Goes slightly fast. very honest with students. knows his stuff. Don't ask for a study guide, just take good notes and review the stuff he puts on blackboard
Goes pretty fast, puts all powerpoint slides on internet, plays very boring videos, DONT ASK FOR A STUDYGUIDE, will allow you to come to his office and helps some but not enough i dont believe, cant miss more than 3 classes or 5% gets taken off of grade, teaches alot of info for test, all multiple choice tests..overal lits pretty difficult class
Tests are different from lectures
He is very smart and knows his stuff. He just has a problem conveying the material.
Not helpful at all when I met with him to discuss my grades...and not helpful when I asked if there was any other way for me to study for his test.
This course was pretty easy. All slides are posted on Blackboard after class. Just follow along with his lectures and take notes and you should have no problems. He does require that you come to class and sit in assigned seats. But if you came to Auburn for an education, this should not be an inconvenience.
EASY!!! If you came to college to learn, you should have no problem. How hard is studying notes/learning material covered in class. Hot in a nerdy kind of way. Very sarcastic, funny if you get it. All tests were multiple choice. WANTS you to pass, even changed the weight of tests so that slackers could pass. Overall nice guy!!
his lectures come from the textbook, or straight from wikipedia. he posts them online after class, so go over all of them before the test, because he doesn't give/do reviews. but if you go back over his lectures and look up the major points on wikipedia it's an easy A. his TA's take roll every single class.
I love him!! he is so funny and just a cute guy....his class is not hard at all as long as you look over the slides before the test and review the textbook a little bit!
He knows what he's talking about. Don't be intimidated by the tone of his syllabus, he isn't that harsh. He's pretty funny, and while history is boring, it isn't his fault you want to fall asleep in class. Theattendance bonus could potentially be helpful. Tests are extremely easy, I never took notes,I just learned it well enough through his lecture
Dr. Kingston is a great professor! I had him for world history 1 and I loved the class and got a easy a! Just go to class and take notes and you will do great! Doesn't really test on the textbook! I only wish he taught world history 2!
I'm not sure if I wrote down the right class number--it was Enlightenment History though, and it's really where Kingston excels. Teaches more in the British way (he is, after all, Irish) which means he's more out to help and teach rather than make students jump through hoops. He's on your side...go to class, read enough to get by, good teacher
umm, the posting below is mine; i meant to put a 4 on easyness, but put a 2 instead...so i'm throwing out a 5 rating on this one to somewhat balance that out. He's not hard. Also, if you're taking him for an upper level class he'll help you become a better writer
This class rocks! It's really interesting, and the work load is pretty easy. Although I disagree with some of his opinions, he is very good at listening to the students during discussions. The midterm and the final are prior disclosure essays. The discussions are fun and you don't have any tests! He's great!
It's hard at times to understand what he is saying. covers too much information for one each test. The GTA who knew nothing covered the review before test. ALso He will run around the classroom with his microphone like a game show host and shove it in peoples faces and ask them questions and also creeps up on the people who fall asleep.Kinda scary!
He is a very good professor. He definitely knows what he is talking about, but requires a great amount of class participation. Class discussions are challengig and require deep understanding of the readings. Luckily, grades do not come from discussion input, but from comprehension and summaries. Procrastinates with grading essays.
Great for World History I. Just study the powerpoint slides and you can ace each test.
Seems scary the first day, but it's so easy. He takes attendance and says it matters but it doesn't. He's really hard to follow, so get u-notes for every exam, that's all you need to study. The book is useless. Normally I do poorly on exams but I only studied 1 or 2 nights before and did really well. Easy bonuses on the exams. I made a 103 on final
What a great teacher. GTAs were nice and understanding. They really helped out with the study sessions if you were like me and didn't take notes in class. Kingston himself teaches it crystal clear, you watch a couple of movies for a couple of days. Take him.
Honors History I&II are EASY! Class lecture&then discussions with discussion papers that are easy if you are even in class. Come to class because he add 3 points on you final grade if you do. NO tests-just 2 outside essays&the midterm and final are prior disclosure so you have 2 days to prepare the essays. GREAT teacher. AVOID CROCKER and take him!
*Screams* I HATE THIS CLASS!!!Relatively easy 'A' though...
Dr. Kingston is an awesome professor, and even a more awesome person! Expects alot of depth in your argument, but is very willing to help you through the process in anyway he can. Classes are fun, and often humorous. Great person to just talk to. Oh, and if you miss three or less classes, you get 2% added onto your final grade. :)
Dr. Kingston's class is pretty cool, sometimes. The class is really random and the paper assignments are extremely vague. I would recommend taking him, he is extremely helpful when studying for his test or write for an assignment.
Awesome teacher! Really helpful and nice. Very funny and easy to get along with.
