Jenne is a great intructor, very helpful, and easy to talk to. The subject matter is very hard but he really wants everybody to understand the material. Do your homework every night. He gives out a handout before each test as homework to help you study for each test. Four tests and a final. He gives out one handout for extra credit.
Ralph was very friendly, very easy to understand, and very willing to adjust the speed of his teaching to the needs of the class. His homework was fairly easy, and I really liked his teaching style. He is VERY laid back and easygoing, and grades fairly easy if you do all the work. He gives 5 tests & a Final, and drops the lowest test.

he was the worst teacher i have ever had in my entire life. never ever take him unless u like to have a bad grade on ur transcript. if u want to reach him he will never answer ur email.
Until Ralph's class I had a 4.0 in every math class. He doesn't follow the book at all, yet assigns homework from it, he gets angry when students are late or leave early and he was late every day. He moves through material really quickly and only has one way of explaining material. He is a horrible teacher.
The hmk from the book will not prepare you well for exams, but Jenne has a website where he has posted old exams. His exams will be similiar just different #'s. Practice these over & over and you will do well in the class. He is laid back unless your cell phone rings in his presence - it really upsets him! Not welcoming @ his office for questions
jenne is a nice person... generally he answers all your questions and explain it really clear. DON'T BUY THE BOOK...you will never use it. study his previous test the day before the exam and you'll be fine. he won't give you anything new.
He is really good at explaining everything and he loves answering questions, He has a great since of humor and always makes jokes about everything. He is extreamly knowlagable about the subject material and he s one of the easyest math teachers I have ever had to follow him along in his lectures, If you like math you will like him!
Unlike the previous comment. I think he is sloppy at teaching, but not at grading. I rather wish he was sloppy at grading but not at teaching. He don't prepare the lectures very well, coming up with examples at the last minute that don't even help with the hwrk.
He is an ok teacher, HW grades are good if you do most of the problems. Tests are hard but short, and graded loosly. Lectures are sometimes off track, but with the book it's ok. Has a sense of humor, grins throughout the period.
I did well in the things i had learned BEFORE taking him, but the things i already knew i was kind of confused on after he talked about it.
good teacher, tests can be tough, sometimes examples don't really relate to the material (not alot though), I recommend this teacher but you'll definetly have to put forth an effort.
He is a great teacher! He has a subtle wit that keeps the class laughing while learning calculus! He posts archived tests, if you can master these you will master the class! Always willing to help and devotes a lot of class time to homework questions and archived test questions to prepare for exams.
Favorite teacher ever. I still hate math but can understand it now. An asset to north
Hilarious teacher. Makes you laugh while learning math. He knows the subject well and expects you to study a great deal on your own. Exams and homework are tough.
Really nice and funny but grades really tough and old tests that he has us study are partly helpful then he makes it tough and different types of q. I wouldnt reccomend if math is tough for you.
Nice guy and good sense of humor, but doesn't respond to emails and often arrived late to class then let the class out 30 min early. He had us take two tests on the day of finals because he claimed that there wasn't enough time in the schedule to spread out the tests. Hmm..30 min x 2 days/wk= 1 hr x 10= 10 hrs of class time wasted.
nice guy, good teacher. but extremely hard tests. plus take home tests. people spend 20-40 hrs on this take home tests and still struggled with in class test. i got a 4.0 in 124, this one i stuggled.
I thought he was the best math prof at NSCC. Helpful, fun and interesting. When i attended of course...
avoid at all cost
very picky on test corrections. even if you are understanding the material decently, i got a D on a test i thought would be a B. i understood the material but was marked harshly and oftenly for small errors (forgot - or + sign). really got on my nerves. also, the tests contain hard problems that werent exampled or taught in the hw or class.
The thing that bothered me the most about Ralph was that he never said anything about attendance being mandatory for class, but if you didn't go he'd grade your tests down. Once I stopped coming to class and started learning out of the book I did much better on the tests, but got a worse grade. No hw+all tests is not a good way for me to learn.
The test are way too hard, considering that we never do those hard problems on the homework or in class. He's a nice guy, but his teaching and grading system definitely needs to be changed.
Boring...
Great prof if you always show up, and do the hw. You will most likely be lost otherwise. He has a great teaching style that is organized and starts with the basics of each topic. Then, his class examples put everything into context what you've learned. I took him for 116 and 117. Great class. One of my favorites at North.
