung in Ralphs choirs for many years. Its been one of the greatest joys of my life. I will miss it immensely. I would recommend it to anyone who loves singing & wants to experience a community of people dedicated to sharing the beauty of choral music. This is not a class where what you do affects only you. He cares and wants you to care!

Professor Hughes is a great professor. I took this class to fulfill my electives and realized I really love classical music and choir. He makes you go to two concerts during the semester and at first I thought it would be hard but it was amazing. I even had my friends and family join because of his class we all have found appreciation for music.

This professor should be ousted from teaching. My daughter is an accomplished pianist and passed his class but hated it. I have heard from her and other students that he yells at his students, demeans them and even goes so far as to cause more sensitive students to cry. There is no place for someone like this bully in our schools. Avoid him.

i loved choir in high school and taking his beginning choir class made me hate it. he made several of my friends cry, and many people dropped the class. i would have too if i didn't have a minimum unit requirement. doesn't teach the music in class and expects people to learn the music on their own time, even if they have never been in choir before.

Took this class online, the assignment schedule was a tad confusing to understand when things were due. Pretty easy class. Work smarter and not harder. Try to remember all the songs on the practice tests, ALL the wording of the questions. You'll be able to remember/know every answer to the actual quizzes that way.

I took this course online for Summer and I actually enjoyed! You get what you give, so don't be surprised if you get a bad grade because you were lazy to work. He used a cool website to run the course and everything was self explanatory. He was very nice and caring too if you had questions about anything & also extended some deadlines for work :-)

Uncaring, talks about himself a lot. Doesn't get to know people unless he wants to and they are similar to him and his taste for people. His conducting? Unclear and messy, but also horribly inconsistent with simple beat patterns. He's been known to yell at students and isn't a genuine nor inspirational music teacher because he yells at you to smile

I truly wish I had something nice to say about ralph, yet I do not. During the pandemic when everything is online he refused to email me back, he never answers anything and if he does its just one word. The only reason I gotten a B+ was because he doesn't put due dates on assignments. FIND ANOTHER MORE QUALIFIED PROFESSOR

Professor Hughes produces a good sounding choir, but he isnt very nice. He has a bit of a temper. I dropped his class because he made me cry, and reminded me of my abusive dad in childhood. He could be nice sometimes, but he is bad at remembering names.

Dr. Hughes created several ongoing projects for his school choirs. His advanced group, Chamber Singers, had about 7-8 different vocal assignments for his singers to complete by specified due dates. This department has not produced a single choral event virtually since the shutdown of schools, and the finished projects are scarce. It's humiliating.

Great professor. It's basically just theory and learning a lot of interesting stuff about some great composers. Hardest part was being able to listen/distinguish different tunes. Could be a bit dull at times. Got to attend the Chamber Singers and Concert Choir performance and I loved it. Quite a bit of reading.