Great teacher. Expects a lot from your papers especially, but at the end of the year I ended up with a better grade than I expected (especially on the final). He's also EXTREMELY helpful outside of class... I emailed him all the time about my papers and he got back to me right away. Take him if you can, but be ready to work!
I wouldn't take him again. There is no textbook and his tests come from his powerpoint and what he says with them, therefore you have to try to write everything that he says and you miss a lot. I also felt that he was rude, when I went to his office hours to go over my test he was rude and pretty much told me how dumb I was for missing ?s.
He changed his class a lot this year and no doesn't us a text book. Tests come from lecture slides and everything he says, so be sure to write everything he says. Go to SI and review all slides, never miss class, do readings for breakout sessions and be able to apply what you learn. Essay isn't too hard, but try hard. Easy B, difficult A.
I LOVED Professor Kingston. He makes corny jokes to make class more enjoyable and he genuinely cares about whether or not you learn the material. He had no textbooks just readings and the lectures came from slide shows. I would take him again!
Pretty awesome teacher; his dumb jokes helped in making class somewhat interesting. Has 2 small papers and 1 large paper at end of semester which helped boost my grade A LOT. I absolutely hate history and ended up with a B even after I failed 1st test and got an 80 and 76 on last 2 tests.
Kingston is a really great teacher! He focuses on specific instances and documents of history rather than the boring typical surface of all history. There were several essays and papers. However, he grades them fairly easy even if you royally screw up. Because of all the EXTRA CREDIT I came out with an A. He's hilarious and enjoyable to be around!
Kingston was hard for me, but I'm not a history guru... lots of memorization and his tests are super specific. He's challenging, but if you're up for the challenge, take him.
I took Kingston for HIST 1010 last fall and HATED his class. He was unorganized with his notes and vague with his explanations, and even jumped around from topic to topic. The worst part was not having a textbook, which I would have trusted ALOT more than his notes. Had to study my hardest to get a B, probably more than I should have. Terrible.
Dr. Kingston was very fair with his papers; I really appreciated that he encouraged students to make their own arguments and graded the papers based on the strength of the argument, not on whether he agreed with it. Be ready to write a lot, including the papers, the tests consist of essays and one page commentaries. Overall a good history teacher.
Dr. Kingston is funny and an interesting character but his class is difficult, for me at least. I am not a history buff so I knew at the start that it would be a tough class for me. Lot of readings, attendance was bonus points only for me but necessary for even a B.
This class is way too difficult for a 1010 class. A ton of pdf readings every week on the most vague topics. 5 question reading quizzes and 3 minutes to take them. Hard tests, very scattered in the way he teaches, and jumps from subject to subject. Way too difficult to even receive a B in the class.
He's a great guy, but a bad teacher. Was never very clear or organized in his lectures. Expected his students to take notes on both the powerpoints and what he was saying. Tons of PDF readings every week, and weekly reading quizzes.
Dr. Kingston is Irish, so he brings a European flair to the class; does not assign a text book because he believes that students shouldn't have to pay more than they already do. If you enjoy history, you will enjoy his class. He's very laid back and funny. His class is a history of ideas - not just events - so you'll have to form your own opinions.
Very harsh grader, especially with reading quizzes, you read 150 pages approx and he asks you five questions online in four minutes. They are very specific, detailed, and even trivial questions.
Professor Kingston is a really nice, but odd guy. Office hours are really helpful! He is tough, but if you take notes and pay attention you will do well.
I would not take Kingston's class. He is Irish, so it is hard to understand, and his lectures are not organized in any kind of way. He doesn't care about what time class ends, and expects you to stay until he's done, no matter how long passed time he takes. Lots of reading, and a hard 5 question quiz weekly. You only get 4 minutes to take it.
His lectures lack a rhythm and he rarely finishes them on time. I should have dropped this class when I had to take a quiz based on his typo-ridden syllabus. If you want to feel dejected at the end of each week (the infamous reading quizzes) then take his class. He's clearly too stubborn to recognize a bloated class.
Dr. Kingston has a very thick Scottish accent, so he isn't the worst professor to understand. He has read around 50 pages each week and asks you four (seemingly impossible) specific, detailed question in four minutes. If possible, I would lean towards taking someone else. His class is doable, however.
DO NOT TAKE KINGSTON. I have never made below an A on anything, took Kingston, he expects way to much out of a HIST 1010 class. Expects you to be experts on everything, asking the most detailed questions on every test and reading quiz. Also very unorganized, never gets done with lectures on time, and his power points go in not particular order.
Dr. Kingston was an interesting guy. He has an Irish accent, but I had no trouble understanding him. He makes some funny jokes in class and seems to be excited about what he teaches. I found the tests to fairly difficult but aced them all. Reading quizzes however are quite difficult. Overall, not a bad guy to take, just lots of memorization.