Ralph Jenne is a mathemagician and he carries with him a magical wand which he uses frequently to summon corny one-liners during his lectures. He assigned us no homework at all, and all of the points we earned were from 3 tests and a final, which is brutal. His charisma and charm are disguises for his sadistic grading style. I highly recommend him.
I think he is a great teacher who is very helpful. He is willing to work with you if you need it.
Very good teacher. Sometimes He chooses an angle that is a bit more complicated than others (ie: teaching trig starting from triangles instead of circles) but overall very helpful and nice. Grading system is good, depends on the tests. Fair in my opinion.
His test are extremely hard, it has nothing to do with the material he teaches. Is very helpful but only goes over a new material during the last 15 mins of class yet expects us to know everything by the next day. The hw exercise problems issued were no help, and even the people at the math lab agreed his hw wksht passed out were difficult.
I really liked the class structure - 3 mid terms, 1 cumulative final and like 3 hw handouts. He has old exams and solutions posted online so you know what to expect. He also proved to be willing to work with students.
Ralph is a very good teacher but he has an extremely hard class. There is almost no homework and your grade depends on 5 tests. I still learned a lot but i got a 3.5. I would not recommend him if your GPA is important to you.
Favorite teacher ever. He is very helpful and fun. Very little homework and grade depends on 5tests. Highly recommend...
Ralph is a nice guy, but his class is horrible. He is what you would think of as a typical math professor. His tests are REALLY hard and he does not explain things well and is horrible reviewing for tests.
Hard Class. Your grade depends on two tests and your final. Thats it.
Jenne moves too quickly thru material whether student understands it or not. He needs to slow down, explain concepts in more ways than one, and then ask questions. His tests were hard and does not prepare students appropriately for his tests. He needs to test kids on what he teaches them, rather than trying to trick them.
Very nice teacher. He's often late to class though. He explains things well and gives fun facts about math. Your grades depends completely on your quizzes and test but he goes over everything in class so there's nothing surprising at all. Great teacher :)
Ridiculously hard. I had an A in every math class prior to this one, and in this class I'll be lucky to get a C. Rushes through material and doesn't always explain things clearly. The homework problems are nothing like the ones you'll see on the tests. Just avoid. Avoid. Avoid.
I think he is really Fair. He will help you if you have any question, and he will review all stuff before test. You will get good score if you study hard.
WOW. He cant teach!! He makes everything harder than it has to be. You get MORE confused than you were before. Just use the book to learn the material and him for extra questions.
I was dreading taking math again after 11 years since College Algebra, but he makes the class fun and interesting. Kindof a goofy guy, makes a lot of jokes, which really helps get through a 2.5 hour evening class. More than fair grading scale and gives great explanations as well as being very available for office hours extra help. Highly recommend!
He was a nice enough guy, but his teaching technique left much to be desired.
Ralph is a great teacher that makes a somewhat dull subject remarkably entertaining. He is the king of corny one-liner comedy and will constantly have you chuckling. Tests are fair and follow the homework recommendations from the text. Relaxed, laid back class, and great for those who prefer to study on their own. Highly recommended.
Ralph is full of humor and is a great prof. A changing work schedule caused me to miss a majority of the classes at night except for test nights and I regret not being able to experience more of his lectures. Self studying linear just wasn't as fun as being in class with him and his witty jokes. Highly recommended!
Somewhat decent at lectures in the classroom; sometimes has a very sarcastic/cynical tone. Tests are reasonable. Don't expect him to answer an email for help. Take linear with Jasso imo, much more helpful/caring prof.
If you're confident enough with your math skill, take his class, if not, prefer another instructor like Jasso or Hon Li.
Two thumbs up. Jugding by the completeness of his answers/explanations, Mister Jenne's level of expertise is very high. Good sense of humor. Grade based on quizzes/tests only, and no curve, which may be rough. If you like math, great teacher. If you don't, dunno... lots of comments below about his being unclear/etc, but I didn't get that at all.
Ralph is a very understanding and fair instructor. Not only does he know his stuff...but he's also funny and engaging. He will go over as many HW problems that students ask of him. Ralph helped me out when I was struggling, I will never forget him. If your generally good in math I urge you to take Ralph Jenne...
He's not as awesome as Hon Li, but it was still a great class. The lectures are pretty interesting, at least for Diff EQ, and he's good about answering people questions.