Lectures are scattered and don't have a lot of structure, but if you take notes and pay attention, it's not too bad. There's "required" reading for discussion classes, but he assigns so much and the reading quizzes are so difficult anyway, I ended up not doing any of the reading. Overall, not too bad but certainly not the best.
Very hard class. Has his own set of "novels" on Canvas that you will be reading every week before the weekly timed test that is extremely stressful. Take another teacher.
Very smart guy who lectures in a way that you'll learn so much just listening to the lectures. Really has a knack for making the material so interesting you won't want to skip. Don't miss the discussion classes and come prepared to discuss the articles. Take him your freshman year to see what it feels like to really "learn" a subject. StudyA
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He is all over the place with his teaching and there is no way to follow what he says. His reading quizzes are impossible and his tests are almost just as hard. I think he is convinced that his students are all World History Majors. DO NOT TAKE IT, FIND ANOTHER IF POSSIBLE.
His quizzes can be tough but there are only three of them, and you have a whole week to read the 20 pages that the quiz covers. All you have to do is read it and understand what happening, and you should get at least a 4/5. His lectures are good, and he likes to make jokes. You get an extra 1% to your final grade if you miss less than 3 classes.
Great professor! He is super funny, a little dorky, but funny. Has an Irish accent but is still easy to understand. His lectures are fun and interesting. His quizes are tough but the tests are easy. I got a 100 on my first test without studying more than 2 hours. Come to class and you will pass. I highly recommend him.
Wonderful teacher!
I hated this class so much. Dr. Kingston has great intentions, but I didn't learn a single thing. He's accent is kind of hard to understand. His test are super hard to me. I would not recommend taking his class.
Kingston is a really nice guy and is very knowledgeable about history.. His lectures can get confusing at times, but if you just pay attention and study a little bit you'll do fine in the class.
Dr. Kingston is a really cool guy, he cracks a lot of jokes during lectures. His class is never boring but his tests are really detailed and are mostly on the lectures. The quizzes are on the readings he assigns, they are really hard but are only worth 3% of your grade. For some reason Auburn is just known for having really tough history classes.
Kingston is awesome, he's Super funny and a really nice guy who's there for you. I enjoyed every lecture and without studying for more than a couple hours I aced all exams but 1 (89), and I thought the reading quizzes were easy. I did all the readings right before the quizzes and literally reviewed (copied down) all the lectures before the exams.
Dr. Kingston is actually a wonderful lecturer. He tells jokes throughout the lecture to keep you engaged and he will truly help if you need it. His tests are hard and there's homework over passages in the book, but if you truly try hard enough you'll get an A. It's not super easy, but it's definitely doable.
His tests are extremely difficult and he is hard to understand sometimes... If you do ALL the discussions and quizzes and do decent on the tests you should be fine.
His lectures were always slightly confusing to me and he went into way more detail than other professors that my friends had. I have always done well in my classes and I struggled to keep up. If you have a passion for history he is great, but if you are just looking to get the class over with definitely find a new professor!
His lectures are super interesting as long as you put forth the effort to stay engaged. He constantly tells corny jokes throughout the lecture and makes the class enjoyable. As long as you take good notes and you review them before the test, , read the textbook and online documents, and go to the SI test review, you'll do great! 10/10 reccomend
Pretty good guy, his accent is hard to follow sometimes. Genially cares about our questions and the class as a whole
Professor Kingston loves history and makes that obvious through his lectures. His Irish accent is pretty thick but you will get used to it. There are 4 tests, with the fourth one being the final exam and weighing the same as the other exams. He assigns several readings from the textbook but the content is on the tests so it is vital anyways.
He honestly was the best professor I have had at Auburn. He truly loves teaching and makes history as enjoyable as possible. His lectures are great and you should defiantly go if you want to make an A, but attendance was 1% of the grade. He puts the all lecture power points online. If you want someone to make a boring subject fun take Kingston.
Professor Kingston is a really good teacher and has a way of making you want to pay attention in class. The tests are pretty difficult, but as long as you put forth effort you should pass. Notes are online and he's a fast grader. There's a discussion worth 400 points so definitely do that. Overall, I enjoyed this class and would take it again
Professor Kingston is an awesome person but his test are difficult. He cracks jokes and is an avid user of sarcasm. He is very passionate abut history but his lectures are hard to understand.
Getting a good grade in this class is straightforward. Pay attention during lectures and read the required readings on canvas and you get an A. Dr. Kingston's accent is fun to listen to and makes it easier to stay focused on the subject.
Absolutely loved this class! Dr. Kingston is a very funny guy & really cares about what he is teaching. His tests can be really hard, but if you study his powerpoints & read the assigned readings from the textbook you should be fine. He gives extra credit for attendance & he gives up to 6 points of extra credit on every test. One of my fav classes!
Attendance is not mandatory, but a lot of test questions come from things he said during lectures that may not be on the powerpoints. He also gives a small extra credit if you miss 3 or fewer lectures. I enjoyed his class, it is interesting to listen to him. he is a pretty chill guy.
Dr. Kingston is hands-down the best professor I had this semester at Auburn. He gives fantastic lectures and is very friendly and approachable. The best advice I can give is to take close notes during his lectures (they're 90% of the material on the tests) and read the online sources. I did very few of the textbook readings and made a 94, though.
He's a really sweet guy. He's really interesting and is really good at responding back to your emails. If you email him your questions or go to office hours, he'll tell you what's important. I loved just talking with him, definitely a teacher you want to take.
Ralph is super chill. Outside of the fact that he speaks insanely quickly and can't quite pronounce the word "three," he gives interesting lectures and easy exams. All you have to do is take good notes in class, skim the supplemental reading, and you'll get an A. Gives decent amount of extra credit on exams and has small discussion assignment.
Wish I could take him again
He made history bearable, probably the best choice for history 1010
Lecture heavy, but if you study the power points and get notes from some one you'll do fine. I've fallen asleep in almost every lecture but I study extremely hard for the test ( 4 in a year) about 4 days in advance and get a B every time.
His Exams are extremely hard.
Dr. Kingston is my favorite professor thus far. He is a really funny dude and his lectures are very interesting. Go to class; you get points for attendance, and his test are mostly lecture materiel. Very intriguing course with lots of chances for an A+.
Professor Kingston is a really cool guy!!!! His tests are mainly lecture based, and can be somewhat hard but the online discussion really helps your grade. He is always available for questions and he makes class not the worst!!! take him if you can
Dr. Kingston is one of my favorite history teachers ever! He is a really great lecturer, he makes the content easy to relate to. His tests are pretty hard but the online discussion helps. He is a very nice guy who is willing to work with you to help you make good grades. He has a decently thick Irish accent but it just makes lectures more fun.
Professor Kingston has well organized lectures and Power Points. Most of the information needed for test can be found in the powerpoint, so if you study from those and take relatively good notes the class is easily passible. Side note, I think his lecture time could be cut in half if he stopped using the word "basically" to start every sentence.
Professor Kingston is very funny and helpful. His class is easy to follow and interesting. There are outside readings which are 'mandatory', but usually only one or two test questions are on them and he goes over most of them in class. There are outside writing assignments but they are very general and he usually gives full credit for an attempt.
Kingston is awesome. He is extremely funny and gives you all the tools you need to do well in this class. He says reading is mandatory but not many test questions are on it at all and if there is one, there is a good chance he will go over it in class. My advice is to sit up front and go to SI Sessions. If you try to do well in his class you will.
People in my class complained that it was really hard, but that is far from true. You're required to read the textbook, but if you go to class and listen to lecture he tells you EVERYTHING you need to know for exams. He has 3 discussion q's throughout the semester (easy grade-booster) and you get extra credit for having less than 3 absences
You don't have to go to class but you probably wont pass if you don't. The tests aren't super easy but if you take relatively good notes & pay attention in class you'll be fine. If you email or go to his office hours, he'll literally tell you everything you need to know. I loved having him and really wish I could take him again. He's also Irish
Dr. Kingston is hilarious and his lectures are very informative. He makes learning enjoyable. Only 4 exams including the final and the discussion assignment buffers your grades so you can afford lower exam scores, however I never got below a B+ on them. As long as you study lecture notes his exams are very manageable. Super nice guy.
HIST1010 was a very positive experience. Professor Kingston is a surprisingly entertaining lecturer with a pretty good sense of humor, and is very easy to follow if you pay a little attention. Tests were content-heavy but weren't exceedingly difficult, and bonus points were consistently offered on each. Take his class if you can.
Dr. Kingston is not the best professor at Auburn, but he is really good, he's a really nice guy, that is always helpful. He grades very fair, and gives a lot of participation points. His lectures are hard to follow, and their were times I didn't know what was going on, but go to class, and participate and you'll be fine.
Kingston is absolutely hilarious and I wish he was teaching 1020 next semester. DO NOT buy the textbooks, just buy the Silk Roads book. His tests are STRAIGHT from the lectures, so if you go to class and at least halfway pay attention and then study the powerpoints (he posts them all) and read over your notes, you'll do fine in this class.
Boring, but possible to still make an A by just studying the powerpoint he posts online. I stopped taking notes and didn't read the book and was still fine. There are short answer questions on every test so be prepared to talk about anything that was covered. If you miss less than 3 classes you get a point added to your final grade.