Ralph is a helpful teacher, and he kept the lectures interesting (or attempts to keep them interesting). I couldn't take notes fast enough to keep up with him at times. He would sometimes make simplifications on the fly that made it unclear as to what he had done, but that was not often. He was very willing to do many sample problems.
He's a really good professor. He explains the materials clearly and he will go through some homework problems. His quizzes and tests are easy n he has a good sense of humor too. Take his class!
Great teacher! Easygoing, friendly, helpful and smart!
I thought Ralph was a great teacher. I have heard others at school complain about his methods(too fast, not cohesive) but the pattern was that those people really had a hard time understanding math. If you have a fairly decent grasp of math and do not need your hand held, then take his class. He makes it pretty entertaining too!
I agree that his method of teaching is kinda fast, but with prior knowledge of calculus u do not really need to comprehend everything he says in math 151.he doesnt need u to pass up hw,but DO!and treat it as exercise!REALLY CONSIDERATE,FRIENDLY,funny and always willing to answer ur questions.Take his class if uve studied calculus before, get ur 4.0!
nice guy and, corny funny. i have taken calculus before and am familiar, but i feel sorry for the students who have not. if i had not taken calculus previously, i could have just thrown my money away rather than pay him to "teach". expect tests to be inapproiate length and loosly related class examples.
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. Makes it easy to understand complicated items. One tip - DO THE HOMEWORK (even if it isn't mandatory, it only helps you)
Take at your own risk ^^
This teacher was ok, but very hard in my opinion. Most of the time, he assume that you know the materials and you know what he is talking about. He goes way too fast on the topic and his test is very complicated. many students didnt have the time to finish it and half of the class dropped out after the 1st test. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM!
I've had this teacher a couple of times. For one, his use of the white board is poor. Often he stands directly in front of the board while he writes, and then erases what he wrote before I could copy everything down. His use of the board is very sloppy in general, and makes for poor note taking. Despite the flaws, he's okay teaching. Funny too.
RUN don't walk away from this teacher. I love math, I always have until this class. He acts as if you already know what he's talking about. The tests are way too long and confusing. He doesn't try to help drill things into your head. It's all about solving homework Q's and a 20 min lesson. He focuses on small things never test related. WHAT A JOKE
He's not that hard of a professor. He doesn't require his homework and it's just up to you to keep up. He's actually quite clear in class, and responds to questions well. He does move fast, but I think that's the structuring of quarter system, not the class itself. Willing and going to take his Math 141 class.
Took directly after calc3. The course was very disorganized; open source textbook from MIT showed very few examples. 4 homework assignments took about 15 hrs to complete each. 2 tests, plus final, are hard with little relevance to review sheet, not enough time to complete. No clear lesson plan, no previous course sample tests. vague and ambiguous
Ralph was great! I took this as my college level math requirement. This one quarter of math made more sense to me than three quarters of remedial algebra ever did! Math 107 has real world application, so I suppose that was why I understood it. Ralph is kind, patient, and will go over material until the class gets it. I recommended him!
He's a really nice guy--funny too. But the course is disorganized and he teaches from the top his head. You'll understand the stuff that he does teach, but you'll definitely have gaps in knowledge. I ended up using open source sites and videos to get me through numerical analysis. His tests are easy though.
Ralph helps students a lot. If you have any questions about math from algebra to a complicated calculus, he is glad to help you. However, his teaching style sometimes is boring. But, overall, this class is great for me.
The MIT book was pretty unhelpful-- assigned problems weren't always relevant or helpful in completing the take home assignments. I would suggest watching the lectures from MIT as they are more organized and helpful than his actual lecture. There was not much organization to his lectures, needed outside study to do well.
excellent instructor. Very funny during lectures (if you listen - dry sense of humor) and I never once saw him act annoyed by questions (even when I was sometimes annoyed that students were asking him to repeat info). He is approachable and kind and smart. I hope to take another math class from him in the future.
Ralph is nice and smart but lectures are difficult to follow. Seems to come to class wo a lecture for the day and just kind of wings it. Homework is tough to the point where getting help from tutoring center doesnt exist and online resources are nothing like homework. If you can self teach go for it, if you need a professor then look elsewhere
He came in and sort of rambled through lectures, but he seemed to cover everything necessary to pass his class. The tests and assignments were pretty easy, although sometimes they could have been more clear. Very nice guy and was always willing to help anyone through their issues.