Great professor, but if the class time is only 50 minutes long it may be more challenging. He tends to get distracted in lectures
Dr. Kingston has an interesting sense of humor and he's pretty goofy. His lectures are straight-forward, tests aren't difficult if you know what you're talking about and there's only one other assignment which is basically a discussion and not hard. I ended up with an 89 and barely missed an A, but I maintained a high A most of the semester easily.
Came into the class thinking it was going to be about Europe during WWI, but turns out the class was covering Europe in the 1800s. His Irish accent is a little difficult to understand at times. Be prepared to read long sections of extremely boring material.
Is genuinely interested in what he's teaching. His tests aren't difficult, as he is more interested in making sure students grasp the why and how instead of specifics. The readings are helpful but not necessary to succeed. What he emphasizes in the lecture is 95% of the exams, so don't skip class. Going to office hours is definitely worth it.
He has an accent but you can still understand him. His class isnt interesting unless youre super into history, so his lectures get boring. His class is super average
Great professor! I wish he taught HIST1020. His lectures are easy to follow and all of his notes are online. His class is not mandatory, but he gives your overall grade one bonus point if you miss less than 4 lectures. May not sound like much, but it boosted me from a B to an A. He assigns a lot of reading, but he tells you what will be on the test
Hes alright. He is a pretty tough grader. He gives you comments when he wants something fixed on a paper and if you dont follow it tooth and nail like he says, he will give you a poor grade.
Interesting lectures. Accent is present but not at all difficult to understand. Tests are straightforward, reflective of the lectures. Readings comprise a small portion of tests, so if you're willing to make B's on every test you can choose to not do the readings. That said, his selection of textbooks is pretty good.
I have gotten an A in every college class I've taken in my 2 years at Auburn except for a D in Ralph Kingston's class. I can't put into words how terrible my experience was in this class. Do not take him if you value your sanity or your GPA.
If you ever get stuck with Dr. Kingston, here's a weird but effective study tip. If you count and keep track of the number of times he says the word "basically" during a lecture it makes you have to pay attention even in the most boring lectures. So far, his record in 144 times in a 50 minute lecture.
This is the hardest history class you'll ever take. So boring. He lectures every class for exactly 50 minutes and every single piece of information he uses on the test somehow. Unless you can memorize every word he says there's no use taking this class.
Get ready for extremely long lectures that often ran over the 50 min time period. There are 4 exams, each worth about 20% of your grade and they are HARD. Be prepared for hours of studying and cramming just to get a decent grade on them. Kingston however is a very nice man who is willing to talk to you one on one and even crack a few dad jokes.
He isnt bad, you just have to really study whats on the powerpoints and try to pay attention in class. He goes like 3 minutes over the class schedule and will get mad if everyone packs up. But overall he likes to say "basically" and he tries to lighten the mood more. Maybe one of the best teachers/professors ive had.
He is a great professor but the class is set up where you have to pay attention and be active and aware of the material that is being taught. If I wasn't so terrible at history I may have had a better grade. He brings humor into his lecture at least once everyday. Lectures are important and being aware is also very important.
The worst professor I've ever had. He goes over the 50 minute period every day. I have gone to every class and his tests are still impossible. He gives lots of reading and expects you to memorize everything and his lectures too.
Absolutely the hardest class I have ever taken. I studied like crazy and never missed a class once, but still failed every exam. Anyone I talked to said the same. Avoid him at all costs, I had to drop out to save my gpa. He talks at lightning speed and the tests are crazy specific you have to basically have photographic memory to pass. do not take!
I did not like his class at all. I went to each lecture and took notes, but when the test came around found myself seriously struggling. He puts EVERY little thing on the exam and expects you to remember tiny details. So much material to study for one exam. History is not my strong subject, but he did not help the problem.
Kingston's tests count as 86% of your grade, but his tests are really easy if you pay attention in class and at least skim over his reading assignments. Most test questions come from his lectures, and he usually gives 4 test questions before the test and one short answer. Attendance is mandatory but you get bonus points for only missing 2 classes.
If you are good at history he is a solid choice, but if history is hard for you than this class will be hard. The tests come fast and there is a lot of material to cover on each one. He also will hold you over the class time for 2-3 minutes almost every class and get mad if you start to pack up. Be ready to work hard if you have him.
Gives you the powerpoints that he reads in class. Lectures are based on powerpoints and additional notes he has, so you have to attend. Just have to memorize the powerpoints to get an A on test. Lots of readings that are long but he does not check to see if you did them. Very straight forward and funny teacher.
If you're good at history then take him, but if not then I would not recommend. I've always been decent at history and this is the first time I've come out of a class with anything lower than an A. Test are difficult and he expects you to remember every little bit of information. Memorize all the lecture slides and maybe you'll get an A or B.
If you miss more than many lectures, you wont pass the tests, but the lectures are interesting and good enought that you will be ok with going to class. Grading is very fair, did an easy online discussion over the course of a couple months that counted for 12%, and gives an attendence bonus.
Interesting lectures, tests are decently straightforward and he gives you a decent amount of insight on what exactly the written portions may be about.
A great class! It is hard but if you do the work, take good notes and attend all lectures you will do fine! There are other easy assignments besides tests to boost your grade. He is super kind and truly wants all students to succeed. He is very helpful if you go to his office hours! Interesting class!
Dr. Kingston is very passionate about what he teaches. However, he typically rushes through lectures which makes things extremely difficult. He's helpful out of the classroom. He assigns a lot of outside reading which is required for the tests. Overall, it wasn't the worst class, but Dr. Kingston was just a pretty bland professor.
He was terrible at communicating. I tried so many times to get in touch with him about some misgraded things but he sent me to a TA, which sent me to about 4 other TAs. His tests are awful too. His tests are on EVERY LITTLE THING. I HIGHLY recommend finding someone else
I really enjoyed him and thought he was rather funny. Expect class to last the whole time. There are 4 tests, the final is not cumulative. He puts all his lecture powerpoints online and if you study these for the test, you will be good. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss 3 or less classes you will get an attendance bonus added to grade.
His lectures are very boring and make you want to fall asleep. You will have no idea what 5 map places you will have to map on his tests. Also his tests include 3 essays worth 20 percent (No idea what your essay will be) screws your grade. Silk roads project will boost your grade and very easy to get 100s on papers plus he gives attendance bonus.
He's a great teacher and a great guy. Pay attention and participate in class and you'll do just fine.
Go to his office hours! His lectures are long and full of information, but he tries to make it fun. Tests are little difficult. You really have to study every detail.
Best history professor at Auburn. As long as you take notes on what he says and actually work to understand the material, you'll pass easily. He clearly wants you to do well and is a very reasonable grader. Tests are straight from the lectures, so you definitely need to go. Also gives you a bonus for attendance at the end of the semester.
Dr. Kingston is a nice guy, but I did not enjoy his class. His lectures are super boring, and he moves through them at lightning speed. His tests are incredibly detailed, and he expects you to remember a ton of names. If you don't do the assigned readings (which are also incredibly detailed and hard to understand), you will not do well on the tests
Very good professor. If you show that you care about your grades he's very helpful. Lots of lectures but test are exactly whats in the lectures.
lectures can be long and fast, but write down what he actually says. sometimes hard to understand because of his accent. tests are specific to his lectures. take good notes, do the required readings, and pay attention and youll come out with a good grade. also, interesting person but in a good way. long grey hair, not what i was expecting.
He wasn't bad. I would have done slightly better in the course if I studied for the last exam, but I am also not a history person so I consider it a win. Pay attention to what he says and shows in his lectures because that is the scope of the exam. Lectures were long, so you gotta fight to pay attention He gives an attendance bonus, so go to class!
Not too many assignments. 3 tests and 3 lecture responses. State dance is not required, but you get extra points added to your grade if you miss few classes.
Kingston himself is a very interesting character, certainly not who I expected. Readings are "mandatory" but not really. Maybe 1-4 questions on the exam from the readings out of 50 + short response. Lectures can get boring but that is kinda to be expected. Study the lectures pdfs and you will do well. No dates on tests.
WARNING: he's Irish so he might be hard to understand. He posts all the slides on canvas and you have to do the readings. you need to go to class cause some of the things he talks about will be on the exams. he tries to make class fun but it really isn't. he's a good teacher you just need to go to class.
His lectures are so so so boring. You have to listen to everything that he says because that is what is going to be on the test. He is a nice guy, but he makes it hard for no reason. Tests are very very detailed. I withdrew from the class because I figured out I didn't have to take it. If you have another option, don't take this class.
Professor Kingston is a pretty nice guy. The class isnt necessarily hard, you just dont totally know what the tests will be on, and they make up the majority of your grade. He is strict about attendance. He does not record lectures or post material until after class.
He knows his stuff. He will respond to you quicky with answers to your questions. He is pretty funny in class. Huge stickler on the mask mandate. Good guy all around.
Nice guy but I really hated this class. Mandatory attendance, very very long lectures that jumped between different random time periods. You are really only graded on your exams because there are like no other assignments to boost your grade. You will have to study a ton a do the assigned readings to even do decent on the tests.
This was the hardest class I've taken. The test were literally impossible, I studied for 10 days on one and still did terrible. He is very strict about mask and he wears one while having an accent. I literally couldn't understand what he was saying. Avoid this class at all cost if you aren't good at taking notes from a 75 min lecture.