He's a really nice guy. However, it was supremely hard to keep up with him since he's so knowledgable in the subject. He wings most of his lectures and rambles on and on. Harsh grader. I had to watch videos in order to pass this class. If you're able to keep up with his lectures and self-study, you might be able to pass. Other than that, avoid.
Ralph is a good guy, and worst MATH teacher that I've done with in NSCC. He needs to take course about teaching skills. He's making blackboard messy, and that makes me to hate a math because it's confused me how to start to write my note. During explanation, I do not feel that i get the idea, i feel he is explaining to his self.
I took two courses with Jenne.R (MATH220 & MATH 146). I felt that these course was great. I learned a lot. I would definitely suggest others take from him. He knows the subject matter very well, explained very well, is very enthusiastic about teaching, cares about students progress, and willing to explain problems and provide applicable examples.
Ralph Jenne was an amazing teacher. I learned from him. His notes tend to messy but if you can sit in the front and actively engage, you are good.
This is the worst math class I have ever taken. He gives you one worksheet as mandatory homework but doesn't explain or do similar problems in class, and to make matters worse he tries to trick you on problems. He assigns extra problems from the text that aren't graded or turned in but they really don't help with the required HW.
Don't waste your time. He is a poor excuse for a teacher, actually I wouldn't even call him a teacher. I would have been better off taking this class online. He doesn't tell you what you need to memorize or how to apply what you've learned in order to complete the homework. I can honestly say he is the worst teacher I have ever had
He is an amazing teacher if you are willing to study hard. He has very solid knowledge. He can help you outside the class by explaining thing that you are stuck on. One thing that I wanna complain is his hand writing is so bad so you should sit in the front row. His exam is based on his lecture.
One of the best teacher I have had.
Great teacher in my opinion. As others have stated, he isn't very organized with his lesson plan; however, everything he quizzes and tests you on is based on the assigned homework (which is also assigned in reasonable amounts and is not overwhelming). He'll answer any questions in class and does a pretty good job with his examples and explanations
Very good teacher. Doesn't give a ton of homework and his test and quizzes come directly from the homework. Don't miss any classes however because the class is a little fast paced. Also very hilarious his anecdotes have had me in stitches a few times.
The homework is custom made by Ralph, and did an excellent job of showing me where I was strong or weak on the material. I never had a test result that was a surprise to me. I also found him to be very helpful during office visits as he is very capable of explaining a concept in more than one way, which allows him to teach to my learning style.
ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT!!!!! Also the homework is hard! But Test less so. DO the optional homework and you'll do very well in this class.
Mr. Jenne is an okay guy, but he isn't the best at teaching stats. I know stats is hard, but it shouldn't be this hard. Jenne doesn't plan his classes or curriculum well (if at all) and can be very vague at times. I have no doubt he knows what he's talking about. However, he needs to communicate more clearly and add structure to the course.
I LOVE him. He's the math person for people who suck at math.
It's not easy to get a 4.0 in his class because he never gives us chances for extra credits. But I have to say he is a good teacher. He explains topics with lots of sample problems, which are very similar with the problem in homework and quiz.
He is one of the best math teachers I had, and by far he is. I had him for Math 141 and he didn't use the book, but he showed the class many examples and with good detail. He is funny all through class, so its always a fun class to go to.
minimal hw (but content is a good indicator of what will be on the test/quiz), tests are totally manageable if you show up every day. He has his own website instead of canvas, and labels something as "book homework" in his syllabus that should be labeled "optional practice problems" because that's what they are. Just do the hw he passes out.
TOUGH GRADER!!!!!!
Ralph is a fantastic teacher; he is very knowledgeable and passionate about math. He encourages students to think out of the box and gives challenging homework which you can get help with. His tests are very easy, if and only if, you do the assigned homework which are very few. I highly recommend him, especially for engineering students.
He will always give ugly number to you guys to be confuse. He has really bad habit.
My favorite math teacher at NS. -Allows calculator -De-emphasises memorization -Emphasiszes application He has two kinds of HW, graded and ungraded. His ungraded HW is his greatest strength. Well chosen exercises practically teach themselves, very helpful. Graded HW and tests emphasize theory and application. Do the ungraded HW!
I think Ralph is an okay teacher. You should really pay attention in class and process the information. Since I daydream in class a lot, I only understand him because I took the same course before. It is okay to take him for pre-calculus classes but I would not take him for Math 152 or 163
I will recommend this class to all those who's passionate in math. I had a lot of fun discussing math-related topics to Ralph in his office and as someone who loves math, he can be very inspirational. I cannot say much for those who do not share this, though. The theme of math advice is the same: don't memorize, visualize. Especially in this class.