The grade you get is mostly from tests and those are based on his lectures which can be rather extensive but If you study for the test you should be fine. He does have an accent and can be hard to understand sometimes, so I would sit in the front if I took him again. Good guy and tries to give extra points when he can on tests. Take him!
Really good and funny guy. His accent can be a little hard to understand at times, but hes a great professor in the history department. Lectures can be a little boring but simply paying attention will get you an A. Tests are not hard and the final isnt cumulative. He makes it out like readings and the textbook are required but theyre not.
I absolutely hated this class. Could not understand him speaking at all, sounded like a different language. Makes lectures boring and long. Tests are extremely hard. Do not recommend if you are not good at history
I really liked Dr. Kingston. He has a bit of an Irish accent, but I personally didn't find him hard to understand, and I liked how the class would focus on different parts of time periods every lecture. I also liked how he covered the material while incorporating humor here and there. All in all, not a bad choice for a professor.
If you show up and take any notes at all you should do just fine. I did the bare minimum and got high A's on every exam. The lectures are definitely long and a little tedious but nothing terrible.
History with Dr. Kingston is very enjoyable although the lecture are very long and sometimes get boring. Just show up for them and then go memorize all the slides and its a easy A. He even bolds all the potential topics that will show up on the test. Dr. K also gives students some simple questions in class. Don't expect to pass with zero effort.
Dr. Kingston was a good teacher but I semi-struggled in his class. He has an Irish accent which takes a little while to get used to and he talks nonstop for the entire class period. There are only 2 homework assignments that are super easy. He does do in-class questions that makeup 10% of your grade. Put in the effort and you will pass with an A.
terrible just terrible
Very hard test and long lectures. Test is composed of many things you never learn about and are very in depth hard questions. Do not take him if you want an easy A.
Just go to class and take notes and youll be just fine. Lectures arent boring and hes got a good sense of humor. His accent is not very hard to understand like some have said, and if you make an average effort its an easy A.
fairly easy class, 3 tests including final, around 10 online open-note assignments that are easy, must go to class and participate in tophat questions, take good notes and study for the tests a decent amount and to get an A, assigned seats unfortunately
Dr. Kingston is an amazing professor. His lectures cover a lot, and he goes through it fast, but he really cares about his students and will review commonly missed questions on tests in class. He grades on only a few tests, but he does not have a final, and he is very easy to reach out to for questions. Very good teacher who cares for his students.
He wants his students to pass, he gives opportunities to do better with bonuses, he engages during the lecture, he also actually cares about history and is very passionate about it. The tests are not too bad and will review some questions with you and the whole class. His grading is not harsh, if you're somewhat right then you're right.
Attendance is mandatory and if you have less than 3 unexcused absences he will give you +2% to your grade. He has an Irish accent that was harder for me to understand during lecturers. His main point for tests are bolded in the slides. 3 exams total and all exams have 40 multiple choice questions, 4 map questions, and a short response.
Easy class but a lot of the time his lectures will go over the 1h15m allotted for class. But he gives bonus on tests and for attendance. And he is very generous when grading short answers.
Tough to understand, rambles on about irrelevant things. You need to do the assigned reading outside of class or your test grade will suffer. Powerpoints are posted and there are quizzes directly from them, but they don't help your grade, just hurt it. 3 tests, not cumulative, STUDY hard and do not miss a single class or you won't pass.
Dr. Kingston is nice and does his best to help people do well.
I am not going to recommend this professor. First day of class, we get hit with a 27-page syllabus. He makes this class harder than necessary. So much information crammed into each lecture, and he's a little hard to understand. He also gave us assigned seats like we are in elementary school or something, and attendance is mandatory.
There are so many negative comments about Mr. Kingston.I agree that history as a pre-req should be an easy A, but this class was really not bad. He offers office hours if you are ever lost.I studied the day before for each exam and made an A in this class. There is also a 2%grade bonus bump if you missed less than 5 lectures. I loved him!
Lectures are interesting and he tries to make them as fun as possible, but the entire class is based on 3 tests and a tiny percentage of attendance and "quizzes". Tests are on paper, assigned seats (that are also terribly uncomfortable because parker hall sucks) and our SI quit halfway through the semester claiming personal reasons.
Kingston is a great professor. In my experience the only people who didn't like his class were the ones who didn't try or put any effort into the class. Show up to class and take notes. The more you go over the material outside of class the better. I focused on studying at least a little every day and I ended up with an A.
Dr. Kingston was one of my favorite professors. The lectures are really interesting. Meet with him in office hours! He is super sweet and it really helps. His accent is NOT strong. My only complaint is that there is so much info on the slides and no study guide. Exams are 40 questions + 3 short answer questions, curved and graded generously but hard
SUCH A HARD CLASS DO NOT TAKE IF U DONT HAVE TO
he takes attendance randomly. you get prompts before the exams to prepare essay answers for, and i've never heard of him giving a grade below an 87 or above a 92. he's very specific with what he wants for grading. didn't take too much effort but i didnt love the class.
Grades based on test essays that are all prior disclosure, a group project, and 2 short discussion summarys. Weekly discussions can be a bit painful but he walks you through them, and lectures. Slightly boring but he's nice, not harsh on grades, and he loves history. Def a true honors version of a class, get ready to read a lot.
Very funny. Lecture and discussion heavy. Get ready to write.
Dr. Kingston was one of the funniest professors I have ever had. His class is graded from discussion summaries, a group project, a paper, and two tests. The tests are prior disclosure essay questions. He grades very fairly and is very willing to help out students.
This is an intro level class that was made substantially harder than it should have been. Test are extremely hard and based on interpretation not memory. There are 3-4 weekly documents posted that are upwards of 24 pages and have to be read to be able to answer all test questions.
Does a good job explaining things, gives good advice on essays. Tests aren't too difficult. Honors requires a group project, but it was fun.
Dr. Kingston is such a good professor. I took him with a small class and he made a point to include everyone in class discussions. He was a very easy grader and the lectures were interesting, especially if you like early history. My only critique is that he could jump around a little bit during the lecture, but it was not a big problem.
The tests were extremely difficult, and the lectures were probably the worst lectures I have ever had to sit through. The only grades, were the tests, and the occasional top hat questions. He has an accent which can be difficult to understand at times. I studied for about a week and a half for the final and still failed.
The lectures can be dry, but Professor Kingston makes an effort to keep things interesting. Tests are challenging, so stay on top of the readings and use unstuck ai for extra practice. Attend office hours - it really helps! Overall, the class is manageable with consistent work.
He is nice and funny but not great at teacher. He jumps around a lot and many of his slides go over useless info as he rants. The class is harder than it should be as an intro level class. He also gives assigned seats even though we are in COLLEGE. He goes over the lecture time cramming in extra stuff all the time. If you get him good luck.
He is a nice guy and is very passionate about history but if you sit in the back of his class it is hard to understand his accent. He doesn't give many assignments but his tests are very hard. they are on the longer side and what is said on lectures is not always what is on the test. Its kind of hard to find what he is looking for on the tests
I do not like history, but i do know how to work hard. The lectures are nearly pointless because i'd study my notes for the tests and almost nothing that he talked about in class was on the test. Attendance is mandatory and will hurt your grade if you dont go. Lectures are boring. Though he is a nice person, he is too unorganized.
Although he was super nice and funny, I did have a hard time understanding his accent. The class was in Langdon hall, and his mic needed to be much louder. Few exams, so they really count towards your grade. Really take good notes and attend class for a good grade.
Honestly, if you go to class and pay attention you will do great. Use the TA's and take a ton of notes on what he said and not what is on the board. Only downside is his lecture goes late quite a bit.
Pretty great guy. You gotta take lots of notes on lectures and reading, but there is ZERO date memorization and a non-cumulative final. Put in the expected amount of work for a college class and you'll be fine. He has a slight accent but I could understand it from the back of the room.
He flies through his slides... Most of the stuff on the slides really is not on the exams and he does not give you a clear outline as to what the exam will look like. He has weekly quizzes and practice questions which are not on the exams. He once called half of the class dumb bc half of the class had gotten C's or below on his exam.
Lectures are boring and barely cover half of what's on the exam. Accent is not hard to understand. This class was made to be way harder than it should have been for an intro level
Flies through his slides extremely fast. Takes only a handful of grades all semester so tests count for a majority of your grade. Zero study guides. Class was made way to difficult for an entry level history class. Majority of us are just trying to get through history and he makes it impossible to do so.
I really enjoyed this class! Very nice and funny professor. No homework other than weekly lecture quiz and optional reading. Tests were difficult, but as long as you study and attend class you will be fine.
Honestly, Dr. Kingston is a very nice guy. Yes the class is difficult because 75% of your grade are tests that are pretty difficult if you don't study. I normally had around 35 pages of notes for each exam which is not something you can do the night before. Take your time to study for the exams and you'll be fine.
For this to be a basic history class, it is HARD. My notes are never below 10 pages. Lectures are filled with minor details that may or may not be on the exam. Uses a lot of EXCEPT or NOT TRUE questions. His accent is not bad. Nice guy, just not worth taking.
Did well in the class, but would not recommend. 3 exams worth 75% of your grade, and he does not give clear directions on what is on the exam. Be prepared to work extremely hard for a class that you shouldn't have to.
He was super friendly and easy to access if you ever needed help with anything related to the class. Attendance was mandatory, but you were provided extra points in the class for attending the lectures. There was assigned seating. The exams were very difficult as they covered at least 6 weeks of content.