Ralph is amazing, he is kind of quirky and some people don't like him because of that but if you already have a passion for math he is a great teacher! In his calculus lectures he brings in a lot of physics and expects a certain level of physics understanding but if you have taken a basic physics class you should be ok.
His tests are not tricky bc they based on what given in the hw. Didn't required the use of textbook in class, but make sure you read the section beforehand in order to understand what he'll say. The only thing I don't like is that he has a different grading system from Canvas so you'll never know your current percentage until the end of the quarter
I really did NOT enjoy this class. He is a very knowledgable person about math. However, he is teaching this class like he is teaching PhD students. He assumes you already know all the concepts he is teaching. I don't recommend this class if you are not a math genius. He does problems but won't tell you the steps along the way.
Prepare to teach yourself most of the material, if you learn by example only this is the class for you! Nothing is explained well and a lot of skipped steps make lectures hard to follow. This class is test heavy and not graded on a curve.
This instructor expected students to be familiar with the subject upon arrival and throughout the quarter - treating it like a cursory review of material instead of first-time exposure. He doesn't connect with students in a way they can understand. Lectures and white/black board instruction were confusing and contained many mistakes. Disheartening.
non accessible AP style teacher, his idea on math should be supplemental teaching to students who have complete the courses, and no not a single HW assignment nor Test question is from the book or the lesson. They are full of curve balls which you can spot, if you spent the time it takes to be fluent in this course prior to taking it
Ralph's class should be its own prerequisite. Weekly graded homework was extremely difficult and left little time for the "recommended" practice problems, which his lectures don't prepare you for anyway. I should have received a C but for cancellation of the final and a last minute glut of extra credit. Class was a disservice to students who care.
Lectures were SO boring. Mumbled most of the time, weird pacing, and easily got off-track. Canvas was never used. Didn't post grades on Canvas and expected you to kept track of your scores yourself. Don't take unless you're good at Math on your own!
Took online Calc 1 and was stunned at the volume of homework on an avergae day(around 3 assignments.) Video lectures were bland, hard to understand and didnt provide a good way to learn and the professor took a long time to respond to emails. Very poor teacher for online learning, he probably is not well adapted to it. Test heavy, bad learning.
All assignments are published up front so you can work at your own pace (there are due dates, though, but you have the ability to progress ahead of the class). Tests are challenging but not unfair - show your work to receive partial credit on questions you can't completely answer. Also had them for 141. Prepare to work and expect to learn.
I have been enjoying the online learning during the Covid crisis, I feel that this Teacher did not have enough resources that explained his work. I passed the class but I felt I would have done better if his notes and lecture videos had an order/ organization. But the overall problem I had with this teacher was his inability to communicate online
This man had his syllabus in all lowercase letters!!!!! Never responded to emails properly, had me waiting for a grade a week later Very unprofessional with his lecture videos, mumbled and skipped steps The TEXTBOOK is useless it does not match ANY of his test/homework assignments Organization does not exist with this Teacher
Tests never come from quizzes and homework. Very difficult and profound problems turn out to be big tests. It won't be easy to get grades.
He did not teach anything. Tests he created were nothing like the homework and quizzes assigned through webassign. It seemed like he had no idea what the homework and quizzes consisted of. Not easy to get a response outside of class. I would not recommend this teacher or ever take one of his classes again. He had very high expectations for students
Professor Jenne is such a great teacher. He's always willing to answer any of your questions. He always gives extensions if you did not have the chance to finish the homework on time. He's very knowledgeable about precalculus. He also teaches the class with lots of examples, so you are ready for the exam. Pretty good teacher 10/10
Ralph is a good professor if you can learn a lot from him talking at you for the whole class. If not, then it'll be a bust for you. Non-immersive at all, mumbles a lot, writes fast so you have to be a quick note-taker to get everything down if that's your learning style.
Ralph is a fantastic professor with a genuine love for math. Hope to take another class with him. Workload was manageable and tests were tough but fair.
It's my first time studying in an American college, and Mr. Ralph has always been a great person to work with. Although my grades aren't that good, he is a great guy in his lectures, and I hope that everyone in his class takes it seriously. The workload is not that much, but the tests are very heavy. Good luck!
